March doodles are the fastest way to get spring onto paper before the weather even decides to cooperate. A black fineliner, a couple of markers and a few spare minutes are all you need, and every page below fits in a notebook corner or a full sheet if you want to stretch.
Below you will find 31 small scenes, from a single tulip bud to a girl jumping in a puddle, ordered so the easiest ones come first. Pick whichever one makes you smile and work through it today, no planning required.
Using these images: free for personal projects such as printing, coloring, cards, journals and gifts. Handmade items that include them may be sold up to 30 pieces per design. More than that is commercial use and is not permitted, and neither is selling or sharing the images themselves or passing them off as your own. Please ask before any other use.
Start with the simplest shape in the whole set: a trumpet-shaped daffodil just beginning to unfurl from a small terracotta pot. Draw the pot first as a simple trapezoid with a rim line, then add a thin stem rising from the soil before the flower head.
Build the daffodil from the center out: a small ring for the trumpet, then six petal shapes fanning behind it like a star. Ink the pot and stem last so the flower stays the hero of the page.
Where this goes wrong is petal spacing, they bunch up on one side if you do not mark six rough points first with tiny dots. If you do not have yellow on hand, leave the trumpet white and outline it bolder instead.
Color the trumpet daffodil yellow and leave the petals mostly white with just a yellow edge, then add leaf green to the stem and a few pot highlights.
Palette: Daffodil Yellow,Leaf Green,Terracotta
Move from flowers to luck with a four leaf clover, drawn as four overlapping heart shapes meeting at a center point. Sketch the four hearts lightly first so they sit evenly around a shared middle, then ink over the strongest lines.
Add a short curved stem beneath the clover and a tiny ladybird resting on one leaf: a half circle body, a thin line down the middle, and a few small dots for spots. Ink the clover before the ladybird so the bug sits clearly on top.
The easiest mistake here is uneven leaves, so keep all four hearts roughly the same size by eyeing them against each other before you commit to ink. No red marker on hand means a plain black and white ladybird works just as well against the green.
Fill the clover with leaf green and leave the ladybird red if you have it, or simply outlined if you do not, finishing with one tiny white gel pen dot for shine.

After two small round subjects, try a rain boot, a shape built from one tall curved rectangle for the leg and a rounded sole beneath it. Draw the boot outline first, keep the top edge slightly uneven so it reads as rubber rather than stiff plastic.
Once the boot stands on the page, add a single tulip or daffodil growing out of the top opening as though it planted itself there. Ink the flower stem overlapping the boot rim so it looks tucked inside, not floating above it.
Measure the boot against the flower before inking: keep the boot roughly twice the height of the flower head so neither element overwhelms the other. If your boot looks lopsided, a quick symmetry check works best by folding the page in half against a window to compare both sides.
Color the boot yellow with a green flower on top, or swap the colors so the boot is green and the bloom is yellow for contrast. One tip that saves most boots: draw the sole last, it anchors the whole shape once it is there.
Palette: Daffodil Yellow,Leaf Green,Soft Grey
Look at a real rain boot or a photo of one before drawing, the slight lean and the rounded toe are what make it read as a boot and not a sock.
Keep building on small still objects with a seed packet, drawn as a simple rectangle with a torn top edge and a tiny printed flower on the front. Draw the packet outline first, then add a thin line near the top to suggest the fold where it has been opened.
From the open top, let one curved green sprout rise with two small leaves unfurling, as if the packet planted itself the moment it opened. Ink the packet details, the little flower drawing and any lettering lines, after the sprout so the sprout stays crisp on top.
Packets often end up too narrow for anything to look like it is growing from them, so widen the top opening more than feels natural before you ink it. If fineliner only feels flat, a few short hatch lines along one side of the packet suggest a fold and add depth fast.
Use daffodil yellow for the printed flower on the packet and leaf green for the sprout, leaving the packet itself white or very lightly shaded.
For a quick spring project that pairs well with this one, browse the pencil colour drawing flower ideas for more bloom shapes to borrow.
Palette: Leaf Green,Daffodil Yellow,Kraft Brown
Carry the gardening thread forward with a watering can, built from one rounded body, a curved handle arching over the top, and a long spout angled downward. Draw the body first as a simple oval, then add the spout and handle as two separate curved lines meeting the body at clear points.
Once the can shape sits right, add a few small water drops falling from the spout tip, drawn as simple teardrop shapes getting smaller as they fall. Ink the can solidly before adding the drops so they read as separate and airborne.
The spout is where most cans go wrong, too short and it looks stubby, too long and it looks broken off. Hold your pen above the page and compare the spout length to the can body before committing, it should run about half the body’s height.
Paint the can body in soft grey or leave it white with black outlines only, then color the drops and a thin stream in a pale leaf green or daffodil yellow wash if you have light markers.
Palette: Soft Grey,Leaf Green,Daffodil Yellow
Stay in the shed a moment longer with a garden glove and trowel laid side by side, a simple still life of two tools resting after use. Draw the glove first as a mitten shape with one separated thumb, keeping the fingers slightly curled rather than stiff and straight.
Lay the trowel beside or partly beneath the glove, its blade a long rounded triangle and its handle a short cylinder. Ink the glove’s seam lines and a few wrinkle marks after the outline, these small details sell the fabric far more than a clean outline alone.
Overlapping the trowel handle slightly under the glove’s cuff is the easiest way to show one tool resting on the other, so decide that overlap before you ink either shape fully. No trowel at home to look at, any small garden tool shape with a handle and a flat or pointed end works just as well.
Color the glove leaf green with a daffodil yellow cuff band, and leave the trowel blade silver grey with a brown wooden handle.
Palette: Leaf Green,Daffodil Yellow,Kraft Brown
Isolate just one tulip bud, tightly closed and leaning slightly to one side, a calm little subject that takes only a few lines. Draw the bud as a simple elongated oval, pointed at the top, with one curved line down the middle suggesting the seam between petals.
Add a single straight stem and two long tapering leaves, one on either side, curving gently away from the stem rather than standing stiff and parallel. Ink the bud before the leaves so the leaves can tuck behind it naturally where they overlap.
Eye level matters more than people expect even on something this small: draw the bud as if you are looking at it slightly from below, which means the base of the oval curves more than the top. That small shift is what makes a tulip look like it is standing in a garden bed rather than floating flat on the page.
Color the bud a soft yellow or leave it in outline with just a yellow blush near the top, and fill both leaves leaf green.
Palette: Daffodil Yellow,Leaf Green
Bring a little height to the page with a cherry blossom branch standing in a simple glass jar. Draw the jar first as a short cylinder with a slightly narrower neck, then let one zigzagging branch rise up and out of the opening at an angle.
Add small blossom clusters along the branch, each flower just five tiny petal dots around a center point, varying their size so some look closer and some further along the branch. Ink the jar last and keep its outline very light so the branch stays the main event.
Branches often end up too straight and stiff, so add two or three small direction changes as it climbs, like a lightning bolt rather than a ruler line. If you do not have pink on hand, daffodil yellow blossoms against the green jar reflection still read as a cheerful spring branch.
Leave the jar mostly white with a thin grey outline, color the branch brown, and dot the blossoms in soft yellow or pale pink if available.
Palette: Kraft Brown,Daffodil Yellow,Soft Grey
Switch to something wearable with a small pointed hat decorated with a single shamrock on the front brim. Draw the hat as a tall triangle with a curved brim at the base, keeping the proportions slightly squat and friendly rather than sharp and tall.
Place one small three leaf shamrock on the front of the hat, built from three overlapping heart shapes like a smaller cousin of the four leaf clover drawn earlier. Ink the hat shape fully before adding the shamrock so it sits clearly as a decoration rather than part of the hat’s outline.
A hat drawn too thin looks more like a dunce cap than a festive one, so widen the base brim generously before you ink the final lines. Swap the shamrock for a simple buckle shape if clover leaves feel fiddly, both read as a nod to March.
Color the hat body leaf green with a daffodil yellow band around the brim, and fill the shamrock a slightly darker green for contrast.
Palette: Leaf Green,Daffodil Yellow,Ink Black
Follow the shamrock hat with something alive: a small bee resting on a crocus, as if it just landed for the season’s first taste of pollen. Draw the crocus first, a simple cup shape on a short stem with two thin grass-like leaves either side.
Add the bee on or just above the petals, built from two overlapping ovals for the body and two small curved wing shapes behind them. Ink the stripes across the bee’s body last, three or four short curved lines rather than straight bands, which makes the body look rounded instead of flat.
Wings drawn too large make the bee look like it is about to tip over, so keep them roughly half the length of the body and angled slightly up and back. If yellow stripes feel tricky to place evenly, draw the body outline first and mark stripe positions with faint dots before inking.
Color the crocus petals a soft purple or lilac if you have it, otherwise yellow works fine, and keep the bee’s stripes daffodil yellow against a black body.
Palette: Daffodil Yellow,Ink Black,Soft Lilac
Look at a real bee photo for wing shape and placement, bees rest wings flat and slightly overlapped rather than spread wide like a butterfly.
Give the bee some company with a robin perched on a short fence post, chest puffed out against the early spring chill. Draw the fence post first as a simple rectangle with a slightly rounded or angled top, then build the robin’s body as one rounded oval sitting just above it.
Add the head as a smaller circle overlapping the body, a short triangular beak, and two thin stick legs disappearing behind the post top. Ink the wing line and tail feathers last, a few short curved strokes rather than one solid shape, which keeps the bird looking soft rather than stiff.
The orange-red chest patch is what makes a robin a robin, so leave that shape clearly defined and rounded before you color it, never let it bleed into the grey-brown back. No orange marker on hand, a warm yellow patch still reads as a robin if the rest of the shape is right.
Color the chest a warm rust or orange, the back and wings soft grey-brown, and the fence post a simple kraft brown.
If garden birds are becoming a favorite subject, the dog doodles for beginners guide has more tips on drawing small creatures with personality.
Palette: Rust Orange,Soft Grey,Kraft Brown
Move from a perched bird to one caught mid-task: a small bird arriving at a half-built nest with a twig in its beak. Draw the nest first as a loose circle of overlapping curved lines, like a messy wreath rather than a neat ring, sitting on a thin tree branch.
Add the bird just beside or above the nest, body and head drawn the same way as before, but angle the beak downward holding a single thin twig line. Ink the nest’s woven texture last, short overlapping strokes going in different directions, which reads as twigs far better than one smooth outline.
Where this scene sits in space matters: draw the branch and nest slightly below the bird’s eye level, as if you are looking up into a tree, and the whole thing instantly feels like a real perch rather than a flat diagram. If twig texture feels tedious, a looser scribble of short lines inside the nest outline gets the same effect faster.
Color the nest in warm brown tones, the bird in any soft color you like, and add a touch of leaf green to a few small leaf buds on the branch.
Palette: Kraft Brown,Leaf Green,Soft Grey
Settle the nest scene further with a close-up of the finished nest, now holding three small speckled blue eggs. Draw the nest the same way as before, a loose woven circle, but this time keep the view straight on so the inside bowl of the nest is visible.
Add three simple oval eggs nestled inside, overlapping slightly so they look tucked together rather than lined up in a row. Ink a few tiny dot speckles on each egg last, scattered unevenly rather than in a neat pattern, which makes them look far more convincing.
An egg that looks too perfectly round reads as a ball rather than an egg, so keep one end slightly narrower than the other on each shape before you ink it. Swap blue for pale cream or speckled brown if you prefer a different bird’s nest altogether.
Color the eggs a soft pale blue with grey-brown speckles, and keep the nest itself in warm browns with a little leaf green tucked at the base for fresh spring grass.
Palette: Soft Blue,Kraft Brown,Leaf Green
Bring in a small farm animal with a lamb wearing a simple bow around its neck, standing in a patch of grass. Draw the lamb’s body first as one large rounded cloud shape, bumpy edges all around to suggest wool, then add a smaller smooth oval for the face peeking out.
Add four short thin legs beneath the body and two small ears on the head, then draw a simple bow shape at the neck last, two triangles meeting at a small center knot. Ink the wool texture around the body edge with small curved bumps rather than straight lines, which is what makes it read as fleece.
Legs drawn too thin snap visually under the heavy wool body, so keep them a little thicker than feels natural and ground them with a short line for grass at each foot. If a bow feels fussy, a simple ribbon line tied in a loop works just as well.
Color the lamb’s face and legs a soft cream, leave the woolly body white with grey shadow lines, and color the bow daffodil yellow.
Palette: Cream,Soft Grey,Daffodil Yellow
After the lamb, slow right down with a small snail resting on a large wet leaf, left over from a recent shower. Draw the leaf first as a wide curved teardrop shape with a central vein line and a few branching side veins.
Add the snail near one edge, its shell a simple spiral drawn from the center outward in one continuous curving line, then a short curved body trailing beneath it with two small antennae. Ink a few small raindrop shapes scattered across the leaf last, varying their size so the leaf looks freshly rained on rather than sprinkled evenly.
A spiral shell that starts too tight in the center is hard to finish cleanly, so begin with a small dot and let the line loosen as it spirals outward, giving yourself more room with each turn. If the spiral feels tricky at first try, practice it a few times in the margin before committing to the final page.
Color the leaf leaf green with slightly darker green veins, and leave the snail’s shell a warm tan or soft yellow brown.
Palette: Leaf Green,Kraft Brown,Soft Blue
Stay low to the ground with a small rounded mushroom popping up after a spring shower, a tiny subject that still carries a whole scene. Draw the cap first as a simple dome shape, flattened slightly at the bottom where it meets the stem, then add a short straight stem beneath it.
Add a few small white or light dot shapes scattered across the cap, left as uncolored circles surrounded by darker marker, and a scattering of tiny raindrops around the base in the grass. Ink a few short grass blades around the stem last, which grounds the mushroom and gives it a sense of just having pushed through the soil.
Where this scene lives on the page depends on light direction, so decide early whether sun comes from the left or right and shade one side of the cap slightly darker with closer hatching to match. That single choice is what gives a flat dome shape a sense of roundness.
Color the cap a warm rust red or soft brown, leave the dot spots white, and fill the surrounding grass leaf green.
Palette: Rust Orange,Leaf Green,Soft Grey
Add a little shyness to the page with a small bunny peeking out from behind a clump of tall grass, only its head and two ears visible above the blades. Draw the grass first as a loose cluster of tall curving lines of varying height, leaving a gap in the middle for the bunny’s face.
Fill that gap with a simple rounded head shape, two long upright ears, and two small dot eyes looking straight out at the viewer. Ink the grass blades over the bunny’s lower body last, letting a few blades overlap in front of the chin and ears so it genuinely looks tucked behind them.
A common slip here is making the ears too short, which reads as a mouse rather than a rabbit, so draw them at least as long as the head itself before inking. If grass clusters feel repetitive to draw, vary the curve direction of each blade so no two lean exactly the same way.
Color the bunny a soft grey or cream, leave the inner ears a pale pink if you have it, and fill the grass leaf green.
Palette: Soft Grey,Leaf Green,Blush Pink
Keep the rain theme going with a small frog sheltering under an oversized leaf held up like an umbrella. Draw the leaf first as a wide rounded shape with a central vein, then add a short stem running down to where a tiny hand or paw might hold it.
Build the frog beneath it as two stacked ovals for the body and head, with two large round eyes on top and two short bent legs. Ink the raindrops falling around the leaf’s edge last, small teardrop shapes bouncing off the leaf’s curved border to show it is doing its job.
Eye placement is everything on a frog: set both eyes high on the head and close together near the top so the frog reads as looking upward and outward, which is exactly where real frog eyes sit. If a held leaf feels tricky to connect to the frog’s limb, simply balance the leaf stem against the frog’s back instead, as if it is resting there.
Color the frog a bright leaf green, leave the sheltering leaf a slightly different shade of green, and keep the raindrops a pale blue-grey.
Palette: Leaf Green,Soft Blue,Deep Green
Bring in some fresh symmetry with a butterfly resting with wings spread wide, drying them in early spring sun. Draw a short vertical line down the center of the page first as a guide, then build one wing shape on each side, matching them as closely as possible across that centerline.
Add a simple oval body and two thin antennae at the top, then fill each wing with a matching pattern of dots, stripes or small circles, repeated on both sides for symmetry. Ink the body last so it sits cleanly between the two finished wings without smudging either one.
The fastest way to check if both wings match is to glance at the page upside down for a moment, any big difference in size or pattern jumps out immediately that way. If patterning both wings identically feels slow, keep the design simple, a single row of dots near the wing edge reads just as well as something elaborate.
Color one wing section leaf green and the other daffodil yellow for a two-tone look, or mix both colors across each wing evenly.
For more ideas on working with pattern and symmetry in a small drawing, the ocean doodles beginner ideas cover similar tricks with fish and shell shapes.
Palette: Leaf Green,Daffodil Yellow,Ink Black
Add some motion to the page with a small scene of a hat caught mid-air, leaves swirling around it in a sudden gust. Draw the hat first as a simple rounded shape with a brim, tilted at an angle as though it has just lifted off someone’s head.
Palette: Leaf Green,Daffodil Yellow,Soft Grey
Settle into something more structural with a small calendar page, a simple grid of squares with one date circled to mark the first day of spring. Draw the outer rectangle first, then divide it into a light grid of small squares using a ruler or just a steady hand for a looser look.
Number a few of the squares loosely, you do not need every date, just enough to suggest a real calendar page, then circle one square with a thicker, more confident ink line. Ink a tiny flower or sun doodle beside the circled date last, a small reward mark that draws the eye straight to it.
Grids drawn freehand tend to drift crooked by the final row, so work from the top down and periodically check that your horizontal lines still run parallel to the one above. If straight lines feel stressful without a ruler, lean into a slightly wobbly, hand-drawn grid instead, it reads as a cheerful sketchbook calendar rather than a sloppy one.
Color just the circled date and its small flower doodle in daffodil yellow and leaf green, keeping the rest of the grid in plain black ink for contrast.
Palette: Daffodil Yellow,Leaf Green,Ink Black
Take a breather with a cozy still life: a cup of tea resting on a stone step, steam curling up into the first warm sun of the season. Draw the cup first as a simple rounded shape with a handle, then add the step beneath it as two or three stacked horizontal blocks.
Add a few soft curling lines rising from the cup for steam, looped loosely rather than straight, and a small sun shape peeking in from one corner of the page with simple ray lines. Ink the step’s texture last with a few short cracks or lines suggesting worn stone, which grounds the whole scene.
Steam lines drawn too stiff look like smoke from a fire rather than a warm drink, so keep them soft, curved and slightly uneven, more like a gentle wave than a straight zigzag. If a full step feels like too much, a single stone slab under the cup carries the scene just as well.
Color the cup leaf green or daffodil yellow, leave the steam uncolored or a very pale grey, and warm the step with a soft tan wash.
Palette: Leaf Green,Daffodil Yellow,Kraft Brown
Build a slightly larger scene with an open window, curtains lifting gently as a spring breeze moves through. Draw the window frame first as a simple rectangle divided into two or four panes, then add a short sill beneath it with a small potted plant resting there.
Add the curtains on either side billowing outward with soft curving lines, as if caught mid-movement by the breeze, and a few small swirl marks in the air suggesting the wind itself. Ink the window frame and panes last so the softer curtain lines stay the loosest, most energetic part of the drawing.
This is a good moment to think about where the light falls: decide whether the sun is outside or inside the room, then shade one side of the window frame slightly darker to match, which gives the flat rectangle a sense of depth. If curtains feel hard to make look windblown, draw them first in pencil as a few long diagonal swoops before inking over the best ones.
Color the window frame soft grey or leave it white, fill the curtains a pale version of leaf green or daffodil yellow, and add a small green plant on the sill.
Palette: Soft Grey,Leaf Green,Daffodil Yellow
Look ahead to warmer days with a simple checkered picnic blanket laid out and empty, waiting for the first proper sunny afternoon. Draw the blanket as one large rounded rectangle first, its edges slightly uneven to suggest fabric rather than a stiff board.
Fill the blanket with a checkered pattern, drawn as a light grid of crossing lines first in pencil, then inked over with alternating squares left white or colored. Add one small object resting on the corner last, a single daffodil or an open book, something small enough not to compete with the pattern.
Checkered patterns look best with consistent spacing, so measure a few evenly spaced tick marks along one edge before drawing your grid lines rather than guessing square sizes as you go. If a full checker pattern feels like too much work today, a simpler striped blanket covers the same idea in half the time.
Color alternating squares leaf green and leave others white, then add a single daffodil yellow flower resting on one corner of the blanket.
Palette: Leaf Green,Daffodil Yellow,Ink Black
Step up to a slightly more involved subject with a bicycle, its front basket overflowing with freshly cut daffodils. Draw the two wheels first as simple circles, evenly spaced apart, then connect them with the frame’s triangular lines before adding the handlebars and seat.
Build the basket at the front of the handlebars as a simple rounded container, then fill it with several daffodil heads and stems poking out at different angles, more lively than neat. Ink the spokes inside each wheel last, a handful of straight lines radiating from the center, which is far easier than trying to draw every single spoke a real bike has.
Keep both wheels exactly the same size by tracing around a small coin or cap for each one before inking, mismatched wheel sizes are the fastest way to make a bicycle look wrong. If a full frame feels ambitious today, a simpler version with just one visible wheel and a basket full of flowers still tells the whole story.
Color the daffodils daffodil yellow with leaf green stems, and leave the bicycle frame in a simple black outline or soft grey.
You Will Need

Palette: Daffodil Yellow,Leaf Green,Soft Grey
Bring a little character energy to the page with a girl in a raincoat caught mid-jump over a puddle, splashes flying up around her boots. Draw the figure first as simple shapes, an oval head, a rounded coat body, and two legs bent mid-air as if frozen in the jump.
Add the hood up over her head and two arms swung out for balance, then draw the puddle beneath her feet as a simple irregular oval with a few splash droplets flying outward from where her boots land. Ink the splash marks last, short curved lines radiating outward, which should feel energetic and slightly chaotic rather than neat.
Figures caught mid-action read as stiff if both legs point the same direction, so bend one knee higher than the other and angle the arms unevenly to suggest real movement. If full figures feel daunting, simplify her to a coat, hood and boots with no visible face at all, which still tells the whole story.
Color the raincoat daffodil yellow or leaf green, leave the boots a contrasting color, and keep the puddle a simple soft grey-blue with white splash marks.
Palette: Daffodil Yellow,Soft Blue,Soft Grey
Reference a photo of someone mid-jump if the pose feels stiff, noticing how both arms and legs tilt in different directions makes the whole figure feel alive.
Return to a gentler pace with a small umbrella held up over a single duckling caught in a light spring shower. Draw the umbrella first as a simple curved dome shape divided into panels by a few lines running from the center point down to the edge.
Add the duckling standing just beneath the umbrella’s edge, built from one round body and a smaller round head, a short triangular beak, and two small webbed feet. Ink the rain streaks falling just outside the umbrella’s reach last, short diagonal lines that stop short of the dry circle beneath the umbrella, which is what sells the shelter idea.
The umbrella panels are the trickiest part, so lightly sketch the center point first and let every panel line radiate outward from that exact spot before inking, uneven spacing is what makes an umbrella look collapsed rather than open. If the duckling’s webbed feet feel fiddly, a simple rounded triangle for each foot reads just fine at this size.
Color alternating umbrella panels leaf green and daffodil yellow, and leave the duckling a soft warm yellow all over.
Palette: Leaf Green,Daffodil Yellow,Soft Grey
Lift the eye up the page with a diamond-shaped kite caught mid-flight, its tail ribbons curling behind it in the wind. Draw the kite body first as a simple diamond, two crossing lines inside to suggest the frame struts, then add a long curling tail trailing from the bottom point.
Add a few bow-shaped ribbons spaced evenly along the tail, each one a simple loop rather than a flat triangle, which gives the tail real movement. Ink the string last, a single long wavy line trailing down off the page edge, loose rather than taut, as though a hand is holding it just out of frame.
Where the kite sits in the sky changes everything about this drawing: place it high and angled, as if seen from below looking up, and the whole scene reads as a breezy, open sky rather than a flat shape pinned to paper. If ribbon bows feel tricky, simple short dashes along the tail string still suggest movement well enough.
Color the kite body in alternating leaf green and daffodil yellow triangles, and leave the tail ribbons in whichever color was not used on the body.
Palette: Leaf Green,Daffodil Yellow,Soft Grey
Build toward a bigger payoff with a small pot of gold sitting right where a rainbow touches the ground. Draw the rainbow first as a series of nested curved arcs, keeping consistent spacing between each band by lightly marking a few guide dots before inking the full curve.
Add the pot at one end of the arc, a simple rounded cauldron shape with a few small circles piled inside suggesting coins, then a scatter of extra coin shapes spilling just outside the rim. Ink the coin details last, a simple curved line across each circle to suggest shine, which is far quicker than trying to draw every coin edge in full detail.
Rainbow arcs drawn freehand often end up lopsided, wider on one side than the other, so fold your page in half first to find the true center and start your widest arc from directly above that point. If a full rainbow feels like too many colors to juggle, just two bands, leaf green and daffodil yellow, still reads clearly as a rainbow in this doodle style.
Fill the arcs in alternating leaf green and daffodil yellow, and color the pot and coins a warm golden yellow throughout.
Palette: Leaf Green,Daffodil Yellow,Kraft Brown
Echo that rainbow idea from a different angle with a rainbow arching over a simple puddle on the ground, its colors faintly reflected in the water below. Draw the rainbow arcs the same way as before, consistent spacing marked with light guide dots, but this time keep it smaller and positioned higher on the page.
Add a simple irregular puddle shape beneath it on the ground, then echo just a hint of the rainbow’s colors as a soft reflected band inside the puddle’s edge. Ink the puddle’s outline last with a slightly wobbly, uneven line, which reads far more convincingly as water than a perfect oval would.
The reflection is what sells this whole scene, so keep it faint and simplified, just a thin curved band of color rather than a full mirrored rainbow, or it competes too much with the sky version above. If color feels like too much to manage twice, color only the sky rainbow fully and leave the puddle reflection as a light pencil shading instead.
Use leaf green and daffodil yellow for the rainbow bands, and a pale grey-blue wash for the puddle itself.
Palette: Leaf Green,Daffodil Yellow,Soft Blue
Give the weather a little personality with a small cloud drawn with a simple smiling face, raindrops falling from it like happy tears. Draw the cloud first as a series of overlapping bumps forming one soft rounded shape, keeping the bumps uneven in size so it feels fluffy rather than scalloped.
Add two small dot eyes and a gentle curved smile on the cloud’s face, then let a handful of raindrop shapes fall from its underside, each one a simple teardrop pointed downward. Ink the biggest raindrops closest to the cloud and the smallest furthest away last, which creates a sense of falling motion down the page.
A cloud face reads as sad rather than joyful if the eyebrows or eye shapes tilt downward, so keep the eyes simple round dots and let the smile do all the emotional work. If a full face feels too cartoonish for your taste, a plain cloud with raindrops still carries the March weather theme on its own.
Leave the cloud itself white or soft grey, and color the falling raindrops a pale leaf green or daffodil yellow for a cheerful, unexpected twist.

What to Do Next
Pick one idea that caught your eye, grab a fineliner and a scrap of paper, and draw it now while the idea is still fresh. A plain notebook page or a single sheet is all this needs, so there is nothing standing between you and a finished March doodle today.
Frequently Asked Questions
What pens work best for march doodles?
A black fineliner in a fine tip, around 0.3 to 0.5 millimeters, works best for clean outlines. Add leaf green and daffodil yellow markers afterward once the ink has fully dried to avoid smudging.
Do I need to know how to draw to start march doodles?
No prior drawing skill is needed, every idea here breaks down into simple shapes like ovals, triangles and curves. Start with the easiest subjects, like a tulip bud or a seed packet, before trying busier scenes.
How do I stop my fineliner ink from smudging under marker?
Let fineliner ink dry for at least a minute or two before adding marker color over or near it. Testing the marker on a scrap corner of the same paper first shows whether it bleeds through.
Can I do these doodles in a small notebook?
Yes, every idea in this list is designed to fit a notebook page or even a small corner of one. Simpler subjects like a clover or a teacup work especially well at a tiny scale.
What if I only have a black pen and no markers?
Every idea still works in black and white alone, since the line drawing carries the subject on its own. Leave areas white where color is suggested, or add light pencil shading instead for contrast.
