33 Face Doodles With Funny Expressions, Hairstyles and Little Characters

33

Face doodles are the fastest way to fill a page with personality, and this stretch of pin-worthy little characters proves it. Each one is a circle, a handful of features and one prop that tells the whole joke, so a few quiet minutes turn into a page full of winks, yawns and happy tears.

Below you will find 33 of them, ordered so the simplest expressions come first and the busier little scenes come later. Grab a fineliner and a peach or coral marker, pick whichever face matches your mood right now, and start sketching.

Start with the easiest expression in the whole set: a round face, one eye closed in a wink, and a small star floating near the winking eye. Draw the head as a circle with a fineliner, then add two dot eyebrows, one open eye and one curved line for the closed lid, a small nose dot and a simple curved mouth.

If this is your first time drawing faces, keep the circle loose rather than perfectly round, since a slightly uneven outline actually reads as friendlier. Color the cheeks with a light coral marker and leave the star as an outline so it pops against the line work.

The place this goes wrong is spacing the eyes too close together, which makes the face look pinched. Measure by leaving roughly one eye width of space between the two eyes before you commit to ink, sketching that gap lightly in pencil first if you want insurance.

Once this one feels easy, try the same face with the wink on the other side and the star swapped for a tiny heart.

Palette: Coral,Black

Following on from the winking face, try a sleepy expression topped with a floppy nightcap and a pom-pom. Draw the same round head shape, then give it two closed eyes as simple downward curves, a small sleepy mouth, and a soft striped cap that droops to one side with a little ball at the tip.

Work the cap first in pencil so the droop looks relaxed rather than stiff, then ink over it and add two or three stripes with your fineliner. A light coral blush on the cheeks warms up an otherwise sleepy, pale face.

Think about where the light falls here: a single soft source from above means the top of the cap stays lighter and the underside of the chin gets a thin shadow line. That small shift gives the doodle a bit of gentle volume without any real shading.

If you do not have a coral marker handy, a pink colored pencil blended lightly with a finger works as a stand in for the cheeks.

Palette: Peach,Coral,Black

Surprise is one of the most fun expressions to draw because the whole face opens up: wide circle eyes, raised eyebrows, and an open round mouth, all framed by a pair of round glasses. Start with the glasses first this time, two overlapping circles joined by a small bridge, since everything else on the face needs to fit inside and around them.

Add the eyes as dots or small circles centered inside each lens, then the eyebrows high above the frames and a round open mouth beneath. If the glasses come out too large, shrink the eyes rather than redrawing the whole face, since tiny eyes inside big round frames actually reads as more surprised, not less.

The easy trick for keeping both lenses the same size is tracing around a small coin or bottle cap before you ink, which saves you from freehanding two wobbly circles that never quite match. Finish with a coral flush across the nose bridge where the glasses rest.

Try this one again later with square glasses instead of round for a different personality entirely.

You Will Need

• small circular object to trace for the glasses

Palette: Coral,Black

Move from surprise to its opposite: a face laughing so hard the eyes crinkle shut. Draw the head, then instead of open eyes use two upward curved lines like little rainbows, which is the classic shorthand for a joyful squeezed-shut eye. The mouth is a wide open oval showing a simple row of teeth.

Build the laugh lines around the eyes next, three short curved strokes fanning out from each eye corner, since those tiny marks do more to sell genuine laughter than the mouth does. Keep your fineliner pressure light here so the lines stay delicate rather than heavy.

A quick ten minute version stops right there with a coral blush on the cheeks. A forty minute version adds a few stray hair strands bouncing off the top of the head and small motion lines near the shoulders to suggest the whole body shaking with laughter.

Keep the mouth wide and the eyes tightly shut, since a laughing face with open eyes reads as a shout instead.

Palette: Peach,Coral,Black

Add a prop that takes over the whole lower half of the face: a round pink bubblegum bubble stretching out from puckered lips. Draw the head and eyes first, keeping them relaxed and half closed since blowing a bubble takes concentration, then draw the bubble as a large circle attached to the mouth by a thin neck of gum.

Color the bubble in solid coral or pink marker and leave one small white highlight unfilled near the top so it reads as glossy rather than flat. The easiest way to keep the bubble round is the same coin trace trick from the glasses doodle.

This goes wrong most often when the bubble is drawn too small to read clearly, so size it at least as wide as the whole face if not wider. A bold prop like this is one you will want to revisit in a food doodles session, where plenty of other playful snack props follow the same big and bold rule.

If your marker bleeds through thin paper, switch to a slightly heavier cardstock page for this one.

You Will Need

• marker-friendly paper or cardstock

Palette: Coral,Peach,Black

Shift the mood with a grumpy face sitting under its own small rain cloud, a classic way to draw a bad mood without a single word. Give the face a flat straight mouth, angled down eyebrows pressed close together, and narrow unimpressed eyes, then draw a puffy cloud shape hovering just above the head with a few short diagonal rain lines underneath.

Ink the eyebrows thick and close to the eyes, since that single choice carries most of the grumpiness. Keep the mouth short and flat rather than curved in either direction, since even a tiny downward curl reads as sad instead of grumpy.

One hands on trick worth trying here is a kneaded eraser pulled gently through a pencil sketch of the rain lines before inking, which softens them into a slightly uneven, more natural drizzle rather than ruler straight lines. Shade the cloud lightly with gray colored pencil if you want it to feel heavier.

Keep the coral marker only for the cheeks here, since too much warm color fights against the grumpy mood.

Palette: Peach,Black,Gray

Swing the mood back up with a classic lovestruck face: two heart shapes standing in for the eyes and a wide dreamy smile. Draw the head, then two small heart outlines side by side where the eyes would go, keeping them the same size by sketching a light horizontal guideline across the face first.

Color the hearts solid coral and leave the smile as a simple open curve beneath them. Compare the width of the mouth to the width between the two hearts before inking, since a mouth that is much wider than the heart spacing throws the whole face off balance.

A few small floating hearts scattered around the head finish the doodle if you have extra time, or you can stop right after the main face for a faster version. This playful heart motif pairs nicely with anything made for Christmas doodles or other gift tag style projects later on.

Keep the hearts small and tidy rather than oversized, since giant hearts start to look more like glasses than eyes.

Palette: Coral,Black

Give this face a bit more personality with hair: a messy bun with a pencil stuck through it, the universal sign of someone deep in work. Draw the head and calm, slightly tired features first, then add the bun as a rounded scribble shape sitting high on top of the head with a few loose strands escaping around the face.

Push the pencil through the bun at a diagonal angle rather than straight up, which looks far more natural and less like a decoration glued on top. Keep the scribble inside the bun loose and circular rather than tight, since a tightly controlled scribble looks stiff.

If the bun ends up lopsided, that is fine and even helpful, since a perfectly symmetrical bun actually looks less convincing than a slightly tilted one. Add a coral marker flush at the cheeks and a thin line under the eyes for a touch of tiredness.

Try this hairstyle again later on a completely different expression to see how much a hairstyle alone changes a character.

Palette: Peach,Coral,Black

Move into food territory with a face mid-bite on a glazed donut, one of the easiest excuses to draw a wide open happy mouth. Sketch the head with closed happy eyes and a big open mouth taking a bite, then draw the donut as a simple ring shape held up near the mouth with a bite missing from one edge.

Color the donut glaze in coral marker with a few small dot sprinkles left white or filled in with a contrasting pencil. The bite mark is the detail most people rush, so take an extra moment to make its edge curved and soft rather than jagged, since a jagged bite looks more like damage than a bite.

A quick ten minute version keeps the donut plain glazed. A forty minute version adds a drip of glaze running down toward the hand and a chocolate version with different sprinkle colors.

If you want more food-led practice after this one, a whole page of easy watercolor food ideas keeps the same playful, bite-sized approach in paint instead of pen.

Palette: Coral,Peach,Black

Bring in some sunshine with a face dotted in freckles and topped with a wide brimmed sunhat. Draw the head and a relaxed closed-eye smile first, then scatter small freckle dots across the nose and cheeks using the very tip of your fineliner, keeping them loosely clustered rather than evenly spaced like a grid.

Draw the hat as a wide oval brim with a shallow dome on top, tilted slightly so one side of the brim sits lower than the other. A tilted brim reads as far more relaxed than a perfectly level one, so resist the urge to straighten it.

Color the cheeks and nose area in warm coral to suggest a light sunburn, which also ties the freckles together visually instead of leaving them floating. If your fineliner tip is too thick for fine freckle dots, a sharp pencil works as a softer substitute.

Keep the freckle cluster asymmetrical across the two cheeks, since perfectly matching freckle patterns look oddly artificial.

Palette: Peach,Coral,Black

Keep the playful energy going with a classic sticking-out-tongue face, one wink or one squeezed eye paired with a long tongue hanging out the side of an open mouth. Draw the head, one closed scrunched eye and one open eye, then an open mouth with the tongue drawn as a rounded shape extending past the chin line.

Color the tongue solid coral and leave a thin center line down the middle for a touch of texture. The mistake to watch for is making the tongue too short, which reads as timid rather than cheeky, so let it extend clearly past the edge of the jaw.

Compare the tongue length to the width of the mouth opening before inking: a tongue roughly twice as long as the mouth is wide looks properly silly. If you want a slightly softer version, shrink the tongue and soften the squint into a gentler half-closed eye.

Next time, pair this expression with a different prop, like sunglasses pushed down the nose, for a cooler variation.

Palette: Coral,Black

Give this face something to listen to: a pair of over-ear headphones and a few music notes drifting away from them. Draw the head with closed, relaxed eyes and a small content smile, then build the headphones as two rounded ear cups connected by a curved band arching over the top of the head.

Keep the band curve shallow rather than tall, since a band that arches too high looks detached from the head instead of resting on it. Add two or three small music notes drifting off to one side in coral, varying their size slightly so they feel like they are floating rather than lined up.

This is a good one to practice light pressure control with your fineliner, since the thin curved cord lines benefit from a steady, even line rather than a shaky one. If your pen keeps catching on the paper, try holding it at a slightly higher angle.

Vary this one later by swapping the music notes for little sound waves if you want a more modern feel.

Palette: Peach,Coral,Black

Soften things with a face crowned in a simple ring of small flowers. Draw the head with a gentle closed-mouth smile, then sketch a light curved guideline across the top of the head to mark where the crown sits before adding individual flowers along it, each one just a small circle of five simple petals.

Vary the flower sizes slightly as you go around the crown so it does not look mechanically repeated, and leave small gaps between flowers for a leaf or two drawn as simple pointed ovals. Color alternating flowers in coral and leave a few blank for visual rest.

If you enjoy this kind of small repeating pattern, the same patience carries over well into the butterfly coloring pages, where wing patterns ask for the same steady, repeated touch.

Keep the crown sitting on top of the head rather than wrapping too far down toward the ears, since a crown drawn too low starts to look like a hat instead.

Palette: Coral,Peach,Black

Capture that exact early morning moment with a wide yawning mouth and a steaming coffee cup held up close to the chin. Draw the head with heavy half closed eyes and a tall oval yawning mouth, then the coffee cup as a simple handled mug with two or three wavy steam lines rising above it.

Keep the steam lines loose and slightly curved rather than straight, since straight steam lines look more like smoke than warmth. Color the coffee a warm coral-brown mix and leave the cup itself white or lightly shaded.

One hands-on trick that helps here is using the side of a sharpened pencil very lightly under the eyes before inking over it, which gives a soft gray hint of under-eye tiredness without any heavy shading. A kneaded eraser can lift that graphite back if it goes too dark.

Keep the mug smaller than the yawning mouth so the face stays the clear focus of the doodle.

Palette: Peach,Coral,Black

Draw a shy little scene next: a face peeking just over the top edge of an open book, cheeks glowing with a blush. Start with the book itself, a simple open shape like a wide shallow V with a center spine line, then add the face peeking above it, showing only the eyes, eyebrows and the top of the nose.

Keep the eyes wide and slightly raised in surprise or shyness, and add a few short curved lines on each cheek just above the book edge to suggest the blush peeking through. Color those cheek areas solid coral for maximum effect.

The easiest way to keep the book believable is drawing a few short horizontal lines along its pages for a hint of texture, without trying to draw every page edge. If you prefer, a stack of two or three books works just as well as a single open one.

Vary this later with the face peeking over a laptop screen instead of a book for a different little story.

Palette: Coral,Black

Return to hairstyles with two neat braids finished off with small bows at the ends. Draw the head and a calm happy expression first, then sketch each braid as a simple zigzag or a series of small overlapping ovals running down from just behind the ear to past the chin line.

Keep both braids roughly the same length by marking their end points with a light pencil dot before inking, since mismatched braid lengths are the most common slip here. Add a small bow at the end of each braid, drawn as two triangles meeting at a center knot, and color them in alternating peach and coral.

If the zigzag pattern inside the braid starts looking too busy, simplify it to just three or four segments rather than many tiny ones, which actually reads as a cleaner braid from a small doodle distance.

Try swapping the bows for small flowers next time using the same braid structure.

Palette: Peach,Coral,Black

Carry the warm mood forward into a face crying from pure happiness, a wide joyful smile paired with tear streams running down both cheeks. Draw the head with a big smiling mouth and crinkled closed eyes similar to the earlier laughing face, then add tear drops as simple elongated teardrop shapes trailing from each eye corner down toward the jaw.

Keep the smile wide enough to clearly outweigh the tears, since the balance between the two is what tells the viewer these are happy tears and not sad ones. Color the tears a very light blue or leave them as outline only so they do not compete with the coral cheeks underneath.

A quick ten minute version uses one tear per eye. A forty minute version adds a small cluster of two or three tears trailing off each side for a more dramatic, emotional moment.

Keep the eyebrows raised and relaxed rather than furrowed, since furrowed brows shift the whole mood toward distress instead of joy.

Palette: Coral,Peach,Black

Try a trickier mouth shape next: a face mid-whistle with lips pursed into a small tight circle and a few musical note marks drifting away. Draw the head with relaxed closed or half-closed eyes, then the mouth as a small tight oval rather than the usual wide curve, positioned slightly off to one side for a more natural look.

Add two or three short curved lines trailing from the mouth to suggest the sound of the whistle, plus a tiny music note or two floating further out. Keep that pursed mouth small, since a whistle mouth drawn too wide starts to look like a surprised O instead.

This expression benefits from comparing it directly to a few of the other mouths in this set before you ink: hold your sketch next to the earlier surprised or laughing faces, and if the mouth looks too similar to either, shrink it down further until it reads clearly as a whistle.

Keep the coral marker to a light cheek touch only here, since the whistle lines need the visual space to read clearly.

Palette: Peach,Coral,Black

Add a costume element with a face hiding behind a classic curled mustache and perhaps a pair of eyebrows to match. Draw the head with wide alert eyes, since a disguise face usually looks like it is trying a little too hard to seem casual, then add the mustache as two symmetrical curled shapes meeting just above the upper lip.

Build the curl by starting thick near the center and tapering each end into a thin curled tip, almost like a small wave shape on each side. Keep both sides matching by sketching a light vertical center guideline first so neither curl drifts off balance.

Color the mustache solid black and leave the rest of the face plain except for a small coral cheek touch, since too much color distracts from the comedy of the disguise itself. A thinner mustache style works just as well if the curled version feels fiddly at first.

Pair this one with a monocle or a tiny hat later for a fuller disguise character.

Palette: Coral,Black

Move into a spa day moment with a face wearing a textured sheet mask and two round cucumber slices covering the eyes. Draw the head shape first, then a mask outline that follows the edge of the face closely, leaving small gaps for the eyes, nostrils and mouth, similar to how a real sheet mask sits.

Add the two cucumber circles directly over the eye area, each with a thin ring near the edge and a few small seed dots in the center to read clearly as cucumber slices rather than plain circles. Color the mask a very pale green or leave it white, and keep the cucumber slices a light green with the thin outer ring left white.

If the textured mask pattern feels fussy to draw, a few short dashed lines across the surface is enough suggestion of texture without needing to fill the whole shape in detail. Keep the mouth relaxed in a small closed smile for that pampered, at-ease feeling.

Try a bath towel turban on the head next time for the same relaxed spa theme.

Palette: Peach,Green,Black

Lift the mood with a celebratory face wearing a tall pointed party hat trimmed with a little pom-pom and a few confetti pieces scattered around. Draw the head with a wide open happy smile, then the hat as a simple triangle shape sitting at a slight tilt on top of the head, finished with a small circle pom-pom at the tip.

Add a thin curved elastic strap running from one side of the hat down under the chin, which is a small detail that sells the whole party hat idea instantly. Scatter a handful of small confetti shapes, little squares and circles, loosely around the head and color them in alternating coral and peach.

Keep the hat tilt consistent with the direction of the smile, since a hat tilted one way and a face smiling the opposite way can look slightly off balance. If stripes on the hat feel like too much, a few simple dots achieve the same festive feeling with less drawing.

Save this one for birthday cards or quick celebratory notes once you have it down.

Palette: Coral,Peach,Black

Give this face a sudden idea: eyes looking slightly upward, one eyebrow raised, and a small glowing lightbulb floating above the head. Draw the head with that thoughtful upward gaze first, since the direction of the eyes is what sells the thinking pose more than anything else on the face.

Add the lightbulb as a simple circle with a small rectangular base, then a few short lines radiating outward from it to suggest a sudden glow. Color the bulb a light coral-yellow mix and leave the radiating lines as plain black outline so the glow still reads clearly on white paper.

Compare the size of the lightbulb to the size of the head before committing to ink, since a bulb drawn too large overwhelms the face and a bulb too small gets lost. Roughly a third of the head’s width is a reliable size to aim for.

Vary this one later with a small thought bubble instead of a lightbulb for a softer, quieter version of the same idea.

Palette: Coral,Peach,Black

Bring in another bold hairstyle: a large rounded afro with a small pick comb tucked into the side. Draw the head and a calm confident expression first, then build the afro as one large rounded cloud shape surrounding the top and sides of the head, keeping the outer edge slightly bumpy rather than perfectly smooth.

Fill the afro shape with small scribbled texture marks rather than trying to outline every strand individually, which keeps the whole hairstyle feeling light and quick to draw. Add the pick as a simple handle with a few thin tines sticking out, tucked at an angle into one side of the afro.

If the afro outline comes out lopsided on the first try, even that works in its favor, since a touch of asymmetry in a rounded hairstyle like this reads as natural rather than careless. Keep the scribble texture loose and let some white paper show through rather than filling it solid black.

Keep the face features small and simple so the hairstyle stays the clear star of this doodle.

Palette: Peach,Black

Draw a bright day onto the page with a face squinting hard against strong sunlight, one hand shading the eyes if you want to add it. Give the face narrow squinted eyes pressed almost shut, raised cheeks pushing up from a wide grin, and a small sun shape in the upper corner with simple radiating lines.

Place that sun off to one side rather than directly above the head, then angle a few short shadow lines on the opposite side of the nose and chin to suggest the light is coming from that direction. That single choice gives the doodle a clear light source without any real shading work.

Color the sun solid coral-yellow and leave its rays as thin black lines radiating outward unevenly, since perfectly even rays look more like a dial than sunlight. Keep the squint tight and the cheeks raised high, since a gentle squint reads as sleepy rather than sun-bright.

Add a small raised hand shading the brow next time for a slightly more involved version of the same idea.

Palette: Coral,Peach,Black

Take a small trip to a cafe table with a face wearing a soft beret and holding a croissant up near the mouth. Draw the head and a relaxed content smile first, then the beret as a flattened rounded shape sitting slightly tilted to one side with a tiny stem poking up from its center.

Build the croissant next as a simple curved crescent shape with two or three diagonal lines across it to suggest the layered pastry texture, held just below the chin as though about to take a bite. Color the croissant a warm coral-gold and the beret a flat solid black or deep coral for contrast.

If the beret shape looks too much like a plain circle at first, flatten the bottom edge slightly where it meets the head, since that small flattening is what makes a beret read as a beret instead of a hat with no brim at all.

Add a tiny striped scarf around the neck later for a fuller cafe character.

Palette: Coral,Peach,Black

Build a small moment of nervous curiosity next: a face half-hidden behind an open hand, peeking through a gap between two fingers. Draw the hand first as a simple open palm shape held in front of the lower half of the face, with the fingers spread just enough to leave a narrow gap for one eye to show through.

Draw just a sliver of the face visible through that gap, one wide curious eye and a hint of eyebrow, with the rest of the face implied behind the covering hand. Keep the hand shape simple, five rounded finger shapes rather than detailed knuckles or nails, since too much hand detail pulls focus away from the peeking eye.

The place this goes wrong is making the finger gap too wide, which shows too much face and loses the shy peeking feeling, so keep that gap narrow, just enough for one eye and a sliver of eyebrow. A light coral blush just visible at the edge of the hand adds a nice touch of shyness.

Keep practicing this hand shape, since it carries over well into other half-hidden character doodles later.

Palette: Peach,Coral,Black

Draw a small clumsy character next: a face with a simple crossed bandage stuck over the bridge of the nose. Give the face a slightly sheepish half smile and raised eyebrows, then draw the bandage as two small rectangular strips crossing over each other directly on the nose bridge, each with a few short perpendicular lines along the edges to suggest stitching or texture.

Keep the bandage small relative to the whole face, since an oversized bandage looks closer to a mask than a small patch. Color it plain white or very pale peach so it stands out clearly against the line work without competing with the coral cheeks.

If straight rectangular bandage shapes feel stiff, round off the corners slightly, which instantly makes the shape read as soft fabric rather than a stiff cardboard patch. A single straight strip works just as well as the crossed version if you prefer a simpler shape.

Give this same clumsy little character a bandaged finger or a small bruise on the next page for a fuller story.

Palette: Peach,Coral,Black

Capture a mid-sneeze moment with scrunched up features and a small tissue held up just below the nose. Draw the head with tightly scrunched closed eyes, a wrinkled nose and an open mouth mid-sneeze, then add the tissue as a simple folded square shape held in a small hand just below the chin.

Add a few short motion lines near the nose and mouth to suggest the sudden burst of the sneeze, keeping them short and sharp rather than long and curved like the earlier whistle sound lines. That difference in line style is what separates a sneeze from a whistle at a glance.

Color the tissue plain white with a thin outline, and give the nose a touch of coral to show it is a little irritated. If drawing a separate hand feels fiddly, the tissue can simply float just below the chin without a visible hand holding it.

Keep the eyes tightly shut and the eyebrows pulled down and together, since open eyes undercut the whole sneezing effect.

Palette: Coral,Peach,Black

Keep building on small props with a dazed, dreamy face surrounded by a scatter of small stars, as though just a little stunned or starstruck. Draw the head with slightly crossed or swirling eyes and a loose open mouth, then scatter five or six small star outlines of varying sizes loosely around the head rather than in a neat ring.

Vary the star sizes and rotations as you place them, since a set of identical same-size stars looks mechanical while varied ones feel like they are genuinely floating and spinning. Color roughly half the stars solid coral and leave the rest as plain outline for a bit of visual rhythm.

This pairs naturally with the earlier winking star face from the start of this list, and comparing the two side by side shows how the same simple star shape can support two very different moods depending on the expression underneath it.

Keep the face expression loose and slightly wobbly, since a dazed expression benefits from asymmetry more than most other faces in this set.

Palette: Coral,Peach,Black

Move into a gentle character portrait with a sweet grandma face wearing small round pearl-trimmed glasses and a soft curled hairstyle. Draw the head with warm smiling eyes and a few short curved lines near the eyes and mouth to suggest gentle age, then the glasses as small round frames with a scatter of tiny dot pearls along the top edge of each lens.

Build the hair as a series of soft rounded curls close to the head, each curl drawn as a simple spiral or C-shape rather than one continuous outline, which keeps the hairstyle looking soft rather than stiff. Color the cheeks a gentle coral and leave the curls plain black or soft gray.

Compare the glasses size to the earlier surprised face glasses doodle: pearl glasses here sit smaller and sit a little lower on the nose, which alone shifts the whole read from surprised young face to warm older one.

Add a small knitted collar at the base of the neck next time for a fuller character.

Palette: Coral,Gray,Black

Settle into a quiet nighttime scene with a face resting sideways on a pillow, eyes shut and mouth slightly open mid-dream. Draw the pillow first as a simple soft rectangle with rounded corners and a few short fold lines across its surface, then rest the head on top of it tilted to one side rather than facing straight forward.

Keep the sleeping eyes as simple closed curves and add a tiny open mouth with a short curved line to suggest soft breathing. A small zzz mark or two floating just above the head finishes the sleepy feeling without needing any other detail.

The tilt of the head is the detail most worth getting right here, since a face drawn facing straight ahead while supposedly resting on a pillow looks stiff and awkward. Tilt it a clear fifteen to twenty degrees to one side for a convincingly relaxed pose.

If you enjoy these quieter cozy scenes, the same slow pace suits the ideas in winter doodles just as well.

Palette: Peach,Coral,Black

Head underwater for this one with a face wearing a full snorkel mask and breathing tube, eyes wide behind the lens. Draw the mask first as a rounded shape covering the eyes and nose, with a thick outline to suggest the rubber seal and a simple curved tube rising from one side up past the top of the head.

Draw the eyes a touch larger than usual behind the mask lens, since the glass slightly exaggerates whatever sits behind it, and that small enlargement reads as realistic rather than wrong. Keep the mouth plain and relaxed below the mask, since the mouth itself usually sits outside the mask on a real snorkel setup.

Color the mask strap and tube in solid coral for a pop of color against the mostly black and white face. If the curved tube looks stiff when drawn in one single stroke, break it into two or three short connected curves instead for a more natural bend.

This small ocean-themed face pairs well with a wider dip into ocean doodles if you want to keep the underwater mood going.

Palette: Coral,Peach,Black

Close the set with a cozy face holding up a pumpkin spice latte in a tall cup topped with whipped cream and a sprinkle of spice. Draw the head with closed content eyes and a small relaxed smile, then the cup as a simple tapered rectangle shape with a domed swirl of whipped cream piped on top and a few small dots scattered across it for spice.

Add two or three short wavy steam lines rising from the cream, matching the loose curved style used earlier on the coffee doodle so the two feel like they belong to the same little set. Color the cup body in warm coral-orange and leave the whipped cream dome plain white with a thin black outline.

Keep the cup proportioned a little smaller than the face itself so the warm expression stays the main focus rather than the drink overwhelming the page.

As a last concrete tip across this whole set: keep every prop, whether a cup, a hat or a pair of glasses, slightly smaller than you first think to draw it, since faces read best when the expression stays the biggest shape on the page.

Palette: Coral,Peach,Black

What to Do Next

Pick whichever expression matches your mood right now, grab a plain page and your fineliner, and work through the steps in order rather than rushing the mouth or hair first. One finished face today is plenty, and the rest of the list will still be here the next time you want a quick, satisfying little sketch.

Frequently Asked Questions

What pens work best for face doodles?

A black fineliner in a fine tip around 0.3 to 0.5 millimeters works best for face doodles, since it gives clean outlines without bleeding through thin paper. Add a dual tip marker in peach and coral for quick color accents on cheeks and small props.

How do you make doodle faces look less stiff?

Keep the outer head shape loosely round rather than a perfect circle, and let features sit slightly off-center rather than perfectly symmetrical. Small imperfections in eye spacing, hair curls or hat tilts are what make a face doodle feel alive instead of traced.

Do I need to know how to draw realistic faces first?

No, face doodles rely on simplified shapes rather than realistic proportions, so no formal drawing background is needed. Focus on the eyebrows and mouth shape, since those two features carry most of the expression in a simple doodled face.

How long does one face doodle take to finish?

Most of these faces take somewhere between ten and twenty minutes depending on how many extra props or hair details are added. Simpler expressions like a wink or a yawn finish fastest, while hairstyle or prop heavy ideas run closer to thirty or forty minutes.

What is the easiest face doodle to start with?

A simple smiling or winking face with minimal props is the easiest starting point, since it needs only a round head, two eyes, eyebrows and a mouth. Build confidence there before adding hairstyles, glasses or food props from later ideas in this list.
