34 Koala Painting Ideas and Other Australian Animals

38

A koala painting is one of those subjects that gives you maximum cuddle factor for fairly little effort: round ears, a big grey nose and soft fur you can build with a dry brush in minutes. This list starts with koalas doing something small and specific, from hugging a trunk to riding a surfboard, then moves on to the kangaroos, quokkas and other sunny Australian characters that pair so well with them on a wall.

Every idea below is built to finish in one sitting with ordinary acrylics, so pick whichever one makes you smile first and get started. You will find a measuring trick, a lighting note, a texture trick and a quick-version option scattered through the list, so by the end you will have picked up a handful of tricks you can use on any animal you paint next.

Start the whole list with a koala hugging a eucalyptus trunk, since the pose does half the work for you. Block in the trunk first as a warm grey-brown column running the height of the canvas, then paint the koala’s body as one soft oval wrapped around it with short curved strokes so the arms read as hugging rather than just sitting beside the bark.

Work fur over the base color once it’s dry, using a dry flat brush loaded with a slightly lighter warm grey and flicking outward from the body edge. Keep the face for last: two dark ovals for eyes, a large leathery nose in deep grey-brown, and pale fur tufts at the ear rims.

The pose tends to go wrong when the paws disappear into the trunk with no sense of grip, so leave a sliver of trunk color showing between each claw. If you don’t have a stiff dry brush, an old flat brush with the bristles slightly worn works just as well for the fur flicks.

Measure the koala’s head against its body before you commit to paint: on a real koala the head is roughly a third of the total height, and keeping that ratio is what makes the hug look cuddly instead of oddly proportioned.

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Raw Umber,Titanium White,Eucalyptus Green

Once the hug feels comfortable, try a koala joey riding on its mother’s back, which is really two koalas painted at different scales on one trunk. Paint the mother first as the larger shape, gripping the bark with all four limbs, then add the joey as a smaller rounder version perched just behind her shoulders with its paws hooked into her fur.

Build both bodies in the same warm grey base, but mix a touch more white into the joey’s coat so she reads as the smaller, paler youngster beside her mother. Fur texture goes on last with a dry brush, working mother and joey separately so neither coat looks flattened into the other.

The scene reads wrong if the joey looks glued on rather than gripping, so give her a slight lean and tuck one paw behind the mother’s ear. Swap a kitchen sponge dabbed lightly for the dry brush if that’s what you have on hand, it gives a similar broken fur edge.

Measure the joey’s head as roughly two-thirds the size of the mother’s head, since joeys have proportionally large heads and eyes, and that ratio is what sells the baby animal charm.

Give yourself an easier afternoon with a koala asleep in the fork of a tree, since a sleeping pose means no tricky eye contact to get right. Paint the tree fork as a simple Y shape first, then nestle the koala’s rounded body into the crook so gravity and the branch both seem to be holding it in place.

Keep the face soft and closed, a gentle curve for the shut eyes and a relaxed downturned nose, then build the body fur with loose dry-brush strokes that follow the curl of the sleeping shape. Let the background stay a flat warm sky color so nothing competes with the sleepy mood.

This pose goes wrong when the limbs look stiff instead of draped, so round off every joint and let one paw hang loosely off the branch. No stiff brush on hand? A piece of folded cardboard dipped in paint and dabbed lightly gives a similar soft texture.

For the ten-minute version, keep the whole koala as one rounded mass with minimal limb detail; the forty-minute version adds individual claws, ear fur wisps and a cast shadow along the branch for more depth.

Palette: Warm Grey,Raw Umber,Eucalyptus Green,Pale Ochre

Move into action with a koala munching eucalyptus leaves, a pose that lets you have fun with the leaves as much as the fur. Paint a cluster of long eucalyptus leaves first in two greens, a cooler sage and a warmer olive, then set the koala’s head close against them with one leaf held near its mouth.

Build the face with the nose and half-open eyes first, since the munching expression lives mostly in a slightly lowered head and a leaf overlapping the chin. Add fur texture around the face and shoulders afterward so the leaf stays crisp and readable against the softer fur edges.

The leaf often ends up looking stuck on rather than held, so overlap it slightly across the lower jaw and add one small shadow where it crosses the fur. If you’re low on green, mix your blue and yellow fresh on the palette rather than relying on a tube green, it gives a livelier eucalyptus color.

One concrete tip for today: paint the leaves before the fur touches them, since clean leaf edges over dry fur look far crisper than fur painted around a finished leaf.

Palette: Sap Green,Olive Green,Warm Grey,Titanium White

Add a travel touch with a koala in a sun hat, a little character piece that works well once you’ve got the plain fur pose comfortable. Paint the koala’s head and shoulders first as usual, then place a simple straw hat shape over the top of the head, tilted slightly so one ear pokes out from under the brim.

Mix the hat in warm ochre with a thin darker line for the brim’s underside shadow, and keep a soft ribbon or band in a contrasting color like sky blue for a cheerful travel-poster feel. Fur texture goes in around the hat edge last, so a few strokes overlap the brim and the hat looks worn rather than floating above the head.

Hats often look pasted on flat, so curve the brim slightly to follow the round of the head and add a small cast shadow across the forehead. No ochre in the kit? Mix yellow ochre from raw sienna and a touch of white.

If this is your first time adding a prop to an animal portrait, keep the hat simple and let the koala’s face stay the main event; one clean shape reads better than a fussy woven texture.

Palette: Ochre,Sky Blue,Warm Grey,Raw Umber

Try adding small round sunglasses instead of a hat brim shadow for an even more playful travel postcard look.

Keep the holiday mood going with a koala in a hammock, strung loosely between two eucalyptus trunks. Paint the hammock first as a simple curved sling in a striped fabric color, letting the curve dip low in the middle so the weight of the body feels believable once the koala goes in.

Nestle the koala’s body into the lowest point of the curve, limbs draped lazily over each side, then build fur texture over the body while leaving the hammock fabric flat and smooth for contrast. A relaxed half-closed eye finishes the lazy afternoon feeling.

The hammock often ends up looking stiff and straight, so make sure the curve sags more under the koala’s middle than at the tied ends. If stripes feel fiddly, a plain woven texture in one warm color works just as well and paints faster.

For a quicker ten-minute version, skip the stripes and paint the hammock as one flat ochre shape; the forty-minute version adds rope texture at the ends and a dappled light pattern falling across the fabric from the leaves above.

Palette: Ochre,Warm Grey,Eucalyptus Green,Sky Blue

Build on the single-koala poses with two koalas cuddling, side by side with their heads tipped toward each other. Block in both bodies as one connected soft shape first rather than two separate circles, since overlapping the forms is what makes the cuddle look natural instead of two animals just standing close.

Vary the grey slightly between the two so they stay visually distinct, a warmer grey for one and a cooler grey for the other, then build fur texture over each body separately so the boundary between them stays soft but visible. Keep both faces turned gently inward toward each other rather than facing forward.

Cuddling pairs often go flat when both heads sit at the same height, so raise one slightly and tilt it toward the other for a more affectionate feel. If mixing two greys feels tricky, add a whisper more blue to one batch and a touch more brown to the other.

Compare the two heads directly before you paint final fur details: keeping one a touch smaller than the other reads as a couple rather than identical twins, which makes the whole piece warmer.

Palette: Warm Grey,Cool Grey,Raw Umber,Titanium White

Try a bit more expression with a koala yawning, a pose that lives entirely in the open mouth and squeezed eyes. Paint the head shape first, then carve out a wide oval mouth opening before any fur goes on, since getting that shape confident early saves you from painting over a timid line later.

Add a pale pink interior to the mouth with a small darker shadow at the back of the throat, then bring the fur in around the stretched cheeks and squeezed shut eyes last. The ears often tip back slightly during a yawn, so angle them a touch further from upright than in a resting pose.

Yawns look unconvincing if the mouth stays a thin slit, so commit to a properly wide oval even if it feels exaggerated on the canvas. Pink paint missing from your set? Mix a touch of red into white for a soft believable mouth color.

One tip for today: paint the eyes as tight closed curves rather than dots, since closed squeezed eyes are what makes a yawn read instantly rather than looking like a surprised stare.

Palette: Warm Grey,Soft Pink,Raw Umber,Titanium White

Add a sense of motion with a koala climbing down for a drink, reaching one paw toward a small puddle or waterhole at the base of the trunk. Paint the trunk at a diagonal this time rather than straight up, since the angle itself suggests the climb before you’ve added a single limb.

Place the koala midway down the trunk with its head and front paw angled toward the water below, then paint the water as a simple reflective blue-grey patch with a pale highlight. Fur goes on last, following the direction of the climb so the strokes lean slightly downward along the body.

Climbing poses often look static if all four limbs grip at the same angle, so vary the paw positions, two gripping bark and one reaching for the water. No trunk reference handy? Any straight stick or fence post photo gives you a believable diagonal to copy.

Look at where the light falls before you finish the fur: if the sun comes from one side, keep the trunk and the koala’s near side brighter and let the far side sit in a cooler shadow for a believable outdoor glow.

Palette: Warm Grey,Raw Umber,Sky Blue,Eucalyptus Green

Round off the opening set of ideas with a koala in a gum tree at sunset, which gives you a chance to play with warm light instead of the flat daylight used so far. Paint the sky first as a graded wash from deep orange at the horizon to soft pink higher up, then add the gum tree silhouette once that’s dry.

Keep the koala mostly in silhouette too, with just a rim of warm orange light along the top edge of its back and ear to show the sun behind it. A few simplified leaf clusters in dark silhouette finish the tree without needing individual leaf detail.

Sunset scenes go wrong when the koala looks lit from the front instead of behind, so resist adding front-facing fur highlights and let the body stay mostly dark. If you don’t have an orange premixed, mix it fresh from a warm yellow and a touch of red right before you need it.

For the quick ten-minute version, keep the tree as one dark shape and the koala as a simple silhouette; the forty-minute version adds individual branch shapes and a soft glow where the light rims the fur.

Palette: Deep Orange,Soft Pink,Payne’s Grey,Warm Grey

Bring in some travel humor with a koala on a surfboard, paws braced and ears pinned back as if catching a wave. Paint the surfboard first as a long simple oval in a bright color, then set the koala standing or crouching on top with its body leaning slightly forward into an imaginary wave.

Keep the pose a little cartoonish and confident, front paws out for balance and the head tilted up, since a stiff upright koala reads as standing rather than surfing. Add a simple curling wave shape in sky blue and white beneath the board once the koala is dry.

The whole scene can look static if the surfboard sits flat and level, so angle it slightly uphill as though riding the crest of a wave. If you want a bolder look, add a single stripe of a bright accent color down the board rather than a busy pattern.

Measure the koala against the board before you commit: keeping the koala roughly the same length as the board reads as a fun, confident scale rather than a tiny koala lost on an oversized board.

Palette: Sky Blue,Titanium White,Warm Grey,Coral

Give the koala section a gentle finish with a koala in a tree beside a wildlife carer, a small scene that pairs the animal with a simple human figure. Paint the koala first in its usual tree pose, then add the carer as a simplified figure standing at the base, one arm raised gently toward the branch, wearing a plain sunhat and shirt in a warm neutral color.

Keep the figure loose and iconic rather than detailed, a simple rounded head, basic shirt shape and arm gesture is enough to tell the story without pulling focus from the koala. Fur and clothing both get their texture pass last, worked separately so the two surfaces stay distinct.

Figures often go wrong when they’re painted too large and compete with the animal, so keep the carer noticeably smaller in the frame and positioned low, looking upward. If faces feel daunting, turn the figure’s head three-quarters away so you only need to suggest a profile.

If this is your first time combining an animal and a person in one painting, build the koala to a finished state first, then add the human figure last so you can judge the scale correctly before it’s locked in.

Palette: Warm Grey,Khaki,Ochre,Eucalyptus Green

Move the story outward with a koala and a kangaroo sharing shade under one gum tree, your first scene pairing two different animals. Paint the tree canopy first as a simple rounded shape casting an oval shadow on the ground, then place the koala up in the branches and the kangaroo resting below within that shadow.

Keep the two animals in different textures on purpose, soft dry-brushed fur for the koala above and smoother, slightly sleeker strokes for the kangaroo’s coat below, so the eye reads them as separate species sharing the same cool spot. A simple dusty ochre ground ties both figures together.

The pairing can look disconnected if the shadow doesn’t actually touch both animals, so make sure the cast shadow reaches from the tree trunk out far enough to cover the kangaroo. No warm ochre ground color mixed yet? Raw sienna with a touch of white gets you there quickly.

Look at where your light source sits before adding the shadow shape: keeping the sun high and slightly to one side gives a compact midday shadow, which is exactly the kind of shade two animals would actually share.

Palette: Warm Grey,Raw Sienna,Eucalyptus Green,Ochre

Give the kangaroo a scene of its own with a kangaroo with a joey in its pouch, peeking out mid-hop. Paint the kangaroo’s body first in a strong upright stance, tail planted for balance, then carve a simple pouch shape low on the belly before adding the joey’s small head poking out of it.

Build the kangaroo’s coat in warm sandy grey with smooth confident strokes rather than the fluffier dry-brush texture used for koala fur, since kangaroo coats read sleeker. Keep the joey simple, just a rounded head and two small ears emerging from the pouch opening.

The pouch often disappears if it’s painted the same flat color as the belly, so add a soft shadow line along its upper edge to separate it clearly from the body. If sandy grey feels tricky to mix, start from raw umber and lighten gradually with white until it feels right.

One tip for today: angle the kangaroo’s body slightly forward on bent legs rather than painting it perfectly upright, since a forward lean reads as mid-hop and brings real energy to the pose.

Palette: Sandy Grey,Raw Umber,Titanium White,Ochre

Settle into a quieter mood with a wombat at its burrow, a stout rounded body half emerging from a dark earthy opening. Paint the burrow mouth first as a simple dark oval dug into a sandy bank, then build the wombat’s body as one solid barrel shape pushing out from the opening, front paws planted on the ground.

Keep the wombat’s fur coarser and less fluffy than the koala’s, short confident strokes in warm brown rather than soft dry-brush flicks, since a wombat’s coat reads stockier and denser. A small cluster of dry grass tufts near the burrow entrance finishes the setting.

Wombats can end up looking too flat and round if the legs disappear entirely, so leave a hint of two front paws visible gripping the dirt. If dark brown earth tones feel muddy on your palette, add a touch of burnt sienna rather than more black to keep it warm.

Compare the width of the burrow opening to the wombat’s shoulders before you finish: it should look like a snug fit, since that snugness is what makes the burrow believable as home.

Palette: Burnt Umber,Sandy Ochre,Warm Grey,Dry Grass Yellow

Lighten the mood with a smiling quokka, the famously cheerful little marsupial that’s almost entirely about the face. Paint the rounded head and body first as one soft compact shape, since quokkas are stout and low to the ground rather than long-limbed like a kangaroo.

Build the signature smile early, a simple upward curve of the mouth with two small front teeth just visible, and keep the eyes bright and round rather than narrowed, since that combination is what gives a quokka its cheerful look. Short soft fur strokes finish the body last.

The smile can look odd if it sits too low on the face, so keep the mouth curve roughly in the lower third of the head with the eyes well above it. If your brown feels flat, warm it slightly with a touch of ochre for that sun-bleached quokka coat color.

For a quicker ten-minute version, keep the body as one simple rounded shape with minimal fur strokes; the forty-minute version adds individual whisker lines and softer shading around the cheeks for extra charm.

Palette: Warm Brown,Ochre,Titanium White,Soft Pink

Have some fun with a quokka taking a selfie with a tourist, a scene that plays straight into the real island photo trend. Paint the quokka’s smiling face close to the picture’s edge first, then add a simplified hand holding a phone just at the frame’s corner, angled toward both faces.

Keep the tourist mostly suggested rather than fully painted, a sliver of a smiling face and a sun hat brim is plenty to tell the joke without needing a full portrait. The phone itself can stay a simple flat rectangle with a thin pale highlight along one edge.

This idea can get cluttered fast if you try to paint both faces in full detail, so let the quokka stay the clear star and reduce the human side to a few confident shapes. If painting a phone screen feels fiddly, leave it a plain dark rectangle with one small white glare mark.

If this is your first time cropping a composition, let the quokka’s face sit a little off-center with the phone angled in from one corner, since a tight playful crop sells the selfie idea far better than a centered formal pose.

Palette: Warm Brown,Ochre,Sky Blue,Titanium White

Bring in some birdlife with a laughing kookaburra, perched with its head thrown back mid call. Paint the branch first, then build the kookaburra’s chunky body in warm brown and cream, keeping the head tipped backward and the beak open wide, since that open-beak tilt is what reads instantly as the laughing call.

Layer the wing feathers with short overlapping strokes in a slightly darker brown over the base coat, working from the shoulder down toward the tail so each feather edge overlaps the one below it like roof tiles. The pale cream chest and throat go in last with a few soft dry-brush strokes to keep it from looking flat.

Kookaburras can look stiff if the head sits perfectly level, so commit to a real backward tilt even if it feels exaggerated at first. No dark brown for feather shadows on hand? Mix burnt umber with a touch of blue for a richer, cooler brown.

Look closely at where the light comes from before shading the feathers: a high sun means the top of the head and back catch the brightest highlights, while the underside of the tail stays in soft shadow.

Palette: Burnt Umber,Cream,Payne’s Grey,Sky Blue

Slow the pace down with an echidna on a forest path, a low rounded body covered in soft spines ambling over leaf litter. Paint the body shape first as a wide dome, then block in a base coat of warm brown before the spines go on, since trying to paint spines straight onto bare canvas usually looks thin and scattered.

Build the spines with a fine round brush loaded with cream and warm grey, working in short outward strokes that follow the curve of the dome from the center out toward the edges. A simple pointed snout and tiny eye finish the front, tucked low near the ground.

Spines often end up looking like a flat pattern rather than a three-dimensional coat, so vary their length and let some overlap the body outline slightly rather than lining them up evenly. If a fine brush feels fiddly, the end of a flat brush dragged lightly also makes a decent spine mark.

One tip for today: keep the snout and feet in shadow near the ground plane, since grounding the lowest points of the body in soft shadow is what keeps the echidna from looking like it’s floating above the path.

Palette: Warm Brown,Cream,Warm Grey,Dry Leaf Ochre

Add some movement with a sugar glider mid-glide, wings of skin stretched wide between outstretched limbs against open sky. Paint the sky background first as a soft gradient, then add the glider’s body as a small compact shape with all four limbs pulled outward to stretch the gliding membrane into a visible curved sail on each side.

Keep the membrane semi-transparent looking by thinning your grey paint slightly and letting a touch of the sky color show through at the edges, then build the small face and big dark eyes last since those eyes are what give a sugar glider its character.

This pose goes wrong if the limbs look tucked in rather than stretched, so push them further out from the body than feels natural at first, almost to the edges of the gliding membrane shape. No glazing medium to thin the grey? A touch more water in your acrylic does a similar softening job.

This perspective works best from below, looking up as if the glider is passing overhead, so keep the lightest highlights along the lower edge of the body where sky light would catch it from beneath.

Palette: Warm Grey,Sky Blue,Titanium White,Payne’s Grey

Bring in a bolder character with a Tasmanian devil, stocky and dark with a wide alert stance. Paint the compact body first in deep warm black-brown, then add the lighter band of fur across the chest that’s such a recognizable marking, keeping its edge soft rather than a hard line.

Build the head with small rounded ears and a wide-set jaw, since devils have a notably broad head compared to their body that gives them their tough look. Short dry-brush strokes over the dark coat add texture without losing the overall deep tone.

The dark fur can end up looking like a flat black blob if you skip any variation, so mix two or three near-black browns rather than reaching for pure black from the tube. If you don’t have a true black-brown, mix Payne’s grey with burnt umber for a richer dark tone than black alone gives.

Compare the head width to the body before finishing: keeping the head noticeably broad relative to the shoulders is the detail that makes it read as a devil rather than a generic small dark animal.

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Burnt Umber,Titanium White,Ochre

Change pace with an emu striding through grass, a tall bird best built from the legs up. Paint the long legs first as two confident angled strokes, since the stride comes from the leg angle more than anything else, then build the rounded body and long curved neck up from there.

Layer the shaggy body feathers with loose overlapping dry-brush strokes in warm brown and grey, working from the tail forward, then keep the neck and small head smoother and simpler in a soft blue-grey for contrast against the shaggy body.

Emus can look wobbly if both legs are painted at the same angle, so stagger them clearly, one forward and one back, to show the stride in progress. No dry brush for the shaggy texture? A piece of coarse sponge dabbed and dragged gives a similar broken feather effect.

For a quicker ten-minute version, simplify the body feathers to one textured mass; the forty-minute version separates the feathers into clear tail, wing and back sections with varied stroke direction in each.

Palette: Warm Brown,Warm Grey,Blue Grey,Dry Grass Yellow

Take the marsupial family to the coast with a wallaby on a beach, a scene that’s become something of an Australian postcard image. Paint a simple pale sand ground and soft sky blue sea first, then add the wallaby standing or hopping along the shoreline in warm sandy brown, smaller and slighter than a kangaroo.

Keep the wallaby’s coat smooth with confident strokes rather than fluffy texture, and add a soft reflected highlight along its lower belly to suggest the bright sand bouncing light upward. A thin line of foam where the sea meets sand ties the whole scene together.

The beach setting can swallow the animal if the sand and sea take up too much space, so keep the horizon line low and let the wallaby stand large against a generous stretch of sky. If a true sandy color feels hard to mix, start with raw sienna and lighten gradually with white and a touch of yellow.

One tip for today: paint the wallaby’s shadow as a simple soft blue-grey oval beneath its feet, since that shadow is what plants it convincingly on the sand rather than floating above it.

Palette: Sandy Ochre,Sky Blue,Warm Grey,Titanium White

Give a smaller, rarer creature its moment with a bilby with big ears, a delicate nocturnal animal whose ears take up nearly as much space as its body. Paint the slender body and long pointed snout first in soft silvery grey, then build the oversized ears as two large curved shapes rising well above the head, thin enough at the edge to look almost translucent.

Add a soft pink tint inside each ear with a thin wash, then bring in fine fur texture over the body with a small dry brush, keeping it much softer and finer than a koala’s coat since bilby fur reads silkier. A long thin tail with a dark tuft at the end finishes the shape.

The ears can look stiff and paper-flat if painted with one solid color, so soften their edges with a slightly lighter grey toward the rim where light would pass through thin skin. If a thin wash feels risky straight onto acrylic, test it on scrap canvas first to judge the transparency.

Measure the ear height against the body length before you finalize the pose: letting the ears reach roughly half the bilby’s total body length is what gives this animal its distinctive, slightly comic silhouette.

Palette: Silvery Grey,Soft Pink,Warm Grey,Titanium White

Bring in some drama with a frilled lizard with its frill open, a pose built entirely around one bold defensive gesture. Paint the lizard’s body and head first in a textured warm brown, then add the frill as a large fan shape spreading out behind the head, bold and wide so it fills a noticeable part of the canvas.

Color the frill in warm orange and ochre tones radiating out from the neck, with thin darker lines running outward like spokes to suggest the delicate skin structure stretched taut. Keep the open mouth and alert stance sharp underneath, since the whole pose should feel like a sudden startled display.

The frill can end up looking like a flat painted disc if the radiating lines are too even, so vary their spacing and let a few fade out before reaching the frill’s edge. If orange feels too bright straight from the tube, mix it down slightly with a touch of raw sienna for a more sunbaked tone.

Look at where the light falls on a fanned, semi-translucent shape like this: keep the frill brightest where it catches direct sun near the top and let the lower edge fall into warm shadow for real dimension.

Palette: Warm Orange,Ochre,Warm Brown,Burnt Umber

Keep the smaller creatures coming with a numbat on a log, a striped little marsupial perched on weathered timber. Paint the log first as a simple horizontal shape in warm grey-brown with a few dark knot marks, then add the numbat standing along its length with its back arched slightly and tail held up.

Build the body’s reddish-brown base coat first, then add the signature pale stripes across the back and rump with a fine brush, keeping them slightly uneven in width since real stripes are never perfectly regular. A fine dark line through the eye finishes the distinctive face marking.

Stripes can look like a stuck-on pattern if painted too crisply, so soften their edges slightly with a dry brush once the paint has set. No fine brush for the stripes? The edge of a flat brush turned sideways makes a clean enough stripe mark too.

For the quick ten-minute version, keep four or five simple stripes across the back; the forty-minute version adds the fading stripe pattern down toward the tail and softer tonal shading along the body’s curve.

Palette: Reddish Brown,Cream,Warm Grey,Burnt Umber

Give yourself a showpiece with a lyrebird displaying its tail, fanned wide into its famous lyre shape. Paint the bird’s compact body and head first, then build the tail as the real centerpiece, two long curved outer feathers framing a delicate fan of lacy inner feathers between them.

Work the outer feathers in solid confident strokes of warm brown, then switch to a fine brush for the lacy inner feathers, using thin pale lines over a darker base to suggest their delicate structure without painting every barb. Keep the small body simple so the tail stays the clear focus.

The lacy feathers can turn into a muddy smear if too much detail gets layered wet into wet, so let the dark base coat dry fully before adding the pale linework on top. If a fine brush feels unsteady, a dip pen loaded with thinned acrylic gives cleaner thin lines.

One tip for today: keep the body noticeably smaller and darker than the tail display, since that contrast in scale is exactly what makes the fanned tail feel like a grand, showy gesture.

Palette: Warm Brown,Cream,Burnt Umber,Warm Grey

Bring in a burst of color with a blue fairy wren, a tiny bird whose bright blue plumage makes it one of the most cheerful subjects on this list. Paint the small compact body first in a rich cobalt blue, keeping the shape round and perky with the tail held upright at a jaunty angle, a signature wren pose.

Add a darker blue-black mask around the eye and a touch of warm brown along the wings and back for contrast, then finish with a few short white strokes along the throat for a bright highlight. Keep the perch, a simple thin twig or grass stem, minimal so the blue stays the star.

The blue can look flat if it’s one single tone across the whole body, so vary it slightly, brighter and lighter on the crown, deeper and more violet toward the tail. If cobalt blue isn’t in your kit, mix ultramarine with a touch of white and a whisper of turquoise for a similarly vivid wren blue.

Compare the tail length to the body before you finish: keeping the tail roughly as long as the body and tilted upward is what gives a fairy wren its characteristic perky silhouette.

Palette: Cobalt Blue,Blue Black,Warm Brown,Titanium White

Return to softer fur with a ringtail possum in daylight, caught resting on a branch with its tail curled into a neat spiral. Paint the body first in warm grey-brown, rounder and more compact than a koala’s, then build the long tail as it curls around the branch, ending in a pale tip.

Fur texture follows the usual dry-brush approach, flicked outward from the body in short soft strokes, but spend extra care on the tail’s spiral so it reads as wrapped around the branch rather than just resting beside it. Large dark eyes, set close together, finish the gently curious expression.

The tail is the part most likely to go wrong, looking stiff if painted as a straight shape with a curl just added at the end, so build the whole tail as one continuous curved line from the base before any texture goes on. If your dry brush feels too stiff for the delicate tail fur, switch to a smaller round brush there instead.

Since this scene sits in daylight rather than the usual nocturnal possum setting, keep the lighting bright and warm with soft, short shadows beneath the branch to match a sunny Australian afternoon.

Palette: Warm Grey,Raw Umber,Titanium White,Eucalyptus Green

Bring the wild dog to the coast with a dingo on a beach, standing alert with the sea behind it. Paint the sandy ground and soft blue water first, then build the dingo’s body in warm golden tan, a lean confident stance with ears pricked forward and tail held level.

Layer short smooth strokes for the coat rather than the fluffier koala texture, keeping the chest and lower legs a touch paler than the back and head for a natural coat gradient. A simple cast shadow beneath the paws anchors the dingo firmly on the sand.

Dingoes can end up looking like a generic dog if the proportions are too stocky, so keep the legs long and the body lean, with a narrower waist than a typical pet dog silhouette. If golden tan feels hard to mix, start from yellow ochre and warm it slightly with a touch of burnt sienna.

One tip for today: keep the horizon line low and the sky generous, since a wide open sky behind a single alert dingo gives the whole piece a real sense of coastal space and quiet.

Palette: Golden Tan,Sandy Ochre,Sky Blue,Titanium White

Shift into denser color with a cassowary in a rainforest, a tall striking bird that gives you a chance to paint a richer green backdrop than anywhere else on this list. Paint the layered rainforest greens first, several shades of green blocked in loosely behind where the bird will stand, then build the cassowary’s body in deep blue-black feathers on top once that background is dry.

Add the vivid blue and red neck and head last, since that bright color against the dark feathers and green background is the whole point of this subject. A tall bony casque on top of the head finishes the silhouette, painted as one smooth pale shape.

The bright neck can look flat if painted as one single blue, so blend a touch of violet into the lower neck and keep the upper area closer to turquoise where the light catches it. If true turquoise isn’t in your kit, mix a cool blue with a small amount of green and white.

Compare the height of the bird to the surrounding foliage before finishing: keeping the cassowary tall against only knee-high undergrowth captures its real scale and makes the rainforest setting feel believable.

Palette: Deep Green,Blue Black,Turquoise,Red

Return to the trees with a tree kangaroo, a surprising cousin of the ground kangaroo that climbs rather than hops. Paint a sturdy rainforest branch first, angled diagonally, then build the tree kangaroo’s compact body gripping it with strong curled paws, noticeably stockier through the arms than a ground-dwelling kangaroo.

Use a warm reddish-brown coat with a paler cream belly and face, built with smooth confident strokes rather than fluffy texture, since tree kangaroo fur reads denser and sleeker. A long balancing tail curls down below the branch to finish the pose.

This animal can accidentally end up looking like an ordinary kangaroo if the proportions aren’t adjusted, so keep the limbs shorter and thicker and the body more compact and rounded than the familiar upright hopping silhouette. If reddish-brown feels tricky, mix burnt sienna with a touch of raw umber for a deeper, richer tone.

One tip for today: paint all four limbs gripping the branch rather than dangling, since a tree kangaroo’s climbing grip is the detail that tells this story apart from a kangaroo simply sitting in a tree.

Bring back warm light with a kangaroo at sunrise in the outback, standing tall against a glowing horizon. Paint the sky first as a soft gradient from deep gold near the horizon up into pale lavender higher up, then add the kangaroo mostly in silhouette once that sky has dried.

Keep just a thin rim of warm gold light along the kangaroo’s ears, back and tail to show the low sun behind it, with the rest of the body in a deep warm brown-black silhouette. A few simple silhouetted grass tufts and a distant low horizon line finish the outback feel.

Sunrise scenes lose their glow if the kangaroo gets too many front-facing highlights, so hold back and let the silhouette stay dark except for that thin rim of light. If lavender feels like an odd color to reach for, mix it fresh from a touch of blue, a touch of red and plenty of white.

For the quick ten-minute version, keep the kangaroo as one simple silhouette with a basic rim light; the forty-minute version adds individual grass silhouettes in the foreground and a softer gradient with more subtle color shifts across the sky.

Close the list with a wombat family walking in a line, a gentle group scene that pulls together several of the fur and proportion tricks from earlier ideas. Paint the largest adult wombat first, leading the line in profile, then add two or three smaller versions following behind at a slight stagger so each one is partly visible rather than lined up in a flat row.

Keep the family in the same warm brown coat used for the single wombat earlier, but vary the size clearly from largest to smallest so the line reads as a family rather than identical copies. Short coarse dry-brush strokes finish the fur on each one, worked separately so they stay visually distinct.

Group scenes like this can look repetitive if every wombat faces exactly the same direction and stance, so vary the head angle slightly on each one, one looking ahead, one glancing sideways. If space runs short across the canvas, overlap the smallest wombat slightly behind the middle one rather than shrinking the whole line.

Measure each wombat against the one before it as you go: keeping each new one a touch smaller than the last, and compare its height to the leader before placing it. One concrete tip for today: finish the leading wombat completely before starting the next, so the proportions of each new one have a clear reference to match against.

What to Do Next

Pick one koala pose or one of the sunnier scenes further down the list, set up a canvas board and your warm greys and greens, and work through it start to finish before moving on to the next. Once the fur and light tricks feel familiar, the rest of the list goes faster each time.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of paint works best for a koala painting?

Acrylic paint works best because it dries fast, stays opaque in one layer and lets you build soft fur texture with a dry brush right away. It is also easy to correct mistakes by painting over a dry layer, which suits a beginner working through a quick session.

How do you paint realistic-looking koala fur?

Build fur with a dry, stiff flat or fan brush loaded with slightly thinned paint, then flick outward from the body edge in short strokes. Layer two tones of grey, a base coat and a lighter highlight tone, rather than trying to paint every hair in one pass.

What colors do I need for a koala and Australian animal series?

A warm grey, raw umber, titanium white and eucalyptus green cover most of the koala and marsupial subjects in this list. Add an ochre, a sky blue and a small tube of a bright accent color like orange or cobalt blue for the birds and lizards.

How long does one of these paintings take to finish?

Most of these ideas finish within thirty to sixty minutes once the paint and reference are ready, since each uses simple layered shapes rather than fine detail. Simpler poses, like a sleeping koala, finish faster than scenes with two animals or a background.

Can a beginner really paint a kangaroo or a wombat convincingly?

Yes, because both animals build from a few confident basic shapes, an oval body, simple limbs and a textured coat, rather than precise anatomy. Keeping proportions checked against the reference as you go matters more than painting experience.
