36 Kawaii Sketchbook Ideas With Food Friends on Little Adventures

A kawaii sketchbook is the happiest kind of sketchbook there is, because every page gets its own tiny character having its own tiny day. I love this style for exactly that reason: a dumpling can go for a swim, a strawberry can ride a snail to school, and nobody needs a background more complicated than a leaf or a bowl.

Below you will find 36 original food friends, each on a small adventure of its own, starting simple and building up as you go. Grab your markers and pick whichever one makes you smile first, that is always the right one to start with.

Onigiri Camping Under a Leaf is the easiest character to start with, so it is a good first page for a child and adult to share. Draw the rice triangle first with a nice rounded top, then add the seaweed strip across the bottom like a little belt.

A grown-up can add one big fallen leaf tipped over the onigiri like a tent roof, with a tiny campfire of three orange scribbles beside it. Kids can keep theirs flat with just the leaf laid on top. Color the rice in soft cream and leave the cheeks white before adding blush, so the pink stays soft instead of muddy.

Strawberry Riding a Snail builds nicely on the onigiri because it adds a second shape to balance: the fruit sitting on top of a curled shell. Start with the snail’s spiral shell first, then the simple oval body underneath, and only then perch the strawberry on top so the proportions read correctly.

Keep the strawberry about the same size as the shell, never bigger, or the snail will look like it is being squashed. Children can leave the trail behind the snail blank, while an adult can add a thin wavy line of shimmer dust trailing behind with the white gel pen. That one line makes the whole page feel like it is moving.

Cupcake on a Skateboard asks you to think about proportion before you pick up a marker. Keep the cupcake body about two heads tall if you count the frosting swirl as the head, with the skateboard deck no wider than the cupcake wrapper sitting on top of it.

Draw the wrapper and frosting swirl first, then the skateboard underneath, lining its center directly below the middle of the frosting swirl so the character looks balanced instead of about to tip over. A sprinkle or two flying off the top sells the motion. For a fun pairing afterward, these food doodles in the food doodles beginner ideas work at a similarly playful scale.

Dumpling Family Bathing in Soup turns one character into three, so plan the composition before you outline anything. Draw the soup bowl rim first as a wide curve across the lower third of the page, then place a big dumpling in the center and two smaller ones tucked beside it so the group reads as a family at a glance.

Give each dumpling the same pleat line across the top so they clearly belong together. Kids can color the broth flat yellow, while an adult can add a few wavy steam lines rising above the bowl with a light gray marker.

Taiyaki Fishing From a Pond gives you a chance to practice a light source for the first time in this list. Decide where your light comes from, then keep the top edge of the fish-shaped pastry slightly brighter and the underside a touch darker, which is what makes the rounded body look like it curves instead of lying flat.

Draw the taiyaki sitting at the edge of a round blue pond first, add a tiny fishing rod held in its stub arms, and finish with one small fish peeking out of the water. That single light-to-dark shift on the body is the one trick worth remembering here.

Mochi Siblings on a Picnic Blanket is about getting the edges of the mochi soft and a little squishy looking, which is the texture trick for this one. Press lightly with the marker along the outline and let the color pool slightly thicker at the base of each mochi, so they look like they are gently resting rather than floating.

Draw the checkered blanket first as a simple grid, then place two or three round mochi on top with sleepy half-closed eyes. A scatter of tiny strawberry slices between them finishes the scene without adding much extra drawing.

Boba Cup Riding a Wave is a fun one to time, since the quick version takes about ten minutes: just the cup shape, the straw, and one curling wave beneath it. Draw the cup first, then the wave as a single curved sweep, and finally the tapioca pearls as a row of small dark circles at the bottom.

If you have forty minutes instead, add a tiny splash of droplets around the wave and a second smaller wave behind it for depth. Either version works, so let your time decide how far you go today.

Pancake Stack Sledding Down a Syrup Hill asks you to get the stacking proportion right before anything else. Make each pancake disc slightly smaller than the one below it, with the top pancake no more than two thirds the width of the bottom one, so the stack reads as believable rather than lopsided.

Draw the stack first, then a sloped hill shape made of glossy amber syrup beneath it, as if the whole stack is sliding down. A pat of butter on top with little motion lines behind the stack finishes the adventure.

Watermelon Slice Paddling a Boat is a good one for the usual mistake beginners make with this fruit: forgetting that the seeds need to curve with the slice, not sit in a straight row. Draw the rind edge first as a gentle arc, then place the seeds following that same curve before you add the paddle arms.

Sit the slice inside a simple half-circle boat, add one paddle held in its stub hands, and a few wavy lines beneath for water. Fixing the seed curve halfway through is the one change that makes this fruit look right.

Egg Tart Hot Air Balloon Ride works best on thicker paper, since the fluted crust edge needs several short marker strokes close together and thin paper will buckle under that much ink. Choose a sketchbook with heavier pages before you start this one.

Draw the round basket first, add the egg tart sitting inside it, then build the balloon above from the tart’s own custard color repeated in a bigger dome shape, so the whole thing feels like one connected character. Fine scallops around the crust edge are worth the extra few minutes.

Sushi Roll Surfing a Soy Sauce Wave lets you try the dry brush trick with your marker, dragging a nearly empty nib lightly across the page to suggest the spray of a splashing wave. Draw the round sushi roll first with its spiral of pink and white, then the surfboard beneath it.

Add the dark soy sauce wave curling up at one side, dry-brushing a few streaky marks at the crest so it looks like it is just breaking. That streaky dry-brush edge is the detail that makes the wave feel alive instead of flat.

Donut Family at the Beach is a nice one to vary once you have drawn a few of these characters, since the basic donut shape stays the same no matter the topping. Draw the ring shape first, then let the frosting drip define each donut’s personality: chocolate drip, pink glaze, or a dusting of sugar.

Line up two or three donuts on a striped towel with a tiny sun and a few wave lines behind them. Next time, try the same beach scene with the toppings swapped for a totally different set of expressions.

Ice Cream Cone Climbing a Sprinkle Mountain needs a clear eye level before you draw the mountain, since everything above that line should look slightly smaller and everything below slightly larger to sell the climb. Place the eye level about a third of the way up the page.

Draw the cone character first near the bottom, then build the mountain of stacked sprinkles rising above the eye level, tapering as it goes up. A tiny flag made of a toothpick and paper triangle at the peak finishes the story.

Rice Ball Stargazing on a Hill is about the first three marks, since getting those right sets up the whole page. Put down the hill curve first, then the rice ball sitting on top of it, and only then the handful of stars scattered in the sky above, saving the face for very last once the body sits correctly.

Leaving the face for last keeps you from drawing an expression before you know how much room is left on the round shape. A thin crescent moon beside the stars completes the quiet little scene.

Matcha Cake Slice in a Tiny Garden pairs a green dessert with a green setting, so keep two distinct shades of marker on hand or the whole page will blend together. Use a lighter mint for the cake layers and a deeper leaf green for the garden plants around it.

Draw the wedge-shaped cake slice first, then a few simple round bushes and a small watering can beside it. If you enjoy pairing food with a leafy setting like this, the flower sketchbook ideas for beginners share that same gentle color approach.

Croissant Hiking With a Walking Stick is a good moment to fix the usual mistake with this shape, which is drawing the curved ends too thin and pointy so the pastry looks more like a banana. Keep both tapered ends rounded and a little plump, never sharp.

Draw the curved body first with that rounded taper in mind, then add two tiny stick-arms holding a small twig walking stick, and a simple dirt path curving behind. Checking the taper halfway through saves you from redrawing the whole shape.

Bubble Tea Pearl Having a Bath is a sweet choice for practicing soft rounded edges, since a single tapioca pearl sitting in a teacup of bubbly water is nearly all curves. Draw the teacup first, then the pearl inside it as a simple circle with a happy face, leaving plenty of round bubbles floating around for texture.

Kids can keep the bubbles as plain circles, while an adult can add a thin white gel pen line around each bubble’s edge for shine. That tiny highlight line makes the bubbles look wet and glossy.

Pudding Cup Rowing Through Caramel River is worth trying at both speeds, since the quick ten-minute version is just the cup, two oars, and a flat caramel river beneath it. Draw the dome of pudding first, then the cup, then the river as a single wavy band.

Given forty minutes, add a gentle gradient to the caramel by layering a second lighter marker pass over the darker one, plus a few drip marks along the riverbank. That layered caramel shade is the detail the longer version earns.

Macaron Couple on a Swing introduces a second character paired with the first, so measure before you commit: keep both macarons the same size so neither looks older or more important, and set the swing seat exactly between them. Draw the swing ropes first, hanging from the top of the page, then the seat, then both macarons sitting evenly on it.

A soft puff of pastel filling peeking out from each cookie’s middle adds charm without much extra work. Keep their smiles matching so the pair feels like a true duo.

Dango Skewer Balancing on a Tightrope is a fun test of proportion, since all three dumplings on the stick need to stay exactly the same size or the skewer looks uneven. Draw the thin skewer line first, straight across the page, then place each round dango along it with equal spacing.

Add tiny stub arms out to the sides for balance and a nervous little expression on the middle one. Spacing the three dango evenly before adding any faces is the trick that keeps this whole page looking tidy.

Soft Pretzel Walking a Mustard Dog needs its knot shape drawn with care, since the classic pretzel twist is really three overlapping loops rather than one blob. Sketch the two side loops first, then the center loop crossing over them, before adding any salt dots.

Give the pretzel two little legs and a leash leading to a small mustard-yellow dog shape trotting beside it. Getting that three-loop knot right before the salt dots keeps the shape from turning into a plain circle.

Candy Corn Trio Trick or Treating leans on a light fineliner and thin paper being a poor match, since the three stacked color bands on each candy corn need crisp lines to read clearly. Use a sketchbook built for alcohol markers so the ink does not bleed between bands.

Draw each cone shape first, then divide it into the white tip, orange middle, and yellow base before adding faces and a tiny trick-or-treat bag held between two of them. Crisp band lines are the whole character here, so take your time on those first cuts.

Waffle Square Flying a Kite is about getting the grid pattern to sit correctly on a rounded character, since a flat waffle grid drawn straight across a soft rounded body will look stiff. Curve the grid lines very slightly to follow the character’s rounded edges instead of ruling them perfectly straight.

Draw the waffle body first with that gentle curve in the grid, then a simple diamond kite on a long string trailing up and off the page. The slight curve in the grid lines is what keeps the whole character looking soft rather than boxy.

Fortune Cookie Opening a Treasure Map is a nice spot to try eye level again, this time from above, looking down at the cookie as if you are standing over it. From that high angle the cookie’s fold reads as a wide curve and the little paper slip inside appears almost flat.

Draw the curved cookie shape first from that top-down view, then the paper slip unrolling from the crack, drawn as a dotted treasure map rather than plain fortune text. That high angle is what makes the scene feel like a real adventure moment.

Cinnamon Roll Curled Up by a Campfire asks you to get the spiral right before anything else, since the whole charm of this character lives in that swirl. Start at the center of the roll and work outward in one continuous curved line, keeping the gaps between each ring even.

Once the spiral sits well, add a tiny campfire made of three simple flame shapes beside it and a light glaze drizzle across the top. An even spiral, drawn from the center out, is the one habit worth practicing here.

Popsicle Pair Sailing a Paper Boat pairs two different flavors in one scene, so pick two colors that sit well together, like a soft orange and a pale blue, before you start outlining. Draw the paper boat first as a simple folded triangle shape, then seat both popsicle sticks inside it leaning against each other.

Give the water beneath a few simple wave lines and a couple of tiny splash drops. Choosing your two popsicle colors before any outlining keeps the finished page from fighting itself.

Cheese Wedge Playing Hide and Seek is a good one for the first three marks, since where you place the cheese wedge against its hiding spot decides the whole joke of the picture. Draw a simple curtain or leaf shape first, then the cheese wedge peeking out from behind it, and only then its round holes, saved for last so they do not get lost under the curtain lines.

A single wide eye peeking around the edge finishes the gag. Placing the hiding shape before the cheese is what makes the hide and seek idea actually read.

Gummy Bear Bouncing on a Marshmallow Trampoline plays with a bright transparent color over a soft white one, which alcohol markers handle nicely if you let the white marshmallow layer dry before adding the gummy bear’s color on top. Draw the marshmallow trampoline shape first and let that base color set.

Then add the gummy bear mid-bounce above it, stretched slightly to suggest motion, with a few small star shapes trailing behind. Letting the white layer dry first keeps the bright gummy color from smearing into it.

Bread Loaf Reading Under a Blanket is a quiet, cozy one worth slowing down for, so this time take the forty-minute version even if you are tempted to rush. The quick version is just the loaf and a small book, but the fuller version adds a soft folded blanket draped over its lower half with a few gentle fold lines.

Draw the loaf first, then the book held in its stub arms, and finally the blanket folds last so they settle naturally over the shape already there. The folds always look better added last, once the body underneath is set.

Jelly Cube Bouncing Through Puddles is a chance to use the wobble of a cube shape to its advantage, since jelly should never look perfectly square. Draw each side of the cube with a slightly curved rather than straight line, so the whole shape jiggles even while standing still.

Place a few small round puddles beneath it and a couple of splash droplets flying up from a bounce. Curving every edge of the cube instead of ruling it straight is the one habit that makes jelly read as jelly.

Potato Chip Sailing a Leaf Raft asks for a light touch with your pencil before inking, since the chip’s wavy, ruffled edge is easy to overdo into something spiky instead of soft. Sketch the ruffle lightly first, keeping each wave shallow and rounded, then go over only the best lines in fineliner.

Sit the chip on a folded leaf raft on a simple wavy pond, with a thin twig as a mast. Keeping that ruffled edge shallow in pencil before you commit to ink saves a lot of redrawing.

Honey Pot Bear Climbing a Flower Stem combines a round pot shape with a tall thin stem, so measure the stem at about four times the pot’s height before you draw it, which keeps the climb looking like a real reach upward. Draw the pot first at the base, then the stem rising above it, then the bear-shaped honey character gripping partway up.

A single flower bloom waits at the very top as the goal. That four-to-one height ratio between stem and pot is what sells the sense of distance to climb.

Soup Dumpling Submarine Expedition pushes the soup theme from earlier in a new direction, swapping the bath for a full underwater trip, so vary your approach by giving this dumpling a round porthole window instead of a plain face view. Draw the dumpling’s pleated top first, then a circular porthole on its belly with a tiny fish visible inside it, as if the broth itself is an ocean.

Rice Cracker Knight Guarding a Castle is a nice late addition since it brings in a tiny setting instead of a single prop. Draw a simple round castle tower first, small enough to fit beside the character, then the rice cracker standing in front of it holding a thin skewer like a spear.

Keep the castle no taller than twice the cracker’s own height, so the character still reads as the star of the page rather than getting lost beside the building. A single small flag on the tower finishes the guard post.

Tempura Shrimp Hang Gliding is a fun stretch for perspective, since the character needs to look like it is floating above the page rather than standing on it. Keep the shrimp’s crispy curved body angled slightly downward, as if caught mid-glide, with its little glider wings stretched wide above.

Draw the wings first as a simple wide triangle, then the shrimp hanging beneath them, and finish with a few clouds scattered below to establish the height. Angling the body downward is what convinces the eye that gravity is pulling on it.

Flan Slice Riding a Caramel Carousel brings a few of this list’s smaller tricks together in one page, so take your time on it. Draw the carousel pole first straight down the center, then the round flan slice seated on a small platform partway up, with the caramel drizzle trailing down around the pole like ribbon.

A simple striped tent roof above the carousel, just a few triangle segments, completes the fairground feeling. This is a good one to save for when you want a slightly longer, more satisfying sitting.

Frequently Asked Questions

What paper works best for a kawaii sketchbook with markers?

Pick a sketchbook labeled for alcohol markers or mixed media, since thin printer-style paper lets the ink bleed through and feather at the edges. Thicker marker paper keeps outlines crisp and lets you layer color without the page buckling.

Do I need alcohol markers or will regular markers work?

Regular markers will still make a cute page, but alcohol markers blend more smoothly and give that soft, rounded pastel look this style is known for. If you only have regular markers, go lighter on layering and let the outlines carry more of the character.

How do I make my kawaii characters look consistent across pages?

Keep the same proportions each time: a round or soft-edged body, dot eyes spaced evenly, and a small curved mouth. Reusing that same simple face formula on every character is what ties a whole sketchbook together as one style.

My outlines look shaky, how do I fix that?

Draw the shape lightly in pencil first and only trace the lines you are happy with in fineliner. Going slowly with the pen and keeping your wrist relaxed, rather than rushing the outline, makes a noticeably steadier line.

Can kids really do these ideas alongside an adult?

Yes, each idea has a simple version built from basic rounded shapes that a child can manage, plus one small extra, like a shaded wave or a sparkle trail, that an adult can add afterward. Both versions finish on the same page in one sitting.
