34 Storybook Illustration Ideas of Hollow-Tree Mice, Waistcoated Garden Animals and Midwinter Feasts

9

Storybook illustration is the kind of painting that makes a cup of tea feel necessary before you even start: small rooms lit from within, animals dressed for the weather, pies cooling on windowsills. You are not copying any particular book here, just borrowing that warm, lamplit feeling and putting your own mice and moles and badgers into it with loose watercolor and a fine ink pen.

Below you will find thirty four scenes to paint, moving from quick single-animal moments to busier feasts and gatherings, so you can pick whatever matches the time you have today. Each one tells you what to paint first, where it tends to go wrong, and how to fix it, so you can pick a page and get straight to the water and the color.

Mice in aprons baking berry pies makes a friendly first stop, because the whole scene hangs off one simple shape: the round pie dish on the table. Start with a light pencil line for the table edge and the dish, then drop in a warm oatmeal wash for the tree-root walls before anything else, so the kitchen has a glow behind the figures.

Paint the mice as soft grey-brown pear shapes with small ears and a dot nose, apron strings in berry red, and only add the ink pen once the washes are dry: whiskers, apron ties, a few currants scattered on the table. The usual snag is crowding too many mice in; two is plenty, one rolling pastry and one spooning berries.

If you do not have a small round brush for the pie filling, dab the berries with the tip of a cotton bud dipped in paint instead. Keep the wash loose and a little uneven on the crust, that unevenness reads as warm pastry rather than a mistake.

Finish with one bright spot: a single steam curl in pale grey ink rising off the pie, it sells the whole scene as fresh from the oven.

A mouse family’s hollow-tree home with a round door asks you to think about the tree before the mouse: sketch a tall, lumpy trunk shape first, wider at the base, and let it fill most of the page so the home feels lived in rather than small. Mark the round door and two or three window shapes before you paint anything, so the lights land in the right places.

Wash the bark in soft greys and ochres, leaving the window shapes dry so they stay bright, then once that wash is dry, fill the windows with a warm golden yellow to suggest firelight inside. Ink the bark texture and the door hinges last, keeping the lines loose rather than tracing every knot.

Eye level matters here: paint the tree as if you are standing on the ground looking slightly up, which means the base widens more than the top and the door sits a little above your sightline. That small shift makes the home feel grand rather than flat.

No yellow ochre on hand, warm up any yellow with a touch of burnt sienna for the same lamplit glow. For more tree shapes to borrow from, the tree pencil drawing ideas are worth a look.

Carrying on from that lit window, a tiny mouse kitchen with copper pans hanging over the stove gives you a chance to paint a cosier interior view. Block in the stove and the wall first with a dry brush of burnt sienna dragged sideways, which leaves little gaps of white paper that read as worn wood grain without any extra work.

Paint the hanging pans as simple ovals in a warm orange-brown, leaving a sliver of white paper on one edge of each to suggest the shine of copper, then hang them from the wall with a single ink line once dry. A kettle on the stove and a jar of flour on the shelf fill the rest of the space without cluttering it.

Where this tends to go wrong is making every pan the same size and shape; vary them, two round, one with a long handle, so the row feels collected rather than printed.

If you have no masking fluid to protect the highlight, just paint around it carefully with your brush tip. One tip for today: wet the stove wall fully before adding the pan shadows beneath each pan, that soft shadow grounds them instantly.

Step outside for a squirrel in a blue waistcoat tending lettuces, which moves the mood from kitchen to garden row. Draw the lettuces first as loose, overlapping scallop shapes in a line, since they set the perspective: make the row nearer the bottom of the page larger and the far ones smaller, so the garden reads as going back in space rather than sideways.

Paint the squirrel’s waistcoat in a confident sky blue while the lettuces are still drying nearby, letting a little green bleed softly into the blue where they touch, that soft edge is doing the work of showing the squirrel standing right in the row. His tail gets a dry brush treatment: load the brush lightly, almost out of paint, and drag it upward for fluffy, broken strokes.

Beginners often paint the tail as one solid shape, which flattens it; the dry brush fix above is the simplest rescue if that happens, just glaze dry strokes back over the solid patch once it dries.

No proper dry brush effect without the right brush, blot a damp brush on a paper towel first to get the same broken stroke.

From the garden, head underground for a mole in slippers reading by the fire in his parlour, a quiet scene that rewards a little planning before the brush touches paper. Place the fireplace low and to one side so the mole’s armchair can sit centre page, catching the warm light rather than fighting it for attention.

Paint the fire glow first in overlapping washes of yellow and burnt orange, let it dry completely, then paint the mole’s dark velvet-grey shape sitting against that warm background; the contrast between his cool grey fur and the warm fire does most of the storytelling for you. His round spectacles and the book spine get picked out in ink once everything is dry.

The parlour background can swallow the whole scene if you paint it too dark; keep walls in a muted oatmeal rather than brown so the fire stays the brightest thing in the room.

Working in ten minutes, paint just the mole in his chair with the fire glow behind him; given forty, add shelves of books and a small rug to build out the room. For another cozy underground mood, see the cozy animals illustration ideas.

A family of dormice sharing a harvest feast of nuts and berries makes good use of a round composition: arrange the little diners in a loose circle around a tree-stump table so your eye travels around the page rather than straight across it. Sketch the table and the pile of acorns and berries at its centre before placing any of the dormice.

Paint the food pile first in warm berry reds and ochres while your brush is loaded with rich color, then work outward to the dormice in softer, paler tones so the feast stays the visual centre of the painting. Each dormouse can be a simple rounded shape with a long curling tail added in ink.

If the circle of animals starts to feel stiff and evenly spaced, turn one dormouse slightly sideways or have one reaching for a berry; one broken pose relaxes the whole group.

No berry red in the palette, mix alizarin crimson with a touch of burnt sienna for a deeper, jammier tone that still reads warm.

Palette: Alizarin Crimson,Burnt Sienna,Yellow Ochre,Raw Umber

A badger in spectacles shelving books in his cozy library is a nice chance to practice a tall, narrow composition, since the bookshelves can run the full height of the page. Sketch the shelves first as a simple grid, then vary the books inside each row, some tall, some leaning, so the shelf reads as full rather than a repeated pattern.

Paint the badger’s black and white striped head in two quick strokes, white left dry, black painted wet, and let the stripe edges stay a little soft rather than crisp; a hard, ruled stripe looks more like face paint than fur. His waistcoat in moss green anchors him against all that warm wood.

The shelves can flatten the whole scene if every book is the same brown; mix in a dusty sky blue or berry red spine here and there, three or four accent colors scattered through the row is enough.

If you do not have a ruler for straight shelf lines, fold a strip of paper to use as an edge instead. Add one ladder leaning against the shelf for next time, and the same library works as a different angle entirely.

A duck in a bonnet and shawl waddling along a farm lane is a good study in motion with very few shapes. Paint the duck’s body as one plump oval tilted slightly forward, since that tilt alone suggests the waddle before you add a single leg. Keep the bonnet a simple curved triangle shape in soft berry red, tied with a thin ink ribbon under the beak.

Lay the lane in loose, horizontal strokes of oatmeal and pale green, pulling the brush sideways so the texture suggests packed dirt and grass edges without any detailed brushwork. Let the duck’s shawl wash bleed very slightly into the background wash while both are still damp, which softens her edge into the lane rather than cutting her out of it.

If the duck ends up looking static, angle one webbed foot forward and slightly raised, caught mid-step.

No berry red at hand for the bonnet, a soft dusty pink works just as well and keeps the whole palette gentler. For more duck poses to try, the duck painting ideas cover plenty of ground.

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Alizarin Crimson,Sap Green,Naples Yellow

A toad in a tweed jacket proudly showing off his little boat lets you paint water and pride in the same small scene. Start with the boat, a simple curved hull shape sitting on a flat horizon line of river, then place the toad standing beside it with one arm gesturing outward, chest puffed a little.

Paint the tweed jacket in mixed strokes of ochre and muted green side by side without fully blending them, which gives a flecked, woven look that reads as tweed from a short distance. The boat gets a warm wood wash, and once dry, a few confident ink lines for planks and a trim edge.

Reflections in the water are where this scene often falls apart; keep the toad’s reflection just a soft smudge of his jacket color pulled straight down with a damp brush, nothing detailed, and it will read correctly.

If you want the water livelier, flick a loaded brush gently over the surface for a few ripple marks once the base wash is dry.

Palette: Yellow Ochre,Sap Green,Sky Blue,Burnt Sienna

Following that riverbank, a water vole rowing a little boat along a willowy river takes the water further and adds motion. Sketch the boat at a gentle diagonal across the page rather than flat and level, that single tilt gives the sense of gliding forward through the current.

Paint the willow branches hanging in from the top corner first in long, trailing strokes of sap green pulled downward, letting some strokes run right off the edge of the page; this framing move pulls the eye straight to the boat below. The water takes a loose wash of sky blue with a few horizontal streaks of darker blue dragged through while still wet for movement.

Keep the vole small and simple, a round brown shape with tiny paws gripping the oars, added in ink once the boat and water are dry so his details do not bleed into the wash.

No willow reference handy, any drooping tree branch works for the trailing green shapes, the drape is what matters, not the species. The willow tree painting ideas has more ways to paint those trailing branches.

Palette: Sap Green,Sky Blue,Burnt Sienna,Payne’s Grey

A mouse wedding under a canopy of wild roses with a cricket fiddler is one of the busier scenes on this list, so build it in clear layers rather than all at once. Lay in the rose canopy first across the top third of the page in loose pink and white dabs, then let that dry completely before anything underneath is painted, so the flowers stay soft and the figures below stay crisp.

Paint the bride and groom mice as the visual centre, slightly larger than any other figure in the scene, with simple white and grey shapes for their wedding clothes. The cricket fiddler can sit off to one side, body painted in thin green washes with ink legs and a tiny fiddle added last.

With several figures in one scene, size is your main proportion tool: keep the couple the largest, guests medium, and the fiddler smallest, which sorts the composition instantly without any other planning.

If wild roses feel fiddly, simplify them to five-petal dots in berry pink with a yellow centre dot, repeated loosely rather than drawn individually.

Palette: Alizarin Crimson,Sap Green,Naples Yellow,Payne’s Grey

After all that wedding finery, a mouse hanging tiny laundry between tall grass stalks is a smaller, quieter breather. Paint the grass stalks first as a loose row of tall, slightly curved vertical strokes in two shades of green, leaving gaps of white paper between them for the laundry line to cross through.

The hung clothes, a tiny shirt, a sock, a handkerchief, can each be two or three brush strokes in soft color, berry red, sky blue, oatmeal, pegged on with a single ink line for the line itself and small dot pegs. Keep the mouse small at the base of the scene, reaching up on tiptoe.

This one goes wrong if the grass is painted too evenly, like a fence; vary the height and lean of each stalk so it reads as a real patch of grass rather than a pattern.

No clothesline rope at hand to reference, a single confident ink line drawn freehand, slightly sagging in the middle, reads correctly without any other guide.

Palette: Sap Green,Sky Blue,Alizarin Crimson,Naples Yellow

A pig in a bonnet carrying a basket down the hill to market brings in a little landscape alongside the character. Sketch the hill first as a gentle curving line sloping from upper left to lower right, and place the pig partway down it rather than at the very bottom, so there is a clear sense of distance still to travel.

Paint the pig’s body in a warm pink wash while the hillside green is still drying just below her, letting the two colors meet softly at her feet. The basket on her arm gets filled with small loose dabs of color, oranges, reds, greens, to suggest vegetables without painting each one individually.

Keep her bonnet ribbon trailing slightly in the wind with one curved ink line, that single detail does more for the sense of a breezy hillside than any amount of extra shading would.

If pink paint runs too orange on your particular paper, cool it down with a tiny touch of grey or blue mixed in before it touches the page.

Palette: Alizarin Crimson,Sap Green,Naples Yellow,Burnt Sienna

A mouse tailor stitching a waistcoat by candlelight turns the light source into the whole point of the painting. Place the candle slightly off centre and paint its glow first, a soft radiating circle of warm yellow fading into the surrounding dark, before any other shape goes down, since everything else needs to sit inside that glow correctly.

Paint the mouse tailor in shadow-side greys where he sits away from the candle, and warmer ochre tones on the side facing the light; that single warm-to-cool shift across his body is what makes the candlelight believable. The waistcoat fabric on his lap can be a bold patch of berry red or sky blue, since it is meant to catch the eye as the brightest color in the scene besides the flame.

Candlelit scenes often end up too evenly lit all over; keep the corners of the page notably darker than the centre to hold the glow in place.

No yellow ochre for the candle glow, a mix of yellow and a touch of orange gives the same warm pool of light.

Palette: Naples Yellow,Payne’s Grey,Alizarin Crimson,Burnt Sienna

A frog in a mackintosh and galoshes fishing from a lily pad moves back out to the water for a brighter, cooler scene. Paint the lily pad first as a single large flat green oval with a notch cut out of one side, then let the frog sit right on its edge, feet slightly overlapping the water so he looks balanced rather than floating above it.

His mackintosh gets a confident flat wash of yellow, since the fabric should look glossy and smooth rather than textured; add the shine with one thin streak of white paper left dry down the front, or lifted gently with a damp brush before the wash fully dries. The fishing line can be a single faint pencil line under the ink so it stays thin and straight.

Lily pads often end up looking too perfectly round and graphic; soften the edge with little scallops and one or two water droplet shapes left as dry white paper for sparkle.

No proper lifting brush for that shine, a crumpled tissue dabbed onto the wet paint pulls color back out just as well.

Palette: Naples Yellow,Sap Green,Sky Blue,Payne’s Grey

A mouse family picnicking on a tree stump with acorn cups is a relaxed, flat-topped composition, good for practicing a simple overhead-ish view. Paint the stump top as a wide oval first, textured with a few dry brush rings for the tree growth pattern, and treat it as your tablecloth for everything else.

Lay out the acorn cups and tiny food items across the stump in a loose, slightly scattered arrangement rather than a neat grid, since real picnics never line up perfectly. Each mouse sits around the edge, painted smaller than the stump itself so the food stays the visual anchor of the page.

The scene flattens if every mouse faces forward; turn at least one in profile, reaching for food or looking at another mouse, to give the group some life.

If you do not have a fine brush for the acorn cup details, the tip of a cocktail stick dipped in paint makes a good small dot or line. For more picnic and outdoor animal ideas, see the cute painting ideas.

Palette: Burnt Sienna,Raw Umber,Alizarin Crimson,Sap Green

Mice in acorn-cap hats skating on a frozen puddle brings in cold weather and a new kind of ground to paint. Lay the frozen puddle first as a pale blue-grey oval with a few jagged white cracks left dry across its surface, which immediately reads as ice without any further work.

Paint each skating mouse mid-glide, one leg trailing back, arms slightly out for balance, and keep their acorn-cap hats as small textured dabs of brown dry-brushed over a round base shape. Scattering the mice at different points on the ice, rather than lined up, helps the eye move around the puddle naturally.

Ice scenes often read flat if the whole pond is one solid blue; vary the wash with patches of slightly darker blue-grey pooling at the edges while still wet, which suggests thickness and depth.

No proper grey-blue in your set, mix sky blue with a touch of Payne’s grey for a convincing icy tone.

Palette: Sky Blue,Payne’s Grey,Burnt Sienna,Alizarin Crimson

A field mouse napping in a walnut shell cradle is a small, tender subject that suits a tight, close composition. Draw the walnut shell large, filling most of the page, its ridged surface suggested with a few curved dry brush strokes rather than every groove traced individually.

Paint the sleeping mouse curled inside in soft pinkish-grey, tucked small enough that the shell clearly cradles her, with a tiny blanket of leaf or moss green draped over for warmth. Keep her face mostly hidden, just a closed eye line and the curve of an ear, which reads as peaceful sleep far better than a fully visible face would.

The shell can look like a plain bowl if you are not careful; keep its rim uneven and slightly rough at the broken edge rather than a smooth curve, that roughness is what makes it read as a real walnut.

If dry brush strokes feel unfamiliar, practice the ridge texture on a scrap piece of paper first before committing to the final shell.

Palette: Burnt Sienna,Raw Umber,Sap Green,Payne’s Grey

A squirrel’s attic storeroom stacked with jars of jam lets you practice repeating shapes without them feeling mechanical. Sketch the shelving first as a loose wooden frame, then paint rows of jam jars at slightly different heights and tilts rather than in a perfectly even grid, which keeps the storeroom feeling stocked rather than stamped.

Each jar gets a flat wash of berry red or amber for the jam showing through glass, with a thin strip of white paper left along one edge for the glass shine, and a small circle of oatmeal or brown for the lid painted once the jar color is dry. The squirrel can be tucked to one side, reaching up toward a high shelf.

Slanted attic ceilings are worth suggesting with one or two diagonal roof lines in ink at the top corners, which instantly places the whole scene up under the eaves rather than in an ordinary room.

No masking fluid for the jar shine, simply paint around a thin strip of dry paper with your brush instead.

You Will Need

• masking fluid (optional)

Palette: Alizarin Crimson,Yellow Ochre,Naples Yellow,Raw Umber

A mole poking his nose up into a garden full of spring sunshine turns the usual underground view upside down, in a nice way. Paint the garden above ground first, loose patches of green grass and a scatter of small colorful flowers, then leave a gap of bare dirt where the mole’s little mound and nose will emerge.

His pink nose and small front paws pushing up through the soil are the only parts of him visible, so keep the dirt mound textured with dry brush strokes of raw umber while the nose itself stays smooth and bright pink by contrast.

Spring sunshine is really about warm light direction; keep one side of every flower and leaf slightly brighter, as if the sun sits just off the top corner of the page, and the whole garden will feel lit rather than flat.

If your flowers start looking too uniform, vary their size and tilt the stems slightly in different directions, real gardens are never that orderly.

Palette: Sap Green,Alizarin Crimson,Raw Umber,Naples Yellow

A mouse grandmother rocking by the hearth knitting a scarf slows the pace right down, a good quiet scene for a slower afternoon. Paint the rocking chair first at a gentle backward tilt, that single angle suggests mid-rock far better than a straight, upright chair would.

Her shawl and the long scarf trailing from her knitting needles can share one soft color family, oatmeal and berry red worked wet into wet so they blend gently at the edges, giving the whole lap area a cozy, knitted texture without painting individual stitches. The fire glow behind her gets the same warm treatment used in other hearth scenes on this list.

Knitting needles and yarn strands are easy to overwork; two or three confident ink lines for the needles and a single looping line for trailing yarn is enough, more than that starts looking tangled.

No berry red handy for the scarf, a dusty rose or warm terracotta reads just as cozy against the firelight.

Palette: Alizarin Crimson,Naples Yellow,Payne’s Grey,Burnt Sienna

An owl schoolmaster teaching a row of little mice under an oak brings a wider cast into one scene, so plan the composition before painting a single figure. Sketch the oak tree first as a broad canopy taking up the top half of the page, giving shade and shelter to everyone standing below it.

Paint the owl larger and positioned slightly above the row of mice, a small platform of roots or a low branch works well, so he naturally reads as the teacher without needing any obvious prop. The row of mice can repeat a simple seated shape with small variations in color only, berry red, sky blue, oatmeal, so they read as a group without becoming identical copies.

With this many figures, keep every mouse the same size except perhaps one fidgeting slightly out of line; that one break in uniformity keeps the row from looking stamped out.

If the oak canopy feels like too much detail, simplify it to three or four overlapping cloud-like green shapes rather than individual leaves.

Palette: Sap Green,Burnt Sienna,Payne’s Grey,Naples Yellow

Mice pulling a little cart of blackberries home at dusk shifts the light to evening, which changes the whole palette toward deeper, cooler tones. Paint the sky first across the top third of the page in a gradient from soft orange near the horizon up into a dusky blue-purple above, blending the two wet into wet before anything else goes down.

The cart wheels and the mice pulling it stay in silhouette-dark tones against that glowing sky, while the blackberries themselves get small, dense dabs of deep purple with tiny highlight dots of white paper left dry, since those sparks of light are what make dusk scenes feel believable.

Keep the ground beneath the cart simple and dark, a loose wash of deep green-brown, so nothing competes with the sky for attention; this is a scene about the light, not the dirt.

No deep purple in your set, mix alizarin crimson with a touch of Payne’s grey for a convincing blackberry tone.

Palette: Burnt Orange,Payne’s Grey,Alizarin Crimson,Sap Green

A dormouse curled asleep in a nest of thistledown for winter is a soft, textural subject that rewards a gentle touch. Paint the thistledown nest first with a very wet, pale wash of grey and white, letting the edges stay fuzzy and uneven rather than contained, since that softness is the whole character of thistledown.

Once that wash is mostly dry, add a few flicked, feathery lines in a slightly darker grey with a nearly dry brush to suggest the wispy texture without overworking it. The dormouse curls into the centre as a single warm golden-brown comma shape, tail wrapped around, nose tucked in, kept simple against all that soft white texture.

It is easy to overdo the flicked texture until the nest looks scribbled; stop as soon as it reads as soft and fluffy from arm’s length, more marks rarely help after that point.

If you do not have a dry old brush for the flicking, an almost-empty brush wiped nearly clean on a paper towel works the same way.

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Burnt Sienna,Naples Yellow,Raw Umber

A badger and a mole sharing tea at a table made from a root pairs nicely with the earlier library and parlour scenes, so if you have painted either already this one will feel familiar. Draw the root table first, a gnarled, uneven surface rather than a flat round top, and let its twisting lines set the mood for the whole scene.

Paint the badger’s black and white striped head and the mole’s smooth dark grey velvet side by side, contrasting textures that read clearly even from a distance: crisp stripes next to soft solid grey. The teapot and cups between them get a small bright wash of sky blue or berry red, since they are the one domestic detail that ties the whole table together.

Steam rising from the teapot is an easy, satisfying final touch, one or two loose curling ink lines above the spout, added only once the paint is fully dry so the lines stay crisp.

No proper root shape to reference, any gnarled branch or old fence post works as a stand-in for the twisting table legs.

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Sky Blue,Burnt Sienna,Alizarin Crimson

A mouse postman delivering a sealed acorn parcel to a burrow door adds a small sense of story to the page: someone is about to open a door. Paint the burrow door first, round and wooden with a tiny brass-colored handle, set into a mound of dirt and grass, since this is the destination everything else in the scene points toward.

The postman mouse approaches from one side, satchel strap painted in a confident diagonal line across his chest, the acorn parcel itself a rounded cap shape with a wax-seal dot of berry red painted once the rest is dry. Keep his posture slightly leaning forward, mid-step, to suggest arrival rather than standing still.

A flat, front-on door can look like a target rather than an entrance; angle it slightly and let the mound curve around one side so it feels like it is set into real ground.

If you have no small enough brush for the wax seal dot, the end of a brush handle dipped in paint makes a neat round dot.

Palette: Burnt Sienna,Alizarin Crimson,Sap Green,Raw Umber

A cricket fiddler playing for dancing mice on midsummer night is a lively companion to the earlier wedding scene, built the same way but at night under starlight instead of under roses. Paint the night sky first across the top of the page in deep blue-purple, dotting in a few small stars with the tip of a dry brush or a flick of white gouache once the wash is dry.

The cricket fiddler takes centre stage, thin green legs and a tiny fiddle sketched in ink after a light green body wash, with the dancing mice arranged in loose pairs around him, each pair angled slightly differently to suggest movement rather than a static line-up.

Night scenes lose their mood if the ground is painted as bright as daytime grass; keep the grass in deep, cool greens with only a touch of warm lantern-light yellow where any dancers might be lit from below.

No white gouache for stars, a fine white gel pen flicked on after everything is dry gives the same small sparkle.

You Will Need

• white gel pen or white gouache for stars

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Sap Green,Naples Yellow,Sky Blue

A mouse family on a ladder gathering elderflowers takes the garden theme upward, so plan your vertical space before painting. Sketch the ladder first leaning at a clear diagonal against the elder bush, since that lean gives the whole scene its sense of height and reach.

Paint the elderflower clusters as loose clouds of tiny white dots left as dry paper against a soft green wash background, rather than painting each flower individually, which keeps the texture light and airy. The mice climb at different rungs, one near the top reaching up, one at the base holding a basket, their sizes shrinking slightly as they go higher to reinforce the sense of distance up the ladder.

It is tempting to paint every flower cluster the same density; thin some areas out and leave others fuller so the bush feels like it is actually growing rather than evenly patterned.

If you do not have masking fluid for the white flower dots, simply paint the green background around small dot-shaped gaps instead.

You Will Need

• masking fluid (optional)

Palette: Sap Green,Naples Yellow,Burnt Sienna,Payne’s Grey

A tree-root pantry filled with cheeses, honey pots and apples gives you a satisfying still life to paint, tucked into the cozy underground setting the rest of this list has built. Arrange the shelves first in a loose, slightly uneven grid, since real root-carved shelves would never be perfectly square, then sketch rounds of cheese, pots, and apples across them before any paint goes down.

Paint the honey pots in a warm golden wash, leaving a thin white highlight down one side for shine, and the cheese wedges in pale yellow with tiny ink dots for holes added once dry. Apples get a quick two-tone wash, red fading into green, painted wet into wet for a natural gradient.

This scene can become visually noisy fast with so many small objects; group similar items together, cheeses on one shelf, honey on another, rather than scattering every type across every shelf.

No gold or honey tone mixed already, warm yellow ochre with a touch of burnt sienna gets you there quickly.

Palette: Naples Yellow,Yellow Ochre,Alizarin Crimson,Sap Green

A young mouse sneaking a fresh tart from the kitchen windowsill adds a little mischief to the cozy mood, a nice contrast after all that steady baking and shelving earlier in the list. Paint the windowsill first as a simple ledge with a checked curtain just visible behind, the tart sitting on it with a glossy red berry filling wash applied while the pastry edge is left pale and dry.

The young mouse gets caught mid-reach, one paw already touching the tart, body leaning forward and slightly off balance, that lean is what sells the sneaking rather than simply standing nearby. Keep his expression simple, just a slightly raised eyebrow line and a small round eye, rather than an elaborate face.

If the composition feels static, tilt the tart very slightly as though it has just been nudged, a small detail that suggests the moment is already in motion.

No checked fabric pattern pen, a few evenly spaced criss-cross ink lines on the curtain gives the same gingham suggestion without fuss.

Palette: Alizarin Crimson,Naples Yellow,Sky Blue,Burnt Sienna

A duck family in their Sunday best walking to the village church moves the scene outdoors into a small procession. Line the ducks up in a gentle diagonal across the page rather than a straight horizontal row, since a diagonal naturally leads the eye from the front duck back toward the church in the distance.

Paint the parents larger with simple bonnets and small jackets, the ducklings smaller behind them in matching but plainer colors, which reads clearly as a family group without needing any other explanation. The church itself can sit small in the background, just a simple steeple shape and a pale wall, kept loose so it does not compete with the ducks in front.

Groups like this often end up facing identically forward; turn one small duckling’s head slightly to look back or sideways, a tiny break that makes the whole line feel more like a real walk and less like a parade formation.

No steeple reference needed, a simple triangle roof with a small vertical line on top reads as a church from a distance.

Palette: Alizarin Crimson,Naples Yellow,Payne’s Grey,Sky Blue

A mouse with a lantern walking through snowy tree roots at night brings winter and a single warm light source together. Paint the night background first, deep cool blues and greys across the whole page, and let it dry fully before adding anything, since the lantern glow needs a dark base to shine against.

The lantern itself gets painted as a small warm yellow glow with a tiny dark frame added in ink once dry, and its light should visibly touch the snow and tree roots nearest the mouse with a soft yellow wash blended into the cool blue ground. Snow on the roots can be left as untouched white paper, edged with a thin line of pale blue shadow to give it shape.

The scene loses its magic if the glow spreads too far; keep the warm light pooling close around the lantern and let it fade to cool blue within a short distance, real small lanterns do not light up a whole scene.

No yellow gouache for a brighter glow, layering two light washes of yellow watercolor gets a similarly warm pool of light.

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Sky Blue,Naples Yellow,Raw Umber

A mole and a mouse sledging down a hill on a big leaf is a fun, dynamic scene to finish the winter stretch of this list on. Sketch the hill as a strong diagonal sweep first, then place the leaf-sledge angled along that same slope, tipped slightly at the front as though it is about to catch air.

Paint both animals leaning back together, arms or paws raised, their fur painted quickly and loosely to suggest speed rather than careful detail; a touch of dry brush streaking behind them along the direction of travel adds to that sense of motion. The leaf itself takes a warm autumn-brown wash even against the snow, since that contrast is part of the charm.

If the pair look like they are simply sitting rather than sliding, add a small spray of white paper left dry, or flicked gouache, kicking up behind the leaf’s back edge.

No gouache for the snow spray, flick clean water onto a still-damp white area and dab gently with a tissue for a similar light burst.

You Will Need

• white gouache for snow spray (optional)

Palette: Sky Blue,Burnt Sienna,Payne’s Grey,Raw Umber

Animals in waistcoats around a long table for a midwinter feast makes a fitting finish, pulling together many of the characters you may have already painted elsewhere on this list. Sketch the table first as a long horizontal shape running nearly edge to edge across the page, since that length is what gives the feast its generous, gathered feeling.

Paint the food down the centre first in warm, rich colors, roasted vegetables, a pie, jugs and jars, then work outward to the animals seated around it, keeping each one in a different waistcoat color, berry red, sky blue, moss green, so the row reads as varied rather than uniform. Candlelight washed in soft yellow along the table ties the warm colors together.

With a long table and several figures, resist the pull to detail every single guest equally; paint two or three in fuller color and detail near the centre and let the ones toward the edges stay simpler and looser, which naturally draws the eye inward.

No long table reference, any photograph of a dinner table from a slight angle works fine as a stand-in for the perspective. For more feast and gathering ideas across the seasons, the Christmas drawing ideas has a cozy, related mood worth a look.

Pick one idea that matches the mood you are in today, a quiet hearth scene if you want something gentle, or the midwinter feast if you want to stretch yourself a little further. Start with a half sheet of cold press paper, sketch the main shape lightly in pencil, and let the first wash set the whole scene’s light before anything else goes down.

Frequently Asked Questions

What paper works best for storybook illustration in watercolor?

Cold press watercolor paper around 140lb works best, since it holds soft washes well while still taking fine ink line detail cleanly once the paint has dried.

Do I need to draw animals well to paint storybook illustration scenes?

No, these scenes rely on simple rounded shapes and small character touches like a waistcoat or bonnet rather than realistic anatomy, so a loose, friendly hand suits the style better than precise drawing.

Should I paint the ink details or the watercolor first?

Paint the watercolor washes first and let them dry fully before adding ink linework, since wet ink will bleed into damp paint and lose its crisp, fine quality.

How do I make these scenes look cozy rather than flat?

Keep one warm light source, firelight, a lantern or candle glow, consistent throughout each scene, and let it fade into cooler shadow at the edges rather than lighting everything evenly.

What if I only have a basic watercolor set with few colors?

Mix your own warm browns, berry reds and moss greens from a basic set of primary colors plus one earth tone, since the cozy palette this style needs comes from mixing, not from owning every shade.
