36 Valentines Illustration Ideas of Love Letters, Flower Stalls and Cherry Red Sweets

7

Every good valentines illustration starts as a small, specific moment rather than a heart shape on its own: a girl sealing an envelope, a florist wrapping peonies, a cat swatting at a paper garland. That editorial print look, flat gouache shapes, crisp edges, cherry red and chocolate brown on cream, turns the smallest scene into something you would actually hang on a wall.

Below are 36 scenes to paint, ordered from the simplest still life to the fuller street scenes with figures and snow. Pick whichever one matches your mood tonight, mix your reds ahead of time, and you will have a finished piece before the paint dries on your palette.

Start with the postbox, since it anchors this whole valentines illustration and gives you a shape to build the girl against. Block in the cherry red body as one flat silhouette first, then cut the slot and the rounded top with a slightly darker red mixed from a touch of chocolate brown, keeping every edge crisp rather than painted wet into wet.

Paint the girl’s coat in the same cherry red family so she reads as part of the scene, then switch to chocolate brown for her hair and boots and a pale pink for her scarf. Measure her against the postbox before you commit: her shoulder should sit roughly level with the slot, which keeps the proportions believable even with flat shapes.

Save the white envelope for last, painted in cream with a thin red edge, and let it overlap the slot so her hand looks mid motion. If the red postbox and the red coat start to merge into one shape, separate them with a thin cream outline where they touch.

Finish by flicking a few tiny snow dots in white gouache around her boots with the tip of a dry brush.

A flower stall gives you a reason to repeat one shape, the tulip, many times without it feeling fussy. Sketch the stall’s awning and wooden frame first in chocolate brown, keep the lines straight and a little geometric to match the editorial print look, then paint the metal buckets in flat cream with a thin outline.

Build each tulip bucket as a cluster of simple closed tulip shapes in cherry red, painted wet on dry so every petal stays a clean separate shape rather than bleeding together. Vary the height of a few stems so the buckets do not look like a stamped pattern, which is the easiest way this subject goes flat and lifeless.

Add pale pink to one bucket only so the eye has a place to land before it reads cherry red everywhere. This also pairs well with the florist scenes elsewhere on the page, and if you enjoy this kind of storefront, the market scene painting ideas list has more stalls to try next.

Keep the background a flat cream so the red buckets do the work.

Palette: Cherry Red,Chocolate Brown,Pale Pink,Cream

If straight awning lines feel shaky freehand, lay a strip of tape along the edge, paint up to it, and peel it back once dry for a crisp line.

Move from the street into a close, quiet still life: a little girl sorting candy conversation hearts by color on a table in front of her. Block in her figure first as a simple seated silhouette in pale pink and chocolate brown, then leave the table empty until she is dry.

Paint the hearts as small flat ovals in clusters, cherry red in one pile, pale pink in another, cream in a third, keeping every heart the same size so the sorting idea reads clearly. This is a good subject for practicing scale: hold your brush beside one painted heart before you paint the next so they stay consistent rather than growing larger across the page.

If flat ovals feel too plain, press a tiny indent into a few with the brush handle while the paint is still wet, then paint a thin chocolate brown line across each to suggest the printed word without actually lettering it.

Keep her dress a single flat color so the many small hearts stay the star of the piece.

After all that figure work, give yourself a pure still life: cherries spilling from a paper bag across a marble counter. Paint the counter first as a flat cream shape with a few thin grey-brown veins dragged in with a dry brush, then let it dry completely before anything sits on top of it.

Build the paper bag in chocolate brown with a slightly darker fold line down one side, torn open at an angle so the cherries can tumble out believably. Paint each cherry as a simple circle in cherry red, slightly overlapping the next, with one tiny cream highlight dot left unpainted or added last in white gouache to catch the light.

If your circles start looking uneven, paint the row closest to the bag first and let each new cherry nudge in beside the last rather than trying to place them all from memory. A toothpick dipped in brown works well for the thin stems if a brush feels too thick.

Finish with two stems crossed over each other for a natural, just-spilled look.

You Will Need

• toothpick for thin cherry stems

Bring the mood indoors with a woman in a burgundy cardigan reading a love letter by the window, a quieter scene that leans on light rather than busy detail. Paint the window frame and wall first in flat cream and chocolate brown, keeping the panes simple rectangles, then decide where the light comes from before you touch the figure.

If the light falls from the window on her left, keep her cardigan a flat, slightly lighter burgundy on that side and a deeper mix of burgundy with chocolate brown on the shadow side, since even flat gouache shapes read as lit when you split a color into just two values. Paint the letter last in cream with a few thin red lines suggesting handwriting, never actual words.

This two-value trick carries into most of the figures across this list, so it is worth practicing here first. If a second brown feels fussy to mix, a single wash of chocolate brown thinned with a touch of water over half the cardigan gives the same effect.

Keep her hair a flat dark shape so her face stays the focal point.

Palette: Burgundy,Chocolate Brown,Cream,Soft Pink

Stay in a shop setting but switch to a wider still life: a pink candy shop counter lined with jars of cherry sweets. Paint the counter as one long flat pink shape first, then divide it into a row of jar outlines in cream with thin chocolate brown lids, keeping the jars evenly spaced like a shelf you would actually shop from.

Fill each jar with small cherry red shapes, round candies in some, striped sticks in others, so the row has rhythm rather than repeating the same jar six times. Leave a thin cream highlight down the curved side of every jar to suggest glass without painting reflections in detail.

The easiest mistake here is painting the jars too large for the counter, so sketch the row lightly in pencil first and count how many jars actually fit before you commit to paint. A ruler helps keep the counter edge straight if your hand is not steady with a brush.

Add one small chocolate brown price tag on a single jar for a nice editorial touch.

You Will Need

• ruler for counter edge

Palette: Pink,Cherry Red,Cream,Chocolate Brown

Carry the shop window idea forward with a girl peering into a chocolate shop window full of truffle boxes, a good subject for practicing how a pane of glass changes what you paint. Block in the girl’s silhouette first in cherry red coat and chocolate brown hair, facing the glass rather than the viewer, since her back tells the story here.

Paint the window itself as a flat pale blue-grey rectangle before the display inside it, then layer rows of small square truffle boxes in cream and chocolate brown on top, slightly dimmed compared to her coat to suggest they sit behind glass. A thin diagonal streak of white gouache dragged lightly across the pane reads instantly as a reflection.

If the boxes start looking too uniform, vary two or three lids to pale pink so the display has a little rhythm. This pairs nicely with the candy shop idea earlier in this list if you want a matching pair for a gallery wall.

Keep her coat the brightest shape in the whole piece so she stays the focal point against the muted window.

Palette: Cherry Red,Chocolate Brown,Pale Pink,Blue Grey

Bring in some movement with a cat batting at a paper heart garland strung across a bookshelf. Paint the bookshelf first as flat chocolate brown rectangles filled with a row of books in cream, pink and red spines, kept simple and rectangular so they read instantly without detail.

String the garland across the top in a loose cream line, then paint four or five small heart shapes hanging from it in cherry red and pale pink, spaced unevenly so one looks knocked off balance by the cat’s paw. Paint the cat last in a flat chocolate brown or cream silhouette, reaching up on its back legs, since this gives the whole scene its sense of motion.

If the cat’s pose looks stiff, study a photo of a cat stretching upward and simplify it to three or four curves rather than copying every detail. Swap the garland for a string of tiny paper hearts taped in a zigzag if straight hanging shapes feel too fiddly.

One heart tipped at an angle near the cat’s paw sells the whole action.

Palette: Chocolate Brown,Cherry Red,Pale Pink,Cream

If you enjoy painting pets in small scenes like this, you will likely enjoy working through more animal subjects at this same simple level.

Take the figure back outside for a girl carrying ranunculus wrapped in brown paper down a snowy street. Paint the street and buildings first as flat simplified shapes in cream and soft grey, keeping architectural detail to just a few windows so the figure stays the focus.

Block in her coat and the paper-wrapped bouquet as the two largest shapes in the scene, cherry red coat against a chocolate brown paper cone, with the ranunculus heads peeking out as small layered circles in pink and cherry red. Snow works best added last as scattered white gouache dots flicked from a loaded brush held above the paper, never painted as neat individual flakes.

If the flowers start looking like a blob, paint the paper cone first, let it dry, then add just five or six flower circles rather than crowding in more, since fewer larger shapes read better at this flat, graphic scale. A dry sponge dabbed lightly in white also gives a nice soft snow texture as an alternative to flicking.

Keep her footprints out of the scene entirely, the falling snow tells enough of the story.

You Will Need

• old toothbrush for snow splatter

Palette: Cherry Red,Chocolate Brown,Pink,Soft Grey

Zoom right in for a close still life: cherry red mittens wrapped around a cup of hot chocolate. Paint the mug first as a simple cream cylinder with a chocolate brown rim, then fill it with a flat dark brown for the drink, leaving a small cream swirl shape on top for whipped cream before it dries.

Build the mittens as two overlapping rounded shapes in cherry red, wrapped around the mug rather than beside it, with a thin pale pink cuff line at the wrist of each. The easiest place this goes wrong is the fingers looking stiff, so keep the mitten shape soft and rounded with no individual fingers at all, just one simple mitten silhouette per hand.

Add two or three mini marshmallows as small cream circles floating on the whipped cream, and a single curl of steam in thin grey-white if you want a bit of warmth rising off the cup.

Swap the whipped cream for a simple dusting of chocolate brown dots if you want a less sweet, more grown-up mug.

Palette: Cherry Red,Chocolate Brown,Cream,Pale Pink

Narrow the frame further for just a hand writing a Valentine card with a fountain pen and red ink. Paint the card and desk surface first as flat cream shapes, then add the pen as a simple elongated chocolate brown shape held at an angle across the page.

Build the hand last in a warm cream or soft pink skin tone, kept simple with rounded fingers rather than detailed knuckles, since too much anatomy fights the flat graphic style of this piece. Paint the ink line trailing from the pen tip in cherry red, thinner where the pen lifts and thicker where it presses down, which is the one detail that makes the whole scene feel like it is mid-motion rather than staged.

If the hand looks awkward, trace loosely around your own hand holding a pen in the pose you want, then simplify every finger to one smooth curve. This close, quiet subject pairs beautifully with other love letter scenes, and if letter writing is a favorite theme for you, the valentines junk journal pages are worth a look too.

Finish with a few thin cherry red lines suggesting handwriting, never actual legible words.

Palette: Chocolate Brown,Cherry Red,Cream,Soft Pink

Widen out again for a bistro table for two with a single red rose in a bud vase. Paint the table itself first as a flat round shape in cream or pale pink, then add two simple chair backs in chocolate brown curving in from either edge of the frame.

Build the bud vase as a thin cream cylinder, then paint the rose on top as just three or four overlapping cherry red petal shapes with a chocolate brown stem, since one clean rose reads better at this graphic scale than a fussy, many-petaled one. Two small plates and two glasses sketched in as simple cream shapes finish the table setting without pulling focus from the rose.

If the table looks empty, resist adding more objects and instead vary the sizes of what is already there, a slightly taller glass, a slightly wider plate, which keeps the composition interesting without clutter. A jam jar makes a fine stand-in for the bud vase if you do not have a tall thin shape in mind.

Keep the chairs just suggested shapes at the frame’s edge so the rose stays the center of the piece.

Palette: Cherry Red,Chocolate Brown,Cream,Pale Pink

Bring motion back with a girl tying a heart balloon to her friend’s door handle. Paint the door first as a large flat chocolate brown rectangle with a simple cream panel detail, then leave the handle area empty until the balloon is ready.

Build the balloon as one clean heart silhouette in cherry red, with a thin cream highlight curve near the top to suggest its shine, and a single thin string trailing down to where her hand ties it off at the handle. Her figure can stay small and simple here, a flat pink coat shape and chocolate brown hair, since the balloon is the real subject of this piece.

If the heart shape looks lopsided, draw it lightly in pencil first using two overlapping circles for the top lobes and a point at the bottom, a trick that works for every heart in this whole list. Swap the balloon for a cluster of three smaller hearts tied together if one large shape feels too plain.

Angle the string slightly so the balloon looks like it is tugging gently in the wind rather than hanging dead still.

Palette: Cherry Red,Chocolate Brown,Pink,Cream

Settle into a quieter still life again with a stack of love letters tied with string beside a bedside lamp. Paint the lamp first as a simple cream shade over a chocolate brown base, switched on so the shade glows slightly warmer at its center than at its edges.

Stack the letters as three or four flat cream rectangles, slightly offset from each other so the pile looks real rather than a single block, then wrap a thin brown string diagonally around the whole stack with a small bow at the front. A cherry red wax seal painted as one small circle on the top envelope adds a satisfying focal point without much extra work.

If the lamp glow looks flat, add a soft circle of pale cream around the shade before the letters go in, blending it gently while still wet, then let that dry completely before painting the crisp letter edges on top. This subject sits nicely beside the fountain pen scene earlier on this list if you are building a desk-themed pair.

Keep the background behind the lamp dark enough that the warm glow actually reads as light.

Palette: Cream,Chocolate Brown,Cherry Red,Warm Yellow

Move to a sunnier still life: a pink typewriter on a sunny desk beside a vase of tulips. Paint the typewriter body first as one solid pink shape, then add the chocolate brown keys as a neat grid of small circles across the front, keeping them evenly spaced so the machine reads clearly even in flat color.

Build the vase beside it as a simple cream cylinder holding four or five cherry red tulips, each tulip a closed petal shape rather than an open bloom, since closed tulips are easier to keep tidy at this graphic scale. A sheet of cream paper rolled into the typewriter, painted as a simple rectangle poking out the top, finishes the desk nicely.

If the keyboard grid starts drifting out of line, lay a few light pencil guidelines across the typewriter body before you paint a single key. Swap the tulips for ranunculus if you prefer a fuller, rounder flower shape instead.

A thin strip of warm yellow light across the desk corner suggests sun through a window without painting an actual window.

Palette: Pink,Chocolate Brown,Cherry Red,Cream

Bring a pet back in with a dog in a red sweater trotting along with a single rose held in its mouth. Paint the dog’s body first as a simple flat chocolate brown or cream silhouette, legs mid-stride so the whole pose feels like movement rather than a stiff standing portrait.

Layer the sweater on top as a cherry red shape wrapped around the chest and back, leaving the legs and head in the dog’s natural color so the sweater reads as clothing rather than fur. The rose held in its mouth is just three small petal shapes in a deeper red with a short green-brown stem, kept tiny since it is a prop, not the main subject.

If the trotting pose looks flat, check that the front and back legs on each side are staggered rather than lined up evenly, which is the simplest trick for suggesting motion in a flat illustration. A small curved tail lifted up finishes the sense of a happy, busy dog.

Keep the background plain cream so the red sweater is the brightest thing in the frame.

Palette: Chocolate Brown,Cherry Red,Cream,Deep Red

Return to the shop counter for a florist wrapping peonies in brown paper behind her counter. Paint the counter and shelves behind her first in flat chocolate brown and cream, with a few extra flower shapes tucked into the background so the space feels stocked without needing real detail.

Build the florist as a simple standing figure in a pink or cream apron, hands pressed against a sheet of brown paper folded around a bundle of peonies. Paint the peonies as layered round petal clusters in cherry red and pale pink, painted light color first then a few darker cherry red strokes dragged into the center while still slightly damp to suggest the folded petals without painting each one.

If the peony clusters look like solid blobs, break each one into three overlapping circles of slightly different pink and red before you add any darker center strokes. This scene pairs well with the earlier flower stall idea if you want a matching pair of florist-themed pieces for a wall.

Finish with one thin string tied around the paper bundle in chocolate brown.

Palette: Chocolate Brown,Pink,Cherry Red,Cream

Take the scene outside again for a girl in a heart-print scarf skating on a city rink. Paint the rink itself first as a flat pale blue-grey oval with a few thin white streaks scraped in with the brush handle while the paint is still wet, suggesting ice without painting every scrape.

Build her figure mid-glide, one leg extended back, in a cherry red coat with a cream scarf dotted in small chocolate brown or pink hearts, kept simple since a busy scarf pattern can easily overwhelm a small figure. Eye level matters here: paint the rink’s far edge a little higher on the page than its near edge, and skyline buildings small and set back, which gives the ice a believable sense of distance even in flat color.

If her gliding pose looks stiff, lean her upper body slightly forward over her extended leg rather than keeping her upright, which instantly reads as motion. Swap the city skyline for a simple row of bare winter trees if buildings feel too fiddly to paint small.

Keep her arms loose and slightly out from her sides for balance.

Palette: Cherry Red,Blue Grey,Cream,Pink

Step into a pink diner booth with strawberry milkshakes and a jukebox for a fuller interior scene. Paint the booth seats first as one large flat pink shape curving around the table, then add the chocolate brown table top and a cream checkerboard floor glimpsed at the bottom edge of the frame.

Build two tall milkshake glasses on the table in cream with a cherry red strawberry swirl near the top of each, a straw leaning at a slight angle in every glass, since two matching straight straws look stiffer than two leaning slightly different ways. The jukebox in the background is just a simplified glowing rectangle in cherry red and cream, enough to suggest the diner without painting its full detail.

If the booth’s curve looks awkward, paint it as one smooth continuous shape rather than piecing it together from straight sections, using a single confident brush stroke if you can manage one. This full interior is a bigger undertaking than most ideas on this list, so budget closer to the forty-minute end if you want every element finished cleanly.

Keep the jukebox soft and slightly blurred at its edges so it reads as background, not a second subject.

Palette: Pink,Chocolate Brown,Cherry Red,Cream

Keep the retro mood going with a woman in a cherry red dress browsing a record shop. Paint the record shelves first as a flat chocolate brown grid filled with small cream and pink record sleeve shapes, kept simple rectangles so the shelf reads instantly without real cover art.

Build her figure flipping through one row of records, cherry red dress against the muted brown shelving so she stands out immediately as the brightest shape on the page. Keep her pose simple, one hand resting on the top of a record divider, head tilted slightly down toward what she is browsing, which reads as absorbed rather than posed.

If the shelf grid looks mechanical, vary two or three record sleeves to a brighter pink or cream so the row has rhythm instead of looking stamped from one template. Swap the record shop for a bookshop shelf of spines if records feel unfamiliar to paint.

Finish with a single small heart sticker shape on one visible record sleeve for a subtle Valentine touch.

Palette: Cherry Red,Chocolate Brown,Pink,Cream

Return to a close still life with a box of pastel macarons open on a pink bedspread. Paint the bedspread first as a flat pink shape filling most of the background, then add a few soft folds with a slightly deeper pink dragged in while the base is still damp.

Build the macaron box as a cream rectangle with the lid propped open behind it, then fill the rows inside with small flat circles in pale pink, cherry red and a soft cream, each macaron given a thin darker line around its middle to suggest the filling without painting texture. Keeping every macaron the same size, just shifted in color, is what makes this read as a real box rather than a scattered pile.

If the rows look crowded, leave a small gap between each macaron rather than letting them touch, which keeps the flat shapes readable at a glance. A cupcake liner makes a fine stand-in prop if you would rather paint one macaron close up than a full box.

Finish with one macaron lifted out and set beside the box, slightly overlapping the bedspread fold.

Palette: Pink,Cherry Red,Cream,Deep Pink

Bring two figures together for two friends at a galentine dinner raising pink drinks. Paint the table first as a flat cream shape, then add two simple seated figures facing each other, one in cherry red and one in chocolate brown, so they read as distinct people at a glance.

Build the two drink glasses as the brightest small shapes on the table, pale pink liquid in simple cream glasses, raised slightly toward each other in a toast rather than sitting flat on the table. Keep both faces simple, a suggestion of a smile rather than detailed features, since this flat editorial style relies on pose and color more than facial expression to carry the warmth of the scene.

If the two figures look too similar, change one woman’s hairstyle and one sleeve length so they read as separate people rather than copies of each other. A small vase of red anemones set between them finishes the table without adding much extra work.

Tilt both glasses toward the same point above the table so the toast reads clearly as one shared gesture.

Palette: Cherry Red,Chocolate Brown,Pink,Cream

Slow down for a quiet still life: a pomegranate cut open on a plate next to a folded love note. Paint the pomegranate’s outer skin first as a deep chocolate-red rounded shape, then cut it open with a confident single line and fill the exposed half with small cherry red cluster shapes for the seeds, packed close but each one still a distinct little gem.

Build the plate underneath as a simple cream oval, then fold the love note as a small rectangle of cream paper tucked just beside the fruit, one corner slightly lifted so it looks recently set down rather than glued flat to the page. A few loose seeds scattered on the plate beside the fruit add a nice sense that someone has already started eating it.

If the seed cluster looks too uniform, vary two or three seeds to a slightly darker red so the texture reads as real fruit rather than a solid red patch. Swap the pomegranate for a cut strawberry if the seed clusters feel fiddly at this scale.

Keep the note’s fold line crisp so it reads instantly as paper against the softer fruit shape.

Palette: Deep Red,Cherry Red,Cream,Chocolate Brown

Bring weather into the scene with a girl buying a red rose from a street cart in the rain. Paint the cart first as a simple chocolate brown stand holding a bucket of cherry red roses, then build the rain as thin diagonal cream or pale grey lines added last over the whole scene with a dry, loaded brush dragged quickly downward.

Paint her figure in a cherry red or chocolate brown coat holding an umbrella as a simple curved shape above her head, reaching one hand out toward the cart to take a single rose. Light matters here even on a grey day: keep a small patch near the cart’s lantern or sign slightly warmer in tone than the rest of the rainy scene, which gives the eye somewhere pleasant to land.

If the rain lines look too heavy, paint fewer of them, spaced unevenly, rather than covering the whole page evenly, since scattered rain reads more naturally than a uniform grid. A simple puddle reflection painted as a thin mirrored strip under the cart adds atmosphere without much extra effort.

Keep her umbrella tilted slightly to shelter the rose, not her own head.

Palette: Cherry Red,Chocolate Brown,Blue Grey,Cream

Return to a still life for a red rotary telephone off the hook on a pink bed. Paint the bedspread first as a flat pink shape with a few soft fold shadows, then let it dry fully before the telephone goes anywhere near it.

Build the phone’s body as a rounded cherry red shape with the handset lifted off and resting slightly apart, connected by a looping chocolate brown cord that curls across the bedspread in one or two soft loops. The dial itself is just a flat cream circle with evenly spaced small holes, which gives the whole object instant recognition without needing fine detail.

If the cord’s curl looks stiff, draw it lightly in pencil first as a loose spiral rather than trying to paint a perfect curve freehand in one go. Swap the rotary phone for a vintage rotary alarm clock if you would rather paint a round face with hands instead of a dial.

Keep the handset slightly tilted off its cradle so the scene reads as a call just finished rather than a phone simply placed there.

Palette: Cherry Red,Pink,Chocolate Brown,Cream

Keep the still life close with red lipstick and a perfume bottle on a vanity beside a love letter. Paint the vanity surface first as a flat cream shape, then build the perfume bottle as a simple geometric shape in pale pink glass with a chocolate brown cap, kept crisp and faceted rather than rounded to match the editorial print feel.

Paint the lipstick tube standing upright beside it in cherry red and chocolate brown, the bullet of color itself just a small rounded cherry red shape at the top. A folded love letter tucked just behind these two objects, painted as a simple cream rectangle with one corner lifted, finishes the little vanity scene without crowding it.

If the perfume bottle’s facets look messy, keep it to three flat planes of slightly different pink rather than trying to paint many small glass facets, which reads cleaner at this graphic scale. A small round hand mirror propped behind the items works well as a swap if you do not want a perfume bottle shape.

Leave a thin cream highlight down one edge of the bottle to suggest glass.

Palette: Pink,Cherry Red,Chocolate Brown,Cream

Return to a sweet still life with a red velvet cupcake with a cherry on top at a cafe counter. Paint the cupcake liner first as a simple fluted chocolate brown cup, then build the cake itself as a rounded deep red dome rising just above the liner’s edge.

Pile the frosting on top in flat cream swirled shapes, painted with two or three confident brush strokes rather than many small ones, since too much detail in the swirl fights the clean, flat look of this whole series. Finish with one cherry red cherry set slightly off-center on top, its small chocolate brown stem curling up and over to one side.

If the frosting swirl looks lumpy, practice the stroke once on scrap paper first: load the brush fully, then drag it in one continuous spiral from the outside in, lifting cleanly at the center. A dollop of plain cream icing without the cherry works fine if red velvet’s deep color feels tricky to mix.

Set the cupcake on a small cream plate so it reads clearly against the cafe counter behind it.

Palette: Deep Red,Chocolate Brown,Cream,Cherry Red

Bring the figure back for a girl painting her nails cherry red beside a box of chocolates. Paint her hand first as the main shape in the frame, fingers spread slightly so each nail is visible, with a tiny brush held in her other hand touching the tip of one finger.

Fill each nail with a flat cherry red shape, leaving a thin cream crescent unpainted at the base of each to suggest the shine of wet polish, which is a quick but convincing trick at this scale. The open chocolate box beside her hand is just a row of small domed shapes in chocolate brown nestled in cream paper cups, kept simple since the hand is the real subject.

If the nails look too uniform, paint one finger’s nail slightly glossier with an extra cream highlight dot, which reads as a nearly finished manicure rather than five identical shapes. Swap the chocolate box for a small bottle of nail polish lying on its side if you would rather skip painting a dozen chocolates.

Keep her skin tone flat and simple so the cherry red nails stay the brightest thing in the piece.

Palette: Cherry Red,Chocolate Brown,Cream,Soft Pink

Build a fuller scene with a picnic in a winter greenhouse, heart-shaped sandwiches laid out on a blanket. Paint the greenhouse structure first as simple chocolate brown framing around large flat panes of pale cream and blue-grey glass, since the structure gives this scene its setting before anything else goes in.

Lay the picnic blanket beneath as a flat pink shape, then arrange the heart-shaped sandwiches across it as small cream shapes with a thin crust line, each cut into the same simple heart silhouette you used for the balloon earlier in this list. A small teapot and two cups in cherry red finish the spread without needing much extra painting.

If the greenhouse panes look flat and lifeless, vary two or three panes to a slightly warmer cream where sunlight might be catching them, which gives the glass a sense of depth even in flat color. This fuller scene takes longer than most ideas here, so treat it as a forty-minute project if you want every pane and sandwich finished cleanly.

Scatter a few potted plants in chocolate brown pots along the greenhouse edge to round out the setting.

Palette: Chocolate Brown,Blue Grey,Pink,Cherry Red

Step back outside for a cherry red bicycle with a basket of tulips at a snowy curb. Paint the bicycle frame first as one confident cherry red shape, then add the chocolate brown basket at the front, slightly tilted so the whole bike reads as parked rather than floating flat on the page.

Fill the basket with tulip shapes in the same way you built the flower stall earlier in this list, four or five closed tulip silhouettes in cherry red and pale pink, tucked close together so they stay inside the basket’s edge. A thin strip of snow along the curb, painted in flat cream with a few darker grey shadow patches where the bike’s wheels press into it, grounds the whole scene.

If the bicycle’s wheels look oval instead of round, trace around a small round object, a coin or a cap, rather than freehanding two perfect circles. Swap the snowy curb for bare pavement with a puddle if you would rather skip painting snow entirely.

Keep the frame’s cherry red the most saturated color in the whole piece so the bike stays the clear focal point.

You Will Need

• small round object to trace wheels

Palette: Cherry Red,Chocolate Brown,Pale Pink,Cream

Bring a figure back into a winter street with a postman carrying a sack of red envelopes through snow. Paint his coat and satchel first as the two largest shapes in the scene, chocolate brown coat against a cherry red sack slung over one shoulder, since that color contrast carries the whole composition.

Spill a few envelopes from the top of the sack as small flat cherry red rectangles, angled differently so they look like they are about to tumble rather than stacked neatly. Keep his walking pose simple, one leg forward and slightly bent, shoulders leaning into the direction he is heading, which reads instantly as movement through snow even without any visible wind lines.

If his pose looks too stiff standing straight up, lean his whole torso forward by a few degrees and bend his front knee more than the back one. A simpler flat cream background street with just a lamp post is enough setting, there is no need to paint full buildings behind him.

Scatter a few white gouache snow dots around his boots to finish the scene.

Palette: Chocolate Brown,Cherry Red,Cream,Soft Grey

Return indoors for a girl sealing envelopes with red wax at a candlelit desk. Paint the desk and candle first, the candle’s flame a small warm yellow shape with a thin orange edge, since this light source decides how the rest of the scene is shaded.

With the candle on one side of the desk, keep that side of her face and the envelope slightly warmer and lighter, while the far side of the scene stays in cooler chocolate brown shadow, the same two-value trick used for the window reading scene earlier in this list but now with warm candlelight instead of daylight. Paint the wax seal itself as a small round cherry red shape pressed onto the envelope flap, slightly uneven at its edge to suggest real melted wax rather than a printed sticker.

If the candlelight glow looks too even, paint a soft circle of warm cream around the flame first and let it dry before adding the crisp desk objects on top, so the glow sits believably behind everything else. A small dish holding a stick of wax and a spoon beside it rounds out the scene.

Keep the flame itself tiny, its glow does the real work.

Palette: Cherry Red,Chocolate Brown,Warm Yellow,Cream

Slow the pace with a woman knitting a red heart sweater by the fire. Paint the fireplace first as a simple chocolate brown frame around a warm glowing interior in orange and cream, then let it dry before the figure sits in front of it.

Build her seated figure in a flat cream or pink chair, knitting needles crossed in her lap with a half-finished cherry red sweater trailing down, a single heart motif already visible knitted into the front in a slightly darker red. Keep the yarn ball beside her chair as one simple round cherry red shape with a few thin trailing lines leading up to the needles.

If the half-finished sweater looks confusing, paint it as a simple flat rectangle of red fabric first, then add the heart motif as one clean shape on top rather than trying to suggest individual knit stitches, which reads as fussy at this scale. Swap the fireplace glow for a simple lamp if an open fire feels like too much extra painting.

Let the fire’s warm light touch one side of her face and chair, leaving the rest of the room in cooler brown shadow.

Palette: Cherry Red,Chocolate Brown,Warm Orange,Cream

Cool the palette slightly for red anemones in a glass jug on a frosty windowsill. Paint the windowsill and frost-edged glass first in flat cream and pale blue-grey, a few thin white frost lines scratched into the corners of the pane with the brush handle before anything else goes in.

Build the jug as a simple cream glass cylinder, then paint the anemones rising from it as rounded cherry red petals around a small dark chocolate brown center, a shape that reads instantly once you get the dark center dot right. Vary the height of three or four stems so the bunch looks gathered rather than cut to a single matching length.

If the petals look flat and papery, leave a thin cream gap between each petal rather than painting them edge to edge, which gives the flower a sense of separate, overlapping shapes even without any shading. A simple mason jar works fine in place of a glass jug if that is what you have on hand.

Keep the window frost subtle, just enough to suggest cold outside the warm red flowers.

For more cool, frost-toned winter still life ideas that pair well with this one, the Christmas junk journal collection has several icy windowsill scenes worth a look.

Return to a shop scene with a girl choosing from jars of candy hearts at a sweet shop. Paint the row of jars first, reusing the approach from the candy shop counter earlier in this list, cream jars with cherry red and pink candies visible inside, lined up along a chocolate brown shelf.

Build her figure standing on tiptoe slightly to reach a high jar, one arm raised, since this small gesture gives the scene more life than a flat standing pose facing forward. Keep her coat a single bright cherry red shape so she stands out clearly against the busier, more detailed row of jars behind her.

If the raised arm looks stiff, bend the elbow slightly rather than painting a straight stiff line from shoulder to jar, which reads far more natural even in a simple flat style. A small chalkboard sign with a blank price square (no actual lettering) adds a nice shop detail above the jars.

Keep her feet together and lifted slightly to sell the reaching motion.

Close the series with a girl reading Valentine cards on the stairs with her cat curled beside her. Paint the stairs first as a simple repeating chocolate brown shape going up at an angle, which gives this scene a strong diagonal that most other ideas on this list do not have.

Seat her partway up in a cherry red sweater, knees drawn up, a small stack of cream cards spread across her lap and one step below her, each card edged with a thin red line. Curl the cat in flat cream or chocolate brown against her side, tail wrapped neatly around its body, resting rather than reaching for anything, a calm note to end this list of scenes on.

If the staircase diagonal looks confusing, paint just three or four visible steps rather than a long full flight, which keeps the perspective simple and easy to manage at this level. Swap the cat for a small dog curled at her feet if cats are not your preferred animal to paint.

Keep the color palette here matched closely to the very first postbox scene, cherry red, cream and chocolate brown, so the whole series feels like one cohesive set when framed together.

What to Do Next

Pick one scene that matches how much time you actually have today, a close still life like the cherries or the mittens if you want something finished fast, or the diner booth and greenhouse picnic if you have a longer stretch ahead. Mix your cherry red, pink and chocolate brown before you start, keep a sheet of smooth paper ready, and let the first shape dry fully before the next one goes on top.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of gouache works best for this flat, editorial Valentine illustration style?

Student grade gouache in tubes works well, since it covers opaquely in flat layers. Mix cherry red, pink and chocolate brown ahead of time in small dishes so every scene stays consistent across the series.

How do I keep gouache edges crisp instead of soft and blurred?

Paint each shape on fully dry paper and let every layer dry before adding the one on top. Working wet into wet is what softens edges, so patience between layers matters more than brush control here.

Do I need to draw these scenes in pencil first?

A light pencil sketch helps, especially for figures and proportions like the postbox or bicycle scenes. Keep the lines faint since gouache is opaque enough to cover most pencil marks as you paint over them.

What paper or surface suits this kind of Valentine illustration?

Smooth illustration board or heavy hot press watercolor paper works best, since rougher textures break up the crisp flat edges this style depends on. Avoid cold press paper if sharp lines matter to you.

How long does one of these scenes usually take to finish?

Most of these ideas finish in twenty to forty minutes once your palette is mixed and ready. Simpler still life subjects go faster, while fuller scenes with two figures or a detailed setting take closer to the longer end.
