A good winter illustration does not need snowdrifts of detail to feel cold and quiet. Flat shapes, a calm palette and one clear gesture carry the whole mood, which is exactly why this style suits a phone break or a quiet evening with gouache out on the table.
Below are 34 scenes built around stylish people, their dogs and cats, and the small rituals of a Scandinavian winter: sauna steam, wood stoves, sledges, cold plunges, frosty windows. Pick one that matches your mood today and paint it start to finish in one sitting.

Start the whole winter illustration set with a woman in a long camel coat walking a dachshund in a tiny snowsuit, since the shapes here are forgiving and the color story sets up everything that follows. Block the coat as one tall triangle-topped rectangle in a flat wash of warm camel gouache, let it dry fully, then add the dachshund as a low stretched oval with four short peg legs in icy blue.
Work largest shape to smallest: coat first, dog second, then the thin red lead connecting them, then face and boot details last so nothing smears under your hand. The coat silhouette is where this goes wrong if the shoulders slope unevenly, so pencil a light center line down the body first and check both sides match before you commit paint.
Keep the face to a short dash of a mouth and two dot eyes, Scandi editorial style thrives on restraint here. If you do not have gouache, flat acrylic diluted slightly with water gives nearly the same matte finish.
Paint the snow as plain cream paper left bare rather than mixing a separate white, it keeps the whole page feeling light.
Palette: Camel, Icy Blue, Cherry Red, Cream
Move from one figure to two with friends in matching burgundy beanies sharing a bench and a thermos, a nice next step because it asks you to balance a pair of shapes side by side. Sketch the bench as a simple horizontal plank first, then build each friend as a rounded coat shape sitting on top, leaving a small gap of cream paper between their shoulders so the composition reads as two distinct people rather than one blob.
Paint coats in two different but related tones, say chocolate brown and icy blue, so the matching beanies in burgundy tie them together visually. Add the thermos as a small cylinder passed between their hands, painted last in a bright cherry red so the eye lands there.
If the bench looks flat and lifeless, add one thin darker brown line along its front edge to suggest the plank thickness without shading the whole thing.
No burgundy on hand, mix a little cherry red into chocolate brown and it reads just as well.
Palette: Burgundy, Chocolate Brown, Icy Blue, Cherry Red
Give yourself a quieter solo figure next with a girl in a puffer coat reading on a snowy park bench, a good subject for practicing how one bent shape can suggest a whole pose. Block the puffer coat as a rounded, slightly lumpy oval shape rather than a smooth one, since the quilted look of a puffer comes from a wobblier outline than a wool coat would have.
Paint the bench underneath first in chocolate brown, then the coat on top in icy blue, then the small open book as two pale cream triangles held at her lap. Work the bent knees and tucked feet last, keeping the boots simple and dark.
Proportion is the trap here: measure the coat against the bench length before you paint, a puffer coat drawn too large swallows the bench entirely. Hold your pencil at arm’s length and compare the two widths before committing to paint.
Pull in a scarf of cherry red if the page feels too cool otherwise.
Palette: Icy Blue, Chocolate Brown, Cherry Red, Cream
If you enjoy this quiet bench pose, the park drawing ideas page has more seated figures and bench compositions to borrow from.
Bring in motion with a corgi in a red parka leading its owner through deep snow, since this scene lives or dies on the angle of the lead and the lean of both bodies. Eye level sits low here, close to the corgi’s height, which changes everything: draw the snowdrifts as tall mounded shapes that rise past the dog’s shoulders, making the small parka-clad body look like it is genuinely pushing through.
Paint the owner’s coat shape first, leaning forward at the waist, then the corgi low and stretched out ahead, lead taut between them. The red parka on the dog is the focal point, so save your brightest cherry red for that shape alone.
Short corgi legs are easy to overdraw into long ones by accident, so keep them as four stubby triangles, no longer than the depth of the snowdrift beside them.
Swap red for icy blue on the parka if you want a cooler, calmer version of the same scene.
Palette: Cherry Red, Chocolate Brown, Icy Blue, Cream
Step indoors for a Scandinavian living room with a wood stove, sheepskins and a sleeping dog, a calmer interior scene that rewards patience with flat shapes rather than speed. Lay out the room in large blocks first: the dark stove body, the pale sheepskin rug, the sleeping dog curled on top, working darkest to lightest so the cream sheepskin stays clean of any muddy brown underneath.
Light in this scene comes from the stove’s small orange window, so keep every other shape matte and flat and let that one warm glow be the brightest note on the page. A soft cherry-red flicker inside the stove window does the job without needing any actual shading.
Sheepskin texture goes wrong fast if you try to paint every curl, so suggest it with a few short broken white-cream lines over the base shape instead of covering the whole rug in texture.
No sheepskin reference handy, a plain pale oval rug works just as well and keeps the scene simpler.
Palette: Chocolate Brown, Cream, Cherry Red, Icy Blue
Pick up the pace again with a woman cycling with a sage green scarf flying in light snow, a subject that wants a strong diagonal running through the whole page. Angle the bicycle frame and her body along one confident diagonal line from bottom left to upper right, since a cyclist drawn sitting bolt upright never looks like she is actually moving.
Paint the bike frame first in a thin dark line, then her coat shape leaning into the direction of travel, then the scarf last as a loose ribbon shape trailing behind her in sage. Snow becomes a handful of small round cream dots scattered loosely across the icy blue sky, not a uniform scatter.
If the whole scene feels static, check the scarf: a scarf painted straight down kills the sense of speed instantly, so curve it back and let it taper to a point.
Cherry red mittens on the handlebars give the eye somewhere warm to land.
Palette: Sage Green, Icy Blue, Chocolate Brown, Cherry Red
Switch to a cat walking delicately along a snowy fence top, a good subject for practicing long thin shapes and the particular way a cat’s spine curves when it balances. Draw the fence as a straight horizontal line of cream-topped posts first, then place the cat’s body as one long S-curve along the top rail, tail lifted for balance.
Paint the fence in chocolate brown with a thin cream cap of snow along each post, then the cat last in one flat color so its silhouette stays crisp against the brown rail beneath it. Keep all four paws small and close together on the rail line, since paws drawn too wide apart make the cat look like it is falling rather than balancing.
If the tail shape looks stiff, paint it as a tapering curve rather than a straight line, thick at the base and thin at the tip.
A grey or icy blue cat works just as well as a black one here and keeps the palette consistent.
Palette: Icy Blue, Chocolate Brown, Cream, Cherry Red
More quiet cat scenes like this live on the cat illustration ideas page if you want to keep this mood going.
Bring in a little drama with a woman in a towel stepping out of a sauna door into snow, a scene built almost entirely from the contrast between the dark doorway and the bright snow outside. Paint the sauna interior as a solid dark chocolate brown rectangle first, leaving the doorway itself as an open cream shape, then place her figure stepping through the threshold wrapped in a plain white towel.
Light source matters here: the warm glow stays inside the doorway while everything outside reads cool, so keep her towel and skin tones warm and the snow around her flat icy blue and cream. That temperature contrast does more work than any detail could.
If the doorway edge looks soft and uncertain, lay a strip of masking tape down the frame line before you paint the dark interior, then peel it back for a perfectly crisp edge.
Swap the towel for a robe if you would rather keep more of her covered.
You Will Need
- masking tape for a crisp doorway edge
Palette: Chocolate Brown, Cream, Icy Blue, Cherry Red
Carry that sauna energy straight into a woman cold plunging into a lake hole while a friend holds a towel, a scene that pairs two figures in very different states of motion. Cut the ice hole as a dark rounded shape first, then paint the plunging woman mid-descent with arms slightly raised, body half submerged below the ice line.
Work the friend standing beside the hole second, towel held open and ready, her stillness contrasting with the plunger’s bent, active pose. Keep both faces simple, maybe just a closed-eye dash on the one going under.
The edge where body meets water is where this painting can turn muddy, so paint the dark lake water first, let it dry completely, then lay the pale skin shape cleanly on top rather than trying to paint around a wet edge.
If open water feels too tricky, paint the hole as a flat icy blue oval instead of adding any reflection at all.
Palette: Icy Blue, Chocolate Brown, Cream, Cherry Red
Warm the palette up with a woman carrying a crate of pomegranates through a snowy market, a scene where one bright accent color against all that cream and brown does most of the storytelling. Block her coat and the crate as two connected shapes first, coat flowing down over the crate’s edge, then fill the crate with small round pomegranate shapes in deep cherry red.
Paint the market stalls behind her as simple flat rectangles in chocolate brown, kept smaller and less detailed than she is so she stays the clear focal point. Snow falls as a few scattered cream dots over the whole scene, added last so they sit on top of every other shape.
If the pomegranates look like a flat red smear, paint each one as a distinct small circle with a tiny dark dot at the crown before moving on, that single mark reads as fruit instantly.
Out of cherry red, cranberries in the same pose work just as well.
Palette: Cherry Red, Chocolate Brown, Cream, Icy Blue
Move to a mother and child in matching knit hats pulling a wooden sled, a scene that needs the two figures scaled correctly against each other to feel believable. Measure the child’s height against the mother’s body before you paint: a child drawn too close to adult size loses the whole point of the scene, so keep her roughly two thirds the mother’s height, hand reaching up to hold hers.
Paint the mother’s coat shape first, then the smaller child beside her, then the wooden sled trailing behind on a rope, its slats suggested with two or three thin brown lines rather than every board drawn separately.
Matching knit hats in the same cherry red tie the pair together visually even though their coats differ in color, so save that red for the hats specifically and nothing else nearby.
If rope is fiddly to paint thin and straight, use the tip of a fine liner brush loaded lightly rather than a full brush stroke.
Palette: Cherry Red, Chocolate Brown, Icy Blue, Cream
Bring the mood back indoors with a dog in a cable knit sweater watching snow through a glass door, a quiet subject that turns on one simple trick: paint the glass pane as a slightly cooler, slightly duller version of the outdoor snow scene behind it, not a sharp clear view. That subtle shift in tone is what makes a viewer read it as glass rather than an open doorway.
Block the dog sitting upright facing away from you first, cable knit sweater pattern suggested with two or three raised vertical lines rather than a full knit texture. Paint the door frame around it in chocolate brown, then the muted snow scene beyond the glass last.
If the sweater pattern turns fussy, stop at three lines down the back, any more and it stops reading as knitwear and starts looking cluttered.
A plain sage sweater instead of a patterned one simplifies this further for a first attempt.
Palette: Chocolate Brown, Sage Green, Icy Blue, Cream
The dog illustration ideas page has more winter coat and window-watching poses if this one suits your dog.
Slow right down with a woman in a chunky cardigan arranging winter branches in a vase, a still, calm subject that rewards careful spacing more than speed. Paint the vase and table first as simple flat shapes, then add bare branches one at a time working from the tallest center branch outward, leaving gaps of cream paper between them so the arrangement does not turn into one solid brown mass.
Her cardigan comes next in a soft chocolate or sage tone, loose and oversized, hands reaching up toward the branches rather than down.
Branches are the easiest part of this scene to overcrowd, so count them before you start, five or six thin lines reads as an arrangement while ten starts to look like static.
If you want more color, add two or three small dried seed heads in cherry red near the branch tips.
This same quiet still-life energy also suits the scenes in the winter botanical journal pages if branches and berries are your favorite part of the season.
Palette: Sage Green, Chocolate Brown, Cherry Red, Cream
Add some comedy with a girl teaching her dad to skate on a frozen lake, a scene that works best when the two poses contrast sharply. Give the girl a confident, balanced stance with knees slightly bent and arms out, then draw the dad leaning back with arms flailing, one skate kicked up, so the two figures read as teacher and nervous student at a glance.
Paint the lake ice first as one flat pale icy blue shape, then both figures on top, girl painted first since she is the steadier anchor of the composition, dad added second and slightly off balance beside her.
If his pose looks too similar to hers, exaggerate the lean further than feels natural, a subtle lean reads as standing still rather than wobbling.
No skates in your reference, plain boots with thin dark blade lines underneath will still read clearly as ice skates.
Palette: Icy Blue, Chocolate Brown, Cherry Red, Cream
Return to something simpler with a person in a sheepskin coat with an armful of birch logs, a subject built mostly from one strong central shape. Paint the sheepskin coat as a rounded, slightly shaggy-edged silhouette, texture suggested the same way as the earlier living room rug, a few short broken cream lines rather than full coverage.
Birch logs go on top of the coat shape last, each one a simple pale cylinder with two or three thin dark horizontal marks to suggest birch bark, stacked in the crook of the arm. Keep the stack to four or five logs at most so it stays readable as an armful rather than a woodpile.
If the logs look like plain sticks instead of birch, those dark horizontal bark marks are the detail that sells it, do not skip them even on a quick version.
A plain brown coat without the sheepskin texture is a fine simpler substitute.
Palette: Cream, Chocolate Brown, Icy Blue, Cherry Red
Build out a wider scene with a winter picnic on a snowy hill with a thermos and a greyhound, which gives you more room to practice composing several small shapes across one page. In ten minutes, keep it to a blanket, a thermos and the greyhound curled beside it, three shapes on a plain cream hill, enough to tell the whole story.
With forty minutes to spend, add a small basket, a second cup, and a scattering of snow dots across the hill so the scene feels fuller without adding more large shapes. Paint the hill first as one sweeping cream curve, then the blanket, then the greyhound’s long low curved body last so its silhouette sits clean against the blanket’s edge.
If the greyhound’s legs look like sticks, remember they fold under the body when curled, so paint one simple tucked oval rather than four visible legs.
Swap the greyhound for any slim-bodied dog you know better if the breed feels unfamiliar to draw.
Palette: Cream, Chocolate Brown, Icy Blue, Cherry Red
Pick the energy back up with a woman in a cream coat crossing a snowy street with a bunch of tulips, a scene that depends on one bright shape standing out against a nearly monochrome background. Paint the street and buildings behind her first in muted chocolate and icy blue, kept deliberately flat and low-contrast so nothing competes with her.
Her cream coat should sit only slightly lighter than the background, almost blending, which makes the bunch of cherry red tulips in her arms the one unmistakable focal point on the page. Paint the tulips last, each bloom a simple closed oval on a thin stem, four or five blooms is plenty.
If the coat disappears entirely into the background, add one thin darker outline along its edge so the silhouette still reads clearly against the street.
Any other bright bloom, ranunculus or anemones, substitutes easily for tulips here.
Palette: Cream, Chocolate Brown, Icy Blue, Cherry Red
Slow down again with a minimalist bedroom with linen sheets and snow outside the window, an interior that leans entirely on empty space doing real work. Block the room first as large, mostly empty flat shapes, bed, window, maybe a single chair, leaving generous cream space between them rather than filling every corner.
Paint the linen sheets in a soft warm cream, slightly different in tone from the wall behind so the bed still reads as a distinct shape, then the window last with its pale icy blue snow scene beyond.
This composition goes wrong the moment you add too much furniture, so if you are tempted to fill the room, stop at three objects total and trust the empty space to carry the calm.
If plain linen feels too flat, add one line of soft shadow fold across the sheets using a slightly darker cream.
Palette: Cream, Chocolate Brown, Icy Blue, Sage Green
Head back outdoors with a man in a beanie at a ferry rail with gulls over icy water, a scene with a strong horizontal mood. Set the eye level roughly at the rail itself, which puts the horizon line just above his shoulders and lets the icy water stretch wide and flat below, a calmer feeling than a scene looking down from above would give.
Paint the water first as one broad icy blue shape, then the ferry rail as a simple straight line across the lower third of the page, then his figure leaning on it, beanie and coat in chocolate brown.
Gulls go in last as a few simple curved w-shapes scattered across the sky, no more than four or five, since a sky crowded with birds competes with the quiet mood of the rest of the scene.
No gulls on hand to reference, a single bird is enough to suggest the whole flock.
Palette: Icy Blue, Chocolate Brown, Cream, Cherry Red
Bring some playful texture in with a girl in rubber boots kicking through slush puddles, a subject where the splash itself is the whole point. Paint her leg mid-kick first, boot angled up and forward, then the puddle beneath as a flat icy blue oval, then the splash last using a dry, barely loaded brush dragged quickly outward from the boot to leave broken, speckled marks rather than a solid shape.
That dry brush technique is what sells the motion, a smooth painted splash just looks like a blob, while a few broken dry strokes read instantly as flying slush.
Keep her coat and the rest of the scene calm and flat so the splash stays the liveliest mark on the page.
No dry brush effect coming through, load a toothbrush lightly with icy blue paint and flick it toward the puddle instead.
You Will Need
- old toothbrush for splatter, optional
Palette: Icy Blue, Chocolate Brown, Cherry Red, Cream
Keep the motion going with friends on a big red toboggan with their scarves flying, a lively group scene that needs careful overlap to read clearly. Stack the figures from back to front rather than side by side, each one painted slightly higher on the page than the one in front so they clearly sit one behind the other on the sledge rather than floating separately.
Paint the toboggan itself first in cherry red, a long simple curved shape, then the row of figures on top, then every scarf last, each one a loose ribbon trailing backward in the direction of travel.
If the group starts looking like a pile rather than a sledge ride, check that every scarf trails the same direction, mismatched scarf angles are the fastest way to break the sense of shared speed.
Three riders is plenty; a fourth makes the shape harder to read clearly at this size.
Palette: Cherry Red, Chocolate Brown, Icy Blue, Sage Green
Zoom in close with a girl photographing frost patterns on a car window, a subject that turns the frost itself into the real star of the page. Paint the car window as one dark rectangle first, then add frost patterns on top using a fine brush or the tip of a white gel pen, working in branching, feathery lines that spread from the corners inward rather than covering the glass evenly.
Her figure goes in small, phone or camera raised, standing to one side so the frost pattern stays the largest shape on the page rather than competing with her for attention.
If the frost lines look stiff, loosen your wrist and let each line branch unevenly, real frost never grows in neat symmetrical patterns.
No gel pen handy, scratch thin lines into wet dark gouache with the end of your brush handle for the same feathery effect.
You Will Need
- white gel pen for frost lines
Palette: Chocolate Brown, Cream, Icy Blue, Cherry Red
Have some fun with a border collie herding snowballs around a garden, a playful subject that works well once you think of the snowballs as a flock rather than scattered objects. Paint the collie low and stretched out mid-run first, black and white coat kept to two flat shapes rather than a fully mottled pattern, then scatter four or five round snowball shapes ahead of it in a loose curving line.
That curve matters: arrange the snowballs so they sweep in one direction, echoing how a collie actually herds a flock, rather than scattering them randomly across the page.
If the dog’s herding crouch looks too upright, drop the front half of the body lower than the back, that classic low stalking posture is what reads instantly as herding rather than just running.
A sage green garden hedge behind the scene adds color without any extra detail work.
Palette: Chocolate Brown, Cream, Sage Green, Icy Blue
Step back inside with a cozy hallway with a leash on a hook and a dog waiting by the door, a small still scene built almost entirely from everyday objects. Paint the door and wall first as simple flat planes in chocolate brown and cream, then the leash hanging on its hook as one simple curved loop, then the dog last, seated and facing the door with ears slightly raised in anticipation.
Keep the whole palette narrow here, just two or three tones, since this scene’s charm comes from quiet simplicity rather than busy detail.
If the dog’s waiting posture looks flat, tilt its head very slightly toward the door, that one small gesture is enough to suggest anticipation without any extra linework.
A pair of boots by the door is an easy way to add a second small shape if the scene feels too empty.
Palette: Chocolate Brown, Cream, Cherry Red, Icy Blue
Bring the hallway’s quiet mood further into the evening with a woman lighting candles on a windowsill with her dog watching, a scene where the flame itself becomes the single warm accent. Paint the windowsill and dark window first, then her figure leaning in with a match or lighter, then the dog seated beside her watching, then the candle flames last, each a tiny warm cherry-orange teardrop shape.
Keep every candle flame small and consistent in size so they read as a calm row rather than one large glow, three or four candles is plenty for this composition.
If the scene looks flat without any sense of light, add one soft warm halo of cream around each flame shape, just a slightly lighter ring, to suggest glow without full shading.
No window in your version, a mantelpiece works just as well as the setting.
Palette: Chocolate Brown, Cream, Cherry Red, Icy Blue
Bring in one bold color statement with a girl in a cherry red coat with a white husky puppy in the snow, a scene that leans entirely on the contrast between that one saturated coat and everything pale around it. Paint the snow and sky first in soft cream and icy blue, then her coat in full-strength cherry red, kept as the single most saturated shape anywhere on the page.
Add the husky puppy last, its white coat barely distinguishable from the snow except for two small dark ear tips and eye dots, which keeps it reading as a puppy rather than disappearing entirely.
If the puppy vanishes into the background, that is actually part of the effect, just make sure the ear tips and eyes stay dark enough to anchor its shape.
Swap the husky for any pale-coated dog breed you prefer, the coat color contrast is what matters here.
Palette: Cherry Red, Cream, Icy Blue, Chocolate Brown
Settle into something cozier with a woman under a wool throw in a reading corner with a cat on her feet, a scene that rewards soft overlapping shapes more than crisp separate ones. Paint the armchair first, then her figure seated with legs drawn up, then the wool throw draped loosely over her lap in sage or icy blue, then the cat curled on her feet last, painted small and rounded.
The throw is the trickiest shape here since it needs to look draped rather than flat, so paint two or three soft overlapping folds rather than one single rectangle, each fold just a slightly different tone of the same color.
If the cat on her feet disappears visually, give it one small raised ear and a short tail curl so it reads clearly as a separate shape from the throw.
No throw blanket in your reference, a chunky knit cardigan draped over her lap works as a substitute.
Palette: Sage Green, Chocolate Brown, Cream, Icy Blue
Head back outside with a woman walking home in snowfall with a tote full of wool yarn, a gentle scene that gives you a chance to paint several small round shapes grouped together well. Paint her coat and walking pose first, then the tote bag at her side, then the yarn skeins inside last, three or four overlapping circles in different but related colors, cherry red, sage, cream, so the bag reads as full without needing exact detail.
Falling snow goes in last as a scatter of small cream dots across the whole scene, varied slightly in size so it does not look like a uniform grid.
If the yarn skeins look flat, add one thin curved line trailing from the top of the bag, a single loose thread is enough to suggest soft wool without drawing actual knitting.
Groceries in a paper bag substitute easily if yarn is not the errand you want to paint.
Palette: Cherry Red, Sage Green, Cream, Chocolate Brown
Add a small burst of motion with a man shaking snow from his umbrella at a front door, a compact scene that hinges on one quick gesture. Paint the door and entryway first as calm flat shapes, then his figure leaning slightly with the umbrella tilted at an angle, then the snow flying off its ribs last using the same dry brush flick used for the earlier slush splash, a few short quick strokes rather than a solid spray.
Tilt the umbrella clearly off vertical, since an umbrella held straight up and down does not read as mid-shake at all, the angle is what tells the whole story.
If the flying snow looks too solid and blobby, thin your paint slightly more than usual before loading the dry brush, a thinner mix breaks apart more convincingly.
A porch light beside the door is an easy warm accent if the entryway feels bare.
Palette: Chocolate Brown, Cream, Icy Blue, Cherry Red
Bring two more personalities together with two dogs in mismatched sweaters sniffing each other on a snowy path, a scene that needs two clearly different body shapes to stay readable. Choose two breeds of noticeably different build, one tall and lean, one low and stocky, then paint them nose to nose on a simple path line, bodies angled slightly toward each other rather than parallel.
Paint the taller dog’s sweater in cherry red first, then the smaller dog’s in sage or icy blue, keeping the mismatch obvious since that contrast is the whole charm of the scene.
If both dogs start to look too similar in size, check the path line between them, it should visibly curve or shorten near the smaller dog to suggest it standing a little further back or lower to the ground.
Any two dog breeds you know well work here, the sweater color contrast matters more than the exact breeds.
Palette: Cherry Red, Sage Green, Chocolate Brown, Cream
Return indoors for a calm one with a woman stretching by a big window overlooking snowy pines, a scene built on one long confident body line against a quiet backdrop. Paint the window and pine trees beyond it first, trees kept as simple triangular shapes in chocolate brown layered over icy blue snow, then her stretching figure last, arms raised overhead in one smooth continuous curve from fingertips to feet.
Keep her silhouette the simplest shape on the page, since any fussy detail in the pose competes with the clean line a stretch needs to read clearly.
If the pose looks stiff, check the spine curve specifically, a straight back reads as standing, a slight backward arch reads as an actual stretch.
Fewer, larger pine trees in the background keep the window view calm rather than busy.
Palette: Chocolate Brown, Icy Blue, Cream, Sage Green
Keep the quiet mood going with a couple sharing one blanket on a snowy balcony, a scene about two bodies merging into a single calm shape under one blanket. Paint both figures seated close together first, then the blanket draped over both as one continuous shape rather than two separate ones, so the pair reads as a unit rather than two people who happen to be sitting near each other.
Add the balcony railing and a hint of snowy view behind them last, kept low in contrast so it does not pull attention away from the couple.
If the two figures look disconnected, check where the blanket meets each shoulder, it should overlap both bodies by roughly the same amount so neither person looks left out of it.
A single steaming mug held between them is a nice small warm detail if you want one extra focal point.
Palette: Chocolate Brown, Cream, Icy Blue, Cherry Red
Add a small narrative beat with a girl in a sage coat posting a letter in a snowy mailbox, a compact scene that turns on one clear gesture of the arm. Paint the mailbox first as a simple rounded shape capped with snow, then her figure standing beside it, arm extended toward the slot with a small pale envelope held between two fingers.
Keep the envelope small and plain, a simple cream rectangle, painted last so it sits crisply on top of both her sleeve and the mailbox slot without any muddling of edges.
If her reaching arm looks awkward, check the angle at the shoulder, it should tilt slightly forward and down toward the slot rather than straight out, which is a far more natural reach.
A red mailbox instead of the usual tone is an easy way to add a cherry accent if the scene feels too muted otherwise.
Palette: Sage Green, Chocolate Brown, Cream, Cherry Red
Close the set out with a man and his dog watching the snow from a cafe window table, a calm final scene that pulls together everything practiced across the earlier ideas: a glass pane with a slightly muted view beyond it, a simple seated figure, and a dog settled quietly at his feet. Paint the window and snowy street beyond it first, kept low contrast, then his figure seated at the small table with a cup in front of him, then the dog curled beneath the table last.
Vary this one next time by swapping the cafe for a train window or a car, the same muted-glass trick works in any scene where someone watches winter from a warm interior.
If the window view competes with the figure, dial back its saturation further, the whole point of this composition is that the inside stays the warmest, clearest part of the page.
One small steaming cup on the table is enough warmth to finish the mood without adding anything else.
For more café mornings in this same vein, the coffee illustration ideas collect plenty of window-table scenes to try next.
Palette: Chocolate Brown, Cream, Icy Blue, Cherry Red

Frequently Asked Questions
What paint works best for this flat, modern winter illustration style?
Gouache works best because it dries matte and opaque, giving the crisp flat shapes this style needs. Acrylic diluted slightly is a close substitute if gouache is not available.
Do I need to be good at drawing people to try these ideas?
No, because the figures stay simple: rounded coat shapes, dot eyes, a short dash for a mouth. Focus on silhouette and pose rather than facial detail or anatomy.
How do I keep the edges this crisp without a steady hand?
Use masking tape along straight edges like doorways and windows, and let each shape dry fully before painting the next one on top. Painting wet into wet is the main cause of blurred edges.
What paper should I use for gouache winter scenes?
Smooth illustration board or heavy mixed media paper works best since it keeps gouache edges sharp rather than letting them feather into the fibers of rougher watercolor paper.
How do I keep a consistent color palette across a whole series?
Mix a larger batch of your core colors, chocolate brown, icy blue, cream, cherry red and sage, before starting, then use that same mixed batch across every piece in the set.
