These christmas diorama ideas give you 19 little rooms to print, cut and glue onto handmade cards or tuck into a junk journal spread: a stocking cottage, a gingerbread post office, a gift box workshop, a stable with the holy family, and plenty more cosy winter scenes along the way. Each one opens like a tiny stage with a heroine busy at her task, small props to discover, and a snowy view through a back window.
Print on matte cardstock at actual size, then cut each diorama out with a thin white edge left around the scene so the lines stay crisp. From there you can glue them flat onto a card front, raise the inner layer on foam dots for depth, or trim them smaller for a journal pocket.
Using these images: free for personal projects such as printing, coloring, cards, journals and gifts. Handmade items that include them may be sold up to 30 pieces per design. More than that is commercial use and is not permitted, and neither is selling or sharing the images themselves or passing them off as your own. Please ask before any other use.
Cosy Cottage Scenes
A stocking shape opens into a tiny cottage room where an elderly woman in a knitted shawl hangs candy canes on a small tabletop tree, her cat batting at a loose ribbon by her feet.
Snowy pine trees fill the back window, and the warm red of the stocking makes a lovely frame for a card meant for a grandmother or a favourite aunt this season.
Settling into the curve of a woven log basket, an elderly woman knits a long scarf by the stove while a kettle warms beside her, a ball of yarn rolling gently near her chair.
A young couple tuck under a plaid blanket inside a sleigh shaped room, their cocoa mugs steaming between them while parcels pile up at their feet, ready for a card that suits a daughter and her new husband or any couple on your list this year.
A moonlit forest glows through the back window, giving the whole scene a hushed, travelling feeling perfect for a journal spread about winter journeys.
Workshops and Kitchens
Sorting parcels into neat stacks beside a warm stove, a young woman in an apron works through a sack of letters inside a gingerbread shaped post office, with a sleigh flying past the moon in the little window behind her.
An elderly couple lean over a workbench painting wooden toys by lamplight, a kettle warming on the stove nearby, while a snowy village glows in the window behind them.
This one pairs beautifully with the post office diorama for a matching set of two cards, one for a grandfather who loves toy trains and one for the grandmother who always wraps the gifts.
Lifting a tray of gingerbread from the oven, an elderly woman in a floured apron works beside a large mixing bowl while a lit Christmas market twinkles through the window behind her.
Polishing rocking horses and small drums side by side, an elderly couple keep their little toy shop glowing for the season, with a snowy street framed in the window behind them, a scene that would anchor a junk journal spread about an old toymaker’s shop on a winter afternoon.
Filling paper cones with sugar plums and twists of ribbon candy, a young woman tends her sweet shop counter while a snowy market square spreads out behind her in the little back window, a cheerful detail to colour by hand with pink and gold pencil if you like.
Parlor and Fireside Scenes
Decorating a cake with sprigs of holly beside a crackling fire, a young woman works carefully at a small parlor table while carolers gather in the snow behind her, a soft scene that would suit a card for a sister or a close friend who loves to bake for the season.
Try pairing it with the cookie jar kitchen diorama for a matching pair of baking themed cards, one for the cake maker and one for the gingerbread baker in your family.
Trimming a tiny tree with loops of garland, an elderly woman stands inside a glass bauble opened like a little stage, snowflakes drifting steadily over the fields behind her.
An elderly couple settle into armchairs reading Christmas cards by a fireplace strung with stockings, a church spire rising quietly in the window behind them, a gentle pairing for a card sent to parents or grandparents who have been together for many years.
Kneeling beside an old trunk, an elderly woman unpacks glass baubles and a star topper one by one, each wrapped in tissue, while a snowy rooftop view stretches out through the small attic window behind her.
Everyday Winter Scenes
Wrapping presents on a soft rug beside a sleeping dog, a young woman works quietly inside a mitten shaped cabin, a frozen pond with skaters stretching out in the window behind her, a scene worth printing twice so you can cut the inner layer free and raise it on foam dots for extra depth on the card front.
Greeting guests at the door with a tray of mince pies and a lit lantern, a young woman stands framed by a wreath shaped opening, a sleigh waiting quietly in the lane behind her, a warm choice for a card that doubles as a holiday invitation.
Serving marshmallow cocoa to an elderly friend at a tiny cafe table, a young woman balances a tray between them while snow falls past the street lamps in the window behind, a gentle scene for a card sent between a granddaughter and grandmother who share a love of hot chocolate.
Keep it simple for a five minute card: glue the whole sheet flat onto kraft cardstock with a thin red mat, no extra layers needed.
Nativity Scenes
Arranging poinsettias along the pews, an elderly woman moves quietly through a small bell tower chapel, a snowy churchyard spreading out through the window behind her, a fitting scene for a card that leans toward the quieter, more reflective side of the season.
Lighting the candles of an Advent wreath beside a hymn stand, a young woman keeps watch inside a lantern shaped chapel, a starlit valley unfolding through the window behind her.
Opened at the front like a true stage, this stable holds Mary and Joseph kneeling together beside the manger, a lamb and a donkey resting close by while a starry hillside glows behind them, a quiet centerpiece for a nativity themed card or the opening page of a Christmas junk journal spread.
Opening an ornate treasure chest reveals a second stable scene, where three kings kneel to offer their gifts to the holy family gathered at the manger, a shining star glowing over the desert behind them, making a striking match for the first stable diorama if you want to send a pair of nativity cards this year.
What to Do Next
Print the dioramas that suit your card list first, start with the stable or the post office if you are new to this, and keep the rest ready for next year’s batch of cards.
Frequently Asked Questions
What paper works best for printing these dioramas?
Matte white cardstock around 200 to 250 gsm works best for these dioramas. It holds fine linework crisply, takes colour pencil or glitter glue well, and feels sturdy once cut and glued onto a card front.
What printer settings give the sharpest result?
Print at actual size with the highest quality or photo setting your printer offers. Turning off any automatic scaling keeps the dioramas true to the sizes shown, which matters if you plan to pair two sheets together.
How do you make a diorama look three dimensional on a card?
Print the sheet twice, then cut the inner scene away from one copy and raise it on foam adhesive dots over the matching background on the other. This lifts the heroine and nearby props forward while the back window stays flat.
What card size suits these dioramas?
A standard A2 or 5 by 7 inch card base suits most of these dioramas comfortably. Trim the printed sheet with a thin white border left around the edge, then mat it on kraft or cream cardstock before gluing it to the card front.
Can these dioramas go into a junk journal instead of a card?
Yes, trimmed smaller they work well as a journal pocket or a focal image on a spread. Pair one with a strip of washi tape or a lace border to tie it into the rest of the page.
