34 Japan Drawing Ideas of Snowy Kyoto Temples, Onsen Towns and Winter Ramen Stalls

3

Every japan drawing idea here starts from the same place: a quiet winter scene you can carry home in a sketchbook, snow falling on something ordinary and beautiful at once. Think steam rising from a ramen stall, a red gate half buried in white, a cat watching snow from a wooden veranda. None of it needs a trip, just a fineliner, a little watercolor and an afternoon.

Below you will find thirty four full page scenes moving from Kyoto temples to onsen towns to Hokkaido snowfields, each one built to finish in one sitting. Work through them in order if you like, easiest first, or jump straight to the one that is already in your head.

Start the whole sketchbook with a snowy Kyoto temple roof, since its shapes are simple and forgiving for a first page. Pencil in the roofline loosely first: a long curved ridge, a few overlapping tiers, and a small red gate sitting low in the foreground to anchor the scene. Ink the roof edges and tile lines with your fineliner before touching any paint, keeping the lines a little uneven so the drawing stays relaxed rather than architectural.

The place this goes wrong is the roof curve, which can end up too stiff if you draw it in one pass. Sketch it in pencil first and check that both slopes answer each other, roughly the same length and angle on either side, before you commit in ink.

Wash the roof tiles in a warm grey, leave patches of bare cream paper for snow sitting on top, and drop vermilion into the gate while the paper is still just damp so the edge softens. If you do not have a red that reads as true vermilion, a mix of cadmium red and a touch of orange gets close.

Finish with a light grey wash across the sky, keeping it thin enough that the paper still glows through as winter light.

Move from temple rooftops to something warmer: a steaming outdoor onsen bath tucked among snow covered rocks. Block in the pool shape first with a loose oval in pencil, then build the rocks around its edge with angular fineliner strokes, letting some rocks disappear under drifts of snow left as bare paper.

Steam is the heart of this one, and the usual mistake is drawing it as a hard cloud shape. Keep your steam as a few soft curving lines left mostly unpainted, with just a whisper of pale grey wash dragged upward so it reads as rising rather than sitting still.

Wash the water in a warm teal, darker at the far edge of the pool and lighter near the viewer, which gives it the sense of depth and heat. Snow on the rocks stays as untouched cream paper with only a thin blue grey shadow along one side of each rock to show the snow has form.

If teal feels tricky to mix, a simple blue green straight from the tube works fine for a first attempt. Keep the whole wash loose, since a tight painted onsen loses the steam entirely.

Palette: Teal Blue,Payne’s Grey,Raw Umber,Cream Paper

Try this scene from a slightly raised angle looking down into the pool. It shows more of the water surface and makes the steam read more clearly against the dark rocks behind it.

Bring some street life onto the page with a tiny ramen stall, its red curtain hanging over a narrow doorway and steam curling into the cold air. Pencil the stall as a simple box shape first, a counter at the front and a short awning above, then ink the structure before adding the curtain so the proportions stay honest.

Hang the curtain in two or three vertical panels with a soft fineliner line, letting the bottom edge wave slightly rather than sit flat, since fabric in cold air never hangs perfectly straight. This is the detail that makes the stall feel alive rather than drawn from a photograph.

Wash the curtain in a strong red, the awning in warm wood brown, and leave the steam as untouched paper with just a faint grey edge to separate it from the sky behind. Snow collects along the awning edge and at the base of the stall as small patches of bare paper.

If your red runs too orange, deepen it with a touch of Payne’s grey rather than black, which keeps the curtain rich instead of muddy.

Snow lanterns make a lovely next page, since they are really just a row of rounded white mounds with a soft glow inside each one, simple shapes that still carry real atmosphere. Draw the path first in pencil as a gentle curve leading into the distance, then place five or six lantern mounds along it, smaller as they recede toward the back of the page.

Use perspective here: set your eye level low, near the bottom third of the page, so the nearest lanterns loom larger and the path seems to stretch away under a darkening sky. A low light source behind the furthest lanterns throws warm glow forward onto the snow in front of them.

Ink only the lantern openings and a few guiding path edges, leaving the rounded mounds themselves almost entirely as bare paper. Wash a pale warm yellow glow inside each opening, then a cool blue grey wash across the evening sky and the shadow side of the path.

Keep the wash thin on the snow mounds themselves, just enough blue in the shadows to show their roundness. A damp brush lifting a touch of color back out works well if the blue goes on too dark.

A ryokan entrance gives you a quiet, close up scene: a low wooden step, a pair of slippers left waiting, and a small snowy garden glimpsed through the doorway. Pencil the doorway frame first as a simple rectangle, then the step and slippers at the base, keeping the slippers small and slightly angled toward each other.

Build the wood grain with a few loose vertical fineliner lines rather than trying to render every plank, and let the garden beyond the doorway stay soft and underdrawn so the slippers in front read as the clear focus.

Wash the wood in warm raw umber, the slippers in a muted indigo or soft green, and the garden glimpsed beyond in pale grey blue to push it back into the distance. Snow sits on the step edge and garden stones as untouched paper with a faint blue shadow line beneath each clump.

If the interior of the ryokan behind the doorway feels like too much to draw, leave it almost entirely as a soft grey wash with no detail at all. A dark doorway with pale slippers in front of it reads just as well, and it is honestly the easier version to finish.

The torii gate is one of the most recognizable images in Japan drawing, so give it a page of its own standing alone in deep snow with nothing else to compete with it. Pencil the two upright posts first, checking they are the same height and evenly spaced, then add the crossbeams above, the top one slightly wider than the one beneath it.

Use proportion here: the gap between the two posts should roughly equal the height of one post, which keeps the whole structure looking balanced rather than too narrow or too wide. Measure with your pencil held at arm’s length if the spacing looks uncertain once inked.

Ink the gate with a steady, slightly thicker line than the rest of the scene, since the torii is the subject and deserves to read first. Wash it in strong vermilion, darker in the shadowed underside of each beam, and build the snow around its base in soft mounds of bare paper edged with pale blue shadow.

Keep the background almost empty, just a thin wash of grey sky and a few distant trees, so the red gate stands clearly against the white.

Palette: Vermilion,Payne’s Grey,Cerulean Blue,Cream Paper

Add a figure to the sketchbook with a woman carrying a paper umbrella along a narrow Gion lane, snow settling on the wooden buildings either side. Pencil her first as a simple standing form, shoulders narrow, the umbrella tilted slightly to one side above her head, before adding the lane around her.

Keep her figure loose rather than detailed: a few confident fineliner lines for the kimono’s fall, a curved line for the umbrella’s edge, and no attempt at a face beyond a soft suggestion of hair. The lane itself narrows slightly toward the back of the page, which pulls the eye past her into the distance.

Wash the umbrella in a warm red or soft ochre, her kimono in deep indigo, and the lane buildings in muted warm greys either side. Snow collects on the rooftops and lane edges as bare paper with the faintest blue shadow.

If figures feel difficult, simplify her even further into a dark silhouette shape beneath the umbrella, with no inner detail at all. From a short distance this reads just as clearly and keeps the whole page feeling calm.

Shift from street scenes to something stiller with a zen rock garden, its raked gravel lines just visible beneath a fresh layer of snow. Pencil in a handful of larger rocks first, grouped unevenly rather than in a neat row, then add the raked lines around them as long, gently curving pencil strokes before inking.

Ink only where the raked lines emerge from under the snow, leaving most of the gravel as bare cream paper so the snow cover feels convincing. The rocks themselves get a firmer ink outline with a little texture at their base, since they are the only solid dark shapes against all that white.

Wash the rocks in warm grey brown, and add the thinnest blue grey wash along the shadow side of each raked line, just enough to show it still has a groove beneath the snow. Keep a wooden fence or wall at the back of the garden in soft warm brown to frame the whole scene.

This page works beautifully as a quick ten minute sketch if you keep the rocks to two or three shapes and only hint at a few raked lines. Give it closer to forty minutes and you can trace the full pattern of lines curving around every rock for a much calmer, more meditative page.

Palette: Raw Umber,Payne’s Grey,Cerulean Blue,Cream Paper

Shirakawa-go gives you one of the most satisfying roof shapes in this whole list: steep thatched gables buried almost to the eaves in snow. Pencil the main farmhouse first as a tall triangle on a simple rectangle base, then add one or two smaller houses behind it at a slightly reduced scale to suggest the village continuing into the distance.

Build the thatch texture with short, diagonal fineliner strokes along the roofline only, leaving the lower half of each roof as bare paper where the snow has piled up thickest. This contrast between textured thatch peeking through and smooth snow beneath it is what makes the roofs read correctly.

Wash the exposed thatch in warm straw brown, the walls below in soft weathered grey, and bank deep blue grey shadow along the base of each house where the snow sits thickest. A few bare trees in the background, kept as simple dark branches, add scale without extra detail.

If the steep roof angle looks wrong once inked, compare it against the roof of the house beside it: both gables should lean at roughly the same angle, since a real village repeats its roofline across every building.

Palette: Raw Umber,Payne’s Grey,Cerulean Blue,Cream Paper

Bring in some wildlife with a red crowned crane caught mid dance across a snowy Hokkaido field, wings half lifted and one leg raised. Pencil the body first as a simple curved S shape from head to tail, then add the long legs and the wing lifted on one side, checking that the neck curve and leg length feel believably long and slender before you ink.

The crane’s edges are the trick here: keep the wingtips and tail feathers drawn with quick, slightly broken fineliner strokes rather than one smooth outline, since real feathers catch the light unevenly and a hard clean edge makes the bird look stiff.

Wash the body in the palest grey wash, almost white, leave the wing tips and tail in near black, and drop a small bright red at the crown of the head, the one true color accent in the whole bird. The snowy field behind stays nearly empty, just a thin blue grey wash low across the page to suggest ground meeting sky.

If you do not have a true crimson for the crown, a small dot of straight cadmium red works fine, since it only needs to cover a tiny area.

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Vermilion,Cerulean Blue,Cream Paper

A vending machine glowing on an empty snowy side street is a wonderfully quiet, modern contrast to the temples and gates earlier in the sketchbook. Pencil the machine as a simple tall rectangle first, slightly narrower at the top, then rough in the narrow street around it with a couple of buildings fading into the dark.

Light is the whole idea here: the machine is the only light source on the page, so keep every other part of the street in deep shadow and let the glow spill out in a soft rectangle onto the snow in front of it. That single warm patch of light against all the cold blue around it is what sells the scene.

Wash the machine’s glow in pale warm yellow or soft cyan, the street and buildings in deep indigo and Payne’s grey, and leave a soft halo of lighter wash in the snow directly below the glow. Falling snow can be added last as a few small flicks of a dry brush loaded with white gouache, or simply left as tiny untouched dots of paper.

If you want to skip rendering any building detail at all, a vending machine glowing against a flat dark wash of indigo still reads perfectly well on its own.

You Will Need

• white gouache or white gel pen for snow flecks

Palette: Indigo,Payne’s Grey,Pale Yellow,Cream Paper

Keep the street food theme going with a steaming oden pot sitting on a small stall counter, skewers and simmering broth catching the last of the daylight. Pencil the pot first as a wide shallow cylinder, then add two or three skewers propped along its rim and a small stove or burner glow beneath it.

The steam rising from the pot is the detail to get right, and the usual mistake is making it too solid. Draw it as a handful of loose wavy lines rising and thinning as they go up, with only the faintest grey wash behind them so the paper still shows through as warm vapor.

Wash the broth in deep warm brown, the pot itself in dull metal grey, and let a little orange glow from the burner wash up onto the underside of the pot and the stall counter. Snow falls gently in the background, kept as a flat pale grey wash with a scatter of tiny untouched dots.

If metal textures feel fiddly, a flat wash of grey with one or two highlight lines left as bare paper along the pot’s rim is enough to suggest it without extra rendering.

Palette: Raw Umber,Payne’s Grey,Vermilion,Cream Paper

Give the sketchbook a skyline page with a five story pagoda rising above a cluster of snowy rooftops, its tiers stacking up toward a thin spire. Pencil the pagoda first as a simple stack of five shrinking rectangles, checking that each tier is a little narrower than the one below it before adding the curved eaves on each level.

Place your eye level low on the page, near the bottom, so the pagoda appears to tower upward and the smaller rooftops around its base feel appropriately distant beneath it. This low viewpoint is what gives the page its sense of height.

Ink the pagoda’s tiers with a firm line and the surrounding rooftops much more loosely, just a few quick shapes with snow sitting on each ridge. Wash the pagoda in warm red brown, the distant rooftops in cool pale grey to push them back, and the sky in a soft wash that lightens near the pagoda’s spire.

If stacking five even tiers feels tricky, four still reads clearly as a pagoda, so do not be afraid to simplify the count if the proportions are getting cramped.

Palette: Raw Umber,Vermilion,Payne’s Grey,Cream Paper

A bathhouse curtain caught mid flap in a cold wind makes a small, lively scene after the stillness of the pagoda. Pencil the doorway frame first, then the curtain hanging across it in two or three panels, angling the bottom edges as though a gust has just lifted them.

Movement is the whole point here, so draw the curtain’s edges with quick confident fineliner strokes that curve rather than hang straight, and add two or three short flicked lines trailing off one panel to suggest the wind still pushing at it.

Wash the curtain in deep indigo or warm brown, the doorway behind it in near black shadow so the curtain stands forward clearly, and snow gathers along the top of the doorframe as untouched paper. A few flakes caught mid air near the curtain’s moving edge, left as tiny dots of bare paper, finish the sense of wind and cold.

If straight curtain panels look stiff once drawn, redraw just the bottom third of each panel with a slight wave, since that is the part that catches the eye first.

Palette: Indigo,Raw Umber,Payne’s Grey,Cream Paper

Come indoors for a warm, cozy page: a kotatsu table with a quilt draped over its sides, a small bowl of mandarins on top, and a cat curled beneath the quilt with just its tail peeking out. Pencil the table first as a simple low rectangle, then the quilt draped generously over each side before adding the mandarin bowl and the cat’s tail.

Texture matters most here, since the quilt should feel soft against the hard tabletop. Use a dry brush loaded with only a little pale color dragged lightly over the quilt’s surface to leave a broken, fabric like texture, rather than a flat smooth wash that would look more like a tablecloth than a padded quilt.

Wash the quilt in a warm dusty red or soft navy pattern, the mandarins in bright orange with a touch of leaf green at their stems, and the tabletop in warm honey brown. Leave the cat’s tail mostly as bare paper with just a few soft grey stripes.

If a full cat under the quilt feels like too much, the tail and one paw peeking out is plenty to suggest the whole animal curled up warm inside.

Palette: Vermilion,Raw Umber,Sap Green,Cream Paper

Return to the temple grounds with a single stone lantern wearing a neat cap of snow, standing quietly among a few garden plants. Pencil the lantern’s stacked sections first, a wide base, a narrower middle post, then the lantern housing and its peaked roof on top, keeping each section simple and blocky.

Measure the lantern against itself before inking: the roof cap should sit roughly as wide as the housing beneath it, just slightly overhanging on each side, which is what gives a stone lantern its familiar silhouette rather than looking like a random stack of shapes.

Ink the stone texture with a few short cracks and rough edges rather than a perfectly smooth outline, since real stone lanterns weather unevenly over the years. Wash the stone in cool grey green, leave the snow cap as bare paper with the faintest blue shadow on its underside, and add a soft wash of moss green at the lantern’s base where snow has not quite settled.

A little greenery like a trimmed shrub or low grass nearby, in muted sap green, gives the lantern some garden context without adding much extra drawing.

Palette: Sap Green,Payne’s Grey,Cerulean Blue,Cream Paper

Scale up for a lively page: giant snow sculptures filling a city park, with tiny visitors strolling between them to show just how large they really are. Pencil one large sculpture first, whether an animal, a castle shape or an abstract form, then add a second smaller one behind it before placing a few tiny figures at the base of each.

Scale is everything in this scene, so draw your figures last and keep them deliberately small, no more than a fraction of the sculpture’s height, since it is the size contrast between tiny person and enormous snow shape that makes the whole page read correctly.

Ink the sculptures with soft rounded outlines and very little interior detail, since snow sculptures are smooth by nature, then wash them in the palest blue white with deeper blue shadow carved into their folds and curves. The figures stay as simple dark silhouettes in warm coat colors, bright enough to stand out against all that pale blue.

If you are short on time, one large sculpture and three or four tiny figures is plenty. A crowded park scene with many sculptures takes far longer and is not necessary to tell the story.

Palette: Cerulean Blue,Payne’s Grey,Vermilion,Cream Paper

Widen out into a full hot spring town street, visitors wandering between wooden buildings in loose robes while snow falls steadily around them. Pencil the street in simple one point perspective, buildings lining both sides and narrowing toward a vanishing point near the center of the page, then add three or four small figures walking at different distances along it.

Keep the nearest figure larger and more detailed, a loose robe shape and simple sandals, while the figures further down the street shrink and simplify into little more than dark silhouettes, which is what makes the perspective believable.

Wash the buildings in warm wood tones with deep indigo shadow under each eave, the robes in soft pastel blues, pinks and creams, and let falling snow sit as scattered untouched dots across the whole page, denser near the top where the sky is most visible.

If straight perspective lines feel daunting, a very light pencil guide drawn with a ruler before inking freehand over it keeps the street convincing without the ink line itself looking too rigid.

Palette: Raw Umber,Indigo,Pale Pink,Cream Paper

Step inside for a sushi counter scene, a chef working quietly behind the bar while snow falls past the window just beyond him. Pencil the counter first as a long horizontal shape, then the chef standing behind it, shoulders square, hands occupied with something small on the board in front of him.

Light comes from two places here and that is worth planning before you ink: warm light from inside the restaurant falling across the counter and the chef, and cool blue daylight from the window behind him. Let the warm light dominate the chef and counter while the window stays noticeably cooler and dimmer in tone.

Wash the counter and chef’s apron in warm cream and soft grey, a few simple pieces of sushi on the board in small dashes of color, and the window behind in pale cool blue with a scatter of tiny untouched dots for falling snow. Keep his face very simple, just a suggestion of features, since the counter and the window light are really the stars of this page.

If drawing a full figure feels like a stretch today, show just his hands and the counter, with the window and snow still doing most of the storytelling.

Palette: Raw Umber,Cerulean Blue,Vermilion,Cream Paper

After the warmth of the sushi counter, cool the page down with a koi pond, its stepping stones dusted with snow and a few koi still visible moving slowly beneath the surface. Pencil the pond’s outline first as a loose irregular shape, then place three or four stepping stones crossing it before adding the koi shapes drifting beneath the water.

Edges are the trick with water: paint the pond’s surface wet, then while it is still damp, lift a little color back out with a dry brush or tissue along one side to suggest the ripple and reflection of light on the surface, rather than leaving the water as one flat tone.

Wash the koi in soft orange and white, kept slightly blurred under the water’s blue grey wash so they read as swimming beneath the surface rather than floating on top. The stepping stones stay mostly bare paper with a thin cap of snow on each one and a dark shadow underside.

If your first wet in wet attempt dries too flat, a second thin glaze of pale blue brushed quickly over just one section once the first layer is dry can bring back some of that rippled feeling.

Palette: Cerulean Blue,Vermilion,Payne’s Grey,Cream Paper

If koi colors and water ripples are a subject you want to spend more time on, a whole separate sketchbook page devoted to koi fish painting is worth exploring next.

The bamboo grove is one of the quieter, more graphic pages in this sketchbook, built almost entirely from tall vertical lines dusted lightly with snow. Pencil just a handful of guide lines first, marking where the thickest stalks will sit, spaced unevenly rather than in a neat row, since real bamboo never grows perfectly spaced.

Ink each stalk as a confident single vertical line with small horizontal notches marking the natural joints every so often up its length. Vary the pressure of your pen as you draw each line, pressing a little harder near the base and lighter toward the top, which gives the stalks a sense of real weight and height.

Wash the stalks in soft green, darker where they overlap and pale where they catch the light, and leave patches of untouched paper along the tops of the leaves and joints where snow has settled. Keep the background almost entirely bare paper with just a thin grey wash to suggest grove depth beyond the nearest stalks.

If evenly spaced stalks are hard to judge by eye, lightly mark a few pencil dots across the page first at varied distances, then build each stalk up from one of those dots.

Palette: Sap Green,Payne’s Grey,Raw Umber,Cream Paper

Warm the sketchbook back up with a cozy ski lodge, its windows glowing against deep powder snow piled high around the walls. Pencil the lodge as a simple pitched roof over a low rectangle, then add two or three small windows glowing warm against the dark wood, with snow mounded thick along the roofline and against the base of the walls.

Snow depth is the whole personality of this scene, so draw the drifts generously, rounding up against the door and window ledges rather than sitting as a thin flat line along the ground. A few bent evergreen branches nearby, weighed down with their own load of snow, help sell just how deep the fall has been.

Wash the lodge’s wood in deep warm brown, the windows in glowing pale yellow, and build the snowdrifts in layers of bare paper and pale blue grey shadow to show their rounded form. A faint wash of falling snow across the whole sky finishes the feeling of heavy winter weather.

If you would like to sketch more scenes like this one with warm lit windows against the cold, the ideas in this Christmas scene drawing roundup follow a very similar mood.

Palette: Raw Umber,Pale Yellow,Payne’s Grey,Cream Paper

Bring a small, cheerful figure onto the page: a girl in a thick scarf holding up a skewer of grilled mochi, steam still rising from it in the cold air. Pencil her first as a simple standing shape, shoulders slightly hunched against the cold, one arm raised with the skewer held near her face, before adding the scarf wrapped loosely around her neck.

Keep her expression and features extremely simple, just a hint of rosy cheeks and a small smile, since the warmth of the scene comes more from the steam and the color of the scarf than from any detailed face.

Wash the mochi in soft toasted brown with a few darker grill marks, the scarf in a bright warm red or mustard yellow, and her coat in a muted neutral tone so the scarf and mochi stand out as the brightest points on the page. Steam rises from the mochi as a few soft curving lines left mostly as bare paper.

If you have never drawn a figure holding something out from their body before, pencil the skewer and hand first as a separate small shape, then build the rest of the arm and body around it, rather than trying to attach the hand last.

Palette: Vermilion,Raw Umber,Pale Yellow,Cream Paper

Settle into a calmer page with a small tea house sitting beside a moss garden now blanketed in fresh snow. Pencil the tea house first as a low simple building with a modest sloped roof, then add the moss garden stretching beside it, marked only by a few larger rocks and a shrub or two poking through the snow.

The moss garden is the interesting texture challenge here, since beneath the snow it would normally show rich uneven green. Use a dry brush technique over the small patches of exposed ground, dragging a half loaded brush lightly across the paper so the green breaks up into a rough, mossy texture rather than a flat smooth wash.

Wash the tea house in warm soft brown, the exposed moss patches in deep mossy green with the dry brush texture, and leave the bulk of the garden as bare paper with pale blue shadow to show the snow’s gentle rise and fall over hidden shapes beneath it.

If the dry brush technique comes out too scratchy on your first try, blot the brush lightly on scrap paper before touching your sketchbook, since even a small amount of extra water flattens the texture back out.

Palette: Sap Green,Raw Umber,Cerulean Blue,Cream Paper

Mount Fuji earns a wide, calm page of its own, its snowy peak reflected faintly in a still lake with a single small rowboat resting near the shore. Pencil the mountain’s silhouette first using its distinctive gentle slope on one side and steeper slope on the other, checking the peak sits roughly a third of the way in from one edge of the page rather than dead center, which keeps the composition more interesting.

Keep the horizon line low, well below the mountain’s base, so Fuji dominates the upper two thirds of the page while the lake and rowboat occupy a much smaller, calmer space beneath it.

Wash the mountain in the palest blue grey with a darker band near its base where the slope meets lower hills, and leave the snow cap itself as bare paper. The lake gets a soft mirrored wash of the same pale blue, slightly disturbed near the rowboat to suggest gentle ripples, with the small boat itself kept as a simple dark silhouette.

If symmetry worries you, Fuji’s two slopes are never perfectly even in real life, so a slightly uneven mountain actually looks more convincing than a textbook perfect triangle.

Palette: Cerulean Blue,Payne’s Grey,Raw Umber,Cream Paper

Return to street level with a narrow Takayama street, tall wooden merchant houses leaning close together under a steady fall of snow. Pencil the street in a simple one point perspective again, buildings on both sides narrowing toward a soft vanishing point, their upper stories jutting out slightly over the street below.

Vary the roof heights and widths slightly from building to building as you ink, since a street of perfectly identical houses looks far less convincing than one with small natural differences in age and size between neighbors.

Wash the wooden facades in warm deep brown, darker in the lower stories where shadow collects beneath the overhanging upper floors, and let snow sit along every window ledge and roofline as bare paper edged with pale blue. A soft grey wash across the whole upper half of the page suggests the snow still falling.

If a full street of detailed buildings feels like too much for one sitting, draw only the three or four houses nearest the viewer in full detail and let the rest of the street dissolve into loose grey shapes further back.

Palette: Raw Umber,Payne’s Grey,Cerulean Blue,Cream Paper

An arched garden bridge gives the sketchbook a graceful curve to balance out all the straight rooflines earlier in the book, its handrail capped neatly with fresh snow. Pencil the arch first as a single smooth curve spanning the page, then add the railing posts evenly spaced along its length before any other detail.

Check the arch’s two ends land at roughly the same height on the page before inking, since even a slight mismatch makes the whole bridge look like it is sinking on one side. A light horizontal pencil guide across both ends helps catch this early.

Ink the railing posts with slightly varied spacing rather than a perfectly mechanical row, and wash the bridge itself in warm red or weathered grey depending on whether you picture it freshly painted or old stone. Snow caps each post and the top of the arch as untouched paper, with a thin pale blue shadow line beneath each cap.

A still pond or stream glimpsed beneath the bridge, kept as a simple pale blue wash with a hint of the bridge’s reflection, finishes the page without needing much extra drawing.

Palette: Vermilion,Payne’s Grey,Cerulean Blue,Cream Paper

Widen out onto the ice for a village of small ice fishing tents scattered across a frozen Hokkaido lake, each one a simple bright shape against all that flat white. Pencil a handful of tent shapes first, varying their size and angle slightly, then add a few tiny figures or fishing holes near one or two of them to suggest activity.

Perspective matters here even without buildings: place the tents at different sizes across the page, larger near the bottom and smaller toward the top, to suggest the flat expanse of ice stretching back toward distant hills.

Wash each tent in a different bright color, orange, blue, deep red, so the little village feels cheerful and varied against the pale ice, and leave the ice itself almost entirely as bare paper with only the faintest grey blue wash for subtle texture and a few thin cracks drawn in ink. Distant hills at the very top of the page stay soft and pale to keep them clearly far away.

If drawing many tiny figures near the tents feels fussy, a single small figure beside the nearest tent is enough to give the whole scene a sense of scale and life.

Palette: Vermilion,Cerulean Blue,Payne’s Grey,Cream Paper

Bring some warmth and personality to the page with a shiba inu trotting along a snowy street in a bright red knit sweater, ears perked and tail curled high. Pencil the body first as a simple compact oval, then the legs, curled tail and pointed ears, checking the ears sit roughly level with each other before inking.

Keep the fur texture simple with short quick fineliner strokes only along the edges of the body and tail, rather than covering the whole dog in lines, since shiba fur is short and dense and reads better with suggestion than with heavy detail.

Wash the coat in warm orange red, the sweater in a brighter true red with a simple ribbed pattern suggested by a few short parallel lines, and leave paws and chest in pale cream. Snow falls lightly around the dog as scattered dots of bare paper against a soft grey street behind.

If orange and red together feel too similar in tone, cool the sweater slightly toward a deeper berry red so it still contrasts clearly against the dog’s warmer coat.

Palette: Vermilion,Raw Umber,Payne’s Grey,Cream Paper

If dogs in winter knits are a favorite subject, the ideas in this cozy winter morning drawing list make a nice companion page to this one.

A plum tree beginning to blossom through late snow is a lovely sign of the coming season, its branches still bare but dotted here and there with the first small flowers. Pencil the trunk and main branches first as a few strong angular lines, then add finer twigs branching off before placing the blossoms only at the very tips.

Vary the blossom next time by changing how open the flowers are: tight pale buds for an earlier moment in the season, or fully open five petaled blooms for a slightly later one, since plum blossoms open gradually rather than all at once.

Wash the trunk and branches in deep warm brown with a hint of grey, dab small dots of soft pink directly onto the twig tips for the blossoms rather than painting each one with an outline first, and let patches of snow sit along the thicker branches as bare paper. A small shrine gate or stone lantern glimpsed softly in the background gives the tree a sense of place without much extra drawing.

If pink blossoms disappear too much against the cream paper, deepen a few of them with a touch more pigment so the nearest blooms stand out slightly brighter than those further along the branch.

Palette: Raw Umber,Pale Pink,Payne’s Grey,Cream Paper

Close out the quieter pages with a cat sitting on a wooden veranda, watching snow drift down into a small garden just beyond the edge of the roof. Pencil the cat first as a simple rounded sitting shape, tail curled around its front paws, then add the veranda boards beneath it and a hint of garden beyond.

Fur texture is the fun detail here: use short flicked fineliner strokes only along the cat’s outer silhouette and down its tail, leaving the body mostly smooth, which reads as soft fur without needing to cover the whole shape in lines.

Wash the cat in soft grey with a few darker tabby stripes, the veranda boards in warm honey brown with simple parallel grain lines, and the garden beyond in pale cool grey blue to keep it clearly further back than the cat and the boards. Snow falls steadily in the garden as scattered dots of bare paper against that cool wash.

If sitting cat proportions feel tricky, compare the width of the curled body against the length of the tail, since on most cats they end up surprisingly close in size once curled.

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Raw Umber,Cerulean Blue,Cream Paper

Simplify things with a close, quiet still life: a pair of wooden geta sandals left behind on snowy stepping stones, as though someone has just stepped inside somewhere warm. Pencil the two sandals first, angled slightly toward each other, then the raised wooden teeth beneath each sole before adding the stones they rest on.

This is a small, forgiving subject, so if today is your first attempt at drawing footwear, start with the simple rectangular sole shape and only add the fabric straps once that base shape feels balanced and even on both sandals.

Wash the wood in warm honey brown with a slightly darker tone where the sandals’ teeth meet shadow beneath them, and the straps in a contrasting color like deep red or soft black. Snow sits generously around the stepping stones as bare paper with pale blue shadow tracing each stone’s rounded edge.

If you enjoy small still life subjects like this one, a close look at footwear drawing more broadly in this boots drawing roundup offers plenty more ideas in the same quiet spirit.

Bring the sketchbook onto a train with a bento box resting on a seat tray, snowy hills sliding past the window just beyond it. Pencil the bento box first as a simple rectangle with a few internal divisions, then sketch in two or three small food shapes inside each section before adding the window and hills behind.

Keep the window’s view loose and soft compared to the crisp little box in front, since a sharply detailed landscape would compete with the food for attention. A quick wash of pale blue grey hills with a few scattered trees is plenty.

Wash the bento’s compartments in a cheerful mix of colors, rice as warm cream, a piece of salmon in soft coral, a few greens for vegetables, and the box itself in simple black or red lacquer. The window view stays cool and pale, with snow suggested by a scatter of untouched paper dots drifting past outside.

If the inside divisions of the box feel fiddly to plan, three simple sections, rice, protein and vegetable, is enough to read clearly as a full bento without overcomplicating the drawing.

Finish the sketchbook with a small, quiet moment: a woman sweeping snow from the steps of a tiny shrine, broom angled across the stone in mid stroke. Pencil the shrine steps first as a few simple stacked rectangles, then add her figure beside them, leaning slightly into the broom’s handle with one foot set a little forward of the other.

Give her a sense of motion by drawing the broom’s bristles at a slight angle, caught mid sweep, with a small scatter of displaced snow just ahead of it rather than a neat clean line, which makes the action feel like it is actually happening rather than posed.

Wash her coat in a warm muted color, the broom handle in simple brown, and the shrine steps in cool grey stone with patches of cleared stone showing through beside the still snowy sections. A small shrine gate or lantern in the background, kept soft and simple, finishes the scene without pulling focus from her.

If you have been working through this whole sketchbook, this last quiet page is a good place to pause and look back over every scene together, since the sweeping gesture closes the day’s winter walk the way many such pages do in a travel journal; the ideas in this sketchbook diary roundup are worth returning to for more of this everyday mood.

What to Do Next

Pick whichever page is already pulling at you, whether that is the torii gate standing alone in snow or the whole busy hot spring street, and start with a light pencil layout on cream paper before any ink touches the page. One finished scene today is plenty; the rest of this list will still be here tomorrow.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the easiest way to start a japan drawing of a winter scene?

Start with a single simple subject like the torii gate or stone lantern rather than a full street scene. One strong shape against plain snow builds confidence before you attempt busier compositions with buildings or figures.

Do I need watercolor for these japan drawing ideas or can I use just pencil?

A fineliner alone works fine for every idea here, since the ink carries the whole drawing. Watercolor adds atmosphere and warmth to the snow and lantern glow, but leaving a page as pure line art is a perfectly complete finish too.

How do I keep snow looking like snow and not just blank paper?

Leave snow as untouched cream paper and add only a thin blue grey shadow along one edge of each mound or rooftop. That single shadow line is what gives flat white paper the sense of rounded, settled snow.

What is the best way to draw figures in a Japan winter sketchbook without making them look stiff?

Keep figures loose and slightly simplified, built from a few confident lines rather than tight detail. A dark silhouette shape under an umbrella or robe often reads more naturally than an overworked face or costume.

How long does one of these sketchbook pages usually take to finish?

Most ideas here finish in under an hour once the pencil layout is settled. Simpler subjects like the geta sandals or stone lantern can be done in ten to fifteen minutes if you keep the wash light and quick.
