A shark doodle is the easiest way to get a whole page of grins out of one shape: round nose, triangle fin, a row of wobbly teeth, and suddenly you have a character instead of a predator. Give that shape sunglasses, a teacup, a slice of watermelon or a tiny bow tie and it turns silly fast, which is exactly the point.
Below are 28 sharks, each one small enough to finish in a sitting, built the same simple way every time so you can work through the list without overthinking any single page.
Using these images: free for personal projects such as printing, coloring, cards, journals and gifts. Handmade items that include them may be sold up to 30 pieces per design. More than that is commercial use and is not permitted, and neither is selling or sharing the images themselves or passing them off as your own. Please ask before any other use.
Start the whole list with a smiling shark wearing sunglasses, the friendliest version of the shape you will draw today. Sketch a fat teardrop body with fineliner, flat belly down, pointed snout facing right, then add one triangle fin on top and a smaller tail fin behind.
Draw the mouth as a wide curved line with a few triangle teeth sitting on it, then two round sunglass lenses over the eye line before the rest of the face goes in. If the smile looks flat, curve the corners up a little more than feels natural, cartoon mouths need the exaggeration.
Fill the sunglasses with a quick coral marker swipe and leave the shark itself white with just outline, so the color reads as an accessory rather than the shark’s own color. No marker on hand works fine too, a scribble of fineliner cross-hatch over the lenses reads just as clearly as dark glass.
Keep the line around the body a touch wobbly rather than perfectly smooth, that is what makes it look hand drawn and friendly instead of stenciled.

Move from a full shark to just a hint of one: a shark fin poking out of a teacup, as if something enormous is hiding in your afternoon tea. Draw the teacup first, a simple rounded cup on a small saucer with one curved handle, then add a wavy line just inside the rim to suggest the tea surface.
Let the fin break through that wavy line at an angle, a single triangle with a slightly curved back edge, and add two or three short curved lines beside it for ripples. This is a proportion idea: keep the fin roughly one third the height of the cup, any bigger and the joke of “big shark, tiny cup” stops reading.
Steam lines above the cup and a coral marker fill on the fin finish it off, with sky blue kept for a thin line of tea inside the rim. If your teacup wobbles, trace around a small round lid or coin for the saucer and cup rim instead of drawing freehand.
Today’s tip: draw the ripple lines last, after the fin is placed, so they wrap around it rather than sitting underneath.
Palette: Coral,Sky Blue,Ink Black
Shrink the shark right down for a baby shark with a tiny pacifier, rounder and softer than any shark so far. Draw the body as a short plump oval rather than a teardrop, big head, small tail, and keep the fin small and stubby on top.
Give it oversized eyes low on the face, almost half the head, since big eyes are what read as “baby” on any animal. Add a small round pacifier right at the mouth, just a circle with a little handle loop, sitting where the teeth would normally show.
This is the eye level and light idea: draw the whole scene as if you are looking slightly down at the baby shark, so the top of the head and fin show more than the belly, which reads as a caretaker’s view and makes it feel cuter. Coral works well as a blush spot on each cheek.
If the proportions feel off, measure the eye against the head: in a baby version the eye should be close to one quarter of the head’s height.
Palette: Coral,Sky Blue,Ink Black
Give your shark a snack next: a shark eating a slice of watermelon, mouth wide open around a wedge nearly as big as its head. Draw the shark’s head and open mouth first, a wide curved line splitting into upper and lower jaw with a few teeth along the edge, then fit the watermelon wedge between the jaws.
The wedge is just a triangle with a scalloped rind edge and a scatter of small teardrop seeds, quick to fill with coral marker for the flesh and sky blue only if you want a pale rind line. Draw the shark’s eye as a small happy curve above the open mouth so the whole face reads as delighted rather than aggressive.
This is the quick versus slow version: in ten minutes, stop after the outline and two color fills. Given forty minutes, add a few juice drips below the wedge and a light cross-hatch of fine lines on the shark’s back for texture.
If the watermelon wedge looks too flat, angle the scalloped rind line slightly so one corner points toward the viewer.
Palette: Coral,Sky Blue,Ink Black
Hammerhead sharks give you a shape no other sea creature offers, so make the most of it: a hammerhead shark with a little hat perched right on that flat wide head. Draw the head first as a flattened bar with rounded ends, eyes sitting right out at the tips, then attach the body tapering back from the center of that bar.
Add fins and tail the same way as any shark doodle, then place a tiny hat, a sun hat shape or a small party hat, balanced on the center of the head between the eyes. Keep the hat small relative to the head’s width or it will hide the hammerhead shape that makes this one fun.
Fill the hat band in coral and leave the crown white, or swap to sky blue if you want a cooler palette on this page. A light pencil guideline across the paper first helps keep the hammer bar level before you ink it.
If the two eyes end up uneven, draw the bar first, mark its exact center, then place both eyes the same distance out from that mark.
Palette: Coral,Sky Blue,Ink Black
Take the shark out of open water and into a pool float ring, bobbing at the surface like it is on vacation. Draw a thick donut-shaped ring first, leaving a gap where the shark’s head and tail poke out on either side, then fit the body loosely through the middle.
Only the head, a bit of belly and the tail fin show above the ring, so keep those parts relaxed and a little squashed, arms-up vacation energy rather than a sleek swimming pose. Color the ring in coral with a sky blue stripe, which also gives the eye a clear focal shape before it reads the shark.
A few short wavy lines around the ring suggest water without needing a full scene. If the ring looks lopsided, draw it as two concentric circles first and erase the inner guideline once the shark is placed.
Vary it next time by swapping the ring for a striped beach ball the shark is balancing on instead.
Palette: Coral,Sky Blue,Ink Black
Give the shark a quiet moment with a shark reading a book underwater, propped up as if lounging on the seabed. Draw the body in a relaxed curled pose, tail tucked slightly under, then add two short front fins holding an open book in front of the face.
The book is just two slightly curved rectangles meeting at a spine, a few short lines standing in for text. Small round glasses low on the snout add to the studious look without any extra drawing time, and a sky blue wash of short curved lines around the whole scene suggests water.
This is the light source idea: add a few bubbles rising from the snout, spaced unevenly and getting smaller as they go up, which gives the page a sense of drifting upward that a static scene lacks. Keep the bubbles plain circles, no shading needed.
If the fins holding the book look stiff, round every corner on them, nothing on a shark should have a sharp straight edge.
Palette: Sky Blue,Coral,Ink Black
Soften the shark shape with a flower crown sitting across the top of its head, a nice contrast between the sharp teeth below and the pretty ring above. Draw the shark’s head and face as usual, then sketch a simple arc of five or six small flowers running from behind one eye to behind the other.
Each flower is just five tiny rounded petals around a dot center, quick enough to repeat along the whole crown without it taking over the drawing time. Keep two or three petals coral and the rest left white so the crown reads as colorful without needing every flower filled in.
A couple of small leaf shapes tucked between flowers finish the crown. If the flowers end up too big and swallow the shark’s head, draw the crown’s curved guideline first and fit the flowers inside it rather than drawing flowers first and squeezing the line around them.
No markers handy: a light scribble fill in fineliner on alternating petals gives the same effect in black and white.

Switch body shapes for a happy whale shark, broader and flatter across the back than the classic shark silhouette, with a wide friendly mouth instead of a toothy one. Draw the body as a long rounded rectangle rather than a teardrop, flat belly, gently domed back, and keep the mouth as a simple wide curve near the front rather than pointed teeth.
Whale sharks are known for pale spots across the back, so once the body outline is inked, scatter a loose grid of small circles over the top half, leaving the belly plain. This is the texture trick for today: draw the spots a little uneven in size and spacing on purpose, a perfectly even grid looks stamped rather than drawn.
Sky blue fills the body lightly, leaving the white spots untouched, with coral reserved for the small round cheeks. If your spots start looking too dense, stop early, a whale shark doodle reads fine with far fewer spots than the real animal has.
Palette: Sky Blue,Coral,Ink Black
Pair the shark with an unlikely friend for a shark hugging a jellyfish, two front fins wrapped gently around a round jellyfish body. Draw the shark first in a slight forward lean, fins reaching out, then fit the jellyfish’s domed top right against the shark’s chest.
The jellyfish is a simple rounded dome with several wavy tentacle lines hanging below, drawn loosely so they drape rather than hang straight. Keep the jellyfish small enough that the hug looks tender rather than like the shark is eating it, scale is doing most of the storytelling here.
Coral fills the jellyfish dome in a light scribble, sky blue adds a thin outline glow around both characters. For the quick version, stop after outlines and one color fill; given more time, add tiny hearts floating between the two faces.
If the hug looks awkward, bend the shark’s fins at the “elbow” rather than drawing them as straight triangles reaching forward.
Palette: Coral,Sky Blue,Ink Black
Lean into the row of teeth for once instead of hiding it: a shark with braces, little metal brackets and a connecting wire running across its grin. Draw the mouth wide open as usual, triangle teeth all along the jawline, then add a small square or dot on each tooth with a thin horizontal line threading through them all.
This only works if the teeth are drawn a little uneven first, since braces look funniest on a crooked smile rather than a perfectly neat one. Keep the wire line slightly wavy rather than ruler straight, it should look like it is actually sitting across bumpy teeth.
Sky blue on one or two rubber band details between teeth adds a nice bit of color without much extra drawing. If the brackets start looking too fiddly at this size, simplify to small dots instead of squares, the wire line alone reads as braces even without the brackets.
Finish with raised eyebrows on the shark, a small added detail that makes the braces read as a little self-conscious and funny.
Palette: Sky Blue,Coral,Ink Black
Put the shark on top of the water instead of under it for a shark surfing a wave, balanced on a small surfboard with a curling wave behind. Draw the wave first as a tall curved shape, thicker at the base and curling over at the top like a hook, then place the surfboard as a thin oval along the wave’s lower slope.
The shark sits on top of the board in a slight crouch, front fins out for balance, tail fin trailing behind rather than straight down. This is a perspective idea: draw the wave’s curl higher than the shark’s head so it genuinely looks like it is about to break overhead, which gives the whole doodle motion it would not have with a flat background.
Sky blue fills the wave, left white along the curling edge for foam, with coral reserved for a stripe on the surfboard. If the wave shape fights you, sketch it faint in pencil first and adjust the curl before going over it in fineliner.
Palette: Sky Blue,Coral,Ink Black
Keep this one light and simple: a shark holding a balloon, one front fin curled around a string that trails down to a round balloon. Draw the shark in a relaxed standing pose on its tail, which is a fun small cheat since real sharks cannot stand, but it reads instantly as playful on paper.
The balloon is one circle with a small triangle knot at the bottom and a thin wavy string connecting it to the fin. Fill the balloon in coral with one small white highlight oval left unfilled, since even a quick highlight shape makes a round balloon look glossy rather than flat.
If the standing pose looks odd, widen the tail fin at the base so it reads as feet rather than a fish tail trying to balance. For the forty minute version, add two or three smaller balloons floating beside the first one.
Palette: Coral,Sky Blue,Ink Black
Cozy up the shark in a knitted sweater, the kind of small styling detail that instantly makes any animal doodle feel warmer. Draw the body as usual, then add a simple rounded sweater shape over the front half, a wide neckline and a straight hem just before the tail.
A few short diagonal lines across the sweater in rows suggest a knit pattern without drawing every stitch, three or four rows is plenty at this size. Coral works well as the sweater color with sky blue reserved for a stripe at the hem and collar.
If the sweater looks like it is floating off the body, draw it hugging the belly curve closely at the bottom hem and only loosen it slightly at the chest. One swap if coral runs out: use a warm orange or red marker instead, the cozy feeling comes from the warm color family more than the exact shade.
Palette: Coral,Sky Blue,Ink Black
Give the shark a vacation drink next, a shark sipping a drink with a straw, head tilted slightly to one side toward the glass. Draw the shark’s face in a relaxed three quarter angle rather than straight on, since the tilt is what sells the sipping action, then add a tall glass shape held in one front fin.
Fill the glass with a few horizontal wavy lines near the top for the drink surface, a small triangle or wedge shape clipped to the rim for garnish, and one long bent straw reaching up to the mouth. Coral fills the drink itself, sky blue works well as a thin outline on the glass to suggest it is frosty and cold.
If the straw looks stiff, give it one gentle bend partway up rather than drawing it as a straight line, real straws in a glass always lean. A paper umbrella tucked beside the straw is an easy extra for the slower version.
Palette: Coral,Sky Blue,Ink Black
Lift the shark right out of the water for a shark sleeping on a cloud, curled up and snoozing above everything else on the page. Draw a soft lumpy cloud shape first, several overlapping rounded bumps rather than one smooth oval, then curl the shark’s body along the top of it, tail wrapped loosely near the head.
Closed eyes drawn as two short curved lines and a small “z” shape or two floating nearby finish the sleepy mood without any extra fuss. Sky blue fills the cloud lightly around its edges, leaving the center white so it still reads as soft and light rather than a solid shape.
This is the quick and slow version: in ten minutes, stop at the outline, closed eyes and one cloud fill. With more time, add a faint scatter of tiny stars around the cloud and a thin blanket draped over the shark’s tail.
If the cloud looks like a single blob, add at least four separate bumps along its top edge so the lumpy shape reads clearly.
Palette: Sky Blue,Coral,Ink Black
Mark an occasion with a shark with a birthday cake, two front fins holding a small layered cake out in front of its grin. Draw the cake as two or three stacked rounded rectangles of decreasing width, a scalloped line of frosting between each layer, and a few thin candle lines with small flame shapes on top.
Coral works well filling the frosting layers while sky blue takes the candles, giving the page a nice two color balance without either one taking over. Keep the shark’s mouth open in a wide happy curve just behind the candles, as if it is about to blow them out, which adds motion to an otherwise static pose.
If the layers look lopsided, draw a faint vertical centerline down the cake first and keep both edges of each layer the same distance from it. For a simpler version, drop to a single round cake with one candle rather than a full tiered stack.
Palette: Coral,Sky Blue,Ink Black
Turn the shark into a treat for a shark-shaped cookie with icing, flat and simple like something cut from dough. Draw the shark’s silhouette as one clean outline, no fin or tail detail beyond the basic shape, then add a thinner line tracking just inside the whole outline to suggest a piped icing border.
Fill the icing border in sky blue, leaving the cookie body itself a warm beige or plain white, and add a few small coral dots scattered across the body for sprinkles. Since this is a flat cookie rather than a swimming shark, skip any shading that would suggest roundness, the whole appeal is that it reads as flat and edible.
If the icing line wanders too far from the edge, draw the cookie outline first in pencil, then trace the icing line a consistent small distance inside it before inking either one. One swap: no coral on hand, use any bright marker dot for the sprinkles, the scatter pattern matters more than the exact color.
Palette: Sky Blue,Coral,Ink Black
Zoom in on a small object for a shark tooth necklace, a single curved tooth shape hanging from a simple cord. Draw the tooth first as a tall triangle with a slightly curved edge on one side and a small serrated edge along the other, more organic than a perfect geometric triangle.
A thin loop near the top of the tooth connects to a cord drawn as two parallel curved lines dipping down into a soft “U” shape, as if it is hanging against a neck. Coral works well as a small wrapped detail where the cord meets the tooth, sky blue as a thin bead or two threaded along the cord.
If the serrated edge looks too busy, draw three or four small notches rather than trying to fill the whole edge with teeth marks, a few well placed notches read clearly at doodle size. This is a nice calm page to pair with a busier shark drawing elsewhere on the same spread.
Palette: Coral,Sky Blue,Ink Black
Add a small sidekick for a shark with a starfish friend, perched right on top of the shark’s snout like a tiny passenger. Draw the shark’s head and body first in a calm swimming pose, then place a simple five pointed starfish shape balanced on the flattest part of the snout.
Keep the starfish’s points rounded rather than sharp, and add a few small dots across its surface for texture rather than drawing individual bumps. Coral fills the starfish body nicely, with sky blue reserved for a light wavy line trailing behind the shark to suggest gentle movement through water.
If the starfish slides off the snout visually, overlap its bottom point slightly over the shark’s outline rather than leaving a gap between them, overlap is what makes two shapes read as touching. A relaxed closed-eye expression on the shark completes the friendly pairing.
Palette: Coral,Sky Blue,Ink Black
Soften the shark into an object for a shark plushie in bed, tucked under a blanket with just the head and a bit of the fin poking out. Draw a simple bed shape first, a rectangle with a thicker headboard line at one end, then fit the plushie shark’s head onto a small pillow at that end.
A blanket drawn as one gently curved line across the body, with a soft scalloped or wavy top edge, covers the rest of the shark so only the head, one fin tip and maybe the tail peek out. Add one visible seam line across the plushie’s head, a small stitched detail that reminds the viewer this is a toy rather than a real shark.
Coral works well as the blanket color, sky blue as a small patch or button detail on the pillow. If the blanket looks flat, add two or three short fold lines near where it meets the pillow, folds are what make fabric read as soft rather than painted on.
Palette: Coral,Sky Blue,Ink Black
Bring in some music for a shark playing a ukulele, one front fin strumming across a small four stringed body. Draw the ukulele first, a figure eight shape with a round sound hole and a thin neck extending up, then rest it against the shark’s chest at an angle as if mid-strum.
Four short straight lines down the neck stand in for strings, with the strumming fin drawn slightly blurred or doubled at the strumming point to suggest motion. Coral fills the ukulele body, sky blue takes a couple of small musical note shapes floating up near the shark’s head.
If the ukulele looks too large against the shark, measure it against the shark’s own head: keeping the instrument body roughly the same height as the head keeps the scale believable. Swap the ukulele for a small hand drum if strings feel fiddly to draw at this size.
Palette: Coral,Sky Blue,Ink Black
Loop back to that famous row of teeth for a shark brushing its teeth, toothbrush held up in one fin against an open grin. Draw the mouth wide open first, teeth drawn slightly uneven in size, then place a simple toothbrush shape, a thin handle and a small rectangular bristle head, angled into the corner of the mouth.
A small cloud of short zigzag lines near the brush tip suggests foam or bubbles without needing to draw individual suds. Sky blue fills the toothbrush handle, coral takes the small bristle patch, a nice complementary pop against the plain white teeth.
If the open mouth looks too aggressive once the teeth are in, round the eyes into a relaxed closed-eye expression, a calm eye instantly shifts the whole expression from threatening to funny. A light pencil guideline for the jaw curve before inking keeps both halves of the mouth symmetrical.
Palette: Sky Blue,Coral,Ink Black
Build a small scene for a shark in a sandcastle moat, poking up from a ring of water that circles a little sandcastle. Draw the sandcastle first, a few stacked rounded towers with small flag triangles on top, then add a curved moat line around its base, water lapping right up against the sand.
The shark’s head and fin break through the moat’s surface at one side, much smaller in scale than the castle so the whole thing reads as a tiny beach scene rather than a real threat. Coral works well filling the little flags, sky blue fills the moat water with a few short wavy lines for texture.
If the castle towers look too uniform, vary their heights slightly and add a window or door shape to just one of them, a single detail breaks up repetition without extra drawing time. A small shovel or bucket resting in the sand nearby is an easy addition for the slower version of this page.
For more tiny beach and sea pages like this, the easy beach watercolor ideas list has several that translate well into doodle form.
Palette: Coral,Sky Blue,Ink Black
Give the shark its own tiny snorkeling gear for a shark wearing a snorkel, mask strapped over its eyes and a bent tube rising above its head. Draw the mask first, a rounded rectangle shape with a strap line curving around behind the head, then attach a thin curved tube on one side rising up and bending at the top like a periscope.
Keep the mask lens area white or lightly filled sky blue to suggest glass, while the strap and tube take a coral outline fill for contrast. A small round float or air bubble shape at the top of the snorkel tube is an easy extra detail.
If the snorkel tube looks straight and stiff, bend it in two places rather than one, a tube with a single soft curve near the base and another near the top reads far more natural than a single rigid bend. This pairs nicely with other small sea creature doodles from the watercolor octopus ideas list if you want a full beach themed page.
Palette: Coral,Sky Blue,Ink Black
Pair up two characters for a shark and a fish sharing an umbrella, both tucked under one open umbrella shape as if sheltering from rain underwater. Draw the umbrella first, a simple dome shape divided into six or so panels by lines running from the center point down to the scalloped edge, with a thin handle hanging below.
Place the shark on one side and a small round fish on the other, both tilted slightly inward toward the handle, which makes them look like they are genuinely huddled together rather than just standing near each other. Alternate coral and sky blue fills across the umbrella panels for a cheerful striped look.
If the two characters end up too far apart under the dome, draw the umbrella first at a width that only just fits both, tight framing does more for the “sharing” feeling than wide spacing ever will. A few raindrop shapes falling outside the umbrella’s edge finish the scene.
Palette: Coral,Sky Blue,Ink Black
Dress the shark up simply for a shark with a bow tie, one small accessory doing all the personality work on an otherwise plain pose. Draw the shark’s body and face first in a calm front facing pose, then add the bow tie right at the base of the throat, two triangles meeting at a small center knot.
Keep the bow tie symmetrical by drawing one triangle, then flipping your hand or the paper to trace its mirror on the other side rather than guessing the second triangle freehand. Coral fills the bow tie nicely against the shark’s plain white body, with a thin sky blue outline added around the whole shark for a bit of extra pop on the page.
If the front facing pose feels flat, angle the head very slightly to one side while keeping the bow tie centered, a small tilt adds life without disturbing the tie’s symmetry. This one works well as a simple closing piece at the end of a shark themed spread.
Palette: Coral,Sky Blue,Ink Black
Close the list with a shark eating sushi, chopsticks held in one fin lifting a single piece toward an open mouth. Draw the sushi piece first, a small rounded rectangle of rice with a thin wrapped strip around its middle and a simple topping shape on top, then add two thin chopstick lines gripping it from above.
Position the shark’s open mouth and raised fin so the chopsticks lead the eye straight from the sushi into the mouth, a small compositional trick that makes the action clear at a glance. Coral fills the topping and the wrapped strip, sky blue adds a thin line for a small dish of soy sauce sitting below.
If the chopsticks look like they are floating free, overlap them slightly across the sushi piece rather than leaving a gap, the same overlap trick that helps any two touching shapes read correctly. For more small food and snack doodles to round out a sketchbook page, the mini doodle ideas list has plenty in the same quick style.

What to Do Next
Pick one shark from the list, the sunglasses shark is the easiest starting point, and work through it on plain smooth paper with your fineliner before reaching for the markers. Once that one feels comfortable, the rest of the list builds on the same simple body shape.
Frequently Asked Questions
What pens work best for a shark doodle?
A black fineliner in a fine tip, around 0.3 to 0.5, works best for the outline. Add sky blue and coral alcohol markers or gel pens for small accent fills once the ink is fully dry.
How do you make a shark doodle look friendly instead of scary?
Round every edge and raise the eyebrows or curve the mouth upward. Big rounded eyes, a wide smiling mouth and soft fin shapes turn the same basic shark shape instantly friendly.
Do I need to draw real shark anatomy for these doodles?
No, these doodles use a simplified teardrop body, triangle fins and a curved smile rather than accurate shark anatomy. Proportion and expression matter far more than biological accuracy at this style.
What is the easiest shark doodle to start with?
The smiling shark with sunglasses is the simplest, using just a teardrop body, two fins and one accessory. It teaches the basic shark shape before adding any scene or prop around it.
How do I keep a whole page of shark doodles looking consistent?
Reuse the same basic body shape and line weight across every shark on the page. Vary the pose, face and one prop per shark rather than redesigning the whole body each time.
