36 Christmas Flowers Drawing Ideas for Modern Holiday Bouquets and Winter Blooms

37

Christmas flowers drawing gives you all the softness of a florist’s window without leaving your desk. These pages mix winter blooms with the small modern touches you already love: marble tables, kraft paper, tartan ribbon, a cat nosing at a poinsettia on the hall table.

Below you will find 36 bouquets and winter scenes, each one built to finish in a single sitting. Pick whichever one catches your eye first, wet your paper, and let the petals bloom from there.

Start with the easiest bouquet on the list: a red amaryllis in a ceramic pot catching sun on a windowsill. Sketch the trumpet-shaped blooms in pencil first, three or four open flowers on thick stems, then the pot as a simple rounded shape beneath them.

Paint the petals with a wet red wash, letting it pool slightly at the base of each petal where the color is naturally deepest. Add the pot in a flat cream or terracotta once the petals are dry, so the colors do not bleed into each other.

The usual trouble spot is the trumpet shape going flat. Keep one side of each bloom in shadow with a second red glaze and the flower reads as three-dimensional instead of a paper cutout.

Tip for today: mix your amaryllis red with a touch of orange rather than straight from the tube, it reads warmer in sunlight.

You Will Need

• cold press watercolor paper
• round brush size 8
• cadmium red watercolor
• pencil for the sketch

Palette: Cadmium Red,Burnt Sienna,Sap Green,Raw Umber

Try adding a thin pencil grid over your reference photo first, it keeps the trumpet shapes of the amaryllis symmetrical before you commit to paint.

Following the bold amaryllis, try something quieter: white paperwhites standing in a glass jar filled with pebbles and water. Pencil in the tall stems first, loosely clustered, then the small star-shaped flower clusters at the top of each one.

Paint the white petals with the faintest wash of gray-green, almost just clean water with a hint of pigment, and save the true white of the paper for highlights. The pebbles and water line inside the jar go in with gray and blue-gray once the stems are dry.

Eye level matters here: sit the jar slightly below your own eye line so you see a gentle curve across the top of the water, not a flat line straight across. That small curve is what makes the glass look round.

One tip to finish: a tiny dab of yellow at the center of each flower cluster brings the whole jar to life.

You Will Need

• glass jar reference or photo
• round brush size 6
• pale gray-green watercolor
• yellow ochre watercolor

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Yellow Ochre,Sap Green,Titanium White

Scatter a few loose pencil marks for pebbles before painting, then paint around them so the paper stays white where light hits the glass.

Move from a jar to a hand-tied bouquet: red tulips and pine sprigs wrapped in brown paper, ready to give away. Draw the paper cone shape first, then let the tulip stems emerge from the top at slightly different angles so the bunch feels loose rather than stiff.

Paint the tulip cups in two or three overlapping reds, wet into wet, before adding the pine needles in short dry-brush strokes of dark green. The kraft paper wrap goes on last in warm brown, with a few pencil fold lines kept visible underneath the wash.

Tulips often go wrong when every petal looks identical. Turn two or three cups slightly sideways and let one tulip droop a touch, that small variation is what makes the bunch look real.

Quick version: three tulips and a few pine sprigs in ten minutes. Give yourself forty and add a second layer of pine behind the tulips for depth, plus a twist of ribbon or string around the paper.

You Will Need

• round brush size 6
• dry flat brush for pine
• cadmium red watercolor
• raw sienna for the paper wrap

Palette: Cadmium Red,Alizarin Crimson,Hooker’s Green,Raw Sienna

Press a dry, nearly empty brush sideways for the pine needles instead of painting each one, it gives a scratchy texture that reads as foliage from a distance.

Step outside the vase for this one: pale hellebores growing in snow beside an old garden gate. Sketch the gate loosely in the background first, keeping the lines simple, then place three or four nodding hellebore flowers low in the foreground where the snow has been brushed aside.

Paint the snow first with a very pale blue-gray wash, leaving plenty of white paper showing through. Once dry, add the hellebore petals in soft cream and dusty pink, each flower facing slightly downward the way real hellebores do.

Winter light here comes from one side, usually low and cool. Let that side of the gate and each petal stay pale while the opposite side picks up a gray-violet shadow, which is what makes the snow feel cold rather than flat white.

If you want to try this again, repeat the scene at dusk instead, with a warm little light glowing behind the gate.

You Will Need

• round brush size 6
• pale blue-gray watercolor
• dusty pink watercolor
• masking fluid for snow highlights (optional)

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Dusty Rose,Cream White,Violet Grey

Look at real hellebore photos before you start, the nodding, downward-facing head is what separates them from roses or anemones at a glance.

Bring the scene indoors with a poinsettia sitting on a marble table beside a lit candle. Pencil the star-shaped poinsettia bracts first, radiating out from a small yellow center, then block in the candle and its holder to one side.

Paint the bracts in warm red with slightly darker veins pulled in while the paint is still damp, so the color feathers naturally along each leaf. The marble beneath gets a pale gray wash with a few loose diagonal veins dragged through with a nearly dry brush.

Candlelight changes everything in this one. Let the red bracts nearest the candle warm up slightly with a touch of orange, and keep the far side of the table in cooler shadow for contrast.

Today’s tip: paint the candle flame last, a tiny unpainted sliver of white paper surrounded by warm yellow, rather than outlining it in pen.

You Will Need

• round brush size 6
• cadmium red and orange watercolor
• gray watercolor for marble
• fine brush for veins

Palette: Cadmium Red,Cadmium Orange,Cool Grey,Gold Ochre

A dry brush dragged lightly through wet gray paint gives a convincing marble vein, try two or three directions rather than one straight line.

For a softer palette, try a bouquet of white roses and eucalyptus tied with a velvet bow. Sketch the rounded rose heads loosely overlapping, then weave eucalyptus stems through and around them before adding the bow low at the base of the stems.

Paint the roses with the palest gray-pink wash, working wet into wet so the petal edges stay soft, and save bright white paper for the center of each bloom. Once dry, add the eucalyptus in dusty blue-green and finish with the velvet bow in a deep, matte burgundy.

White flowers are easy to flatten by accident. Keep a shadow side on every rose using gray-violet rather than gray, which keeps the white feeling warm instead of dirty.

If you enjoyed drawing watercolor romantic flowers before, this bouquet uses the same soft petal technique with a holiday palette swapped in.

You Will Need

• round brush size 8
• gray-violet watercolor
• dusty eucalyptus green
• burgundy watercolor for the bow

Palette: Gray Violet,Eucalyptus Green,Burgundy,Titanium White

Try a dry brush dipped in matte burgundy for the bow’s shadow folds, it reads as velvet far better than a flat wash alone.

Add a figure to the series with a woman carrying a bunch of flowers home through falling snow. Keep her simple: a coat silhouette, a scarf, and the bouquet held in one arm with stems visible below her hand.

Block in her coat in a flat, muted color first, leaving her figure slightly loose rather than detailed, then paint the bouquet in bright reds and greens so it becomes the clear focal point against her plainer clothing. Snow goes in last as small dabs of white gouache or a scattering of masking fluid removed at the end.

The flowers can easily get lost against a figure. Keep her coat desaturated and the bouquet saturated, the color contrast alone will pull the eye straight to the blooms.

Quick version: just her coat, scarf and the bouquet in ten minutes. With forty, add a street lamp or shopfront glow behind her for a market scene.

You Will Need

• round brush size 6
• white gouache or masking fluid
• muted navy or gray watercolor
• bright red and green watercolor

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Cadmium Red,Hooker’s Green,Titanium White

Keep her face mostly suggested rather than detailed, a hint of a nose and chin reads better at this scale than trying for a likeness.

Return to a tabletop study with burgundy ranunculus arranged in a vintage vase. Sketch the tightly layered petals of each ranunculus head first, since their rounded, cabbage-like shape is the whole character of the flower, then add the vase beneath in an elegant, slightly fluted shape.

Paint each flower head with overlapping circles of burgundy and deep pink, darkest at the center and lighter toward the outer petals, letting the colors merge slightly while wet. The vase can be painted in a muted gold or dusty green with a simple reflected highlight down one side.

Measure before you paint: hold your brush up to the reference and compare the width of the vase to the width of the flower cluster above it, ranunculus bouquets often end up too small for their vase if you skip this step.

One tip for today: leave tiny white gaps between petal layers rather than painting one solid blob, it keeps every ranunculus looking full instead of flat.

You Will Need

• round brush size 6
• burgundy and deep pink watercolor
• muted gold watercolor for the vase
• pencil for the layered petals

Palette: Burgundy,Deep Pink,Gold Ochre,Sap Green

Check your vase-to-flower proportion against the reference before painting, a vase that reads too small is the most common mistake with a full ranunculus bouquet.

Shift from fresh blooms to a wreath of dried roses, the papery kind that keeps its color through winter. Sketch a simple ring shape first and place five or six rose heads around it at varying sizes, with small dried leaves filling the gaps between them.

Paint the dried roses in dusty, muted reds and terracotta rather than bright red, since dried petals lose their saturation, and let the paint dry slightly uneven for a papery texture. Add the ring base last in a soft brown or faded green.

Dried flowers rely on edges, not color, for their character. Use a fine brush or lift a little paint with a damp brush along each petal edge so they look slightly curled and crisp rather than smooth and fresh.

If you want a different take next time, try the same wreath with dried hydrangea heads instead of roses for a fuller, softer look.

You Will Need

• round brush size 6
• terracotta and dusty red watercolor
• fine brush for curled edges
• damp brush for lifting

Palette: Terracotta,Dusty Red,Faded Green,Raw Umber

Lift a little color with a damp, nearly dry brush along petal tips once the wash is just barely dry, it creates the slightly curled papery edge dried roses have.

Keep things small with mistletoe and its white berries arranged in a single bud vase. Sketch just a few paired, rounded leaves on thin stems with clusters of tiny berries nestled between them, since mistletoe reads best as a sparse, graphic shape.

Paint the leaves in a soft sage green, leaving the paper white for the berries until the leaves are dry. Add the berries last as small dots of pale gray-white with a touch of shadow on one side of each to give them roundness.

The slim bud vase is the easiest part to get wrong by making it too wide. Compare its width to the thickness of the stems in your reference, a bud vase is usually barely wider than the stems it holds.

Today’s tip: dot the berry shadows with the tip of your brush rather than a flat wash, a single small stroke is enough to make each berry look round.

You Will Need

• fine round brush size 2
• sage green watercolor
• pale gray watercolor
• slim vase reference

Palette: Sage Green,Pale Grey,Soft White,Olive

Keep the bud vase narrow and tall rather than rounded, a slim cylinder shape is what reads instantly as a bud vase rather than a jar.

Widen the view for a flower stall glowing inside a Christmas market. Sketch the stall’s wooden frame and striped awning first, then fill the front with loose buckets of red and white flowers, keeping each bucket simple rather than detailing every stem.

Paint the background market in slightly muted, cooler tones so it recedes, then bring the flower buckets forward in the brightest reds and whites on the page. A few string lights can go in last as small dots of warm yellow gouache.

This scene lives or dies on depth. Keep anything behind the stall cooler and softer in edge, and keep the flowers in front warm and crisp, that contrast alone creates the sense of distance.

For more cozy market and street scenes like this, the ideas in Christmas scene drawing pair well with a stall like this one.

You Will Need

• round brush size 8
• warm red and white watercolor
• cool blue-gray for background
• white gouache for lights

Palette: Cadmium Red,Cool Grey,Gold Ochre,Titanium White

Soften the edges of everything behind the stall with a damp brush right after painting, crisp edges should belong only to the flowers up front.

Return to the amaryllis theme with a softer version: a pink amaryllis standing beside a wrapped gift box. Sketch the open trumpet blooms as before, then add a simple rectangular gift box to one side, wrapped in paper with a ribbon crossing the top.

Paint the petals in blush pink with a slightly deeper pink pooled at the base of each one, then paint the gift box in a contrasting color such as deep green or burgundy so it does not compete with the flower. Add the ribbon last in white or gold.

Keep the gift box smaller and lower than the amaryllis in your sketch. A box that is too large pulls attention away from the flower, which should stay the clear subject of the piece.

Quick version: the amaryllis alone in ten minutes. With forty, add a second small box behind it and a sprig of pine tucked under the ribbon.

You Will Need

• round brush size 8
• blush pink watercolor
• deep green or burgundy for the box
• gold gel pen for ribbon detail

Palette: Blush Pink,Deep Green,Gold,Soft White

Try a metallic gold gel pen over the dry ribbon for a bit of shine, it makes the gift box feel finished without extra paint layers.

Try a hyacinth growing in a clear glass bulb vase, roots and all, for something a little different. Sketch the bulb vase first as two joined curves, a bulb shape widening below and a narrow neck above, then draw the hyacinth’s dense cluster of small flowers rising from the top.

Paint the flower cluster in soft purple or pink with tiny dabs rather than one solid wash, since hyacinth blooms are made of dozens of small florets packed together. The bulb and visible roots inside the glass go in last with pale, translucent washes to suggest the water and glass.

Perspective matters most at the glass. Sit the vase at eye level and keep the ellipse at the top of the bulb nearly flat, almost a straight line, which is what makes a glass vase look like it is sitting right in front of you.

One tip to finish: leave a thin unpainted line down one side of the glass for the reflection, it instantly reads as glass rather than a solid pot.

You Will Need

• fine round brush size 4
• soft purple or pink watercolor
• pale gray-blue for glass and roots
• pencil for the bulb shape

Palette: Lavender,Soft Pink,Pale Blue Grey,Sap Green

Dab the hyacinth florets with the tip of a small brush rather than blending them into one shape, the texture of many tiny flowers is what sells it.

Move to anemones next, their dramatic dark centers set against pale petals in a simple ceramic jug. Sketch the flat, rounded petal shapes first and leave a small circle empty in the middle of each bloom for the dark center, then add the jug as a sturdy, simple shape beneath.

Paint the petals in white or pale pink, letting the color pool slightly at the petal base, then once completely dry, paint the center in near-black with a ring of fine dark lines radiating outward like tiny spokes. The jug can be a flat, muted blue or cream.

The dark center is the one place crisp edges matter most on this page. Wait until the petals are bone dry before adding it, or the black will bleed outward and lose its sharp, graphic punch.

Try this again later with anemones in deep red or burgundy instead of white, the same dark-center technique works on any color petal.

You Will Need

• fine round brush size 2
• pale pink or white watercolor
• near-black ink or watercolor
• ceramic jug reference

Palette: Soft White,Blush Pink,Ivory Black,Muted Blue

Let the petals dry fully before touching the dark center, a bone-dry surface is the only way to keep those fine radiating lines crisp.

Build a fuller scene with a table centerpiece combining pine, roses and lit candles. Sketch a low, horizontal arrangement first, pine sprigs forming the base shape and two or three roses nestled among them, then place candles of varying heights rising up through the greenery.

Paint the pine in layered dark greens first, then add the roses in warm red once the greenery is dry so the petals sit clearly on top. The candles go in last, pale cream with a soft yellow glow painted loosely around each flame.

Light source decides everything in a candlelit centerpiece. Keep the glow warmest right around each flame and let it cool quickly into the greenery, rather than lighting the whole table evenly.

If centerpieces and table scenes interest you, the ideas in Christmas painting ideas for small canvases cover more tablescapes worth trying.

You Will Need

• round brush size 8
• dark green and cadmium red watercolor
• cream and yellow for candles
• fine brush for flame glow

Palette: Hooker’s Green,Cadmium Red,Cream,Warm Yellow

Paint the candle glow as a soft, loose halo of yellow rather than a hard circle, dabbing with a nearly dry brush gives the softest result.

Add some mischief with a cat sniffing curiously at a poinsettia plant. Sketch the cat first in a simple curled or crouching pose, nose stretched toward the flower, then add the poinsettia’s star-shaped bracts just within reach of its whiskers.

Paint the cat in flat, simple fur tones first, keeping detail minimal around the face so the pose reads clearly, then paint the poinsettia bracts in bold red once the cat is dry. A few whisker lines in white gel pen finish the cat last.

Getting the cat’s proportions wrong is the easiest slip here. Compare the size of its head to the length of its body before you paint, a cat crouching forward usually has a head roughly a fifth the length of its whole body.

Quick version: cat and flower only, ten minutes. With forty, add a windowsill beneath them and a view of snow outside.

You Will Need

• round brush size 6
• warm brown or gray for the cat
• cadmium red for the poinsettia
• white gel pen for whiskers

Palette: Warm Grey,Burnt Sienna,Cadmium Red,Sap Green

Check the cat’s head-to-body ratio against your reference before painting, it is the single measurement that keeps a crouching cat looking natural.

Have fun with carnations painted in candy cane colors, red and white striped petals bundled into a cheerful bouquet. Sketch the ruffled, frilly edges of each carnation head loosely, since their texture is all in those small irregular edges rather than a smooth outline.

Paint the base of each flower white, then while still slightly damp, pull thin red lines outward from the center with a fine brush so the color feathers naturally along the ruffled edges like a real candy cane stripe. Greenery around the stems can go in last in a simple sap green.

Carnations lose their character if the edges get painted too smoothly. Use short, jagged little brushstrokes rather than a single smooth line around each petal, that roughness is exactly what makes a carnation read as a carnation.

One tip for today: pull your red stripes toward the center rather than outward, the color naturally concentrates near the base the way a real candy cane stripe fades at its tip.

You Will Need

• fine round brush size 3
• white and cadmium red watercolor
• sap green for stems
• pencil for ruffled outline

Palette: Soft White,Cadmium Red,Sap Green,Candy Pink

Use short jagged brushstrokes rather than smooth curves around each carnation petal, the rough edge is what gives carnations their distinct ruffled look.

Step back outdoors for winter jasmine trailing its small yellow flowers along a brick wall. Sketch the wall first as a loose grid of brick shapes, then let thin, arching jasmine stems cross over it with small star-shaped flowers scattered along their length.

Paint the brick wall first in warm terracotta with slightly darker mortar lines, keeping the whole wall a bit soft and out of focus. Once dry, paint the jasmine stems in fresh green with the small yellow flowers dotted on last so they sit clearly on top.

This is a good one for comparing warm and cool: the brick wall is warm and slightly blurred, while the jasmine flowers are a cooler, brighter yellow and should stay crisp, which keeps the flowers from disappearing into the wall.

Try it again in summer with climbing roses on the same brick wall instead of jasmine, the technique for the wall stays identical.

You Will Need

• round brush size 6
• terracotta watercolor for brick
• fresh green and yellow watercolor
• fine brush for flowers

Palette: Terracotta,Fresh Green,Bright Yellow,Raw Umber

Keep the brick wall slightly soft and the jasmine flowers crisp, that contrast in sharpness is what pulls the eye straight to the blooms.

Try something more graphic next: a vase of bare branches hung with a few tiny ornaments instead of leaves or flowers. Sketch the branches first with a dry, scratchy pencil line, letting them fork unevenly in a few directions, then place three or four small round ornaments hanging along them.

Paint the branches with a fine brush in grayish brown, keeping the line thin and slightly broken rather than one continuous stroke. The ornaments go in last as small, bold circles of red or gold, each with a tiny highlight left unpainted.

Branches are easy to make look too neat. Vary the thickness of your brush line as it travels along each branch, thicker near the base and thinner toward the tips, which is how real branches actually taper.

Quick version: branches and ornaments alone in ten minutes. With forty, add a simple glass vase and a few inches of water at the base.

You Will Need

• fine round brush size 2
• grayish brown watercolor
• red and gold watercolor for ornaments
• vase reference (optional)

Palette: Grayish Brown,Cadmium Red,Gold,Soft White

Vary your brush pressure along each branch so the line tapers naturally, a line of even thickness is the fastest way to make branches look fake.

Keep things delicate with a small woven basket filled with snowdrops. Sketch the basket first with simple crosshatched lines to suggest weaving, then add the snowdrops rising above the rim, each flower a small nodding white bell on a thin green stem.

Paint the basket in warm brown with the crosshatch pattern suggested through a few darker lines rather than every single weave, then paint the snowdrops in the palest green-white, leaving the paper mostly untouched for the petals themselves.

Snowdrops are tiny, which makes their stems the part most likely to look stiff. Let each stem curve slightly and let the flower heads tilt in different directions, since real snowdrops never all face the same way.

One tip to finish: add the thin green stripe down each snowdrop petal last with a very fine brush, it is the one detail that makes them instantly recognizable.

You Will Need

• fine round brush size 2
• warm brown for the basket
• pale green-white watercolor
• very fine brush for petal stripes

Palette: Warm Brown,Soft White,Pale Green,Sap Green

Let every snowdrop head tilt at a slightly different angle, uniform, upright flowers are the fastest way to make this basket look stiff.

Try a single camellia bloom floating in a teacup for a quiet, pretty study. Sketch the teacup first as a simple rounded shape with a thin handle, then draw the camellia’s layered, rounded petals sitting just at the rim of the cup.

Paint the camellia in deep pink or red, working wet into wet so the overlapping petal layers blend softly into each other near the center, with crisper edges kept toward the outer petals. The teacup goes in last with a simple pattern, perhaps a thin gold rim or a few small painted dots.

The biggest risk with a floating flower is the water around it looking flat. Add a few curved reflection lines in pale gray-blue right at the waterline to suggest the cup’s surface and the flower resting on it.

If delicate floral studies like this appeal to you, simple watercolor flowers ideas has more single-bloom studies worth trying next.

You Will Need

• round brush size 6
• deep pink watercolor
• gold gel pen for the teacup rim
• pale gray-blue for water reflections

Palette: Deep Pink,Soft White,Gold,Pale Blue Grey

Add a few curved reflection lines right at the waterline inside the cup, it keeps the floating flower from looking stuck on top of a flat surface.

Give a mixed bouquet some holiday structure with a wide tartan ribbon tied at the base. Sketch a loose cluster of roses, pine and a few berries first, then add the ribbon as two overlapping bands crossing the stems with trailing ends hanging down.

Paint the flowers and pine as usual in reds and greens, then once dry, paint the ribbon in a simple two or three color plaid: a red base with thin black and green lines crossing it works well. Keep the plaid lines slightly uneven since they wrap around a curved ribbon.

Plaid on a curved surface is the trickiest part here. Let the horizontal lines of the pattern bend gently to follow the ribbon’s fold instead of staying perfectly straight, which is what makes it look tied rather than flat.

Quick version: flowers and a plain ribbon in ten minutes. With forty, add the full plaid pattern and a second loop of ribbon.

You Will Need

• round brush size 6
• red and green watercolor for the bouquet
• fine brush for plaid lines
• black or dark green ink for ribbon pattern

Palette: Cadmium Red,Hooker’s Green,Ivory Black,Burgundy

Bend the plaid lines gently to follow the ribbon’s curve rather than ruling them straight, a straight plaid pattern is the fastest way to make a ribbon look flat.

Pair an unexpected color combination with pink peonies and silvery pine in a tall vase. Sketch the peonies first as full, rounded blooms with many overlapping petal layers, then tuck silvery-blue pine sprigs in around and behind them.

Paint the peonies in soft blush pink, building up two or three layers of color toward the center where the petals overlap most, and keep the outer petals the palest. The pine goes in with a cool blue-green rather than a true green, which is what gives it that silvery winter look.

Peonies are often painted too round and uniform. Let a few outer petals break the circular outline with small ragged edges, real peonies are rarely a perfect sphere once they are fully open.

Try this again with white peonies and the same silvery pine for a cooler, more monochrome version of the same vase.

You Will Need

• round brush size 8
• blush pink watercolor
• blue-green watercolor for silver pine
• tall vase reference

Palette: Blush Pink,Deep Rose,Silver Blue Green,Soft White

Break the outer edge of each peony with a few small ragged petal shapes rather than a smooth circle, it keeps the bloom looking fully open and natural.

Add some charm with a bouquet of mixed winter flowers spilling from a bicycle basket. Sketch the basket first as a simple woven oval shape attached to the front of a bicycle, then let flowers and greenery overflow generously above and around its rim.

Paint the basket in warm brown with a few crosshatched lines for weave texture, then build the bouquet above it in layered reds, whites and greens, letting a few stems trail down over the edge of the basket for movement. The bicycle itself can stay simple, mostly suggested with a few confident lines rather than fully rendered.

Keep the bicycle secondary to the flowers. A fully detailed bike pulls focus away from the bouquet, so a loose, lightly sketched frame works better than painting every spoke.

One tip for today: let two or three stems and ribbon ends trail below the basket rim, that small touch of movement makes the whole scene feel less staged.

You Will Need

• round brush size 6
• warm brown watercolor for basket
• mixed reds whites and greens
• pencil for the bicycle frame

Palette: Warm Brown,Cadmium Red,Soft White,Sap Green

Sketch the bicycle frame loosely and leave it mostly suggested, a fully detailed bike competes with the bouquet instead of supporting it.

Pair two classic winter greens with holly and ivy arranged in a copper jug. Sketch the jug first with its characteristic wide body and narrow spout, then add trailing ivy vines spilling over the rim with spiky holly leaves and bright red berries tucked among them.

Paint the copper jug first in warm orange-brown, leaving a streak of unpainted paper down one side for shine, then add the holly in dark green with crisp, pointed leaf edges and the ivy in a softer, rounder green trailing down. Berries go in last as small bright red dots.

Copper is defined by its highlight more than its color. Keep that one clean strip of bare paper or pale yellow running down the jug and resist filling it in, that is what makes metal look like metal instead of plain brown.

If metallic containers and still life setups interest you, more ideas like this sit alongside the florals in book stack drawing with teacups and cozy corners.

You Will Need

• round brush size 6
• orange-brown watercolor for copper
• dark green and bright red watercolor
• fine brush for holly points

Palette: Burnt Orange,Hooker’s Green,Cadmium Red,Gold Ochre

Keep one clean unpainted strip running down the jug for the copper highlight, filling it in by accident is the quickest way to flatten a metal surface.

Try something unexpected with a single rose resting in a champagne glass, stem and all. Sketch the tall, narrow glass first with its thin stem and wide bowl, then add one rose bloom sitting inside or leaning against the rim.

Paint the glass with the lightest possible wash, mostly just a few curved lines to suggest its edges and a pale blue-gray shadow beneath it, keeping most of the glass as bare white paper. Paint the rose in rich red once the glass guidelines are dry, letting it be the only strongly saturated color on the page.

Glass only reads as glass through what you leave out. Resist filling in the whole bowl shape with color, a few confident curved lines and one small reflection highlight say more than a full wash ever could.

Quick version: rose and a loosely suggested glass outline in ten minutes. With forty, add a thin stream of bubbles rising inside.

You Will Need

• fine round brush size 3
• pale blue-gray watercolor
• cadmium red watercolor for the rose
• white gel pen for highlights

Palette: Pale Blue Grey,Cadmium Red,Soft White,Deep Green

Leave most of the glass as bare paper and suggest it with only a few curved lines, overpainting the glass is the fastest way to lose its transparency.

Experiment with flowers that appear frozen inside a block of ice, petals suspended mid-bloom. Sketch a rough rectangular ice block shape first, then place a few flower heads and a sprig of greenery inside it at different depths, some closer to the front edge and some further back.

Paint the flowers first in their natural colors, then once dry, glaze a pale blue-gray wash over the entire ice block area, letting it pool slightly thicker at the edges. A few white gouache cracks and air bubble dots go on last over the dry glaze.

Depth is the whole trick with this one. Keep flowers nearer the front of the ice crisp and fully colored, and let anything placed further back go slightly softer and cooler, as though the ice itself is blurring it.

Try this again with just berries and greenery frozen in ice for a simpler, quicker version of the same effect.

You Will Need

• round brush size 6
• pale blue-gray watercolor glaze
• white gouache for cracks and bubbles
• flowers painted in advance to glaze over

Palette: Pale Blue Grey,Cadmium Red,Sap Green,Soft White

Keep anything near the back of the ice block softer and cooler than the front, that falloff in sharpness is what convinces the eye it is seeing through ice.

Design a flower crown made from winter berries and small pine sprigs rather than summer blooms. Sketch a simple curved band shape first, then build small clusters of berries and pine along it, letting the greenery overlap unevenly rather than spacing everything perfectly.

Paint the pine sprigs first in two shades of green for depth, then add berry clusters in red and a few in a dusty blue-purple for variety. Keep the crown band itself mostly hidden beneath the greenery, just a hint of brown or green cord showing through in places.

Crowns can look stiff when every cluster is the same size. Vary the size of your berry clusters and let pine sprigs stick out at different lengths, which gives the whole circle a looser, handmade feel.

One tip for today: paint a few single berries slightly separated from the main clusters, scattered details like that make the crown feel fuller without more work.

You Will Need

• round brush size 6
• two greens for pine depth
• red and blue-purple watercolor for berries
• pencil for the curved band

Palette: Hooker’s Green,Sap Green,Cadmium Red,Dusty Purple

Vary the size of each berry cluster rather than spacing them evenly, uneven clusters are what make a handmade crown look natural instead of manufactured.

Bring in something more exotic with a single orchid stem on a festive holiday table. Sketch the orchid’s distinctive asymmetric petals first, with its lip petal larger and more detailed than the others, then add two or three blooms along a gently arching stem.

Paint the petals in white or pale pink with fine spotted or streaked detail added into the throat of each flower once the base wash is dry. The festive table beneath can suggest a runner or cloth in deep green or red, kept simple so it does not compete with the orchid’s detail.

Orchids go wrong when all the petals are drawn identical in size. Study a reference closely and keep the top petals smaller and the bottom lip petal noticeably larger and more ruffled, that asymmetry is the whole character of the flower.

Quick version: one orchid bloom alone in ten minutes. With forty, add the full arching stem with three or four blooms at different stages of opening.

You Will Need

• fine round brush size 3
• white or pale pink watercolor
• fine brush for throat spotting
• deep green or red for the table

Palette: Soft White,Blush Pink,Magenta,Deep Green

Keep the lower lip petal larger and more ruffled than the others, matching every petal in size is the most common way orchids lose their distinctive shape.

Return to dried flowers with a full bouquet of dried hydrangeas, their papery clusters perfect for a muted winter palette. Sketch each hydrangea head as a loose cluster of small four-petaled florets, three or four heads grouped together with dried leaves filling the gaps.

Paint the florets in faded dusty blue, mauve and soft green-brown rather than the bright blue of fresh hydrangeas, working in small clusters of color rather than one even wash so the papery, uneven look comes through. Let the paint dry a little rough at the edges for texture.

Overworking is the risk with hydrangeas, since there are so many tiny petals to paint. Suggest most of the florets with quick dabs and only add full detail to a few at the front, the eye fills in the rest.

Try this again mixing in a few dried roses among the hydrangea heads for a fuller, more layered dried bouquet.

You Will Need

• round brush size 6
• dusty blue and mauve watercolor
• soft green-brown watercolor
• fine brush for a few detailed florets

Palette: Dusty Blue,Mauve,Faded Green Brown,Raw Umber

Dab most florets quickly and only fully detail a few near the front of the bouquet, over-rendering every tiny petal is what makes hydrangeas take too long.

Combine flowers with fruit for a bright still life of red ranunculus and a few clementines, leaves still attached. Sketch the ranunculus heads with their layered petals as before, then add two or three clementines nearby, round and slightly overlapping, with a glossy leaf or two attached to one.

Paint the ranunculus in saturated red and the clementines in warm orange, keeping a small highlight unpainted on each fruit to suggest its glossy skin. Add the attached leaves last in a fresh, slightly shiny green with a lighter streak down the center of each one.

Round fruit and round flowers side by side can flatten the whole composition. Overlap one clementine slightly behind a ranunculus bloom so the shapes interlock rather than sitting as separate circles on the page.

One tip for today: leave a small crescent of white paper on each clementine for shine, it is the single detail that makes citrus look glossy rather than matte.

You Will Need

• round brush size 6
• cadmium red and orange watercolor
• fresh green for leaves
• white gel pen or reserved white for fruit highlights

Palette: Cadmium Red,Cadmium Orange,Fresh Green,Gold Ochre

Overlap one clementine behind a ranunculus bloom rather than placing all shapes side by side, interlocking shapes read as a composed still life instead of scattered objects.

Settle into a quiet study of a cyclamen plant on a windowsill, its flowers held up on thin stems above heart-shaped leaves. Sketch the leaves first in loose, rounded heart shapes with pale marbled patterns, then add the flowers rising above on wiry stems, each petal swept backward.

Paint the leaves in two greens, a darker base with lighter marbled patches lifted out with a damp brush while still wet. The flowers go in last in bright pink or red, each petal painted with one quick upward stroke to capture their swept-back shape.

Cyclamen flowers lose their energy if painted too carefully. Use fast, confident single strokes for each petal rather than building them up slowly, the swept, windblown look is the whole charm of the flower.

If plant studies like this appeal to you, the single-subject approach here matches the technique used across expressive loose watercolor flowers.

You Will Need

• round brush size 6
• two greens for marbled leaves
• bright pink or red watercolor
• damp brush for lifting leaf pattern

Palette: Dark Green,Pale Sage,Magenta Pink,Soft White

Paint each cyclamen petal with one fast upward stroke instead of building it slowly, the energy of a quick stroke is what captures their swept-back shape.

Bring the whole scene to life with a woman arranging a bouquet at her kitchen counter. Sketch her in a simple, relaxed pose leaning over a vase, stems scattered on the counter in front of her, with a window or cabinet suggested loosely behind.

Paint the background kitchen in soft, muted tones first so it stays secondary, then build up the bouquet in front of her in the brightest colors on the page. Her figure can stay fairly simple, a flat wash for her sweater or apron with minimal facial detail.

The scattered stems on the counter are what sell the moment as mid-arrangement rather than finished. Leave two or three loose stems and a pair of scissors lying across the counter rather than placing every flower neatly in the vase.

Quick version: her hands, the vase and a few flowers in ten minutes. With forty, add the full kitchen background with a window and some morning light.

You Will Need

• round brush size 6
• muted tones for the kitchen background
• bright mixed colors for the bouquet
• fine brush for scattered stems

Palette: Soft Grey Blue,Cadmium Red,Sap Green,Warm Cream

Leave a few loose stems and a pair of scissors scattered on the counter rather than a finished arrangement, it keeps the whole scene feeling like a real moment.

Scale back down to a tiny vase holding just a sprig of rosemary and a few red berries, simple enough to finish quickly. Sketch a small, narrow vase first, then add the thin rosemary needles along one stem with a short cluster of berries tucked beside it.

Paint the rosemary in a slightly gray-green, using quick short strokes outward from the stem for each needle rather than one solid green shape. Add the berries last in bright red, each one a single confident dot with a tiny highlight left unpainted.

At this small scale, every extra stroke shows. Keep the whole piece to one stem of rosemary and a handful of berries rather than filling the vase, restraint is what keeps a tiny study looking intentional rather than sparse by accident.

One tip for today: tilt the vase very slightly off vertical in your sketch, a perfectly straight vase can look stiffer than one with the smallest natural lean.

You Will Need

• fine round brush size 2
• gray-green watercolor for rosemary
• bright red watercolor for berries
• small vase reference

Palette: Gray Green,Cadmium Red,Soft White,Raw Umber

Tilt the little vase slightly off vertical in your sketch, a tiny natural lean reads as more relaxed than a perfectly straight, centered shape.

Capture the moment just before a bouquet is finished with a florist wrapping flowers in kraft paper. Sketch hands at the center of the composition, holding the paper around a bundle of stems, with the flower heads visible rising above the wrap.

Paint the kraft paper first in warm brown, leaving the fold lines as thin unpainted creases, then paint the visible flowers above in bold reds and whites once the paper is dry. The hands can stay fairly simple, a warm skin tone with just a few shadow lines to suggest fingers gripping the paper.

Hands are the trickiest part of this scene. Simplify them into basic rounded shapes rather than detailing every knuckle, a loose, confident hand shape reads better at this scale than an overworked, anatomically precise one.

Try this scene again from a different angle, looking down over the florist’s shoulder at the bouquet instead of straight on.

You Will Need

• round brush size 6
• warm brown watercolor for kraft paper
• bold reds and whites for the flowers
• fine brush for hand shadows

Palette: Kraft Brown,Cadmium Red,Soft White,Warm Skin Tone

Simplify the hands into basic rounded shapes rather than detailing knuckles and nails, a loose hand shape holds up better at this scale than an overworked one.

Finish the series with a full bouquet sitting beside a stack of wrapped presents, pulling together everything from the list before it. Sketch the bouquet first in a simple vase, then build a small stack of two or three gift boxes beside it at varying sizes, each wrapped in a different simple pattern.

Paint the bouquet in your favorite combination from earlier ideas, reds, whites and greens work well here, then paint the presents in contrasting flat colors so they read clearly as separate shapes rather than blending into the flowers. A simple ribbon on each box goes in last.

Balancing two different subjects is the challenge in this final piece. Keep the bouquet as the taller, more detailed element and the presents lower and simpler, so the eye lands on the flowers first before noticing the gifts beside them.

Today’s tip: repeat one color from the bouquet in at least one gift box, a shared red or green ties the whole composition together.

You Will Need

• round brush size 8
• mixed bouquet colors from earlier ideas
• flat colors for gift boxes
• fine brush or pen for ribbon detail

Palette: Cadmium Red,Hooker’s Green,Soft White,Gold Ochre

Repeat one bouquet color somewhere in the gift wrapping, a shared color between flowers and presents ties the whole scene together instantly.

What to Do Next

Pick whichever bouquet or scene pulled you in first, tape down a sheet of cold press paper, and let the petals go in wet while the light is still good. Keep the rest of the list open on your phone for tomorrow, there is a new one waiting for every mood this winter.

Frequently Asked Questions

What paper works best for christmas flowers drawing in watercolor?

Cold press watercolor paper around 140lb works best, since it holds enough water for soft petal blends while still taking crisp pen or fine brush detail for stems and edges.

How do I keep red and green from turning muddy together?

Let one color dry completely before the other touches it, especially where petals meet pine or leaves, and always test the mix on scrap paper before applying it to the bouquet.

Do I need to draw a pencil sketch before painting flowers?

Yes, a light pencil sketch helps enormously, since flowers like roses and ranunculus have layered shapes that are hard to place accurately with paint alone on the first try.

What if I do not have the exact paint colors listed?

Mix close substitutes from a basic set, since a warm red plus a touch of brown gives burgundy, and blue plus yellow plus a touch of red gives most of the muted greens used here.

How long does one of these bouquet drawings take to finish?

Most finish in twenty to forty minutes depending on detail, with simpler single-flower studies closer to ten minutes and fuller scenes with figures or settings taking the full forty.
