37 Christmas Painting Ideas for Small Canvases and Holiday Gifts

Christmas painting ideas for small canvases work best when you pick one subject, block in the background first, and let the acrylic do most of the talking. This list gives you 37 of them, each one a self-contained scene you can carry from blank canvas to finished gift in a single afternoon.

Every idea below sits on a small canvas, the kind that fits on a mantel or ships flat in a mailer. Expect trees, cabins, birds and candlelight throughout, sized for one sitting with acrylic paint and a short list of brushes.

Single Ornament Close-Up

A single ornament fills the whole canvas, so there is no composition to plan and no background detail to manage. Block in a sphere shape in a mid tone red or gold first, keeping the edge perfectly round with a round brush.

Once that layer is dry, add a darker shadow on the lower edge and a bright highlight opposite it to give the sphere form. Finish with a thin hook and a ribbon loop. If you are new to acrylic, this is a good place to start before trying the easy acrylic painting ideas for beginners list. The usual mistake is skipping the shadow and leaving a flat circle instead of a sphere.

Candy Cane Stripes

A candy cane leaning on a diagonal is an easy warm-up shape, just two curved lines filled with color. Block the whole cane in white first and let it dry completely before adding stripes.

Paint the red stripes as diagonal bands that follow the curve of the cane, spacing them by eye rather than measuring. Add a small white highlight dot where the curve catches light. The common mistake is painting the stripes as straight horizontal bands instead of following the twist, which flattens the whole shape.

Sprig Of Holly Berries

A small sprig of holly keeps the shape count low: two or three pointed leaves and a cluster of berries. Block the leaves in a dark green first, mixing in a touch of blue so they do not read as bright or flat.

Add a lighter green edge to each leaf with a dry brush for texture, then dot in three or four red berries last with the tip of a round brush. Resist adding veins to every leaf, since one or two lines per leaf reads as more natural than a full network.

Pinecone Trio On Snow

Three pinecones resting on a patch of snow give you a simple still life with built in texture. Block each cone as a rough oval in a warm brown, then dry.

Build the scales with short, overlapping strokes of a slightly darker and slightly lighter brown, working from the base toward the tip. Dab a little white dry brush on the top edges of each cone and on the snow below. The usual mistake is making the cones too smooth and round, when real pinecones are uneven and slightly flattened on one side.

Mitten And Scarf Still Life

A single mitten draped over a folded scarf gives you soft fabric shapes without any fiddly detail. Block the mitten in one flat color first, then the scarf in a second color behind it.

Once dry, add folds to both pieces with a darker shade in the creases and a lighter shade along the raised edges. A row of simple stripes on the scarf adds pattern without much extra work. The mistake to avoid is painting both items in flat, even color, which makes the fabric look stiff rather than soft.

Hot Cocoa Mug With Marshmallows

A mug of hot cocoa is an easy rounded shape with a built in reason to add steam and texture. Block the mug as a simple cylinder, then paint the cocoa as a flat dark brown oval at the rim.

Dab in two or three marshmallows with thick, slightly textured white paint using a palette knife for a soft, puffy edge. Add wispy steam lines above the mug with a very thin, watered down white. The common mistake is painting the steam as stiff straight lines instead of loose curves.

String Of Holiday Lights

A string of lights against a dark background is mostly about contrast, which makes it forgiving for a first attempt at night scenes. Block the whole canvas in a deep navy or black first and let it dry fully.

Paint the wire as a thin curved line, then dab in bulbs of yellow, red and green along it, each one slightly uneven in size and spacing. Add a soft white glow dot over each bulb last with a nearly dry brush. The mistake to avoid is spacing every bulb perfectly even, which looks printed rather than strung.

Lone Tree In A Snowy Field

One bare or snow dusted tree in an open field is one of the simplest christmas painting ideas to compose, since there is only one shape to place. Start by blocking the sky and the snowy ground as two soft, blended bands, keeping the horizon low in the frame.

Once that is dry, paint the tree trunk and branches as dark, slightly uneven lines, thinner toward the tips. Dry brush a little white along the tops of the branches and across the foreground snow. The usual mistake is centering the tree exactly, which looks stiffer than placing it slightly off to one side.

Snowman In An Open Field

A snowman made of three stacked circles is an easy shape to get right and gives you a reason to practice shading on white. Block the three circles first, slightly overlapping, then let them dry before adding any detail.

Mix a soft blue or lavender for the shadow side of each circle rather than leaving the snowman pure white, which is what makes it read as rounded. Add a carrot nose, two coal eyes and a scarf last with small dabs of a round brush. Skipping the shadow tint is the most common mistake here, and it flattens the whole figure.

Birch Trees In Winter

A small cluster of birch trunks gives you an easy pattern to repeat with a lot of visual payoff. Block the background in soft, blurred color first, a muted blue or grey, and let it dry completely.

Paint each trunk as a simple vertical white or cream line, varying the width and spacing so they do not line up like a fence. Add short, dark horizontal marks at uneven intervals along each trunk for the bark. The mistake to avoid is spacing the trunks and marks too evenly, which makes the trees look stamped rather than grown.

Frosted Berries On A Windowsill

A small bowl of red berries on a windowsill combines a simple still life with a touch of winter texture. Block the bowl and the berries first in flat color, keeping the berry shapes loose and slightly irregular.

Once dry, add shadow and highlight to round out the bowl, then dot in frost texture with small flecks of white across the berries and the sill, not as a solid coat. A soft blurred blue shape behind the window suggests snow outside without any extra detail. The usual mistake is covering the berries in white instead of just flecking it on top.

Cardinal On A Snowy Branch

A cardinal gives you a rich pop of color against white and snow, which makes it one of the most popular christmas painting ideas on a small canvas. Block the bird as a simple rounded body shape in grey first, since a grey undercoat keeps the red from looking flat once it goes on top.

Layer the red over the grey in two coats, then add the black mask and beak last with a thin round brush. Paint the branch as a simple diagonal line with a few dabs of snow along the top. The common mistake is painting the red straight onto white canvas, which leaves it looking pale and chalky instead of rich.

Snowy Owl On A Branch

A snowy owl is mostly white, which sounds easy but actually needs careful shading to avoid looking like a flat paper cutout. Block the body as a rounded oval in a soft grey, not pure white, then build up lighter layers toward the center of the chest.

Add faint grey flecks across the wings with a dry brush for feather texture, then paint two small dark eyes and a tiny beak last. The branch underneath can stay simple, a single dark curved line with a little snow along the top. The mistake to avoid is starting with white paint straight on white canvas, since there is nothing to shade against.

Robin On A Frosty Fence Post

A robin on a fence post is a nice change of pace from the cardinal, since the warm orange breast reads differently against snow. Block the body shape first, keeping it smaller and rounder than a cardinal’s body, with a grey brown back and an orange front.

Paint the fence post as a simple vertical rectangle with a flat top, dusted with a line of white snow. Add the robin’s eye and beak last with tiny dots of a round brush. The usual mistake is painting the breast too bright red, which turns a robin into a second cardinal instead of its own bird.

Sled Leaning Against A Tree

An old wooden sled leaning against a tree trunk gives you a simple prop with built in character. Block the tree trunk first as a dark vertical shape, then paint the sled’s curved rails and flat wooden slats leaning against it.

Let the sled rails curve slightly rather than running them perfectly straight, which is what makes it look like real bent wood instead of a ruler. Add a mound of snow at the base to settle the whole scene into the ground. The common mistake is painting the rails too stiff and straight, which flattens the shape.

Gift Boxes Under A Tree

A small stack of wrapped gift boxes is a good exercise in simple geometric shapes with pattern on top. Sketch the boxes first the way the Christmas sketching ideas list suggests, blocking each box as a rectangle before adding any color.

Paint each box a different flat color, then add a two tone shadow and highlight to each visible side so they read as solid rather than paper flat. Finish with a ribbon and bow on top of each box last. A softly blurred green shape behind the stack suggests the tree without painting a whole one. The mistake to avoid is painting every box the same flat color, which makes the stack read as one shape.

Candlelit Window At Night

A single lit window in a dark wall is one of the simplest christmas painting ideas for a night scene, since most of the canvas is just one dark flat color. Block the whole canvas in a deep blue or black first and let it dry completely.

Paint the window frame as a simple rectangle, then fill it with warm yellow and orange for the glow inside, blending the edges softly into the dark wall rather than leaving a hard line. Add a small candle silhouette in the center of the glow last. The common mistake is giving the glow a sharp, crisp edge, which reads as a sticker instead of light.

Frosted Window With Candle Reflection

This one takes the candlelit window closer, as if standing right outside the glass with frost creeping across it. Block the warm glow and candle shape first, then dry completely before touching the frost.

Use the edge of a palette knife or an old card to scrape thin white lines across the glass in branching patterns, working from the corners inward. Keep the frost to the edges and corners rather than covering the whole pane, so the warm light still reads clearly through the center. The mistake to avoid is overworking the frost pattern until it hides the glow behind it.

Fireplace With Stockings

A small fireplace with stockings hanging over it packs several warm elements into one cozy scene. Block the brick or stone surround first with dabbed, uneven color so it does not read as a flat grey slab.

Paint the fire as a soft orange and yellow glow rather than solid red, keeping a pale yellow core at the base of the flames. Add two or three stockings along the mantel last, each a different color. The usual mistake is painting flames entirely orange or red, which loses the brightness that makes a fire glow.

Snow-Covered Barn

A simple red barn with a heavy snow covered roof is an easy structure built from a few flat shapes. Block the barn body as a rectangle with a triangular roof peak, painting the walls a muted red rather than bright red so it sits well against snow.

Once dry, paint the roof in thick white with a palette knife, building it up along the edge so it reads as heavy snow rather than a thin dusting. Add a dark doorway and a little snow along the ground last. The mistake to avoid is painting the roof snow too thin, which makes it look painted on rather than piled up.

Red Truck Carrying A Tree

A vintage red truck hauling a tree in its bed is one of the more charming christmas painting ideas on a small canvas, and it only needs a few boxy shapes. Block the truck body first as a simple cab and bed, keeping the proportions short and a little chunky rather than long and sleek.

Paint the tree in the bed as a loose green triangle with branches poking past the edges of the truck, then add the wheels and a little snow on the ground last. A soft blurred background keeps the focus on the truck. The common mistake is making the truck too long and narrow, which reads more like a van than a classic pickup.

Christmas Wreath On A Red Door

A wreath on a painted door gives you a round shape full of texture against a flat, simple background. Block the door as a solid rectangle of color first, then let it dry fully before adding the wreath on top.

Paint the wreath with short, dabbed strokes of two or three shades of green rather than one flat ring, which keeps it from looking like a solid green donut. Add a red bow at the bottom last with two or three confident strokes. The mistake to avoid is making the wreath a perfectly even circle, since real greenery clumps unevenly.

Front Porch With Wreath And Lantern

A small section of porch with a wreath on the door and a lantern glowing beside it combines several smaller ideas into one scene. Block the porch wall and door shapes first in flat color, keeping the overall composition simple rather than trying to fit a whole house in.

Add the wreath on the door and a lit lantern on a post or railing, painting its glow with the same soft blended edge used for a candlelit window. Snow along the porch floor and railing ties the elements together. The common mistake is adding too many extra details, which crowds a small canvas.

Snowy Cabin With Smoking Chimney

A small log cabin with smoke curling from the chimney is a satisfying structure to build from simple horizontal shapes. Block the cabin walls with short horizontal strokes to suggest log planks, then add a peaked roof heavy with white snow.

Paint one or two small lit windows in the walls using the same warm glow technique as a candlelit window. Add a thin, wispy line of grey smoke rising from the chimney last, keeping it loose rather than solid. The usual mistake is painting the smoke as a solid grey cloud, which looks heavier than real smoke drifting upward.

Church Steeple In Snow

A simple white church with a pointed steeple makes a clean, easy structure against a winter sky. Block the main building as a rectangle first, then add the steeple as a tall triangle on top, keeping both shapes straight and simple.

Paint the roof and steeple top with a layer of white snow, letting a little of the base color show through at the edges for texture. A pale, slightly pink or lavender sky behind the steeple gives it a quiet winter evening feel. The mistake to avoid is making the steeple too thin or too tall for the body of the church, which throws off the whole shape.

Row Of Village Houses At Dusk

A row of small houses along a snowy street gives you a chance to practice repeating a shape with small variations. Block each house as a simple rectangle with a triangle roof, varying the height and width of each one slightly so the row does not look stamped.

Paint one or two windows per house with the same warm glow used for a candlelit window, and vary which windows are lit. A soft gradient sky behind the rooftops, fading from dusky blue to a warm edge, ties the row together. The common mistake is making every house the same size and spacing, which reads as repeated rather than real.

Skating Pond At Dusk

A frozen pond with a few skaters in the distance adds gentle motion to a quiet winter scene. Block the ice as a flat pale blue or grey shape first, then add a soft reflective streak of lighter color across it before it dries.

Paint a line of bare trees around the edge of the pond, then dab in two or three tiny figures on the ice using simple dots and short strokes rather than detailed people. A warm sky at the horizon suggests the end of the day. The mistake to avoid is painting the ice as one flat, matte color with no reflective highlight.

Deer In Snowy Woods

A deer standing among bare trees gives the scene a quiet animal presence without much detail required. Block the deer’s body as one simple rounded shape first, then add the legs as thin strokes once the body shape feels right, since starting with legs tends to leave them too spindly.

Keep the deer mostly in silhouette or soft brown, with just a hint of a white tail and ear. A loose cluster of birch or pine trunks behind it, blurred slightly, keeps the focus on the animal. The common mistake is overworking the deer’s face, which is unnecessary at this distance.

Reindeer Silhouette At Dusk

A reindeer silhouette with full antlers against a colorful dusk sky is more about the sky than the animal itself. Block the sky first in a gradient from warm orange near the horizon to deep blue overhead, blending while still wet.

Once dry, paint the reindeer as a single dark silhouette shape, keeping the antlers asymmetrical rather than mirrored on both sides, since real antlers never match exactly. A simple snowy ridge line beneath the silhouette grounds the scene. The mistake to avoid is making the antlers perfectly symmetrical, which looks more like a logo than a living animal.

Empty Sleigh Resting In Snow

An empty old fashioned sleigh sitting in the snow is a quieter, more atmospheric subject than a full sleigh ride scene. Block the sleigh body as a curved shape first, letting the front runner curl upward in a loose, slightly uneven line rather than a stiff perfect arc.

Paint the wood a deep red or green, then add a little gold trim along the edge for detail. Settle the sleigh into a mound of white snow with soft shadows underneath. The common mistake is making the curved runner too rigid, which loses the bent wood look that makes a sleigh recognizable.

Christmas Tree Farm Rows

Rows of trees receding into the distance give you a simple way to practice depth on a small canvas. Block the trees closest to the front larger and darker, with each row getting smaller, lighter and softer in color as it moves toward the horizon.

Keep the tree shapes loose triangles rather than detailed branches, especially in the back rows where detail would just get lost. A pale winter sky above and a dusting of snow along the ground ties the rows together. The usual mistake is making every tree the same size, which flattens the sense of distance.

Moonlit Pine Forest

A forest of pines lit by a single moon is mostly about value rather than detail, which makes it a good exercise in working with a limited color range. Block the sky as a deep blue, then paint a soft glowing moon with a dry brush halo around it.

Paint the pine trees as simple dark triangles in front of the sky, varying their height so the tree line is uneven rather than a straight row. A thin strip of pale blue snow along the bottom catches a little moonlight. The mistake to avoid is making every tree the exact same height and shape.

Starry Night Over A Cabin

A small cabin tucked under a big sky full of stars puts most of the canvas into the sky itself. Block the cabin small and low in the bottom third of the canvas first, with one warm lit window.

Paint the sky above it with loose, swirling strokes of deep blue and purple, then dab in stars of varying size with the tip of a round brush, keeping the brightest ones near the top. A soft glow around a few larger stars adds depth. The common mistake is spacing the stars too evenly, like a printed dot grid, instead of scattering them naturally.

Snowy Mountain Village

A small village nestled at the base of snow capped mountains is one of the more involved christmas painting ideas here, since it layers several shapes into one scene. Start with the mountains in the far background, shading them in soft, layered values the way the acrylic painting mountains techniques describe, since getting that gradient right sets up the whole piece.

Once the mountains are dry, block in the village as small, simple house shapes along the base, with a few windows lit. Keep the houses smaller and less detailed than the mountains so the eye reads distance correctly. The mistake to avoid is making the village too detailed, which competes with the mountain backdrop instead of sitting quietly in front of it.

Winter Cardinal Pair On A Fence

A pair of cardinals on a fence rail builds on the single cardinal idea with a bit more composition to manage. Block both birds as simple rounded shapes first, placing them at different heights and angles rather than mirroring one on top of the other.

Paint the male in full rich red and the female in a softer tan with reddish accents, which is true to how cardinal pairs actually look and also keeps the painting from feeling repetitive. Add the fence rail and a little snow last. The mistake to avoid is painting both birds in identical poses, which reads as a copy and paste rather than two living birds.

Christmas Market Stall At Night

A small market stall strung with lights brings a bit of festive activity into a night scene without needing crowds of detailed people. Block the stall as a simple wooden structure first, a counter and a peaked awning, then add a string of small lights along the edge of the roof.

Paint a warm glow spilling out from inside the stall onto the snow below it. A few simple silhouette shapes nearby suggest shoppers without any facial detail. The common mistake is trying to paint full figures in detail, which is unnecessary and often looks stiffer than a simple silhouette.

Nighttime Sleigh Ride Under Stars

A sleigh pulled by a horse moving across open snow under a starry sky is the most involved piece on this list, since it combines motion, a figure and a night sky in one canvas. Block the horse and sleigh as simple dark silhouette shapes first, placing the horse’s legs mid stride rather than standing still, which gives the whole scene a sense of movement.

Paint the starry sky and snowy ground the same way used in the starry night cabin idea, then layer the silhouette on top once both are dry. The mistake to avoid is painting the horse with stiff, straight legs, which makes it look frozen rather than moving.

What to Do Next

Pick one of these christmas painting ideas, start with a small canvas no bigger than 8 by 10, and block in the background first before anything else touches the surface. The Lone Tree in a Snowy Field or the Candlelit Window are both good first choices if you want a quick win before moving on to something busier like the mountain village or the sleigh ride.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size canvas is best for these christmas painting ideas?

A 5 by 7 or 8 by 10 canvas works well for most of these, since the small size keeps each piece to one afternoon and still fits nicely as a gift or shelf decor. Larger scenes with more than one structure can go on an 11 by 14 instead.

How long should acrylic layers dry between steps?

Most acrylic layers feel dry to the touch within 20 to 30 minutes, which is enough time to move to the next layer on a small canvas. For thicker palette knife areas like snow, give it closer to an hour before adding detail on top.

How do I paint snow without it looking flat white?

Mix a small amount of blue or grey into white for shadowed areas of snow, saving pure white for the brightest highlights only. Dry brushing a thin layer over a darker base, rather than painting flat white straight onto canvas, also keeps snow looking textured.

Are these paintings good gifts if I am still learning acrylic?

Yes, small single subject scenes like these are forgiving because there is only one focal shape to get right. A slightly uneven tree or window glow still reads as charming and handmade, which suits a gift far better than a flawless print.

What order should I paint a snowy scene in?

Start with the sky or background, let it dry fully, then add the middle ground shapes like trees, cabins or hills. Finish with foreground details and any bright accents like a candle glow or a cardinal, since those small details read best painted last on a dry surface.
