33 Christmas House Drawing Ideas Inspired by Folk Ornaments and Painted Wooden Houses

42

Every christmas house drawing on this list starts the same comforting way: a fineliner outline, a few flat shapes of color, and a window that glows warmer than anything outside it. These houses borrow their charm from painted wooden ornaments and ceramic cottages, the kind with a chimney a little too big and a door a little too red, and that is exactly the point.

Below you will find thirty three small folk houses, each with its own little story: a cat on a roof, a dog building a snowman, a teahouse with steam curling from its chimney. Pick whichever one matches your mood tonight, keep your lines loose, and let the windows do the glowing.

Before You Start

• Sketch the house shape very lightly in pencil first, keeping walls, roof and chimney simple blocks before any fineliner touches the page.
• Outline only after the pencil shape feels right, using a fine black pen so the folk pattern details stay crisp under marker color.
• Pick a small palette of three or four alcohol markers per house and stay inside it, since folk houses read as cohesive, not busy.
• Leave the windows white or pale yellow until last, then add the glow with light strokes so it looks like warmth, not a flat block of color.
• Test a new marker color on scrap paper before it touches the roof or door, since alcohol ink spreads further than it looks on the nib.
• Keep snow and sky areas mostly empty paper, letting the house and its one small scene carry all the color and detail.

Start with the easiest house on the list, a simple red wooden cottage with white trim and a wreath on the door, because its boxy shape forgives a wobble or two. Pencil a square body, a triangle roof, and a centered door, then go over everything in fineliner before erasing the guide lines.

Fill the walls in a warm red marker, leave the trim boards white, and add a small green wreath with a red bow right at the center of the door. The classic beginner trap here is a roof that looks too flat, so angle the two roof planes slightly and add a chimney leaning just a touch for warmth.

Measure before you commit to proportions: hold your pen at arm’s length against the sketch and check that the roof takes up no more than a third of the total house height. If your reds run out, a deep coral or brick marker reads just as well as true red under warm window light.

Finish with one tip worth repeating on every house to come: always color the windows last, in pale yellow, so they sit on top as the glowing focal point.

You Will Need

• red and cream alcohol markers
• black fineliner
• white gel pen
• ruler for straight roof lines

Palette: Poppy Red,Warm Cream,Sage Green,Soft Gold

Try adding a thin dusting of white gel pen snow along the roofline and window sills after the marker dries, it lifts the whole house off the page.

Once the red cottage feels comfortable, try a ceramic-style white house glowing from inside, since it leans on light and shadow rather than bold color. Draw the house as a soft rounded block, almost like a real ceramic ornament, with small square windows cut into the walls.

Keep the walls white or the faintest cream, and let every window burn bright gold, as if a candle sits behind each pane. The eye naturally goes toward the glow, so place your light source on one side of the house and let the opposite wall sit a shade darker in soft grey marker shadow.

The common mistake is making all four walls equally bright, which flattens the shape, so commit to one lit side and one shaded side. If you don’t have a grey marker, a light sage works as a cool shadow tone instead.

Finish the roof in a soft dusted grey-blue to suggest snow sitting on real ceramic, and keep the outline thin so the white stays the star.

You Will Need

• grey and gold alcohol markers
• black fineliner
• white paper or cream cardstock
• kneaded eraser for soft pencil guides

Palette: Porcelain White,Pale Gold,Soft Grey,Dusty Blue

Look at an actual ceramic Christmas village house for reference if you have one, the way real glaze pools in corners gives you honest shadow shapes to copy.

Bring in a small figure now that the house shapes feel steady, starting with a gingerbread-colored cottage and a girl carrying a tiny tree toward its door. Sketch the house first, a warm brown cottage with icing-white trim, then add the girl as a simple rounded coat shape beside it, a little evergreen clutched in both arms.

Work the house in warm brown and caramel markers, keep her coat in a contrasting sage or red, and leave her face mostly a blank oval with only two small dots for eyes. Figures often go wrong at the hands, so skip drawing fingers altogether and let mittens read as soft round shapes instead.

Picture the light coming low and warm from the open door behind her, throwing a gold patch onto the snow at her feet. If brown markers run light, a warm orange underneath adds the gingerbread depth back in.

Keep her scaled smaller than the door so the house still reads as the main subject of the drawing.

You Will Need

• brown and caramel alcohol markers
• fineliner for figure outline
• red or sage marker for coat
• white gel pen for icing trim

Palette: Gingerbread Brown,Icing White,Sage Green,Warm Gold

Give the little tree one gold star at its tip in gel pen, it becomes the smallest, brightest detail in the whole scene and draws the eye right to her.

Move into pattern repetition with a blue townhouse wearing a bow on every single window, a good exercise in keeping small details consistent across a page. Draw the tall narrow house first, stacking two or three rows of evenly spaced windows up the front.

Color the walls a soft powder blue, then go back and add one identical red bow above each window using the same size and angle every time. The hardest part of this house is spacing, so lightly mark dots in pencil for each window position before you ink anything, keeping gaps equal.

Let the windows glow warm gold behind their bows, and finish the roof in deep navy or charcoal for contrast against all that blue. If red feels too bold for every bow, alternate red and cream for a softer rhythm up the facade.

Stand the drawing at arm’s length when you’re done and check the bows line up, uneven spacing is the one thing that breaks this house.

You Will Need

• soft blue and navy alcohol markers
• red marker for bows
• ruler or dot grid for window spacing
• fineliner

Palette: Powder Blue,Navy,Cherry Red,Warm Cream

Try drawing this one on graph paper underneath a sheet of marker paper, the faint grid showing through helps keep every window and bow perfectly level.

Have some fun with contrast by turning a striped beach hut into a Christmas house, mixing summery stripes with holiday color for something genuinely different. Draw the hut as a simple square cabin on short stilts or a low platform, then rule even horizontal stripes across the walls before inking.

Alternate the stripes in red and cream rather than the usual beach blue, and let a small wreath hang on the door to anchor the holiday feel. Stripes often go crooked freehand, so lay a ruler lightly in pencil first and ink over the line rather than trying to eyeball each one.

Add a short strand of string lights along the roofline, dotting each bulb in gold gel pen once the marker has dried. Swap red for a deep teal stripe if you want the beach hut feeling to stay stronger under the holiday touches.

Keep the sand or snow beneath it a plain pale blank so the striped walls stay the whole story.

You Will Need

• red and cream alcohol markers
• ruler
• fineliner
• gold gel pen for lights

Palette: Cherry Red,Warm Cream,Soft Gold,Sage Green

Add one striped beach umbrella folded shut and leaning by the door, a small nod to its summer life that most people will smile at before they even notice why.

Give the eye somewhere to travel with a tiny house on a hill and a cat perched right on the roof, watching the view. Start with a gentle curved hill shape in pencil, sit a small cottage near the top, then sketch the cat as a simple rounded silhouette along the roofline.

Keep the house itself modest in size, since the whole point of this one is the hill and the sky around it carrying the composition. The cat is the part people rush and ruin, so draw it as basic shapes first, an oval body and a triangle for ears, before adding any fineliner detail.

Place your horizon low on the page so the house and hill sit mostly in the upper two thirds, leaving plenty of soft sky above. If you don’t own a sage marker for the hill, a muted olive or moss green works just as well.

Finish the cat in solid black or warm grey so it reads clearly as a silhouette against the sky.

You Will Need

• sage or olive marker for hill
• black marker for cat silhouette
• fineliner
• soft blue marker for sky

Palette: Sage Green,Soft Blue,Warm Cream,Charcoal Black

Try this scene at dusk colors instead, a deep plum sky behind the hill makes the one lit window on the house feel even warmer by contrast.

Lean fully into the folk tradition now with a Swedish red cottage, its windows lit by a row of small candles rather than a single glow. Draw a simple square cottage with white corner trim, then mark three or four evenly spaced windows across the front wall.

Paint the walls a deep Falu red, the traditional Scandinavian shade, and in each window draw a tiny white candle with a flame rather than a flat wash of light. Candles drawn too large make the windows look crowded, so keep each one no taller than a third of the window’s height.

Think about where the light would actually fall: a candle glow should only brighten the glass immediately around it, leaving the window frame itself in shadow. Swap Falu red for a deep barn red if that’s what your marker set has, the effect barely changes.

Finish with a short strand of pine roping along the door frame in sage green for a traditional finishing touch.

You Will Need

• deep red alcohol marker
• white gel pen for candles
• fineliner
• sage marker for pine roping

Palette: Falu Red,Candle White,Sage Green,Soft Gold

Research actual Swedish cottage photos for the trim detail, the white corner boards and black roof are what make this read as Scandinavian rather than generic red house.

Sweeten things up with a pink bakery house, its window shelf lined with little cookies instead of candles or lamps. Sketch a rounded cottage shape, give it one large front window, and pencil in a row of small circles and star shapes along the sill before inking.

Color the walls a soft blush pink, then fill the window cookies in warm brown and cream so they stand out clearly against the glass. Overcrowding the window is the easy trap here, so leave a little breathing room between each cookie rather than packing the whole sill.

For a quicker ten minute version, keep it to three or four simple round cookies; for a fuller forty minute version, add a striped awning above the door and a small hanging sign with a cursive looking squiggle instead of real words.

Finish with a dusting of white gel pen snow across the roof to cool down all that pink.

You Will Need

• pink alcohol marker
• brown marker for cookies
• fineliner
• white gel pen

Palette: Blush Pink,Gingerbread Brown,Warm Cream,Soft Gold

Try a striped candy-shop awning over the window in red and cream, it instantly reads as a bakery before anyone even spots the cookies inside.

Step up the challenge with a row of colorful Amsterdam-style houses leaning gently against each other, each one lit for the holidays. Draw three or four tall narrow facades side by side, varying the roof peaks between stepped, pointed and curved so the row doesn’t feel repetitive.

Give each house its own color, perhaps dusty pink, sage, and cream, keeping the palette within your limited set so the row still feels cohesive rather than chaotic. The common mistake is making every house the same height, so stagger them slightly taller and shorter like a real canal street.

Picture the eye level sitting straight on, slightly below the rooftops, which makes the row feel like you’re standing right across the street looking up a little. If you only have a few markers, repeat one color twice across the row rather than forcing four completely different tones.

Finish with one string of lights looping across the top of all the houses to tie the whole row together.

You Will Need

• three or four alcohol marker colors
• fineliner
• ruler for straight facades
• gold gel pen for lights

Palette: Dusty Pink,Sage Green,Warm Cream,Soft Gold

Look at real Amsterdam canal house photos for roofline shapes, the stepped gable is the detail that makes this row instantly recognizable rather than just generic row houses.

Let pattern take over completely on a folk house painted with hearts and stars across every wall, closer to a piece of folk art than a realistic building. Draw a very simple house shape, since the decoration is going to carry all the interest here, then lightly pencil a grid of small hearts and stars across the front wall.

Ink each shape by hand rather than tracing, keeping them slightly imperfect and varied in size, which is exactly what makes real folk painting charming. Fill alternating shapes in red and sage so the pattern reads clearly rather than blurring into noise.

The trap here is overworking the roof and door with more pattern until it competes with the walls, so keep those two elements plain and let the wall pattern be the one loud feature. If hand-drawn stars feel tricky, a five-point star stencil keeps them consistent.

Finish with one larger star centered right above the door as a focal point.

You Will Need

• red and sage alcohol markers
• fineliner
• pencil for pattern grid
• star stencil if available

Palette: Cherry Red,Sage Green,Warm Cream,Soft Gold

Try this same pattern approach on a Christmas ornament shape afterward, the technique transfers directly and makes a nice matching pair with the house.

Take the composition upward with a tree house decorated with small hanging lanterns rather than a house sitting on the ground. Sketch a sturdy tree trunk first, add a few thick branches, then perch a small square cabin shape within the branches near the top.

Hang three or four little lanterns from the branches around the cabin using thin fineliner strings, coloring each one gold so they catch light even without a candle drawn inside. Branches drawn too thin won’t look like they could hold a house, so thicken the trunk and main limbs more than feels natural at first.

Picture the light source coming from inside the tiny cabin window, casting a warm glow onto the nearest branch and leaves, while the rest of the tree stays in cool shadow greens. A brown marker swapped for sepia ink works fine if your brown runs too orange.

Finish with a rope ladder dangling from the cabin door down through the branches.

You Will Need

• brown marker for trunk
• sage and gold alcohol markers
• fineliner
• white gel pen for ladder rope

Palette: Bark Brown,Sage Green,Soft Gold,Warm Cream

Try varying this one next time with a tree house lit entirely by lanterns and no window glow at all, a completely different mood built from the same shapes.

Bring a crowd into the scene with a little church and a small choir singing just outside its door. Draw a simple chapel shape first, a steep roof and a tall narrow steeple with a star on top, then add a cluster of four or five tiny figures standing in a loose semicircle nearby.

Keep the choir figures extremely simple, rounded coat shapes with small round heads, varying their coat colors between red, cream and sage so the group reads as a crowd rather than copies of one figure. Figures crowded too close together lose their shapes, so leave a sliver of space between each one even in a tight group.

Let the church’s stained glass window glow in two or three warm colors rather than plain gold, since a church window traditionally carries more pattern. If you don’t have a steeple reference handy, a simple triangle roof with a cross at the tip reads just as clearly.

Finish with small puffs of breath drawn in pale grey above each singer’s head for the cold air.

You Will Need

• red cream and sage markers for coats
• gold and soft blue for stained glass
• fineliner
• pale grey marker for breath puffs

Palette: Cherry Red,Warm Cream,Sage Green,Soft Gold

Look at the way real stained glass splits light into panels, drawing two or three thin black lines across the church window before coloring gives it that same divided glow.

Settle into a mountain mood with a snowy chalet, a pair of skis leaning casually by its front door. Draw a wide low cottage with a steeply pitched roof, thick enough to hold a heavy blanket of snow along the top edge, then add two thin ski shapes propped against the wall.

Color the chalet in warm wood brown with white trim, and bank the snow thick and soft along the roofline and window boxes using white gouache or gel pen over the marker once it’s dry. The roof often ends up looking too thin for snow, so draw it noticeably thicker than you think it should be before adding the white on top.

Picture the afternoon sun sitting low behind the chalet, throwing a long blue shadow from the skis across the snow in front of the door. A pale blue marker works for that shadow if you don’t have a dedicated shadow grey.

Finish with a small string of lights along the window box for a last warm touch.

You Will Need

• wood brown and white alcohol markers
• white gel pen or gouache for snow
• pale blue marker for shadow
• fineliner

Palette: Wood Brown,Snow White,Dusty Blue,Soft Gold

Try adding a second pair of skis in a different color leaning next to the first, it hints at more than one person inside without drawing a single figure.

Add some real charm with a log cabin and a dog busy building a snowman out front, since a small animal doing something always warms up a drawing. Sketch the cabin first using simple horizontal lines across the walls for log texture, then draw a round two-tier snowman beside it with a dog sitting or pawing at the base.

Keep the dog’s pose simple, a rounded body and one raised paw against the snowman’s bottom ball, rather than attempting a complicated running pose. Overdetailing the dog’s fur is the easy mistake, so use a few short fineliner strokes along the edges instead of trying to draw every hair.

For a quick ten minute version, stop at the cabin and snowman alone; for the fuller forty minute version, add a scarf around the snowman’s neck and a small stick for each arm, plus smoke curling from the cabin chimney.

Finish with warm gold light spilling from the cabin’s one window onto the snow nearby.

You Will Need

• brown marker for log cabin
• white gel pen for snowman
• black marker for dog
• fineliner

Palette: Log Brown,Snow White,Charcoal Black,Soft Gold

For more dog drawing practice beyond this one scene, a focused set of simple poses helps a lot, and this guide to dog pencil drawing ideas for beginners is a good place to borrow a few from.

Switch the whole silhouette with a lighthouse painted like a candy cane, trading the usual house shape for a tall striped tower. Draw a slim cylindrical tower with a small lamp room and pointed roof on top, then rule even diagonal stripes down the length of it before inking.

Color the stripes alternating red and white exactly like a real candy cane, and let the lamp room glow gold at the very top as its one light source. Diagonal stripes drawn freehand tend to drift off angle, so pencil in a few light diagonal guidelines down the tower first and ink over them.

Picture the light source coming from inside the lamp room itself, so only the top section of the tower gets a warm gold wash while the rest stays in clean red and white stripe. If red stripes feel too bold against the sky, a soft coral works just as well.

Finish with gentle wave lines in soft blue at the base to suggest the shoreline.

You Will Need

• red and white alcohol markers
• gold marker for lamp room
• ruler for diagonal stripe guides
• fineliner

Palette: Candy Red,Snow White,Soft Gold,Dusty Blue

Try this lighthouse at night instead of dusk, a deep navy sky behind the glowing lamp room makes the red and white stripes pop even harder.

Keep the unusual silhouettes going with a houseboat, a small Christmas tree strapped to its flat roof. Draw a simple rectangular boat hull sitting low in gently rippled water, then build a small cabin on top with one round window and the tree perched just beside the chimney.

Color the hull a deep sage or navy, the cabin a warm cream, and let the tree carry small dots of red and gold for ornaments. Water drawn as one flat blue block looks lifeless, so add two or three curved horizontal lines beneath the boat to suggest gentle ripples instead.

Picture the cabin window glowing warm gold against the cool evening water around it, which does most of the mood-setting work on this piece. If navy feels too dark for the hull, a deep teal reads just as well on the water.

Finish with a small string of lights running from the tree down to the bow of the boat.

You Will Need

• navy or sage marker for hull
• cream marker for cabin
• gold marker for tree lights
• fineliner for water ripples

Palette: Deep Teal,Warm Cream,Soft Gold,Dusty Blue

Look at real canal houseboats for reference on the cabin roofline, most have a gentle curve rather than a flat edge, and that small curve sells the whole idea.

Shift from solid walls to glass with a greenhouse, its rows of poinsettias visible right through the panes. Draw a simple peaked glass structure using thin fineliner lines to divide the walls into a grid of panes, then fill several panes with small red poinsettia shapes rather than coloring the whole wall solid.

Keep most panes a pale soft blue-grey to suggest glass and reflected sky, and let only a handful hold the bright red flowers, which keeps the composition from turning into a solid red block. Grid lines drawn too perfectly even can look stiff, so let a few panes vary slightly in size the way a real greenhouse frame does.

Picture an even, diffused light coming through the whole glass roof rather than one direction, since greenhouses glow all over rather than from one window. A pink marker substitutes fine for red poinsettias if that’s what’s on hand.

Finish with a small watering can or stack of pots resting just outside the glass door.

You Will Need

• red or pink marker for poinsettias
• pale blue-grey marker for glass
• fineliner for pane grid
• sage marker for leaves

Palette: Poinsettia Red,Pale Glass Blue,Sage Green,Warm Cream

Try researching real poinsettia leaf shapes before drawing them small, the pointed, slightly ragged petal edge is what reads as poinsettia rather than a generic red flower.

Take on a more detailed facade with a Victorian house, a small family gathered together on its porch. Draw a tall narrow house with ornate trim along the roofline and a wraparound porch, then add three simple figures standing close together near the front steps.

Color the house in two complementary tones, perhaps sage walls with cream trim, and dress the family in a small mix of red, cream and sage so they tie visually back into the house itself. Ornate trim details can quickly spiral out of control, so limit yourself to one decorative trim pattern repeated along the roofline rather than inventing a new one for every edge.

Picture the porch light glowing warm above the family, casting soft shadows down across the steps toward the viewer. If cream trim paint feels too pale against sage, a warm ivory works as a slightly warmer substitute.

Finish with a wreath on the door and a single lantern hanging from the porch ceiling.

You Will Need

• sage and cream alcohol markers
• fineliner for trim detail
• red marker for family coats
• white gel pen for lights

Palette: Sage Green,Warm Cream,Cherry Red,Soft Gold

For more cozy scene-building beyond just the house itself, this roundup of Christmas scene drawing ideas has good ways to fill a porch or yard with small life.

Bring a little action into the yard with a farmhouse, a red truck parked out front hauling home a fresh cut tree. Draw a wide simple farmhouse first, then sketch the truck’s boxy shape beside it with the tree’s branches poking up out of the truck bed.

Color the farmhouse in soft white or cream with a dark roof, then let the truck carry the boldest red in the whole piece so it becomes the clear focal point against the quieter house. Trucks drawn without enough wheel detail look like they’re floating, so give each wheel a visible dark tire and a hint of a hubcap.

Picture late afternoon light coming from low on the horizon, warming the truck’s hood and throwing a long shadow back toward the house. A deep rust orange works in place of red if that’s the truck color you have on hand.

Finish with a short rope securing the tree trunk to the truck bed for a believable detail.

You Will Need

• red marker for truck
• white or cream for farmhouse
• dark grey for wheels and roof
• fineliner

Palette: Barn Red,Farmhouse Cream,Charcoal Grey,Sage Green

Try swapping the truck for an old tractor next time you draw this scene, the same basic shapes work with just a different cab silhouette on top.

Add a touch of whimsy with a post office house, small letters appearing to fly right out of its chimney into the sky. Draw a compact brick-red cottage with a mail slot on the door, then scatter four or five simple envelope shapes trailing upward from the chimney in a loose curving line.

Color the house a deep brick red with white trim, and keep the flying envelopes plain cream with a tiny red stamp dot in one corner, nothing more detailed than that. Letters that are too uniform in size look mechanical, so vary their sizes slightly as they drift further from the chimney, smaller as they rise.

Picture the chimney itself glowing faintly gold where the letters emerge, as if the warmth inside is what’s lifting them out. A soft terracotta substitutes well for brick red if your palette runs more muted.

Finish with one letter mid-flight catching a gust, tilted at a different angle than the rest for movement.

You Will Need

• brick red marker
• cream marker for envelopes
• red pen dot for stamps
• fineliner

Palette: Brick Red,Warm Cream,Soft Gold,Charcoal Black

Try adding a small curved dotted line behind each envelope like a gentle flight path, it reads instantly as motion without needing any extra detail.

Slow the pace back down with a tiny bookshop house, a cat curled up reading in its front window. Draw a narrow cottage with one large display window, then fill that window loosely with a stack of simple book shapes and a round cat silhouette settled among them.

Color the shop front a dusty plum or sage, with warm gold light spilling out around the books and cat, since this scene depends entirely on that cozy glow. Books drawn with too much spine detail slow you down for no visual gain, so keep them as simple rectangles in varied heights and colors instead.

Picture the cat as a simple loaf shape with closed eyes, tucked right between two leaning books rather than sitting separately from them. If plum feels too bold, a deep burgundy or even sage works just as well for the shop front.

Finish with a small hanging sign above the door, left blank or with a tiny scribbled line standing in for text.

You Will Need

• plum or sage marker for shop front
• gold marker for window glow
• black marker for cat silhouette
• fineliner

Palette: Dusty Plum,Soft Gold,Charcoal Black,Warm Cream

For more small animal companions to pair with a cozy house scene, this set of Christmas sketchbook ideas has plenty of little creatures getting ready for the holidays.

Play with the ornament logic directly now and build a whole house out of stacked wrapped presents instead of wood or brick. Draw the overall house silhouette lightly in pencil first, then divide it into sections representing different gift boxes, each one wrapped in its own pattern and bow.

Color each box section differently, mixing stripes, dots and solid color between red, cream and sage so the house reads as a cheerful patchwork rather than one confusing mess. The trap here is making every box the same pattern, so vary stripe direction and dot size clearly between neighboring sections.

Picture a single large bow sitting right where the front door would normally be, doubling as both door and decoration. If your pattern choices feel overwhelming, limit the whole house to just two patterns repeated rather than inventing a new one for every box.

Finish with a small chimney made from one more wrapped box standing upright.

You Will Need

• red cream and sage markers
• fineliner for patterns
• white gel pen for dots and stripes
• ribbon reference photo if available

Palette: Cherry Red,Warm Cream,Sage Green,Soft Gold

Try sketching real wrapped presents under the tree as quick reference first, copying how ribbon folds over a box edge translates directly into a convincing door-bow.

Change the whole context of the drawing with a paper house garland strung across a window, several tiny folk houses linked in a row rather than one house alone. Draw four or five very small simple house silhouettes connected by a thin string, varying the roof shape slightly on each one.

Color each little house a different soft tone from your palette, red, sage, cream and dusty blue, so the garland reads as a cheerful mixed set rather than repeats. Making every house identical is the easy shortcut that flattens the charm, so change at least the window shape or chimney position on each one.

Picture these houses as flat, evenly lit paper cutouts strung in front of a window, with no deep shadow or glow, closer to a paper decoration than a lit building. A warm cream backing behind the whole string helps separate the garland visually from a busier background.

Finish by drawing the string itself with a gentle sag between each house rather than a straight taut line.

You Will Need

• mixed alcohol markers across palette
• fineliner for string and houses
• ruler for light placement guide
• white gel pen for highlights

Palette: Cherry Red,Sage Green,Dusty Blue,Warm Cream

Look at real paper garland decorations for the sag of the string between each shape, a too-straight line is the detail that gives away a drawn garland instantly.

Return to a single cozy house with a teahouse, steam curling from a teapot-shaped chimney instead of an ordinary brick stack. Draw a small round cottage, then shape its chimney like an actual teapot, spout and all, with soft curling steam lines rising from the opening.

Color the cottage in warm cream or soft pink, and keep the teapot chimney a contrasting sage or blue so it reads clearly as its own shape against the roof. Steam drawn as one solid line looks stiff, so use two or three thin wavy fineliner strokes that fade out as they rise.

Picture the window glowing warm gold just below the chimney, suggesting a kettle just taken off the stove inside. If pink walls feel too sweet for the scene, a soft terracotta keeps the same cozy warmth with less sugar.

Finish with a small cup and saucer sitting on the windowsill outside, steam rising from that too.

You Will Need

• cream or pink alcohol marker
• sage or blue marker for teapot chimney
• fineliner for steam lines
• gold marker for window

Palette: Blush Pink,Sage Green,Soft Gold,Warm Cream

Try drawing a real teapot from a few angles on scrap paper first, getting the spout and handle proportions right there makes the chimney version click into place much faster.

Keep the ornament feeling strong with a plain little house wearing one giant bow tied right across its roof, as if the whole building was gift-wrapped. Draw a simple cottage shape first, then sketch a large bow with two wide loops and trailing ribbon ends draped over the roof peak.

Color the house in a quiet cream or sage so the bow, colored bold red, stays the clear star of the composition. Bows drawn too symmetrically can look stiff, so let one loop sit slightly larger or looser than the other, and let the ribbon tails trail down at slightly different lengths.

Picture the ribbon’s folds catching a little shadow where they cross over themselves, a few short darker red strokes along the inner curve of each loop. A deep maroon marker works as a shadow tone layered right over the red if you don’t have a true darker red on hand.

Finish with a small gift tag hanging from the ribbon, left blank or with a single scribbled line.

You Will Need

• cream or sage marker for house
• bold red marker for bow
• darker red or maroon for shadow folds
• fineliner

Palette: Warm Cream,Sage Green,Cherry Red,Deep Maroon

Try tying the bow around the whole house instead of just the roof next time, wrapping down both sides like real ribbon on a box for a bolder variation.

Bring in a bigger animal visitor with a log cabin, a moose standing quietly just outside while smoke curls from the chimney above. Draw the cabin using short horizontal lines for log texture, then sketch the moose as a tall simple body with long legs and a basic antler shape, standing a little apart from the house.

Color the cabin warm brown with white-capped snow along the roof, and keep the moose in a muted grey-brown so it doesn’t compete with the house for attention. Antlers drawn too delicately disappear against the sky, so thicken each branch of the antler shape more than feels right at first.

Picture the chimney smoke drifting in the same direction as the wind would push snow, a gentle diagonal rather than a straight vertical line, which adds believability to the whole scene. A soft taupe works as a substitute moose color if grey-brown isn’t in your set.

Finish with a scattering of small pine trees between the cabin and the moose for depth.

You Will Need

• brown marker for cabin
• grey-brown marker for moose
• white gel pen for snow
• fineliner

Palette: Log Brown,Taupe Grey,Snow White,Sage Green

Look at a real moose photo before drawing the antlers, the flat paddle shape rather than pointed branches is the detail that keeps it from reading as a deer instead.

Go fully fairytale with a mushroom house, its round red-capped roof sitting over a tiny round door in a bed of soft snow. Draw a simple dome-shaped cap first, then a short rounded stem beneath it to form the body of the house, with one small arched door and window cut into the stem.

Color the cap a warm red with small white dot spots, and keep the stem a soft warm cream so it reads clearly as separate from the cap above. The spots are the part people overdo, so keep them irregular in size and loosely scattered rather than in a tidy repeating pattern.

Picture gentle snow mounded around the base of the stem, with one glowing gold window set into the curve just above it. If true red runs too flat, a coral red keeps the mushroom playful rather than heavy.

Finish with a tiny curling smoke wisp from a chimney poking out of the very top of the cap.

You Will Need

• red marker for mushroom cap
• white gel pen for spots
• cream marker for stem
• fineliner

Palette: Toadstool Red,Warm Cream,Soft Gold,Snow White

Try varying the cap color to deep sage or soft blue on a second version, the mushroom shape stays charming in almost any color from the palette.

Return to an urban setting with a city brownstone, its front stoop climbing up to a door dressed with a simple wreath. Draw a tall narrow facade in warm brown, then add a short run of front steps with a black iron railing leading up to the entrance.

Keep the brownstone’s windows evenly spaced in two or three rows, each glowing gold, and let the railing stay a crisp black line against the warm wall color for contrast. Stairs drawn flat and straight on look wrong, so angle the steps slightly as if seen just a touch from the side.

Picture early evening light, warm from the windows but cool and blue in the shadows cast by the stairs onto the sidewalk below. A deep rust brown substitutes for classic brownstone if your palette runs warmer than cool.

Finish with a simple wreath on the door and one small potted evergreen on the top step.

You Will Need

• warm brown alcohol marker
• black marker for railing
• gold marker for windows
• fineliner

Palette: Brownstone Rust,Charcoal Black,Soft Gold,Dusty Blue

Add a sense of arrival with a ski lodge, two or three tiny skiers gliding in toward its glowing entrance. Draw a wide timber lodge with a steep snow-capped roof, then sketch the skiers as simple standing figures with thin ski lines beneath their feet, angled slightly toward the building.

Color the lodge in warm timber brown with white window trim, and keep the skiers’ jackets in small pops of red and sage so they stand out against the snow. Figures in motion often end up stiff, so lean their bodies slightly forward and angle the skis so they aren’t perfectly parallel to the ground.

Picture the lodge’s large front window glowing warm and wide, almost like a fireplace seen from outside, since that glow is what the skiers are heading toward. A simple grey wash works for distant mountains behind the lodge if you want added depth.

Finish with small puffs of snow kicked up behind each skier’s trail.

You Will Need

• timber brown marker for lodge
• red and sage for skier jackets
• white gel pen for snow
• fineliner

Palette: Timber Brown,Cherry Red,Sage Green,Soft Gold

Try angling all the skiers toward the same point on the lodge rather than scattering their directions, it instantly reads as a group arriving together rather than wandering separately.

Bring back some storefront charm with a toy shop house, a rocking horse displayed proudly in its front window. Draw a narrow cottage shop front with one large window, then sketch a simple rocking horse shape inside it, a curved rocker base beneath a basic horse silhouette.

Color the shop front in cream or soft blue, and paint the rocking horse in warm red and white so it pops clearly against the cooler shop wall. Horse shapes drawn too realistically slow this down for no real gain, so keep the body and legs simple blocky curves rather than careful anatomy.

Picture a scattering of other small toy shapes around the horse in the window, a drum, a small train, nothing needing much more than a basic outline and one flat color each. If red and white feel too plain for the horse, add a sage saddle blanket for a folk touch that ties back to the house palette.

Finish with a small hanging shop sign above the door, left blank or with one scribbled line.

You Will Need

• cream or blue marker for shop front
• red and white for rocking horse
• sage marker for saddle blanket
• fineliner

Palette: Soft Blue,Cherry Red,Snow White,Sage Green

Look at a real carved rocking horse for the curve of the rocker base, getting that gentle curve right is what makes the toy read clearly even at a small size.

Return to a quieter folk mood with a Scandinavian house, simple paper stars hanging in every window instead of lights or candles. Draw a plain rectangular cottage, white or pale cream, then sketch a small five or six point star shape centered in each window before adding any color.

Keep the walls a clean white or soft grey, letting the stars themselves carry the only warm color in gold or soft yellow against the cool wall tone. Stars drawn freehand often end up lopsided, so lightly pencil a small cross guide inside each window first to keep the points roughly even.

Picture a single sprig of pine resting along the windowsill below each star for a traditional touch, drawn as a few simple short green strokes rather than detailed needles. A pale straw yellow substitutes well for gold if your marker set runs more muted.

Finish with a plain dark roof to frame all that quiet white and gold.

You Will Need

• white or pale grey marker
• gold or straw yellow marker for stars
• sage marker for pine sprigs
• fineliner

Palette: Porcelain White,Pale Gold,Sage Green,Charcoal Grey

Try this house in a true blue-grey dusk background, the pale star shapes glow far more clearly against a darker sky than a plain white one.

Add some pattern richness with a Moroccan-tile house, its walls covered in small repeating geometric tiles and strung with fairy lights. Draw the house as a simple cube shape with an arched doorway, then divide the front wall into a light grid and fill each square with a small repeating tile motif.

Keep the tile pattern to just two colors, perhaps sage and soft blue, alternating in a simple checkerboard or diamond rhythm so it stays readable rather than overwhelming. Patterns rushed without planning tend to drift out of alignment, so count your grid squares before inking a single tile.

Picture a loose string of fairy lights looping across the top of the arched door, each small bulb a tiny dot of gold rather than anything elaborate. A warm terracotta wall color works underneath the tiles if you want more warmth than plain cream gives.

Finish with a single potted palm or small evergreen beside the arched doorway for contrast.

You Will Need

• sage and blue markers for tile pattern
• gold marker for fairy lights
• terracotta marker for wall base
• fineliner for pattern grid

Palette: Sage Green,Dusty Blue,Terracotta,Soft Gold

Research real Moroccan zellige tile photos before drawing the pattern, even a simple diamond repeat looks far more convincing once you’ve seen how the real tiles interlock.

Close the whole list with the most ornament-like idea of all, a tiny house sitting inside a snow globe, glass dome and all. Draw a simple glowing cottage first, small and centered, then circle it with a clean round glass dome outline and a short wooden or gold base beneath.

Color the house with its usual warm window glow, but keep the dome itself nearly colorless, just a thin curved highlight line along one side in white gel pen to suggest glass catching light. Overdrawing the glass with too many reflection lines makes it look cracked rather than clear, so use no more than two or three clean curved highlight strokes.

Picture small white dots scattered inside the dome for falling snow, denser near the bottom and sparser near the top, which reads instantly as a shaken globe. A soft grey base substitutes well for gold if that fits the rest of your folk house series better.

Finish with a tiny ribbon or bow painted onto the base as a last ornament touch.

You Will Need

• white gel pen for glass highlight and snow
• gold or grey marker for base
• fineliner for dome outline
• mixed markers for the house inside

Palette: Soft Gold,Snow White,Cherry Red,Charcoal Grey

What to Do Next

Pick one house from this list, the one that made you want to reach for a pen first, and start with a light pencil sketch on marker paper tonight. Keep the palette small, let the windows glow last, and you will have a finished folk house before the evening is over.

Frequently Asked Questions

What paper works best for a christmas house drawing with alcohol markers?

Smooth, slightly thick marker paper works best, since it resists the ink bleeding through while still letting colors blend cleanly. Regular printer paper buckles and lets color bleed through to the next page, so a dedicated marker pad saves both your drawing and the page behind it.

Do I need to draw the whole house in pencil first?

Yes, a light pencil sketch first keeps proportions correct before any ink goes down. Block in the basic house shape, roof, door and windows loosely, check the overall balance, then trace over it in fineliner and erase the pencil once the ink is fully dry.

How do I keep the folk pattern details from looking too busy?

Limit any single house to one or two repeating patterns rather than several competing ones. Keep the roof or door plain if the walls carry pattern, and stick to your chosen color set of red, cream, sage and soft blue so the pattern reads as decoration, not clutter.

What if I don’t have alcohol markers?

Colored pencils or gouache work as a direct substitute, just expect a softer, more textured finish rather than the flat glassy color alcohol markers give. Watercolor also works well for the warm window glow if you let the yellow bleed gently at the edges.

How do I make the windows look like they are glowing?

Color the window pale yellow or gold last, after the rest of the house is finished, so it sits visually on top as the brightest point. A soft halo of the same color lightly blended just outside the window frame strengthens the glow even further.
