I love this kind of watercolor and ink tutorial more than almost anything else in my sketchbook, because a tiny street corner can hold a whole afternoon of mood: chipped paint, a striped awning, a chair pulled out at an angle. Each scene below is small enough to finish in one sitting, and the ink lines mean your washes can stay loose and a little wild without the picture falling apart.

Below you will find thirteen little scenes, from a corner cafe with two chairs outside to a bakery cart tucked into a square. Every one comes with a full worksheet and a stage by stage plan, so you can pick whichever corner calls to you today and paint it start to finish.

Before You Start

• Use paper with at least a bit of weight (around 300 gsm or cold press) because ink and wash together put down more water than a dry sketch alone.
• Draw your pencil lines very lightly first, just enough to place the cafe tables, stalls or awnings, so the ink pen has a guide without fighting you later.
• Let the ink dry fully before any water touches it, at least two or three minutes, so the lines stay crisp instead of bleeding into the wash.
• Mix your cream and terracotta washes on a scrap of the same paper first, since both colours look darker wet than they will once dry.
• Keep your first washes thin and watery, almost like tinted water, and save the strongest terracotta and green for the smaller accents near the end.
• Leave small patches of bare white paper for shine on glass, metal chair legs or ceramic jugs, since watercolor cannot lift back to white easily once painted.

Corner Cafe With Two Chairs

Start this one with a light pencil pass, just enough to place the awning, the door and those two chairs leaning slightly toward each other. Keep the lines loose at this stage since the ink is what will really define the cafe front in a minute.

Once the pencil feels right, go over everything in fine black ink, including the brick texture and the awning stripes, then wait a few minutes until it is fully dry before any water touches the page. A thin cream wash goes down first over the whole wall and pavement, wet on wet so it settles unevenly, which actually helps the stone look aged.

Layer terracotta onto the awning and the chair seats once that cream is dry, then drop a small patch of sage green onto the potted plant by the door. If your ink smears at all when wet, your liner probably was not waterproof, so test a scrap first and swap to a different pen if needed.

Finish with deeper umber shadows under the chairs and in the awning folds, and a dab of white gel pen for the shine on the window glass. The tip that saves this scene every time: keep the shadow under each chair leg separate and dark, since that is what makes them look like they are really standing on the ground.

Flower Stall With Tulip Buckets

Sketch the stall lightly first: the frame, the rows of buckets, and just loose round shapes where the tulip heads will sit. There is no need to draw every petal in pencil, since the ink and later washes will carry that detail.

Ink the whole structure next, including the bucket rims and the stems, and let it dry before reaching for water. A thin cream wash across the awning and wall behind sets a warm background without competing with the flowers later.

Once dry, brush terracotta onto the wooden counter and the bucket sides, then move to the fun part: drop pink and soft yellow loosely onto the tulip heads while the paper is still a little damp, letting the colours bleed into each other. This wet on wet blending is where most beginners either go too timid or too heavy, so test your brush load on scrap paper first until the colour spreads but does not flood the shape.

Finish with a confident green for every stem and leaf, a shadow line under the stall counter, and tiny white gel pen flicks on a few petal edges for light. If you want more flower ideas beyond this stall, the simple watercolor flowers ideas page is worth a look too.

Fruit Stand Under an Awning

Pencil in the awning line, the crates, and simple round or oval shapes for the fruit before touching any ink. Keep the shapes a little varied in size so the stand does not look too neat or stiff.

Ink everything once the pencil feels settled, giving each piece of fruit its own small outline, then let it dry completely. The first wash is a thin cream over the awning and the wall behind the stand, applied wet on wet so it settles with a little texture.

Once that layer is dry, paint the wooden crates and counter in warm terracotta, then move on to the fruit itself with loose orange and red washes, letting each piece vary slightly in tone rather than painting them all the same. This is where the watercolor fruit tutorial lessons are a nice companion if you want more practice with citrus and berries on their own.

Add green to any leafy crate edges or stems, then deepen the shadow under the awning with burnt umber so the stand reads as shaded from above. Finish with white gel pen dots for shine on the roundest fruits, and remember the tip that matters most here: vary your fruit colours even within one wash, since uniform orange everywhere flattens the whole stand.

Bookstall by the River

Sketch the stall lightly first, then place the river behind it as just a simple horizontal band, with a few loose rectangles standing in for stacked books. It helps to vary the book stack heights slightly so the rows feel real rather than a straight wall of pencil boxes.

Ink the stall frame, the book spines and the river’s edge, then let it dry before any wash goes near it. The first colour is a thin cream over the stall boards and the distant bank, followed once dry by a soft blue grey wash on the water only, kept wet on wet so it moves gently like real river light.

Once both are dry, bring terracotta and ochre onto the book stacks, varying the mix slightly from book to book so no two covers match exactly. A small tree or patch of greenery behind the stall gets a quiet green wash, which balances all that warm paper and leather tone nicely.

Finish with a deep umber shadow under the stall table and a few white gel pen flicks for shine on the water’s surface. If the blue grey wash dries too flat and even, go back in with a slightly damp brush and lift a thin line of colour off for instant shimmer.

Bakery Cart on the Square

Pencil the cart first: two wheels, a simple canopy shape, and loose round or oval shapes piled up for the bread. Keep the bread shapes a little irregular since real loaves never stack in neat rows.

Ink the whole cart, wheels included, and give each loaf its own small outline before letting it dry fully. A thin cream wash goes over the canopy and the paving stones of the square behind, settling unevenly for a worn look.

Once dry, paint the cart’s wooden body and wheels in warm terracotta, then move to the bread itself with a loose golden brown wash, letting some spots stay lighter for crust highlights later. If your brown looks muddy, you likely mixed too many colours into it, so keep this wash to one or two pigments only.

A small flower box on the cart gets a quiet green wash, and the final stage deepens the shadow under the wheels with burnt umber so the cart feels grounded on the stones. White gel pen dabbed onto the crusts finishes the shine, and the tip worth remembering here is to leave more bare paper between loaves than feels natural, since that gap is what separates one loaf from the next once the ink lines are hidden under wash.

Cafe Table With Coffee Cup

This one works well as a quieter, smaller lesson between the bigger street scenes. Sketch the table lightly, then the cup and saucer sitting on it, keeping the ellipse of the cup rim as even as you can manage.

Ink the cup handle, saucer rim and table edge, then let it dry before any wash touches the page. A pale cream wash across the whole table surface comes first, applied wet on wet so it pools softly without hard edges.

Once dry, add a soft terracotta wash to the cup’s outer rim and saucer edge, then drop a deep brown wash inside the cup itself for the coffee, leaving a thin ring of white paper near the rim for shine. If the brown bleeds past the ink line, your ink was not fully dry, which is the most common slip with small cups like this one.

Finish with a soft shadow under the cup and saucer in burnt umber, then a few curling white gel pen lines for steam and a dot of highlight on the rim. Keep that shadow soft and a touch blurred rather than sharp, since a hard shadow edge makes a round cup look flat instead of sitting on the table.

Striped Awning Over a Doorway

Sketch the awning shape first, a simple curved or scalloped band over the doorway, then the door itself beneath it. This is a nice small subject if you want to practice stripes without committing to a whole street scene.

Ink the scalloped edge, every stripe line, and the door frame, then wait for it to dry fully since stripes bleed very obviously if the ink is still wet. A thin cream wash goes over the wall and the pale stripes of the awning, left to settle wet on wet.

Once dry, paint only the coloured stripes in terracotta, working carefully along the ink lines so the pale stripes stay bare cream. A small plant or wreath beside the door takes a soft green wash, giving the eye somewhere to rest beside all those stripes.

Finish by painting the shadow the awning casts onto the wall and door in burnt umber, angled consistently in one direction, then a few white gel pen touches along the awning’s front edge for crispness. The one thing to watch here: keep every stripe shadow falling the same direction, since mixed shadow angles are what make a striped awning look unconvincing.

Bicycle Leaning on a Wall

Pencil the bicycle frame first, keeping the wheels as even circles, then lean it against a simple wall shape. Wheels are the trickiest part, so draw them lightly and adjust a few times before committing to ink.

Ink the frame, spokes, basket weave and a bit of wall texture, letting the spoke lines stay thin and a little uneven, which actually reads as more charming than perfectly ruled lines. Let it dry completely before the first wash.

A pale cream wash covers the wall behind the bike, then once dry, terracotta goes over the wall’s lower section and a few individual bricks, left a little patchy on purpose. Small flowers in the front basket get quick touches of green and soft pink, kept loose rather than detailed.

Finish with a shadow under both wheels and along the base of the wall in burnt umber, which anchors the bicycle so it does not float. A touch of white gel pen along a few spokes catches the light nicely, and the tip to remember is to leave the spokes mostly as thin ink lines rather than painting over them, since too much wash there muddies the whole wheel.

Window Box Full of Geraniums

Sketch the window frame and shutters first, then a simple rectangular box beneath it with loose round shapes for the flower heads. Keep the flower shapes small and varied in size so the box does not look like one solid red blob later.

Ink the shutters, window panes and flower stems, then let it dry fully, since this is a scene with a lot of small lines close together that will bleed badly if rushed. The first wash is a thin cream over the wall and window frame, left to settle wet on wet.

Once dry, bring terracotta to the shutters and the wooden box, then drop red and pink loosely onto the geranium heads while the paper is still a touch damp so the colours blend softly into each other. If the flowers come out too uniform, dab a slightly different mix into one or two heads before it dries, which adds welcome variety.

Finish with green on every stem and leaf, a soft shadow under the box and shutters in burnt umber, and a few white gel pen flicks on the window glass for shine. For more flower practice beyond this little box, the easy watercolor flower for beginners lessons pair nicely with this one.

Vintage Scooter by a Shopfront

Pencil the scooter’s rounded body first, then the two wheels and a simple shopfront shape behind it. The curves of a scooter take a little patience, so sketch lightly and keep adjusting before you commit to ink.

Ink the frame, mirrors, wheel rims and the shopfront’s window lines, then let it dry before any water touches the page. A pale cream wash covers the shopfront wall and glass behind the scooter, settling unevenly for an aged look.

Once dry, terracotta goes across the scooter’s rounded body panels in one confident wash, then a soft grey covers the seat and both wheels. If the terracotta pools too dark in one spot, lift a little colour out with a clean damp brush while it is still wet rather than letting it dry into a hard blotch.

Finish with a shadow cast beneath the scooter and faintly against the wall behind it in burnt umber, grounding the whole thing. White gel pen dabbed onto the mirrors and any chrome trim gives that little metallic spark, and the tip that helps most with scooters is to keep the body wash in one single pass, since reworking a curved panel too many times flattens its roundness.

Outdoor Chalkboard Menu

This is a satisfying small subject to practice between busier scenes. Sketch the easel’s simple tripod legs and the rectangular board sitting on top, keeping the proportions a little tall and narrow for that classic cafe look.

Ink the easel legs, the board’s edge and just a few loose lines where lettering might sit later, then let it dry completely. A thin cream wash goes over the ground and any wall behind the easel, left to settle wet on wet.

Once dry, the chalkboard panel itself takes a deep charcoal grey wash in one even pass, and the wooden legs take a warm terracotta once that grey is fully dry. If your grey comes out patchy and you wanted it flat, your brush was probably too dry, so reload it generously and work quickly edge to edge.

Finish with a soft shadow under the easel’s feet in burnt umber, then the fun part: white gel pen lettering scrawled across the board like real chalk, plus a few highlight flicks along the frame’s edges. Keep the lettering loose and a little uneven, since neat printed letters look less like chalk and more like a label.

Potted Herb Garden on Steps

Sketch a short run of stone steps first, then line up several simple pot shapes along them, varying the heights a little so the row feels relaxed rather than lined up on a ruler. Loose cloud shapes above each pot stand in for the herb leaves at this stage.

Ink the steps, every pot rim and the leaf clusters, then let it dry before reaching for water. A pale cream wash covers the stone steps first, settling unevenly wet on wet for a worn, sunlit feel.

Once that is dry, paint every pot in terracotta, mixing the wash a little differently for each one so they read as separate pots rather than one long shape. The herb leaves then take a deep green wash while the paper is still slightly damp, letting the colour spread a touch at the edges for a soft, leafy look.

Finish with a shadow under each pot and along the step edges in burnt umber, which does more than almost anything else to make the row sit convincingly on stone. A few white gel pen lines along the strongest leaves finish the texture, and the tip worth keeping here is to never paint two neighbouring pots the exact same terracotta mix, since that small variation is what sells a whole row of pots.

Cafe Chair and Round Table

Sketch a single bistro chair beside a small round table, keeping the chair’s curved wirework as loose loops rather than trying to copy every twist exactly. This pairs naturally with the corner cafe scene earlier if you want to build a fuller street corner across two sheets.

Ink the wirework, the legs and the table edge, then let it dry fully, since thin wire lines close together bleed fast if the ink is rushed. A pale cream wash covers the ground beneath both pieces, left to settle wet on wet.

Once dry, terracotta covers the chair seat and the table top in one pass, then a soft grey goes over the metal legs and backrest once that terracotta is dry. If the grey looks too flat and solid, thin it with a touch more water, since bistro metal usually reads better as a lighter, slightly uneven wash.

Finish with a shadow cast by both the chair and table onto the ground in burnt umber, angled the same direction for both pieces so they clearly share one light source. White gel pen along a few wire curves finishes the sparkle, and if you enjoyed this pairing of ink and loose colour, the easy watercolor landscapes for beginners are a gentle next step into bigger scenes.

What to Do Next

Pick whichever little corner is calling to you most today, print or sketch out the pencil lines, and let the ink and loose washes do the rest. Paint one slowly, see how the cream and terracotta settle on your particular paper, then carry what you learn straight into the next street scene.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to draw the pencil sketch perfectly before inking it?

No, the pencil only needs to place the main shapes roughly, since the ink pen is what defines the final lines. Keep pencil marks light so stray lines disappear under the ink and wash without showing through.

What pen works best for the ink lines in a watercolor and ink tutorial?

A fine waterproof liner, around 0.3 to 0.5mm, works best because it will not smear once the watercolor washes go on top. Always test a scrap line with a wet brush before starting the real sheet.

How wet should the first wash be over the background or wall?

The first wash should be thin and watery, almost like tinted water, so it settles unevenly and looks aged rather than flat. Build darker, stronger colour only in the later stages over dry layers.

Why does my ink smear when I add watercolor on top?

Ink smears when it has not fully dried or when the pen itself is not waterproof. Wait two to three minutes after inking before any wash, and switch pens if smearing still happens on a dry test line.

How do I keep small scenes like these from looking too busy?

Keep early washes pale and let the ink carry most of the detail, adding strong colour only to a few key spots like awnings or flowers. Leaving patches of bare cream paper also keeps the eye calm.
