28 Fairytale Illustration Ideas of Glass Slippers, Gingerbread Cottages and Enchanted Towers

22

A good fairytale illustration never needs the whole story written out underneath it. One object, one small figure, one patch of forest at dusk and the reader already knows which tale she has stepped into, because these pictures have lived in old storybooks for two centuries and the shapes are burned into memory. The 28 scenes below come straight from the original Grimm, Perrault and Andersen tales, not the versions with the familiar faces and the bright primary colors, so every page feels like it belongs on the inside cover of a worn, slightly foxed old book.

Work loose and let the watercolor pool and lift where it wants to, add the ink lines after the paint has mostly dried, and keep white paper showing through as part of the picture rather than something to fill in completely. Start with whichever scene you already love best, there is no order to follow and every one below stands alone.

Start the whole set with something small: a glass slipper left on palace steps, caught by moonlight after the dancing has ended. Pencil in a simple stone stair in soft perspective, then the slipper itself as two overlapping curved shapes, heel and toe, sitting slightly askew as though it fell mid-run.

Paint the steps first in a thin grey-violet wash so they stay quiet and recede, then leave the slipper as bare white paper with only the faintest wash of pale blue in its shadow side. Once dry, add ink hatching along the stair edges and a few fine lines to suggest the glass catching light, keeping the slipper itself almost untouched by ink.

The common mistake is overworking the slipper until it looks solid rather than glass. If that happens, lift paint with a damp brush and tissue while it is still wet, or simply leave more white next time.

Try this today: paint the steps and shadow first, then stop and look before you touch the slipper at all.

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Lavender Mist,Pale Rose,Moonlight White

Move from the ballroom steps into deep forest for a gingerbread cottage tucked among dark green trees. Block in the tree shapes first as loose, almost black-green silhouettes around the edges of the page, leaving a clear pale gap in the middle for the cottage to sit in.

Paint the cottage in warm honey and rose washes while the forest wash is still slightly damp at its inner edge, so the two blend softly where trees meet eave. Once everything is dry, use a fine ink line for the roof tiles, the candy decoration and the little path leading to the door, and a touch of white gouache or the paper itself for a dusting of icing sugar snow.

If your first time, keep the forest simpler than you think, three or four tree shapes read as a whole wood when the cottage glows in contrast. Swap a dip pen for a fine brush if you do not have waterproof ink.

One tip for today: paint the darkest green first so the warm cottage colors have something to glow against.

You Will Need

• white gouache or white gel pen for icing details

Palette: Sap Green,Burnt Sienna,Deep Rose,Honey Gold

Look at old engraved fairytale book plates for how illustrators simplified dense forest into two or three tones rather than individual leaves.

A tall tower with long golden hair falling from its single window needs a strong sense of scale, so measure the tower as roughly five times taller than it is wide before you sketch a single brick. Keep the window small and set high, and let the hair fall more than halfway down the page so its length does the storytelling.

Wash in the stone tower first in cool grey-green, then paint the hair in layered strokes of golden yellow and ochre while the brush stays fairly dry, pulling each stroke downward in one confident motion rather than scrubbing back and forth. Add ivy or small climbing plants at the tower base once the stone wash is dry, using a darker green dabbed with the brush tip.

The hair usually goes wrong by looking flat and rope-like. Vary your stroke pressure as you pull downward, heavier at the top near the window and lighter toward the ends, and let a few stray strands break away from the main fall.

Try it today: paint three tonal layers of yellow for the hair, pale, mid and a few dark ochre strands, rather than one flat color.

Palette: Ochre Gold,Lemon Yellow,Stone Grey,Ivy Green

Give the gingerbread wood a visitor now: a girl in a red hood walking a forest path, her cloak the one bright note against muted green and brown. Sketch her small and a little off-center, walking away from the viewer along a winding path so the forest reads as large and she reads as alone.

Paint the background trees loosely in sap green and umber first, keeping the palette quiet everywhere except the hood, which you can paint in a single confident wash of deep rose-red saturated enough to pop against the muted wood. Once dry, add ink line for tree trunks, a basket on her arm and a few fallen leaves on the path.

If the red looks too flat or cartoonish, deepen its shadow side with a touch of Payne’s grey mixed into the red while it is still damp, which gives the cloak some folds without extra linework. No red paint on hand, try a strong alizarin crimson instead, it leans just as deep.

One tip: paint every other color at half strength so the hood can be the only saturated color on the page.

Palette: Alizarin Crimson,Sap Green,Raw Umber,Payne’s Grey

For something with a bit of dry humor, paint a single pea sitting impossibly under a tall, leaning stack of mattresses. Draw the stack first in loose perspective, each mattress slightly wider or narrower than the one below so the tower leans and wobbles rather than sitting perfectly straight.

Work from the bottom mattress upward, giving each one a slightly different pastel wash, powder blue, blush pink, pale mint, so the stack reads as a cheerful pile rather than a uniform block. Paint the tiny pea at the very base in a dot of bright green, almost comically small against the scale above it, then add ink quilting lines and buttons once everything is dry.

The stack usually looks stiff if every mattress is the same width and perfectly aligned. Let the top two or three tilt visibly off the vertical axis, which does more to sell the precarious height than any shading will.

Quick version for ten minutes: four mattresses and the pea. The forty minute version adds a small ladder leaning against the stack and a cat watching from the floor.

Palette: Powder Blue,Blush Pink,Pale Mint,Pea Green

Return to a quieter scene with a frog sitting by the rim of an old stone well, a golden ball resting just beside him in the grass. Draw the well as a simple circle of stacked stones with a small peaked roof, then the frog low and close to the ground, legs tucked and eyes large.

Paint the stone well in cool grey-green first, then the frog in a wash of olive and moss green, leaving two small white highlights on his eyes before any other detail goes in. The golden ball gets a warm yellow wash with a touch of white left unpainted at its top for shine, and this is the one note of real warmth in an otherwise cool, mossy scene.

Eyes are where this goes wrong most often, too round and the frog looks cartoonish rather than storybook. Keep them slightly almond shaped and set wide on the head, and paint the pupil as a small dark dot rather than a full circle.

Today’s tip: paint the ball last so its gold has nothing competing with it on the page.

Palette: Moss Green,Olive,Stone Grey,Golden Yellow

Bring the story indoors for a pumpkin waiting by a fireplace, a pair of small mice curled nearby as though caught mid-transformation. Sketch the fireplace as a simple stone arch filling most of the page, the pumpkin squat and round in front of it, mice no bigger than your thumbnail at its base.

Paint the fire’s glow first in warm orange and soft rose washed into the stone arch, letting it bleed upward into grey shadow near the top of the chimney. Once dry, paint the pumpkin in deep orange with a darker ribbed shadow down each lobe, and the mice in quick grey washes with tiny ink whiskers added last.

If the firelight looks flat, drop a touch of clean water into the orange wash while it is still wet and let it bloom outward, which mimics the soft, uneven glow of real firelight far better than an even wash. No fireplace reference handy, picture a candle flame instead and scale the glow up.

Try the quick ten minute version with just the pumpkin and glow, then add the mice and hearth tools for the longer sitting.

Palette: Pumpkin Orange,Soft Rose,Warm Grey,Charcoal

For a scene with more atmosphere, paint a princess asleep among climbing roses inside a thorn-wrapped castle room. Sketch her lying across a narrow bed or chaise, simple in silhouette, then let thorny vines with a few open roses frame the whole scene like a wreath around her.

Paint the roses first in soft pink and deep rose washes scattered loosely around the edges of the page, keeping the center, where she lies, calmer and paler so the eye lands there. The thorny vines go in next as dark green-brown lines once the rose washes are dry, and her dress and the bedding stay in muted pastels so nothing competes with the roses framing her.

This scene turns muddy fast if every rose gets the same attention. Paint two or three roses with real detail, full washes and a few ink lines for petal edges, and let the rest stay as soft pink blobs in the background.

For next time, try the same composition at night with a deep indigo wash instead of daylight pastels, which gives the sleeping spell a very different mood.

Palette: Deep Rose,Soft Pink,Forest Green,Pale Lavender

Shift to the sea for a little mermaid sitting on a rock, looking out toward a distant shore rather than toward the viewer, which keeps the mood wistful rather than posed. Draw the rock low in the lower third of the page so the sky and sea can take up most of the space above and around her.

Paint the sky and sea first in soft blending washes of pale aqua and dusty blue, wet into wet so the horizon blurs gently, then once that layer is dry paint her tail in a stronger teal-green with ink scale lines added sparingly along its edge, not every scale drawn. Her hair can be a single warm wash of auburn or pale gold pulled in loose strokes down her back.

The shore in the distance is easy to overdo. Keep it as one or two soft, pale shapes near the horizon line, barely more than a suggestion, so the focus stays on her figure and not on architectural detail you cannot see clearly from this distance anyway.

One concrete tip: wet your paper before laying the sky and sea wash, it is the fastest way to get that soft horizon blur in one pass.

Palette: Dusty Blue,Pale Aqua,Teal Green,Auburn

Scale right down for a tiny girl asleep inside an open walnut shell, which asks you to think carefully about proportion before anything else: her whole curled body should fit comfortably within a shell no larger than a few centimeters across in the finished image. Sketch the walnut shell first as two rounded halves, one open and tipped slightly toward the viewer like a little boat or cradle.

Paint the shell’s interior in warm brown with darker ridged lines following its natural grain, then paint the girl tucked inside using the smallest brush in your set, keeping her in soft pastel colors so she reads as delicate rather than detailed. A single flower petal as a blanket, painted in one quick wash of pink, finishes the scene without adding more small shapes than the eye can comfortably read.

If she ends up looking stiff or too large for the shell, check her proportions against the shell width before adding any ink: her curled body should take up no more than two thirds of the shell’s open length, leaving visible space around her.

Try it today: paint the shell first and let it dry completely before you attempt her, so wet paint from the shell cannot bleed into her tiny pale form.

Palette: Walnut Brown,Petal Pink,Pale Peach,Soft White

Move to a farmyard for a goose that lays golden eggs, caught mid-strut among ordinary hay and fence rails so the gold egg beside her reads as the one strange, wonderful thing in an otherwise plain scene. Sketch the goose large and confident in the foreground, neck curved, one foot lifted, with a simple fence and a few loose hay strokes behind her.

Paint the farmyard setting first in muted straw yellow and warm grey-brown so it stays quiet, then paint the goose in clean white with a grey wash kept only in her shadow side and under her wing, leaving the lit side as bare paper. The golden egg beside her gets the richest, most saturated color on the page, a deep warm gold with a single white highlight left unpainted.

White birds often disappear into white paper if you are not careful. Make sure her shadow side has enough grey-blue in it, and keep a thin ink outline along her back and head so she stays readable even where the wash is lightest.

For today: paint the egg last, in one confident wash, so it stays the brightest, most saturated shape on the page.

Palette: Straw Yellow,Warm Grey-Brown,Soft White,Rich Gold

Here the composition itself carries the magic: a beanstalk climbing from a small cottage garden straight up and off the top of the page into cloud. Draw the stalk thick and twisting near its base, tapering and curling as it rises, with large leaves breaking the silhouette at irregular intervals rather than evenly spaced.

Paint the lower garden and cottage small and quiet near the bottom edge in muted greens and browns, then work your way up the stalk in increasingly lighter green washes so it seems to fade and dissolve as it nears the cloud layer at the top. Paint the clouds last in soft grey-white, wet into wet, letting a little green bleed up into the cloud base where the stalk disappears into it.

The eye level here does the storytelling: keep the cottage and garden at the very bottom of the page, as though you are standing in the garden looking straight up, which exaggerates the stalk’s impossible height far more than a side view would.

One more thing worth trying next time, paint the same composition from above looking down through the clouds at the tiny garden instead.

Palette: Fresh Green,Sap Green,Soft Grey,Warm Brown

After all that height, settle into a cosy interior: seven little beds lined up in a forest cottage room, each with its own small quilt and pillow. Sketch the room first in simple one point perspective, walls narrowing gently toward a back window, then line the beds along both walls, varying their size slightly so the row does not feel mechanically repeated.

Paint the wooden beams and floor in warm brown first, then give each quilt a different soft color, rust, sage, dusty blue, mustard, so the row reads as cheerful rather than uniform. A single candle or lantern glowing on a small table between the beds becomes the warmest, brightest note in the room, painted last in deep gold.

Seven of anything risks looking cluttered fast. Keep the beds simple rectangular shapes with minimal ink detail, saving your detailed linework for the candle, a few boots lined up on the floor, and one or two small personal touches.

If a full room feels like too much today, try the quick version: three beds and the candle, which still reads clearly as the scene.

Palette: Warm Brown,Sage Green,Dusty Blue,Candle Gold

Climb back up into a tower for a spinning wheel standing alone in a round stone room, caught in a shaft of light from a single high window. Draw the wheel as the clear center of the composition, its spokes radiating outward, and set the light source high and to one side so the whole room reads in shadow except for one bright diagonal beam crossing the floor.

Paint the stone walls and floor in cool shadow tones first, grey-blue and muted violet, then paint the light beam itself by leaving a clean diagonal strip of white paper untouched by the wall wash, which does more work than any yellow paint could. The spinning wheel goes in last, warm wood brown catching the light on one side and falling into cool shadow on the other.

This only works if the light direction stays consistent across every shadow in the room, the wheel’s shadow, the wall shadows and the window frame shadow should all point the same way, away from that single high window.

Concrete tip for today: mask the light beam shape with low tack tape before washing in the stone walls, then peel it away for a perfectly clean strip of light.

You Will Need

• low tack masking tape for the light beam, optional

Palette: Grey-Blue,Muted Violet,Warm Wood,Soft White

For a scene with real motion, paint a golden goose with a comic line of people stuck fast to her feathers and to each other, trailing behind her across a village square. Sketch the goose mid-waddle near one side of the page, then the line of figures behind her growing smaller with distance, each one leaning back with arms stuck forward, a visual joke told through posture alone.

Paint the goose first in rich warm gold, the brightest shape in the scene, then the line of people in increasingly muted, smaller washes as they recede, which both tells the story and handles perspective in one move. Keep faces simple, a dot and a line is often funnier than a fully rendered expression here.

If the line of figures starts to look like a single blob, vary the spacing and the tilt of each body, some leaning hard back, some stumbling sideways, so the eye can separate one stuck villager from the next even at a glance.

Try the ten minute version with just the goose and three figures, and add the full comic line of five or six for the longer sitting.

Palette: Rich Gold,Muted Rose,Soft Brown,Pale Grey

Return to the water for a swan maiden standing at the edge of a still lake, a cast-off swan feather cloak lying on the grass beside her. Sketch her tall and simple near the shoreline, the lake taking up most of the lower half of the page as a calm mirror for sky and reeds.

Paint the lake first with a wash of pale grey-blue, then while it is still slightly damp, drag a dry brush loaded with a touch more pigment horizontally across it to suggest the faintest reflection of her and the reeds, without painting a full mirrored copy underneath. Her dress and the feathered cloak on the grass get soft white and pale grey washes, with a few ink lines for individual feathers kept only along the cloak’s edge.

Reflections are the trickiest part here. Resist painting a detailed mirror image, a few horizontal dry brush strokes in roughly the right tones read as water far better than an exact upside down copy of the figure.

One tip worth trying today: turn your paper upside down after sketching her, to check the reflection’s rough shape and placement before you commit any paint.

Palette: Pale Grey-Blue,Soft White,Reed Green,Pale Grey

Bring in real cold for the snow queen’s sleigh crossing a wide frozen lake under a pale winter sky. Sketch the sleigh small against a large, mostly empty expanse of ice and sky, which is the whole point of this composition: scale the sleigh at no more than a tenth of the page width so the vast cold landscape does the talking.

Paint the sky and ice first in one continuous wet into wet wash of pale blue-white, barely distinguishing where ice ends and sky begins except for a faint horizon line left slightly warmer in tone. Once dry, paint the sleigh itself in cool silver-blue with a single note of deep indigo for the queen’s cloak, the only saturated color in an otherwise pale, icy scene.

If the ice looks too flat and empty rather than atmospheric, add a few thin streaks of dry brushed white gouache across it once everything else is dry, suggesting wind-blown snow skimming the surface.

Today’s tip: mix a tiny touch of warm ochre into your sky wash near the horizon, it keeps a cold palette from reading as simply grey and lifeless.

You Will Need

• white gouache for wind-blown snow streaks, optional

Palette: Pale Blue-White,Silver Blue,Deep Indigo,Warm Ochre

Move indoors to a quiet, intimate scene: a small nightingale perched on a windowsill, singing while an emperor listens from his bed nearby. Sketch the bird first, small and central on the sill, then the emperor’s bed further back and slightly in shadow, so the composition leads the eye from tiny singer to grand but weakened listener.

Paint the bird in warm soft brown with the lightest wash on its throat where the song comes from, then paint the emperor’s bedchamber in deep rose and muted gold, rich fabric tones that speak to his status but kept dim compared to the clear, lit window where the bird sits. A faint wash of pale moonlight blue outside the window ties bird and room together.

The bird can disappear against a cluttered background if the room gets too detailed. Keep the emperor’s bedding and hangings as broad, simple washes of color and save your ink detail for the bird alone, a few fine lines for feathers and feet.

Try it today: paint the bird last of all, once the room is fully dry, so its pale throat wash stays perfectly clean against the darker room behind it.

Palette: Warm Brown,Deep Rose,Muted Gold,Moonlight Blue

For one of the quieter, sadder tales, paint a small girl standing in a snowy street at dusk, a bundle of matches in her hand and a single match lit, its tiny flame the only warm color in the whole scene. Sketch her small against tall, simple building silhouettes, snow falling around her in loose dots and dashes.

Paint the street and buildings first in cool blue-grey dusk tones, wet into wet so the snowfall can be suggested by lifting small dots of color out with a dry brush or the tip of a tissue while the wash is still damp. Her coat and the match flame are the only warm notes, a small dab of orange-gold for the flame and a muted rust for her coat, painted last once the cool background is dry.

If the scene feels flat rather than cold and dim, deepen the blue-grey in the upper corners of the page and keep the area right around her slightly lighter, as though she stands in one last pool of fading light.

One tip for today: paint the match flame as the very last mark on the page, a single small confident dot of warm color against all that cool blue.

Palette: Cool Blue-Grey,Muted Rust,Match Flame Orange,Soft White

Launch a tiny tin soldier standing stiff and upright in a small paper boat, adrift on what might be a gutter stream or a wide dark river, scale left deliberately ambiguous. Sketch the boat first as a few simple folded paper triangles, then the soldier standing rigid inside it, one leg painted shorter than the other as a small nod to his story.

Paint the water around the boat first in deep moving strokes of blue-grey and green, using a fairly dry brush dragged in curving directions to suggest current without drawing every ripple as a hard line. The paper boat stays pale cream or white, and the soldier gets a confident red and black wash, the one solid, saturated shape riding on all that loose moving water.

Water this loose can swallow a small subject fast. Keep the boat and soldier painted with cleaner edges and slightly more saturated color than the water around them, so they read clearly as the one solid thing afloat in all that movement.

Quick version in ten minutes: boat, soldier and a few curved water strokes. The forty minute version adds a distant bridge or drainpipe mouth the current is heading toward.

Palette: Deep Blue-Grey,River Green,Soldier Red,Cream Paper

For a strange, lively image, paint a pair of red shoes dancing on their own, caught mid-motion with no feet inside them, on an otherwise empty stretch of floor or path. Sketch the shoes at an energetic angle, one lifted, one on its toe point, with a few quick motion lines curving around them to suggest they will not stop.

Paint the shoes in one bold, saturated wash of deep red, the single color doing all the work on an otherwise near-empty page, then once dry, add the motion lines in a lighter ink or a thin wash of pale grey so they feel like a trace of movement rather than a solid mark. A faint shadow beneath the shoes, painted in cool grey-violet, keeps them grounded even without feet to anchor them.

If the dancing feeling is not reading, check that the shoes are not sitting flat and symmetrical. Tilt them at different angles to each other, overlap their motion lines unevenly, and keep the page mostly empty around them so the energy has room to read.

Try next time painting the same shoes mid-leap instead of mid-spin, which changes the whole mood of the motion lines.

Palette: Deep Red,Pale Grey,Grey-Violet,Soft White

Bring back the forest story for its darker turn: a wolf tucked into a grandmother’s bed, a lace cap on his head and a quilt pulled up, eyes a little too sharp to be reassuring. Sketch the bed first as a simple frame filling most of the page, the wolf’s head and shoulders propped against the pillow, ears poking comically through the lace cap.

Paint the bedding in soft, homely pastels, dusty rose and cream, so the setting itself feels cosy and safe, which makes the wolf underneath all the more unsettling by contrast. Paint the wolf’s fur in warm grey-brown with darker shadow strokes around the eyes and snout, and save a bright, slightly too-wide wash of yellow-gold for the eyes themselves, the one unsettling note of color in an otherwise soft palette.

This scene lives or dies on the eyes. Keep the rest of the face relatively soft and even slightly sympathetic looking, so the sharp, knowing eyes do all the work of unsettling the viewer rather than an overly fanged, cartoonish snarl.

One tip for today: paint the lace cap last in a few quick white gel pen or masking fluid dots, kept loose and irregular rather than a perfect lace pattern.

You Will Need

• white gel pen or masking fluid for lace cap pattern

Palette: Dusty Rose,Cream,Warm Grey-Brown,Yellow-Gold Eyes

For the most ambitious scene on this list, paint twelve princesses dancing in an underground ballroom lit by silver and gold trees, which asks for a loose, almost impressionistic crowd rather than twelve fully rendered figures. Sketch only three or four dancers with real detail near the front, then suggest the rest of the crowd behind them as simpler, smaller silhouettes fading into the dimmer background.

Paint the ballroom itself first in deep jewel tones, rich plum and midnight blue, with the suggestion of glittering silver and gold trees at the edges done in quick dry brush strokes rather than painted leaf by leaf. The foreground dancers get full, confident washes of varied pastel gown colors, while the background crowd stays muted and loose, barely more than color and gesture.

Twelve full figures at this level usually collapses into a muddy crowd. Let the detail fall off sharply after the front few dancers, which actually reads as a larger, grander ballroom than if every figure fought for equal attention.

For next time, try the same ballroom from directly above, looking down at the dance floor pattern instead of across it at face height.

Palette: Deep Plum,Midnight Blue,Silver Grey,Soft Gold

Settle back down to a single quiet object: a magic mirror hanging on a castle wall, its frame ornate and its glass holding the faintest suggestion of a face rather than a clear reflection. Sketch the frame first as a tall oval or arched shape with simple scrollwork, then the wall around it in plain stone.

Paint the stone wall in muted grey first, then the mirror frame in rich gold with a darker wash settled into the scrollwork grooves once the first layer dries, giving it some dimension without heavy shading. The glass itself stays almost entirely pale silvery grey, with only the faintest ghostly wash of a face suggested in the center, soft enough that it could be a reflection or could be something else entirely.

The face inside is the hardest part to get right. Keep it extremely loose, two or three soft, barely-there strokes rather than actual features, since a clearly painted face breaks the mystery this image depends on.

Try it today: paint the ghostly face suggestion first in the lightest possible wash, then build the stronger frame and wall colors around it so you never risk overpowering that faint central mark.

Palette: Muted Stone Grey,Rich Gold,Silvery Grey,Ghost Pale Blue

For a scene built almost entirely on negative space, paint a breadcrumb trail winding through a dark forest floor, the crumbs themselves tiny pale dots scattered along a path that the viewer’s eye follows rather than any single large shape. Sketch the forest floor first with a loose winding path implied simply by where you leave the paper lighter.

Paint the forest floor and surrounding trees in deep, loose washes of brown and green, working from the outer edges of the page inward, and leave a narrow meandering strip of paper paler and less saturated to read as the path itself. Once dry, dot in the breadcrumbs with a small brush loaded with warm ochre, spacing them unevenly along the path, closer together near the viewer and sparser as the trail recedes.

Too many evenly spaced crumbs reads as a pattern rather than a trail. Cluster a few together, skip a gap, place one slightly off the path’s center, that irregularity is what makes it believable as crumbs rather than a line of dots.

One tip for today: paint the dark forest first and let it dry completely, so the pale path and crumbs stay crisp against it rather than bleeding into soft green edges.

Palette: Deep Forest Brown,Sap Green,Warm Ochre,Pale Path Beige

For a scene full of charm, stack a donkey, dog, cat and rooster on top of each other peering in through a cottage window, largest at the bottom and smallest at the top in a wobbly, improbable tower. Sketch the donkey first, sturdy and grounded, then the dog standing on his back, the cat on the dog’s shoulders, and the rooster perched right at the top, each animal a bit smaller and less stable looking than the one beneath it.

Paint each animal in its own simple, flat color, grey for the donkey, warm brown for the dog, soft orange-grey for the cat, deep rust and black for the rooster, keeping the palette cheerful rather than naturalistic. The cottage window behind them stays in cool shadow so the animal tower reads as the clear, lit focus of the page.

This only reads as a joke if the stack looks genuinely precarious. Tilt each animal slightly off the one below rather than stacking them in a perfectly straight vertical line, and let a tail or paw dangle off to one side for extra wobble.

Quick version for ten minutes: just the donkey and dog. The forty minute version adds the full stack through to the rooster at top.

Palette: Donkey Grey,Warm Brown,Soft Orange-Grey,Rooster Rust

Return to the pond for the moment the frog’s story turns, a princess leaning down to kiss him as he sits on a lily pad at the water’s edge. Sketch her kneeling at the pond edge first, leaning forward, then the frog small on his lily pad just within reach, the two shapes brought close together so the kiss reads clearly even from a distance.

Paint the pond water in soft greens and blues first, with the lily pad as a simple rounded shape painted slightly darker green with a few ink vein lines once dry. Her dress gets a generous pastel wash, pale blue or soft yellow, and the frog stays in his usual olive and moss greens, small enough that the scale difference between them tells half the story on its own.

If the moment feels stiff, check the distance between her face and his, too much gap and the kiss reads as a gesture rather than a connection. Bring them close enough that her hood or hair might even brush the edge of his lily pad.

One concrete tip: paint her dress last and biggest, its generous pastel wash gives the eye somewhere calm to land after following the story to that small central moment.

Palette: Pastel Blue,Lily Pad Green,Olive Green,Soft Yellow

Close the set with the most ambitious landscape here: a castle perched at the very top of a glass mountain, its slopes so smooth and reflective that nothing can climb them. Sketch the mountain first as a tall, simple triangular peak taking up most of the page height, the castle small and pale at its summit, catching the last of the light.

Paint the mountain in cool blue-grey and white, leaving long vertical streaks of bare paper unpainted down its slopes to suggest the glassy, reflective surface catching sky color. The castle at the top gets the warmest color on the page, a small wash of soft gold and rose against the cold mountain, and the sky behind can shift from pale blue near the peak to deeper blue lower down for extra scale.

The glass effect depends entirely on those unpainted streaks staying clean and vertical. Plan them before you start painting the mountain wash, perhaps with a light pencil line, so you do not accidentally paint over the bare paper you meant to leave for shine.

For today: paint the sky first, then the mountain working around your planned white streaks, and save the warm little castle for your very last brushstrokes.

Palette: Cool Blue-Grey,Deep Sky Blue,Soft Gold,Pale Rose

What to Do Next

Pick whichever scene pulled at you first while scrolling, gather cold press paper, your watercolors and one fine waterproof pen, and give yourself one sitting to finish it loosely rather than perfectly. Once you see how quickly a single glass slipper or a gingerbread cottage comes together, the rest of this list is just deciding which old tale to visit next.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best paper for fairytale illustration in watercolor?

Cold press watercolor paper around 140lb works best. It holds enough water for loose wet-into-wet washes while still taking fine ink line work cleanly once the paint has dried completely.

Should the ink lines go in before or after the watercolor?

Add ink after the paint dries, not before. Painting around dry ink keeps edges crisp, and drawing fine detail over dry watercolor avoids the ink bleeding or smearing into wet pigment.

How do I keep these fairytale scenes looking like old storybooks rather than cartoons?

Keep colors soft and slightly muted rather than bright and flat, leave plenty of white paper showing, and add ink detail sparingly rather than outlining every shape fully.

What if I do not have the exact watercolor colors listed for an idea?

Mix close equivalents from a basic set. A warm yellow and a touch of red makes most golds, and any blue-grey and violet combination covers most of the cool shadow tones used here.

Can these fairytale illustration ideas work in gouache instead of watercolor?

Yes, gouache suits them well since its opacity makes pale details like glass slippers or snow easier to paint last, over darker backgrounds, rather than having to leave bare paper from the start.
