29 Owl Painting Ideas and Other Cozy Woodland Birds

34

Owl painting has a particular kind of charm: round faces, big dark eyes and feathers that feel soft under the brush before the paint even dries. Every piece below sits on a light background with a pastel dusk or daylight sky, so you get that cozy storybook glow without ever reaching for black paint. The owls lead the way, then a parade of small woodland birds joins in, each one caught in its own little forest moment.

Work through the list in order if you like, since it moves from simple shapes toward busier scenes, or just scroll until one bird calls to you. Keep your canvas or board small enough to finish today, mix your warm browns and mossy greens ahead of time, and let the feathery brushwork do the storytelling.

Start the whole list with a barn owl on a fence post, since its heart-shaped face is the easiest owl shape to get right first try. Block in the pastel dusk sky first with a flat brush, blending peach into soft lavender, then let it dry completely before you add the post or the bird on top.

Paint the owl as two simple shapes, a rounded body and a flat heart face, in cream and warm beige, then drybrush small strokes of soft grey around the face edge for that fluffy outline. Add the fence post in grey-brown underneath with a few knots and cracks using a thin brush.

The eyes are where beginners rush and lose the gentle look. Keep them small, dark and slightly almond-shaped rather than huge circles, and leave a tiny white dot of reflected sky in each one.

If you only have one sky color on hand, warm it with a touch of white rather than mixing in a second hue, since one soft gradient reads better than two competing colors.

Move from the fence post into a quiet birch forest for a snowy owl, which gives you a chance to practice painting against a repeated pattern. Paint the pale sky first in soft blue-grey, then add three or four birch trunks going straight up with a thin flat brush, leaving the white of the canvas or a cream base showing through for the bark.

The owl itself stays almost pure white with just a hint of pale grey shadow under the wings and around the face disc, so mix a warm white rather than using it straight from the tube.

Eye level matters here: sit the owl low on a branch at the viewer’s own eye height rather than looking up or down at it, which keeps the whole scene feeling calm and close rather than dramatic.

Finish the birch bark marks last with a small dark brush or a fine liner, dotting and dashing rather than drawing solid lines, and dab a little moss green at the base of the trunks to ground the scene.

Palette: Titanium White,Pale Grey,Soft Blue Grey,Moss Green

Try snow texture with a dry stiff brush and almost no paint, dragged lightly over the lower canvas, to suggest drifts without painting every crystal.

After two owls shown in full, try a little owl peeking from a tree hollow, which only needs the head and shoulders. Paint the tree trunk first, filling most of the canvas with warm brown bark, then cut a dark oval hollow into it with a rounded edge.

Sit the owl’s head and top of its body inside that hollow, mottled brown and cream with sharp yellow eyes, so only a little of the trunk shows around it.

Beginners often make the hollow too neat and round, which looks painted on rather than natural. Rough up the edges with irregular dabs of dark brown and a few lighter cracks radiating outward before the owl goes in.

For a ten-minute version, keep the bark flat and the hollow simple. For forty minutes, add moss patches, a few ivy leaves trailing down one side and bark texture built up in three tanked layers of brown.

Three owlets in a row on a branch gives you practice repeating a shape with small variations, which is a useful skill for any painting. Sketch one simple rounded owlet body lightly in pencil, then repeat it twice along a horizontal branch, varying the head tilt on each so they do not look stamped from the same template.

Paint the branch first in warm grey-brown across the lower third of the canvas, then block in the three fluffy bodies in soft grey and white, keeping the shapes rounded and a little lopsided since baby owls are never perfectly symmetrical.

Compare each owlet’s size to the branch width as you go rather than to each other, since that keeps all three sitting convincingly on the same perch instead of floating at different scales.

Finish with a dry brush loaded with white for the downy chest feathers, flicking upward in short strokes, and add a pale sky wash behind them last so it does not muddy the white feathers while still wet.

Palette: Soft Grey,Titanium White,Warm Grey Brown,Pale Sky Blue

Give an owl a little errand next with one delivering a letter, a favorite cottagecore scene that still only needs one bird and one small prop. Paint the owl mid-flight or perched with wings slightly raised, warm brown and cream feathers, then add a small cream envelope held in one talon or tucked under a wing.

Work the bird first from head to tail, then paint the envelope last on top so its edges stay crisp against the finished feathers rather than getting lost underneath.

The envelope is the easy part to get wrong if it looks flat. Shade one edge slightly darker and leave the opposite edge almost white to suggest it catching the light, and add a tiny red wax seal dot with the tip of a small brush.

If red feels too bold against your palette, swap the seal for a sprig of dried lavender tied with string instead, which keeps the whole piece softer and still tells the story.

Palette: Warm Brown,Cream,Brick Red,Soft Lavender

Keep the cottagecore mood going with an owl in a knitted scarf perched on a mailbox, a scene that lets you practice painting a simple pattern on fabric. Block in the owl’s body first in warm brown and cream, then wrap a scarf shape around its neck in a contrasting color like dusty rose or moss green.

Paint the mailbox underneath as a simple rounded rectangle in faded red or sage, adding a small flag and a dent or two of shading so it does not look brand new.

The scarf stripes are where the texture lives. Once the base scarf color is dry, drag a small flat brush loaded with a second color in short horizontal strokes, leaving gaps so the base shows through like knit ridges.

No flat brush on hand works fine too, since even the edge of a round brush dragged sideways will leave a similar ridged stripe.

Palette: Warm Brown,Dusty Rose,Sage Green,Faded Red

Switch the setting from branch to ground with a burrowing owl standing outside its burrow, a bird with longer legs and a more upright stance than the others so far. Paint the sandy ground and a dark burrow opening first, keeping the hole lower in the frame so the owl has room to stand tall above it.

Build the owl’s body in warm tan and white with those distinctive long legs visible beneath, standing fairly straight rather than hunched, which is what makes this species recognizable even in a simple painting.

Light source matters a lot here: decide whether the daylight comes from the left or right before you start shading the legs and the burrow mound, then keep every shadow consistent with that one direction.

Finish with a few dry grass tufts around the burrow entrance using a fine brush flicked upward, and a scattering of small pebbles dotted along the sandy mound.

Palette: Warm Tan,Titanium White,Sandy Beige,Dark Umber

Give the owls their big action moment with one taking off, wings spread fully across the canvas. Start with the body as a compact oval in the center, then build each wing out from the shoulder in a sweeping curve, keeping the feather tips fanned rather than straight across.

Layer the wing feathers from the body outward in overlapping rows of warm brown and cream, each row slightly covering the base of the one before it, since that layering is what makes feathers look soft instead of scaly.

Beginners often paint wings too flat and symmetrical. Let one wing sit a touch higher than the other and vary the feather lengths slightly along each row to keep the motion believable.

For a quicker version, simplify to three feather rows per wing and block color without much blending. With more time, glaze a thin wash of warm grey into the wing shadows once the base layers are fully dry.

Palette: Warm Brown,Cream,Soft Grey,Pastel Peach

Bring in a season change with a tawny owl settled among autumn leaves, where the bird’s rich rust coloring can really sing against warm oranges and golds. Paint the owl’s body first in layered rust, russet and cream, keeping the face disc pale so it stands out from the busier plumage around it.

Once the owl is dry, add a scattering of maple and oak leaves around and slightly over the lower edges of its body, painted in a mix of gold, orange and deep red with simple leaf shapes, no need for fine detail on each one.

Compare the size of a single leaf to the owl’s eye as you paint, which keeps the leaves from accidentally growing too large and overwhelming the bird.

If autumn colors feel limited in your current set, mix your own rust from burnt sienna and a touch of red, which saves buying a separate tube.

Palette: Rust,Russet,Golden Yellow,Deep Red

Carry the cottagecore thread into an owl family tucked into a birdhouse, which means painting an adult and one or two smaller owls sharing the same small window. Paint the birdhouse structure first, a simple rounded roof and round entrance hole, in soft weathered wood tones with a dusting of moss on the roofline.

Fit the adult owl’s head and shoulders into the opening first, larger and more detailed, then tuck a smaller owlet head just beside or slightly behind it, overlapping the edge of the hole so the two feel nested together rather than floating side by side.

Keep the birdhouse roof measuring roughly twice the width of the entrance hole, which is the proportion that reads as a believable birdhouse rather than an oversized doorway.

A dab of white gel pen once everything is dry adds tiny highlight dots in each eye and a few light specks along the roof edge for frost or worn paint.

You Will Need

• white gel pen

Palette: Weathered Wood Brown,Moss Green,Cream,Soft Grey

Let one owl sit somewhere a little whimsical with a crescent moon swing, which pairs a daytime pastel sky with a storybook touch of fantasy. Paint the sky wash first in soft peach and lavender, then add the crescent moon shape in pale cream, angled so its two points curve gently upward like a swing.

Sit the owl’s rounded body right in the dip of the crescent, feet tucked under as though perched there naturally, and keep the moon large enough that the owl looks settled rather than balanced precariously.

Hang two thin rope or ribbon lines from the upper points of the moon up toward the top of the canvas for a swing effect, painted last in a single confident stroke each so they stay straight and even.

If straight lines feel tricky freehand, lay a ruler lightly against the wet canvas edge as a guide, or use low-tack tape to mask the line before painting over it.

You Will Need

• low-tack masking tape (optional)

Palette: Pastel Peach,Soft Lavender,Pale Cream,Warm Brown

Move the setting into a storybook village corner with an owl perched on a vintage street lamp, a nice chance to practice painting a man-made object alongside a bird. Paint the lamp post first as a simple tapered column in aged black or deep green, topped with a small lantern shape with a few panel lines.

Build the owl on top of the lantern roof, large enough that it clearly dominates the small structure beneath it, feet gripping the curved top edge.

Work the lamp from base to top before adding the owl, since the bird’s feet need to sit convincingly over the finished lamp shape rather than under a half-painted one.

A soft daylight sky with a hint of pink behind the lamp keeps the whole scene gentle rather than gothic, so avoid the temptation to paint this one at dusk or with any lit glow inside the lantern.

Palette: Aged Black Green,Warm Brown,Cream,Soft Pink

Soften the mood with a pair of owls cuddling, two bodies pressed close together so they almost read as one shape from a distance. Sketch two overlapping ovals first, one slightly smaller than the other, then paint them as a single connected silhouette in warm brown and cream before separating the individual feather details.

Give each owl its own head turned slightly toward the other or both facing forward together, and keep one set of eyes a touch softer or half closed to suggest the quieter, sleepier one of the pair.

Compare the width of the pair together against a single branch or perch beneath them, since two owls need a proportionally wider perch than one, and a too-narrow branch is the most common mistake here.

Finish with a little fluffing where their shoulders meet, using a dry brush to blend the feather edges of one bird gently into the other so the join feels soft rather than like two cut-out shapes glued side by side.

Palette: Warm Brown,Cream,Soft Grey,Pastel Peach

Dress one owl up with a flower crown next, a lighter, more decorative piece after the quiet cuddling scene. Paint the owl’s head and body first in your usual warm palette, then build a ring of small flowers across the top of its head once the feathers are fully dry.

Keep the flowers simple: a scatter of five-petal daisies in white and soft pink, a few rounded buds in lavender, and small green leaves tucked between them, each flower no bigger than the owl’s eye.

Vary the flower types and colors if you paint this one again later, swapping daisies for tiny roses or forget-me-nots, which keeps a repeated subject feeling fresh rather than copied.

Painting the crown last, after the feathers are completely dry, keeps the flower edges crisp instead of dragging brown feather paint into the petals.

Palette: Warm Brown,Soft Pink,Titanium White,Soft Lavender,Moss Green

Try painting this one as a round canvas if you have one, since the circular format suits a crown composition especially well.

Close the owl section with something full of movement, an owlet tumbling out of its nest mid-fall, wings flung out and feet kicking. Sketch the body at a diagonal angle rather than upright, which is the single change that makes this read as falling instead of simply perched sideways.

Paint the fluffy grey-brown body first, keeping the proportions round and top-heavy like a real owlet, then add the nest of twigs just above and behind it, a few loose twigs trailing down to suggest the moment of the fall.

The quick ten-minute version keeps the twigs simple and the owlet a single soft shape. The forty-minute version adds a scatter of loose down feathers drifting below the owlet and a second parent owl watching from a nearby branch.

Keep the background sky pale and uncluttered behind this one so all the motion stays with the bird and nothing competes with it.

Palette: Grey Brown,Cream,Titanium White,Soft Sky Blue

Leave the owls behind now and bring in a woodpecker gripping a mossy trunk, a bird whose bold red and black markings give a nice jolt of color after so many soft browns. Paint the trunk first, filling most of the canvas vertically, with patches of moss painted as soft clustered dabs of green rather than flat blocks.

Build the woodpecker’s body in black and white with a vivid red patch on the head, positioned sideways against the trunk with its tail braced underneath for support, which is how these birds actually cling to bark.

Getting the tail angle right is what sells this pose. Press the tail down and slightly out from the trunk rather than tucking it flat against the bark, since that brace is what makes the bird look like it is really gripping on rather than just stuck to the surface.

If a vivid red feels too bold for your palette, mute it slightly with a touch of burnt sienna mixed in, which still reads as red but sits more gently against the moss.

Palette: Black,Titanium White,Vivid Red,Moss Green

Bring in a jay holding an acorn next, a bird whose blue wing patches make for one of the prettiest color moments in this whole list. Paint the body first in soft pinkish-brown with the wing painted separately in bands of blue, black and white stripes, kept small and neat near the folded wing edge.

Perch the jay on a simple branch and tuck a single acorn in its beak, painted as a small oval with a textured cap on top, since that prop is what tells the whole little story of the bird gathering food for winter.

Compare the acorn’s size against the jay’s beak as you paint it, keeping it noticeably smaller than the head, which is the detail that keeps the proportions believable rather than cartoonish.

Finish the blue wing stripes last with a fine brush once the base wing color is dry, since thin crisp stripes painted over wet paint will blur into the background color instead of staying sharp.

Palette: Pinkish Brown,Cobalt Blue,Black,Titanium White

Scale right down with a wren balanced on a curling fern frond, a tiny bird that suits a tiny, delicate composition. Paint the fern first, a single arching stem with paired leaflets fanning out on either side, using a fine brush loaded with moss and sage green in long confident strokes from base to tip.

Add the wren perched partway along the stem, a small rounded brown body with its short tail cocked up at a sharp angle, which is the defining feature of this bird and worth exaggerating a little for character.

Painting a plant this delicate goes wrong fast if the fern stem wobbles or the leaflets get too heavy. Keep your brush fully loaded but your hand light, and paint each leaflet in one single stroke rather than going back over it.

If your fine brush is new or splayed, a cheap round brush trimmed to a tidy point with scissors works almost as well for these thin fern lines.

Palette: Moss Green,Sage Green,Warm Brown,Cream

Try a nuthatch next, the one bird on this list painted hanging upside down on a tree trunk, which is exactly how it is usually seen in real life. Paint the trunk vertically first, then place the bird with its head pointing down toward the base of the canvas and its feet gripping higher up, the reverse of every other perched bird so far.

Build the body in soft blue-grey on top with a warm peachy belly underneath, and keep the black eye stripe running straight through the eye, which is the single mark that makes a nuthatch instantly recognizable.

Painting a bird upside down can confuse your sense of light and shadow, so decide where the daylight falls before you begin and keep the shadow side of the body consistent even though the whole pose is flipped from what feels natural.

A light wash of warm sienna glazed thinly over the bark once dry adds depth without reworking the trunk from scratch.

Palette: Blue Grey,Peachy Tan,Black,Burnt Sienna

Bring a crossbill in next, a bird whose crossed beak tip is worth taking slowly since it is the detail that makes the whole painting make sense. Paint the body first in warm red-orange for the male or soft olive for a female version, then add the beak last in two thin curved strokes that cross slightly at the tip rather than meeting flush.

Give the bird a pine cone to grip or peck at, painted as a simple elongated oval with overlapping scale marks built up from a few curved strokes rather than dozens of tiny lines.

The quick version keeps the pine cone as a flat textured shape and the bird a single block of color with minimal shading. The longer version layers two or three tones into both the feathers and the cone scales for a rounder, more dimensional finish.

Steady your hand on the edge of the canvas or a mahl stick substitute like a ruler when painting that crossed beak tip, since a shaky line there is the one mistake that reads immediately.

Palette: Red Orange,Olive Green,Warm Brown,Cream

Let a waxwing bring in a splash of red and yellow next, perched with a cluster of bright berries nearby. Paint the sleek crested head and body first in soft fawn and grey, then add the small waxy red tips along the wing and a bright yellow band at the tail end, both painted as tiny precise dashes rather than large blocks.

Group three or four round berries beside the beak in deep red, each with a small white highlight dot, since that handful of berries is what gives the whole piece its reason for being.

If the red wing tips end up looking smudged, let the wing dry fully first, then dot the red marks on last with the very tip of a small round brush loaded with thick paint, touched once and lifted rather than dragged.

No deep red on hand works fine with a mix of crimson and a touch of brown, which gives a similar rich, slightly muted berry tone.

Palette: Fawn,Soft Grey,Deep Red,Golden Yellow

Bring a little winter color back with a bullfinch in the snow, its rose-pink breast glowing warmly against a pale, cold background. Paint the snowy ground and a few bare twigs first in soft white and grey-blue, then build the bullfinch on a twig with its black cap, grey back and that signature rosy chest.

Keep the pink breast painted in two tones, a soft base color then a slightly deeper rose blended only at the lower edge, which gives it gentle roundness without heavy shading.

The eye level on this one sits low and close, almost at the bird’s own height, which keeps the focus intimate rather than looking down on a small bird from above the way a landscape view would.

A few soft white dots flicked on last with a stiff dry brush suggest falling snow without needing real snow texture or extra materials.

Palette: Rose Pink,Black,Soft Grey,Titanium White

Pair a goldfinch with a teasel head next, a classic combination since these birds are often seen feeding on the spiky seed heads in real meadows. Paint the teasel first, a tall oval seed head covered in small radiating spikes, using a fine brush to flick outward lines from a central brown oval.

Build the goldfinch gripping the side of the teasel, its red face patch and bold black and yellow wing stripes painted as clean, confident blocks of color rather than blended gradients, since this bird’s markings are naturally crisp and graphic.

Compare the goldfinch’s body length to the teasel head as you paint, keeping the bird roughly the same length as the seed head it grips, which keeps the whole composition balanced rather than top-heavy.

If the red face patch bleeds into the surrounding white, wait for the white to dry completely first, then paint the red on top as a small crisp dot.

Palette: Red,Golden Yellow,Black,Warm Brown

Give a song thrush a little task with one holding a snail, a small storytelling detail that works well after several birds shown simply perched. Paint the thrush’s speckled brown breast first using a base of warm cream, then dot darker brown spots across it once dry with the tip of a small round brush, varying the spot sizes slightly for a natural look.

Add a snail shell in the bird’s beak or beside it on a stone, painted as a simple spiral built from one continuous curved line rather than several separate strokes, since a broken spiral looks messier than a smooth one.

The speckled breast is the part most likely to look overdone. Space the spots unevenly and leave plenty of the cream base showing between them rather than covering the whole breast.

A flat stone beneath the bird, painted in grey with a soft highlight along the top edge, grounds the whole scene and gives the snail somewhere believable to be.

Palette: Warm Cream,Dark Brown,Soft Grey,Warm Brown

Try a treecreeper next, a slim bird climbing straight up a trunk with its tail pressed flat against the bark for support. Paint the trunk first with strong vertical bark texture, then add the bird mid-climb, body angled upward and a thin curved beak probing into a crack in the bark.

Keep the treecreeper’s coloring soft and mottled brown on top with a clean white belly, which contrasts nicely against the darker bark and helps the small bird read clearly even though its camouflage markings are subtle.

This is a good subject for practicing dry brush texture: once the trunk’s base color is dry, drag a stiff brush loaded with very little dark brown paint upward in short strokes to suggest rough bark ridges without covering the lighter color underneath.

If a stiff bristle brush is not part of your current kit, an old, slightly worn soft brush works almost as well for this dry-drag texture.

Palette: Mottled Brown,Titanium White,Dark Brown,Warm Tan

Paint a whole little family of long-tailed tits huddled together on one branch, a sweet, busy composition after so many solo birds. Sketch four or five small round bodies overlapping in a tight row, each with a long thin tail trailing off at a slightly different angle, then paint them as one connected cluster rather than individual separate birds.

Build the soft pink, black and white plumage working from the back birds forward, so the ones at the front overlap and partially cover the ones behind, which creates real depth in the huddle.

Keeping five small birds in proportion to each other is the tricky part here. Measure each body against the first one you paint rather than guessing fresh each time, so the whole row stays consistent in scale.

For speed, paint three birds instead of five and simplify the back ones to soft silhouettes with less detail than the front bird.

Palette: Soft Pink,Black,Titanium White,Warm Brown

Bring in a crested tit next, the little pointed crest on its head the one detail that sets it apart from every other small bird on this list. Paint a few pine branches first, needles grouped in small radiating clusters painted with quick flicking strokes of deep green, then perch the tit among them.

Build the bird’s body in soft brown and white with a black and white striped face pattern, finishing with the pointed crest painted as a few raised, slightly spiky strokes rather than a smooth rounded cap.

Light coming through pine needles creates lots of small gaps, so paint the sky in patches between the needle clusters rather than as one solid background behind everything, which gives the scene real depth and a sense of looking up into branches.

If deep green pine needles start to look like a solid mass, break them up with a few lighter yellow-green strokes mixed in to suggest needles catching the light.

Palette: Deep Green,Yellow Green,Warm Brown,Titanium White

Give the list one exotic-looking visitor with a hoopoe on a stone wall, its fanned crest and bold striped wings making it one of the more dramatic birds here. Paint the stone wall first across the lower half of the canvas, individual stones blocked in with varied warm greys, then perch the hoopoe along the top edge.

Build the body in soft pinkish-tan with bold black and white bars across the wings and tail, finishing with the crest fanned open on top of the head in a row of peach and black-tipped feathers.

The crest is the part to slow down for. Paint it as a fan of individual slightly curved strokes radiating from one point at the back of the head, rather than a solid blob, since separation between the feathers is what makes it look raised and alert.

Vary the stone colors and shapes in the wall with warm greys, soft browns and a touch of moss in the cracks, which keeps the wall from reading as one flat grey slab.

Palette: Pinkish Tan,Black,Titanium White,Warm Grey

Close the whole list with a magpie caught stealing a ring, a cheeky, storybook ending full of personality. Paint the bird’s body first in bold black and white with a hint of blue-green sheen worked into the tail and wing feathers using a thin glaze over the black once it has dried.

Perch the magpie on a branch or low wall with the ring held in its beak, painted as a small gold circle with a tiny bright gem dot, kept noticeably smaller than the beak so it reads as a stolen treasure rather than an odd growth.

That blue-green sheen is easy to overdo. Keep it to thin, loose strokes along the darkest feather edges only, leaving most of the black matte, since too much sheen flattens the contrast that makes magpies striking in the first place.

If gold paint is not part of your kit, a warm yellow mixed with a touch of brown gives a convincing antique gold for the ring.

Palette: Black,Titanium White,Teal Sheen,Antique Gold

What to Do Next

Pick one bird that caught your eye, mix your warm browns and soft pastel sky colors ahead of time, and start with the background wash so it has time to dry while you sketch the bird lightly in pencil. A small canvas board or a sheet of heavy acrylic paper is all you need to get a finished, cozy piece by the end of today.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the easiest owl to paint for a beginner?

A barn owl with its simple heart-shaped face is the easiest start, since the whole head reads from just two soft shapes. Keep the eyes small and the feather edges loose with a dry brush rather than painting every feather individually.

What paint colors do I need for owl painting?

A small warm palette covers nearly every bird here: cream, warm brown, soft grey, pastel peach and moss green. Mix most shades from these five rather than buying a tube for every single bird or background color.

How do I paint fluffy owl feathers with acrylics?

Drybrush does the work: load a flat or round brush lightly, wipe off most of the paint, then flick short strokes outward from the body edge. This leaves soft, broken marks that read as down rather than a hard painted outline.

Can I paint these owl and bird ideas on paper instead of canvas?

Yes, heavy acrylic paper or a primed board both work fine for any idea on this list. Just avoid thin sketch paper, since repeated layers of acrylic paint will cause it to buckle or tear.

How long does one of these paintings usually take to finish?

Most of these owl and bird ideas finish within one sitting of thirty to sixty minutes once the sky or background has dried. Simpler subjects like a single perched bird go faster than busier scenes with several birds or added props.
