33 Cool Painting Ideas of Dreamlike Worlds, Floating Islands and Skies Full of Whales

8

Cool painting ideas work best when they bend something you already know: a whale that swims through clouds instead of water, a staircase that climbs to the moon, a house lit by day on one side and night on the other. These 33 scenes all play with scale, floating and worlds tucked inside ordinary objects, so each one gives you a small story to tell on a single canvas instead of just a pretty view.

Every idea below is sized for one sitting in acrylic, with a simple order of blocks and edges so you are never guessing what to paint first. Scroll through, pick the one that makes you want to start now, and treat the color notes as a starting point you can shift toward your own indigo, teal, coral or lilac.

Start with the easiest trick in this whole list: swap water for sky and let a whale swim through clouds above a sleeping city. Block the sky first in soft indigo fading to lilac near the horizon, then paint a low skyline of simple rectangle buildings in flat teal silhouette along the bottom edge.

Paint the whale last in a solid dusty blue-grey, body curved like a comma, and keep its outline clean so it reads against the sky instead of blending into it. Add a few cream cloud puffs trailing from its tail so it looks mid-swim rather than stuck.

The spot this goes wrong is a whale that is too big and crowds out the city below it, so sketch it first in pencil at roughly a third of the canvas height. If you do not have indigo, mix ultramarine with a touch of black for a close match.

Today’s tip: paint the clouds with a dry, almost-empty brush so they stay soft instead of chalky.

Palette: Indigo,Payne’s Grey,Soft Teal,Cream

After a whale in the sky, try a staircase climbing straight up into it. Paint the night sky first in deep indigo with a soft lilac glow building around where the moon will sit, then let that dry before anything else goes on top.

Keep the staircase in simple flat perspective: draw two lines converging slightly toward the top edge of the canvas so each step reads as climbing away from you, then paint every step the same pale cream so the eye follows them up without distraction. Use your longest straight edge or a ruler to keep the side rails even, since a wobbly staircase is the one thing that breaks this whole idea.

Finish with the moon as a solid cream circle sitting just above the top step, glowing softly into the sky around it with a dry, barely loaded brush. No ruler at home: fold a strip of paper to use as a straight edge instead.

Tip for today: paint the steps slightly smaller as they rise, which does most of the perspective work for you.

Palette: Deep Indigo,Soft Lilac,Cream,Warm White

Bring the sky down into someone’s hands next, with a girl holding a glass jar that has a whole tiny galaxy swirling inside it. Paint her as a simple silhouette or soft-shaded figure in muted coral or teal clothing, standing against a plain pale background so she does not compete with the jar.

The jar is the star here: paint it first as a pale cream oval with a darker rim, then drop in a small swirl of indigo and lilac inside it, flicking tiny dots of white gel pen or thinned white paint for stars once the paint is fully dry. If the swirl looks muddy, you likely blended wet paint into wet paint, so next time let the base indigo dry before adding the lilac spiral on top.

No gel pen on hand: a toothpick dipped in white paint makes fine enough dots for stars.

One tip to carry forward: keep the jar’s glass highlights to just two or three short white strokes, more than that and it stops looking like glass.

You Will Need

• white gel pen or fine white paint for star dots

Palette: Dusty Coral,Deep Indigo,Soft Lilac,Cream

Keep playing with scale and paint an hourglass where the top bulb holds a full ocean and the bottom one holds a beach it is slowly filling. Start with the hourglass frame in simple cream or warm gold lines, painted freehand or traced from a plate for the curved bulbs if circles make you nervous.

Fill the top bulb with flat teal water and a thin lilac horizon line, then fill the bottom bulb with a pale sand color and a few grains of teal “water” trickling down through the narrow neck. Eye level sits right at the middle neck of the hourglass, so keep both horizon lines close to that point rather than letting one drift higher than the other, which is what makes this idea look off.

No glass or plate to trace the curves: a jar lid or a cup works just as well for the rounded bulb shape.

Tip: paint the sand bottom slightly lighter than the sky above it so the beach still reads as sunlit even inside the glass.

You Will Need

• a round plate, jar lid or cup to trace the hourglass bulbs

Palette: Teal,Sandy Beige,Soft Lilac,Warm Gold

Carry the inside-an-object idea further with a lightbulb that holds a miniature forest glowing inside its glass. Paint the bulb’s outline first in thin cream or gold, leaving the inside empty, then fill that space with a few simple cone and ball-shaped trees in deep teal and forest green stacked at different heights.

Paint the metal screw base at the bottom in a flat warm grey so the bulb reads clearly against the pale background behind it. The edges of the glass are where this goes wrong, since a hard black outline flattens the whole glow, so instead soften the bulb’s rim with a slightly lighter cream than the background and let the trees inside glow against it without an outline at all.

If your green paint is looking flat, mix in a touch of yellow ochre for warmth where the “light” would hit the treetops.

Quick version for today: three simple trees and a plain glass outline is enough, a forty-minute version can add tiny glowing dots like fireflies between the branches.

Palette: Forest Green,Warm Grey,Cream,Soft Gold

Move from small objects to a bigger impossible view: a single door standing alone in a desert, open onto the sea instead of a room. Paint the desert first as a simple flat expanse of warm sand color under a pale lilac sky, with the door’s frame as a tall narrow rectangle standing upright with no walls around it.

Inside the open doorway, paint a flat teal sea meeting a soft horizon, completely different in color and light from the sand outside it, which is what sells the whole idea. Keep the door frame itself a plain warm wood brown so it reads as solid against both the dry desert and the sea beyond it.

The mistake to watch for is making the sea inside the door too similar in tone to the sky outside, so push the teal noticeably darker and cooler than the lilac sky around it.

If you enjoy this kind of built scene, the whimsical painting ideas list has more small worlds like it to try next.

Palette: Warm Sand,Soft Lilac,Deep Teal,Warm Brown

Bring an astronaut back down to earth, floating weightless just above a field of flowers instead of in space. Block the flower field first as a flat meadow of coral and lilac dots over soft green, then paint the astronaut’s suit as a simple rounded shape in warm white with a dark visor reflecting a tiny patch of sky.

Keep the astronaut’s pose loose and slightly curled, since a stiff straight body looks like it is standing rather than floating. Eye level sits low here, close to the flower tops, so the astronaut appears to hover just above them rather than hanging high in open sky, which keeps the whole scene feeling close and strange rather than distant.

If white paint looks too stark against the bright field, warm it slightly with a touch of yellow ochre before painting the suit.

One tip for today: paint the visor last, with a single curved white highlight, so it catches light like real glass.

Palette: Warm White,Soft Coral,Lilac,Meadow Green

Keep swapping elements and send a school of fish swimming between tree trunks instead of through water. Paint the forest first as a few simple tall trunks in warm brown against a soft teal-green canopy, leaving open gaps between them for the fish to swim through.

Paint the fish as simple curved teardrop shapes in coral and silver, grouped in a loose diagonal line moving through the gaps between trunks rather than scattered evenly, which is what makes a school read as one moving group instead of random shapes. Vary their sizes slightly so the ones further back look smaller and further away.

If the fish start looking too stiff and identical, turn a few at slightly different angles, since real schools never face exactly the same way.

No silver paint on hand: mix white with a touch of blue-grey for a close, calm shimmer instead.

Palette: Warm Brown,Forest Teal,Coral,Silver Grey

Ground level offers its own small window: a plain puddle on grey pavement reflecting a completely different, starry world below. Paint the pavement first in flat warm grey, then cut a simple irregular puddle shape out of it in deep indigo, edges slightly jagged like a real puddle rather than a perfect oval.

Inside that indigo shape, paint a small reflected scene of stars and a crescent moon, upside down from how it would sit in a real sky, since the whole trick depends on the reflection looking like its own separate world rather than a mirror copy of anything above the puddle. Add a thin cream rim of light around the puddle’s edge where pavement meets water.

The common slip is painting the puddle too smooth and round, so rough up its outline slightly with small inward dips once the base shape is dry.

Tip: scatter the stars unevenly rather than in a neat grid, which reads as far more natural and more like a real night sky.

Palette: Warm Grey,Deep Indigo,Cream,Soft Gold

From a calm puddle to something far less calm: a plain teacup with a small storm brewing inside it instead of tea. Paint the cup’s outline first in simple cream or white with a thin gold rim, keeping the shape plain so all the drama stays inside it.

Fill the cup’s interior with a swirling mix of indigo and teal clouds, then add a tiny flash of coral or cream lightning cutting through the swirl for contrast. The storm reads most convincingly with a loose, almost dry-brushed texture, so once the base clouds are down, drag a nearly dry brush lightly across them to break up the edges rather than leaving them perfectly smooth.

If the storm swirl looks too busy, step back and simplify it to two or three main cloud shapes rather than many small ones.

No gold paint for the rim: a thin line of yellow ochre mixed with a touch of white works just as well.

Palette: Cream,Deep Indigo,Teal,Warm Gold

Let a story grow literally: paint a tree rising straight out of the pages of an open book lying flat. Start with the book as two simple cream page shapes meeting in the middle, spine resting on a plain pale surface, pages left blank with no readable lines or lettering on them.

Paint the tree trunk rising from the book’s spine, then build its canopy as a few soft rounded clusters in teal and lilac rather than a mass of tiny individual leaves, which keeps the shape calm and readable from across a room. Let a few small painted leaves drift off the page edges to suggest the book is still gently “turning into” the tree.

If the canopy looks too heavy, thin it at the top with lighter dabs of cream mixed into the teal, which reads as light catching the highest leaves.

Today’s tip: curl the open pages very slightly rather than drawing them perfectly flat, which makes the whole book feel more real.

Palette: Cream,Warm Brown,Teal,Soft Lilac

Scale up again with a small floating island, grass on top and a waterfall pouring straight off its broken underside into open sky. Paint the island’s top first as a simple rounded green mound, then paint its underside as jagged brown rock, torn and uneven rather than a clean straight cut.

Let the waterfall fall from a gap in that rocky underside as a thin, slightly curved white-and-cream ribbon, fading into soft mist dots near the bottom rather than ending in a hard line. Eye level sits slightly below the island here, which is what makes it feel like it is floating above you rather than sitting at your own height.

If the waterfall looks stiff and straight, add a gentle curve partway down and a few lighter streaks within it using a dry brush.

No white paint for the mist: a very pale cream mixed thin with water gives the same soft, breaking-up effect.

Palette: Meadow Green,Warm Brown,Soft Cream,Sky Lilac

Bring the scale back down to something quiet: a cat sitting on a windowsill, watching planets drift past outside instead of the usual street. Paint the window frame first in simple flat wood brown, then fill the glass with deep indigo night sky and a few soft round planets in coral, teal and lilac, each with a thin ring or two if you like.

Paint the cat as a simple silhouette sitting with its back mostly to you, tail curled around its paws, so the planets stay the clear focus of the scene. If the planets look flat and paper-thin, add one small curved highlight of cream on the side facing an invisible light source, which gives each one just enough roundness.

The common mistake is cramming in too many planets, so three or four, clearly spaced, reads far calmer than a crowded sky.

Tip for today: keep the cat’s silhouette completely flat and dark, which makes the glowing planets behind it feel brighter by contrast.

Palette: Deep Indigo,Coral,Teal,Soft Lilac

Send a small train across a bridge that floats high above the clouds instead of a valley. Paint the cloud layer first as soft, flat cream and lilac puffs filling most of the lower canvas, then paint a simple stone or iron bridge arching across the middle, resting on nothing but cloud below it.

Paint the train as a few simple rectangle carriages in muted teal or coral, small enough that the bridge clearly reads as the larger structure, with a thin trail of steam or smoke drifting back from the front carriage. Eye level sits level with the bridge itself, slightly above the clouds, which is what makes the whole scene feel suspended rather than grounded.

If the bridge looks too thin and flimsy to hold a train, thicken its support pillars slightly where they vanish into the cloud below.

No fine brush for the thin smoke trail: a dry stiff brush dragged lightly gives a softer, more convincing wisp.

Palette: Cream,Soft Lilac,Stone Grey,Muted Teal

Turn to a face next, a woman’s profile where her hair and the space inside her silhouette hold a full mountain landscape instead of skin and hair. Paint her outline first as a simple clean profile shape, then treat the inside of that shape as its own small canvas: layered mountain ridges in deep teal and indigo near the back, lighter lilac ridges in front, and a soft cream sky peeking through near her jaw and brow.

Keep her outline itself completely flat and plain, a single warm neutral tone, so all the color and detail stays contained inside the silhouette rather than leaking onto her edges. The layered ridges are the trick to get right, so paint the furthest ridge first and work forward, each new ridge slightly lower and lighter than the one behind it.

If the profile shape feels hard to draw freehand, trace it loosely from a simple photo reference turned into a side silhouette first.

Today’s tip: leave one small patch of her hair as plain cream sky with nothing in it, which gives the eye somewhere to rest.

Palette: Warm Neutral,Deep Teal,Deep Indigo,Soft Lilac

Give the sky its own small worker: a tiny man standing on a tall ladder, hanging the moon from an invisible hook like it is an ordinary lamp. Paint the night sky first in flat indigo, then paint the ladder as two long converging lines in warm brown, leaning against nothing but open air.

Paint the man as a simple small silhouette standing near the top rung, one arm raised holding a thin cream cord that runs up to the moon above him, painted as a plain glowing cream circle just like a lamp shade. Keep him genuinely small against the moon and sky, since making him too large breaks the whole sense of scale this idea depends on.

If the ladder looks unstable floating in open sky, anchor it visually with a thin cloud wisp wrapped loosely around its base.

No long ruler for the ladder rails: a paint stirrer or a strip of cardboard makes a steady straight edge instead.

You Will Need

• a long straight edge for the ladder rails

Palette: Deep Indigo,Warm Brown,Cream,Soft Lilac

Play with scale the other way now: a giant open hand gently cradling a tiny village in its palm. Paint the hand first as a large, simple warm-toned shape filling most of the lower canvas, fingers loosely curled rather than flat and stiff, which keeps it looking protective rather than like a platform.

Build the village in the palm as a cluster of small flat rooftops in coral and teal, a few thin chimneys, and a plain pale sky behind them rising just above the fingers. Keep every building tiny and simple, since too much detail in the village competes with the hand for attention and the whole point is the size difference between them.

If the hand’s proportions feel off, compare the length of the fingers to the width of the palm before painting, fingers are usually closer in length to the palm’s width than people expect.

Tip for today: add one soft shadow where a finger curls near the village, which does most of the work of making the hand feel three-dimensional.

Palette: Warm Skin Tone,Coral,Teal,Soft Cream

Drop an ordinary armchair into an extraordinary place: a plain red armchair floating on a perfectly calm, flat sea with nothing else around it. Paint the sea first as a wide flat expanse of soft teal meeting a pale lilac sky at a clean, simple horizon line.

Paint the armchair sitting low, as if gently resting on the water’s surface rather than sinking into it, in a solid warm coral-red with simple flat shading on one side to suggest its rolled arms and cushions. A thin reflection of the chair painted directly beneath it in slightly darker, wavier red grounds it on the water instead of letting it look pasted on top.

If the sea looks too busy, resist adding waves, since the calm and the stillness are what make a floating armchair feel strange rather than chaotic.

No red paint on hand: mix coral with a touch of burgundy for a close, warm substitute.

If you like quiet single-object scenes like this, the easy acrylic painting ideas for beginners list has more simple setups to borrow from.

Palette: Coral Red,Soft Teal,Pale Lilac,Warm Cream

Turn the usual umbrella scene backward: an open umbrella standing alone with rain falling only in the small patch of ground directly beneath it, dry everywhere else. Paint the umbrella’s canopy first in a simple flat coral or teal, then paint the ground around it dry and plain in warm cream, leaving one clearly marked circle underneath it darker and wetter looking.

Inside that wet circle, add a few thin straight lines of rain falling, with a scatter of small puddle reflections, while the dry ground around stays completely untouched by any rain marks at all. Keeping that contrast sharp between wet and dry is the whole idea, so paint the boundary between them as a clean edge rather than a soft gradient.

If the rain lines look too stiff and uniform, vary their length and angle slightly so they feel like falling drops rather than ruled lines.

Today’s tip: tilt the umbrella slightly rather than painting it perfectly upright, which makes the whole scene feel more like a captured moment.

Palette: Coral,Warm Cream,Soft Grey,Teal

Give a lighthouse an unusual job: instead of a plain beam of light, let it shine a wide cone of stars out across the night sea. Paint the lighthouse tower first as a simple striped or plain cream and red cylinder on a dark rocky point, then paint the sea below it in flat deep indigo meeting a slightly lighter indigo sky.

Build the beam as a wide, softly edged cone in pale cream, then once it is dry, scatter small white star dots inside that cone only, denser near the lighthouse and thinning out toward the far edge, which keeps the light feeling like it is genuinely traveling outward. The beam’s edge is where this idea can look stiff, so soften it with a dry brush before adding the stars inside it.

No white gel pen for the stars: a toothpick dipped in thinned white paint makes equally fine dots.

Tip for today: keep the rocky point beneath the lighthouse small and dark, which pushes all the attention onto the glowing beam above it.

You Will Need

• white gel pen or a toothpick for star dots

Palette: Deep Indigo,Cream,Warm Red,Dark Rock Grey

Bring a living creature into the dreamlike mix: a deer standing quietly whose antlers are made of real leafy tree branches instead of bone. Paint the deer’s body first as a simple soft silhouette in warm brown, standing in a plain pale clearing, then build the antlers growing from its head as a few curving branch shapes in the same warm brown.

Add small clusters of leaves along those branch-antlers in soft teal and lilac, keeping the leaf clumps simple and rounded rather than filling in every twig, since too much detail there turns antlers back into an ordinary tree and loses the deer underneath. Leave the rest of the deer’s body plain and unbranched so the antlers stay the clear focus.

If the antler branches look too stiff and straight, curve them gently outward and let two or three twigs branch unevenly rather than symmetrically.

One tip for today: keep the deer’s expression and stance completely calm and still, which makes the strange antlers feel natural rather than alarming.

Palette: Warm Brown,Soft Teal,Lilac,Pale Cream

Send a small wooden rowboat out onto a sea made entirely of soft clouds instead of water. Paint the cloud sea first as rolling, flat cream and lilac puffs across the lower half of the canvas, slightly denser and more wave-like near the bottom edge where the boat sits.

Paint the rowboat resting in a gentle dip between two cloud puffs, in warm brown with simple plank lines, oars resting inside rather than rowing, which keeps the whole mood calm and drifting rather than busy. A pale sky above with one or two stars or a faint moon finishes the quiet feeling.

If the clouds end up looking too flat and smooth to read as a “sea,” vary their puff sizes and let a few overlap slightly, which gives the sense of gentle swell.

No pale lilac on hand: mix a touch of blue into white for a close, soft substitute.

Palette: Warm Brown,Cream,Soft Lilac,Pale Sky

Play with light this time: a plain mirror hanging on the wall of a dark room, reflecting a bright sunny day instead of the dim room around it. Paint the room first in flat, muted indigo and grey tones, simple and mostly empty, so the darkness reads clearly before anything else.

Paint the mirror’s frame as a plain warm wood or gold rectangle, then fill its reflective surface entirely with a small bright scene: pale cream sky, a touch of coral sun, a strip of green or teal landscape, nothing like the dark room holding it. The contrast between the two lighting conditions is the whole trick, so keep the dark room noticeably darker and the mirror’s reflection noticeably brighter rather than letting them meet in the middle.

If the mirror’s bright scene looks like it belongs in the room’s actual lighting, it is too dim, so push its colors a full step lighter than feels natural.

Tip for today: add one thin sliver of reflected light spilling just past the mirror’s frame onto the dark wall beside it.

Palette: Deep Indigo,Warm Grey,Cream,Coral

Flip an entire street of houses upside down and let it hang from the sky instead of sitting on the ground. Paint a pale sky first across the whole canvas, then build a simple row of small house shapes along the top edge, rooftops pointing downward and chimneys trailing up into the sky above them.

Keep each house a simple flat block in a different soft color, coral, teal and lilac mixed along the row, with plain rectangle windows and no readable detail inside them. A thin, clearly grounded street or line of ordinary trees along the bottom of the canvas gives the eye something normal to compare the upside-down row against, which is what makes the flip actually register.

If the houses look like they are simply floating rather than hanging from the sky, add a few small chimney-smoke wisps drifting upward from their highest points, reinforcing which way is “up” for them.

Today’s tip: keep the ordinary ground level plain and calm, all the strangeness belongs in the row above it.

Palette: Coral,Teal,Lilac,Pale Sky

Send a small folded paper boat sailing down an impossible staircase made entirely of flowing water. Paint the staircase first as a series of flat, slightly tilted steps in soft teal, each one overlapping the next with a thin white edge where the water spills from one step down to the one below it.

Paint the paper boat sitting on one of the upper steps in plain cream with simple fold lines, small enough that the staircase clearly reads as the larger structure around it. Perspective matters most here, so keep every step the same width but let them shrink very slightly as they rise toward the back of the canvas, which gives the staircase a believable sense of depth without needing complicated linework.

If the water spilling between steps looks too stiff, soften the overlap lines with a slightly wet brush before they dry completely.

No fine brush for the fold lines on the boat: the edge of an old gift card dipped in paint makes a clean, thin line too.

Palette: Soft Teal,White,Cream,Pale Lilac

Shrink an entire world down to something you could almost hold: a tiny round planet with just one tree and a single swing hanging from its branch. Trace a simple circle for the planet using a cup or jar lid, then fill it with flat meadow green on top curving into warm brown rock underneath, where the curve of the circle naturally suggests the planet’s edge.

Paint one simple tree standing on top of the little planet, trunk and a rounded canopy in soft teal, with a thin rope swing hanging from one branch, seat empty and swaying slightly to one side. Surround the whole small planet with plain pale sky and a few distant stars, which makes its smallness feel deliberate rather than accidental.

If the planet’s curve looks uneven, go back over the traced circle outline once more before filling it in, a clean circle does most of the work of selling the whole idea.

Next time you paint this one, try a different single object on the planet instead of a swing: a lamp post, a bench, or a tiny door.

You Will Need

• a round plate, jar lid or cup to trace the planet

Palette: Meadow Green,Warm Brown,Soft Teal,Pale Sky

Give an ordinary keyhole a view it has no business having: a glowing sunset visible through it instead of a dark room. Paint the door or wall around the keyhole first in flat, muted grey or indigo, plain and a little dim, with the keyhole shape itself cut out as a simple dark silhouette.

Inside that keyhole shape, paint a small, bright sunset scene: warm coral and gold sky meeting a thin dark horizon line, completely different in mood from the dim wall surrounding it. Keep the keyhole’s outline crisp and clean, since a soft or blurry edge there makes the sunset look painted on top rather than glimpsed through an opening.

If the contrast feels too subtle, darken the wall around the keyhole a touch further, the dimmer the surroundings, the more the small sunset glows.

Today’s tip: let one thin beam of that warm light spill just slightly past the keyhole’s edge onto the dark wall beside it.

Palette: Muted Indigo,Warm Coral,Soft Gold,Dark Grey

Flip ordinary scale entirely and paint a few giant flowers towering over a small cluster of tiny people walking beneath them. Paint the flowers first, two or three large blooms in coral and lilac with simple rounded petals, tall stems rising well above the top of the canvas edge so their full height is only implied.

Paint the tiny people as small, simple silhouettes near the base of the stems, no bigger than the width of a single petal, which is what makes the flowers read as genuinely enormous rather than just tall. Keep their poses casual, walking or looking up, so the scene feels like an ordinary stroll through an extraordinary place.

If the flowers end up looking only slightly oversized rather than genuinely giant, compare one tiny person’s height directly against one petal before finishing, the petal should dwarf them completely.

For more giant and dreamlike florals like this, the purple painting ideas list has a few more lilac and violet scenes worth a look.

Palette: Coral,Lilac,Meadow Green,Pale Sky

Give a single house two different times of day at once: bright daylight on one side and a dark starry night on the other, split cleanly down the middle. Paint the daylight half first in warm cream and soft coral, a plain blue sky, sunlit windows, then paint the night half in deep indigo with a small moon and a few stars, same house shape mirrored exactly on the other side of the dividing line.

Keep the roofline, windows and chimney identical on both halves so the eye clearly reads it as one house rather than two different buildings pushed together, with only the lighting and sky changed. The dividing line down the middle is where this can look messy, so paint it as one clean, straight vertical edge rather than a soft blend between the two times of day.

If matching the house shape on both sides feels tricky freehand, lightly pencil the full outline first, then split your color choices once the shape itself is settled.

Tip for today: let a single tree beside the house also split in color, sunlit green on one side and shadowed indigo on the other, which ties the whole idea together.

Palette: Warm Cream,Coral,Deep Indigo,Soft Gold

Set an entire library loose: rows of books lifting off the shelves and flying through the air like a flock of birds. Paint the shelves and room first in plain muted brown and cream, kept simple and a little dim, then paint a handful of books with their covers slightly fanned open, angled upward in a loose diagonal flock moving toward one corner of the canvas.

Keep each flying book a simple flat rectangle in a different soft color, coral, teal or lilac, with no readable titles or lettering on any cover, just plain flat color blocks catching a bit of light along one edge. The flock reads best when the books vary slightly in size and angle rather than all facing the same way, much like a real group of birds in flight.

If the flying books look stiff and flat, add one small curved motion line trailing behind two or three of them to suggest movement.

No wide flat brush for the shelves: the edge of a cut sponge gives a similar clean, even band of color.

Palette: Muted Brown,Cream,Coral,Teal

Build toward a bigger, more dramatic finish with an ocean wave curling over into a tunnel, its inside glowing with stars instead of water spray. Paint the outer wave first in deep teal with a lighter foam edge along its curling crest, shaping it as one large, smooth curved form rather than many small choppy waves.

Paint the inside of the curl, the hollow tunnel part, in deep indigo once the outer teal has dried, then scatter small white star dots through that dark curved space, denser toward the back of the tunnel and thinning near the open mouth of the wave. The curl’s shape is the hardest part, so sketch its curve lightly in pencil first, following a single smooth arc rather than building it from straight segments.

If the stars inside the tunnel feel scattered without direction, let them follow the curve of the wave itself rather than a random grid.

No white gel pen for stars: a fine brush loaded with thinned white paint works just as well for small dots.

You Will Need

• white gel pen or fine brush for star dots

Palette: Deep Teal,Deep Indigo,White Foam,Pale Cream

Cut a plain rectangular window straight into a daytime sky, revealing a dark starry night through the opening instead of more daylight. Paint the daytime sky first across the whole canvas in soft pale blue or lilac with a few cream clouds, then mark out a simple floating rectangle window shape with a thin plain frame, hanging in open air with nothing holding it up.

Fill the inside of that window with deep indigo night sky, a small moon and a scatter of stars, kept completely separate in tone and color from the daytime sky surrounding it. The window’s frame is what sells the whole illusion, so keep it thin, straight and perfectly flat in a plain cream or grey, never patterned or decorated, so it reads clearly as a frame rather than another shape floating in the sky.

If the night scene inside the window looks too pale next to the bright day around it, push the indigo several shades darker than feels natural, the contrast is the entire point.

Tip for today: let one small cloud from the daytime sky drift just slightly in front of the window’s frame, which helps it feel like it is truly floating in that sky rather than pasted over it.

Palette: Pale Sky Blue,Deep Indigo,Cream,Soft Grey

Close the list the way it started, with something from the sea set loose somewhere it has no business being: a jellyfish drifting gently through a bright, sunny meadow instead of open water. Paint the meadow first as a simple flat field of soft green and coral wildflowers under a pale blue sky, calm and ordinary in every way except for what floats above it.

Paint the jellyfish as a simple rounded bell shape in soft lilac or pale pink, trailing a few long, gently curving tentacles down toward the grass below it, drifting rather than falling, as if the air itself were water. Keep the tentacles soft and slightly translucent by thinning your paint with water before the final pass, which gives them a gentle, floating quality rather than a solid, heavy one.

If the jellyfish looks too stiff and symmetrical, curve a couple of tentacles at slightly different lengths and angles, since a little unevenness is what makes it feel like it is actually drifting on a breeze.

One tip for today: paint a faint lilac shadow on the grass directly beneath the jellyfish, small and soft, which is often the one detail that convinces the eye it is really floating above the meadow.

Palette: Soft Lilac,Meadow Green,Coral,Pale Sky Blue

What to Do Next

Pick one idea that already feels half finished in your head, sketch its main shapes lightly in pencil on a small canvas, and block in the background color first so every later shape has something to sit against. One finished dreamlike scene today is a better start than a long list of ones you only planned.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of paint works best for cool painting ideas like these?

Acrylic paint works best, since it dries fast, layers cleanly and gives the smooth flat color blocks these dreamlike scenes need. Gouache is a close substitute if you prefer a more matte, opaque finish.

How do I make a floating object actually look like it is floating?

Add a soft, slightly darker shadow or reflection directly beneath the object, even a small one. Without it, most objects read as stuck or pasted rather than hovering in open air or water.

Do I need to be good at drawing to paint these dreamlike scenes?

No, most of these ideas rely on simple flat shapes rather than detailed drawing skill. A light pencil sketch first keeps proportions and placement under control before any paint goes on.

How small a canvas can I use for one of these ideas?

An eight by ten inch canvas works well for most of these scenes, since the subjects are designed to fill a small frame with one clear focal point. Smaller canvases simply mean fewer, bolder shapes.

What is the easiest idea on this list to start with?

The whale swimming through clouds above a city or the staircase to the moon are the simplest starting points, since both rely on just a few large flat shapes and a clean silhouette.
