33 Christmas Tree Painting Ideas From Pink Tinsel Trees to Paper Honeycomb Trees

38

A christmas tree painting is the fastest way to get something festive on the wall before the kettle boils, and these little scenes are built for exactly that. Each tree sits inside its own small moment: a car roof, a snow globe, a café window, a girl on a ladder, so you get the fun of a whole story on one small canvas.

Scroll through and pick whatever matches your mood tonight. There is a quick ten-minute version for the ones with less detail and a slower forty-minute version for the ones that reward a second layer, so nothing here needs more than one sitting.

Start simple with a pink tinsel tree standing alone in a plain white room, because the empty background does most of the work for you. Block the wall and floor in off-white first, letting the brushstrokes show a little rather than going perfectly flat.

Once that is dry, build the tree shape with short choppy strokes of dusty pink and a touch of warm white mixed in, dragging the brush upward and outward so the bristle marks read as tinsel strands. Keep the triangle loose rather than geometric, since real tinsel trees are soft and uneven at the edges.

The common mistake is making the pink too uniform and flat, which kills the tinsel feel. Fix it by dry brushing a second, lighter pink over the first layer once it is dry, letting some of the darker pink peek through underneath.

Finish with a handful of small cream dots for lights, placed unevenly rather than in a grid. If you do not have a fan or stippling brush, an old toothbrush works for flicking texture into the tinsel edges.

You Will Need

• small canvas
• stiff bristle brush
• round detail brush
• white and pink acrylic
• scrap card for testing

Palette: Dusty Rose,Titanium White,Warm Cream,Soft Blush

Try mixing a tiny bit of gold into the cream dots instead of plain white, so the lights pick up warmth against all that cool pink and white.

Move from soft tinsel to something more graphic with a honeycomb paper tree in berry red, sitting on a simple wooden shelf. This one is really about pattern, so start by painting the tree as a flat red triangle and let it dry completely before adding any texture.

Once dry, use the tip of a round brush or even the end of a pencil dipped in a slightly darker red to stamp small arched lines across the triangle, mimicking the fanned paper folds of a honeycomb decoration. Work in loose rows rather than a strict grid, since real paper trees are never perfectly even.

If the stamped lines start looking too mechanical, soften a few with a dry finger or soft brush so the pattern breathes. No stamping tool on hand? The flat edge of an old gift card works just as well for pressing in those little arcs.

Paint the shelf underneath in a warm honey wood tone, and finish with one or two small ornaments resting beside the tree for scale. Keep your reds in the berry family rather than fire-engine bright, which keeps this feeling modern rather than like a decoration catalog.

You Will Need

• small canvas
• round brush
• pencil or gift card edge for stamping
• berry red and wood-tone acrylic

Palette: Berry Red,Deep Maroon,Honey Wood,Warm Cream

Look up real paper honeycomb trees before you start, so you get a feel for how the fan shapes overlap and fall into natural uneven rows.

Give the scene some movement with a Christmas tree tied to the roof of a red car, parked or driving along a plain winter road. Begin with the car as a simple rounded shape in a flat bright red, keeping the body smooth with a soft brush before any detail goes in.

Once the car shape is dry, paint the tree lying across the roof with the same choppy green strokes you would use for a standing tree, just tipped onto its side. Add a thin dark rope line or two crossing the tree to hint it is tied down, and a strip of warm white or pale blue behind for sky.

The easiest place to go wrong here is the car windows, which can flatten the whole painting if they are too dark or too perfectly drawn. Keep them a soft grey-blue with one quick highlight stroke rather than trying to paint reflections in detail.

Finish with a dusting of white dots for snow in the air. If straight lines for the car body feel tricky freehand, lay down a strip of painter’s tape as a guide for the roofline and peel it back once dry.

You Will Need

• small canvas
• flat brush for the car body
• fine liner brush
• painter’s tape (optional)

Palette: Cadmium Red,Deep Green,Slate Blue,Snow White

Angle the tree slightly off the centerline of the roof rather than dead straight, which reads as more natural and a little bit charming.

Keep the size honest with a small tabletop tree planted in a terracotta pot, sitting by a window with soft daylight behind it. Start with the window as a simple pale rectangle of light, blocking in the glow before you touch the tree at all.

Stand the eye level at the tree’s own height rather than looking down on it, which makes this small tree feel like it really belongs on a tabletop rather than shrunk from a big one. Paint the terracotta pot next in warm orange-brown, then build the tree up in layered greens working from the trunk outward.

Watch the pot rim, which often ends up too thick and clunky. A single confident curved stroke for the top edge reads far better than several hesitant ones layered on top of each other.

Add a few small cream or gold baubles with the tip of a round brush once the greens are dry. No terracotta paint on hand? Mix burnt sienna with a touch of white for the same warm clay tone.

You Will Need

• small canvas
• round brush
• burnt sienna or terracotta acrylic
• white acrylic for the window light

Palette: Terracotta,Forest Green,Pale Daylight,Antique Gold

Paint the window glow slightly warmer in the center and cooler at the edges, which gives a soft sense of real daylight without any extra detail.

Strip the decoration back to just one idea with a tree decorated only with bows, nothing else competing for attention. Paint the tree first in your usual layered greens, keeping it a little looser than usual since the bows will carry all the detail.

Once the green is dry, add the bows with a small flat or round brush in two strokes each: one loop left, one loop right, with a short tail hanging below. Space them unevenly across the tree rather than in neat rows, which keeps the eye moving naturally through the branches.

Bows often end up looking like stiff triangles rather than soft fabric. Loosen your wrist and let the brush wobble slightly on each loop, and if a bow looks too hard-edged, soften one side with a dry brush before it sets.

Pick one bow color and stick with it for every bow on the tree for a clean, modern look, whether that is a deep burgundy, a dusty pink or a classic plaid ribbon red. A fine liner brush works well if you do not have a tiny flat brush for the tails.

You Will Need

• small canvas
• small flat or round brush
• fine liner brush
• ribbon-color acrylic

Palette: Forest Green,Burgundy Ribbon,Cream,Soft Black

Try tying every bow the same size and color first, then do a second version with bows that get smaller toward the top of the tree for extra polish.

Turn the lights down for a tree glowing with gold and cream baubles in a dark room, where the background does almost nothing and the tree does everything. Paint the background first in a deep charcoal or near-black green, covering the whole canvas before the tree goes in at all.

Picture the light source coming from somewhere low and off to one side, maybe a lamp just out of frame, so the baubles catch brighter on one edge and stay shadowed on the other. Build the tree in dark greens first, keeping most of it barely lighter than the background.

Add the gold and cream baubles last with small dabs of a round brush, placing a tiny white highlight dot on the lit side of each one. Skip highlights on a few baubles entirely so the eye has somewhere to rest.

If the dark background ends up flat and lifeless, scumble a slightly lighter green over it in a few patches with a dry brush before it fully cures. Metallic gold acrylic gives the richest effect, but a mix of yellow ochre and white works as a stand-in.

You Will Need

• small canvas
• round detail brush
• metallic gold acrylic (or yellow ochre and white)
• dark green and black acrylic

Palette: Near Black Green,Deep Forest,Metallic Gold,Warm Cream

Step back and squint at the canvas before adding final highlight dots, which makes it much easier to see which baubles actually catch the light.

Bring in some life with a family carrying a tree through the woods, a cozy little scene rather than a single still object. Keep the figures as simple silhouettes, two or three rounded shapes in coats and hats, rather than attempting detailed faces at this size.

Measure the tree against the tallest figure before you paint it, since a tree carried on someone’s shoulder should sit roughly the same height as the people carrying it, not dwarf them. Block in the snowy ground and bare winter trees behind first, then add the figures and carried tree on top once that layer is dry.

Faces are the easiest trap here. Leave them as a soft blank oval or a single small dot of shadow rather than trying to paint features, which keeps the figures charming instead of awkward.

Finish with a scatter of white dots for falling snow over the whole scene. If silhouettes feel tricky to place, sketch the family lightly in pencil first and check the proportions before committing any paint.

You Will Need

• small canvas
• round and liner brush
• pencil for the initial sketch
• white acrylic for snow

Palette: Charcoal Navy,Snow White,Bark Brown,Forest Green

Keep the whole family and tree as one connected dark shape against the pale snow, which reads clearly even from across the room.

Widen the scene further with a tree in a town square surrounded by tiny skaters circling below it. Place the horizon line low on the canvas so the tree towers above the small figures, which instantly gives this painting a sense of scale without any extra effort.

Paint the tree first as a tall, fairly simple triangle strung with small light dots, then add the ice rink beneath it as a pale blue-grey oval shape. Skaters can be nothing more than small dark comma shapes with a thin leg line each, scattered around the rink at different angles.

Too many identical skaters can look stiff and repeated. Vary their size slightly and angle a few sideways or bending forward, which suggests real movement without any real detail.

Add warm lit windows in soft gold dotted along any buildings in the background. If painting tiny figures feels fiddly with a brush, try a fine paint pen for just the skaters once the rink has dried.

You Will Need

• small canvas
• fine paint pen or liner brush
• pale blue-grey acrylic for the ice
• gold acrylic for window lights

Palette: Deep Forest,Ice Grey,Warm Gold,Soft Black

Try this one on a slightly wider canvas than square if you have one, since the extra width gives the skating rink room to breathe around the tree.

Bring the view back indoors with a tree glowing through the window of a dark cabin seen from outside. Picture the light source as entirely inside the window, so everything outside stays in cool shadow while the window itself glows warm.

Paint the exterior wall and snowy ground first in deep cool blues and greys, keeping them fairly dark overall. Then paint the window as a warm golden rectangle, and only once that is dry, suggest the tree inside with simple dark green shapes and a few bright dots for lights silhouetted against the glow.

If the window glow looks weak, it is usually because the surrounding darkness is not dark enough. Deepen the exterior shadows rather than brightening the window further, and the contrast will do the work for you.

Add one small puddle of warm light spilling onto the snow just below the window. A limited palette knife dab works well for the snow texture if you want something other than a brush for that part.

You Will Need

• small canvas
• round brush
• palette knife (optional)
• deep blue and warm gold acrylic

Palette: Midnight Blue,Warm Gold,Deep Forest,Snow White

Look at real nighttime window photos for reference on how warm light spills unevenly onto snow, since it rarely forms a neat rectangle.

Shift to a wide outdoor view with rows of trees on a tree farm catching the last light of sunset. Lay in the sky first as a soft gradient from warm peach near the horizon up to a dusky purple-blue at the top, blending while the paint is still wet.

Once the sky is dry, paint rows of small trees getting smaller and closer together as they recede toward the horizon, which is the simplest way to suggest distance without any real perspective drawing. Keep the nearest trees darkest and most detailed, and let the farthest ones soften into almost flat silhouettes.

A common issue is rows that look too even and planted in a straight grid. Stagger the spacing slightly and vary a few tree heights, which feels far more like a real working field.

Finish with a line of fence posts or a small tractor path cutting through for scale. If blending the sky smoothly feels hard with a brush, a slightly damp sponge works well for softening the color transition.

You Will Need

• small canvas
• soft blending brush or sponge
• warm peach and purple acrylic
• small round brush for distant trees

Palette: Sunset Peach,Dusky Mauve,Deep Forest,Warm Brown

Paint the sky brighter than feels natural at first, since it always reads calmer once the dark tree silhouettes go in on top.

Switch materials entirely for a silver vintage aluminum tree, all sharp metallic branches rather than soft greenery. Mix your silver from white with a touch of grey and the faintest hint of blue, since straight silver paint out of the tube often reads flat and chalky.

Build the tree with straight, slightly spiky strokes rather than the usual soft rounded greenery strokes, since aluminum tree branches are thin, stiff and evenly spaced. Work from the trunk outward in tiers, leaving visible gaps of background between each tier rather than filling the whole triangle solid.

If the metallic effect looks dull, add a few sharper white highlight strokes along the top edge of each branch once the base silver is dry, which tricks the eye into reading shine. No metallic paint on hand? A mix of white, black and a tiny bit of blue gets close enough.

A rotating color wheel light was the classic finishing touch on real aluminum trees, so try adding a soft glow of pink, blue or gold at its base to nod to that without overcomplicating the painting.

You Will Need

• small canvas
• fine liner brush
• metallic silver acrylic (or mixed grey)
• white acrylic for highlights

Palette: Cool Silver,Charcoal Grey,Titanium White,Soft Pink Glow

Keep the background plain and mid-toned behind this tree, since the silver branches need contrast to read clearly and get lost against white.

Warm things back up with a tree decorated with dried orange slices tucked between the branches. Paint the greenery first in your usual layered strokes, then let it dry fully before adding a single dried orange decoration on top, since wet green and wet orange will muddy together instantly.

Picture each orange slice lit from one side, the same direction as any other light in the scene, so one edge of each slice stays bright and the other falls into soft shadow. Paint them as simple circles in warm burnt orange first, then add a few thin radiating lines from the center for the segment texture.

The edges of a dried orange are soft and a little uneven, never a crisp circle. If yours looks too perfect, dab the outer rim with a dry brush loaded with a slightly darker orange to rough it up.

Tuck two or three slices into the tree rather than covering it, letting plenty of green show between them. A cotton bud works surprisingly well for softening the edge of each orange if a brush feels too precise.

You Will Need

• small canvas
• round brush
• cotton bud for softening edges
• burnt orange acrylic

Palette: Burnt Orange,Deep Forest,Warm Cream,Rust Brown

Try adding a tiny cinnamon stick or two in warm brown beside an orange slice for an even cozier, more textured look next time you paint this one.

Add some personality with a small dachshund curled up under the tree, half asleep in its warm glow. Compare the dog’s length against the width of the tree’s base before you paint it, since a dachshund’s long low body should stretch out noticeably rather than reading as a round generic dog shape.

Paint the tree and its base first, then build the dachshund on top once dry, starting with its long simple back line and short legs tucked underneath. Keep the shape soft and rounded rather than sharply outlined, since a sleeping dog reads as one gentle curved silhouette.

Ears and snout are where this can go wrong, often ending up too pointed or too large for the body. Keep the ear shapes soft and drooping and the snout fairly short and blunt for that classic dachshund look.

Finish with one small warm highlight along the dog’s back where the tree lights catch its fur. A short-haired round brush gives the smoothest coat; if you only have a bristle brush, soften your final strokes with a slightly damp finger.

You Will Need

• small canvas
• round brush
• soft synthetic brush for the dog’s coat
• warm brown acrylic

Palette: Chestnut Brown,Deep Forest,Warm Gold,Soft Black

Reference a real sleeping dachshund photo for the curl of the tail and the tuck of the legs, since that small detail sells the whole pose.

Take the tree outside again with a small decorated tree standing on a city balcony, apartment lights glowing in the background. Set the eye level roughly level with the balcony railing, which lets you show both the tree up close and a hint of the skyline beyond without overcomplicating the perspective.

Paint the distant buildings first as soft, simplified blocks with small square windows of warm light, keeping edges a little blurry since they sit far away. Once dry, add the balcony railing as a few confident straight lines, then paint the tree standing just inside it, crisper and more detailed than anything behind it.

Distant buildings often end up too sharp and compete with the tree. Soften their edges with a slightly dry brush or a light haze of pale grey-blue glazed over the top once dry.

Add strings of small lights along the railing itself for extra sparkle. If straight balcony lines feel tricky freehand, use the edge of a ruler to guide a pencil line first.

You Will Need

• small canvas
• ruler for balcony lines
• fine liner brush
• pale blue-grey acrylic for distant buildings

Palette: Dusk Blue,Warm Window Gold,Deep Forest,Charcoal

Keep the balcony tree a touch smaller and more compact than an indoor tree would be, since real balcony trees are usually potted and modest in size.

Have some fun with a tree built entirely from stacked books, each one a different color forming the triangle shape. Sketch the overall triangle outline lightly in pencil first, then divide it into rough horizontal bands that get narrower toward the top, like a layered cake.

Paint each “layer” as a small stack of two or three books in a different flat color, giving each book a thin darker line along its spine edge for separation. Keep the color palette within your greens, creams, pinks and golds so it still reads as a Christmas tree rather than a random bookshelf.

If the stack starts looking too chaotic, step back and check the overall silhouette still forms a clean triangle before adding more detail. A few books can tilt slightly for charm, but the outer edge should stay fairly consistent.

Top the stack with a single small ornament or a tiny star for the final touch. A ruler helps keep each book’s edges straight if freehand lines feel wobbly.

You Will Need

• small canvas
• pencil for the initial layout
• ruler
• flat brush for book colors

Palette: Forest Green,Dusty Rose,Warm Cream,Antique Gold

Try adding a tiny bit of gold leaf pen detail along a few spine edges once dry, which gives the book stack a nice festive sparkle without much extra work.

Return to the outdoors with a single tree strung in fairy lights standing alone in a dark forest at night. Paint the whole background first in near-black blues and greens, building up the darkness in two or three thin layers rather than one flat coat, which gives the shadows more depth.

Once that base is fully dry, paint the lit tree slightly lighter than its surroundings so it still reads as part of the forest rather than cut out and pasted on top. Add the fairy lights last as small warm dots scattered through the branches, with the faintest glow painted around each one using a soft dry brush.

If the lights look flat and sticker-like, the glow is usually missing. Dab a touch of warm cream around each dot with an almost-dry brush before it fully sets, which blurs the edge just enough.

Suggest a few bare tree trunks fading into the darkness around it for scale. No tiny brush for the lights? The tip of a cotton bud makes neat small dots too.

You Will Need

• small canvas
• soft dry brush for glow
• fine liner brush or cotton bud
• dark blue-green and warm cream acrylic

Palette: Near Black Green,Midnight Blue,Warm Cream Light,Soft Gold

Try this scene on black-primed canvas if you have one, since it saves a whole layer of darkening the background from scratch.

Bring in something sculptural with a tree painted in a simple ceramic Scandi style, all smooth matte shapes rather than fussy branches. This one is about clean geometry, so sketch the tree as a few stacked triangular tiers rather than loose organic greenery.

Paint it in a flat, muted sage or off-white rather than bright Christmas green, since the Scandi look leans on soft neutral color rather than realism. Keep each tier a clean solid shape with a visible gap between layers, almost like a stylized pine cone stack.

Shading can easily make this look too realistic and ruin the clean ceramic feel. Keep shadow to one soft tone per tier rather than gradual blending, which keeps the stylized, almost sculptural quality intact.

Stand it on a small wooden base or in a plain white pot for a finished tabletop look. If sage green paint is not in your kit, mix green with a little grey and white until it turns soft and muted.

You Will Need

• small canvas
• flat brush for clean shapes
• pencil for the stacked triangle layout
• sage green acrylic

Palette: Sage Green,Warm Off-White,Soft Grey,Natural Wood

Keep every edge on this tree deliberately clean and straight, since the charm of the Scandi style depends on the shapes looking calm and considered.

Soften the mood with a tree strung in pastel baubles, all powdery blues, pinks and mints instead of the usual red and gold. Build the tree in your regular layered greens first, but keep the green itself slightly muted and dusty rather than deep and saturated, so it sits comfortably with the pastel palette to come.

Once dry, dot the baubles on in small circles using the round brush, rotating between two or three pastel colors so no single shade dominates. Space them with a little more gap than usual, since pastel colors read best with room to breathe rather than crowded together.

Pastel baubles can disappear into pastel greenery if there is not enough contrast. Add one tiny white highlight dot to each bauble, which lifts every single one forward off the branch.

Finish with a few thin cream ribbon strands looping loosely through the tree. If your pastels look too chalky straight from the tube, add the smallest touch of white to intensify rather than dull them.

You Will Need

• small canvas
• round brush for baubles
• fine liner brush for ribbon
• pastel pink, blue and mint acrylic

Palette: Muted Sage Green,Pastel Pink,Pastel Blue,Mint

Try grouping two or three baubles of the same pastel color close together in a few spots rather than scattering every color evenly everywhere.

Keep it rustic with a small tree standing in a galvanized bucket on a wooden porch. Paint the porch boards first using a dry brush dragged horizontally, letting streaks of the brush show through for a believable wood grain rather than a flat painted plank.

Once dry, paint the bucket as a simple tapered cylinder in cool grey, adding a band of slightly darker grey near the rim and base to suggest the metal ridges. Stand the tree in it last, keeping the trunk hidden just below the rim of the bucket for a realistic fit.

Metal buckets often end up looking flat without that ridge detail. A couple of thin curved highlight lines in white or pale grey across the bucket’s middle instantly reads as reflective metal.

Tuck a string of lights or a simple bow around the bucket’s rim as a finishing touch. If dry brushing the wood grain feels tricky, a fine-tooth comb dragged through wet brown paint creates a similar streaked effect.

You Will Need

• small canvas
• stiff dry brush for wood grain
• flat brush for the bucket
• cool grey and warm brown acrylic

Palette: Weathered Grey,Warm Porch Brown,Forest Green,Soft White

Add one or two fallen pine needles or a stray pinecone beside the bucket for a small realistic touch that makes the whole scene feel lived in.

Try something unexpected with a Christmas tree standing on a quiet beach in winter, sand and sea instead of snow. Paint the sky and sea first in cool pale blues and greys, keeping the horizon line about a third of the way up the canvas so there is plenty of beach in front.

Once that is dry, paint a strip of pale sandy beige for the sand, then stand the tree directly on it, strung with a simple string of lights for contrast against all that cool color. Keep the tree itself warm in tone against the cool backdrop, which is really what makes this idea feel striking.

Too much detail in the sea can fight with the tree for attention. Keep the water as soft horizontal bands of color rather than individual waves, and let the tree stay the clear focus.

Scatter a few shells or a starfish near the base of the tree for a playful seasonal mashup. A fan brush dragged lightly across the sand gives a nice textured beach surface if you have one.

You Will Need

• small canvas
• fan brush (optional)
• round brush
• cool blue-grey and sandy beige acrylic

Palette: Sea Grey Blue,Sandy Beige,Forest Green,Warm Gold

Keep the whole painting’s color temperature mostly cool except for the tree itself, which makes the warm green and gold pop far more than they would in a snowy scene.

Frame the tree in glass with a small greenhouse holding a Christmas tree glowing inside. Paint the greenhouse structure first as a simple geometric shape, a few straight lines for the frame and panes, using a ruler if straight lines feel difficult freehand.

Leave the glass panes mostly transparent by painting the tree and warm interior light first, then glazing a very thin, slightly streaky layer of pale blue-white over the top once fully dry to suggest glass without hiding the tree underneath. Keep the frame lines dark and crisp so the structure reads clearly against the glow.

Overworking the glass glaze is the main risk, since too many layers will hide the tree completely. One thin, slightly uneven pass is enough: let some areas stay clearer than others, the way real glass catches light unevenly.

Finish with a few small plants or frosted grass around the greenhouse base. If a liquid glaze medium is not available, simply thin white paint heavily with water for a similar soft veil effect.

You Will Need

• small canvas
• ruler for the frame lines
• fine liner brush for structure
• pale blue-white glaze or heavily thinned white acrylic

Palette: Deep Forest,Warm Gold Light,Pale Glass Blue,Charcoal Frame

Try adding a faint reflection of the tree’s glow on the ground just outside the greenhouse, which makes the structure feel more grounded and real.

Add a storybook touch with a tree hung with little nutcracker ornaments among its branches. Build the tree in the usual layered greens first, then before adding any nutcrackers, decide roughly where two or three will sit so they are spaced apart rather than clustered on one side.

Paint each nutcracker as a simple tall rectangle for the body topped with a smaller rectangle hat, adding a thin black line for the mouth and two small dots for eyes. Keep the proportions tall and narrow, since a nutcracker’s charm comes from that stiff upright soldier shape.

Faces are the trickiest part and easy to overdo. A single thin black line for the mustache and two tiny dots for eyes is plenty; resist adding more detail or the face can turn muddy at this small size.

Finish each one with a touch of gold trim along the hat and jacket. If a tiny brush is not available for the facial details, a fine black paint pen gives cleaner, steadier lines.

You Will Need

• small canvas
• fine black paint pen or liner brush
• round brush for the body shapes
• gold acrylic for trim

Palette: Forest Green,Soldier Red,Cream White,Antique Gold

Vary the hat and jacket colors slightly between each nutcracker so they read as a little collection rather than identical copies.

Keep the shapes simple with a tree trimmed entirely in folded paper stars rather than round baubles. Paint the tree first, then once dry, lightly sketch small five-pointed star outlines scattered through the branches in pencil before any paint touches them.

Fill each star in a flat warm cream or soft gold, keeping the points a little uneven and slightly rounded rather than perfectly sharp, since folded paper stars are never geometrically precise. Add one thin fold line through the center of each star with a slightly darker shade to suggest the paper crease.

Stars with points that are too sharp and even can look stamped rather than handmade. Let a few points vary in length and angle across the tree for a warmer, more crafted feel.

Space the stars generously rather than crowding them, letting plenty of green show between each one. A fine pencil works better than a brush for the initial star outlines if your hand needs steadying first.

You Will Need

• small canvas
• pencil for star outlines
• fine liner brush
• cream and gold acrylic

Palette: Forest Green,Warm Cream,Soft Gold,Pale Grey Fold Line

Try cutting a real folded paper star from scrap paper first and keeping it beside the canvas as a quick visual reference for the uneven points.

Frame everything in a sphere with a tiny Christmas tree sealed inside a snow globe. Paint the tree and its little base first, small and centered, keeping detail minimal since the glass dome will soften everything slightly anyway.

Once the tree is dry, paint a large circle around it in pale, slightly streaky white and blue to suggest curved glass, leaving the bottom edge a touch darker where the glass meets the base. Add a simple round or hexagonal base beneath the globe in a solid color, giving the whole object a sense of weight.

Glass circles often look flat without a highlight. Add one soft curved streak of white near the top edge of the globe to suggest the glass catching light, and keep it a single confident stroke rather than overworking it.

Finish with small scattered white dots for the suspended snow inside, denser near the bottom of the globe. A round lid, jar or coin works well as a tracing guide if drawing a freehand circle feels tricky.

You Will Need

• small canvas
• round object to trace for the globe outline
• fine liner brush
• pale blue-white acrylic

Palette: Forest Green,Pale Glass Blue,Snow White,Deep Base Brown

Keep the tree inside noticeably smaller than the globe itself, since too snug a fit makes the scale read wrong at a glance.

Bring in some mischief with a tree hung with candy canes while a curious cat investigates nearby. Paint the tree first and let it dry, then hook a few candy canes onto the branches using simple curved red and white striped lines, a round brush loaded with one color and wiped partially clean for the other.

Place the cat beside or slightly under the tree, drawn as a simple rounded body shape with pointed ears and a long curved tail, one paw lifted as if reaching toward a low-hanging candy cane. Keep its pose a little playful rather than perfectly still, which tells the small story of the scene.

Striped candy canes can blur into a muddy pink mess if the red and white are blended too much. Keep the stripes as distinct separate strokes with a clean brush for each color rather than mixing them on the canvas.

Finish with a small highlight on the cat’s fur where the tree lights catch it. Any small round brush works for the cat, but a liner brush gives the cleanest whiskers if you want to add a couple.

You Will Need

• small canvas
• round brush for stripes
• fine liner brush for whiskers
• red and white acrylic

Palette: Candy Red,Soft White,Forest Green,Tabby Grey

Try giving the cat a single pastel or tartan collar bow to tie this scene into the tree’s own color palette.

Pare everything back with a minimalist tree made of bare branches strung simply with lights, no greenery at all. Sketch a loose triangular arrangement of thin branching lines in pencil first, letting them cross and fork naturally rather than forming a solid filled shape.

Paint the branches with a fine liner brush in warm brown or soft black, varying the line thickness so branches look thinner toward their tips. Keep plenty of background showing through between the branches, since the empty space is part of the design here, not something to fill in.

It is tempting to add more branches than the composition needs, which crowds out the minimal feel this idea relies on. Stop earlier than feels natural and step back to check the shape still reads clearly as a tree.

Finish with small warm dots of light scattered along a few branch tips, fewer than you would use on a full green tree. If your lines wobble with a brush, a fine paint pen gives steadier, more controlled branches.

You Will Need

• small canvas
• fine liner brush or paint pen
• pencil for the initial layout
• warm brown or black acrylic

Palette: Warm Walnut Brown,Soft Black,Pale Background,Warm Gold Light

Leave this one with lots of plain background around the branches, since the minimal look depends on open space as much as the lines themselves.

Keep the warmth going with a small decorated tree standing inside a café window, glimpsed from the street. Paint the window frame first as a simple rectangle with one or two dividing bars, using a ruler for clean straight lines if your hand needs the support.

Inside the frame, paint a soft warm interior glow in cream and gold before adding the tree, so the tree sits believably lit from within rather than looking pasted onto a cold background. Suggest a string of café lights or a hanging pendant lamp nearby for extra atmosphere.

Reflections on glass are the trickiest part and easy to overdo. One or two soft diagonal streaks of pale white across the window pane is enough; too many and the glass reads as a mess rather than a window.

Finish with a hint of steam rising from a coffee cup on a visible windowsill or table edge. If the interior glow looks patchy, blend it with a slightly damp brush while it is still wet.

You Will Need

• small canvas
• ruler for the window frame
• round brush for the glow
• warm cream and gold acrylic

Palette: Warm Café Gold,Forest Green,Charcoal Frame,Soft Glass White

Add a small chalkboard sign or hanging plant just visible at the window’s edge for a cozy detail that fills the scene without much extra effort.

Add some whimsy with a small tree strapped into the basket of a bicycle parked on a snowy street. Paint the bicycle first in simple curved lines, keeping the wheels as two clean circles traced from a coin or cap if freehand circles feel wobbly.

Once the bike frame is dry, paint the basket at the front as a simple woven texture of short crisscrossing lines in warm brown, then nestle the small tree into it, letting a few branches spill naturally over the basket’s edge. Keep the tree modest in size, since it needs to look light enough for a bike to carry.

Bicycle wheels can easily look lopsided if painted freehand without a guide. Tracing both wheels from the same round object keeps them matching and saves a lot of frustration.

Finish with a dusting of snow settled along the handlebars and basket rim. A thin liner brush works well for the spokes if you want that extra detail once the wheel outlines are dry.

You Will Need

• small canvas
• round object to trace wheels
• fine liner brush for spokes and basket weave
• warm brown and green acrylic

Palette: Rust Red Bike,Warm Basket Brown,Forest Green,Snow White

Pick an unexpected bike color like dusty pink or mustard instead of the obvious red, which keeps the whole painting feeling more modern.

Layer in some pattern with a tree wrapped in a tartan ribbon and tartan bows throughout. Build the tree in deep green first, then plan where two or three ribbon bows will sit before painting any plaid, so the pattern has clear places to land rather than spreading everywhere at once.

Paint each bow’s base shape first in your main tartan color, usually a deep red or green, then add the plaid lines on top once dry: a few evenly spaced vertical and horizontal lines in a contrasting color, crossing to form the simple grid of a tartan check. Keep the checks loose rather than perfectly ruled for a hand-painted feel.

Overcomplicating the plaid pattern is the easiest trap, since real tartan has many thin crossing lines that are hard to fit at small scale. Three or four lines in each direction is enough to read clearly as tartan from normal viewing distance.

Let a loose ribbon trail from one or two bows down through the branches. A fine liner brush or a paint pen keeps the crossing plaid lines crisp and even.

You Will Need

• small canvas
• fine liner brush or paint pen
• round brush for bow shapes
• red, green and cream acrylic

Palette: Tartan Red,Forest Green,Warm Cream,Deep Navy Line

Pick just one tartan colorway for the whole tree, red and green or navy and red, rather than mixing several, which keeps the pattern feeling put together.

Bring the scene somewhere cozier with a small tree standing in a bedroom corner under a soft canopy of hanging lights. Paint the wall and a hint of a bed or soft furnishings first, keeping the room fairly simple and uncluttered so the tree stays the clear focus.

Above the tree, suggest a loose string or canopy of lights strung across the corner, painted as a few soft curved lines with small warm dots along their length, more scattered toward the top of the canvas and sparser lower down. Paint the tree itself next, modest in height to suit a bedroom corner rather than a grand living room scale.

Too many lights everywhere flattens the cozy effect this idea relies on. Concentrate the brightest cluster near the top of the canopy and let the light naturally fall off as it spreads downward.

Finish with one warm glow cast softly onto the nearby wall. A small stippling brush or sponge dabbed lightly gives a nice soft glow around each light if a plain dot feels too hard-edged.

You Will Need

• small canvas
• stippling brush or sponge
• fine liner brush for the light strings
• warm gold acrylic

Palette: Soft Blush Wall,Forest Green,Warm Gold Light,Cream Bedding

Keep the whole room palette soft and warm, since this idea works best as a cozy quiet corner rather than a busy decorated room.

Have some fun with a tree strung in tiny disco ball ornaments instead of regular baubles. Build the tree in deep green first, then once dry, paint each disco ball as a small circle in mid-grey, since a flat silver base actually reads more convincingly metallic than pure white.

While that base is still slightly workable, dab tiny dots of white, pale blue and soft pink randomly across each sphere’s surface to suggest the mirrored facets catching different colored light. Keep the dot placement irregular from one ball to the next so each one feels like it is catching light from a slightly different angle.

If the ornaments end up looking like plain polka dot spheres, add one or two sharper white highlight streaks across the top of each, which instantly reads as reflected shine rather than pattern.

Finish with a faint colored glow around one or two of the balls for extra sparkle. A small stiff brush stippled lightly gives the best mottled disco texture if a round brush feels too smooth.

You Will Need

• small canvas
• small stiff brush for stippling
• round brush for the sphere base
• grey, white, pale blue and pink acrylic

Palette: Mirror Grey,Soft Pink Facet,Pale Blue Facet,Forest Green

Try lighting just one or two disco balls brighter than the rest, since a single standout highlight sells the sparkle better than making every ornament equally bright.

Go soft and wintry with a white flocked tree brightened only with pink accents. Base the whole tree in off-white first, using a stiff bristle brush stippled rather than stroked, which builds up the bumpy, snow-dusted texture real flocked trees have.

Once that textured white base is dry, add a few touches of pale grey in the deepest crevices between branches to give the flocking some dimension, since pure flat white can look like a blank shape rather than a textured tree. Keep this shading minimal and soft rather than dark and defined.

Add the pink accents last, just a handful of small baubles or a bow or two in dusty rose, placed with clear gaps between them so they stay accents rather than taking over the tree.

If the stippled texture looks too uniform, vary the pressure and angle of the brush across different areas for a more natural, drifted snow look. A dense natural bristle brush gives the best flocked texture if your usual brush feels too soft for this.

You Will Need

• small canvas
• stiff bristle brush for stippling
• round brush for pink accents
• off-white and dusty rose acrylic

Palette: Flocked White,Pale Grey Shadow,Dusty Rose,Soft Gold

Keep the background a soft mid-tone rather than pure white, since a white tree needs contrast behind it to read clearly on the canvas.

Close the list with some action: a girl standing on a small ladder decorating the very top of the tree. Work out the proportions before painting by comparing the ladder’s height against the tree, since the ladder should reach roughly two-thirds up the tree for the pose to make visual sense.

Paint the tree first, leaving its top section a little sparse and undecorated since that is what she is reaching to finish. Add the ladder next as a few simple straight lines, then paint the girl as a simplified figure, one arm raised toward the treetop holding a small star or bauble.

Figures reaching upward often end up with an oddly bent or too-short arm. Sketch the pose lightly in pencil first and check the raised arm actually reaches the point she is decorating before committing any paint.

Finish with a small cluster of finished ornaments already hung on the lower branches for contrast with the bare top. If painting a full figure feels daunting, keep her as a simple silhouette rather than attempting facial detail.

You Will Need

• small canvas
• pencil for the figure sketch
• fine liner brush for the ladder
• round brush for the figure

Palette: Forest Green,Warm Gold Star,Soft Black Silhouette,Warm Cream

Leave the very top of the tree, right where her hand reaches, as the brightest or most detailed spot, since that draws the eye exactly where the story is happening.

Frequently Asked Questions

What paint works best for a christmas tree painting on a small canvas?

Acrylic paint works best, since it dries fast and layers easily on a small canvas without needing long waits between sessions. Keep it slightly thick for texture, and thin it only lightly with water when you need a soft glaze or glow.

How do you make the green on a christmas tree painting look less flat?

Mix your own green from blue and yellow rather than using it straight from the tube, then vary it slightly across the tree. Add a touch more yellow near the lights and more blue in the shadowed inner branches for natural depth.

Do I need special brushes for a christmas tree painting?

No special brushes are required, just a stiff bristle brush for textured greenery and a small round or liner brush for lights and detail. A fan brush or old toothbrush is a nice extra for texture but is never essential to finish the piece.

How small can a christmas tree painting be and still look finished?

An eight by ten inch canvas is plenty, and even a five by seven works well for simpler ideas like the minimalist branch tree or the bow-only tree. Smaller canvases also finish faster, which suits a single sitting.

What is the easiest christmas tree painting idea for a first attempt?

The pink tinsel tree or the tree decorated only with bows are the simplest starting points, since both rely on one soft shape and minimal detail. They build confidence in brush control before tackling a scene with figures or buildings.
