This set of botanical watercolor templates gives you thirteen plants and leaves, each one already drawn for you in clean outline form. No sketching, no guessing where a leaf curves: just print the shape, get it onto good paper and start mixing paint.
Print the outline at the size you want, then transfer it to your watercolor paper by taping both sheets to a sunny window or a light pad, or by sliding a sheet of graphite transfer paper between them and tracing the lines. Once the outline is on your paper, prop the finished example beside you and paint, following the colour notes for each one.

Fern Frond
Start with a pale yellow-green wash over the whole frond and let it dry just slightly before dropping in a deeper sap green along the central stem and the base of each leaflet, letting the two greens blend softly where they meet. Keep the brush strokes small and the same direction on every leaflet so the frond reads as one calm rhythm rather than scattered marks. Once dry, add a thin line of darker green down the very centre of the stem to finish it.

Monstera Leaf
Wet the whole leaf shape first, then drop a strong green into the outer edges and a lighter yellow-green near the central vein, letting the colours bleed into each other while the paper is still damp. Leave the small oval holes and the thin vein lines untouched white paper, since that gap is what makes the leaf look finished rather than flat. Once everything is dry, paint the stem in one confident stroke of darker green.

If the holes feel fiddly to leave white, paint around them loosely first and tidy the edge with a fine brush once the wash has dried.
Eucalyptus Branch
Mix a grey-green from sap green and a touch of Payne’s grey, and wash it over every leaf, then while still wet, tap a little dusty blue into a few of the leaves for variation. Paint the thin stem last in a warm brown, connecting each leaf pair with a single steady line. This mix of cool and warm tones against each other is what gives eucalyptus its familiar, slightly silver look.

Olive Branch
Paint the leaves in a dry, grey-toned green using the side of the brush so some white paper shows through for texture, which suits the dusty look of real olive foliage. Let each leaf dry before adding its neighbour so colours stay separate and crisp rather than merging into one green mass. Paint the olives in a deep green-black with a tiny highlight left white, and finish the branch in warm brown.

Ginkgo Leaf
Wet the fan shape and drop a golden yellow across the top half, then bring a touch of green up from the base so the two colours blend in the middle with no hard line. The fine radiating veins can stay as thin white lines if you paint carefully around them, or you can skip them entirely for a bolder flat look. A short, slightly curved stem in brown finishes the shape nicely.

Lemon Branch With One Fruit
Paint the lemon first in a flat wash of bright yellow, adding a touch of orange near the base while still damp so it looks round rather than flat. Leave a small white highlight untouched to suggest the shine of the peel. Paint the leaves in a deep glossy green with a lighter streak down the centre of each, and finish with the thin brown branch connecting lemon and leaves together.

Sprig of Rosemary
Because the leaves are drawn large here rather than tiny, you can paint each needle with one short confident stroke instead of fiddly dabs. Use a grey-green for most of the leaves and a slightly darker green near the stem to add depth without extra detail. Paint the woody stem in brown last, letting it show faintly through gaps between the leaves for a natural, unfussy finish.

Fig Leaf
Wash the whole leaf in a warm medium green, then while it is still damp, deepen the colour along the outer edge of each lobe so the centre stays lighter and the leaf reads as gently curved. The thick central vein and the few branching veins can be left as thin white lines by painting carefully around them with a small brush. A short sturdy stem in brown anchors the whole leaf.

Palm Frond
Paint each long leaflet with one smooth stroke from the central stem outward, using a bright warm green and letting a touch of yellow bleed in near the base of the frond for a sunlit look. Keep the strokes loose and slightly varied in pressure so the frond feels relaxed rather than stiff. The central stem can be painted in a slightly darker green to hold the whole shape together.
Palette: Sap Green,Lemon Yellow,Hooker’s Green
If you enjoy painting sunlit greenery like this, the easy beach watercolor ideas make a nice companion set with the same warm light.
Pine Branch With Berries
Paint the needle clusters in a deep cool green, working in small fan-shaped strokes from a central point rather than one flat wash, which gives the branch its bristly texture without any fine detail work. Once dry, paint the berries in a bright red with a tiny white highlight left on each one. The woody stem in brown ties the clusters together into one believable branch.

Lily of the Valley Stem
Since the stem is drawn large here, each bell flower can be painted as its own tiny wash of the palest green-white, with a shadow of soft grey tucked under the curve of each bell to give it roundness. Leave most of each flower bright white paper, since that is what makes them glow. The single broad leaf at the base takes a confident wash of rich green, grounding the delicate flowers above it.
Palette: Sap Green,Payne’s Grey,Titanium White
A fine round brush helps keep the small bell shapes crisp; load it lightly so the pale wash does not flood past the thin outline.
Basil Sprig
Wash each leaf in a fresh, slightly yellow-toned green, keeping the colour lighter near the centre vein and a touch deeper at the edges for gentle shape. Let one leaf dry fully before painting the one behind it so the overlapping edges stay clean and separate. A short pale green stem connects the leaves, finished with a tiny hint of purple-brown at the very base where basil stems often darken.

This fresh, simple palette pairs well with other kitchen-inspired pieces in the easy watercolor food ideas collection.
Strawberry Plant With One Berry
Paint the strawberry first in a bright red wash, leaving small white dots unpainted or added later in white gel pen for the seeds, and deepen the red slightly near the top where it meets the leafy cap. The leaves take a fresh green wash with a slightly deeper tone along their toothed edges, and the small white flower stays mostly untouched paper with just a soft yellow centre. This mix of red, green and one pale flower gives the whole plant a tidy, finished look.

What to Do Next
Pick one template, print it today and get the outline onto your paper before you do anything else: once it is traced, the painting itself only takes an afternoon.
Frequently Asked Questions
What size should I print the outline templates?
Print each outline at the size you want your final painting to be, since watercolor paper comes in many sizes. A4 or standard letter size suits most of these botanical subjects comfortably, with room for margin around the shape.
What paper works best for these botanical watercolor templates?
Cold press watercolor paper around 300gsm handles washes and blending without buckling or pilling. Smoother paper works too if you prefer tighter detail, but it dries faster and gives less room to blend colours softly.
How do I transfer the outline onto watercolor paper?
Tape the printed outline and your watercolor paper together over a sunny window or light pad and trace the lines through with a pencil. Graphite transfer paper slipped between the two sheets works just as well without needing light behind it.
Can I use coloured pencils or markers instead of watercolor paint?
Yes, every outline works equally well with coloured pencils or alcohol markers. Follow the same colour placement described for each template, building up pressure gradually with pencils rather than trying to match a wet paint blend in one layer.
What if I am new to painting leaves and branches?
Start with a simpler shape like the fig leaf or basil sprig before trying the more layered pine branch or lily of the valley stem. Keep washes loose and let one area dry before adding the next so colours stay clean.
