33 Snow Globe Drawing Ideas of Tiny Cabins, Lighthouses, Cafes and Skaters Under Glass

22

A snow globe drawing gives you a whole tiny world without asking for a whole afternoon: one round glass, one small scene inside it, and falling snow to tie it all together. That little circle does a lot of work for you, it tells your eye exactly where to look and lets the rest of the page stay quiet and white.

Below are 33 scenes to paint inside that glass, from a sleepy cabin with smoke curling up to a tram climbing a snowy hill. Pick whichever one makes you want to reach for a brush right now, loose watercolor with a few fine ink lines is forgiving, fast, and finished in one sitting.

Start a snow globe drawing with something you already know how to draw well: a small log cabin. Pencil a faint circle first, just a guide, then draw the cabin low inside it, a simple rectangle with a steep triangle roof and one small window glowing cream or soft yellow.

Paint the roof in a wash of icy blue with a touch of lilac in the shadow side, then drop in a sage green pine beside the door while the paper is still a little damp so the edges blur softly. Add the chimney last with a fine liner, then lift a thin curl of grey smoke with a nearly dry brush so it reads as soft and rising, not solid.

If the smoke comes out too heavy, blot it with a tissue while wet, it dries back into a believable wisp. Dot falling snow across the glass with a white gel pen once everything else is dry, and keep the outer circle line loose rather than ruler-straight, it suits the whimsical feel better.

Keep your first cabin small and square, it is the easiest shape to balance before you move to anything more textured.

You Will Need

• white gel pen

Move from a square cabin to something taller and narrower: a lighthouse rising out of a small rocky island. Measure its height against its width before you commit to ink, a lighthouse that reads as believable is usually about five or six times taller than it is wide, with a slightly wider base that tapers as it climbs.

Pencil the tower first, then the lantern room at the top as a small box with a pointed cap, and the rocks beneath as rounded, overlapping shapes rather than one smooth mound. Paint the rocks in sage green and grey-lilac, the tower in cream with cherry red bands, and let the sea around the base stay the lightest icy blue wash in the whole globe.

If the red bands bleed into the cream, work on paper that has dried completely between the two colours, or use a dry brush for the red stripe instead of a wet one. Keep the lantern’s light as a small warm dot with a fine ink ring around it, it is the detail that makes the whole scene feel lit from within.

Try adding a gull or two as tiny grey V shapes above the lighthouse, they give the scene scale and a bit of movement without any extra colour.

From stone and sea, shift to something cozier: a little Parisian cafe with two chairs set outside under its awning. Draw the building front as a simple rectangle with one large window, then add the awning as a scalloped stripe in cherry red and cream, it is the detail that says cafe instantly.

Paint the walls in a warm cream wash, then add the two small bistro chairs in thin ink lines once the wash is dry, keeping them loose and slightly wobbly rather than perfectly even, that looseness reads as charming rather than wrong. A tiny round table between them and a string of tiny round lights along the awning finish the scene.

If the awning stripes blur together, paint them with a dry-ish brush in short strokes instead of one long wet one, and let the first stripe dry before adding its neighbour. For a quicker version, skip the lights and just paint the awning, chairs and one warm window, it still reads clearly as a cafe.

Figures move the eye more than buildings do, so this globe holds two skaters twirling on a frozen pond. Light matters here: decide where it comes from before you paint, a low winter sun off to one side throws long violet-blue shadows across the ice and lets you skip painting the ice itself in much detail.

Pencil the two figures first as simple stick shapes bent into a turning pose, one arm up and one knee bent reads as mid-spin even in a tiny drawing. Paint their coats in cherry red and icy blue, keep faces as a few soft dashes at most, then wash the pond in pale lilac-grey with a dry brush skimmed sideways for the streaky ice texture.

If the figures end up stiff, loosen the pose by tilting the whole body a few degrees off vertical, that small tilt alone makes it feel like movement rather than standing still. A thin circle of pine trees in sage green around the pond’s edge closes the scene nicely.

After two moving figures, settle the page down with something sleeping: a brown bear curled under a snowy pine. Build the bear from two overlapping ovals, one for the body and a smaller one for the head tucked against it, that simple pairing is the whole trick to a convincing curled-up animal at this size.

Wash the bear’s fur in warm cream-brown with a touch of sage green in the shadow underneath, then once that layer is dry, dry-brush a few short upward strokes along the back for texture instead of painting individual hairs. The pine above gets heavy white gouache or gel pen snow sitting on its branches, loaded on thick so it sits above the green rather than blending into it.

If the bear’s shape reads as a blob instead of an animal, add one small dark ear shape and a short line for the nose in fine ink, that is usually enough to fix it. No brown paint on hand works fine too, mix a little cherry red into sage green for a warm earthy substitute.

You Will Need

• white gouache or gel pen for snow texture

Palette: Burnt Sienna,Sage Green,Cream,Payne’s Grey

Swap the sleeping bear for a standing one: a shaggy highland cow beside a red barn. Compare sizes before you ink anything, the cow should sit no taller than the barn door, that single comparison keeps the whole scene in proportion rather than letting the animal dwarf the building or disappear beside it.

Paint the barn in cherry red with a cream trim around the door, then once dry, build the cow from a rounded body shape with short legs and a fringe of shaggy fur along its face done in quick dry-brush strokes rather than a smooth outline. Its horns get two curved ink lines last, keep them small and slightly asymmetrical for a friendlier look.

If the cow’s fur looks too neat, scratch a few lines back out of the wet paint with the wrong end of your brush, it breaks up the edge nicely. A light dusting of sage green grass poking through the snow near its feet finishes the ground.

Palette: Cherry Red,Cream,Burnt Sienna,Sage Green

Return to architecture with a shape that reads instantly: the A-frame cabin, basically one tall triangle with a small porch tucked under its lowest edge. Draw the triangle first and keep its angle steep, a shallow A-frame looks like a tent rather than a cabin, so aim for something closer to a slim isosceles shape.

Paint the roof and walls as one continuous icy blue-grey wash so the building reads as a single clean silhouette, then add the porch, door and window in cream once that first wash is fully dry. The skis leaning against the porch post are two thin parallel ink lines with small curved tips, easy to add last with a steady hand.

If the triangle looks lopsided, fold your sketch paper in half first to find true center before transferring it, that trick works for any symmetrical building. For a faster version, skip the skis and the porch detail and just paint the glowing triangle shape with one window, it still reads clearly as a mountain cabin.

Palette: Icy Blue,Cream,Payne’s Grey,Sage Green

Bring in a little narrative with a girl walking her dog down a snowy lane, two small figures in motion rather than one still one. Sketch her first as a simple cone-shaped coat with a round head and mitten hands, then the dog as a low oval body on four thin legs, trotting a half step ahead of her on its leash.

Paint her coat in cherry red against the pale lane, keep the dog in warm cream or sienna so the two colours sit comfortably beside each other, and leave the lane itself as bare white paper with just a faint lilac shadow stroke beneath their feet. That shadow alone is often what makes two flat shapes look like they are standing on something.

If the leash line looks stiff, draw it with a slight sag in the middle rather than taut and straight, it reads as more natural and gentle. This scene pairs nicely with the loose, story-driven style used across puppy drawing ideas if you want more animal and figure pairings to practice next.

Palette: Cherry Red,Cream,Soft Lilac,Burnt Sienna

Shift the architecture entirely with a small Japanese temple and its stone lantern standing beside the path. The roofline is the whole character here, draw it with a gentle upward curve at each corner rather than a straight flat edge, that single curve is what separates this roof from every cabin you have drawn so far.

Paint the roof in cherry red or deep sage, the walls in cream, and let the stone lantern sit in cool grey-lilac just in front of the entrance, small and squat with a little peaked cap of its own. A few bare branches in thin ink beside the temple, maybe one with a scatter of soft pink dots for early blossom, add quiet detail without crowding the scene.

If the curved roofline keeps flattening out under your brush, pencil it first and trace over the pencil line slowly with a fine liner before you paint, painting it freehand from scratch is much harder to control. Keep the whole building smaller than the globe’s center so there is room for falling snow all around it.

Palette: Cherry Red,Cream,Soft Lilac,Sage Green

Keep the story going with a small post office and its red mail van parked out front. Draw the van first as two simple rectangles, a short hood and a boxier back, with round wheels tucked just under the body, vehicles at this scale work best when you simplify rather than detail every panel.

Paint it in cherry red with cream for the windows left as unpainted paper, then build the post office behind it in pale icy blue with a cream sign above the door, small enough that one word or a simple symbol reads clearly even at a glance. A string of footprints leading to the door, just small dark dashes, gives the scene a sense of someone just inside.

If the van’s wheels disappear into the snow, give them a thin ink outline even where the paint is pale, it keeps the shape readable. Swap the red van for a cream or sage one if you want the building to carry the only strong colour in the globe.

Palette: Cherry Red,Icy Blue,Cream,Payne’s Grey

Climb up onto a roof for this one: a cat sitting quietly on a snowy rooftop, its tail curled around its paws. A sitting cat is really a simple pear shape with a round head set on top, no neck drawn at all, that is the quickest way to get the pose right without fighting anatomy.

Paint the body in warm cream or soft grey, keep the roof’s snow thick and bright white against it using gouache or a white gel pen, and let a chimney or two in cherry red peek up behind the cat for a bit of colour contrast. Two small triangle ears and a short tail curl finish the shape in fine ink.

If the cat ends up looking more like a loaf than a cat, add a slight dip where the head meets the shoulders and taper the tail to a thin point, both small changes read as distinctly feline. The loose, whimsical cat shapes in cozy drawing ideas use a similar simplified approach if you want more practice with this pose.

You Will Need

• white gel pen or gouache for roof snow

Palette: Cream,Payne’s Grey,Cherry Red,Icy Blue

Lift the whole scene off the ground with a hot air balloon drifting above snowy hills. Think about eye level before you draw, since you are looking up at the balloon from below the hills, its basket should be the smallest shape in the scene and the hills beneath it should curve away rather than sit flat.

Paint the balloon’s panels in alternating cherry red and cream, left slightly uneven rather than perfectly striped, then the hills in soft layered washes of sage green and icy blue, lightest in the distance and a touch deeper near the bottom of the globe. The basket is just a small cream rectangle with thin rope lines connecting it to the balloon.

If the balloon looks flat, add one curved shadow stroke down its right or left side in Payne’s grey while the paint is still a little damp, that single curve gives it volume instantly. For a faster version, skip the hills entirely and let the balloon float against plain white with just a scatter of falling snow.

Palette: Cherry Red,Cream,Sage Green,Icy Blue

Bring a bit of playful fantasy in with a single carousel horse standing in the snow, pole and all. Build it from a simple arched neck and a rounded body, legs frozen mid-prance, one front leg lifted higher than the others gives it that carousel liveliness even standing still.

Paint the horse in cream with cherry red and soft lilac details along its saddle and mane, kept loose and a little decorative rather than realistic, this is the one subject on this list that welcomes a bit of pattern. The pole running through its back is a thin vertical ink line with a small gold-toned dot at the top finial.

If the prancing leg looks awkward, bend it at the knee rather than keeping it straight, a bent leg reads as mid-motion far more convincingly. Try this one after a few simpler animals on the list, the pose takes a little more patience to get right than a sleeping or sitting one.

Palette: Cream,Cherry Red,Soft Lilac,Payne’s Grey

Quiet the page again after the carousel horse’s energy with a swan gliding on a tiny frozen lake. The whole shape rests on one elegant curve, draw the neck as a single smooth S before adding anything else, a stiff or straight neck is the fastest way to lose the swan’s grace.

Leave the swan itself mostly as untouched white paper, just a thin Payne’s grey ink line for its outline and a small cherry red-orange dot of a beak, then paint the water around it in pale icy blue with soft lilac reflections trailing behind. That contrast between a nearly blank swan and a washed-in lake is what makes it glow against the page.

If the reflection looks too solid, drag your brush downward from the swan’s base in one loose stroke and let it fade rather than painting a mirrored copy, loose always reads better than exact here. A few bare reeds in sage green at the lake’s edge finish the scene without adding much work.

Palette: Icy Blue,Soft Lilac,Payne’s Grey,Sage Green

Trade a single building for a whole little row: a line of colorful Scandinavian houses standing shoulder to shoulder. Vary their heights and roof angles slightly as you sketch, three identical houses in a row looks stiff, but three different silhouettes side by side reads as a real street instantly.

Paint each house a different colour from the palette, cherry red, sage green and cream, with simple white trim around the windows and doors, and let a little snow sit along each roofline in thick white gouache once the colour washes have dried. Keep doors and windows as plain rectangles, this subject works best as blocks of colour rather than fine detail.

If the houses start blending together, outline each one in a fine ink line once the paint is dry, that single clean edge separates them cleanly even where the colours are close in tone. Try only three houses for a first attempt and build up to five or six once the spacing feels comfortable.

You Will Need

• white gouache for roof snow

Palette: Cherry Red,Sage Green,Cream,Icy Blue

Cool the colour palette down with something warm inside it: a little greenhouse glowing with green plants against the snow outside. Draw the glass panes as a simple grid of thin pencil lines over the whole structure first, that grid is what reads as glass, without it the shape just looks like a plain shed.

Paint the inside glow in layered sage green and a touch of cream for warmth, letting the colour bleed softly past the pencil grid lines in places, since greenhouse glass is never perfectly crisp. Once dry, trace a few of the grid lines back in with fine ink, not all of them, just enough to suggest the structure without covering the plants inside.

If the inside colour looks too flat, drop in one or two deeper green leaf shapes once the first wash has dried, that layering gives it depth fast. This pairs nicely with the quiet indoor-outdoor mood found in bonsai tree drawing ideas if you enjoy painting small plants in containers.

Palette: Sage Green,Cream,Icy Blue,Payne’s Grey

Add a sense of motion again with a small red tram climbing a snowy hill on its track. Draw the hill first as one confident diagonal line across the globe, then set the tram on top of it at the same angle, nothing breaks this subject faster than a tram that sits level while the hill beneath it climbs.

Paint the tram’s body in cherry red with cream windows left unpainted, then wash the hill in icy blue-grey, darker where it falls into shadow on the downhill side. The track itself is just two thin parallel ink lines following the hill’s angle, with small evenly spaced dashes between them for the ties.

If the tram looks like it is floating above the hill rather than on it, add a thin shadow line directly beneath its wheels in Payne’s grey, that single line anchors it to the slope. For a quicker version, skip the track ties and just suggest the rails with two clean lines, it still reads clearly as a tram on a hill.

Palette: Cherry Red,Cream,Icy Blue,Payne’s Grey

Lift the viewpoint higher still with a mountain gondola cabin suspended above a row of pines. Since you are looking at the gondola from below and slightly to one side, draw its cable running diagonally across the whole globe rather than straight, that single diagonal does most of the work of suggesting height and distance.

Paint the cabin in cream with a cherry red roof, hanging from a thin Payne’s grey ink line for the cable, then build the pines beneath it in layered sage green, darker triangles overlapping lighter ones so they read as a slope receding into the distance. Keep the cabin small against the pines, scale is what sells the sense of height here.

If the cable line wobbles, draw it last with a ruler laid lightly against the page, just for that one straight stroke, then paint everything else freehand. A single distant mountain peak in pale lilac behind the pines adds depth without much extra work.

Palette: Cream,Cherry Red,Sage Green,Soft Lilac

Slow the pace down again with a snowman sitting quietly on a park bench, a small book open in his stick hands. Build him from three simple stacked circles as always, but round the bottom one slightly flatter where it meets the bench, a snowman who is actually sitting needs that flattened base or he reads as standing instead.

Paint the bench in warm sienna or cream wood tones first, then the snowman in bright white gouache or left as bare paper with just shadow strokes in soft lilac to shape him. His scarf, if you want a dot of colour, works well in cherry red, kept small and simple rather than wrapped elaborately.

If the sitting pose looks stiff, angle his head very slightly downward toward the book rather than straight ahead, that small tilt reads instantly as someone absorbed in reading. The quick ten minute version skips the bench entirely and just has him seated on a snowy stump instead, still a full little scene.

You Will Need

• white gouache optional

Palette: Cream,Burnt Sienna,Soft Lilac,Cherry Red

Bring in a forest animal next: a reindeer standing quietly among slender birch trees. Compare the reindeer’s leg length to its body before you ink the final lines, legs on a reindeer run surprisingly long and thin, and getting that ratio right is most of what makes the animal look correct rather than stocky.

Paint the birch trunks first as simple vertical strokes in pale cream left mostly unpainted, with short horizontal dashes of Payne’s grey for the bark markings, then add the reindeer in warm sienna against them, its antlers a few thin branching ink lines kept open and airy rather than dense. Let the trees stay taller than the reindeer so the forest feels like it surrounds the animal rather than the other way around.

If the antlers look too heavy or cartoonish, thin them down to single lines rather than filled shapes, antlers read better as line work than as solid forms at this scale. No sienna on hand works fine with a warm mix of cream and a touch of cherry red instead.

Palette: Burnt Sienna,Cream,Payne’s Grey,Sage Green

Return indoors with a small bookshop, its window glowing warm against the cold outside. Build the window first as the real subject of this globe, a simple arched or square frame filled with a soft cream-yellow glow, with a few tiny rectangle books stacked just inside the glass in cherry red and sage green.

Paint the shop’s exterior walls in a cool icy blue-grey so they recede behind that warm window light, then let the glow itself bleed very slightly past its frame while still damp, that soft bleed is what makes light look like light rather than a flat painted square. A hanging sign above the door, just a small rectangle on a thin post, finishes the front.

If the glow looks too pale to notice, deepen the wall colour around it rather than brightening the window itself, contrast does more work here than intensity. This cozy lit-window mood shows up again in cabin drawing ideas if you want more practice with warm light against cold exteriors.

Palette: Icy Blue,Cream,Cherry Red,Sage Green

Take the scene out into the pines with a canvas tent and a small campfire burning beside it among the trees. Draw the tent as one simple triangle with a curved flap pulled back at the entrance, and place the fire slightly in front of and below it, light needs a clear source, so keep the flame small and let its colour do the work of warming everything near it.

Paint the tent in cream or soft sage, then the fire in layered cherry red and a touch of cream at its hottest center, and let a faint warm glow wash outward onto the snow right around it in the palest orange-cream you can mix. The pines behind stay cooler and darker in sage green and Payne’s grey to contrast against that warmth.

If the fire’s glow does not read clearly, add one ring of warm colour on the snow directly around its base before anything else dries, wet into wet, that single ring sells the whole idea of firelight. Swap the tent for a simple bedroll if you want an even faster version of this scene.

Palette: Cherry Red,Cream,Sage Green,Payne’s Grey

Perch something quiet on a branch next: an owl sitting still in the cold, its feathers fluffed up against the weather. An owl’s whole silhouette is really one soft rounded triangle, wider at the bottom and narrowing gently toward the head, skip the neck entirely and the shape will read correctly right away.

Paint the body in layered cream and soft grey-lilac, then once the first wash is dry, dry-brush short feather strokes radiating outward from the chest for texture rather than outlining each feather individually. Two large round eyes in Payne’s grey with small cream highlights left unpainted give it that watchful owl expression, keep them close together near the top of the head rather than spread wide.

If the feather texture looks scratchy, soften it by going over the driest strokes lightly with a clean damp brush, just enough to blur the hardest edges. A single bare branch in thin ink beneath its feet, dusted with a little white gouache snow, completes the perch.

You Will Need

• white gouache for branch snow

Palette: Cream,Soft Lilac,Payne’s Grey,Sage Green

Bring the figure back for this one: a ski chalet with a small skier out front, waving one arm up. Pose the skier with both skis pointing the same diagonal direction and one arm raised higher than the other, uneven arms are exactly what makes a tiny figure look like it is waving rather than just standing oddly.

Paint the chalet in warm cream with a sage green roof and a row of small square windows, then the skier in cherry red against the pale snow, kept small enough that the building stays the clear focus of the scene. Two thin ink lines with small curved tips at the skis finish the figure quickly.

If the waving arm looks awkward, bend it slightly at the elbow rather than keeping it a straight stick line, a small bend reads far more naturally as a wave. Try this scene after a few of the architecture-only ideas on this list, adding a moving figure on top of a building takes a touch more planning.

Palette: Cream,Sage Green,Cherry Red,Icy Blue

Change the landscape entirely with a windmill standing in a flat snowy Dutch field, its sails caught mid-turn. Draw the sails first as a simple X shape before adding the thin cross braces along each arm, and angle the whole X slightly off true vertical, a perfectly straight X looks frozen rather than turning.

Paint the windmill’s base in cream with a sage green cap, then wash the field around it in the palest icy blue, flat and wide with just a hint of a horizon line in soft lilac in the far distance. A single canal or ditch, just a thin pale blue stroke cutting across the foreground, adds a nice sense of this particular landscape without much extra work.

If the sails look stiff, round off the tips of the X slightly rather than leaving them sharp, that small softening suits the whimsical style better than hard geometric lines. For a faster version, skip the canal and let the windmill stand alone against the flat snowy field.

Palette: Cream,Sage Green,Icy Blue,Soft Lilac

Bring the human figure home with a girl building a snowman in her own garden, mid-roll on the base of his body. Give her a clear action to anchor the pose, bent slightly at the waist with both hands pressed against a half-formed snowball, that bent posture is what separates a figure doing something from a figure just standing near something.

Paint her coat in cherry red against the white garden, the half-built snowman in bright white gouache or bare paper with soft lilac shadow strokes to shape its curve, and a simple fence or hedge line in sage green behind them both to close the space in. Keep her face as just a few soft dashes, this scene works on posture and colour, not expression.

If the snowball looks flat instead of round, add one curved shadow stroke along its lower edge in soft lilac once the white has dried, that single curve gives it real volume. Try a quick ten minute version with just her and the one snowball shape, then add the fence and background once that core pairing feels solid.

You Will Need

• white gouache optional

Palette: Cherry Red,Soft Lilac,Sage Green,Cream

Warm the whole scene with steam for this one: a snow monkey soaking in a small hot spring, snow collecting on the rocks around it. Draw the water first as a simple pool shape with soft wavy edges, then tuck the monkey’s body low inside it so only the head and shoulders show above the surface, that partial submersion is what makes the scene read as a hot spring rather than just an animal sitting in snow.

Paint the water in warm cream with a hint of soft lilac steam rising off it in loose, broken brushstrokes, the monkey’s face in a warm pink-red with grey-lilac fur framing it, kept soft and a little fluffy at the edges. The rocks around the pool stay cool in sage green and Payne’s grey to contrast against that warm water.

If the steam looks too solid, paint it with a nearly dry brush in short upward flicks rather than one continuous wash, broken marks read as steam far better than a solid shape does. This one takes a bit more patience with wet-into-wet work than most on this list, so give the water layer time to settle before adding the monkey’s face on top.

Palette: Cream,Soft Lilac,Cherry Red,Sage Green

Take the globe to a city street with a New York brownstone and its stoop dusted in snow. Draw the stoop’s steps first as a simple stack of narrow rectangles leading up to the door, then the building rising above it with tall narrow windows, three or four stacked evenly keeps the proportions believable at this scale.

Paint the brownstone in warm sienna with cream window frames, then the steps and railing in cool icy blue-grey, letting a thin layer of white gouache sit along the top edge of each step for fresh snow. A single potted evergreen in sage green beside the door adds a bit of life to the entrance without much extra work.

If the windows start looking identical and flat, vary just one, a lit cream-yellow glow in a single window, that one warm spot gives the whole building a sense of being lived in. Swap the railing’s icy blue for plain black ink if you want a more classic, less wintry brownstone look.

You Will Need

• white gouache for step snow

Palette: Burnt Sienna,Cream,Icy Blue,Sage Green

Bring back a large still animal for this scene: a moose standing quietly at the edge of a frozen lake. Its head and antlers are the hardest part to get right, so sketch the antlers as two simple flat paddle shapes rather than many branching points, a moose’s antlers read as broad and palm-like, nothing like a reindeer’s thin branching ones.

Paint the moose’s body in deep sienna with a touch of Payne’s grey in the shadow along its legs and belly, then wash the lake behind it in pale icy blue with a thin lilac horizon line where the ice meets a soft winter sky. Keep the moose standing close to the water’s edge rather than centered in the globe, that placement gives the scene a sense of a real, specific moment.

If the antlers look too heavy against the body, thin them at the base where they meet the head, a slimmer connection point makes the whole shape feel lighter even though the paddles themselves stay broad. This subject rewards the slower forty minute approach, since the antler shape benefits from a careful first pencil pass before any paint goes down.

Palette: Burnt Sienna,Payne’s Grey,Icy Blue,Soft Lilac

Settle back into something small and quiet: a cottage garden in winter with a bird feeder hanging from a thin post. Draw the feeder first as a simple small house shape on a stick, then let a few bare rose canes or hedge branches curl up around the edges of the frame in thin, looping ink lines.

Paint the cottage faintly in the background in soft cream and sage, keeping it smaller and paler than the feeder so the feeder stays the clear subject, then add two or three tiny birds in cherry red and cream perched on or near it. Snow sits in soft white gouache dabs along the bare branches and the feeder’s roof.

If the bare branches look too sparse or too busy, aim for somewhere in the middle, three or four main curling lines rather than one bare stick or a tangled mass, that balance suits the cottagecore mood of this scene best. For more small garden subjects in a similar gentle style, the ideas in fairy house drawing ideas lean on the same kind of cozy, detailed little worlds.

You Will Need

• white gouache for snow dabs

Palette: Cream,Sage Green,Cherry Red,Soft Lilac

Add a touch of whimsy with a small Ferris wheel standing still in the snow, its cars hanging quietly at rest. Draw the wheel itself as one careful circle, then space the spokes evenly around it like the hands of a clock, even spacing is what keeps a hand-drawn wheel from looking lopsided once the cars are added.

Paint the structure in thin Payne’s grey ink lines left mostly unpainted, then colour each small car a different shade from the palette, cherry red, sage green, icy blue and cream in rotation, so the wheel reads as cheerful rather than uniform. A short string of tiny warm lights along the rim, small cream dots, catches the eye without much extra effort.

If the circle wobbles under a freehand attempt, trace around a coin or a small lid for the outer wheel shape before adding spokes and cars by hand, nobody will know the base circle had help. Keep the whole wheel a little smaller than the globe itself so there is clear space for snow falling all around it.

You Will Need

• coin or small lid to trace the wheel

Palette: Cherry Red,Sage Green,Icy Blue,Cream

Bring the scene indoors and close with something soft: a cat curled asleep on a tiny patchwork quilt. Draw the quilt first as a simple grid of uneven rectangles, no two quite the same size, that slight irregularity is exactly what makes a hand-drawn patchwork look charming rather than stiff.

Paint each quilt square a different soft colour from the palette, cherry red, sage green, cream and lilac in no particular order, then once dry, curl the sleeping cat on top in warm cream or grey, its shape one soft unbroken oval with a tucked tail and barely visible ears. Keep the cat’s outline loose rather than sharply defined against the busy quilt beneath it.

If the quilt pattern competes too much with the cat, mute one or two of its squares to a paler tone so the cat’s warmer colour still reads as the clear focal point. This cozy indoor pairing sits well beside the quiet mood in mouse drawing ideas if you enjoy small sleeping creatures in soft domestic scenes.

Palette: Cherry Red,Sage Green,Cream,Soft Lilac

Close the list with a classic pairing given a fresh setting: an igloo with a husky sitting alert beside its entrance. Build the igloo from one dome shape with a slightly curved tunnel entrance, then mark a few of its ice blocks with short curved ink lines rather than a full grid, just enough lines to suggest the structure without making it look like a brick wall.

Paint the dome in pale icy blue with soft lilac shadow on its curved underside, then the husky sitting upright beside the entrance in cream and Payne’s grey, its eyes left as two small bright dots of pale blue surrounded by dark fur for that striking husky look. Keep the dog a little smaller than the igloo so the structure stays the main shape in the globe.

If the igloo’s dome looks flat instead of rounded, add one more band of shadow curving along its lower right edge once the first wash dries, that extra curve gives it real volume fast. A short row of paw prints leading away from the entrance finishes the little scene nicely.

Palette: Icy Blue,Soft Lilac,Cream,Payne’s Grey

What to Do Next

Pick whichever globe you keep scrolling back to and start there, a small circle pencilled onto watercolor paper is all today’s sitting needs. Keep the scene simple, let the snow go on last, and you will have a finished little winter world before the page dries.

Frequently Asked Questions

What paper works best for a snow globe drawing in watercolor?

Cold press watercolor paper around 140lb handles wet washes without buckling. A smaller pad, around five by seven inches, suits these tiny scenes and keeps each globe quick to finish in one sitting.

How do you keep the round globe shape clean?

Trace a plate, lid or glass to pencil the circle before painting anything inside it. Painting right up to that pencil line, then going over it once dry with a loose ink circle, keeps the edge tidy without looking stiff or ruler-drawn.

How do you paint falling snow inside the globe?

Add snow last, after every other wash has dried completely. A white gel pen or a flick of white gouache from a nearly dry brush gives small, scattered dots that read as falling snow without covering the scene beneath.

What if the scene inside the globe looks too crowded?

Pick one clear subject per globe and let everything else support it. Leaving generous white space around the main cabin, animal or figure keeps the tiny scene readable even at a small size.

Can these snow globe scenes be painted without watercolor?

Yes, gouache or coloured pencil both work well for the same scenes. Gouache gives solid, opaque colour similar to the style here, while coloured pencil suits a drier, more controlled version of the same subjects.
