29 Deer Doodle Ideas of Fawns in Scarves, Snowy Antlers and Deer Friends

A deer doodle is the kind of small drawing that fills a page while the kettle boils: a few curved lines, a soft brown marker and suddenly there is a fawn with a scarf on. These little scenes are endlessly likeable because deer already read as gentle and a bit clumsy, so every pose, from wobbly legs on ice to a piggyback ride, lands as something sweet rather than something technical.

Below are 29 of them, starting simple and building up to small scenes with two characters, all made with the same quick fineliner and marker kit so your page feels like one set however many you draw.

Start here if deer doodles are new to you: a fawn standing in falling snow with a striped scarf wound round its neck. Sketch the body as two ovals, one for the chest and one for the hindquarters, then join them with a curved back line before adding thin legs and a small head with big ears.

Ink the outline first in fineliner, keeping the legs slightly bent so the pose feels soft rather than stiff, then add the scarf as a simple loop with a few dangling stripes. The most common slip is making the legs too thick, which turns a fawn into a goat, so keep them as single confident lines no wider at the knee than at the hoof.

Colour the scarf stripes in cherry red marker and leave the body as outline with a few chocolate brown dots for the coat pattern. If you do not have markers to hand, coloured pencil in the same two shades works just as well for this first one.

Draw the scarf loose and a little uneven rather than perfectly even: a slightly crooked knot is what makes the whole doodle feel hand drawn.

Move from a plain fawn to a full grown deer carrying a small snowdrift on its antlers. Draw the head first in profile, then branch the antlers out in a few forked lines before adding soft white snow humps along the top edges, left unfilled so the white paper does the work.

Here is the one trick that saves every antler drawing: picture the antlers as two open hands rather than a tangle of sticks, and keep each branch coming off the main beam at roughly the same angle so the rack reads as a pair rather than a scribble.

Ink the deer’s face and body in fineliner, then use chocolate brown marker for the ears and a light shadow under the snow humps to give them some lift off the antler. Leave the snow itself as bare paper with just a thin outline.

If your antlers start looking too symmetrical and stiff, erase one branch and redraw it at a slightly different length: real antlers are never quite matched.

Palette: Chocolate Brown,Warm White

Bring in a second character with two fawns sitting close together, passing one steaming mug of cocoa between them. Block in both bodies as rounded shapes first, overlapping slightly so they read as sitting side by side, then add the mug between their front legs or held in one fawn’s mouth.

Work the ink in from the back fawn forward, so the nearer one’s outline can sit cleanly over the first without you having to erase crossing lines. Keep both faces turned slightly toward the mug rather than straight ahead, which does more than anything else to make the scene feel like a shared moment.

Colour the cocoa and the steam lines in cherry red for the mug and leave the steam as loose curved fineliner marks, then add chocolate brown ear and hoof shading to both fawns so they match without becoming identical twins.

Give one fawn slightly closed eyes and the other wide open ones: that small difference in expression is what separates two characters from one shape copied twice.

Palette: Cherry Red,Chocolate Brown

Sketch the mug in last, once both fawns are inked, so its size matches the gap between their faces rather than fighting the layout.

Settle a deer down with its back against a tree trunk, a small open book held between its front hooves. Draw the tree first as a simple trunk and a few snow laden branches along the top of the page, then fit the deer’s curled sitting pose into the space at its base.

If figuring out how a deer even sits proves tricky, use the tree trunk as your measuring line: the deer’s back should lean against it at roughly the same angle as the trunk itself, which keeps the whole pose from looking like it is floating.

Ink the deer and the book together, keeping the book small and simple with just a curved spine and a couple of page lines, then move to the tree branches last since they frame everything else.

Brown marker suits the trunk and the deer’s ears, while a few cherry red marks work well as holly berries tucked along one branch, a nod to the classic winter motif without overusing it.

For something that captures real comic motion, draw a fawn mid slip on a frozen pond, all four legs splayed out at odd angles. Start with the body as a rounded oval tilted slightly off balance, then build each leg out from it at a different angle rather than the usual neat straight stance.

The quick version takes about ten minutes: a tilted body, four splayed legs and a surprised face is enough to read as funny. Given forty minutes, add small motion lines around the hooves and a crack or two in the ice beneath, which sells the slipping even more.

Ink the body and face first while the proportions still feel right in your head, then commit to the leg angles last so you are not second guessing an already placed line.

Leave the ice as bare white paper with just a thin blue grey fineliner outline for the edge: colouring it in flattens the shine that makes ice read as ice.

Palette: Chocolate Brown,Ice Blue

This one pairs a deer with a tiny bird nest tucked into the fork of its antlers, a small detail that turns a simple portrait into a story. Draw the deer’s head and antlers much as in the snow pile idea, then fit a small round nest shape, built from a few overlapping curved lines, into one of the antler forks.

Eye level matters here: draw the deer’s head slightly tilted upward, as if looking toward the nest, which puts the light naturally coming from above and lets you add a soft shadow under the nest where it rests on the antler branch.

Ink the deer’s face and antlers before the nest, since the nest needs to sit convincingly inside the fork rather than floating beside it. A single small bird peeking over the nest’s rim in cherry red marker adds warmth without extra line work.

Brown marker across the nest’s woven texture and a touch on the deer’s ears ties the two elements together as one calm little scene.

Palette: Chocolate Brown,Cherry Red

Draw a fawn with its head tilted back and tongue out, waiting for one large snowflake to land on its nose. Place the head at a steep upward angle first, since this pose lives or dies on that tilt, then build the body below it in a simple standing stance.

For the texture trick on this one: draw the snowflake as a single clean six pointed shape rather than a scribble, and leave a tiny gap of white paper around it so it reads as falling rather than stuck to the page.

Ink the face and tilted neck first while the angle is fresh, then the body, then add two or three smaller snowflakes scattered near the fawn drawn more loosely than the main one so it stays the focus.

No brown marker is strictly needed here: a touch of cherry red on the fawn’s nose tip is enough colour, keeping the whole doodle mostly black and white with one warm highlight.

Palette: Cherry Red,Chocolate Brown

Pair a full grown deer and a small fawn nose to nose, heads lowered toward each other in the middle of the page. Sketch both heads first, facing inward, and keep the deer noticeably larger than the fawn so the size gap reads clearly even before any other detail goes in.

A simple proportion check works well here: the fawn’s whole head should be about the size of the deer’s ear, which keeps the pair from accidentally looking like two similarly aged animals.

Ink the larger deer’s head and neck first, then the fawn’s, overlapping the noses slightly so the touch feels real rather than two heads simply placed near each other.

Cherry red works nicely as a small heart or a few sparkle marks floating between their noses, while chocolate brown shades both sets of ears so the family resemblance comes through even with the size difference.

Palette: Chocolate Brown,Cherry Red

Give a deer a pair of round earmuffs and a mid stride walking pose, one front leg lifted as if caught mid step. Start with the body in a simple side profile, lean the back slightly forward to suggest movement, then add the earmuffs as two soft circles connected by a thin band over the head.

If walking poses feel stiff, look at how the front and back legs on the same side move in opposite directions: when the front left leg lifts forward, the back left leg should sit slightly behind the body, not level with it.

Ink the body and legs first in that staggered stance, then the earmuffs last so you can adjust their size to sit comfortably over the already drawn ears.

Colour the earmuffs in cherry red marker with a small brown stitch line around the edge, a nice bit of contrast against the mostly outline body.

Palette: Cherry Red,Chocolate Brown

If you enjoy drawing small knitted accessories, try the same earmuff shape in different colours to see how it shifts the deer’s whole mood from playful to cosy.

Draw a fawn asleep, curled into a tight circle, resting inside a ring shaped dip of snow that cradles its body. Sketch the curled body first as one continuous rounded shape, head tucked near the back legs, before adding the surrounding snow ring as a simple curved outline just outside the body’s edge.

The quick ten minute version is just the curled fawn and the snow ring outline. With more time, add a soft brown shadow underneath the fawn where its body presses into the snow, which gives real weight to the sleeping pose.

Ink the fawn’s outline first, keeping the legs mostly hidden under the curled body since a sleeping pose needs very few visible limbs to read correctly.

Leave the snow ring as bare paper with just its outline in fineliner: filling it with colour would compete with the quiet mood of the sleeping fawn at the centre.

Palette: Chocolate Brown,Warm White

Hang a pair of small mittens from a deer’s antler branches, as if drying them after a walk in the snow. Draw the deer’s head and antlers as the steady base of this doodle, then add two simple mitten shapes, each just a rounded triangle with a thumb bump, draped over separate antler points.

For the light and setting, picture the deer standing near an open window or doorway, light falling from one side: shade the antler side away from that light slightly darker in brown marker so the mittens appear to actually hang there rather than float.

Ink the antlers and head first, then the mittens, letting one hang slightly lower than the other for a natural, just hung up look rather than a perfectly matched pair.

Colour one mitten in cherry red and leave the other as outline with brown trim, a small asymmetry that keeps the doodle visually interesting.

Palette: Cherry Red,Chocolate Brown

Have a fawn standing beside a snowman barely taller than its own knees, one front hoof pressed against the top snowball as if just finishing it. Draw the three stacked snowball shapes first, slightly uneven in size the way real snowmen always are, then add the fawn standing close beside it at a matching small scale.

Once this basic pairing works, vary it next time by changing the snowman’s accessories, a twig arm here, a pebble smile there, or by having the fawn sit rather than stand, which shifts the whole feel from busy to relaxed.

Ink the snowman first since its stacked shapes anchor the page, then the fawn, keeping its pose simple with both front legs doing the “work” of patting the snow into place.

A cherry red scarf on the snowman and brown shading along the fawn’s back give the pair a shared colour thread even though they are different shapes entirely.

Palette: Cherry Red,Chocolate Brown

Draw a deer’s head and one shoulder peeking out from behind a birch tree trunk, the rest of its body hidden. Start with the trunk itself, a tall simple shape with a few short horizontal dash marks for the classic birch bark pattern, then add the deer’s head emerging from one side at about the trunk’s midpoint.

Keep the eye level low, as if you are looking slightly up at the deer, which suits a shy peeking pose far better than a straight on view and makes the hidden body feel genuinely tucked behind the tree rather than just cut off by the page edge.

Ink the trunk and bark marks first since they set the scale for everything else, then the deer’s head last, checking it fits comfortably against the trunk’s width before committing to the final lines.

Brown marker for the deer’s ear and a faint grey fineliner for the bark dashes keeps the whole doodle feeling wintry and quiet. For more woodland pairings at this kind of scale, the sketchbook doodles of forest animals page is worth a look.

Palette: Chocolate Brown,Soft Grey

Draw two adult deer standing side by side, both wrapped into opposite ends of one long shared scarf. Block in both bodies first, standing close together, then run the scarf as one continuous shape across both necks, winding slightly differently on each side so it reads as one long piece rather than two separate scarves.

Measure the scarf’s length against the gap between the two deer’s shoulders before inking it: it should stretch comfortably across without pulling either head unnaturally close to the other.

Ink both deer bodies first, keeping their stances mirrored but not identical, then the scarf last so its winding path can follow the already settled neck positions.

Colour the scarf in cherry red stripes running its full length, with chocolate brown used lightly on both sets of ears so the pair reads as a matched duo despite their slightly different poses.

Palette: Cherry Red,Chocolate Brown

Give a deer a small basket of firewood balanced across its back, as if returning home from gathering logs. Draw the deer’s standing body first in side profile, then add a simple woven basket shape resting just behind the shoulders, filled with a few short angled log shapes poking over the rim.

The quick version keeps the basket small with three or four logs. With more time, add a thin rope or strap crossing the deer’s chest to hold the basket in place, which makes the whole load feel properly secured rather than balanced by magic.

Ink the deer’s body and legs first, then the basket and logs, working the log shapes in slightly overlapping so they read as a stacked pile rather than floating separately.

Chocolate brown suits the logs and the basket weave perfectly, while a single cherry red berry sprig tied to the basket handle adds a small warm accent.

Palette: Chocolate Brown,Cherry Red

Draw a fawn riding a small wooden sled down a gentle snowy slope, front legs gripping the sled’s edge. Sketch the hill first as a simple curved line sloping from upper left to lower right, then place the sled and fawn partway down it, tilted slightly to match the slope’s angle.

Here is the one trick that keeps this from looking static: angle the fawn’s ears and tail backward, away from the direction of travel, exactly as they would blow in the rush of moving downhill.

Ink the hill line first, then the sled as a simple flat board with curved front runners, then the fawn sitting on top, checking its tilt matches the slope before adding the final outline.

Brown marker for the wooden sled and a small cherry red hat on the fawn’s head give the scene a cosy, playful finish without much extra line work.

Palette: Chocolate Brown,Cherry Red

Draw a deer with a knitted bobble hat caught crooked on just one antler, as if it slipped off while being carried. Start with the head and antlers as usual, then add the hat as a simple rounded dome shape with a pom pom on top, hooked over one antler branch at an uneven angle rather than sitting neatly on the head.

Picture the hat’s weight pulling it slightly to one side: shade the underside of the hat in chocolate brown where it presses against the antler, which sells the idea that it is caught there rather than painted on.

Ink the head and antlers first, then the hat last, adjusting its tilt once you can see exactly how much space the antler branch gives you to work with.

Cherry red suits the hat’s main colour well, with a small brown pom pom on top and a knitted rib pattern along the brim drawn as a few short parallel lines.

Palette: Cherry Red,Chocolate Brown

Draw a fawn standing with its head lowered, nibbling at a small apple resting on the snow in front of it. Sketch the body in a simple grazing stance first, head tilted down, then place the apple as one round shape with a tiny stem, positioned right where the fawn’s mouth meets the ground.

If you have thirty seconds more, add one small bite mark on the apple’s near side: that single detail does more to show the nibbling action than any amount of extra line work around the mouth.

Ink the fawn’s lowered head and body first, then the apple last so its exact placement can match wherever the mouth ended up landing on the page.

Cherry red works beautifully as the apple’s main colour, with a thin chocolate brown stem and a small brown patch where the bite mark exposes the inside.

Palette: Cherry Red,Chocolate Brown

For a properly playful one, draw a deer sitting upright with a ball of yarn unspooled across its antlers, as if the branches are doubling as a yarn holder while it knits. Sketch the sitting body first, then the antlers, then drape a loose spiral of yarn line from the ball down to a pair of simple knitting needles held between the front hooves.

Vary this idea next time by swapping the yarn colour or giving the deer a half finished scarf growing from the needles instead of just the yarn ball, which turns one gag into a small set with a clear sense of progress.

Ink the deer’s body and antlers first, then the yarn strand, letting it loop loosely over one antler branch rather than running in a straight stiff line.

Cherry red yarn against chocolate brown antlers and ears gives this doodle its warmest colour pairing in the whole set, so let both colours sit a little bolder here than elsewhere.

Palette: Cherry Red,Chocolate Brown

Draw a small fawn pressed against one of its mother’s front legs, head tucked in close, in a simple standing pose. Sketch the mother deer’s body first as the larger, steadier shape on the page, then build the fawn in tight against one leg, noticeably smaller and slightly overlapping the mother’s outline.

Check the size relationship before inking: the fawn’s shoulder height should sit roughly level with the midpoint of the mother’s leg, which keeps the hug believable rather than making the fawn look oddly tall or impossibly tiny.

Ink the mother’s body and legs first since the fawn depends on them for placement, then add the fawn last, letting its head overlap the mother’s leg line slightly rather than stopping neatly beside it.

Chocolate brown shading along both their backs and a small cherry red bow on the fawn’s ear finish the pair with a bit of warmth.

Palette: Chocolate Brown,Cherry Red

Draw a deer standing at the edge of a frozen pond, head lowered, looking at its own reflection in the ice below. Sketch the standing deer first, then draw the pond’s edge as a simple curved line beneath its lowered head, and mirror the head and antlers upside down just below that line for the reflection.

The reflection only convinces if the light sits consistently: decide the main light comes from one side, shade that same side slightly in both the real deer and its mirrored reflection, and leave the opposite sides lighter in both.

Ink the standing deer fully first, then trace its head and antler shape upside down for the reflection, simplifying the reflected version slightly so it reads as a mirror image rather than a second full deer.

Leave the ice surface mostly bare paper with a faint grey fineliner outline, and add just a touch of chocolate brown to both the real and reflected ears to tie the pair together.

Palette: Chocolate Brown,Ice Blue

Draw a fawn sitting close beside a small campfire, a blanket draped over its back and shoulders. Sketch the fire first as a simple triangular shape with a few wavy inner lines for flame, then place the fawn just beside it, body slightly hunched under the blanket’s weight.

If this is your first time drawing fire, keep the flame shapes few and simple, three or four overlapping teardrop curves is plenty: too many small wavy lines make it read as scribble rather than flame.

Ink the fire first since its glow sets the mood for the whole scene, then the fawn and blanket, letting the blanket’s edge drape unevenly over one side for a cosy, just wrapped look.

Cherry red works well for both the flame tips and the blanket, with chocolate brown logs beneath the fire and the fawn’s visible ear peeking from under the wrap.

Palette: Cherry Red,Chocolate Brown

Draw a deer’s head and shoulders with a small sprig of berries tucked behind one ear, a quiet and quick portrait style doodle. Sketch the head in profile first, then add the berry sprig as three or four small round shapes clustered on a short stem, tucked just behind the ear’s base.

For the quick ten minute version, the head, ear and berry sprig alone make a complete little doodle. With more time, add a few short leaf shapes among the berries and a bit of shading along the deer’s jaw and neck to round the portrait out.

Ink the head and ear first, then the berry sprig last, keeping the berries small enough that they tuck in neatly rather than overwhelming the ear.

Cherry red for the berries against chocolate brown ear shading makes this one of the simplest but most striking colour pairings in the whole set.

Palette: Cherry Red,Chocolate Brown

Draw a fawn mid leap over a rounded snowdrift, all four legs tucked up beneath its body. Sketch the snowdrift first as a simple rounded mound along the bottom of the page, then place the fawn above and slightly beyond it, body stretched long and legs gathered close rather than extended.

Jumping poses go wrong most often when the legs stay too straight: tuck all four legs in toward the belly, almost like a folded accordion, which is exactly what a real deer does mid jump and instantly makes the pose feel airborne.

Ink the snowdrift first to anchor the ground level, then the fawn’s stretched body and tucked legs, finishing with a few small motion lines trailing behind to suggest the speed of the leap.

Brown marker for light shading along the fawn’s back and a soft grey fineliner outline on the snowdrift keep the whole scene feeling crisp and cold.

Palette: Chocolate Brown,Soft Grey

Draw an adult deer carrying a small fawn on its back, the fawn’s front legs wrapped loosely around the larger deer’s neck. Sketch the adult deer’s body first in a steady standing pose, then build the fawn on top, smaller in scale and curled forward slightly as if holding on.

Keep the fawn’s legs draped rather than gripping tightly: a loose, relaxed wrap around the neck reads as a comfortable ride, while stiff straight legs make the pose look more like a struggle than a piggyback.

Ink the standing adult deer first since its pose has to carry the weight of both figures, then the fawn on top, overlapping its front legs over the adult’s neck line rather than stopping beside it.

Chocolate brown shading on both their backs and a small cherry red bow on the fawn’s tail give this pairing a cheerful finishing touch. For more character pairs on little adventures together, the friends drawing ideas page is worth a browse.

Palette: Chocolate Brown,Cherry Red

Draw a deer lowering its head toward a small squirrel, both of them holding opposite ends of one acorn between them. Sketch the deer’s lowered head and neck first, then add the squirrel sitting upright nearby, scaled much smaller, with its tail curled up behind its back.

Size contrast carries this whole doodle: keep the squirrel’s entire body roughly the size of the deer’s head, and the pairing will read clearly even before the acorn goes in.

Ink the deer’s head and neck first, then the squirrel, then the acorn last, positioned right between their two mouths or paws so it is obviously the thing being shared.

Chocolate brown suits the squirrel’s fur and the acorn’s cap, with a small cherry red leaf tucked beside the acorn for a bit of colour balance against all that brown.

Palette: Chocolate Brown,Cherry Red

Draw a fawn standing awkwardly in a pair of oversized snow boots, legs spread slightly wider than usual for balance. Sketch the fawn’s body first in a simple standing stance, then add the boots as rounded chunky shapes around each lower leg, noticeably bigger than the leg itself to sell the oversized joke.

If this is your first time drawing boots on an animal, draw the leg first and the boot second, wrapping the boot shape around the leg rather than trying to draw boot and leg as one combined shape from the start.

Ink the fawn’s body and legs first, then the four boots, checking that at least one looks slightly mismatched in angle from the others for a properly clumsy, just learning to walk feel.

Cherry red boots against the fawn’s plain outline body make this one of the punchiest colour moments in the set, so keep the rest of the doodle simple to let the boots stand out.

Palette: Cherry Red,Chocolate Brown

Draw a deer lying down, head resting on a soft raised mound of snow shaped roughly like a pillow. Sketch the deer’s lying body first, legs folded beneath it, then shape the snow pillow as a simple rounded mound right where the head comes to rest, slightly indented where the head presses in.

Once this pose feels comfortable, vary it next time by changing where the deer sleeps: against a tree root, inside a hollow log shape, or under a blanket of leaves instead of snow, using the same folded lying pose each time as your base.

Ink the lying body and folded legs first, then the snow pillow, making sure the indentation under the head lines up exactly with where the head actually rests rather than floating beside it.

Chocolate brown shading along the deer’s back and a faint grey fineliner line around the snow pillow’s indent finish this quiet closing scene gently.

Palette: Chocolate Brown,Soft Grey

Close the set with a fawn mid glide on ice skates, wearing a snug cherry red sweater and one leg lifted behind for balance. Sketch the body first in a gliding lean, front legs tucked forward and the back leg stretched out behind, then add small simple skate blades under each front hoof.

Balance is everything in a skating pose: lean the whole body forward slightly from the hips, not just the head, and keep the lifted back leg roughly level with the body’s own tilt rather than sticking straight up, which is what makes a gliding pose look convincing rather than frozen mid fall.

Ink the leaning body and tucked legs first, then the skate blades last, since their angle needs to match whichever way the body is gliding.

Cherry red fills the sweater generously while chocolate brown stays reserved for the ears and a thin blade outline, a fitting, warm finish to end the page on.

What to Do Next

Pick whichever fawn or deer caught your eye first and start there on a plain or dot grid page, fineliner in hand and both markers nearby for when the scarf, mittens or berries need their colour. One finished doodle tends to pull the next one out of you, so keep the page open for a second or third.

Frequently Asked Questions

What pens work best for a deer doodle like these?

A fine tipped black fineliner, around 0.3 to 0.5 millimetres, gives the cleanest outline for deer doodles. Add alcohol markers in brown and red only for small accents, since too much colour turns a doodle into a full illustration.

How do I keep deer antlers from looking messy?

Draw antlers as a few confident forked branches coming off one main beam at similar angles, rather than many small scribbled lines. Sketch lightly first, then ink only the branches you actually want to keep.

How long should one deer doodle take?

Most of these take between ten and twenty minutes once the pose is sketched out, since the fineliner and marker work moves quickly. Scenes with two characters or extra props can run closer to thirty minutes.

What if I only have one marker colour?

Either chocolate brown or cherry red alone still works well, since the fineliner outline carries most of the doodle on its own. Use the single colour for the warmest or most important detail, like a scarf or a nose.

Do I need to draw deer realistically for these to work?

No, these doodles rely on simple rounded shapes and expression rather than anatomical accuracy. Keeping proportions soft and a little exaggerated is actually what makes them feel charming rather than stiff.
