37 Cat Illustration Ideas of Radiator Naps, Snow Day Windows and Wool Blankets

18

A cat illustration built around radiator naps and frosty windows practically paints itself once you know the shapes to flatten and the colors to mix. These are the moments that make a house feel warm in the middle of winter: a cat curled on wool, a window fogged with breath, a kettle hissing on the stove. Every one of the 37 ideas below is a tiny homey story you can finish in a single sitting.

You will move through gift tag simple sketches up to busier scenes with two figures or a second animal, so pick whichever matches the time you have this afternoon. Keep your gouache thick enough to sit flat and opaque, and let the cream background do most of the quiet work around each cozy little scene.

Start with the simplest scene on the list: a ginger cat stretched flat along a radiator shelf below a frosty window. Block in the shelf and window as two flat cream and icy blue rectangles first, then drop in the cat’s silhouette as one long loaf shape with the tail tucked underneath. Work radiator ribs last, a few short chocolate brown lines under the shelf, so they read as texture rather than fuss.

Mix your ginger from cadmium orange cut with a touch of burnt sienna, and keep it flat with no shading gradient, just one midtone shape and a slightly darker stripe pattern painted wet on dry once the base coat is fully dry. If the stripes bleed, your base layer was still damp, so wait longer next time or switch to a drier brush loaded with less water.

Measure before you paint: the cat’s body length should run close to three times the height of its head, which keeps a sleeping cat from looking too short or too long on the shelf. If you only have craft acrylic on hand, it can stand in for gouache, just work a little faster since it dries harder and quicker.

Finish with a few icy blue dots of frost scattered across the window glass using the tip of a small round brush.

Move next to a black cat sitting upright in a window seat, watching snow fall outside. Black cats read as pure silhouette in flat gouache, so paint the whole body as one solid shape first: rounded back, pointed ears, tail curled around the front paws. Add the window seat cushion underneath in a sage green block before the cat goes on top, so the edges stay crisp where they meet.

Eye level matters here. Keep the window’s horizon line low in the frame, at roughly cat-eye height, so the snow outside feels like it is falling past the glass rather than floating flat on top of it. A few falling snowflakes painted smaller and paler as they move toward the horizon will push that sense of distance.

The place this goes wrong is usually the whiskers and eye highlights, painted too early and then smudged by other wet layers. Save those for the very last step with a fine liner brush or a white gel pen once everything else is bone dry. If your black gouache looks flat and lifeless, warm it slightly with a touch of chocolate brown.

Add two pale yellow green eyes last for the only bright note in the whole shape.

You Will Need

• white gel pen for whiskers

After two sitting poses, try a tabby cat almost swallowed by a chunky knit blanket on the sofa. Block the blanket first as a big soft chocolate brown or cream shape with thick ridged folds, then nestle the cat’s head and one paw peeking out near the top. Painting the blanket before the cat keeps the fold lines from fighting with the fur pattern later.

For the knit texture, load a flat brush with slightly thicker paint and drag short, even strokes across the blanket in one direction, then a second layer going the other way to suggest a cable knit without drawing every stitch. This dry brush approach is quicker than it looks and reads as wool from across a room.

Tabby stripes go on last, dark chocolate brown arcs painted over the dry base coat on just the visible head and paw, following the curve of the skull rather than running straight across it. If the stripes look too busy, you likely added too many, so stop at four or five confident marks.

Give yourself ten minutes for just the blanket and peeking head, or stretch to forty minutes and add a second paw and a cherry red cushion tucked beside the cat.

If you enjoy this one, the cat pencil drawing ideas for beginners are a good warm up for getting tabby markings right before you commit to paint.

Bring in some motion with a kitten caught mid tumble in a ball of sage green yarn. Sketch the kitten’s pose first as a loose action curve rather than a static sit, one back leg kicked out, paws reaching for a loop of yarn, since the energy of the pose is what sells the moment.

Paint the yarn ball as a rounded sage green shape with a few trailing loose strands looping around a back leg or paw, left slightly open ended rather than a tight ball. Keep the kitten’s body proportions soft and round, with the head taking up close to a third of its total height, since kittens read as kittens mostly through that oversized head to body ratio.

Where this idea usually goes wrong is tangled yarn lines that turn into a scribble. Paint only three or four confident loops with a fine round brush loaded with thinned paint, and let the rest of the ball stay a solid shape. A toothpick dipped in paint works well for the thinnest trailing strand if your brush feels too thick.

Finish with one bright cherry red bow painted at the base of the yarn ball for a single warm accent.

You Will Need

• toothpick for fine yarn lines

Settle things down again with a cat flattened out asleep on a pile of warm laundry fresh from the dryer. Build the laundry pile first as a stack of soft rounded cream and chocolate brown shapes, overlapping like loose pillows, before adding the cat draped across the top with legs tucked completely out of sight.

This pose is all about weight, so paint the cat’s belly shape pressing slightly into the laundry below it rather than floating on top. A faint shadow line in a muted brown where the cat meets the fabric does most of that work without needing any blending.

The edges of the laundry folds are where softness matters most. Once your base shapes are dry, use a slightly damp clean brush to lift a thin highlight along the top of each fold, which keeps the pile looking soft rather than carved from stone.

If gouache lifting feels fiddly, a white gel pen can fake the same highlight once everything is fully dry.

You Will Need

• clean damp brush for lifting highlights

Give the woodstove its own small scene with a cat curled tight in a wicker basket nearby. Paint the basket as a chocolate brown oval first, then add its woven texture with short diagonal strokes crossing in two directions, a quick pattern that reads as wicker without tracing every reed.

The woodstove sits low in the frame behind the basket, so keep its glow as the room’s main light source. Paint a warm cherry red and orange glow spilling from its small door onto the floor beside the basket, which should be the brightest patch of color anywhere in the scene.

Curl the cat into one tight round shape inside the basket, nose tucked near its tail, with only a hint of ear and paw breaking the oval’s edge. If the cat’s shape fights the basket’s shape, simplify the cat further until it reads as one soft comma inside the oval.

Try the same woodstove glow trick again later behind a different sleeping animal to see how much warmth one small light source can add.

Step outside the house for this one: a white cat almost lost against snow on an outdoor windowsill. The trick to painting a white subject on a white ground is edges, not color, so the entire cat shape is built from a cool icy blue shadow line along its back and one side, with the paper or a near white gouache mix left untouched everywhere else.

Paint the snow first as a slightly warmer cream white than the cat, which gives you two whites close enough to read as one season but different enough that the cat does not vanish completely. The windowsill itself, in chocolate brown, is what grounds the whole scene and gives the eye something solid to land on.

Where beginners lose this cat is adding too much shadow and turning it grey all over. Keep shading to the underside of the belly and along one side of the face only, and leave at least half the cat as bare untouched white.

A single icy blue eye looking straight out is the one detail allowed to be strong.

Bring some stillness to the page with a cat seated squarely on an open book beside a steaming cup of tea. Paint the book first, two flat cream pages fanned open with a few short chocolate brown lines suggesting text, then set the cup just beside it with a small rising curl of steam.

Perspective is the thing to get right here. Look at the book and cup from slightly above, a high eye level, since that angle shows the open pages and the top of the cup clearly and makes the whole tabletop read as a believable surface rather than a flat sticker.

Sit the cat squarely in the middle of the open book with its front paws tucked under, a simple loaf shape that does not need much detail to feel content. Steam is the one soft element allowed in this otherwise flat style, so paint it as two or three thin curling icy blue white lines with a barely loaded brush.

Swap the tea for a small plate of cookies if you want a slightly different still life without changing the composition.

Palette: Cream,Chocolate Brown,Cherry Red,Icy Blue

Add a second cat into one scene for the first time: two cats sharing a heated blanket on an unmade bed. Paint the rumpled bedding first as large soft cream and sage green shapes with a few simple fold lines, since an unmade bed only needs two or three creases to read correctly, not a dozen.

Overlap the two cats so one sits slightly in front of the other, which immediately gives the pair depth without any real perspective work. Vary their poses, one curled tight and one stretched longer, so the eye can tell them apart at a glance even if both are the same ginger or grey color.

The heated blanket’s cord, a thin chocolate brown line trailing off the bed toward a wall socket, is a small story detail that is easy to forget and worth adding last. If the two cats start to blend into one shape, separate them with a thin cream gap or a shift in color between the pair.

Keep the blanket’s pattern simple, just a few quilted diamond lines, so it supports the cats rather than competing with them.

Palette: Cream,Sage Green,Burnt Sienna,Chocolate Brown

Return to the window for a cat up on its hind legs, pawing at frost patterns on the glass. Build the window pane first as one large icy blue rectangle, then paint the frost as feathery white branching lines fanning out from one corner, the kind of pattern real frost makes on cold glass.

For that feathery texture, load a small round brush with thin white gouache and drag it in short quick strokes outward from a single point, lifting the brush as you go so each line tapers to nothing. This dry drag technique works far better than trying to draw frost with a steady painted line.

Stand the cat on its back legs reaching one front paw toward the glass, a simple upright pose that only needs the back leg bent and the tail used as a counterbalance behind it. If the standing pose looks stiff, angle the head slightly to one side so the cat looks curious rather than posed.

One paw print smudge in the frost, right where the cat is reaching, finishes the story in a single small mark.

Palette: Icy Blue,Titanium White,Chocolate Brown,Cream

Keep the energy going with a cat batting at a knitting needle while someone knits nearby. Paint the knitter’s hands and the edge of a sage green sweater sleeve first, just enough to suggest a person without painting a full figure, then add the knitting needles crossing at an angle with a loop of yarn stretched between them.

The cat’s raised paw is the whole story here, so exaggerate it slightly: stretch the leg a touch longer than life and splay the toes open, which reads as mid swipe far better than an anatomically careful paw would. Keep the rest of the body low and grounded in a simple crouch so the raised paw has somewhere dramatic to go.

Where this scene can go wrong is the hands looking stiff or too detailed next to the flat cat. Simplify the hands to soft rounded shapes with only a suggestion of fingers, matching the same flat confident style as everything else on the page.

A loose loop of cherry red yarn stretched between the needles adds one bright curved line through the whole composition.

Palette: Sage Green,Cherry Red,Chocolate Brown,Cream

Hide most of the subject this time: a calico cat asleep under a quilt with only its ears poking out. Paint the quilt first as a large soft mound in cream and sage green with a simple patchwork grid of thin chocolate brown lines, and leave a small gap near the top for the ears to emerge.

Comparison is the trick that keeps this one convincing: the two ears should sit close together and at roughly the same small size, just a touch apart, since real cats tuck their ears close when fully curled. Make them too far apart or too large and the mound reads as a lump of fabric rather than a sleeping cat.

Calico color only needs to appear on the ears themselves, so keep it simple: one ear mostly chocolate brown, the other with a small patch of cream or ginger at the tip. That tiny color difference is enough to tell the whole breed story without painting any more of the cat.

Add a single whisker poking out from under the quilt’s edge for a little extra charm.

Palette: Cream,Sage Green,Chocolate Brown,Cadmium Orange

Move the cat’s attention outside again with a cat watching birds at a snowy feeder through the glass. Paint the feeder and a couple of small round birds first, out beyond the window, keeping them simple and slightly smaller than you think, since distance is what the scene needs to feel real.

Eye level does a lot of work here too: set the window low in the frame and the feeder a little higher outside, so the cat looks genuinely up and out rather than straight across at something on the same level. That small upward tilt in the cat’s head is the detail that sells the whole watching pose.

Keep the cat’s body tense and alert rather than curled, ears forward, tail low and still, front paws gathered tightly together. If the pose looks too relaxed, narrow the eyes slightly and bring the shoulders up a touch, which reads instantly as focused attention.

A thin crust of snow along the windowsill ties the indoor and outdoor halves of the scene together.

Palette: Icy Blue,Cream,Chocolate Brown,Burnt Sienna

Dress up the subject for this one: a kitten in a tiny cherry red knit sweater. Paint the sweater first as a simple fitted shape over the kitten’s torso, leaving the head, legs and tail free, and add a ribbed texture at the neck and leg openings with a few short dry brush strokes.

Quick version first: ten minutes gets you the kitten’s basic pose and the flat red sweater block, which is more than enough for a charming small piece on its own. The forty minute version adds a simple cable or stripe pattern knitted into the sweater and a tiny bit of shading along one side to show the fabric has some thickness to it.

Kittens read as young mostly through proportion, so keep the head large, the legs short and the paws slightly oversized compared to the body. If the sweater makes the kitten look stiff, add a little bagginess at the sleeves and a slight wrinkle where the fabric bunches near the front legs.

One white gel pen highlight along the top of the head finishes the soft young fur without any blending at all.

You Will Need

• white gel pen

Palette: Cherry Red,Cream,Burnt Sienna,Chocolate Brown

Take a break from windows and let the light do the talking: a cat stretched out in a patch of pale winter sunlight on the rug. Paint the rug first in a flat sage green or cream, then block in one warm, slightly brighter patch of light falling across it at a low diagonal angle, the kind low winter sun makes through a window.

Light direction decides everything else in this piece. Since winter sun sits low, let the light patch stretch long and thin across the floor rather than sitting in a neat square, and paint the cat lying fully within that warm shape with one side of its body catching a touch more cream white highlight where the light hits strongest.

Stretch the cat’s body out fully, front legs extended forward and back legs trailing behind, a pose that is really just one long gentle curve from nose to tail tip. If the stretch looks awkward, shorten the body slightly and lengthen the legs instead, which almost always reads as more relaxed.

Try the same low sunlight patch again later falling across a different surface, like floorboards or a staircase, to see how the shape of the light changes the whole mood.

Palette: Sage Green,Cream,Burnt Sienna,Chocolate Brown

Head into the kitchen for a cat sitting beside a soup pot steaming on the stove. Paint the stovetop and pot first, a simple chocolate brown pot with a cherry red lid handle, then add two or three curling lines of steam rising straight up above it before the cat goes in beside it.

Sit the cat upright and patient right next to the stove, nose slightly tilted up toward the steam, since that small head angle is what suggests the cat is actually interested in the smell rather than just placed nearby. Keep its tail wrapped neatly around its front paws for a tidy, contented silhouette.

Steam is the trickiest part to keep from looking like smoke or fog. Paint it thin, with only two or three curling lines rather than a solid cloud, using a barely loaded round brush so the paint goes on almost dry and translucent.

A wooden spoon resting against the pot’s rim is a small extra detail worth adding if you have time left.

Palette: Chocolate Brown,Cherry Red,Cream,Icy Blue

Return to wool for a cat peeking out of a basket piled with wool scarves. Paint the basket as a chocolate brown woven oval first, then fill it generously with rolled and draped scarves in sage green and cherry red before the cat’s head pokes up through the middle of the pile.

Rolled scarves are easiest painted as soft overlapping ovals of different sizes rather than trying to draw folded fabric realistically. Vary the sizes and let two or three colors overlap slightly at their edges, which reads instantly as a cozy jumble without much effort.

Keep the cat’s visible portion small and simple, just the head and perhaps one paw resting on the scarf pile, ears alert and eyes wide, as if it just climbed in. If the scarves start to swallow the cat completely, lighten the scarf color directly behind its head so the silhouette still separates clearly.

One loose scarf fringe trailing over the basket’s edge adds movement to an otherwise still scene.

Palette: Chocolate Brown,Sage Green,Cherry Red,Cream

Keep the kitchen theme going with a grey cat dozing in a bread basket on the kitchen table, somehow fitting itself into a space clearly meant for loaves. Paint the basket’s woven texture first with the same crossing diagonal strokes used for other wicker pieces on this list, then curl the cat down into it so its edges spill slightly over the rim.

Grey cats need a touch more care in mixing than black or ginger ones, since flat grey can look lifeless. Mix Payne’s grey with a small amount of burnt sienna to warm it just enough, and keep the whole body one value with only a slightly darker line along the spine and tail.

The comic charm of this scene comes from scale, so make sure the basket reads as clearly too small, with at least one paw or the tail draped outside its rim. If the basket looks roomy enough for the cat to fit comfortably, it loses the joke entirely.

A single loaf of bread set just beside the basket, displaced, finishes the little story.

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Burnt Sienna,Chocolate Brown,Cream

Give the fireplace its own quiet moment with a cat curled on a sheepskin rug in front of it. Paint the sheepskin first as a large irregular cream shape with a soft wavy edge, then add short curling marks across its surface in a slightly darker cream to suggest the texture of the wool without painting every curl.

The fireplace behind should stay simple, a dark chocolate brown opening with a warm cherry red and orange glow at its base, since this is really a scene about the cat and the rug, with the fire as a light source rather than the focus. Keep the flame shapes loose and few, three or four licks of color at most.

Curl the cat into one relaxed oval right in the center of the sheepskin, letting its fur edge blur slightly into the rug’s texture so the two feel connected rather than stacked on top of each other. If the cat looks too separate from the rug, soften the line between them with a few short strokes of the rug’s cream color over the cat’s lower edge.

Try painting the same sheepskin rug empty next time, just to see how much atmosphere the glow alone carries without a subject sitting on it.

Palette: Cream,Chocolate Brown,Cherry Red,Cadmium Orange

Slow the mood right down with a cat watching a single candle flicker on a side table. Paint the candle and its small chocolate brown holder first, keeping the flame as one small teardrop shape in cherry red and cadmium orange with a tiny bright core left nearly white.

Since the candle is the only light source in this piece, let its glow spread out gently across the table surface and up onto the nearest side of the cat’s face, while the rest of the room around it stays in a cooler, slightly muted cream. That contrast between one warm glowing patch and a cooler surround is what makes a single candle feel believable.

Keep the cat still and low, eyes fixed on the flame, tail wrapped close, since any motion in the pose would fight the quiet mood of the scene. If the candlelight on the cat’s face looks too strong or obvious, soften it with a very thin wash rather than a solid block of color.

A faint reflection of the flame on the tabletop, just a small smear of warm color, adds a nice last touch.

Palette: Cherry Red,Cadmium Orange,Chocolate Brown,Cream

Add a little domestic comedy with a cat napping inside an open suitcase packed with sweaters. Paint the open suitcase first as two flat panels, the lid propped open behind and the body in front, filled with a few folded sweater shapes in sage green and cherry red before the cat settles on top.

Folded sweaters are easiest painted as simple stacked rectangles with slightly rounded corners and one or two fold lines each, never more, since too much detail here will fight with the cat for attention. Vary just the colors and sizes slightly so the stack reads as several sweaters rather than one striped block.

Curl the cat into the suitcase’s shape rather than on top of it, letting its body follow the rectangle’s edges a little, which is what makes it look like it chose this spot on purpose. If the suitcase looks too empty around the cat, tuck one more rolled sweater into a corner to fill the gap.

A luggage tag dangling from the handle is a small charming detail if you want to add one last touch.

Palette: Sage Green,Cherry Red,Chocolate Brown,Cream

Give this cat the widest view on the list: a bay window with a snowy street stretching out beyond it. Paint the bay window’s angled panes first, three flat sections meeting at soft angles, which immediately gives the scene more depth than a single straight window would.

Through the glass, keep the snowy street simple and distant: a pale cream road, a couple of small chocolate brown rooftops, and one or two tiny lamp posts, all smaller and less detailed than anything in the room, which is what sells the sense of looking out from somewhere warm. Resist adding too much detail out there, since a quiet, soft background makes the room read as cozier by contrast.

Sit the cat centrally across the window seat cushion, taking up most of the foreground, so it clearly belongs to the warm interior rather than the cold scene outside. If the three window panes start to feel flat or confusing, shift their values slightly, a touch darker on the angled side panes than the central one.

A string of warm fairy lights along the window frame is an easy way to add a little extra glow without much extra painting.

For more window and winter street inspiration, the Christmas window drawing ideas cover a similar mood from the street side looking in.

Palette: Icy Blue,Cream,Chocolate Brown,Sage Green

Move the cat up off the floor entirely: a cat lounging on a bookshelf between rows of books. Paint the shelf first as a simple chocolate brown horizontal band, then fill most of it with a row of books painted as flat rectangles of varying heights and widths in sage green, cherry red and cream, leaving one clear gap for the cat to drape into.

Book spines are a fast way to add color variety without much work, so vary their widths more than their heights and keep any lettering to a few short unreadable marks rather than actual words. Three or four different colors across the row is plenty.

Drape the cat across the gap with its body following the shelf’s horizontal line, one paw or the tail hanging slightly over the edge, which reads immediately as a cat that has claimed this spot rather than one simply placed there. If the cat looks like it is floating above the shelf, add a thin shadow line where its belly meets the wood.

A single book left open and splayed just below the shelf is a nice extra detail that ties the whole scene to reading.

Palette: Chocolate Brown,Sage Green,Cherry Red,Cream

Bring in a small morning story: a cat stretching on a cozy armchair next to a pair of slippers. Paint the armchair first as one large rounded chocolate brown or sage green shape with soft armrests, then add the pair of slippers on the floor just beside it, slightly turned and overlapping, as if just stepped out of.

Stretching poses rely on one long curved spine line running from the top of the head all the way through the tail, so sketch that single curve first before adding any legs or detail, which keeps the whole stretch feeling like one fluid motion rather than separate parts stuck together.

Keep the chair’s texture minimal, just one or two seam lines and a soft shadow where the cushion dips under the chair’s own weight, since too much pattern on the upholstery will compete with the stretching pose. If the stretch looks stiff, lengthen the front legs slightly and drop the chest closer to the cushion.

A cherry red slipper lining is a small warm color note that ties nicely back to the room’s palette.

Palette: Chocolate Brown,Sage Green,Cherry Red,Cream

Give this one a little shop setting: a cat sitting in a wooden box of yarn skeins in a little knitting shop. Paint the box first as a simple rectangular chocolate brown crate, then fill it with rolled yarn skeins painted as overlapping circles in sage green, cherry red and cream, a few with loose ends trailing over the box’s edge.

Comparing sizes keeps this composition working: make the cat noticeably larger than any single yarn skein, since a cat that reads as roughly the same scale as the yarn will look odd rather than charming, while a cat clearly too big for the box it has claimed reads instantly as funny and sweet.

Sit the cat upright in the middle of the yarn, paws tucked, surveying its surroundings with a calm, proprietary look. If the yarn skeins start to look flat and identical, vary just two things, size and color, and leave the circular shape itself consistent across all of them.

A small shop sign or a hint of a shelf behind the box places the scene firmly in a knitting shop without needing much extra detail.

Palette: Chocolate Brown,Sage Green,Cherry Red,Cream

Keep things soft and small with a sleepy kitten wrapped like a burrito in a fleece blanket. Paint the blanket first as one simple rolled cylinder shape in cream or sage green, with the fabric’s edge folded diagonally across one end, leaving only the kitten’s face peeking out at the top.

This is a quick ten minute idea at its simplest, just the wrapped cylinder and a sleepy face, and it works perfectly well that way. For a forty minute version, add a soft fold pattern across the blanket’s length with a few curved shadow lines, and tuck one tiny paw out near the top for extra charm.

Keep the visible face small and relaxed, eyes closed or nearly closed, since a wide awake expression will fight the whole wrapped up, sleepy mood of the piece. If the face looks too alert, soften the eyebrow area above the eyes and drop the ears slightly to the sides.

A single whisker line crossing the fabric’s edge adds a nice bit of realism without any extra effort.

Palette: Cream,Sage Green,Burnt Sienna,Chocolate Brown

Try a slightly different window: a cat gazing out through a cat flap at the snowy garden beyond. Paint the door and flap first, a flat chocolate brown panel with a small square opening, then let the cat’s head and front paws poke through that opening while the rest of its body stays behind the door, out of sight.

This composition relies entirely on a small, confidently placed opening, so measure the flap’s size against the cat’s head before committing to paint, roughly the same width as the head itself, so the framing feels snug and believable rather than oversized.

Beyond the flap, keep the snowy garden simple: a few soft cream mounds of snow, one bare chocolate brown tree branch, nothing more. A too detailed garden will pull focus away from the small framed face, which is really the whole point of this piece.

If painting the flap opening at an angle feels tricky, simplify it to a flat front-on square, which still reads perfectly clearly as a cat door.

Palette: Chocolate Brown,Cream,Icy Blue,Sage Green

Bring a little color and still life into the kitchen with a cat on a windowsill beside a bowl of clementines. Paint the bowl of clementines first, a cluster of small round cadmium orange shapes nested in a simple cream bowl, since getting their round, overlapping shapes settled early makes the rest of the composition easier to build around.

Sit the cat beside the bowl rather than behind it, so both shapes stay clearly readable without overlapping too much. A quick way to judge the spacing is comparing the bowl’s width to the cat’s head, keeping the bowl roughly the same size so neither element dominates the windowsill.

Give each clementine just one small highlight dot and a slightly darker crescent on its lower edge, nothing more, since real citrus fruit reads perfectly well as a simple round shape with minimal shading in this flat style. If the oranges look too flat even with that touch, add one single green leaf stem poking from the top of the bowl for contrast.

A thin icy blue line along the window frame behind them is enough to suggest the cold outside without any extra detail.

Palette: Cadmium Orange,Cream,Sage Green,Icy Blue

Move into the bathroom for something a little different: a Siamese cat perched on the edge of a steaming bath. Paint the bath itself first as a simple white or cream curved rectangle, add a few curling lines of steam rising from the water’s surface, then perch the cat along the rim with its tail wrapped carefully around its paws.

Siamese markings are mostly about contrast rather than detail: paint the body a warm cream, then add chocolate brown only at the ears, face mask, paws and tail tip, keeping every other edge crisp and clean against the pale body. This high contrast pattern is one of the most graphic markings on the list and suits flat gouache shapes especially well.

Balance on a narrow rim is a pose worth checking with a quick comparison: keep the cat’s body low and its paws gathered close together directly under its center, rather than spread wide, which is what actually keeps a cat looking balanced rather than about to topple in.

A single rubber duck floating in the water is a small playful detail worth adding if there is room.

Palette: Cream,Chocolate Brown,Icy Blue,Cherry Red

Go back to folded wool for a cat sleeping on winter jumpers in an open drawer. Paint the drawer first as a simple open rectangular box pulled out from its frame, filled loosely with a few stacked jumpers in sage green and cherry red, their folded shapes slightly crumpled where the cat has clearly been lying on them.

Since the eye level here looks straight down into the open drawer, keep every shape inside it, the jumpers and the cat, drawn from that same slightly top down angle, flattened and a little foreshortened, rather than from the side. That consistent angle is what makes the drawer read as a real container the cat has climbed into.

Curl the cat into the jumpers rather than on top of them, letting its outline follow the crumpled fabric shapes underneath so the two feel like one disturbed pile rather than two separate objects. If the drawer looks too shallow for a curled cat, deepen its front edge slightly with a darker chocolate brown line.

One sleeve left hanging out over the drawer’s front edge adds a nice sense of disorder to the tidy stack.

Palette: Sage Green,Cherry Red,Chocolate Brown,Cream

Return to the kitchen for a quieter moment: a cat watching a small kettle on the stove. Paint the kettle first, a simple rounded chocolate brown body with a curved spout and handle, then add one thin curling line of steam just starting to rise from its spout, as if it is only moments from whistling.

Sit the cat a little distance back from the stove rather than right beside it, ears slightly pinned or eyes narrowed, since cats tend to keep a cautious distance from a kettle that might suddenly whistle, and that small bit of wariness is a nice detail to capture in the pose.

Where this scene can fall flat is a kettle that looks too similar in color to everything around it. Let its chocolate brown stand out clearly against a cream stovetop, and keep the one thin line of steam as the only soft, curved element in an otherwise flat, geometric little scene.

A faint whistle line, just a couple of short curved marks near the spout, can hint that the sound is about to start without drawing anything more literal.

Palette: Chocolate Brown,Cream,Icy Blue,Burnt Sienna

Paint a little scene about painting itself: a cat lying across an open sketchbook right in the middle of a drawing. Paint the sketchbook first, two open cream pages with a half finished sketch visible on one side, a few loose pencil-style lines in chocolate brown, before the cat drapes itself across the rest.

Keep the unfinished sketch on the page simple and a little rough, just enough suggestion of a shape to read as a drawing in progress, since a fully rendered sketch within the painting will pull too much attention away from the cat lying on top of it.

Drape the cat diagonally across both pages so part of its body covers the sketch completely, which is the small joke of the whole piece: the cat has interrupted the work. If the diagonal pose feels unbalanced, anchor it with one paw hanging off the edge of the sketchbook toward the viewer.

A stray pencil resting just beside the sketchbook, pushed slightly out of place, completes the little story of an interrupted session.

If this idea appeals to you, the sketchbook drawing ideas collection has more prompts for filling pages like the one tucked under this cat.

Palette: Cream,Chocolate Brown,Burnt Sienna,Sage Green

Add a tiny, almost comic scale moment: a kitten asleep curled inside a single slipper by the front door. Paint the slipper first as a simple rounded chocolate brown or cherry red shape with a soft lining visible at its open top, then tuck the kitten’s small curled body down inside it, barely peeking over the rim.

Scale is the whole joke in this piece, so compare the kitten’s curled size directly against the slipper’s opening as you sketch, keeping the kitten small enough that it genuinely looks tucked inside rather than simply sitting beside something slipper shaped. A too large kitten will lose the charm instantly.

Keep the second slipper nearby, empty and slightly askew, which helps tell the story of someone who left in a hurry and a kitten who promptly moved in. If the empty slipper looks like it is floating, add a short cast shadow beneath it to settle it on the floor.

A worn doormat texture, just a few short crossed lines in cream and chocolate brown, finishes the entryway setting quickly.

Palette: Chocolate Brown,Cherry Red,Cream,Burnt Sienna

Paint the hallway itself for a cat sitting on the doormat beside a pair of snowy boots. Paint the boots first, two simple chocolate brown shapes standing just inside the door with a dusting of melting white snow clinging to their tops and soles, since getting their slightly uneven, just-come-inside look settled early makes the rest of the composition easier.

Sit the cat upright beside them on the doormat, tail curled neatly around its paws, as if inspecting the new arrivals. Keep its posture alert and a little curious rather than relaxed, which suits a cat greeting someone who has just walked in from the cold.

Melting snow on the boots is a small texture worth getting right: paint it as a few soft irregular white patches rather than a clean, even dusting, with one or two small drip marks running down toward the sole where it has started to melt in the warm house.

A scattering of real snowy footprints leading from the door across the mat is a nice extra detail if there’s room for it.

Add a second species into the mix with a cat cuddled up against a big sleepy dog by the fire. Paint the dog first since it is the larger shape, one large rounded chocolate brown or cream form curled loosely on the floor, then nestle the smaller cat shape into the curve of its body, taking advantage of the dog’s bulk to frame the cat snugly.

Size contrast is the key measuring trick here: make the dog’s head alone roughly as large as the cat’s entire body, which immediately sells the scale difference between the two animals without needing careful proportion work anywhere else.

Keep both animals’ fur texture minimal and matching in style, a few short dry brush strokes along the back and tail of each, so the pair reads as part of the same cozy, flat illustration rather than two different rendering techniques stuck together.

The fireplace glow from earlier in this list works beautifully again here, warming one side of both animals while the rest of the room stays cooler and quieter.

Bring back one more knitted object for a cat napping inside a knitted cat cave set on the windowsill. Paint the cave’s domed shape first, a rounded chocolate brown or sage green knitted shell with a simple ribbed texture of short diagonal strokes, and a round opening at the front where the cat’s head rests, half in and half out.

Knitted texture on a curved dome is slightly trickier than on a flat blanket, so follow the curve of the shape with your strokes rather than keeping them straight across, letting the ribbing bend gently around the rounded form the way real knitting would sit on a round object.

Let only the cat’s face and perhaps one paw show at the cave’s opening, keeping the rest hidden inside the dark interior shadow just past the rim. If the opening looks too flat or paper thin, add a thin darker ring just inside its edge to suggest real depth and thickness to the knitted shell.

A dusting of icy blue frost on the windowsill beside the cave ties this scene back to the cold just outside the glass.

Anyone who enjoys these knitted, windowsill moments might also like the cat junk journal ideas, which cover similar sunny windowsill and yarn themes in a different craft.

Close the list with the most involved scene: a tabby cat sharing a window seat with a girl reading beside it. Paint the girl’s simplified figure first, seated with knees drawn up and a book held open, in soft flat shapes with minimal facial detail, since the whole composition reads better when she is suggested rather than rendered in full portrait detail.

Place the tabby cat snugly against her legs or tucked beside her hip, overlapping her figure slightly so the two clearly belong together in one shared space rather than sitting as two separate subjects placed side by side. A folded sage green throw across her lap gives the cat something soft to settle against.

Balancing two figures in one frame means checking their proportions against each other as you go: the cat’s body length should sit close to the length of her forearm, which keeps the scale between a seated person and a cat looking natural rather than oddly large or small.

For a simpler version, crop the scene to just her knees, the book and the cat, leaving out her upper body entirely for a quicker, equally cozy result.

What to Do Next

Pick whichever scene matches your mood today, whether that is a quick ten minute kitten in a slipper or the fuller window seat scene with two figures, and start with a light pencil sketch on heavy illustration paper before the gouache goes down.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best paint for a cozy cat illustration like these?

Gouache works best, since its flat, opaque finish gives crisp edges and solid matte color without the blending that watercolor or oil naturally invite into a scene.

How do I keep gouache cat fur from looking blotchy?

Let each base shape dry completely before adding stripes, shading or highlights on top, and use less water in your mix so the paint sits flat and opaque in one even layer.

What paper suits gouache cat illustrations best?

Heavy illustration paper or bristol board holds up well, since thick gouache and repeated layers can buckle thinner paper and ruin the crisp edges this style depends on.

How do I make different cats look distinct in the same style?

Vary coat color, ear shape and pose rather than the painting technique itself, keeping the same flat matte approach across every cat so the set still feels like one cohesive collection.

Do I need to draw a pencil sketch before painting in gouache?

A light pencil sketch helps place proportions and poses correctly before committing to paint, especially for stretching or curled poses where the body’s curve needs to feel natural.
