29 Snail Painting Ideas of Garden Snails on Slow Little Adventures

19

Snail painting is the kind of quiet, small subject that rewards patience: a curled shell, a dewy leaf, a slow little moment in the garden. Nobody rushes a snail, and nobody should rush this list either, since every idea here is built to sit well in flat matte gouache shapes with crisp, clean edges.

Below you will find twenty nine separate scenes, from a snail on a strawberry to a snail lost in thought under a dandelion clock. Work through them in order if you like, from the simplest shell to the more detailed little worlds, or just pick whichever one makes you smile and start today.

Start the whole list with a snail climbing a strawberry, since the shapes are simple and the color pairing of red and brown is an easy, happy one in gouache. Sketch the strawberry first as a rounded triangle with a leafy cap, then draw the shell as a tidy spiral sitting against its side, with the body stretched up the curve.

Paint the strawberry in one flat coat of a warm red first, let it dry fully, then add the shell in mushroom brown and the body in a paler cream pink. Keep the seeds as small pale dots added last with the tip of a fine brush, not scratched in, so the edges stay crisp.

Where this goes wrong is usually the spiral, which can turn muddy if you keep going over it wet on wet. If that happens, let the whole shell dry, then repaint the spiral line on top in a cleaner stroke.

No strawberries in your reference folder today: a single raspberry or a cherry works just as well for shape and color.

Move from one snail to a whole little path scene with a snail crossing a garden path after rain, a lovely subject for showing off that glossy, just rained look in flat gouache. Lay the path first as a simple curved band of warm grey across the page, with small flat stones suggested by a few darker patches, not drawn one by one.

Once the path is dry, paint the snail mid stride near the center, its shell a soft blue, its silvery trail a thin pale streak behind it that you paint last with a dry, almost empty brush so the line stays thin and clean.

Eye level matters here: keep your view low, as if you are crouched on the path yourself, which makes the stones in front slightly larger than the ones further back and gives the whole scene depth without extra work.

If grey paper feels flat, warm the path with a touch of soft blue mixed in, which also echoes the overcast light of a rainy afternoon.

Palette: Warm Grey,Soft Blue,Mushroom Brown,Leaf Green

After a path full of stones, rest the eye with a snail resting on a mushroom cap, a simple dome shape that pairs naturally with the round spiral of a shell. Draw the mushroom first as a wide dome on a short stem, then settle the snail on top so its body curls into the curve of the cap rather than sitting stiffly on a flat line.

Paint the cap in a dusty pink or soft brown as one flat shape, add a few small pale dots for the classic spotted look once it dries, then paint the snail in a contrasting leaf green shell so it reads clearly against the cap.

If the dots bleed into the wet cap color, that is the dry time problem: always wait until the base coat is fully matte before adding spots, dots or any fine detail on top.

No pink gouache on hand, mix a little white into your red until it softens into the shade you want.

Palette: Dusty Pink,Leaf Green,White,Mushroom Brown

Give the subject a bit of garden architecture next with a snail on the rim of a flowerpot, since the clean curve of a terracotta pot makes a strong, simple stage for the shell. Draw the pot as a wide trapezoid with a slightly thicker rim at the top, then perch the snail right on that rim edge, half its body over the lip.

Block in the terracotta pot first in a warm orange brown, let it dry, then paint a few leafy stems poking up behind it in leaf green before adding the snail last so it sits cleanly on top of both.

The rim itself is the tricky part, since a wobbly ellipse will flatten the whole pot. If yours comes out uneven, trace around a small coin or lid lightly in pencil first, then paint inside that guide.

A terracotta pot can become a painted ceramic one instead, just swap the orange brown for a soft blue and keep everything else the same.

You Will Need

• small coin or lid to trace the rim

Add a little story of connection with two snails touching antennae, a gentle subject that works well once you have a feel for the basic shell and body shapes from earlier ideas. Draw both shells first, one slightly larger than the other, facing each other with a small gap between, then stretch the antennae of each toward the middle until the tips just meet.

Paint one shell in mushroom brown and the other in soft blue so the pair reads as two distinct characters, keeping both bodies in the same pale cream so they still belong together as a scene.

Measure before you commit to the gap: hold your brush up against the drawing and check the distance between the two heads is no wider than one shell, or the moment of them touching will not read clearly on a small screen.

If you want a cuter pairing, make one shell noticeably smaller to suggest a parent and a young snail meeting instead of two equals.

Bring in some early morning light with a snail on a dewy leaf at dawn, a chance to practice a soft pink glow instead of the usual daylight green. Draw one large leaf filling most of the page, its veins as a few simple lines, with the snail resting near the center where the leaf curves slightly upward.

Paint the leaf in leaf green but warm the edge facing an imaginary low sun with a thin wash of soft pink, since dawn light sits low and colors one side of everything it touches. Add a few small white dots of dew along the leaf edge last, placed with the tip of a brush, never smeared.

If the pink glow looks like a stain rather than light, keep it to a thin band along just one edge of the leaf rather than spreading it across the whole shape.

No dawn reference handy, picture a sunrise photograph in your mind and simply ask which side the light would hit first.

Palette: Leaf Green,Soft Pink,White,Mushroom Brown

Turn the shell itself into the story with a snail with a tiny flower growing on its shell, a whimsical touch that feels right at home in this soft, storybook palette. Draw the shell as your usual spiral, then add one small flower shape, five simple rounded petals, sitting right where the spiral begins to curl inward.

Paint the shell first in mushroom brown and let it dry completely, since this is the idea most likely to go muddy if you rush the flower on top of wet paint. Once dry, paint the flower in soft pink with a small yellow center, using the tip of a fine round brush for each petal.

This is the trick-for-texture idea of the list: for a mossy, lived in shell, dab a slightly darker brown over the base coat with a nearly dry brush before the flower goes on, which breaks up the flat color just enough to look like old, weathered shell.

Close with one tip: always paint tiny details like petals last, after every base shape beneath them is fully dry.

Palette: Mushroom Brown,Soft Pink,Yellow,Leaf Green

Pick up the pace with a snail sliding down a watering can, a fun bit of invented motion that still reads as perfectly natural for a slow little creature. Draw the can first as a simple rounded body with a curved spout and a loop handle, then place the snail on the curve of its side as though gliding down toward the base.

Paint the can in a flat soft blue or galvanized grey, working top to bottom in one even layer, then add the snail last in mushroom brown with its silvery trail curling down the metal behind it.

For the quick ten minute version, keep the can as one flat color with no shading at all. Given forty minutes, add a thin curved highlight along the can’s rounded edge in white to suggest the shine of metal, which lifts the whole painting from flat to dimensional.

If blue paint is not on your palette today, a warm rust color turns this into an old, well loved watering can instead.

Palette: Soft Blue,Mushroom Brown,White,Leaf Green

Keep the weather going with a snail sheltering under a leaf in the rain, a cozy companion to the earlier path scene but told from underneath instead of out in the open. Draw one large leaf tilted like an umbrella over the snail’s head, its stem held almost like a little roof pole, with a few thin diagonal rain lines falling around but not touching the sheltered area.

Paint the leaf in leaf green, the rain lines in a thin, pale soft blue added with a nearly dry brush so they stay light and don’t overpower the scene, and the snail itself in warm mushroom brown tucked safely in the dry patch beneath.

The light source here sits above and slightly behind the leaf, which is what casts a soft shadow underneath the leaf’s edge onto the ground, so paint that shadow as one flat darker green shape rather than leaving the space under the leaf completely blank.

If straight rain lines look too stiff, angle every single one the same direction, since uniform angle reads as rain while mixed angles just read as scribbles.

Palette: Leaf Green,Soft Blue,Mushroom Brown,Cream

Bring the human gardener into the story without ever painting her, just a snail on a garden glove left lying in the grass. Draw the glove first as a simple flat mitten shape with one separated thumb, fingers slightly spread, resting on its back as if just set down.

Paint the glove in a soft pink or faded yellow canvas color, keeping the seams as a few thin darker lines rather than full stitching detail, then add the snail resting across the palm in mushroom brown with its shell as the clear focal point of the whole piece.

Where this one can go wrong is the glove fingers looking like sausages if they are all drawn the same width: taper each finger slightly narrower toward the tip, the same way you would narrow a leaf.

No pink gouache mixed up yet, a simple cream or straw yellow glove works just as sweetly and feels a little more old fashioned.

Palette: Soft Pink,Mushroom Brown,Leaf Green,Cream

Soften things further with a baby snail riding on a big snail, a sweet family moment that leans on the same proportion trick painters use for any parent and young pairing. Draw the larger snail first, full size, then draw the small one on its back using roughly a third of the big shell’s width, since anything larger will read as two equal snails rather than parent and young.

Paint the big snail in mushroom brown and the baby in a lighter cream version of the same color so they clearly belong to the same family, keeping both shells as simple spirals with no extra fuss.

Check the antennae last: the baby’s antennae should be noticeably shorter and thinner than the adult’s, which does more to sell the size difference than the shell size alone.

If you want more warmth in the scene, add a single small flower or leaf beside them in leaf green, low in the corner, never crowding the pair.

Palette: Mushroom Brown,Cream,Leaf Green,Soft Pink

Move indoors briefly with a snail on a stack of old books, a quiet little scene for anyone who loves the cottagecore feel of worn covers and soft colors. Draw three or four books stacked slightly unevenly, varying their widths and the angle each one sits at so the pile feels natural rather than perfectly squared.

Paint each book cover in a different soft color, dusty pink, leaf green, mushroom brown, so the stack reads as a cheerful little still life even before the snail is added, then place the snail climbing across the top edge last.

The trick for crisp book edges in gouache is to paint each cover as one flat block first, let it dry fully, then add a single thin darker line along the spine edge of each to suggest the thickness of the pages.

If flat solid book colors feel too plain, add one small pale rectangle on a cover like a label or bookplate, painted last with a fine brush tip.

If you enjoy small painted still lifes like this, the ideas in journal first page ideas make a nice companion project for the same cozy mood.

Palette: Dusty Pink,Leaf Green,Mushroom Brown,Cream

Add a bit of gentle humor with a snail racing a ladybird, since the joke of the slowest creature in a race only works if both characters are drawn clearly side by side. Draw the snail on one side of the page and the ladybird a short distance ahead on the other, both facing the same direction as if mid race, with a thin painted finish line suggested by a single curved blade of grass.

Paint the ladybird first in a bright red body with small black dots added once dry, then paint the snail in mushroom brown, keeping its trail a short thin line behind it to show just how little ground it has covered compared to its rival.

Keep the eye level low and close, almost ground level, which makes this tiny race feel like an actual big event rather than two bugs on an empty page.

If red and black feel too bold against this palette, soften the ladybird to a dusty red instead so it still reads clearly but sits more gently beside the other colors.

Palette: Bright Red,Mushroom Brown,Leaf Green,Black

Bring in a little vintage charm with a snail exploring a teacup, a subject that pairs naturally with the painted still life mood of the books idea from earlier. Draw the teacup first as a simple rounded shape with a curved handle on one side, then settle the snail along the rim as though peering curiously down inside.

Paint the cup in soft blue with a thin painted pattern, a few small flowers or simple stripes, added only after the base coat is dry, then paint the snail in mushroom brown balanced right on the rim’s edge.

The handle is the part most likely to look stiff or lopsided: draw it as a simple curved loop rather than a rigid shape, and keep its thickness even all the way around so it reads as one smooth line rather than a wobble.

If you enjoy painting small china and kitchen objects like this, the ideas in cooking drawing ideas give you plenty more to try in the same cozy spirit.

Palette: Soft Blue,Mushroom Brown,Soft Pink,Cream

Give the light a real job to do with a snail on a fence post at sunset, a good chance to try a warm glow against the usual cool garden palette. Draw a simple weathered fence post filling most of the page’s height, slightly narrower at the top, with the snail perched near the upper third where it catches the last of the light.

Paint the sky behind the post first in a soft blend of pink and soft blue, light at the top and warmer pink toward the bottom where the sun sits low, then paint the post itself in mushroom brown once the sky is fully dry.

Since the light source is low and warm, add a thin streak of pink along just the top and one side edge of the post and the snail’s shell, leaving the opposite side in plain brown shadow, which instantly reads as late day light rather than flat daylight.

No sunset colors mixed yet, a simple shift from pale yellow to soft pink across the sky will do the same job.

Palette: Soft Pink,Soft Blue,Mushroom Brown,Yellow

Return to the garden floor with a snail beside a wild strawberry plant, a gentler companion to the very first idea since here the snail stays on the ground rather than climbing. Draw a small strawberry plant first, a few simple leaves and one or two small red berries low to the ground, then place the snail beside it at the same level, almost nose to fruit.

Paint the leaves in leaf green as flat shapes with a single vein line each, let them dry, then add the berries in red and the snail in mushroom brown last so it sits clearly in front of the leaves rather than blending into them.

Compare sizes before you paint: a wild strawberry is small, so keep the berries roughly the same size as the snail’s head, not larger, or the scale of the whole scene will feel off.

If red gouache looks too flat alone, warm it very slightly with a touch of soft pink mixed in for a riper, softer berry color.

Palette: Leaf Green,Cadmium Red,Mushroom Brown,Soft Pink

Slow right down with a snail curled up asleep in its shell, a quiet closing note for anyone who wants a calmer subject after the busier scenes above. Draw just the shell itself, large and centered, with only the faintest suggestion of a body tucked at its opening, since a sleeping snail shows almost nothing but shell.

Paint the shell in mushroom brown as one smooth flat shape, then once dry, add the spiral line in a slightly darker brown with a steady, confident stroke rather than lots of small shaky lines.

For the quick ten minute version, stop there with just the shell and spiral on plain cream. Given forty minutes, add a soft bed of leaf green grass or moss beneath it and a few small dots suggesting shade, which turns a simple shape into a full little resting scene.

Close with one tip: a sleeping subject needs no motion lines, no trail, nothing extra, since stillness itself is the whole idea here.

Palette: Mushroom Brown,Leaf Green,Cream,Soft Blue

Pick up the energy again with a snail with a striped yellow shell on moss, a fun pattern exercise after the plain shells used in most earlier ideas. Draw the shell as your usual spiral, then once you paint the base coat in soft yellow and let it dry, add a few curved brown stripes following the spiral’s own curve rather than straight across it.

Paint the moss beneath in a deep leaf green with small clustered dabs of a slightly darker green for texture, applied with a nearly dry brush so the dabs stay separate and don’t blur into one flat mass.

Striped shells go wrong when the stripes ignore the spiral’s curve and end up looking like a stack of straight bands instead: always curve each stripe to match the turn of the shell beneath it.

No yellow gouache ready, a pale cream shell with brown stripes reads just as clearly and keeps the same playful pattern.

Palette: Yellow,Mushroom Brown,Leaf Green,Cream

Head into the vegetable patch with a snail on a lettuce leaf, a classic garden pairing that still deserves its own careful shapes rather than a generic green blob. Draw the lettuce leaf first with a ruffled, wavy edge rather than a smooth outline, since that frilled edge is what makes it read instantly as lettuce and not just any leaf.

Paint the leaf in two shades of leaf green, a lighter tone toward the center and a slightly deeper green near the ruffled edge, blocked in as flat shapes rather than blended, then add the snail last in mushroom brown settled into one of the leaf’s folds.

If the ruffled edge comes out looking jagged and sharp, round off each little wave slightly as you paint it, since lettuce folds are soft curves, never pointed zigzags.

A cabbage leaf makes an easy swap if lettuce feels fiddly, since it uses the same ruffled edge idea but on a rounder, simpler overall shape.

Palette: Leaf Green,Mushroom Brown,Dark Green,Cream

Try a small reflection trick with a snail looking at its reflection in a puddle, a nice perspective exercise since the eye needs to read two snails as one subject and its mirror image. Draw the snail on solid ground above an oval puddle shape, then draw a second, upside down version of the same snail inside the puddle’s oval, slightly softer in color since reflections always sit a touch paler than the real thing.

Paint the real snail in full mushroom brown and leaf green first, let it dry, then paint the reflected version in the same colors thinned with a touch more white so it reads as a watery echo rather than a second identical snail.

Keep the puddle’s oval shape simple and flat in a pale soft blue grey, with the reflection sitting inside it as though painted on the water’s surface, not as a separate scene below the ground line.

If two snails side by side feels busy for one small painting, simplify the reflection down to just the shell shape rather than the whole body, which still reads clearly as a reflection.

Palette: Mushroom Brown,Leaf Green,Soft Blue,White

Go tall with a snail climbing a foxglove stem, a lovely chance to practice a long vertical shape after so many rounder subjects on this list. Draw the stem first running nearly the full height of the page, with several bell shaped flowers hanging along one side from top to bottom, then add the snail gripping the stem about a third of the way up.

Paint the stem and leaves in leaf green first, then the bell flowers in soft pink with tiny darker pink dots added once dry inside each bell, before the snail goes on last in mushroom brown.

Measure the flowers before you paint them: foxglove bells get noticeably smaller toward the top of the stem, so if yours are all the same size the whole plant will look unnatural and stiff.

If a full foxglove feels like too much stem, cut the plant off partway down the page and let the stem run off the top edge instead, which still reads as tall and climbing.

Palette: Leaf Green,Soft Pink,Mushroom Brown,Dark Pink

If you like painting tall garden flowers like this, the ideas in iris painting cover more purple and pink garden blooms worth a try next.

Move to the water’s edge with a snail on a pebble by a stream, a calmer landscape moment with just enough background to feel like a real place. Draw a cluster of a few rounded pebbles in the lower half of the page, with a simple curved band of soft blue water running behind them, then place the snail on top of the largest pebble.

Paint the water first in soft blue with a few thin white streaks for movement, let it dry, then paint the pebbles in varied warm greys and browns so they don’t all read as one flat mass, finishing with the snail in mushroom brown on top.

Vary each pebble’s shape and size as you draw them, since a cluster of identical ovals reads as fake, while a mix of rounder and flatter stones feels like something actually found by a stream.

No real streamside reference to hand, a photograph of any rocky riverbank will give you enough pebble variety to copy from.

Palette: Soft Blue,Warm Grey,Mushroom Brown,White

Focus in close with a snail making a silvery trail across a stone, a subject built entirely around one single flat stone shape and the mark left behind on it. Draw one large, smooth stone filling most of the page, with the snail positioned near one edge and a long curved trail stretching back across the stone’s surface behind it.

Paint the stone first in a flat warm grey, let it dry completely, then paint the snail in mushroom brown and the trail last in a very pale, almost white soft blue, using a dry brush dragged lightly across the surface so the line looks shiny rather than solid and flat.

This is the idea to practice the dry brush trick properly: load just a little paint, blot most of it off on scrap paper, then drag the brush in one smooth curve so the trail has texture and catches the light like real slime does.

If the trail still looks too heavy, go back over it once with a clean, barely damp brush to soften and thin the line.

Palette: Warm Grey,Mushroom Brown,Pale Blue,White

Add a storybook touch with a snail under a tiny paper umbrella, a charming little prop that gives the shell a rival dome shape to sit beside. Draw a small open umbrella first, its canopy a simple fan of curved triangle segments in alternating colors, with the snail standing just beneath it, dry and sheltered.

Paint the umbrella segments in alternating soft pink and leaf green, working one flat segment at a time and letting each dry before painting the one beside it so the colors stay crisp rather than bleeding together at the seams.

Keep the umbrella’s handle as one thin, simple curved line rather than a thick shape, since a slim handle reads as delicate paper rather than a heavy garden parasol.

If painting alternating segments feels fiddly, simplify to just two colors split straight down the middle of the canopy instead of several thin wedges.

Palette: Soft Pink,Leaf Green,Mushroom Brown,Cream

Build a whole little woodland world with a snail visiting a fairy ring of mushrooms, the most detailed scene on this list and a good one to save for when you feel confident with the simpler shapes above. Draw a loose circle of several small mushrooms around the edge of the page, varying their height and cap angle slightly, with the snail positioned inside the ring as though it just wandered in.

Paint the mushrooms in a mix of dusty pink and soft brown caps on pale stems, finishing each one fully before moving to the next, then add a soft shadow beneath each cap in a slightly darker tone so they feel grounded rather than floating.

For the quick version, keep the ring to just four or five mushrooms with no extra background. Given forty minutes, add scattered small leaves or a few blades of grass around the circle’s edge to make the clearing feel fuller and more alive.

Close with one tip: keep the ring loose and slightly uneven rather than a perfect circle, since real fairy rings in the grass are never quite symmetrical.

Palette: Dusty Pink,Mushroom Brown,Leaf Green,Cream

Bring spring back in with a snail on a blossoming apple twig, a pretty subject that pairs a thin woody branch with soft clusters of pale flowers. Draw one simple curved twig running diagonally across the page, with small clusters of five petaled blossoms along its length, then place the snail gripping the twig near the middle where it bends.

Paint the twig in mushroom brown first, then the blossom petals in soft pink with tiny yellow centers added once everything else is fully dry, finishing with the snail last so its shell sits clearly against the pale flowers behind it.

Vary the blossom clusters so they don’t all face the same direction: some open petals facing the viewer, others turned slightly to the side, which keeps the whole branch from looking like a repeated stamp pattern.

No apple reference handy, cherry blossom or any simple five petal spring flower works just as well on the same twig shape, and the ideas in cherry painting ideas have more of that same soft spring color if you want to keep going after this one.

Palette: Mushroom Brown,Soft Pink,Yellow,Cream

Bring the garden indoors for a moment with a snail on a windowsill beside a plant, a cozy little interior scene that still keeps the same simple shapes used throughout this list. Draw a flat windowsill ledge across the lower third of the page, a small potted plant to one side, and the snail resting on the open stretch of sill beside it.

Paint the windowsill in a warm cream or soft grey, the pot in terracotta, and the plant leaves in leaf green, finishing each shape fully before adding the next so none of the colors bleed into one another along their edges.

Since the light here likely comes from one side through the window glass, keep that side of the snail’s shell and the plant leaves a touch brighter, and the opposite side slightly deeper in tone, which is enough to suggest window light without painting the glass itself.

If a full plant feels like too much, a single simple leaf or two in a small jar of water gives the same cozy windowsill feeling with far less to paint.

Palette: Cream,Terracotta,Leaf Green,Mushroom Brown

Return to the tool shed one more time with a snail on a garden trowel handle, a nice echo of the earlier glove idea but with a harder, more angular shape to balance the soft curves of the shell. Draw the trowel lying flat, its metal scoop at one end and a simple rounded wooden handle at the other, with the snail resting across the handle near its widest point.

Paint the metal scoop first in a cool grey with a thin streak of white along one edge for shine, then paint the wooden handle in warm mushroom brown, finishing with the snail last in a contrasting leaf green shell so it stands out clearly against the brown wood.

Keep the metal scoop’s edge crisp and slightly angular rather than rounding it off like the handle, since that contrast between hard metal and soft wood and an even softer snail is what makes the whole piece interesting to look at.

No trowel in easy reference, a simple garden fork handle works the same way and keeps the same soft wood and hard metal contrast.

Palette: Mushroom Brown,Cool Grey,Leaf Green,White

Close the whole list on something delicate with a snail admiring a dandelion clock, a lovely quiet final image after so many busier garden scenes. Draw the dandelion as a round puffball head on a thin stem, built from many short, fine strokes radiating out from the center rather than one solid circle, with the snail sitting below it looking up.

Paint the stem in leaf green first, then the puffball head in soft white or pale cream using lots of small quick strokes with the tip of a fine brush, finishing with the snail in mushroom brown settled at the base once everything above it is fully dry.

If the puffball ends up looking like a solid blob instead of fluffy seeds, that almost always means too few strokes were used: keep adding short fine lines around the edge until the whole shape reads as light and airy rather than dense.

No fine round brush available, the flat edge of a small flat brush dabbed lightly can suggest the same soft, feathery texture with a little less control needed.

What to Do Next

Pick whichever snail caught your eye first, set out a small palette of mushroom brown, leaf green and soft blue, and start on a piece of smooth paper you can finish today. Keep the shapes simple, let each one dry before adding the next, and let the snail take its time, the way it always does.

Frequently Asked Questions

What paint works best for snail painting in this flat, matte style?

Gouache works best, since it dries to a flat, matte finish and covers evenly in one or two coats. Acrylic can give a similar look if thinned only slightly and applied in clean, separate layers.

How do you paint a snail shell so the spiral looks neat?

Paint the shell as one flat base color first and let it dry fully before adding the spiral line on top. Use one steady, confident stroke rather than several short shaky ones for a clean curve.

What colors suit a garden snail painting?

Mushroom brown, leaf green and soft blue form a calm, natural base, with a little soft pink added for warmth. These colors echo real garden tones without needing to mix dozens of shades.

Do I need special paper for gouache snail paintings?

Smooth illustration paper or board works best, since it keeps edges crisp rather than letting paint soak in unevenly. Heavier watercolor paper also works if it has a smooth, not rough, surface.

How do I keep gouache colors from looking muddy next to each other?

Let each shape dry fully before painting the one beside it, since wet edges touching is the main cause of muddy color. Working one flat shape at a time, in order, keeps every edge clean.
