34 Orange Painting Ideas From Seville Groves to Sunny Breakfast Tables

35

An orange painting is one of the quickest ways to fill a page with sunshine, and that is exactly why this fruit shows up on so many kitchen prints and tea towels. The round shape is forgiving, the color does half the work before you even pick up a brush, and a single piece of fruit can carry a whole scene when you set it on a windowsill, a market crate or a breakfast table.

Below you will find thirty four ideas that keep that citrus mood going from a Seville street lined with trees to a girl floating on an orange slice pool float. Each one is sized for a single sitting, built for gouache, and ready to paint in the same sunny, flat-shape style so the whole set feels like one happy collection on your wall.

Start with the street itself, since a Seville street lined with orange trees lives or dies on its perspective. Sketch two converging lines in pencil for the pavement, pick an eye level about a third up the page, and let the buildings on either side shrink as they march toward that point, with the orange trees planted in a simple repeating row along the curb.

Block in flat cream and soft blue walls first, then paint the trees as rounded leaf-green canopies dotted with small orange circles, keeping every dot roughly the same size so the row reads as consistent trees rather than random fruit. Save the cobalt blue accent for shutters or a tiled step, since one note of strong blue against all that orange makes the whole street feel sunlit.

If the street looks flat, add one shadow shape under each tree canopy in a deeper green, which anchors them to the ground instantly. Swap a ruler for a folded paper edge if you do not have one handy, it still gives you a straight perspective line.

Paint the nearest tree with the most detail and let the far ones simplify into pure color blocks, that single change sells the depth of the whole street.

Following that grove mood, a girl on a ladder picking oranges brings a human moment into the citrus scene. Draw the ladder first as two simple diagonal lines leaning into the tree, then place the figure a little above the middle of the ladder so her arm can reach naturally toward one orange painted slightly larger than the rest, since the eye always goes to the biggest shape in a group.

Paint the tree as a loose cloud of leaf green behind her, add the oranges as flat circles scattered through it, then build her dress and skin tone in flat gouache blocks before adding simple facial features last with a fine brush.

Hands and feet on a ladder often go wrong when they are drawn too small, so measure her foot against a ladder rung before you paint and make sure it comfortably covers at least half of it.

No model handy, just hold your own arm up at that angle in a mirror and sketch from what you see, it is the fastest proportion fix there is.

From the grove, the fruit now travels, so a crate of oranges on the back of a vintage truck turns the scene into a little story. Block the truck body in as one simple rounded rectangle shape with flat cream or faded blue paint, keeping the wheels as two solid dark circles, then paint the wooden crate sitting in the open back as a grid of thin tan lines over a warm brown base.

Fill the crate with overlapping orange circles, painting the front row a touch larger and brighter than the ones behind so the pile reads as stacked rather than flat. Finish with the truck’s chrome details and a shadow underneath to ground it on the road.

This idea works at two speeds: in ten minutes, paint just the crate and a few oranges as a close-up vignette, and in forty minutes, build the whole truck with its cab, windows and a hint of road behind it.

Try the same truck next time loaded with lemons or a mix of citrus for a different print in the same series.

Zoom right in now, because a blood orange cut in half on a marble counter is all about that dramatic interior color. Paint the outer peel first as a flat orange circle, leave a thin cream ring for the pith, then load your brush with a deep magenta-red for the flesh and work outward from the center in small wedge shapes that fan out like a sunburst.

Let the counter underneath stay a pale cream or soft grey with a few thin diagonal veins painted in a quick dry brush stroke, since too many veins will fight with the fruit for attention. Add one small shadow under the orange half to seat it on the surface.

If the red flesh looks muddy, it usually means too much water was mixed into the gouache, so keep this layer thick and opaque and let the color stay bold rather than translucent.

No deep red on hand, mix cadmium orange with a touch of alizarin crimson and you will get a close blood orange hue.

Palette: Cadmium Orange,Alizarin Crimson,Cream,Soft Grey

Carrying that juicy mood to the table, a glass of fresh orange juice at breakfast is a cheerful close-up still life. Paint the glass as a simple flat shape with a slightly lighter orange band near the top to suggest the liquid’s surface, then add two or three thin curved highlight lines in white gouache or a white gel pen along one side to show the glass catching light.

Sit the glass beside a plain cream plate or a folded napkin painted in one flat shape, and tuck in a single orange slice resting against the glass for scale and color repetition.

Highlights are the part most likely to go wrong here, since too many scattered white marks make glass look cracked rather than shiny. Keep your highlight to one clean curved stroke and one small dot, nothing more.

This is a true ten minute painting if you keep it to just the glass and plate, or stretch to forty minutes by adding a sunny windowsill background behind it.

You Will Need

• white gel pen

Staying at the breakfast table, a jar of marmalade with toast is a cozy still life that leans on texture more than detail. Paint the jar as a simple rounded rectangle with a flat lid shape, then fill the inside with small irregular orange peel pieces suspended in a slightly transparent amber wash so the marmalade looks chunky rather than smooth.

Beside it, paint a slice of toast as a flat tan square with a slightly darker crust edge, and a few dabs of marmalade spread across the top using the dry brush technique, dragging a nearly dry brush lightly over the surface so the paint catches only the raised texture.

The jar’s glass can look too solid if you paint it as one flat block, so leave a thin sliver of white paper unpainted along one edge to suggest glass catching light.

If gouache feels too opaque for the jar’s transparency, thin it slightly with water for just that one layer.

Palette: Amber Orange,Cream,Raw Umber,Soft Grey

Look at a real jar of marmalade in good light before you paint the peel pieces, the irregular shapes read far more convincingly than evenly spaced dots.

Moving from the jar to the fruit itself, clementines in a red net bag are a fun exercise in pattern over a round form. Paint the bag’s contents first as a cluster of overlapping orange circles, varying the sizes slightly so the group feels natural rather than stacked in a grid.

Once that layer is dry, add the red net on top as a simple diagonal crosshatch of thin lines painted with a fine brush, letting the orange show clearly through every gap. Finish with a small knot shape at the top where the bag gathers.

Measure before you start by counting how many clementines will actually fit without crowding the page, four or five circles is usually the sweet spot for a single sitting piece. Too many and the net pattern gets fiddly and small.

If a fine brush feels tricky for the net lines, a white or red gel pen gives the same crisp line with more control.

You Will Need

• white or red gel pen

Palette: Cadmium Orange,Poppy Red,Cream,Sap Green

From the net bag to a softer still life, a bowl of tangerines on a winter windowsill plays with light coming from one direction. Decide where the window light sits, usually from the side, and paint the bowl of tangerines with one side of each fruit left slightly lighter where the light hits and the opposite side deepened with a touch of raw umber mixed into the orange.

Paint the bowl as a simple curved shape in cream or soft blue, then add a loose suggestion of a frosty windowpane behind it using thin diagonal cobalt blue lines over white, keeping the background mostly empty so the fruit stays the star.

Flat lighting is the easiest trap here, so commit to one light side and one shadow side on every tangerine rather than painting them all evenly bright.

Try this scene again next season with the same bowl filled with plums or figs to build a set of windowsill paintings through the year.

Palette: Cadmium Orange,Raw Umber,Cream,Cobalt Blue

Zooming into a smaller citrus now, kumquats on a leafy branch reward a steady hand more than a big brush. Sketch a single curving branch across the page first, then paint the leaves as simple pointed oval shapes in two shades of green so the branch has some depth, before adding the kumquats as small elongated ovals rather than perfect circles, since their oval shape is what makes them read as kumquats rather than tiny oranges.

Finish with a thin darker green line down the center of each leaf for a vein, and a small highlight dot on each fruit.

If this is your first time painting small fruit in a cluster, work from the back of the branch forward, painting the furthest kumquats first so the closer ones can overlap on top of them cleanly.

Round brushes smaller than you normally use will help keep these little ovals crisp, so size down a brush size from your usual still life work.

Palette: Cadmium Orange,Sap Green,Olive Green,Cream

From fruit on the branch to fruit on a plate, an orange cake topped with candied slices is a satisfying dessert subject with a soft, warm palette. Paint the cake as a simple domed shape in a warm golden tan, adding a slightly darker edge around the base where it meets the plate to suggest its weight.

Once that base layer is dry, paint the candied orange slices on top as flat translucent-looking circles in a brighter orange with visible segment lines radiating from the center, and let a few drips of glaze run down the cake’s side in thin curved amber lines.

The segment lines are the trickiest part, so draw them lightly in pencil first before committing in paint, radiating evenly from a center point rather than freehand, which keeps every slice looking the same.

No amber gouache on hand, mix a little yellow into your orange for a convincing glaze color. For more dessert and food inspiration in this same cheerful style, browse these food doodle ideas for quick companion pieces.

Palette: Golden Tan,Cadmium Orange,Amber Orange,Cream

Keeping that cozy kitchen thread going, orange slices drying on a string turns a simple pattern into a charming hanging piece. Draw one gently sagging string across the page first, then paint each orange slice as a flat circle with a thin cream pith ring and radiating segment lines, spacing them evenly along the string with small gaps between each one.

Vary the slices slightly in tone, some a touch more golden and dried-looking, others brighter and fresher, which keeps the row from feeling mechanical. Add a tiny clip or knot shape where each slice attaches to the string.

Working a quick version, paint just three slices close together for a ten minute piece, while a forty minute version can fill the whole string from edge to edge with a soft shadow behind each slice for depth.

Vary it again next time with lemon or lime slices mixed in for a fuller citrus garland.

Palette: Cadmium Orange,Golden Tan,Cream,Raw Umber

Bringing a person back into the fruit now, a girl peeling an orange in one long spiral is a lovely close-up hand study. Paint her hands first as simple rounded shapes holding the orange, then build the peel as one continuous curling ribbon shape unwinding from the fruit, painted in flat orange with the inner white pith side shown as a thin cream strip along one edge of the ribbon.

Keep her face and body loose or even just suggested at the edge of the frame, since the real subject here is the hands and the spiraling peel, which should take up most of the space.

Hands are the part everyone worries about, so compare her thumb to the width of the orange before you paint it, a thumb is usually about a third the width of the fruit it holds, which keeps the scale believable.

If the spiral peel looks stiff, loosen your wrist and paint it in one continuous curved stroke rather than several short ones.

Palette: Cadmium Orange,Cream,Naples Yellow,Soft Grey

Widening out again, an orange grove at sunset with a dog brings warm light and a quiet companion into the scene. Decide first where the sun sits low on the horizon, since everything else follows from that: paint a warm gradient sky in orange and soft yellow behind the rows of trees, then silhouette the nearest tree trunks and the dog in a flat dark shape against that glow.

Paint the grove rows receding into the distance using the same converging perspective trick as a street scene, shrinking each tree slightly as it goes back, and dot a few oranges only on the nearest trees where detail still reads clearly.

Backlit scenes often go flat when the sky and trees end up the same value, so keep your sky noticeably lighter and warmer than every silhouette shape sitting in front of it.

If gouache feels too opaque for a smooth sky gradient, wet the paper first and drop in color so it blends more like a wash.

Palette: Cadmium Orange,Naples Yellow,Raw Umber,Sap Green

Settling back indoors, a basket of oranges on a straw chair is a cheerful cottage still life built from two contrasting textures. Paint the chair’s woven seat first using short overlapping horizontal and diagonal strokes in warm tan, letting the weave pattern stay loose rather than perfectly even, then add the chair’s simple curved frame around it.

Once dry, paint the woven basket sitting on top using the same cross-hatch technique in a slightly darker tan, and fill it generously with overlapping orange circles that spill just slightly over the basket’s rim for a relaxed, full look.

The weave pattern can turn busy fast, so limit your strokes to two directions only and keep the basket and chair in close tan tones so they do not compete with the bright oranges for attention.

No straw-toned paint on hand, mix yellow ochre with a touch of your orange for a convincing woven tan.

Palette: Cadmium Orange,Yellow Ochre,Raw Umber,Cream

Pausing on something smaller and softer, orange blossom on a branch with a bee is a delicate botanical study that still fits in one sitting. Paint the branch as a thin curving line first, then build each blossom from five simple rounded white petals around a small yellow center, working one flower at a time rather than all the petals across the branch at once.

Add a few leaf shapes in leaf green tucked behind the blossoms, then finish with one small bee painted last as a tiny oval body with thin dark stripes, placed hovering near a single flower so it reads as the focal point of the whole piece.

Eye level matters even in a close botanical study, so place the bee slightly above or beside a blossom rather than dead center, which gives the composition a more natural, caught in motion feel.

If white gouache looks chalky on the petals, add the faintest touch of your cream to warm it slightly.

Palette: Titanium White,Naples Yellow,Sap Green,Cream

For more flower painting practice in this same gentle gouache approach, these gouache flower ideas cover plenty of other blossoms worth trying.

Back to the table now, orange and rosemary sparkling water in a glass is a refreshing subject that leans on bubbles and a sprig of herb for interest. Paint the glass first as a tall simple shape, filling it with a pale orange-tinted wash for the water, then add a few small white gouache or gel pen dots rising through the liquid to suggest bubbles clustered mostly near the orange slice and the glass walls.

Tuck a single orange slice against the inside of the glass and lay a small rosemary sprig across the rim, painted as a few thin green lines with short needle-like leaves branching off.

Bubbles painted too evenly across the whole glass look like polka dots rather than fizz, so cluster most of them near the slice and the rim and leave the middle of the glass mostly clear.

This is an easy ten minute piece if you keep it to the glass alone, or forty minutes with a full table setting behind it.

You Will Need

• white gel pen

Palette: Cadmium Orange,Sap Green,Cream,Soft Grey

Simplifying things again, orange segments on a plate with mint is a clean, graphic still life built from repeated shapes. Paint a flat white or cream plate as a simple circle first, then arrange the orange segments in a loose fan across it, each segment a curved triangle shape with a slightly rounded outer edge and a thin cream line down the center where the membrane sits.

Tuck two or three mint leaves among the segments, painted as simple pointed shapes in a cooler green than you have used elsewhere in the piece, which helps them stand apart from the warm orange.

If the segments start looking identical and stiff, vary their angles slightly as you fan them across the plate rather than lining them up in a perfect row, real segmented fruit never sits that neatly.

One concrete tip for today, paint the plate’s shadow before the segments go on top, it is far easier to judge the fruit’s placement against a plate that already looks grounded.

Palette: Cadmium Orange,Cream,Mint Green,Soft Grey

Stepping outside again, an orange tree in a terracotta pot by a blue door pairs warm and cool tones in one tidy composition. Paint the door first as a large flat cobalt blue rectangle filling most of the background, since that bold color block is what makes the whole piece sing, then add the terracotta pot in front of it as a simple trapezoid shape in warm brick orange.

Build the tree above the pot as a rounded leaf-green canopy with several orange circles nestled into it, keeping the canopy shape loose and slightly irregular rather than a perfect circle so it reads as a living plant.

Flat color blocks like this door can look unbalanced if the pot sits dead center, so shift it slightly left or right of the door’s middle for a more natural still life feel.

No cobalt on hand, any strong blue works, the contrast with the orange fruit is what matters most.

Palette: Cobalt Blue,Terracotta,Sap Green,Cadmium Orange

From the garden back to the kitchen, candied orange peel dipped in chocolate is a small, satisfying treat to paint with strong contrast. Paint each strip of peel as a simple curved orange shape first, then dip the lower half of each strip in flat dark brown chocolate, leaving a clean straight or slightly wavy line where the two colors meet.

Arrange several strips scattered loosely across the page or resting on a small plate, varying the angle of each one so they look like they just fell there rather than lined up in a row.

The chocolate dip line is the trickiest edge here, so paint the orange peel first, let it dry completely, then paint the chocolate on top with confident single strokes rather than trying to build it up slowly, which tends to create a muddy, blurred border instead of a crisp one.

Swap milk chocolate brown for a darker cocoa if you want more contrast against the bright peel.

Palette: Cadmium Orange,Dark Chocolate Brown,Cream,Naples Yellow

Adding a pet into the citrus pile now, a cat sleeping among oranges is a cozy, soft-edged scene built around one curled shape. Paint the cat first as a single rounded, tucked-in silhouette with its tail wrapped close to its body, using flat color with just a few short dry brush strokes along the edge of the fur to break up the hard outline without adding fussy detail.

Once the cat is dry, nestle a handful of orange circles around it, letting a few overlap slightly onto the cat’s body so it genuinely looks curled up among the fruit rather than simply placed beside it.

A sleeping cat can end up looking stiff if every curve is too smooth, so use that dry brush edge along the back and tail to suggest fur texture without drawing individual hairs.

If orange and cat fur colors are too close in tone, choose a grey or tabby brown cat so the fruit still pops clearly against it.

Palette: Soft Grey,Cadmium Orange,Raw Umber,Cream

Switching to something you might find in a bathroom, orange soap wrapped in printed paper is a small design-forward still life. Paint the soap bar as a simple rounded rectangle in a soft orange, then wrap one corner of it in a flat paper shape painted in cream with a tiny repeating pattern, a few small dots or thin stripes drawn on last with a fine brush or gel pen, to suggest a printed citrus label.

Leave one edge of the soap bar peeking out from the paper unwrapped, which makes it read instantly as a wrapped product rather than a plain block of color.

The paper fold is where this idea can go wrong, since a flat sheet without any crease looks pasted on rather than wrapped. Add one simple diagonal fold line in a slightly darker cream to suggest the paper turning a corner around the soap.

No gel pen for the pattern, a fine paintbrush loaded with thin paint works just as well for small dots.

You Will Need

• white or fine gel pen

Palette: Soft Orange,Cream,Cobalt Blue,Soft Grey

Returning to the kitchen counter, a citrus juicer with cut halves is a simple object study built from one clear light source. Paint the juicer itself as a flat ridged dome shape in cream or pale grey, deciding first where the light falls so you can leave one side of the dome lighter and deepen the opposite side slightly with a touch of grey mixed in.

Arrange two or three orange halves around the base, cut side up, each painted with the same sunburst segment pattern used for other sliced citrus in this list, and let one half sit slightly tilted against the juicer’s base for a natural, just-used feel.

Flat objects like this can look two dimensional without that single consistent light side, so commit to it across both the juicer and the orange halves rather than lighting each piece separately.

If your juicer reference looks too complicated, simplify it down to the ridged dome and a flat base, the full handle and bowl are not necessary for a strong painting.

Palette: Cream,Cadmium Orange,Soft Grey,Naples Yellow

Building a fuller plate now, a citrus salad with fennel mixes round orange segments with thin pale fennel slices for contrast. Paint the plate and a loose circle of mixed orange segments first, using both regular orange and a few deeper blood orange pieces for variety, then layer thin pale green fennel slices across the top, each one a simple curved sliver with a faint line pattern to suggest its layered texture.

Finish with a scattering of small dark seeds or herb flecks across the top using the tip of a fine brush, which adds just enough detail to make the salad look freshly tossed.

The fennel can disappear visually if it is too close in tone to the plate, so keep it a cool pale green rather than cream so it reads clearly against both the plate and the orange segments.

Next time, vary this salad with pomegranate seeds swapped in for the fennel for a different color combination in the same composition.

Palette: Cadmium Orange,Alizarin Crimson,Pale Fennel Green,Cream

Taking the citrus palette outdoors, a tangerine-colored beach umbrella is a simple graphic shape against a wide open sky and sand. Paint the umbrella’s canopy first as a flat dome divided into alternating tangerine and cream triangle panels, radiating from a central point, then add the pole as one thin straight line down to the sand.

Keep the background extremely simple, a flat pale blue sky and a warm cream sand shape meeting in one horizontal line, so all the visual interest sits in the umbrella’s pattern rather than a busy beach scene.

Eye level barely matters here since the umbrella sits low and close, but keep the horizon line placed in the lower third of the page so the umbrella has plenty of sky to stand against and does not feel cramped at the top.

If painting even triangle panels feels tricky, lightly pencil a center point and ruler lines radiating out before committing in paint.

Palette: Cadmium Orange,Cream,Soft Sky Blue,Warm Sand

For more sunny seasonal scenes in this same bright, simple shape style, these summer painting ideas are worth a look too.

Back to a refreshing table subject, a pitcher of water with orange slices is built around a clear glass shape filled with floating fruit. Paint the pitcher first as a tall simple silhouette, leaving the inside mostly a pale blue-tinted wash to suggest water, then drop in two or three orange slice circles at different heights inside the pitcher as if they are floating, each with its segment lines still visible through the water.

Add a thin white gouache highlight line down one side of the pitcher’s glass body and a small pool of water or a few droplets at the base to ground it on the table.

Floating fruit can look like it is pasted flat onto the glass if every slice is the same size, so make the slices nearer the bottom of the pitcher slightly smaller to suggest they sit further back in the water.

No pale blue for the water wash, a very thin grey works just as well to suggest clear liquid.

Palette: Soft Sky Blue,Cadmium Orange,Cream,Soft Grey

Bringing the fruit’s color onto a figure now, a girl in an orange dress holding an orange plays with matching the fruit to her clothing. Paint her dress first as one bold, flat orange shape filling most of the figure, choosing a slightly different shade from the orange she holds so the two don’t blend into one shapeless mass, then build her face, hair and hands in simple flat color blocks.

Place the orange she holds at roughly chest height, slightly off to one side rather than dead center, since that small shift makes the pose look more natural and gives the composition somewhere for the eye to land.

Compare the size of the orange to her hand before committing, it should sit comfortably within her palm with her fingers just wrapping around the edge, not swallowing the whole hand.

If two close shades of orange feel risky, add a thin cream or cobalt outline around the fruit to separate it clearly from the dress.

Palette: Cadmium Orange,Terracotta,Cream,Cobalt Blue

Returning to packing crates with more design detail this time, a Sicilian orange crate with a vintage label is a fun lettering-free pattern exercise. Paint the wooden crate as a simple flat box shape with thin plank lines, then dedicate the front panel to a flat colored label shape, built from a cream background with a bold cobalt blue border and a simple illustrated orange or sun motif painted in the center rather than any text.

Fill the crate itself with a tidy stacked row of oranges peeking over the top edge, keeping them evenly sized since this crate is meant to look like a neat shipping container rather than a casual overflowing basket.

Vintage labels often fail when the central motif gets too detailed, so keep your orange or sun shape bold and simple, two or three flat colors at most, exactly like the rest of the piece.

Try this idea again with a lemon or fig themed label for a matching set of vintage fruit crates.

Palette: Raw Umber,Cream,Cobalt Blue,Cadmium Orange

A softer wrapped subject now, mandarins wrapped in tissue paper leans on translucent layered color. Paint the mandarin itself first as a solid flat orange circle, let it dry fully, then paint a loose, semi-transparent tissue paper shape over the top in a very thin wash of cream or pale orange, letting the fruit’s color show through clearly underneath.

Add a few simple fold lines in the tissue using slightly darker thin strokes where the paper creases around the fruit’s curve, and twist the paper’s edges into small pointed shapes at the top where it gathers.

Getting the tissue to look sheer rather than opaque is the real challenge, so always paint it as the very last layer over dry fruit, using much more water in your gouache mix than usual, just enough pigment to tint the white paper without hiding the orange completely.

No tissue-weight wash technique yet, practice the thin layer on scrap paper first until the orange shows through softly.

Palette: Cadmium Orange,Cream,Soft Grey,Naples Yellow

Back to dessert for a showier bake, an orange tart with meringue builds texture through peaks and swirls rather than flat shapes. Paint the tart base and pastry shell first as a simple flat circle in warm golden tan, then fill the center with a smooth orange curd layer in bright cadmium orange.

Once dry, add the meringue on top using small overlapping peaked shapes in white gouache, each peak painted with a slightly dragged, upward brush stroke to suggest the soft swirled texture, then finish with a few toasted golden-brown tips flicked onto the highest points of the peaks.

Meringue often ends up looking like a flat white blob rather than piped texture, so vary the size of your peaks across the tart and make sure a few peaks overlap each other rather than sitting in a perfectly even row.

If white gouache feels too stark against the orange, warm it slightly with a touch of cream before painting the peaks.

Palette: Golden Tan,Cadmium Orange,Titanium White,Raw Umber

Zooming out to a whole corner of a room, a kitchen shelf styled in orange ties several smaller objects into one composition. Paint the shelf itself first as a simple flat horizontal plank, then arrange a small row of orange-themed objects along it, a jar of marmalade, a small potted citrus plant and a stack of cream plates, each painted as its own simple flat shape so the shelf reads as a tidy collection rather than a cluttered mess.

Vary the height of each object slightly so the silhouette along the top of the shelf has some rhythm, tall jar, low plate stack, medium plant, rather than three equal heights in a row.

Shelves like this can feel flat without one shadow shape cast by each object onto the shelf surface, so add a small soft shadow beneath every item once it is dry.

Keep this version to three objects for a single sitting piece, and save a longer shelf full of citrus clutter for a future painting day.

Palette: Cadmium Orange,Cream,Sap Green,Raw Umber

Bringing wildlife back into the grove, a bird sitting in an orange tree pairs a simple bird silhouette with the same leafy canopy used earlier in this list. Paint the tree’s leaf-green canopy and a few scattered orange circles first, then add the bird perched on one of the branches as a simple rounded body shape with a small pointed beak and tail, choosing a color that contrasts clearly against the green, a soft blue or warm cream works well.

Keep the bird’s feet reduced to two thin lines gripping the branch, since overly detailed feet tend to look stiff at this flat, simple-shape scale.

Place the bird slightly off center and at a different height than the oranges around it, which keeps the eye moving around the canopy rather than landing on one spot only.

If a realistic bird species feels daunting, simplify it down to a generic rounded songbird shape, it reads just as charmingly in this style.

Palette: Sap Green,Cadmium Orange,Soft Sky Blue,Cream

A quieter interior idea now, an old orange crate used as a bookshelf repurposes the wooden crate shape from earlier for a cozy home corner. Paint the crate as a simple flat box with visible plank lines and a worn, slightly uneven wood texture built from two close shades of tan, then stand a small row of books inside it, each book a flat rectangle in a different muted color, leaning at slightly different angles rather than standing perfectly straight.

Add a small stenciled orange or citrus label on the crate’s side, a leftover trace of its old life as a fruit box, painted simply in flat orange and cream.

Books leaning too uniformly can look stiff, so let one or two tilt against their neighbors and vary their heights slightly for a lived-in feel.

If plain tan wood feels flat, add a few thin darker wood grain lines with a dry brush once the base color has dried.

Palette: Raw Umber,Cream,Cadmium Orange,Soft Grey

Switching to a cozier drink, hot chocolate with an orange slice pairs a warm mug with one bright citrus accent. Paint the mug first as a simple rounded shape in a solid color of your choice, filling the top with a flat dark brown chocolate circle, then add a few soft swirls of white gouache for cream floating on the surface, dragged lightly with a slightly dry brush so the swirl edges stay soft rather than hard lined.

Rest one orange slice against the rim of the mug, painted with the same sunburst segment pattern used elsewhere, which gives the whole cozy drink one pop of bright color against all that brown and cream.

Steam is a nice optional touch but easy to overdo, so if you add it, keep it to one or two faint curling lines rather than a thick cloud that competes with the mug itself.

No white gouache for the cream swirl, a cream-tinted mix with a touch of yellow works just as well.

Palette: Dark Chocolate Brown,Titanium White,Cadmium Orange,Cream

Closing out on a playful note, a girl floating on an orange slice pool float is a fun summer scene built around one oversized prop. Paint the pool float first as a giant flat orange slice shape, complete with segment lines and a cream pith ring, filling a generous portion of the page, then add a simple flat blue water shape around it with a few thin white curved lines to suggest gentle ripples.

Paint the girl lying across the float in a simple relaxed pose, arms draped over the sides, keeping her shape loose and her face just lightly suggested since the float itself carries most of the visual interest.

Water can look stiff if every ripple line is the same length and spacing, so vary the ripple lines slightly in length and curve, clustering a few more closely near the float’s edge where it displaces the water.

For more bright, simple summer scenes to pair with this one, these easy painting ideas for beginners offer a good next stop once this piece is finished.

What to Do Next

Pick one idea that matches the mood you are in today, a quick juice glass if you want something finished fast, or the Seville street if you have a full afternoon free. Set up on a sheet of heavyweight paper, mix your oranges and greens before you start, and let the fruit itself guide the rest of the palette.

Frequently Asked Questions

What paint works best for an orange painting in this flat, sunny style?

Gouache works best because its opaque, matte finish gives clean flat color blocks without the shine of acrylic or the unpredictability of watercolor. Build color in dry layers and keep your mixes thick rather than watery for the crispest shapes.

How do you mix a true blood orange red without it turning muddy?

Mix cadmium orange with a small amount of alizarin crimson, adding the red gradually until you reach a deep red-orange rather than brown. Keep the mix opaque and test it on scrap paper before committing to the fruit’s flesh.

How do you keep orange fruit looking round instead of flat on the page?

Decide on one light direction before you start and leave that side of the fruit slightly lighter while deepening the opposite side with a touch of raw umber mixed in. That single consistent choice across the whole piece does most of the work.

What is the easiest orange painting idea to start with as a beginner?

A glass of fresh orange juice or a bowl of tangerines works well first, since both rely on simple round shapes and a small, forgiving color palette. Save the figures and perspective scenes for once you feel confident with basic fruit shapes.

How many colors do I really need for a whole set of orange paintings?

Four or five go a long way: a bright cadmium orange, a leaf green, a warm cream, a cobalt blue accent and one deep red for blood orange tones. Mixing from these keeps every piece in the series feeling like part of one collection.
