29 Sketchbook Prompts to Fill Every Page When You Do Not Know What to Draw

41

Sketchbook prompts are the fastest way out of a blank page, and this set gives you twenty nine of them, each one already turned into a finished little sketch so you can see exactly where it goes. Every prompt here is small on purpose: a breakfast tray, a sleepy cat, a rainy window. Nothing asks for a whole afternoon.

Work through them in order or jump around, whatever catches your eye today. Each one comes with the tools, the order to work in, the spot where it usually wobbles, and one tip to carry into tomorrow’s page.

Breakfast from above is the gentlest way to start a sketchbook habit, because the plate gives you a circle to build from and nothing needs to look like anything but itself. Sit your tray or table in front of you, look straight down, and sketch the big circle of the plate in pencil first, then the mug, then the smaller shapes inside them.

Go over the pencil in fineliner once you are happy, letting the cup handle and the toast corners stay a little uneven. Watercolor comes last: keep the washes flat and simple, one color per shape, and let the white of the paper do the work on anything pale like egg or milk.

If this is your first time looking straight down at a table, the usual trap is drawing the mug from the side out of habit. Check it against the plate: from above a mug is an oval, not a tall rectangle.

No watercolor at hand, colored pencil fills the same flat shapes just as happily. Try it tomorrow with a different meal and you already have a habit going.

The view from your window turns into a prompt the moment you stop trying to draw everything you see and pick three shapes instead: maybe a rooftop, a tree, and the shape of the sky between them. Start with a light pencil horizon line low on the page so the sky gets room to breathe, then block in the roofline and any tree shapes as simple silhouettes.

Ink the window frame first if it shows in your view, since that rectangle anchors everything else inside it. Wash the sky in one pass while the paper is still a little damp, then add rooftops and trees once it has dried so the edges stay crisp.

Eye level matters here more than anything else: if you are sitting, the horizon sits lower on the page, and everything above it, chimneys, branches, gets taller and thinner as it goes up. That single decision makes the whole view feel like it is seen from where you are actually sitting.

Today’s tip: paint the sky before you ink the foreground details, it keeps colors from bleeding into linework you want to stay clean.

A snail on your morning walk is a lovely low pressure subject because the whole body is built from one spiral and one curved line. Draw the shell spiral first in pencil, starting at the center and curling outward two or three times, then add the soft sausage body trailing from underneath it.

Ink the spiral slowly, it is the part everyone rushes, and a shaky spiral still reads as a shell as long as the curl keeps going the same direction. Add two thin stalks with tiny dots for eyes, then set the whole snail on a pavement crack or a leaf edge so it has somewhere to be.

Watercolor the shell in warm tan with a darker ring near the center for depth, and leave the body pale grey green so it does not compete with the shell pattern. If pencil and ink feel fiddly for the spiral, a brush pen keeps the line moving in one smooth stroke.

Give the shell one extra watercolor stripe once it is dry and the whole page feels finished.

Your cat as a tiny shopkeeper is where sketchbook prompts start getting properly fun, and it works because you are really just drawing your cat’s face on a small standing body behind a counter. Sketch the counter as a simple rectangle first, then build the cat sitting upright behind it with rounded ears and a little apron shape over the chest.

Ink the face last, after the body and counter are settled, so the expression stays fresh and does not get overworked. Watercolor the fur in your cat’s real colors, keeping the apron a plain contrasting tone so the eye knows where to land first.

This is a nice one for ten minutes if you just draw the cat and counter with a jar or two of treats on top, or stretch to forty minutes and add shelves behind full of tiny tins and a bell on the counter. Either way works as a finished page.

Draw your cat’s actual markings rather than guessing, it makes the shopkeeper instantly recognizable as yours. For more animals in little jobs like this one, this sketchbook idea collection has plenty more to borrow from.

Turning a plant into a character is simply a matter of giving its pot a face and its leaves a little personality, so pick a plant from your windowsill and start with the pot shape in pencil, slightly trapezoid, narrower at the base. Draw the leaves next, reaching up and out in whatever direction feels like a gesture, an arm waving, a leaf drooping sleepily.

Ink the pot first since it is the sturdiest shape, then the leaves, keeping the lines loose rather than botanically correct. Add a simple face low on the pot, two dots and a curved line go a long way.

The usual wobble here is making every leaf the same size, which flattens the character. Vary them, one small new leaf unfurling, one big tired one bending down, and the plant suddenly has a story.

Watercolor in two greens, a brighter one for young leaves and a deeper one for older ones, with the pot in warm terracotta.

No terracotta paint on hand, any warm orange brown mix does the job.

Palette: Terracotta,Fresh Green,Forest Green,Soft Cream

A friend waiting for the bus is a gentle way to practice a standing figure without worrying about a full scene around her. Block the figure in pencil using simple ovals and lines first, head, shoulders, torso, legs, keeping proportions loose rather than exact, then dress her in whatever she actually wears, a coat, a bag over one shoulder.

Ink the outline once the pose feels balanced, and add a bus stop sign or a bench edge behind her so she has a place to stand. Watercolor the coat in one flat confident color and leave most of the background as plain cream paper, which keeps the whole figure feeling light rather than crowded.

A useful trick for any standing figure: the head height repeated down the body roughly seven or eight times gives you a believable adult proportion, so check your figure against that before you ink.

Keep the face simple, a suggestion of features reads better at this scale than trying for a likeness.

Palette: Navy Blue,Mustard Yellow,Soft Pink,Cream White

A tiny house for a mouse lets you design a whole little home inside one sketchbook page, which makes it a nice one to slow down on. Start with the outside shape, a round door cut into a mushroom cap, or a little cottage carved from an acorn, sketched lightly in pencil as one simple silhouette.

Ink the main shape first, then add the small details that make it a home: a round window, a tiny chimney, a doormat. Watercolor the roof and walls in two tones so the structure reads clearly, saving a warm yellow glow for the window to suggest someone is home.

Quick version, ten minutes: just the house and door. Forty minute version: add a path of pebbles leading to the door and a mouse peeking out, which turns one object into a small scene.

No mushroom or acorn in mind, a simple round pebble house works just as well and is even easier to shape.

Palette: Burnt Sienna,Sap Green,Golden Yellow,Soft Cream

A sleeping pet is one of the kindest subjects to draw because it holds still, so settle in nearby and sketch the overall curled or stretched shape first as one soft continuous line before adding any details. Resist starting with the face, the body shape is what makes a sleeping pose read correctly.

Once the pencil shape feels right, ink it slowly, letting the line relax into the curve of the spine or the fold of a paw. Watercolor next, working wet into wet for the fur so the color pools softly rather than sitting in a hard edge, which suits sleep far better than a crisp outline would.

Lifting color back out with a dry brush or a bit of tissue while the paint is still damp is the trick that saves this one, it pulls out soft highlights along the back and head without adding a single extra line.

If your pet will not sit still even asleep, work from a quick phone photo instead, it holds the pose for you.

You Will Need

• kneaded eraser

Palette: Raw Umber,Warm Grey,Soft Cream,Charcoal Grey

A mouse living in a fruit takes the tiny house idea somewhere sillier, carving a little round doorway straight into an orange, a pear, or a strawberry. Draw the fruit’s outline first in pencil, keeping it large and simple, then cut a round doorway into its side with a curved line before adding the mouse peeking out or curled up asleep inside.

Ink the fruit shape first, then the doorway, then the mouse last so it sits convincingly inside the opening rather than floating in front of it. Watercolor the fruit in its real color with a slightly deeper shade around the doorway to suggest depth going inward.

The edge where fruit meets doorway is where this usually goes wrong, a straight hard line looks pasted on. Soften that inner edge with a damp brush right after painting so it reads as a hollowed opening rather than a sticker.

A strawberry with tiny seed dots added in fineliner once dry makes a particularly charming version of this prompt.

Palette: Tomato Red,Raw Umber,Cream White,Leaf Green

A party inside your fridge is a playful excuse to draw food with personalities, each jar and vegetable given a tiny dancing pose or a party hat. Open your actual fridge for reference, pick five or six items, and sketch the fridge shelves first as simple horizontal lines dividing the page.

Draw each food item next, giving at least two of them small arms or a face so the party feeling reads immediately, then ink the shelves first and the items on top of them. Watercolor each item in its own bright flat color, which keeps the page feeling like a celebration rather than a still life.

Vary this one next time by changing the occasion, a fridge birthday party one week, a fridge dance party the next, since the format stays the same while the props and poses change completely.

Keep the fridge outline itself very plain, white space and shelf lines only, so all the character stays with the food.

Palette: Tomato Red,Golden Yellow,Leaf Green,Soft Blue

Mapping your street turns a familiar walk into a page full of small drawings, so start by sketching the street itself as a simple winding line down the page in pencil, loose and a little curved rather than ruler straight. Mark the houses, trees, and corners you pass as tiny simplified shapes along that line rather than full buildings.

Ink the street line first, then the landmarks, keeping every building reduced to its simplest box and roof shape so none of them steals the page. Watercolor lightly, one soft color per landmark, letting plenty of cream paper show between them so the map stays readable.

Looking straight down at a map view changes the whole drawing: rooftops become simple shapes seen from above rather than fronts with doors and windows, so let go of facade details entirely here.

Label two or three spots in small handwriting, the corner shop, your favorite tree, it turns a map into a keepsake.

Palette: Sap Green,Terracotta,Soft Blue,Cream White

A teapot family is a sweet excuse to draw the same basic shape several times with small variations, a big round teapot, a smaller rounder teacup, a tiny thimble sized one beside it. Sketch the largest teapot first in pencil using one round body and a curved spout, then scale the same basic shape down for each smaller member of the family.

Ink the big teapot first, then work down in size, keeping every spout and handle curved in the same direction so the family feels related. Watercolor each one in a different pattern or color, florals on one, stripes on another, so they read as individuals while still sharing that one teapot silhouette.

Comparing each new shape against the first teapot you drew, rather than drawing each one from scratch, keeps the family looking like a matching set instead of random shapes.

Line them up on a shelf line across the bottom of the page to finish the scene simply.

Palette: Dusty Blue,Dusty Pink,Mustard Yellow,Cream White

Drawing your favorite outfit works best laid flat as if it just came off the hanger, so arrange the actual pieces on a bed or floor and sketch them from directly above. Block in the biggest piece first, a dress or a jacket, as a simple symmetrical shape, then add smaller pieces, shoes, a bag, around it.

Ink the main garment first, keeping folds to just two or three suggested lines rather than drawing every wrinkle. Watercolor in the real fabric colors, leaving the folds as slightly paler or white so they read as creases without extra linework.

If this is your first time drawing clothing flat, the most common mistake is making both sides of a symmetrical garment different widths. Fold your reference item in half if you can, or eyeball a center line on the page first and check both sides match it.

Add one small accessory, a hair clip or a ring, tucked beside the outfit to finish the page.

Palette: Dusty Pink,Mustard Yellow,Charcoal Grey,Cream White

A cloud shaped like an animal is a loose, forgiving subject since clouds are not meant to have hard edges anyway. Start with a very light pencil outline suggesting the animal’s shape hidden in the cloud, a rabbit ear here, a tail there, then ink only the suggestion of it, broken lines rather than a solid outline, so the animal stays half hidden in cloud form.

Watercolor is where this one really comes alive: wet the sky area first, then drop soft grey and white into the cloud shape while the paper is still damp, letting the edges bloom and feather on their own rather than controlling them.

Lifting color out with a clean damp brush while it is still wet pulls bright cloud highlights straight out of the wash, which is far more convincing than trying to paint white clouds onto blue.

No watercolor paper on hand, even a quick wash on regular sketchbook paper still blooms nicely if you work fast.

Palette: Soft Blue,Pale Grey,Cream White,Payne’s Grey

Your dog as a postman follows the shopkeeper idea but gives him somewhere to go instead of somewhere to stand, delivering a letter to a tiny mailbox. Sketch your dog’s real proportions standing upright first, then add a small satchel bag across the chest and a cap between the ears.

Ink the body and cap first, then the satchel strap crossing it, keeping the pose simple, one paw extended holding an envelope works well. Watercolor your dog’s actual coat colors and markings, with the satchel and cap in one plain contrasting color so they read instantly as the uniform.

Eye level matters for the mailbox beside him: set it at roughly his shoulder height rather than guessing, and the whole scene reads as one believable moment instead of two separate drawings pasted together.

Give him an envelope with a tiny stamp drawn on in one dot of color, it is a small detail that makes the whole page feel finished.

Palette: Burnt Sienna,Navy Blue,Cream White,Tomato Red

A girl standing in a flower field gives you a full figure with a background that is forgiving of mistakes, since flowers can be scattered almost anywhere and still look right. Block the figure first in pencil with simple shapes, then sketch the horizon line low behind her so the field has room to spread across most of the page.

Ink the figure before the flowers, keeping her pose relaxed, arms loose at her sides or one hand brushing the flower tops. Watercolor the field in one broad green wash first, letting it dry, then dot flower colors on top in small clusters rather than evenly spaced, which reads as far more natural.

Dry brushing a little extra green texture along the bottom edge once everything is dry adds grassy texture without a single new line, just a nearly dry brush dragged lightly across the paper.

Keep the flowers simple, a dot with a few petal strokes around it is plenty at this scale. If botanicals like this appeal to you, these flower sketchbook ideas go further into the same mood.

Palette: Sap Green,Dusty Pink,Mustard Yellow,Soft Blue

Hands holding a baby bird is a tender close up subject, and the trick is drawing the hands as simple cupped shapes rather than worrying over every finger. Sketch two curved palm shapes first, overlapping slightly to form a cup, then nestle a small rounded bird shape inside them, barely peeking over the fingers.

Ink the hands first, keeping finger lines minimal, two or three creases suggest knuckles without needing anatomical detail. Watercolor the skin tone in one soft flat wash, then the bird in warm browns and creams, leaving a tiny white highlight dot in its eye unpainted.

Comparing the size of the bird against one finger width keeps the scale believable: a baby bird this small usually sits no larger than a thumb across the cupped hands.

If hands feel daunting, start from a quick photo of your own hands cupped together, it is far easier than drawing from imagination.

Palette: Warm Beige,Raw Umber,Soft Cream,Dusty Pink

A bookshelf of dream books lets you invent titles and covers from scratch, which makes it one of the most relaxing prompts here. Draw the shelf as one simple horizontal line first, then fill it with a row of book spines of varying widths and heights, some leaning, some standing straight.

Ink each spine separately, varying the line weight slightly between them so no two books look identical. Watercolor each spine a different flat color, then add tiny handwritten titles once the paint is dry, real books you love or ones you wish existed.

The quick ten minute version is the row of spines alone; the forty minute version adds a small object propped against the books, a teacup, a candle, a stack of three books lying flat on top, which turns a shelf into a little scene.

Lean two or three books at a slight angle rather than keeping them all upright, it instantly makes the shelf feel lived in.

Palette: Dusty Blue,Mustard Yellow,Tomato Red,Sap Green

A shop you love works well as a small storefront study, picking out the window display and the sign rather than the whole building. Sketch the window frame first as a simple rectangle, then the door beside it, before filling the window with whatever that shop actually sells, flowers, pastries, books.

Ink the frame and door first since they hold the whole drawing together, then the window contents, keeping them loose and suggested rather than individually detailed. Watercolor the shopfront in one or two main colors, then let the window display carry smaller bursts of brighter color against it.

Looking at the shop from eye level rather than from across the street changes the feel entirely, it puts the reader right at the door rather than looking at a distant building, so keep the window large and close in the frame.

Add a small awning or hanging sign in a contrasting color, it finishes the facade without much extra work. For more storefront inspiration with the same cozy feel, these street scene paintings are worth a look.

Palette: Dusty Pink,Sap Green,Mustard Yellow,Charcoal Grey

A dessert in a glass, a trifle or a sundae, gives you a built in container to simplify the whole drawing, since the glass outline holds every layer in place. Sketch the glass shape first in pencil, a simple tapered or straight sided cup, then divide it into horizontal bands for each layer of cream, fruit, or sponge.

Ink the glass outline first, then the layer lines inside it, keeping each layer boundary slightly wavy rather than perfectly straight, which reads as soft food rather than a technical diagram. Watercolor each layer separately, letting them dry before adding the next so the colors stay distinct rather than muddying together.

Working wet into wet within a single layer, say a berry layer, gives soft natural color variation, while keeping adjoining layers fully dry before touching them is what keeps the bands crisp. That contrast is the whole trick of this subject.

Add a spoon leaning against the glass and a sprinkle of dots on top for texture.

Palette: Dusty Pink,Cream White,Tomato Red,Warm Beige

For more small food subjects at this same easy scale, this collection of easy watercolor food ideas covers plenty of sweet and savory options.

A bird on a wire is a classic sketchbook subject precisely because it is so simple to build: one straight line across the page, one small rounded bird shape perched on it. Draw the wire first with a ruler or a steady freehand line, then sketch the bird’s body as a single teardrop shape sitting just above it, tail hanging slightly below the line.

Ink the wire first in one confident unbroken line, then the bird on top of it, keeping the beak and tail as the only sharp points on an otherwise rounded body. Watercolor the bird in one or two flat tones, silhouette dark against a pale sky wash works especially well here and needs almost no detail at all.

Try two or three birds spaced unevenly along the same wire next time rather than one alone, it is the easiest way to vary this prompt without changing the technique at all.

Keep the sky wash very pale so the bird’s silhouette stays the clear focus of the page. For more bird studies at this same gentle pace, these bird pencil drawing ideas make a good companion set.

Palette: Charcoal Grey,Soft Blue,Cream White,Payne’s Grey

A picnic you wish you had is the perfect excuse to draw a whole spread of small food shapes on a blanket, inventing every item from imagination rather than reference. Sketch the blanket first as a simple rectangle with a checked or striped pattern drawn lightly in pencil, then scatter plates, a basket, and fruit across it.

Ink the blanket outline and pattern first, then each food item on top, keeping everything small and simple since there are several objects sharing the page. Watercolor the blanket pattern in one or two colors, then let each food item carry its own bright color so the whole spread feels festive rather than busy.

The ten minute version is the blanket with three or four items; the forty minute version fills it generously and adds a drink glass, a book left open, maybe a hat resting at the edge.

Leave gaps of plain cream blanket between items rather than crowding every inch, it keeps the page feeling relaxed rather than cluttered.

Palette: Tomato Red,Mustard Yellow,Sap Green,Cream White

A rainy window is a satisfying subject because the mood does most of the work for you, built from just a window frame and a scatter of raindrops. Draw the window frame first, simple crossing lines dividing the page into panes, then add a loose outdoor shape beyond it, a blurred tree or rooftop, with no sharp detail.

Ink the window frame confidently, then flick a light scatter of small round drops across the glass with the pen tip. Watercolor the outdoor view first in soft blended greys and greens while the paper is damp, letting it blur, then once fully dry add a faint grey wash just over the glass to suggest the rain’s dampness.

Masking fluid dotted on before that final wash protects little circles of white paper, so when you peel it away afterward you are left with clean bright raindrops sitting on the glass. It is the single trick that makes this page glisten.

No masking fluid on hand, a white gel pen flicked on after painting gives a similar sparkle.

You Will Need

• masking fluid
• white gel pen

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Soft Blue,Sap Green,Pale Grey

A frog having breakfast brings a little humor into the sketchbook, sitting a frog upright at a tiny table with a leaf for a plate. Sketch the frog’s round body and bulging eyes first in pencil, then add a small table shape in front of him holding one simple food item, a berry, a fly, whatever suits the joke.

Ink the frog first, keeping the eyes as two simple overlapping circles sitting high on the head, then the table and food on top. Watercolor the frog in classic green with a paler belly, and let the table and food carry a contrasting warm color so the whole scene reads clearly at a glance.

Checking the eye size against the head width keeps this one from going wrong: frog eyes read correctly at roughly a third of the head’s width, any smaller and the charm disappears.

Give him a napkin tucked under his chin in one quick ink line, it adds the whole joke in a single stroke.

Palette: Leaf Green,Cream White,Tomato Red,Raw Umber

A seasonal still life keeps you drawing from life, gathering two or three items the current season offers, a pinecone and an apple, or a seashell and a sprig of lavender, and arranging them loosely on the page. Sketch each object’s basic shape first in pencil, overlapping them slightly so the group reads as one arrangement rather than scattered objects.

Ink the front most object first, then work backward so overlapping edges stay clean rather than crossing lines awkwardly. Watercolor from the lightest object to the darkest, building shadow last once every shape has its base color down.

A single light source from one side, a window to your left or right, tells you exactly where every cast shadow falls: keep all shadows falling the same direction and the group holds together as one scene.

No real objects to hand, work from a quick phone photo of a seasonal display instead, the drawing comes out just as well. For a whole season’s worth of these small studies, this autumn sketchbook collection is worth bookmarking.

Palette: Burnt Orange,Raw Umber,Sap Green,Cream White

Turning a recipe into pictures means replacing every ingredient word with a tiny drawing of it, laid out in a row or a grid down the page. List your recipe’s steps lightly in pencil first as a guide, then sketch one small simple icon for each ingredient or action, an egg, a whisk, a flame for heat.

Ink each icon separately, keeping them all roughly the same size so the sequence reads evenly across the page. Watercolor each one in its natural color, then connect the icons with a thin arrow or dotted line showing the order they happen in.

Vary this one next time by choosing a completely different recipe, a drink instead of a dish, a dessert instead of dinner, since the icon format works for any set of steps once you have done it once.

Keep the icons simpler than you think you need to, a whisk can be three curved lines and still read clearly at this scale.

Palette: Mustard Yellow,Tomato Red,Sap Green,Charcoal Grey

A tiny world in a teacup imagines a whole little landscape living inside one cup, a miniature garden or beach scene rising out of the rim. Draw the teacup and saucer first as the familiar rounded shapes, then sketch the miniature scene filling the inside, tiny trees, a path, maybe a rolled wave if you choose a beach.

Ink the teacup outline first, then the tiny scene inside it, keeping every element inside noticeably smaller than the cup itself so the scale joke reads clearly. Watercolor the cup in one plain pattern, then let the miniature world inside carry brighter, busier color so it reads as the main event.

Comparing the size of your smallest tree or figure against the cup handle keeps the scale consistent, everything inside should look convincingly tiny next to that handle.

Steam rising from the cup in a few soft curved ink lines finishes the page nicely and adds a bit of atmosphere for free.

Palette: Dusty Blue,Sap Green,Mustard Yellow,Cream White

Your morning routine in boxes turns an ordinary morning into a small comic strip, six or so square panels down the page, each one a single moment. Divide the page into equal boxes with a ruler first in pencil, then sketch one simple scene per box, waking up, making coffee, getting dressed, each reduced to its most recognizable shape.

Ink each box’s border first, then the scene inside it, working left to right and top to bottom so the sequence stays easy to follow. Watercolor each panel in a slightly different dominant color, it helps each moment feel distinct even though the panels are small.

The quick version uses four boxes and covers the basics; the forty minute version stretches to eight and adds small details in each one, a cup steaming, a cat underfoot, that give the strip real personality.

Keep every figure in the same simplified style across all boxes, consistency matters more than detail in a strip like this.

Palette: Mustard Yellow,Soft Blue,Dusty Pink,Cream White

Ending on your street with a cat on every roof gives you a chance to pull in nearly everything practiced so far, buildings, a cat shape repeated with variation, and a bit of personality in each one. Sketch a simple row of rooftops first in pencil, varying their heights slightly, then add one cat silhouette perched on each roof in a different pose, sitting, stretching, curled up.

Ink the rooftops first as one connected skyline, then each cat on top, keeping every cat’s basic shape consistent even as the pose changes. Watercolor the rooftops in muted tones so they recede slightly, then give each cat a different coat color so they stand out as the real subject of the page.

Comparing each cat’s size against the chimney beside it keeps the scale sensible from roof to roof, since it is easy to let later cats grow or shrink without a steady reference point.

Close your sketchbook today knowing this page alone used nearly every trick from the rest of the list, proportion, perspective, texture, variation, all in one skyline.

What to Do Next

Pick whichever prompt matches the time you have today, the breakfast tray or the bird on a wire for ten spare minutes, the street skyline or the picnic spread for a longer sitting. Open to a fresh page in your sketchbook, pencil the main shape first, and let the rest of this list carry you through tomorrow’s page too.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do I need to start sketchbook prompts like these?

A fineliner pen, a cream or white sketchbook, and a small watercolor set cover every idea here. Pencil and a kneaded eraser help for the figure and animal prompts, and a waterbrush speeds up the painting step considerably.

How long should one sketchbook prompt take?

Most of these finish in ten to forty minutes depending on how much detail you add. The breakfast, cloud, and bird on a wire prompts suit a quick ten minute session, while the street skyline and picnic reward a longer sitting.

What if I cannot draw animals or people well yet?

Start with the simplest shapes first, circles for heads, ovals for bodies, and build up from there rather than aiming for a likeness straight away. The cat shopkeeper and sleeping pet prompts are forgiving starting points since fur covers small shape mistakes.

Do I need watercolor paper for these pages?

A proper watercolor sketchbook handles wet washes best and resists buckling. A regular sketchbook still works for lighter washes or if you switch to colored pencil, though very wet techniques like the rainy window suit true watercolor paper better.

How do I keep a daily sketchbook habit going?

Pick one prompt the night before so there is no decision to make in the morning, and keep the session short on purpose. Working through this list in order, one page a day, builds the habit without pressure to make each page perfect.
