33 Dachshund Painting Ideas and Other Little Dogs With Big Personalities

34

A dachshund painting is basically a love letter with a paintbrush: that long body, those tiny legs and that one unimpressed eyebrow do most of the work for you before you even mix a color. This list starts with dachshunds in every ridiculous outfit and situation a long dog can get into, then widens out to the pugs, chihuahuas, beagles and other small dogs who deserve the same treatment.

Every idea below is sized for one sitting, with acrylic on a surface you can prop on the kitchen table, and each one tells you where to start, where it usually goes wrong, and how to fix it. Scroll, pick the dog that makes you laugh first, and paint that one today.

Start with the dachshund in a hot hot costume, because the joke is already built into the shape of the dog and that makes this the friendliest place to begin. Sketch the long bun shape first in pencil on canvas, then nest the dog’s body inside it so the costume reads as one soft, curved form wrapping the dog rather than a stiff box.

Block in the bun in warm cream, the body of the dog in chocolate brown, and save the ketchup and mustard squiggles for last using a small round brush loaded with thick paint. Where this goes wrong is usually the squiggle: if your first line wobbles into mud, let it dry and paint a cleaner one on top rather than scrubbing it out.

Keep the face simple, two dot eyes and a closed smile, so the costume stays the star. If you do not have a fine liner for the final highlight on the nose, a toothpick dipped in white paint works just as well.

Finish today by adding one small sesame-seed dot pattern along the bun edge, it takes thirty seconds and sells the whole idea.

Move from food costume to foul weather with a dachshund trotting along in a little yellow raincoat. Pencil in the long body first at a slight angle to suggest walking, then draw the raincoat as a simple draped shape over the back rather than a fitted jacket, which keeps the proportions forgiving.

This is a good one for a proportion check: hold your brush up against the reference or your own mental image and compare the length of the body to the height of the legs, a dachshund is roughly twice as long as it is tall at the shoulder, and keeping that ratio honest is what makes the breed read correctly rather than just looking like a stretched generic dog.

Paint the coat in bright yellow first, then the wet-look street in cool grey-blue strokes behind, using a dry brush dragged sideways for a few streaky reflections. If the street looks flat, add two or three vertical white dashes to suggest rain and reflected light.

Tip for today: keep the background loose and the coat crisp, the contrast does the storytelling.

Palette: Cadmium Yellow,Payne’s Grey,Titanium White,Chocolate Brown

Give the long-haired dachshund its moment here, draped over a rich velvet cushion like visiting royalty. Lay in the cushion shape first as a soft, slightly squashed circle in a deep jewel color, then place the dog’s body on top, letting the long fur spill over the edge in a few larger clumps rather than many tiny strands.

This idea is about texture, so load a dry, stiff brush with a small amount of paint and drag it in short strokes along the direction the fur grows, this breaks the edge of the dog up and reads as softness instead of a hard outline. If the fur ends up looking stiff or spiky, soften it by lifting a little paint off the tips with a damp cloth before it fully dries.

Keep the cushion smooth and glossy by contrast, using a flat brush for even coverage and a touch of white for the velvet’s highlight folds. No stiff brush on hand, a crumpled paper towel dabbed over wet paint gives a similar broken texture.

Finish with one bright tassel or button on the cushion corner for a pop of color.

Palette: Deep Burgundy,Cream,Raw Umber,Gold Ochre

Try a dry brush dragged lightly over the fur edges once the base color is dry, it lifts a bit of paint and adds broken, hairy texture without needing fine detail work.

After the cushion comes the whole sofa, with a dachshund stretched out full length like a furry draft excluder. This is the easiest body shape on the list to get wrong because the length can flatten out, so before you paint, mark the nose tip and tail tip with two small dots and measure the distance between them against the height of the sofa arm, this keeps the stretch believable rather than cartoonishly long.

Block in the sofa shape first in a soft neutral so the dog has somewhere to lie, then paint the dog’s body as one continuous curved shape following gravity, slightly sagging into the cushion. Add the legs last, short and splayed, since they are the part most likely to look like an afterthought if painted too early.

If the sofa and dog blend together because the colors are too close, pull them apart with a thin outline in a darker shade along the contact edge. No canvas board handy, a stretched canvas works just as well for this relaxed horizontal composition.

Close with a small wrinkle or fold line in the sofa fabric right where the dog’s weight presses down, it sells the whole pose.

Bring the dachshund indoors for a cozy portrait in a chunky turtleneck sweater. Start with the head and neck shape, since the turtleneck’s rolled collar sits right under the chin and needs to look like it is actually supporting weight, then build the sweater body as one soft rounded block beneath.

Where the eye lands fastest here is the face, so set it at a slightly low angle, as if you are looking up at the dog from floor level, this small perspective choice makes the sweater collar bunch convincingly under the chin and gives the portrait a warmer, more intimate feel than a straight-on view.

Paint the sweater in a flat mid-tone first, then add a simple ribbed texture with a fan brush or the edge of a flat brush dragged in short vertical lines. If the ribbing looks too busy, step back, most of it reads fine from a normal viewing distance even if it looks rough up close.

One tip for today: pick a sweater color that is not brown or tan, so it contrasts cleanly against the dog’s own coat.

Palette: Forest Green,Chocolate Brown,Cream,Charcoal Grey

Scale right down for this one, a dachshund puppy curled asleep inside an oversized shoe. Draw the shoe first as a simple rounded boot shape, generous and a bit too big, then tuck the puppy’s curled body into the opening so only a soft rounded back and ear show.

Here is the quick version for ten minutes: block in the shoe in one flat leather brown, the puppy as one curled cream shape with a darker ear, and a few closed-eye lines, done. The forty-minute version adds laces threaded through the eyelets, a bit of worn texture on the shoe toe using a dry brush, and soft shadow under the puppy’s curled body to seat it properly inside the shoe.

The usual slip-up is making the puppy too big for the shoe, which kills the joke, so keep it smaller than feels natural at first. If you only have canvas paper rather than board, this small composition works well on either.

Finish with one small heart or paw shape doodled faintly on the shoe’s side for extra charm.

Palette: Tan Leather,Cream,Soft Brown,Blush Pink

Set the next dachshund under a little cafe table, peeking out between the legs like it is waiting for a dropped crumb. Paint the table and its legs first as a light, simple structure, then place the dog crouched beneath it so part of the body is cropped by the tabletop or a chair leg, which immediately reads as a real candid moment rather than a posed portrait.

This idea is about light and where it falls: decide the light source is coming from one side, say a cafe window, and keep the shadows under the table consistent with that, darker on the side away from the window and a warm glow where the light hits the dog’s coat. That single choice does more to sell the scene than any amount of extra detail.

If the composition feels cluttered with table legs everywhere, simplify to just two visible legs and let the rest imply itself off canvas. No round table surface to reference, a simple oval shape from any plate works as a stand-in guide.

Tip for today: add one small coffee cup shadow on the table above the dog to tie the whole scene together.

You Will Need

• a small plate or saucer to trace the tabletop circle

Palette: Cream,Chocolate Brown,Soft Grey,Warm Yellow

Pack the next dachshund into a picnic basket, ears draped over the woven rim like the most spoiled sandwich in the park. Sketch the basket as a simple rounded container first, then weave in a loose crosshatch texture with a thin brush before placing the dog’s head and front paws resting over the edge.

If you want more confidence with proportion here, compare the width of the dog’s head to the width of the basket opening, the head should take up roughly a third to a half of that opening so the basket still looks like it could plausibly hold a dog rather than swallowing it whole. Adjust the basket size rather than the dog if it feels off.

Paint the basket in warm ochre with darker brown shadow lines for the weave, then the dog on top once that layer is dry so the edges stay crisp. A checkered cloth draped over one side adds a nice accent color; if you do not have red, any contrasting bright works.

Finish with a single flower or leaf tucked beside the dog’s ear for a small storytelling detail.

Palette: Ochre,Raw Umber,Cadmium Red,Cream

Let the next dachshund cause a little chaos, caught mid-dig in a flower bed with dirt flying. Start with the body in a low, lunging pose, front paws pushed into the soil and back end raised, since this action pose is what makes the painting funny rather than just a dog sitting near flowers.

For the texture trick here, flick a loaded old toothbrush or stiff brush toward the canvas to splatter small dots of dark brown for flying dirt, working over the dried background first so the splatter sits clearly on top. Keep the splatter concentrated near the paws and taper it off rather than covering the whole canvas.

Paint the flower bed as a simple strip of green with a few loose flower shapes dabbed in with the end of a brush handle, no need for botanical accuracy. If the splatter goes wrong and lands somewhere unwanted, let it dry and paint over the stray dots with background color.

Tip for today: one flipped-over flower near the dog’s paws tells the whole story without needing any more detail.

You Will Need

• an old toothbrush for splatter

Palette: Sap Green,Raw Umber,Chocolate Brown,Pink

Dress the next dachshund up simply, a neat portrait with a gingham bow clipped to one ear. Keep this one of the easier pieces on the list: block in the head and shoulders large and centered, paint the coat in one smooth even tone, then add the bow last as the single decorative focus.

The bow is where beginners tend to overwork things trying to paint every checked square, so simplify: paint the bow shape in white first, let it dry, then use a small flat brush to lay in just four or five evenly spaced squares in your accent color rather than a full grid, the eye fills in the rest of the pattern.

If your gingham squares come out uneven, that is fine, hand-painted pattern never needs to be perfectly regular to read correctly. No fine brush for the small squares, the corner of a flat brush makes a clean enough square mark.

Finish with a tiny highlight dot in each eye, it is the fastest way to make any dog portrait feel alive.

Palette: Chocolate Brown,Cream,White,Cherry Red

Take the wire-haired dachshund to the coast for something with more texture and a change of scenery. Lay in a simple beach horizon first, a pale sand strip and a soft blue stripe of sea, then place the dog standing on the sand with its scruffy coat catching the light.

For the coat texture here, use a stiff, almost dry brush and short stabbing strokes rather than long smooth ones, this is what separates a wire coat from a smooth one and is worth practicing on a scrap corner first if you have not tried it before. Build it up gradually, it is easier to add more texture than to remove too much.

Keep the sand and sea loose and smooth by contrast so the dog’s texture stands out as the main event. If the horizon line comes out wobbly, a strip of painter’s tape laid down before you paint the sea gives a crisp straight edge once peeled off.

Tip for today: a single wind-blown ear adds movement and makes the beach setting feel real.

You Will Need

• painter’s tape for a straight horizon line

Palette: Sandy Beige,Sky Blue,Wiry Grey-Brown,White

Capture pure joy next with a dachshund caught mid-run, ears streaming backward. This is a perspective and motion piece, so set the dog slightly below your own eye line as if you are crouched down watching it race toward you, which stretches the body forward and makes the pose feel fast rather than static.

Paint the body first in a dynamic diagonal lean, front legs stretched forward and back legs tucked, then add the ears last as soft curved shapes trailing well behind the head, exaggerate their length more than feels natural since that exaggeration is what reads as speed on a still canvas. A few short motion lines behind the ears and tail reinforce it further.

If the pose looks stiff, check that no part of the dog is perfectly vertical or horizontal, speed reads through diagonal lines. No wide canvas on hand, a square format still works if you angle the dog across the diagonal.

Finish with a light dust puff near the back paws for extra energy.

Palette: Chocolate Brown,Cream,Sky Blue,White

Soften the pace with an odd-couple favorite, a dachshund and a cat curled up sharing one bed. Start with the bed shape as a simple soft oval, then build the two animals as interlocking curved forms, the dachshund’s long body wrapping around or alongside the cat’s rounder one, so they read as one cozy mass rather than two separate paintings pushed together.

Work the darker animal first if one is markedly darker, usually the cat, so you can judge the dog’s lighter tone against it rather than guessing. Keep both faces simple and sleepy, closed or half-closed eyes do more charm work here than wide open ones.

The easy mistake is giving them equal size and making the scene flat, so let one, usually the dachshund stretched along the edge, dominate the space while the cat tucks into a smaller curl. If you enjoy pairing unlikely animal friends, the cat coloring pages collection has more cat expressions worth studying for the sleepy face.

Tip for today: one shared blanket edge draped over both animals ties the whole composition together.

Palette: Charcoal Grey,Chocolate Brown,Cream,Dusty Blue

Bring a bit of gentle comedy in with a dachshund wearing the classic plastic cone, looking thoroughly unimpressed. Draw the cone first as a simple translucent trumpet shape around the head, keeping the lines loose since the cone is clear plastic and should feel light rather than solid.

For the cone’s translucency, paint the dog’s face and ear fully first, let it dry, then glaze a thin, almost see-through layer of white or pale grey over the cone area so the face shows faintly through, this single glazing step is what separates a believable plastic cone from a solid white triangle stuck on the dog’s head.

Keep the expression doing the comedy, a flat unimpressed mouth and lowered brow line reads instantly as that particular dog mood. If the glaze goes on too opaque and hides the face completely, wipe it back gently with a damp cloth while still wet.

Finish with one small reflective highlight streak on the cone’s edge to help sell the plastic.

Palette: Chocolate Brown,Pale Grey,White,Cream

Double the charm with two dachshunds tucked side by side under one long knitted scarf. Block in both bodies first as two parallel curved shapes close together, then drape the scarf across both necks as one continuous striped band, which is what makes clear they are sharing it rather than each wearing a separate one.

If you have not painted two dogs in one composition before, start simple: make them a matching pair in similar tones so you are not juggling two different coats at once, and vary them instead through pose, one looking forward and one looking sideways, which adds interest without adding difficulty.

Paint the scarf stripes with a small flat brush in alternating colors, keeping the stripe lines slightly uneven since hand-knitted texture should never look ruler straight. If the two dogs start to blend into one shape, separate them with a thin shadow line where their bodies meet.

Tip for today: let the scarf ends trail off one side of the canvas for a bit of movement.

Palette: Chocolate Brown,Tan,Mustard Yellow,Cream

Close out the dachshund section with a small parade, several dachshunds trotting together through a park like a tiny regiment. This is the most involved piece in the group so give it the full session: start with a simple park background, a strip of green and a few loose tree shapes, then place the dogs in a loose diagonal line receding into the distance.

Use size and placement for the perspective trick here, the front dog should be noticeably larger and lower in the frame while each dog behind it gets slightly smaller and higher, this simple scaling is what creates the feeling of a line stretching back rather than dogs just scattered randomly across the canvas.

Keep the front dog the most detailed, with a clear face and coat texture, and let the dogs further back simplify into looser brown shapes with minimal features, your eye naturally fills in the rest. If the line feels static, vary their leg positions slightly so the parade feels like it is actually moving.

Tip for today: a line of small flags or bunting strung above the park adds a festive finishing touch.

Palette: Sap Green,Chocolate Brown,Tan,Sky Blue

Shift breeds now with a French bulldog wearing a tilted beret, equal parts silly and chic. Start with the bulldog’s broad, square head shape, since getting those wide jowls and bat ears right early is what reads as a Frenchie rather than any generic squashed-face dog, then tilt the beret at a jaunty angle resting on one ear.

Paint the beret in one flat bold color first and let it dry completely before adding the dog’s face on top, this keeps the edge between hat and ear crisp rather than muddy. The bat ears are the trickiest proportion here, they should sit high and wide, roughly as tall as the head itself, so measure against the head height before committing to the final size.

If the face looks too flat, add a touch of darker shadow in the wrinkle folds around the nose and mouth, Frenchies carry a lot of character in those creases. No beret reference in mind, any simple rounded cap shape with a small stem on top reads as one.

Finish with a small paint pen outline around the beret for crispness.

Palette: Fawn,Charcoal Grey,Burgundy,Cream

Bring in some energy with a Jack Russell terrier, mouth clamped around a tennis ball and body practically vibrating with excitement. Sketch the body low and alert, weight forward on the front paws, before adding the ball held firmly in the mouth as the clear focal point of the piece.

If this is your first time painting a mostly white dog, remember white coats are rarely pure white in paint, mix a touch of pale grey or cream into your white for the base coat and save pure white only for the brightest highlight along the back, otherwise the dog looks flat and paper-cut rather than three dimensional.

Paint the brown or black patches next in simple solid shapes, Jack Russells tend to have a patch over one eye or ear which adds instant personality, then the ball last in a slightly acid green with a few curved seam lines. If the white areas look too stark against the background, warm the background slightly with a cream tint rather than leaving it pure white.

Tip for today: a slight open-mouth grin around the ball sells the eagerness instantly.

Palette: Off White,Chestnut Brown,Tennis Green,Charcoal Grey

Cozy things up with a pug burrito, wrapped snugly in a soft blanket with just the wrinkled face poking out. Start with the blanket as one large soft rounded shape taking up most of the canvas, then carve out a small opening near the top for the pug’s face, this order keeps the blanket feeling heavy and enveloping rather than an afterthought wrapped loosely around the dog.

The pug’s wrinkles are the whole personality here, so once the base face color is dry, use a small brush loaded with a slightly darker tone to paint the fold lines around the forehead and muzzle in short curved strokes, following the way skin actually bunches rather than drawing straight lines. Too many wrinkles can clutter a small face, so stop once the expression reads clearly.

Keep the blanket pattern simple, plaid or a few soft stripes, so it does not compete with the face. No fine brush for the wrinkle lines, the tip of a cotton swab dipped lightly in paint can work in a pinch for soft marks.

Finish with one bright button or patch detail on the blanket corner.

Palette: Fawn,Charcoal Grey,Soft Blue,Cream

Give the chihuahua its glamour moment, peeking out of the top of an open handbag. Draw the handbag shape first as a simple structured rectangle with rounded corners and short handles, then nest the chihuahua’s small head and front paws over the top rim, exaggerating the head slightly larger than strictly accurate since chihuahuas are famous for big expressive eyes and ears relative to body size.

Keep the quick version to ten minutes if you are short on time: flat bag color, simple head shape, two large dark eyes and pointed ears, done, it still reads instantly. The forty-minute version adds a quilted pattern stitched into the bag with a thin brush, a glossy highlight along the bag’s clasp, and finer short strokes in the chihuahua’s coat for a silkier finish.

The usual trouble spot is the eyes going too big and turning cartoonish in a bad way, so place them at roughly a third of the head’s height down from the top rather than dead center. No structured rectangle guide, a simple rounded trapezoid shape for the bag works just as well.

Tip for today: one small bow or tag on the bag strap adds a nice finishing detail.

Palette: Tan,Chocolate Brown,Gold,Cream

Keep the pampered theme going with a fluffy Pomeranian riding in its own little stroller. Build the stroller frame first as a simple light structure of thin curved lines, then paint the Pomeranian’s round fluffy body sitting inside it, bigger and rounder than the frame itself since that size contrast is exactly the joke.

The fur here needs volume rather than detail, so load a round brush generously and stipple, dabbing rather than stroking, in overlapping circles of two or three close cream and tan tones to build a soft fluffy mass before any darker shading goes on top. Resist the urge to outline every tuft, the stippled texture does that work for you.

If the stroller frame looks too heavy and competes with the fluffy dog, thin the lines down or paint them in a lighter grey rather than black. No round brush for stippling, a flat brush dabbed on its corner gives a similar broken texture.

Finish with one small shiny wheel highlight to ground the stroller on the ground.

Palette: Cream,Apricot Tan,Light Grey,White

Take the beagle outdoors for a nose-to-the-ground moment along a woodland trail. Set the eye level low here, almost at the dog’s own height looking along the path rather than down at it, since that viewpoint is what makes the scene feel like you are following the beagle rather than watching it from above.

Paint the trail as a simple curved path receding between loose tree shapes, keeping everything in the background softer and cooler in tone so the beagle in the foreground, warmer and sharper, pulls forward naturally. The nose down to the ground pose is the key gesture, so draw the head low and the back slightly arched before anything else.

The tricolor coat, black, tan and white, is simplest painted as three clear solid patches rather than blended, with the edges softened only slightly once dry using a clean damp brush. If you do not have a trail reference in mind, a simple dirt path between two patches of green reads clearly enough.

Tip for today: a few fallen leaves scattered along the path add a nice seasonal touch.

Palette: Tan,Black,White,Forest Green

Let the Cavalier King Charles spaniel have its elegant moment, draped across a small chaise longue like a tiny aristocrat. Paint the chaise first as a simple curved piece of furniture in a soft color, then place the dog along its length with the long silky ears draping down over the edge, since those ears are the breed’s defining feature and deserve the most attention.

For the ears, once the base coat is dry, use a soft brush and long, slightly wavy strokes in a slightly darker tone to suggest silky waves rather than a flat solid shape, this single pass does more for the breed’s likeness than any other detail in the piece. Keep the strokes flowing in one direction, from the head downward.

If the ears end up looking heavy or stiff, thin them visually by adding a few lighter strokes back through the dark ones once everything is dry. No chaise longue in mind, a simple curved bench or even a rolled cushion works as a stand in.

Finish with a small pearl or jewel tone accent on the chaise fabric for that aristocratic touch.

Palette: Chestnut Brown,Cream,Dusty Rose,Gold

Keep the energy up with a Boston terrier sporting a bandana knotted around its neck, tuxedo markings and all. Block in the body first in the classic black and white pattern as two or three clean solid shapes rather than trying to blend them, Boston terriers read instantly through that crisp contrast, then add the bandana last in a bold contrasting color.

If this is your first time painting a tuxedo pattern, work light to dark: paint the white chest and face patches first, let them dry fully, then paint the black sections around them, this order keeps the white crisp instead of getting muddied by black paint dragging into it while wet.

The large upright ears and round eyes are where the personality lives, so keep those sharp and clean even if the rest of the coat stays loose. No bold bandana color on hand, even a simple red or navy works well against the black and white coat.

Tip for today: a tiny knot detail where the bandana ties adds a surprising amount of charm for very little extra work.

Palette: Black,White,Cherry Red,Cream

Send the West Highland terrier out into the snow for a bright winter scene with real contrast to work with. Paint the snowy background first in cool white and pale blue shadow tones, since establishing that cold backdrop early tells you exactly how warm or cool to mix the white of the dog’s coat against it, pure white dog against pure white snow goes flat without that planning.

Keep the Westie’s coat slightly warmer and brighter than the snow, a touch of cream mixed in, and use the snow’s blue-grey shadow tone to carve the dog’s shape along its underside and legs rather than a hard black outline, this is what separates a dog sitting in snow from a dog pasted on top of it. Add a few loose paw prints trailing behind for extra charm.

If the contrast still feels too flat, deepen the shadow side of the dog slightly more than feels comfortable, winter light is often harsher than expected. No pale blue on hand, a touch of grey mixed into white gives a similar cool shadow.

Tip for today: a single red collar or scarf gives the whole cool scene one warm focal point.

Palette: Titanium White,Pale Blue,Cream,Cherry Red

Bring back the pampered look with a shih tzu, its signature topknot tied up with a little bow above flowing facial fur. Start with the head shape wide and round, then build the topknot as a small raised bundle at the crown before the rest of the long facial fur drapes down around it, getting that order right keeps the topknot looking tied up rather than just another tuft of fur.

The long facial fur is the main technical challenge here, so once the base face color is dry, use a fine brush and long downward strokes in slightly varying tones of cream and tan to build layered strands, working from the topknot outward so the hair appears to radiate naturally from that tied point. Leave the dark round eyes peeking through rather than hidden completely.

If the fur strands start looking too uniform and stripey, vary the pressure and length of each stroke, real fur is never perfectly even. No fine brush for the strands, a liner brush or even the tip of a round brush loaded thin works well.

Finish with a small bright bow on the topknot as the one pop of color.

Palette: Cream,Tan,Black,Hot Pink

Switch to something sleeker with a whippet wearing a fitted coat, all long lean lines and quiet elegance. Sketch the body first as a series of smooth curved lines, the deep chest, the tucked waist, the long legs, since whippets are built almost entirely of graceful curves and getting that silhouette right before adding the coat is what makes the breed recognizable.

The coat should hug those curves rather than hide them, so paint it as a single smooth shape following the body’s line, with a fitted strap or buckle detail at the chest to show it is actually worn rather than just a blanket draped on top. Keep the exposed legs and head lean and smooth, with minimal shading, whippets have very little loose skin or fur to texture.

If the body ends up looking too bulky or stiff, narrow the waist tuck further than feels natural, that exaggerated curve is what reads as whippet rather than a generic dog in a coat. No fitted coat reference, a simple snug rectangle wrapped around the torso with a strap line reads clearly enough.

Tip for today: keep the background plain so the elegant silhouette stays the clear focus.

Palette: Charcoal Grey,Soft Fawn,Navy,Cream

Have some fun with a toy poodle mid-groom, half-trimmed with a comically uneven haircut. Paint one side of the dog’s body with the full fluffy pompom texture using small stippled dabs of a round brush, then paint the other side much shorter and smoother, this contrast between textures across one body is the whole joke and is worth exaggerating clearly rather than blending the two sides together.

If this is your first time varying texture within a single animal, work the fluffy side first since stippling takes longer to build up, then switch brushes entirely, a flat brush works well, for the short smooth side so the two textures feel genuinely different rather than just lighter and darker versions of the same mark.

Keep the face and expression a little exasperated or startled, which adds to the comedy of the half-finished look. No round brush for the pompom texture, a sponge dabbed lightly in paint creates a similar fluffy mottled surface.

Tip for today: a grooming cape or towel draped around the shoulders anchors the scene immediately.

You Will Need

• a small sponge for stippled fluffy texture

Palette: White,Cream,Light Grey,Soft Blue

Bring things back to a quiet moment with a Yorkshire terrier curled up on someone’s lap, only the lap itself, a simple patch of denim or fabric, visible in the frame. Paint the lap fabric first as a soft rounded base shape, then nest the small Yorkie body on top, keeping the scale clearly tiny against that larger shape.

The silky coat is the main feature, so once the base tan and steel-blue tones are blocked in following the breed’s real coloring, use long smooth strokes with a soft brush to blend the two tones gently into each other along the back, Yorkie coats are famously glossy and straight rather than fluffy, so resist any stippling or choppy texture here.

If the coat ends up looking too flat and solid, add one or two thin highlight strokes along the top of the back where light would catch straight hair. No denim lap to reference, any simple soft fabric patch in a muted color works as the base.

Tip for today: a small bow matching the Yorkie’s traditional topknot style adds a nice familiar detail.

Palette: Steel Blue,Tan,Denim Blue,Cream

Add some action with a French bulldog balancing, somewhat improbably, on a skateboard. Draw the skateboard first as a simple flat deck with two wheel shapes, angled slightly as if rolling, then place the bulldog’s low, sturdy body on top with legs braced wide for balance, that wide stance is what makes the pose convincing rather than looking like the dog is about to fall off.

This is a nice chance to add variety if you already painted the beret Frenchie earlier in this list: try a different coat color, brindle instead of fawn, or add sunglasses or a bandana this time so the two paintings feel like a pair rather than a repeat. Small changes like that are an easy way to get more mileage from one subject you already enjoy painting.

Keep the skateboard’s wheels slightly blurred with a quick dry brush streak to suggest motion. If the bulldog’s stance looks too stiff, round out the belly and lower the center of gravity slightly, Frenchies are built low and solid.

Tip for today: a small motion cloud or dust puff behind the back wheel finishes the action nicely.

Palette: Brindle Brown,Cream,Charcoal Grey,Orange

Cool off with a pug lounging on an inflatable pool float, the picture of summer laziness. Paint the pool water first as a flat bright blue with a few lighter squiggly reflection lines, then the float on top as a bold simple ring or swan shape, and finally the pug draped across it last so the layering order keeps each edge clean.

For the water’s shimmer, once the blue base is fully dry, drag a nearly dry brush loaded with white lightly across the surface in short horizontal flicks, this lifting technique creates a broken sparkle effect far more convincing than trying to paint individual reflection dots one at a time. Keep the flicks random rather than evenly spaced.

If the float and pug blend together in color, separate them with a thin shadow line where the dog’s weight presses the float down slightly. No bright pool blue on hand, a simple turquoise mixed from blue and a touch of white works well.

Tip for today: a pair of tiny doggy sunglasses pushed up on the forehead adds instant summer humor.

Palette: Pool Blue,Fawn,White,Hot Pink

Catch the beagle in the act again, trotting off proudly with a stolen sock dangling from its mouth. Paint the body in a confident forward trot, head held high, since the whole comedy of this pose depends on the dog looking proud rather than guilty, then add the sock last, hanging loosely from one side of the mouth in a bright mismatched pattern.

If you enjoyed the earlier beagle on the trail, vary this one by changing the pose from nose-down searching to head-up strutting, and swap the tricolor patches to slightly different placements, small variations like this keep repeated subjects feeling fresh rather than copied. Keep the stolen object small and bright so it reads clearly against the dog’s coat.

The trickiest part is the sock hanging convincingly from the mouth rather than looking glued on, so paint a small shadow where it meets the lips and let the fabric droop with a slight curve rather than hanging perfectly straight. No patterned sock in mind, plain bright stripes read just as well.

Tip for today: a slightly squinted, pleased expression sells the mischief completely.

Palette: Tan,Black,White,Striped Orange

Close the list on a quiet, cozy note with a basset hound wading through a pile of fallen autumn leaves, those enormous ears nearly dragging on the ground. Build the body low and solid first, close to the ground as bassets naturally sit, then paint the ears as two long soft shapes draped down well past the jawline, exaggerating their length slightly more than feels right since that length is the entire personality of the breed.

Scatter the leaves around the paws using a small flat brush dabbed in warm autumn tones, orange, rust, ochre, varying the size and angle of each dab so the pile feels random rather than patterned, and let a few leaves overlap the lower edge of the dog’s body to really sit it into the scene. The droopy, soulful eyes deserve one extra pass of a darker brown around the lower lid for that classic sleepy basset look.

If the ears look stiff, add a slight curl or fold near the tips, real basset ears rarely hang perfectly flat. No autumn leaf reference handy, simple teardrop shapes in warm tones read clearly as falling leaves.

Tip for today: one leaf caught mid-air near the dog’s head adds a nice sense of a breezy day.

Palette: Rust Orange,Ochre,Chocolate Brown,Cream

What to Do Next

Pick whichever dog made you smile first, that is usually the one you will actually finish, and start it today on a canvas board small enough to sit on your lap or kitchen table. Block in the big shapes before anything else, let each layer dry, and save the face and final highlights for last.

A pre-primed canvas board under sixteen inches works best for beginners. It gives acrylic a smooth, slightly absorbent surface that dries quickly between layers, and the smaller size keeps the long dachshund shape manageable in one sitting.

How do you get a dachshund’s proportions right in a painting?

Compare the body length to the shoulder height before you paint any details. A dachshund’s body is roughly twice as long as it is tall, and marking that ratio lightly in pencil first stops the dog from looking stretched or squashed.

What colors do I need for painting dachshunds and small dogs?

A warm palette of chocolate brown, tan, cream and white covers most coat colors on this list. Add one bright accent, red, yellow or pink, per painting for the costume or prop, plus black and grey for markings and shadows.

How do I make a dog’s fur look soft instead of flat in acrylic?

Use a dry, stiff brush in short strokes that follow the direction the fur grows, rather than one flat block of color. Lifting a little wet paint with a damp cloth along the edges also softens hard outlines into something furrier.

Can I paint these dachshund ideas without any painting experience?

Yes, every idea on this list starts from simple blocked-in shapes before any detail goes in. Working largest shapes first, then faces and textures last, makes each piece achievable in one sitting even for a first attempt.
