37 Sketchbook Doodles of Forest Animals With Odd Little Habits

Sketchbook doodles work best when the subject already has a story inside it, so a scene reads as a joke or a small moment rather than just an animal standing there. Every idea below gives a forest creature an odd little habit: a fox with a book, a snail hauling its whole house, a bear who fishes from the sky. Pick one and you can finish it before the kettle boils.

This list suits anyone with a black fineliner, a few minutes, and a notebook page that does not need to be perfect. Coral and mint marker add just enough color to lift each doodle without turning it into a painting. They go from the simplest sketch to the more involved scenes, so start wherever your pen feels ready.

Fox Reading Under a Mushroom

Start with an oval for the fox’s curled body, tucked small under the mushroom cap like a cushion. Simple shapes carry this whole scene, so resist adding fur texture at this stage and let the outline do the work.

Draw the mushroom second, a tall stem with a wide cap tilted slightly so it reads as shelter rather than a random shape beside the fox. Add the tiny open book last, just two curved lines meeting at a spine, propped against a front paw.

Color the mushroom cap coral and leave the fox plain, so the eye lands on the fox first and the mushroom second. One tip for today: draw the fox’s eyes closed or half lidded, since a sleepy or absorbed expression sells the quiet mood faster than any detail around it.

Snail Carrying a Tiny House

Put down the flower stem first, one long curved line from bottom to top of the page, since everything else in this doodle has to sit along it. Mark the snail’s position about two thirds up the stem before drawing anything else.

Next comes the shell, drawn not as a plain spiral but as a tiny house with a little roof and a window, so the joke of the scene reads clearly. The snail’s body and stretched neck go last, reaching toward a flower bloom at the very top of the stem.

Shade the roof mint and the flower petals coral so the two accents sit far apart on the page and balance each other. Quick tip: keep the snail’s foot touching the stem at a slight angle, never flat against it, or the whole pose looks like it is standing on a shelf instead of climbing.

Bear Fishing From a Cloud

Measure the cloud as roughly twice as wide as the bear sitting on it, since a cloud that is too small makes the bear look like it is about to fall through. Draw the cloud first as a row of overlapping bumps, flat along the bottom where the bear will sit.

Place the bear next, legs dangling off the cloud’s edge, body about one and a half heads tall so it stays round and friendly rather than realistic. The fishing line drops straight down off the page edge, with a small fish shape jumping up to meet the hook rather than waiting below.

Fill the cloud with a light mint tint and leave the bear’s fur as plain outline so the two shapes stay distinct. Today’s tip: angle the fishing rod slightly, never perfectly vertical, so the whole pose feels relaxed instead of stiff.

Bird Knitting Its Own Nest

Sketch the bird’s body first as a plump teardrop shape, since the whole gag depends on the bird looking settled and busy rather than mid flight. Keep the wings tucked close to the body with just a short curved line for each.

The nest comes next, drawn not as a tangle of twigs but with a few looping lines that suggest yarn, wrapped loosely around the bird’s lower half. Two tiny knitting needles poke out from under one wing, holding a single loose stitch.

A common mistake here is making the nest too neat and round, which hides the joke. Loosen the lines halfway through if that happens, letting a few yarn ends trail off the edge. Color one yarn strand coral and dot a few mint leaves nearby for a finished touch you can add in under a minute.

Hedgehog Sweeping Leaves

Give the hedgehog ten minutes and it still works: round body, triangle nose, a few short spikes along the back, and a tiny broom held in one paw. That is the whole quick version, and it already reads clearly as a hedgehog doing chores.

The forty minute version adds a proper doorstep, a small round door built into a tree trunk behind the hedgehog, with a pile of swept leaves gathered to one side. Draw the doorframe before the leaves so the pile has somewhere specific to sit.

Mint works well for the door and coral for a few of the swept leaves, leaving the rest plain so the color does not crowd the small scene. One tip worth remembering today: angle the broom bristles so they clearly meet the ground, since a broom floating above the leaf pile breaks the whole image.

Squirrel Mailing a Letter

Draw the tree stump mailbox first, a short stump with a tiny flag and a slot cut into the side, since the squirrel’s pose depends on reaching toward it. Keep the stump about the same height as the squirrel standing on its back legs.

Next add the squirrel’s body, tail curling up behind like a question mark, one paw holding a small folded letter toward the slot. The bushy tail should take up nearly as much space as the body itself, a useful proportion trick for any squirrel doodle.

Color the little mail flag coral so it reads instantly as the focal point of the scene. For next time, try the same squirrel mailing a leaf instead of a letter, or swap the stump mailbox for a hollow log.

Owl Reading by Lantern Light

Picture the eye level low, as if looking up at the owl from the forest floor, which makes the branch the owl sits on curve slightly downward at both ends. This small shift in perspective gives the whole doodle a cozy, sheltered feel instead of a flat side view.

Light comes from the small lantern hanging beside the owl, so keep that side of the owl’s face slightly rounder and leave the opposite side as plain outline, suggesting shadow without any shading pencil. A tiny open book rests on the branch under one wing.

Fill the lantern glow with a soft coral tint spreading just past its edges. One tip for today: draw the owl’s eyes as two simple circles rather than almond shapes, since round eyes read as curious and alert, which suits a night reader perfectly.

Rabbit Watering Tiny Mushrooms

Start with the row of mushrooms along the bottom of the page, three or four different heights, before drawing the rabbit at all. Getting the mushroom heights uneven first gives the rabbit something specific to lean toward later.

Draw the rabbit next, crouched low with ears folded back rather than upright, which keeps the pose calm and focused on the task. A tiny watering can tips forward from both front paws, with a few curved drip lines falling onto the mushroom caps.

Mint suits the mushroom stems and coral works well for one or two caps, keeping the palette balanced across the row. Quick tip: curve the drip lines slightly rather than drawing them straight, since straight lines read as rain rather than a careful, deliberate pour.

Deer Wearing a Flower Crown

Measure the antlers as roughly the same height as the deer’s head and neck combined, since antlers drawn too small disappear and too large overwhelm the face. Sketch them as simple forked lines rather than full branching racks for a doodle at this level.

Draw the flower crown second, a few small blooms and leaves threaded along the base of the antlers, with the deer’s face and large eyes added last so the expression anchors the whole piece.

If you tried an idea like cat pencil drawing ideas before, the same gentle oval eye shape works well on a deer too. Color two or three crown flowers coral and leave the rest as outline so the crown does not compete with the deer’s face.

Mouse Baking a Tiny Pie

The usual mistake with a kitchen scene like this is drawing the oven and table before the mouse, which leaves no good space for the character itself. Draw the mouse first, standing upright with an apron tied at the waist, then build the small table around it.

A tiny pie sits on the table in front of the mouse, steam lines curling up in two or three short strokes. Keep the oven in the background smaller than the mouse so it reads as a prop rather than competing for attention.

Color the pie crust coral with a mint leaf vent cut into the top. Fix the scene halfway through if the mouse ends up too large for the table, simply redraw the table a little wider rather than shrinking the mouse.

Raccoon Washing Berries in a Stream

Keep the stream as two or three wavy parallel lines running across the lower third of the page, drawn before the raccoon so its paws have a clear edge to dip into. A stream drawn after the raccoon tends to crowd awkwardly around the feet.

Draw the raccoon crouched at the stream’s edge, both front paws cupped together holding a small round berry, its mask marking added last so the face reads clearly without extra lines.

This washing habit is a real raccoon trait, which makes the scene feel grounded rather than invented. Mint suits the water ripples and coral works for the berry itself. One tip: leave a few gaps of white paper inside the ripple lines, since solid ink across water flattens it instead of making it shimmer.

Badger Reading a Map by Torchlight

Place the light source at the small torch held in the badger’s paw, which means the map it illuminates should be the brightest shape on the page and everything behind the badger stays as plain outline or soft shadow.

Draw the badger’s distinctive face stripes early, since they anchor the whole character and are easy to lose if added as an afterthought. The map unrolls across both paws, a few simple wavy lines standing in for drawn terrain.

Color the torch flame coral, letting a faint coral glow spread just over the map’s edge. Quick tip for today: keep the badger’s stance slightly hunched forward, which reads as concentration far better than a straight upright pose.

Frog Playing a Leaf Like a Banjo

Build the frog’s body as two stacked ovals, a larger one for the lower body and a smaller one for the head, which is the quickest way to keep frog proportions looking right without studying anatomy.

The leaf banjo comes next, one long leaf stem doubling as the neck and a rounder leaf as the body, with three or four thin lines stretched across as strings. Draw the frog’s long fingers wrapped around the neck last.

Mint suits the leaf banjo perfectly since it is already leaf shaped and leaf colored in spirit. Coral works well as a small flower tucked behind the frog’s ear instead. For variety next time, swap the banjo for a leaf drum or a reed flute.

Turtle Carrying a Garden on Its Shell

Sketch the shell first as a simple dome, then divide it into three or four sections with light curved lines before adding any plants, since a garden drawn without that grid tends to pile up unevenly on one side.

Fill each shell section with a different small plant: a tiny mushroom, a short grass tuft, a single flower. The turtle’s head and legs stay small and simple, drawn last so they do not pull focus from the shell garden.

Readers who enjoyed the layered patterns in watercolor zentangle flowers will find a similar pleasure in filling each shell section differently. Color one flower coral and one grass tuft mint to keep the shell balanced rather than busy.

Weasel Delivering the Morning Paper

Draw the rolled paper first, a simple tube shape tucked under one arm, since its size sets the scale for the weasel’s whole body stretching to carry it.

The weasel’s long low body comes next, drawn in a stretched running pose with all four legs slightly off the ground to suggest motion rather than a standing still figure. A small ribbon or string around the paper roll adds a nice finishing detail.

Color the string coral so it stands out clearly against the plain paper roll. One tip for today: curve the weasel’s spine slightly rather than drawing it straight, since a straight-backed weasel looks stiff and a curved one looks like it is mid-stride.

Beaver Building a Tiny Bridge

Place the eye level at the water’s surface, looking slightly up at the beaver standing on a half-built bridge of small logs, which makes the logs read as stacked rather than flat on the page.

Draw three or four short logs crossing the stream first, leaving a gap in the middle where the beaver stands holding one more log ready to place. The beaver’s flat tail rests on the ground behind for balance.

Mint suits a patch of grass or moss on the near bank, and coral works as a small flag planted at one end of the bridge. Quick tip: keep the logs slightly uneven in length, since perfectly matched logs look drawn with a ruler instead of gathered by paws.

Chipmunk Collecting Rain in Acorn Caps

Line up three or four acorn caps across the page first, each a slightly different size, since the chipmunk’s pose will depend on reaching toward whichever cap sits nearest.

Draw a few short diagonal lines above the caps to suggest light rain, then add the chipmunk crouched beside the nearest cap with both paws steadying it. Striped markings along the back go last, once the pose is settled.

Color one acorn cap coral to catch the eye immediately, leaving the rest plain outline. For a quick ten minute version, draw just one acorn cap and one chipmunk; the forty minute version adds the full row and the rain lines above.

Crow Collecting Shiny Buttons

Build the crow’s body as one solid dark shape first, since crows read instantly from silhouette alone and the fineliner can fill most of the body with only a few gaps left for shine along the wing.

Scatter two or three small round shapes near the crow’s feet before drawing the beak reaching toward the nearest one, which sets up the whole story of the doodle in a single glance.

Color one round object coral and leave the crow almost entirely black for contrast. One tip for today: leave a thin white line along the crow’s back where light would catch feathers, since a fully solid black shape without any break looks flat instead of glossy.

Otter Floating With a Pebble on Its Belly

Draw the water line first as one long horizontal stroke, since the otter floats along it on its back and everything about the pose depends on staying level with that line.

The otter’s body goes next, a long curved shape floating belly up, with a small flat pebble balanced where the chest meets the stomach. Short paws rest loosely at the sides rather than gripping anything.

A few concentric ripple lines fanning out from the otter’s body suggest gentle floating water. Mint works nicely for the ripples and coral for the pebble itself. Quick tip: keep the otter’s eyes closed, since an otter at rest reads far calmer than one with wide open eyes.

Fawn Following a Trail of Fireflies

Keep the fawn small and the fireflies scattered loosely above and ahead of it, since the light source here comes from several tiny points rather than one strong glow, which changes how shadows fall across the fawn’s back.

Draw the fawn’s legs slightly bent mid-step, following a gentle curved path of three or four fireflies drawn as small dots with short light rays. The fawn’s spotted coat can be added last with a few scattered small ovals.

Color each firefly a soft coral glow rather than leaving them plain black dots. One tip for today: space the fireflies unevenly along the path, since perfectly even spacing looks like a drawn line instead of scattered light.

Porcupine Carrying Berries on Its Quills

Sketch the porcupine’s round body and short legs first, then add the quills as a series of short outward lines along the back, spacing them slightly irregular rather than in a perfect row.

Thread two or three small round berries onto a few of the quill tips, drawn as simple circles skewered near the end of each line. This habit gives the whole doodle its joke without needing any facial expression to carry it.

Color the berries coral against the plain quills for instant contrast. If you like small creatures with a job to do, the humor here pairs well with the practical stance in food doodle ideas, where objects carry their own little purpose too.

Woodpecker Carving a Tiny Sign

Place the tree trunk vertically down one side of the page first, giving the woodpecker a clear surface to work against before anything else is drawn.

Carve a small rectangular sign shape into the bark, left rough and unfinished with a few wood shaving lines falling below it. The woodpecker clings sideways to the trunk, beak touching the edge of the carved letters.

Mint suits a small leaf or vine growing near the sign, and coral works well as a single painted letter already finished on the sign. One tip for today: angle the woodpecker’s tail stiffly against the bark, since that brace is what makes the clinging pose look stable rather than floating beside the trunk.

Hare Stargazing From a Hilltop

Set the eye level low and looking slightly up, with the hare’s long ears breaking the horizon line against a sky full of small star dots, which gives the whole scene a sense of quiet scale.

Draw the hilltop first as one gentle curved line across the lower page, then the hare sitting upright on it, ears tall and slightly apart rather than pinned together. Scatter stars last, keeping them small and varied in size.

Color a few stars coral instead of leaving them all plain, and shade the hill lightly mint. Quick tip: keep the hare’s front paws resting together rather than reaching for anything, since stillness suits a stargazing pose better than an active one.

Skunk Picking Wildflowers for a Vase

Start with the small vase sitting on the ground, since its size decides how tall the flowers can grow and how far the skunk has to reach to add the next stem.

Draw the skunk reaching with one paw toward a nearby flower, tail held high and curved rather than dragging on the ground, which keeps the pose lively. Add two or three flowers already in the vase before drawing the one about to be picked.

Color the vase mint and one flower bloom coral so the eye travels naturally from vase to flower to skunk. One tip: keep the white stripe down the skunk’s back slightly wavy rather than a straight ruled line, since a straight stripe looks stiff on a soft rounded body.

Vole Riding a Leaf Boat Downstream

Draw the stream banks as two curved lines angled toward each other in the distance, which sets up a simple one point perspective so the leaf boat appears to be floating toward the viewer rather than sideways across the page.

The leaf itself sits lower in the water at the back and slightly higher at the front edge, following that same perspective line. The vole stands balanced in the middle, both paws out for balance rather than gripping the leaf’s edge.

Mint suits the leaf boat naturally, and coral works as a tiny flag mast rising from its center. One tip for today: add two or three short curved lines trailing behind the leaf to suggest its wake, since a boat without any trailing water looks stuck in place.

Toad Running a Tiny Mushroom Stall

Build the stall first as a simple table shape with a small awning overhead, since the toad’s pose and the goods on display both depend on having that structure in place.

Line up three or four tiny mushrooms of different shapes along the table, then draw the toad standing behind it with one webbed hand gesturing toward the display. Keep the toad’s body low and wide, true to its natural shape.

Color the awning coral in alternating stripes, and shade one mushroom mint for variety. Quick tip: keep the toad’s mouth in a simple closed curve, since a toad doodle reads as friendly with almost no change beyond that single line.

Lynx Tracking Pawprints in Snow

Lay down a trail of simple pawprint shapes across the lower page first, spaced in a slight curve rather than a straight line, since the lynx’s head and body will turn to follow that curve.

Draw the lynx mid-stride, head lowered and ears tufted, following its own trail of prints back toward the edge of the page. Keep the legs slightly bent to suggest careful, quiet movement through snow.

Shade a faint mint tint across the snow and leave the pawprints as plain outline dents. One tip for today: taper the lynx’s tufted ears to a fine point rather than a rounded one, since that small detail is what separates a lynx silhouette from a generic cat shape.

Dormouse Sleeping in a Teacup

Measure the teacup as roughly the same width as the curled dormouse inside it, since a cup too large leaves awkward empty space and one too small makes the mouse look squeezed rather than cozy.

Draw the cup first with its handle and saucer, then curl the dormouse inside, tail wrapped around its own body and nose tucked under one paw. A small steam curl or two above the cup suggests warmth without needing any extra detail.

Color the cup’s rim coral and the saucer mint for a tidy matched pair. If this slow, sleepy mood appeals, it pairs naturally with the quiet scenes found throughout winter doodle ideas for the same cozy feeling.

Stoat Stealing a Picked Flower Crown

Draw the discarded flower crown first, lying slightly askew on the ground as if just set down, since the stoat’s whole pose revolves around sneaking toward it rather than wearing it outright.

The stoat’s long low body stretches forward in a low crouch, one paw already touching the crown’s edge. Keep the ears perked and alert, eyes wide, to sell the sense of a quiet little heist in progress.

Color two crown flowers coral and leave the stoat’s coat as plain outline so the crown stays the brightest part of the scene. One tip for today: keep the stoat’s tail slightly raised rather than dragging, which adds a touch of mischief to the pose.

Heron Fishing With a Lantern

Set the light source at a small lantern hanging from the heron’s beak or a nearby reed, which means the water just below it should carry the brightest ripple marks while the rest of the pond stays plain outline.

Draw the heron’s long legs first, planted in shallow water, then the tall curved neck and narrow beak holding the lantern’s handle. A single fish shape swims just below the lit patch of water, drawn last.

Color the lantern glow coral and a few reeds mint along the water’s edge. One tip for today: keep the heron’s neck in a soft S curve rather than straight, since that curve is what gives herons their recognizable silhouette.

Boar Rolling a Pinecone Uphill

Angle the hill as a diagonal line running from the bottom corner to the upper half of the page, since that slope is what makes the pushed pinecone believable rather than just a round shape sitting beside the boar.

Draw the pinecone first at the base of the slope, oversized compared to the boar’s snout, then the boar leaning into it with lowered head and braced front legs. Short grass tufts along the hillside go in last.

Mint suits the grass tufts and coral works as a small flag or ribbon tied loosely around the pinecone, like a prize being delivered somewhere. One tip for today: keep the boar’s back legs stiff and straight, since that brace against the slope is what sells the effort of the push.

Pine Marten Collecting Pinecone Scales

Draw a single large pinecone first, scales slightly separated as if partly picked apart, since the marten’s whole pose depends on reaching into that structure rather than standing beside a generic cone shape.

The pine marten’s slender body curves around the base of the cone, one paw holding a loose scale up to the light while the tail curls behind for balance. Keep the body long and low rather than round, true to the animal’s actual shape.

Color the held scale coral so it reads as the small prize of the scene. One tip for today: taper the marten’s tail to a soft point rather than a blunt end, since that shape reads instantly as a marten rather than a generic weasel.

Salamander Carrying a Glowworm Lantern

Place the glowworm’s light as the only bright point in an otherwise dark scene, which means the salamander’s body nearest the glow should stay lighter in outline while the far side fades into plain line work with no added shading.

Draw the glowworm first, curled small and bright, held gently in the salamander’s front limb like a lantern. The salamander’s long body winds across the lower page in a gentle curve, legs splayed slightly outward.

Color the glowworm coral at its glowing tip and leave the rest of the scene mostly plain outline. One tip for today: keep the salamander’s eyes as simple small dots rather than large circles, since smaller eyes suit a quiet nocturnal creature better.

Mole Reading Underground by Root Light

Draw the underground tunnel first as a rounded arch shape taking up most of the page, since the mole and its reading nook both need to fit comfortably inside that curved boundary.

Thread a few tree roots down through the tunnel ceiling, one ending in a small glowing bulb or berry that lights the scene. The mole sits below it on a tiny stool, a book held close to its face since moles rely more on other senses than sight.

Color the glowing root tip coral and shade a patch of soil mint around the tunnel walls. One tip for today: keep the mole’s front paws oversized and shovel shaped, since that exaggeration instantly reads as a mole rather than a generic rodent.

Fieldmouse Harvesting Dew Drops

Scatter a few small round dew drops across a patch of grass first, varying their size slightly, since the fieldmouse’s reaching pose depends on which drop sits nearest and largest.

Draw the mouse standing on tiptoe with both paws raised toward the nearest drop, a tiny leaf cup held ready to catch it. Keep the grass blades tall and thin around the mouse so the scale feels appropriately small.

Mint suits the grass blades and coral works well as a flower bud nearby catching a drop of its own. One tip for today: leave a small white gap of unfilled paper inside each dew drop, since that single highlight is what makes a plain circle read as water rather than a pebble.

Newt Sailing a Petal Across a Puddle

Keep the puddle’s outline simple and roughly oval, drawn first so the floating petal boat has a clear boundary to sit within rather than floating in undefined white space.

Draw the petal boat next, a single curved flower petal large enough to hold the newt comfortably, drifting slightly off center in the puddle. The newt stands balanced near the petal’s stem end, tail trailing into the water behind.

Color the petal coral and the puddle’s edge mint for a simple two tone balance. One tip for today: add two or three small ripple rings spreading from where the petal meets the water, since still water without any ripple reads as solid ground instead.

Wren Conducting a Birdsong Choir

Arrange three or four small birds in a loose row along a branch first, facing the same direction, since the wren conducting them needs an audience already in place before its own pose makes sense.

Draw the wren last, standing slightly apart and facing the row, one wing raised like a conductor’s baton. A few small musical note shapes floating above the row finish the joke without needing any other detail.

Color two or three notes coral so they stand out clearly against the plain birds. If this small cast of characters appeals, a similar group dynamic runs through dog doodle ideas, where a few simple figures together carry most of the charm.

What to Do Next

Pick one idea from the list, the one that made a quick laugh happen, and start there on a blank sketchbook page. Block in the main shape with fineliner first, add the one small prop that makes the scene make sense, then finish with a touch of coral or mint before moving to the next page.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of fineliner works best for sketchbook doodles like these?

A fine or extra fine tip, around 0.3 to 0.5, gives clean outlines without bleeding into small details like whiskers or leaf stems. Keep one slightly thicker pen on hand for outlining the main subject so it stands out from any background elements.

Should the coral and mint marker go on before or after the fineliner?

Always after, once the ink has fully dried, usually a minute or two. Marker applied first makes the fineliner skip or smear, and marker over wet ink can pull the black pigment into the color, muddying both.

How do I stop these doodles from looking stiff or overworked?

Keep outlines loose and let small wobbles stay in the line rather than erasing and redrawing. Most of these scenes rely on one clear pose and a single small prop, so resist adding extra detail once the main shapes and one accent color are in place.

What if I only have ten minutes, which ideas work fastest?

Pick subjects with one main shape and one small prop, like the dormouse in the teacup or the frog with its leaf banjo. Skip background elements like grass or ripples on a tight schedule and add them back in on a slower day.

How do I keep all these forest animals looking consistent across a sketchbook spread?

Use the same fineliner weight throughout and limit color to the same two markers, coral and mint, on every page. Keeping proportions similarly simple and rounded across subjects, rather than realistic on some and cartoonish on others, ties a whole spread together.
