These christmas card ideas are built for an afternoon at the kitchen table, one small gouache scene at a time, no lettering and no fuss. Each card front is a tiny world of its own: a blush pink tree, a rose wreath, a gold-dusted stag, all painted in flat matte shapes that look like they came off an old postcard press.
Below you will find thirty three of them, ordered from the simplest shapes to the fuller little scenes, so you can start wherever your confidence sits today. Pick the card that pulls at you most, mix your pinks and sage greens, and send something nobody else will have in their stack this year.
Using these images: free for personal projects such as printing, coloring, cards, journals and gifts. Handmade items that include them may be sold up to 30 pieces per design. More than that is commercial use and is not permitted, and neither is selling or sharing the images themselves or passing them off as your own. Please ask before any other use.
Start the whole set with a shape everyone can trust: a cone-shaped blush pink tree sitting in a rounded velvet pot by a frosty window. Block the tree first with a flat triangle of dusty rose gouache, let it dry fully, then paint the pot underneath in a slightly deeper pink so the two shapes read as separate objects, not one blob.
Measure before you commit: hold your brush up against the card and check that the tree takes up roughly two thirds of the height, with the pot and a sliver of windowsill filling the rest. This proportion trick keeps the tree from looking squashed or the pot from swallowing the scene.
Add the frost last, a thin rim of white gouache along the window edge and a few dabbed snow dots on the tree, using a small round brush loaded lightly so the dots stay crisp. If your gouache goes patchy on the first coat, let it dry and lay a second flat coat rather than scrubbing at the wet paint.
No velvet pot reference on hand: any rounded plant pot works, just keep the rim slightly darker than the body to suggest the fabric fold.
Palette: Dusty Rose,Deep Blush,Sage Green,Titanium White
Move from a tree to a ring, and the wreath on a pale green front door is the next easy shape to master. Pencil a light guide circle first, then build the greenery as a loose ring of small rounded eucalyptus leaves in sage green before adding the roses on top, so the leaves anchor the shape and the flowers sit where you want the eye to land.
Eye level matters here: paint the door straight on, no angle, so the wreath reads as a flat circle rather than an oval, and keep the hanging ribbon loop centered above it to hold the composition together.
Paint each rose as three or four curved petal strokes layered in dusty rose and a lighter blush, working from the center outward, and leave tiny slivers of cream card showing between petals so they stay crisp rather than muddy. If your roses blur together, let the first flower dry completely before touching the one beside it.
No pale green card stock: paint the door panel in flat sage first and let that dry before adding the wreath on top.
If you enjoy wreaths and want a wider set of wintery greenery ideas, the christmas tree painting ideas page has more shapes built the same flat, matte way.
Palette: Sage Green,Dusty Rose,Pale Blush,Soft Gold
Bring the scene indoors with a pink teapot tipped mid pour above a bowl of pink glass ornaments, a nice test of drawing one object in motion. Block the teapot body as a rounded shape first, add the spout and handle as separate flat pink shapes, then paint the stream of cocoa as one continuous curved line in warm brown so it reads as liquid, not a splatter.
The usual place this goes wrong is the pour itself landing too thick or breaking in the middle. Paint it in one confident stroke with a small round brush loaded fully, and if it breaks, let it dry and go back with a thin second line to rejoin it rather than thickening the whole stream.
Finish with the bowl of glass ornaments underneath, a cluster of small circles in two tones of pink with a single white highlight dot on each so they catch the light. Keep the ornaments overlapping slightly rather than lined up in a row for a more natural cluster.
No pink teapot in mind: a plain white teapot works too, just paint a thin pink line around the rim and lid to tie it to the palette.
Palette: Dusty Rose,Warm Cocoa Brown,Pale Blush,Titanium White
After a still life, try something with a little motion: a rounded vintage pink car carrying a tiny fir tree home through falling snow. Block the car body first as one smooth curved shape, keep the wheel wells and windows as simple flat cutouts, and only then add the fir tree strapped on top as a small dark green triangle against the pink roof.
Give the scene a light source before you add shadow: decide the light comes from the upper left, then add a thin strip of deeper rose along the lower right edge of the car body to suggest roundness without shading the whole thing.
If the car shape ends up lopsided, a dab of white gouache along one edge can straighten the silhouette by covering the wobble, a trick that saves more vintage car paintings than people admit. Snow comes last, small white dots scattered loosely rather than evenly across the card.
No vintage car references: round off every corner on a basic car shape and it will read as retro on its own.
Palette: Dusty Rose,Deep Blush,Forest Green,Titanium White
Step up the detail with a stag standing in a snowy wood, wearing a garland of blush peonies between his antlers. Draw the stag’s body first in one flowing outline, block the body in a soft grey-brown, then add the antlers as thin branching lines in gold before painting the peonies as small rounded clusters resting along the base of the antlers rather than tangled through them.
Keep the peonies as a simple garland draped across, never wound through the tines, or the shapes will cross and blur into each other. Three or four rounded flower clusters read clearly; more than that gets busy fast at this scale.
For texture on the antlers and the gold dusting across the stag’s back, try a dry brush loaded with very little gold gouache, dragged lightly over the dried brown coat so flecks of gold catch without covering the shape underneath. A kneaded eraser can lift stray pencil guidelines once the paint is dry.
No gold gouache on hand: mix a little yellow into white gouache and dab it on sparingly for a similar glow.
You Will Need
- gold gouache or a dry brush for the dusting
Palette: Warm Grey Brown,Soft Gold,Pale Blush,Sage Green
Scale back down to something quick after the stag: a single rose gold bauble hanging from a pine branch above a cluster of pink hellebores. Paint the pine branch first as a few simple flat green needle clusters along one diagonal line, then add the bauble as one clean circle in soft gold with a thin ribbon loop at the top.
Ten minutes gets you the branch, the bauble and a loose scatter of hellebore petals underneath in flat shapes with no shading at all, which already reads as a finished little card. Forty minutes lets you add a white highlight dot on the bauble, a center of gold dots on each hellebore, and a second smaller pine sprig for depth.
The ribbon loop is the fussiest part: paint it as two short curved strokes meeting at a point rather than trying to draw a bow, which keeps it crisp at this small size.
No pine branch in reach: a single straight twig with a few short diagonal lines reads just as well as needles.
Palette: Soft Gold,Forest Green,Pale Blush,Cream White
Build on the wreath idea with a fuller scene: a pink cottage door framed by a garland of roses and pine cones running up both sides. Paint the door itself first as one flat rectangle with a rounded top, add the door frame trim in a slightly lighter pink, and only then start the garland so it reads as something laid over an already-finished door.
Work the garland from the bottom up on each side, alternating a rose, a pine cone shape, then a small sage leaf cluster, so the rhythm repeats evenly rather than bunching all the roses at the top. Pine cones paint easily as a simple oval with a few short diagonal lines across it, no need for scale-by-scale detail.
If the two sides of the garland end up uneven, it rarely shows once the door knob and a small welcome mat shape are added at the base, since the eye settles on the center. A flat gold door knob is a nice small accent to finish.
No pink paint mixed yet: start with white gouache and add rose a touch at a time until you reach a shade you like, testing it on scrap card first.
Palette: Dusty Rose,Pale Blush,Sage Green,Soft Gold
Give the brush a break from garlands and paint a tall glass vase of pink amaryllis set on a table laid for Christmas tea. Start with the vase as a simple tapered cylinder in pale grey-white, add a thin waterline near the base, then build the amaryllis stems straight up from the rim before the trumpet-shaped blooms open at the top.
Each amaryllis bloom is six broad petals fanning out from a center point, so sketch the center dot lightly in pencil on each flower and let the petals radiate out evenly from it, which keeps the whole bloom from leaning lopsided. Paint two or three blooms at different heights rather than lined up exactly even.
The table setting underneath can stay as simple as a flat cream tablecloth shape and a single teacup silhouette in the corner, enough to suggest the tea without painting a full spread. If the vase looks flat, a thin vertical highlight stripe of white down one side gives it instant glass shine.
No real amaryllis reference: a trumpet lily shape works as a stand-in, the petal structure reads almost the same.
Palette: Deep Blush,Pale Blush,Sage Green,Cream White
Turn to something edible for this one: a blush pink yule log dusted with sugar, sitting on a footed cake stand. Paint the log shape first as a long rounded cylinder in warm pink-brown, then use the end of your brush handle or a fine liner brush to drag a few curved swirl lines along the top to suggest the rolled icing texture.
The cake stand underneath needs to hold the log visually, so paint its pedestal base wider at the bottom and narrower where it meets the plate, a simple hourglass shape that reads as sturdy rather than wobbly. A thin gold rim line around the plate edge lifts the whole thing.
Sugar dusting is the fun finishing trick: once everything else is dry, flick a loaded toothbrush lightly over the log for a scatter of tiny white specks, holding scrap paper over any part you want to protect from stray flecks.
No toothbrush handy: dab the white specks on individually with the tip of a fine round brush instead, a little slower but just as effective.
You Will Need
- a toothbrush for the sugar-dust splatter
Palette: Warm Pink Brown,Pale Blush,Soft Gold,Titanium White
Try a window as a frame within the card: a round window looking out on a tiny pink-lit village under falling snow. Paint the circular window frame first in a flat warm wood tone, then work inside the circle as its own small painting, starting with a pale pink-grey sky wash before adding the rooftops.
Perspective stays simple here since the village sits below eye level looking slightly down, so paint the rooftops as a loose row of triangles and rectangles getting smaller toward the center of the circle, with window lights as small gold squares dotted across the fronts. That size drop toward the middle is what sells the distance.
Snow falls last as small white dots scattered across the whole circle, denser near the frame edge and lighter near the center, which helps the eye settle on the village rather than the snow.
No compass or circle template: trace around a glass, cup or roll of tape for a clean round guide before you start painting.
You Will Need
- a plate or cup to trace the circle
Palette: Pale Pink Grey,Dusty Rose,Warm Wood Brown,Soft Gold
Settle into something cozier: a pink velvet armchair beside a tree hung with dried orange slices. Block the armchair first as a rounded silhouette with simple curved arms, then add a few deeper pink lines along the folds to suggest the velvet without overworking the texture.
The tree beside it builds the same way as any cone shape, but the orange slices are the fun part: paint each as a flat circle in warm orange with a thin white line pattern radiating from the center like segments, hung on the tree as small ornaments rather than scattered loosely.
If the chair ends up looking flat instead of velvety, dry brush a little deeper rose along the inner curves of the arms and back, dragging the brush lightly so the color only catches the raised texture lines you already painted, not the whole surface.
No dried orange slices to reference: a simple circle with a star-shaped center line still reads clearly as a citrus slice at this scale.
Palette: Dusty Rose,Deep Blush,Warm Orange,Forest Green
Pare everything back for this quiet one: a brass sleigh bell and a small sprig of mistletoe hanging on a pink door. Paint the door as one flat panel first, then the bell as a simple rounded shape in warm gold with a thin darker line at the bottom to suggest the opening, and a tiny circle for the clapper peeking through.
Measure the bell against the door panel before committing to size: it should sit small, no more than a fifth of the door’s width, so it reads as a hanging detail rather than the main subject crowding out the pink.
The mistletoe sprig tucked beside the ribbon is just two or three sage leaves and two or three small white berries, kept loose and a little asymmetrical rather than a tight symmetrical bunch, which keeps it from competing with the bell.
No gold paint for the bell: a warm yellow ochre with a touch of brown shadow underneath gives nearly the same brass look.
Palette: Dusty Rose,Soft Gold,Sage Green,Titanium White
Let the flowers spill rather than sit upright this time: pink hellebores and white roses tumbling from a gold watering can lying in the snow. Paint the watering can first on its side, the long spout pointing away from the flowers so the eye reads it as having just tipped over, then build the flower spill flowing out of the opening.
Light matters for a can lying down: decide the light comes from above, then keep the top curve of the can a touch lighter and the underside in shadow, which is what makes a tipped object look like it is resting on the ground rather than floating.
Layer the hellebores in behind the white roses so the pink shows at the edges and the white roses catch the eye first, since white against cream card needs a thin grey-pink outline or it disappears into the background. Snow dots scattered loosely around the base finish the grounding.
No gold paint mixed: a warm mustard yellow with a thin brown line along the seams reads as metal just as well.
Palette: Soft Gold,Pale Blush,Cream White,Sage Green
Move to a tabletop scene lit low: a vintage pink music box standing open on a lace tablecloth beside a lit candle. Paint the music box base first as a simple rectangular box in dusty rose, the open lid angled up behind it, then add a tiny spinning figure or flower shape inside if you want a focal detail, kept small and simple.
The candlelight is the real subject here, so work the light source carefully: paint a soft warm gold glow radiating out from the candle flame in a loose uneven circle, fading into the cream background rather than stopping with a hard edge, which is what makes it look lit rather than pasted on.
Lace on the tablecloth can be suggested with a scatter of small white dots and short dashes along the table edge rather than drawn stitch by stitch, which keeps the card reading as a flat print rather than a tight illustration.
No lace pattern reference: a simple scalloped edge line along the table border reads as trim without any dot detail at all.
Palette: Dusty Rose,Soft Gold,Cream White,Warm Candle Yellow
Step outside again for a small storefront: a tiny pink flower shop with snow settled on its scalloped awning. Block the shop facade first as a flat rectangle, add the window as a slightly inset panel, then paint the scalloped awning above it as a row of small connected半-circles, easiest drawn by tracing around a coin repeatedly along a pencil guideline.
Fill the shop window with a loose cluster of small flower shapes in pink and white, kept simple as blobs of color with a single darker dot center on each, since from the street a flower-filled window reads as texture and color rather than individual stems.
Snow sitting on the awning scallops is a nice detail trick: paint each scallop its base color first, let it dry, then add a thin white cap along just the top curved edge of each one so the snow looks settled rather than painted flat across the whole awning.
If you like building a whole street or storefront set, the retro Christmas diorama scenes page has more small building ideas built the same way.
Palette: Dusty Rose,Pale Blush,Sage Green,Titanium White
Give the composition some air with a white dove in flight, carrying a small sprig of pink berries over a snowy rooftop. Paint the dove’s body first as one smooth teardrop shape, wings swept back in two simple curved points, and keep the whole bird as flat white with only a thin grey-pink outline to separate it from the cream background.
A flying bird needs its weight to read correctly: angle the body slightly head-down and tail-up, as if gliding forward rather than sitting still in the air, and that small tilt is often the only thing separating a convincing dove from a stiff one.
The berry sprig held in its beak is two or three small pink circles on a thin sage stem, kept tiny since it is a detail the dove carries, not a competing shape. The rooftop below can be as simple as one triangular shape dusted with white snow dots.
No reference for a dove in flight: a simplified paper airplane silhouette with rounded wingtips gives a similar gliding shape to build from.
Palette: Titanium White,Pale Blush,Sage Green,Warm Grey
Return to a tabletop still life with weight to it: a gold candlestick and a bowl of pink pomegranates resting on a winter windowsill. Paint the candlestick first, a tall narrow base widening into a cupped holder at the top, then the candle itself as a simple cream cylinder with the flame as one small warm gold teardrop.
Pomegranates paint easily as slightly flattened circles in deep pink-red, each with a small crown shape at the top made from three or four short pointed strokes. Vary their sizes slightly in the bowl so they read as a natural pile rather than identical stamped shapes.
Once this combination works, vary it next time by swapping the pomegranates for pink pears or blush-colored apples using the same rounded base shape, or by changing the candlestick to a shorter, wider one for a different silhouette on the sill.
No gold paint for the candlestick: ochre yellow with a thin white highlight stripe down one side reads as polished metal just as well.
Palette: Soft Gold,Deep Blush,Sage Green,Cream White
Bring in a sense of journey with a pink sled loaded with gifts and white roses, resting beside a garden gate. Paint the sled body first as a simple curved-front rectangle in dusty rose, add the thin runner lines underneath in a darker tone, then stack the gift boxes on top as two or three overlapping rectangles wrapped in alternating pink and cream.
Tuck the white roses in beside the gifts rather than on top of them, two or three blooms leaning against the box edges, which keeps every shape distinct instead of flowers disappearing behind ribbon and wrapping paper.
The garden gate behind can stay as simple as a few vertical sage-green pickets with one horizontal rail, enough to place the sled in a setting without painting a full fence line in detail.
No specific sled shape in mind: a simple curved-front toboggan silhouette works for any snowy card where something needs to be pulled or loaded.
Palette: Dusty Rose,Deep Blush,Cream White,Sage Green
Frame a landscape inside a decorative shape for this one: a pink Christmas tree standing alone on a snowy hill, the whole scene set inside a scalloped circle border. Trace a circle guide first, add a scalloped edge by marking evenly spaced bumps around the circumference with a pencil before painting over them in gold, then paint the landscape inside as its own small scene.
Keep the horizon line low inside the circle, maybe a third of the way up, so there is plenty of pale pink-grey sky above the hill and the single tree has room to stand tall against it. A low horizon is what gives a tiny landscape a sense of open space rather than a cramped corner.
The hill itself is one soft curved shape in pale blush-white with the tree planted just off-center, since dead center often looks static. A few scattered snow dots across the hill finish the quiet mood.
No compass for the scallops: trace a small coin repeatedly around your circle guide and connect the tops to even them out before painting.
You Will Need
- a plate to trace the circle and a coin for the scallops
Palette: Dusty Rose,Pale Pink Grey,Soft Gold,Cream White
Try a figure with real personality next: a blush pink carousel horse dusted with snow and a touch of gold shimmer, caught mid-leap. Sketch the horse’s body in pencil first as one continuous curved line from nose to tail before adding any color, since carousel horses rely on that arched, leaping pose to read correctly rather than looking like a standing animal.
Once the outline feels right, block in the body as flat dusty pink, the mane and tail as flowing sage-green or gold ribbon shapes rather than realistic hair, which keeps the ornamental carousel feel instead of a real horse.
The saddle and pole details are where carousel horses usually go wrong, overloaded with pattern until the shape disappears. Keep the saddle to one simple gold-trimmed shape and the pole as a single thin vertical line, letting the body and pose carry the card.
No carousel horse reference nearby: a rocking horse silhouette with the legs stretched into a running position gives a similar leaping energy.
Palette: Dusty Rose,Soft Gold,Sage Green,Titanium White
Look at actual carousel horse photographs for the leg position before you paint. That one leaping pose, front legs forward and back legs trailing, is what sells the whole idea.
Settle into a simple mantel still life: a crystal bowl of sugared cranberries and pink roses resting among greenery. Paint the bowl first with a few thin vertical lines suggesting cut glass facets rather than a fully rendered pattern, since at this scale a handful of lines reads as crystal more convincingly than an attempt at full detail.
Cranberries paint quickly as small round dots in deep red, clustered together inside the bowl rim, and the sugared texture comes from a scatter of tiny white dots added once the red has dried, flicked on lightly with a stiff brush or an old toothbrush.
In ten minutes you can block the bowl, the cranberries and a rough mantel shelf line beneath. The forty minute version adds the pink roses tucked beside the bowl, a sprig of greenery trailing over the shelf edge, and the sugar-dust texture on every cranberry rather than just a few.
No toothbrush for the sugar texture: a dry stiff brush tapped gently against your finger over the bowl gives a similar light scatter.
You Will Need
- a toothbrush or stiff brush for the sugared texture
Palette: Deep Red,Dusty Rose,Sage Green,Titanium White
Have some fun with a sweeter subject: a pink gingerbread house topped with rose petal shingles, standing on a cake board. Paint the house walls first as simple flat geometric shapes, a square body and a triangular roof, in warm gingerbread-pink before any decoration goes on top.
The rose petal shingles are the standout detail: paint overlapping rows of small curved petal shapes across the roof, working from the bottom row up so each new row of petals overlaps the one below it, the same way real shingles layer.
Windows and a door can stay as flat gold-outlined rectangles with no shading inside, keeping the house reading as a toy rather than a realistic building. A dusting of white snow dots along the roof ridge and around the base finishes it.
No pink icing-pink reference: warm terracotta with a touch of white mixed in gives a close gingerbread-pink without needing a special mix.
Palette: Warm Gingerbread Pink,Deep Blush,Soft Gold,Titanium White
Paint a fuller bouquet for this one: pink ranunculus and pine sprigs bursting upward from a small gold pot. Ranunculus blooms are built from the center out, a tight pencil spiral first, then short curved petal strokes layered around it in rings, each ring slightly looser than the last until the flower opens fully at the outer edge.
Compare the bouquet’s spread to the pot before you commit to stem length: the flowers and pine together should reach roughly twice the pot’s height, which keeps the arrangement looking full rather than sparse or top-heavy.
Vary the ranunculus sizes and tilt a few stems slightly sideways rather than painting every bloom facing straight up, which gives the bouquet a gathered, just-picked feeling instead of a stiff row. Pine sprigs tucked between the blooms fill any gaps with quick dark green needle clusters.
No gold pot to paint from: a plain terracotta pot with a thin gold rim line gets the same festive lift.
Palette: Dusty Rose,Pale Blush,Forest Green,Soft Gold
Shift the palette for contrast: gifts wrapped in blush paper with pine sprigs tucked under their ribbons, sitting beneath a white Christmas tree. Paint the white tree first as a simple triangle in the palest cream-white, defined mostly by a thin grey-pink outline since white on white needs that edge to read clearly against the card.
Underneath, stack two or three gift boxes at slightly different angles rather than square to the frame, which reads as more naturally placed than a perfectly aligned row. Wrap each in flat blush paper with a single thin gold ribbon line crossing the top, kept simple rather than a full bow.
Tuck one small pine sprig under each ribbon, just two or three needle clusters, enough to suggest the detail without drawing a full sprig per gift. If the white tree disappears into the cream background, deepen the outline slightly rather than adding color to the tree itself.
No white gouache opaque enough: mix in the smallest touch of pale grey so the tree still reads as a shape rather than vanishing entirely.
Palette: Cream White,Pale Blush,Soft Gold,Sage Green
Paint something simple and warm after that busier scene: a single pink velvet stocking hanging on a white mantel beside a row of lit candles. Block the stocking shape first, the classic curved boot silhouette, in dusty rose, then add a cream cuff band at the top with a thin scalloped edge.
The candles beside it are the chance to practice a soft glow again: paint each flame as a small warm gold teardrop with a faint lighter halo blended gently into the cream background rather than a hard-edged circle, which is what makes candlelight look warm instead of flat.
If this is your first time painting a hanging stocking, keep the toe pointing slightly to one side rather than straight down, which gives it a sense of weight as if it is actually hanging rather than drawn flat against the mantel.
No white mantel surface to reference: a plain horizontal shelf line with a thin shadow underneath reads clearly enough as a mantel.
Palette: Dusty Rose,Cream White,Soft Gold,Warm Candle Yellow
Paint a character with a straight, formal posture for this one: a blush pink nutcracker standing guard beside a vase of white tulips. Build the nutcracker from simple stacked shapes, a tall rectangular body, a cylindrical hat, and a narrow head, keeping every line straight and the pose stiffly upright since that formality is exactly what makes a nutcracker read correctly.
Paint the gold buttons and trim down the front as a single straight row of small dots and thin lines, resisting the urge to add pattern anywhere else on the uniform, since one decorated line against plain pink keeps the figure looking crisp rather than fussy.
White tulips beside him are a nice quiet contrast: each tulip is one simple closed cup shape on a straight stem, two or three grouped loosely in a plain vase, their white kept clean with only a thin grey-pink outline to separate them from the background.
No gold paint for the trim: a warm yellow ochre dotted along the front reads just as crisp as true gold.
Palette: Dusty Rose,Soft Gold,Cream White,Sage Green
Try painting something inside a glass dome next: a snow globe holding a tiny pink chapel, sitting on a dressing table. Paint the glass globe shape first as a large circle, then work the chapel scene inside it exactly like the round window idea earlier, a small flat pink building with a steeple, before adding the globe’s curved highlight last.
The glass highlight is what sells the whole globe: once the chapel and interior are fully dry, paint one soft curved white streak along the upper left of the circle, following the curve of the glass rather than cutting straight across it, which instantly reads as reflected light on rounded glass.
A simple gold or wood-toned base underneath, painted as a plain rounded block, grounds the globe on the dressing table. Snowflakes suspended inside the glass are a scatter of small white dots, slightly denser near the chapel than near the edges.
No circle template for the globe: trace a mug, jar lid or roll of tape, whatever rounded object is nearby gives a clean enough guide.
You Will Need
- a mug or jar lid to trace the globe
Palette: Dusty Rose,Pale Pink Grey,Soft Gold,Titanium White
Bring back the rounded vintage vehicle shape, this time parked rather than driving: a pink vintage truck standing outside a snowy flower shop. Paint the truck body first using the same smooth rounded forms as the earlier car, a boxy cab and a flatbed behind it, then load the flatbed with a few simple flower bundles in pink and white, wrapped in brown paper shapes.
Place the flower shop behind the truck rather than beside it, slightly smaller in scale to suggest it sits a little further back, which gives the whole card a sense of depth without any real perspective drawing involved.
If the truck and building start competing for attention, dial back the shop to a simple flat facade with one window and a door, letting all the smaller flower and detail work happen on the truck instead, where the eye should land first.
No flatbed truck reference: any boxy delivery van shape works just as well loaded with the same wrapped flower bundles.
For more vintage delivery vehicle and shopfront pairings in a similar retro mood, the retro Christmas diorama scenes collection is worth a look.
Palette: Dusty Rose,Deep Blush,Sage Green,Cream White
Paint a figure caught mid-turn for this one: a ballerina music box turning beside a sprig of holly on a pink dresser. Build the ballerina from simple shapes, an oval torso, thin straight limbs, and a flared triangular tutu skirt, keeping the pose balanced on one leg with the other extended slightly behind for that mid-spin feeling.
The music box base underneath is a plain cylindrical shape in dusty rose with a thin gold band around the rim, and the mirror she stands on can be suggested with a simple oval outline rather than painted reflective detail.
A sprig of holly beside the box is two or three pointed sage leaves and a small cluster of red berries, kept apart from the figure rather than touching her so both shapes stay readable. If the ballerina’s proportions feel off, compare her leg length to her torso before adding the skirt, since the skirt tends to hide a lot of smaller mistakes underneath it.
No ballerina reference handy: a simple figure skater pose in a short flared skirt reads almost identically at this small scale.
Palette: Dusty Rose,Pale Blush,Soft Gold,Deep Red
Return to a wreath with a simpler focus than the earlier one: a single pink rose tucked into a frosty pine wreath hanging on a garden gate. Paint the pine ring first as a full continuous circle of small flat green needle clusters, keeping the ring even all the way around before adding anything else.
Place just one rose along the lower right of the ring rather than scattering several blooms, which makes this version quicker and quieter than the fuller rose wreath from earlier in this list, and gives the single flower real presence instead of competing with a crowd of petals.
Frost comes last and lightly: a thin white dry-brushed edge along only the outer curve of the pine ring, plus a few scattered white dots across the greenery, enough to suggest a cold morning without covering the green entirely.
No garden gate to paint behind it: a plain weathered wood plank background works just as well and keeps the focus on the wreath itself.
Palette: Sage Green,Dusty Rose,Titanium White,Warm Wood Brown
Return to candlelight once more, this time framed by curtains: rose gold candles lit in a snowy window with pink curtains drawn partway open. Paint the window frame and sill first, then the curtains as two simple flat fabric shapes pulled to either side, their folds suggested with just two or three curved lines rather than a full pleated pattern.
Group three candles of slightly different heights on the sill, each a simple rose gold cylinder with a warm gold flame, varying the heights so the row reads as deliberately arranged rather than lined up like soldiers. Keep the tallest one slightly off-center for a more natural grouping.
Snow builds up along the outside of the window glass as a simple white curved line along the bottom pane, with a few flakes falling beyond the glass outside the curtains to separate the cozy interior from the cold outside.
No rose gold paint mixed: a warm pink-tinted gold, made by adding the smallest touch of rose into plain gold, gets you there without a special tube.
Palette: Soft Gold,Pale Blush,Warm Candle Yellow,Titanium White
Close in on water for a change of scene: a white swan gliding past a small pink boathouse strung with fairy lights. Paint the swan first as one smooth S-curve from head to tail, the body a simple rounded oval, keeping the whole bird flat white with just a thin grey-pink outline the same way the earlier dove was built.
The swan’s reflection underneath is what sells the water: paint a soft, slightly wavy mirror of the body directly below it in a paler, more muted version of the same white, blurred gently at the edges rather than sharply outlined, since reflections always read softer than the object itself.
The pink boathouse behind sits along the water’s edge as a simple flat rectangular building with a peaked roof, and the fairy lights strung along its eaves are just a row of tiny gold dots, evenly spaced along one curved string line.
No water reference to work from: a few thin horizontal grey-blue lines beneath the swan suggest gentle ripples without needing to paint a full lake surface.
Palette: Titanium White,Dusty Rose,Soft Gold,Pale Blue Grey
Finish the set the way a good greeting should land: a basket of pink roses and pine boughs set on a snowy doorstep. Paint the basket first as a simple woven oval shape, a few curved horizontal lines across its surface enough to suggest wicker without weaving every strand.
Build the roses and pine boughs the same way as earlier flower ideas in this list, layered petal strokes for the roses and short needle clusters for the pine, but let a few stems spill slightly over the basket’s rim onto the step, which keeps the whole arrangement looking freshly set down rather than stiffly contained.
If this is your first time finishing a whole card set, treat this doorstep basket as a good closing piece since it reuses every skill from the simpler ideas above, roses, pine, and a rounded container, all in one familiar composition. A dusting of snow across the step and basket rim ties it to the rest of the set.
No wicker basket reference: a plain rounded bowl shape with a thin darker rim line still reads as a container holding the flowers.
Once you have a few of these finished, the watercolor christmas card ideas page is worth a look if you want to try the same romantic scenes in a looser, wetter medium too, or browse pink junk journal pages for more ways to use this palette beyond cards.

What to Do Next
Pick one card that is already calling to you, mix your blush and sage on a scrap of the same cardstock first, and work through it shape by shape the way its text walks you through. Once the first one dries, the next scene on this list will go faster, and before long you will have a stack worth sending.
Frequently Asked Questions
What gouache colors do I need for a blush pink Christmas card set?
A warm dusty rose, a pale blush, a sage green and a soft gold cover almost every card here. Mix deeper or lighter versions of the same pink from those two base tones rather than buying extra tubes.
How do I keep gouache edges crisp instead of fuzzy?
Let each shape dry completely before painting the one next to it, and use a smaller round brush for outlines than you think you need. Fuzzy edges almost always come from painting into still-wet color.
Can I paint these Christmas card ideas without mixing custom pink shades?
Yes, a basic set with one rose or pink, one white and a little brown gets you close to every shade used here. Add white to lighten and a touch of brown or red to deepen as needed.
What size card works best for these gouache Christmas scenes?
A standard folded card around five by seven inches gives enough room for the subject to fill the front without crowding. Smaller cards work too if you simplify a busier scene down to its main one or two shapes.
How do I stop gouache from cracking once it dries on the card?
Keep each layer thin rather than loading the brush heavily, and avoid painting a wet layer directly over a thick dry one. A few thin coats dry flatter and more durable than one thick one.
