28 Snow Painting Ideas of Fresh Snowfall, Footprints and Rooftops Under a White Blanket

Snow painting gives you a whole winter’s worth of scenes without ever leaving the warmth of your studio table, and that is exactly why it is so satisfying to work through on a quiet afternoon. Every idea below treats the snow itself as the main character, not just a dusting on top of something else, so you get to play with flat white shapes, cool shadows and the odd flash of cherry red against all that pale ground.

Each scene below fits a small canvas and a single sitting, moving from the simplest shapes near the top to the busier compositions further down. Pick whichever one catches your eye first, there is no need to work through them in order.

Start with the easiest scene on this list: a quiet street of row houses seen through big, falling flakes. Block in a pale lilac-grey sky first, then paint the row houses as simple flat rectangles in two or three muted colours, keeping rooflines straight with a ruler or a strip of tape if your hand is not steady yet.

Add snow as flat white caps on each roof and a wide white strip along the street before any flakes go on top, so the ground reads as snow-covered from the very first layer. Finish with a scatter of white dots in a few different sizes using the end of a brush handle, working from background flakes (smaller, more muted) to foreground flakes (larger, pure white).

The common mistake here is painting the flakes too evenly, which flattens the sense of depth. Vary the spacing and size instead, and leave some patches of sky completely bare.

If you do not have a fine liner brush for the smallest flakes, the tip of a cotton swab works just as well for soft round dots.

You Will Need

• ruler or painter’s tape for straight rooflines

Footprints turn a plain white garden into a scene with a story, and this is a gentle one to try next. Paint the whole canvas as snow first: a flat white-to-lilac gradient from foreground to background, with a simple dark back door and a strip of wall at the top edge to anchor the space.

Measure where the door sits roughly a third of the way in from one side before you add anything else, this keeps the eye led correctly once the footprints go in. Paint the path of footprints as small ovals in pairs, getting smaller and closer together as they near the door to suggest distance.

Shadows inside each footprint sell the effect more than the footprint shape itself, so drop a touch of icy blue or lilac into each hollow while the white is still workable, or once dry with a small round brush. Skipping this step is the main reason footprints end up looking like flat stamps instead of pressed snow.

If you are new to this kind of perspective trick, draw two faint pencil guide dots first: one near the door, one in the foreground, then space the footprints between them.

Snow piled on warm terracotta roofs gives you the best colour contrast on this whole list, so it is worth tackling once you are comfortable with flat shapes. Block in the hill of rooftops first as a cluster of overlapping triangles and rectangles in terracotta, rust and a muted brick tone, working from the back of the hill toward the front so nearer roofs overlap and cover the ones behind.

Think about where the light is coming from before you add snow: if it falls from the upper left, every roof gets a thick white cap on its left-facing slope and a thin sliver of snow or none at all on the right-facing slope, with lilac shadow tucked under each snow cap.

The scene can go muddy fast if every roof gets the same treatment, so vary the snow cap thickness and let one or two roofs peek through nearly bare. Keep a pale warm sky behind the whole hill to stop the terracotta from fighting with the white.

One concrete tip: paint all the terracotta roofs first and let them dry completely before adding a single speck of white snow on top, or the colours will smear together.

Palette: Terracotta,Burnt Sienna,Titanium White,Soft Lilac

Reference a few hill-town photos if the roof angles feel confusing. Looking at how real terracotta tiles catch light makes the snow caps easier to place believably.

A single red mailbox wearing a tall cap of snow makes a lovely small-canvas subject if today calls for something quick. Paint the mailbox shape first in cherry red, a simple rounded rectangle on a thin post, and let it dry fully before touching it again.

Build the snow cap as one solid white dome sitting on top of the box rather than a thin line, this is what makes it read as a proper pile rather than frost. Push a little lilac shadow into the underside curve of the dome where it meets the red, and let a few short drips of white run down the front edge for melt.

This is a fast one: in ten minutes you can have the mailbox, cap and a flat snowy ground behind it finished. Given forty minutes, add a soft blurred hedge or fence line behind the mailbox and a light flake fall in the sky to give it more atmosphere.

If cherry red paint runs thin and patchy over white primer, add a base layer of warm orange-red first, then glaze the cherry red on top once dry.

Palette: Cherry Red,Titanium White,Soft Lilac,Charcoal Grey

Move from the mailbox to a larger surface with a garden bench buried under a thick cushion of snow. Paint the bench frame first in a dark weathered wood tone, just enough visible at the legs and armrests to read clearly as a bench, since most of the seat and backrest will disappear under white.

Build the snow cushion as one continuous soft shape draped over the seat and spilling slightly over the front edge, rounding every corner rather than keeping the bench’s straight lines. This is the detail that convinces the eye: real snow softens hard edges into gentle curves.

Dry brushing works well here for the texture along the top ridge of the snow, where a barely loaded flat brush dragged lightly across the surface catches just the raised bumps and leaves the hollows white and smooth. If the cushion looks too uniform and cake-like, break up the top surface with a few shallow dips and uneven mounds before you dry brush over it.

No dry brush technique on hand yet: a nearly dry sponge dabbed lightly across the surface gives a similar broken texture.

You Will Need

• dry, stiff flat brush or sponge for texture

A backyard crossed by a dog’s zigzag paw trail brings a bit of movement into the still white ground. Lay down the whole backyard as flat snow first, white fading gently to lilac in the distance, with a fence or hedge line across the back to give the space an edge.

Plan the zigzag path before painting a single mark: sketch a loose wandering line in pencil from one corner toward the middle, with sharp turns rather than a smooth curve, since real paw trails double back and change direction suddenly. Paint small paired paw prints along that line, each pair slightly offset, getting smaller toward the background.

It is easy to make the trail look too neat and ruler-straight, which kills the playful feeling. Add one extra loop or a spot where the trail circles back on itself near a tree or post, as if the dog paused to sniff something.

Today’s tip: paint the trail last, after the background is fully dry, so each paw print sits crisply on top rather than blending into wet snow beneath it.

After the open yard scenes, bring the eye in close with a cherry red front door half hidden behind a snowdrift. Paint the door and surrounding wall first as flat blocks, the door in cherry red with a simple rectangular panel detail, the wall in a muted warm neutral.

Build the drift as one large soft mound rising up the lower half of the door, curving and tapering unevenly rather than sitting at one flat height, since wind-blown snow never piles evenly. Let the drift cover part of the door’s bottom panel and spill a little onto the step in front.

Eye level matters here: keep your viewpoint low, roughly at the height of the drift itself, which makes the pile of snow feel more imposing and the door more buried. A high eye level flattens the drama completely.

Finish with a thin highlight of pure white along the top ridge of the drift where the light catches it, and leave the lower slope in shadow lilac. If cherry red feels too bright next to the snow, mute it slightly with a touch of burnt umber before it goes on the door.

Palette: Cherry Red,Titanium White,Soft Lilac,Warm Neutral

Give the snow some motion with a heap of it mid-slide off a slanted cottage roof. Paint the roof first as one strong diagonal plane in a dark slate or warm brown, angled clearly enough that the slide makes visual sense, then add the cottage wall and a window below it.

Build the snow in two separate shapes rather than one: a thinner layer still clinging to the upper roof, and a heavier rounded overhang curling off the lower edge where it is about to fall. The gap and the curl between these two shapes is what reads as motion.

Light placement does the rest of the work here. If the light source sits to one side, the underside of the overhanging snow stays in cool lilac shadow while its outer curled edge catches a crisp white highlight, and that contrast alone makes the snow look heavy and about to drop.

If the roof angle feels tricky to judge by eye, lay a strip of painter’s tape across the canvas at the angle you want, paint right up to it, then peel it away once dry for a clean diagonal edge.

You Will Need

• painter’s tape for the roof angle

Palette: Slate Grey,Titanium White,Soft Lilac,Burnt Sienna

A bicycle buried under a dome of snow beside a lamppost is a favourite small-scene subject, and this is a good one once you have a few flat-shape scenes behind you. Sketch the bicycle’s basic frame lightly in pencil first, two wheels and a simple triangular frame, before any paint goes down, since getting the proportions right matters more here than anywhere else on this list.

Compare the wheel size to the frame height as you sketch: the two wheels should sit roughly the same width apart as the frame is tall, which keeps the bicycle from looking stretched or squashed once it disappears under snow. Paint the visible metal parts in dark grey or black first, then build the snow dome over the seat, handlebars and basket as one soft continuous mound.

Let the wheels stay mostly visible so the bicycle still reads clearly as a bicycle under all that white. Add the lamppost beside it as a simple vertical line with a small lit top, painted last so it sits crisply in front of the snowy background.

One tip for today: keep the dome’s highlight on the same side as the lamppost’s glow, it quietly ties the two shapes together as lit by the same light.

Palette: Charcoal Grey,Titanium White,Soft Lilac,Pale Yellow

Bring a figure into the scene with a girl catching snowflakes on her tongue in a park. Block her in as simple flat shapes: a coat, a scarf, a tilted head with chin up and mouth slightly open, kept loose and graphic rather than detailed, which suits this flat painting style far better than a realistic face.

Work from the inside out: paint the coat and scarf blocks first, then her head and the simple features, then the park background of snow-covered ground and a few bare trees, saving the falling snowflakes for the very last layer so they sit on top of everything.

Her tilted-back pose is the part most likely to go wrong, so check it by comparing the angle of her chin to the angle of her shoulders before committing to paint: the chin should tip back noticeably further than the shoulders lean, or she will look like she is simply looking up rather than catching flakes.

If figures feel difficult, keep her small and simplified, a coat-shaped silhouette with minimal facial detail reads perfectly well from a normal viewing distance and keeps the snow as the true focus of the piece.

Palette: Cherry Red,Titanium White,Soft Lilac,Charcoal Grey

A garden of round topiary balls under white caps is a calm, almost pattern-like scene to paint next. Start by placing three or four topiary balls at varying sizes and distances across the canvas, painting each as a flat green or sage circle before any snow goes on.

Vary the size of each snow cap rather than giving every ball an identical dome: a cap covering roughly a third of the ball reads as a light dusting, while one covering half reads as a heavier fall, and mixing both across the scene adds believability in a single move.

Keep the topiary balls at different distances from the viewer by making the nearer ones larger and lower on the canvas, and the further ones smaller and higher, a simple trick that gives instant depth without any complex perspective drawing.

If the sage green under the snow caps looks flat once dry, a thin warm yellow-green glaze over just the visible foliage brings it back to life without disturbing the white caps above it.

Palette: Sage Green,Titanium White,Soft Lilac,Icy Blue

A park fountain frozen and frosted with fresh snow gives you a nice change of shape after all those rounded domes. Paint the fountain’s stone basin and central tier as simple flat grey-white shapes first, keeping the structure symmetrical since fountains read oddly if their two sides do not match.

Build the frozen water as flat pale icy blue filling the basin, with a few jagged white cracks or ice ridges painted on top using a fine brush, since frozen water needs sharper, more angular marks than the soft drifted snow piled around the base.

This contrast between angular ice and soft rounded snow is the whole point of the scene, so keep the snow piled around the fountain’s base distinctly rounder and softer than the ice inside the basin, or the two textures blur into sameness.

No fine liner brush for the ice cracks: the edge of an old credit card dipped lightly in white paint and dragged across the surface creates a similarly sharp, broken line.

You Will Need

• fine brush or an old card edge for ice cracks

Palette: Icy Blue,Titanium White,Stone Grey,Soft Lilac

A steep city stairway with snow on every step turns perspective into the whole subject. Draw the stairway in pencil first using two lightly converging guide lines running from the bottom corners of the canvas up toward a point near the top, this single step keeps every stair tread the correct shrinking width as it climbs away from you.

Paint each step as a flat pale rectangle between the guide lines, then add a thin strip of darker shadow along the riser of each step, the vertical face just below the tread. That shadow strip is what separates one step from the next, without it the stairway flattens into one long ramp.

Keep the building walls on either side simple and muted so they frame the stairway without competing with it, and let the handrail, if you include one, follow the same converging lines as the steps.

One concrete tip: paint the furthest, smallest steps first and work downward and toward you, it is much easier to judge each step’s size against the one you just finished than to guess the whole sequence at once.

You Will Need

• pencil for perspective guide lines

Palette: Titanium White,Soft Lilac,Stone Grey,Charcoal Grey

A picnic table carrying a perfect slab of snow on top is a satisfying study in flat geometry. Paint the table’s wooden legs and bench supports first in a simple dark brown, visible just enough at the sides and underneath to anchor the shape, since the tabletop itself will be almost entirely hidden.

Build the snow slab as one clean rectangular block sitting squarely on the table, with crisp straight edges rather than the soft rounded piles used elsewhere on this list. This is the one scene in the whole set where straight, deliberate edges actually suit the snow better than soft curves, because the tabletop underneath is flat and square.

Shade just one long edge and one short edge of the slab in lilac to suggest its thickness, leaving the top surface and the two lit edges in flat white. Skipping this shading is the main reason the slab reads as a painted square rather than an actual block of snow sitting on the table.

Given only ten minutes, stop here with just the table and slab against a plain pale background. With forty minutes, add a light scatter of falling snow and a bare tree trunk beside the table for atmosphere.

Palette: Titanium White,Soft Lilac,Burnt Umber,Icy Blue

Swap the garden furniture for a clothesline of frozen pillowcases, a quirky little scene that rewards careful edges. Paint the line itself as one thin dark horizontal stroke stretched between two simple posts, then hang two or three pillowcases from it as stiff, slightly bent rectangles rather than soft drooping fabric, since frozen laundry holds an odd rigid shape instead of hanging naturally.

Lifting is the trick worth practising here: while the white paint on each pillowcase is still slightly wet, press a dry flat brush or a folded paper towel against a few areas and lift some paint away, revealing a touch of the pale background underneath. This creates the slightly translucent, frost-stiffened look of frozen fabric far better than painting it as solid flat white throughout.

Keep each pillowcase’s bent angle slightly different from its neighbours, since laundry frozen mid-sway rarely matches exactly, and this small variation makes the row feel more natural.

If you do not want to risk lifting wet paint, a dry brush loaded with a very small amount of icy blue dragged lightly over the dried white surface gives a similar frosted texture.

You Will Need

• flat brush or folded paper towel for lifting

Palette: Titanium White,Icy Blue,Soft Lilac,Charcoal Grey

A red phone box with snow drifting against its door is a strong graphic subject, easy to get right with a few careful proportion checks. Measure the box before you paint it: a classic phone box reads correctly when its height is roughly three times its width, so sketch a tall narrow rectangle at that ratio before adding the little window panes across the top half.

Paint the whole box in cherry red first, let it dry, then add the window frame grid in a slightly darker red or black, keeping the lines straight with a ruler if needed. Build the snowdrift against the base as one soft uneven mound climbing up one side more than the other, since wind always piles snow unevenly against a solid object.

The box can look flat and sticker-like if the drift sits too neatly around its base, so let the drift’s edge overlap slightly onto the lower window panes on the side where it piles highest.

Today’s tip: a thin dusting of white dry-brushed across the very top of the box suggests a light snow fall settling on the roof, tying the drift at the bottom to the weather in the sky.

You Will Need

• ruler for the window grid

Palette: Cherry Red,Titanium White,Soft Lilac,Charcoal Grey

Frame the first snowfall of the season from inside, seen through a window with a cat watching. Paint the window frame first as a simple dark border around the edges of the canvas, leaving the glass area as the main scene, then add a soft silhouette of a cat sitting on the windowsill just inside the frame, facing out.

Everything beyond the glass gets painted slightly softer and cooler than anything inside the room, since window glass naturally mutes and cools the view through it. Keep the falling snow and the street or garden beyond rendered in slightly hazier edges than the crisp cat silhouette and windowsill in front.

This contrast between the sharp interior shapes and the softer exterior view is what sells the sense of looking through glass, and it is the detail most often skipped. If the cat’s silhouette looks stiff, round off its back and ear shapes slightly rather than painting sharp triangular ears.

If you would rather skip the cat, a single potted plant on the sill does the same job of giving the window an inside edge to anchor against.

Palette: Charcoal Grey,Titanium White,Soft Lilac,Icy Blue

A row of beach huts under snow by a grey sea makes a lovely cold-weather twist on a summery subject. Paint the sea first as a flat band of muted grey-blue across the upper half of the canvas, then the sand or shingle beneath it in a pale cool grey, setting a quiet, almost monochrome mood before the huts go in.

Line up three or four beach huts along the shore as simple flat rectangular boxes with pointed roofs, keeping them evenly spaced but not identical in colour, a cherry red door on one hut is enough of an accent for the whole row.

Give each hut a thick cap of snow on its roof and a lighter dusting across its small porch step, then let a strip of undisturbed snow run along the ground in front of the whole row to tie the huts together as one scene rather than separate objects.

If the grey sea feels flat and lifeless once painted, break it with two or three short horizontal strokes of a slightly lighter grey near the horizon line to suggest gentle movement in the water.

Palette: Grey Blue,Titanium White,Cherry Red,Soft Lilac

Move into the garden for a snow-covered greenhouse with frost on the glass. Paint the greenhouse frame first in a simple dark metal tone, a straight ridged roofline and square panes, then fill the panes with a pale icy blue-white rather than clear glass, since frosted glass should look almost opaque.

Texture is the whole point of this one: once the pane colour is dry, dry brush a very light touch of pure white across a few of the panes in short diagonal strokes, imitating the uneven way frost crystals spread unevenly across glass rather than covering it uniformly.

Add a cap of snow along the roof ridge and a modest pile against the base of the greenhouse walls, keeping these softer and rounder than the frost pattern on the glass panes so the two textures stay visually distinct.

If a dry brush is not giving you a convincing frost pattern, try a slightly stiff old toothbrush loaded with a very small amount of white paint, flicked lightly toward the glass for a scattered, crystalline texture instead.

You Will Need

• dry brush or old toothbrush for frost texture

Palette: Icy Blue,Titanium White,Charcoal Grey,Soft Lilac

Bring in a small sign of life with sage leaves poking through snow in a raised garden bed. Paint the raised bed’s wooden frame first as a simple flat rectangle, then fill most of it with flat white snow, leaving a loose, irregular cluster of small gaps where the sage will show through.

Paint the visible sage leaves in a muted grey-green, keeping each leaf small and slightly rounded at the tip, since sage has a soft, slightly fuzzy silhouette rather than a sharp pointed one. Three or four leaves clustered together read far better than a single isolated leaf poking up alone.

Vary the size of each snow gap around the leaves rather than giving every leaf an identical neat circle of clearance, which keeps the scene from looking too tidy and deliberate for something as random as snow melting around a plant.

If grey-green paint looks too flat once dry, a thin warm yellow glaze along just the center of each leaf brings a touch of life back without disturbing the muted winter mood around it.

Palette: Sage Green,Titanium White,Soft Lilac,Burnt Umber

If you enjoy painting small garden details like this, the lavender painting ideas use a similar soft muted green and work well as a companion piece.

A footpath shoveled through deep snow to a cottage turns the ground itself into the main shape of the composition. Start by placing the cottage as a simple flat gable shape near the top third of the canvas, then build the deep snow filling the rest of the scene before the path is cut into it.

Paint the shoveled path as one continuous channel of slightly darker, duller snow winding from the bottom edge of the canvas up toward the cottage door, with the piled-up snow banks on either side kept noticeably brighter and higher than the path itself. That brightness contrast between the piled banks and the trodden path is what makes the shoveling read clearly.

Keep the path’s width consistent as it travels into the distance rather than letting it taper too sharply, real shoveled paths stay roughly the same width throughout, it is only the surrounding perspective of the scene that should shrink things near the cottage.

One concrete tip: paint the snow banks on either side of the path slightly taller and lumpier near the cottage, where shoveled snow is usually piled highest after repeated clearing.

Palette: Titanium White,Soft Lilac,Stone Grey,Burnt Umber

A lamppost wearing a snow cap at blue hour is a small, moody subject that leans entirely on light. Paint the sky first as a deep, even blue-violet, covering the whole background before the lamppost goes in, since this colour sets the entire mood of the piece and is much easier to judge against a finished sky than a half-painted one.

Place the lamppost as a tall, thin, perfectly vertical line, checked with a ruler if your hand tends to wander, with a small lantern shape at the top. Light the lantern with a warm pale yellow glow that spreads just slightly into the surrounding blue sky in a soft halo, the one warm note in an otherwise cool scene.

Add the snow cap sitting neatly on top of the lantern housing, catching a touch of that warm glow on its underside where the light hits it from below, and keep the ground beneath in flat cool white and lilac shadow, completely untouched by the warm light above head height.

If yellow and blue fight each other once placed side by side, mute the yellow slightly with a touch of white before it goes anywhere near the lantern.

You Will Need

• ruler for a straight lamppost

Palette: Deep Blue Violet,Pale Yellow,Titanium White,Soft Lilac

Snowflakes drifting down onto a dark garden pond gives you a chance to paint snow against something other than white ground. Paint the pond first as one flat, deep dark shape, almost black-green or charcoal, filling a good portion of the lower canvas, since this dark base is what will make every single snowflake pop once they are added on top.

Surround the pond’s edge with a thin ring of white snow along the bank, keeping the transition between dark water and white snow crisp and clean rather than blended, water and snow meet at a sharp line in real gardens.

Scatter snowflakes across the whole upper two thirds of the canvas, letting a few fall and disappear right at the water’s edge while most stay suspended against the sky, and leave a handful sitting visibly on the dark water’s surface before they melt, tiny white dots against the near-black pond.

If the dark pond colour looks flat once dry, add two or three short reflected streaks of pale lilac or icy blue across its surface to suggest the sky reflecting faintly in the water.

Palette: Charcoal Grey,Titanium White,Soft Lilac,Icy Blue

A small handprint pressed into the snow on a garden wall is one of the more intimate scenes here, built almost entirely from careful shadow placement. Paint the wall first as a flat stone or brick surface running across the canvas, then build an even layer of snow sitting on top of the wall’s flat upper ledge.

Press the handprint shape into that snow layer as a shallow hollow rather than a flat stamp: paint the outline of a hand, then shade the whole interior of that shape in soft lilac shadow, darkest right at the center of the palm where the pressure was greatest and lightening gradually toward the fingertip edges.

Getting the proportions of the hand right matters more here than the fine detail, so before you commit to paint, compare the length of the fingers to the width of the palm: fingers are roughly as long as the palm is wide, which keeps the print from looking stretched or childlike by accident.

If freehand hands feel tricky, press your own hand lightly into a bit of leftover white paint on scrap paper first and study the shape it leaves before painting the hollow on canvas.

Palette: Titanium White,Soft Lilac,Stone Grey,Icy Blue

Two bistro chairs outside a closed cafe wearing snow cushions make a charming paired composition. Paint both chairs first as simple curved wire or metal frames, kept identical in shape and size, since the whole charm of this scene relies on the pair reading as a matched set even under all that snow.

Build the snow cushion on each seat as one soft rounded mound, slightly different in size between the two chairs, since even a matched pair collects snow a little unevenly in a real scene. Let the chair backs stay mostly bare metal, showing just a light dusting along the top curve, so the chairs still read clearly as chairs rather than disappearing entirely under white.

Place the two chairs facing each other across a small round table, also capped with snow, and keep a plain, muted cafe wall or shuttered window behind them to suggest the business is closed for the season without adding too much extra detail.

One tip for today: paint the chair frames in a slightly warm dark tone rather than pure black, it keeps the scene feeling soft and wintry rather than stark against all that white.

Palette: Titanium White,Soft Lilac,Charcoal Grey,Cherry Red

A snowy rooftop garden in the city with a pigeon brings a bit of life above the street level. Paint the rooftop surface first as a flat pale plane filling most of the lower canvas, then add a few simple potted plants or a small bench along one edge, each capped lightly with snow, to establish that this is a garden rather than a bare roof.

City rooftops usually show other buildings rising around or behind them, so block in two or three simple building shapes at varying heights along the background, keeping them flatter and more muted in colour than anything in the foreground garden, which helps the rooftop itself stay the clear focus.

Paint the pigeon last, as a small plump grey silhouette standing on the rooftop ledge or among the potted plants, since getting its proportions right is easier once everything else around it is already placed and sized. A pigeon’s body is roughly round, with the head small in comparison and tucked close to the body rather than held high on a long neck.

If the whole rooftop feels too crowded once the buildings go in, mute their colours further or remove one, leaving more open pale sky to balance the busier foreground.

Palette: Titanium White,Stone Grey,Soft Lilac,Charcoal Grey

For more city rooftop inspiration at a slower pace, the Christmas village painting ideas cover a similar snowy skyline mood.

A quiet park path under arching snow-laden branches is a peaceful scene that rewards patience with the tree shapes. Paint the path itself first as a simple pale strip running from the bottom of the canvas up toward a vanishing point in the middle distance, using the same converging guide lines you would use for any receding path, narrower at the top than at the bottom.

Build the trees lining the path as simple dark trunks with branches that arch inward from both sides, meeting or nearly meeting above the path to form a loose tunnel shape, this arching is what gives the whole scene its quiet, enclosed feeling.

Add snow sitting along the top of every visible branch as a thin, continuous white line following each branch’s curve, rather than scattered blobs, since snow settles along the length of a branch in a fairly even ribbon. Let a few small clumps drop slightly heavier near the branch tips, where thinner wood bends and collects more snow.

If the branches start to look like a tangled mess, reduce the number you paint. Four or five clear, well-placed branches arching overhead read far better than a dozen crossing in every direction.

Palette: Titanium White,Charcoal Grey,Soft Lilac,Icy Blue

Close out with the most layered scene on the list: a hill of snowy rooftops seen from an attic window above them all. Paint a simple dark window frame around the very edges of the canvas first, same as the earlier window scene, but this time looking down and outward over a whole hillside of rooftops rather than straight ahead.

Build the rooftops as a cluster of overlapping flat shapes descending the hill, largest and most detailed near the bottom of the view and smaller, simpler and paler toward the top where the hill falls away into the distance. This change in size and detail across the hillside is what creates the sense of looking down from height.

Cap each roof with its own snow layer, varying the thickness as you did with the terracotta hill town earlier in this list, and let the furthest rooftops blur slightly into the pale sky rather than staying as crisp as the nearest ones.

If the whole hillside starts to feel repetitive, break it up with one taller chimney or a single bare tree poking above the rooftops partway down the hill, giving the eye one spot to rest among all that white.

Palette: Titanium White,Soft Lilac,Stone Grey,Charcoal Grey

If this scene appeals to you, the winter oil painting ideas cover a similar rooftop view for anyone curious about switching mediums later.

What to Do Next

Pick one scene, tape off a small canvas, and block in the sky or background first before a single white shape goes down, that order keeps every snow painting on this list honest and finishable in one sitting.

Frequently Asked Questions

What colours do I need for snow painting in acrylic?

A basic snow painting palette needs titanium white, a cool blue or grey for shadow, and a soft lilac or violet for deeper shade, plus one warm accent like cherry red. Keep every white mixed slightly, pure white alone looks flat and plastic on canvas.

How do I stop snow looking flat and grey in a painting?

Snow looks flat when every shadow is the same grey, so vary your shadow colour between icy blue in sunlit areas and soft lilac in deeper shade. Reserve pure white only for the brightest highlight edges, never the whole surface.

What is the easiest snow scene to paint first?

A single object with a simple snow cap, like a mailbox or lamppost, is the easiest starting point. It needs only a few flat shapes and one soft white dome, so you can finish the whole thing in well under an hour.

Do I need special brushes for painting snow texture?

No special brushes are required, though a dry stiff flat brush helps create dry brushed texture for frost and drift ridges. A round brush handle or a cotton swab works just as well for small dot flakes.

How small a canvas works for these snow painting ideas?

An eight inch by ten inch canvas suits every idea on this list comfortably, since each scene is built from a handful of simplified flat shapes. A smaller size works too, just keep detail minimal to match the scale.
