Table of Contents
A nutcracker junk journal gathers up the whole story in one set: the wooden soldier under the tree, the mouse king under the sofa, the sleigh ride into the Land of Sweets and the sugar plum stage at the end. This kit follows Marie’s night from the parlor to the theater, so the pages read almost like the ballet itself, scene by scene, in soft stage light.
Inside you get 23 full scene pages, 5 seamless background papers for covers and pockets, and 5 lined writing pages for the diary entries in between. Print everything on matte cardstock heavy enough to hold glue, set your printer to its best quality or photo setting, and trim each sheet to your journal size before you start gluing.
Using these images: free for personal projects such as printing, coloring, cards, journals and gifts. Handmade items that include them may be sold up to 30 pieces per design. More than that is commercial use and is not permitted, and neither is selling or sharing the images themselves or passing them off as your own. Please ask before any other use.
The Christmas Parlor
Under the tree sits the wooden nutcracker soldier, wrapped gifts, lit candles and a trail of pine needles painted behind him in soft gold light.
Tuck a short note here about the gift that started it all, a toy given or received, or paste in a tiny tag shaped like a wrapped present.
Marie stands in her nightgown holding her new nutcracker close, a tall decorated tree rising behind her, its candles and ornaments catching the same soft light that fills the whole room around her.
Pair this page with the silver snowflake and ballet slipper pattern from the backgrounds, using it as a pocket lining tucked just behind the stage.
Gears, small tools and a half carved soldier sit across the godfather’s cluttered workbench, with wood shavings and a lamp painted glowing softly nearby.
Toys And The Mouse Battle
The usual mistake on a marching page is lining the soldiers up too stiffly, which flattens the whole scene. Give a few of them turned heads or a tilted flag instead, and let the dollhouse and rocking horse sit a little behind them for depth.
Describe your own small battle here, a deadline won, a fear faced down, something that felt larger than it was until it ended.
Tin soldiers face off against small grey mice across the rug, a drum lying tipped on its side, moonlight from a parlor window painted falling over the whole little war.
The mouse king peers out from beneath the velvet sofa fringe, his little crown catching candlelight painted glowing softly across the darkened parlor floor around him.
Journey To The Land Of Sweets
Five minutes to spare and nothing else ready yet: glue this single sheet in as a full page and move straight on, it needs no extra fuss.
Marzipan towers rise beside sugar arches and ribbon flags, the candy palace glowing warmly under a painted pink sky stretched soft behind its sweet rooftops.
This page suits the dancer in the journal’s life, a daughter mid recital or a friend who still takes class on weekends just for the joy of it.
What question would you ask the dancer in this picture, about nerves, about practice, about the moment just before the curtain rises. Write it along the bottom edge.
A corps of snowflake dancers in white tutus turns together across a silver stage, painted snow drifting softly down around their lifted arms and pointed feet.
Place this page across from the sugar plum ballerina sheet so the two open as a pair, one dancer in solo light and a garden of dancers turning beside her.
A shell boat drifts across a rosy lake, golden fish gliding beneath the surface and sugar flowers floating near the shore in the soft painted light.
Glue in a real ticket stub or program scrap here if you have one tucked away, tea staining its edge first so it blends with the red velvet seats and lace.
Tutus hang along the wall beside a dance studio barre, pointe shoes resting on the floor and a tall mirror reflecting the whole quiet room behind them.
Try this one with a beginner’s light wash for the tree and a confident hand only for the small candle flames, it keeps the page from feeling too busy.
Dolls, small soldiers and a carved nutcracker stand together on the top shelf of a glass cabinet, soft candlelight painted glowing across the glass panes around them.
A simple still life for a quiet entry, a wish for the new year or a short list of this season’s small comforts set beside the nutcracker and its bowl of nuts.
Walnuts and hazelnuts sit gathered in a bowl beside the nutcracker, a single candle burning warmly and casting a soft glow across the wooden table around them.
A dancer in a Russian costume leaps beside painted candy canes, bold red and gold ribbons trailing behind her against a glowing stage backdrop.
Journey To The Land Of Sweets
Readers new to this set often crowd the lanterns too close together here, so leave real space between them and let the dancer’s veils carry the motion instead.
Mother Ginger’s giant hooped skirt spreads wide across the stage, tiny clowns tumbling out from beneath it, bright ribbons and bells painted trailing around the whole lively scene.
Save this last scene page for the closing entry of the journal, a line about the story ending and the ribbon tied, matched to a music box still turning.
Background Papers
Small nutcrackers and drums repeat in rows across this sheet, useful as a pocket lining, a cover wrap or slipped behind a photo of your own holiday toys.
Pink tutus and satin ribbons scatter across this paper, soft enough to sit behind a dancer photo, line a gift envelope or wrap a small keepsake box.
Sugar plum shapes and candy swirls cover this sheet end to end, a cheerful choice for a journal cover, a pocket lining or the backing behind a ticket stub.
Red and gold stripes carry tiny toy soldiers between them, strong enough for a cover sheet, a pocket lining or the border strip behind a photo of the tree.
Silver snowflakes and small ballet slippers drift across this paper, a soft match for the snowflake corps scene, a pocket lining or a cover for the whole journal.
Lined Writing Pages
A nutcracker soldier pair stands along the side border, leaving the ruled lines free for a gift list, a holiday menu or a short letter to next year’s self.
A red stage curtain swags across the top border here, perfect for recording a favorite line from the ballet, a wish for next season or a short ticket diary entry.
Satin ribbon curls around one corner beside a small pointe shoe, leaving space below for a dance recital note, a costume list or a letter to a young dancer.
A candy palace arch frames the whole page in sugared detail, good for a sweets recipe, a holiday guest list or a short letter about the season just passed.
A small ballerina turns among snowflakes along the bottom footer, room above for a closing journal entry, a thank you note or a list of this winter’s small joys.
What to Do Next
Print the full set, sort the pages into their three groups, and start gluing from the Christmas parlor through to the sugar plum stage so the story unfolds in order as you go. For more seasonal pages to mix in, see the vintage Christmas junk journal set or the winter junk journal pages.
Frequently Asked Questions
What paper works best for a nutcracker junk journal?
Matte cardstock around 32lb holds color well and takes glue without curling. Lighter paper works too if you plan to tea stain edges, since it tears and ages more easily than heavy cardstock.
What printer settings give the best results?
Set your printer to its highest quality or photo setting and choose matte or cardstock paper type if your printer offers it. This keeps the soft watercolor washes even instead of streaky.
What size should I print these pages?
Standard US letter or A4 works for most journals, then trim down to your cover size afterward. Print a test page first to check your trim margins before running the whole set.
What do I use to color in details or add journaling?
Fine tip pens work well for names, dates and short notes since the ink sits cleanly on the printed watercolor. Colored pencils can add a touch more shading to a scene without disturbing the printed art.
How do I glue the pages into a journal without wrinkling them?
Use a thin, even layer of acid free glue stick and press each page flat under a book for a few minutes while it dries. Avoid wet glue, which tends to warp the thinner cardstock as it dries.
