28 Winter Landscape Painting Ideas in a Loose Modern Watercolor Style With Tiny Figures

56

A good winter landscape painting does not need ten colors or a week at the easel. It needs a wet wash, a confident brush and a few tiny figures doing something human: skating, carrying a tree, waiting in line for bread. That is the whole trick of the loose 1940s illustrator look that keeps turning up on gallery walls and Pinterest boards right now, and it happens to be one of the fastest, most forgiving ways to paint.

Below are 28 scenes built for exactly that style: cool blue and violet washes, white paper left bare for snow, and pops of red, mustard or pink wherever a person stands. Pick whichever one matches your mood tonight, and you will have a finished piece, framed-print-ready, before the kettle goes cold twice.

Before You Start

• Stretch or tape down watercolor paper first, because these washes carry a lot of water and thin paper will buckle and pool in the wrong places.
• Mix your sky and snow-shadow colors big and loose in a dish before you start, since chasing a color mid-wash breaks the loose look you are going for.
• Keep a scrap of the same paper beside you and test every mix there first, especially the violets and blues that look very different wet versus dry.
• Paint the whole sky and snow-ground wash first while the paper is still damp, then add buildings, trees and figures once it is barely moist or fully dry.
• Leave the white of the paper alone wherever snow needs to read as bright, since painting white on top always looks chalky next to true paper white.
• Keep the tiny figures to three or four brush dabs each: one for the coat color, one for the head, maybe one for a scarf, nothing more detailed than that.

Pastel houses line up best as a single loose wash first: lay a wet-into-wet stripe of pale blue-gray for the sky, then drop in blush pink, butter yellow and soft green rectangles wet-into-wet along the horizon line for the row of houses, letting the colors bleed softly into each other at the edges.

Once that layer is dry, paint the frozen canal below as one flat, pale blue-violet wash, leaving a streak of white paper untouched for the shine of the ice. Add roof lines, a few dark window dots and chimney smoke with a fine liner or small round brush once everything is bone dry.

The skaters go in last: three or four dabs of red, mustard and navy, each just a comma-shaped stroke for a body and a tiny dot for a head, scattered across the ice at different heights to suggest distance.

If your houses bleed into mud, you let the wash stay wet too long before adding the next color; next time, paint each house shape separately and let it dry slightly before its neighbor goes in.

You Will Need

• cold-press paper
• flat wash brush
• fine liner pen
• masking tape for a clean edge

Palette: Cerulean Blue,Naples Yellow,Rose Pink,Payne’s Grey

Try tilting the paper slightly while the canal wash is still wet so the blue pools toward one edge, giving the ice a natural gradient instead of a flat block of color.

Start where the last scene left off, with a flat wash, but tip the brush sideways this time: load a large round with pale violet-blue and sweep one long diagonal stroke across the paper for the ski slope, leaving the top third white for sky and the bottom edge white for drifted snow.

While that wash is still slightly damp, drag a dry brush loaded with a darker blue-grey along the base of the slope to suggest shadow and give the hill some roll. Let it dry completely before adding any dark pine trees along the ridge with the tip of a round brush.

Use a measuring trick here: hold your brush at arm’s length against the slope to check that your trees shrink evenly as they march toward the horizon, since uneven scaling is the easiest way to flatten the sense of distance.

Finish with five or six tiny skiers: a single red dab for the jacket, a thin dark line for two skis beneath, placed at different points along the slope so some read as near and some as far. Keep the red jackets as the only truly warm color in the whole piece.

You Will Need

• large round brush
• dry brush for texture
• small round for figures
• scrap paper for testing reds

Palette: Ultramarine Violet,Payne’s Grey,Cadmium Red,Hooker’s Green

Keep two or three skiers slightly larger and lower on the slope than the rest, since varied spacing reads as more alive than an evenly scattered row.

Carrying a tree home is a quieter scene, so build it around empty space rather than detail. Wash the whole paper with a very pale blue-grey for overcast sky, then let a slightly deeper violet pool along the bottom third for the snowy hill, keeping the wash loose and uneven on purpose.

Once dry, paint the lone figure as a small dark silhouette, little more than a triangle for a coat and two thin lines for legs, with a slim dark shape slanting from one shoulder for the tree they are dragging. Keep the figure small against all that pale sky, since the loneliness of the scene depends on scale.

This is the kind of idea where light direction matters: decide where a weak winter sun sits (try just above one horizon edge) and drag one long soft shadow from the figure in that direction using a grey-violet mix, which instantly grounds them in the snow.

If the figure looks stiff, loosen your wrist and repaint it as one fast gesture rather than building it from careful lines. A fine liner is a good backup if your brush keeps overworking the shape.

You Will Need

• small round brush
• fine liner backup
• large wash brush
• clean water jar

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Lavender,Charcoal Black,Cool White (paper)

Try this one in near-monochrome, just blue-grey and charcoal, and save your only warm color for a single red scarf, which makes the whole painting feel more like a modern print.

Build this one in layers of light rather than layers of detail. Start with a deep blue-violet wash for the dusky sky and lake behind the café, painted wet-into-wet so the color graduates softly from dark at the top to slightly paler near the horizon.

Once that is fully dry, paint the café building as a simple warm rectangle in mustard or soft terracotta, with a few dark window shapes, and let it sit against all that cool blue behind it. The outdoor tables are just small ovals in pale color with tiny dots of people around them in red, pink and navy.

The fairy lights are the forty-minute touch: once everything else is bone dry, flick tiny dots of white gouache or a white gel pen along the café’s edge and above the tables. The ten-minute version skips this and lets the warm windows alone suggest the glow.

If your sky and building edges blur together, your building wash went on before the sky was properly dry; wait the extra five minutes, it is worth it. For an easier swap, use a white paint pen instead of gouache for the lights.

You Will Need

• white gouache or gel pen
• small flat brush for the building
• round brush for figures
• hairdryer for faster drying between layers

Palette: Indigo,Mustard Yellow,Dusty Rose,Titanium White

Paint the lake as a mirror: drop a thin reflection of the café’s warm color straight down into the blue water wash before it dries, which doubles the glow for free.

Mountains ask for restraint, so paint the furthest peaks first as the palest, most diluted violet-grey wash you can mix, then move forward with each new mountain layer slightly darker and more saturated. This single trick, pale and far, dark and near, does most of the perspective work for you.

Once the mountain layers are dry, drop in a cluster of small village roofs at the base in warm mustard and rust, with simple dark window dots. Keep the roofs small compared to the mountains behind them so the scale reads honestly.

The red train is the hero mark: a single confident horizontal stroke of cadmium red with a thin trail of grey-white steam, placed low across the village like a ribbon. Add it last, on dry paper, so the red stays crisp and does not bleed into the snow.

If your mountains look flat, you likely used the same value for all of them; mix three distinct greys before you start and stick to that ladder. Watch how this subject pairs with the loose approach in this easy landscape painting guide if mountains still feel tricky.

You Will Need

• three pre-mixed greys for distance
• fine round brush for the train
• mustard and rust paint for roofs
• clean water for soft edges

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Lavender Grey,Burnt Sienna,Cadmium Red

Add one tiny plume of white gouache steam trailing behind the train, angled slightly backward, to suggest motion without adding any extra detail elsewhere.

Bare trees are the backbone of this scene, so draw them first with a dry, almost scratchy brush loaded with dark grey-brown, dragging upward from the base so the branches naturally thin and split. Do this on dry paper before any wash goes down, which keeps the branches crisp against what comes next.

Once the trees are dry, wash a very pale blue-violet over the whole ground and sky, painting carefully around the tree trunks so they stay dark and separate. This is the one hands-on trick worth mastering here: use a damp brush to lift a little color right around each trunk base if the wash creeps over it, restoring the contrast.

Add two or three tiny figures walking along the path, each a simple coat-colored blob with a thin dark leash line down to an even smaller dog shape. Vary the coat colors, mustard, red, navy, so each pair reads as a separate little story.

If the whole park looks too busy, reduce to one tree and one pair of walkers rather than crowding the page. A fan brush is a good swap for the dry-brush branches if yours feels too soft.

You Will Need

• dry round or fan brush for branches
• pale violet wash paint
• small brush for figures and dogs
• clean water for lifting

Palette: Sepia,Pale Violet,Mustard Yellow,Navy Blue

Try giving one dog a bright red coat instead of leaving it plain, since one unexpected spot of color on an animal reads as charming rather than busy.

Give the ice its shine before anything else goes on top. Lay a smooth, pale blue-white wash across the lower half of the paper for the frozen lake, tilting the paper gently so the wet paint settles into soft streaks that read as natural ice texture.

Once dry, sketch in a loose rectangle of slightly darker blue for the rink boundary, just a shade, not a hard line, and add two tiny goal shapes at either end in thin dark strokes. This keeps the eye oriented without turning the ice into a diagram.

The hockey players are the fun part: four or five small figures in contrasting jerseys (try red versus navy), each just a vertical dab with a stick-line stroke angled toward a tiny dark puck dot. Add one small tan-and-white dog shape chasing the puck off to one side, slightly blurred at the edges to suggest it is running.

If your players all look identical, change their stance: some leaning forward, one mid-stride, one static near the goal. For an easier version, three players and the dog is plenty for a ten-minute piece.

You Will Need

• flat brush for the ice wash
• fine brush for hockey sticks
• two jersey colors
• small round for the dog

Palette: Ice Blue,Cadmium Red,Navy Blue,Raw Umber

Leave a thin streak of untouched white paper running diagonally across the ice to catch the light, it does more for the frozen feel than any amount of blue shading.

Poplars line up fastest with a ruler trick you will not use directly: before you paint, lightly pencil two converging guide lines from the bottom corners of the page toward a point roughly two-thirds up, so you know how far apart to space each tree as they recede.

Paint the sky and snowy field first as one soft wash, pale violet-grey fading to white near the ground. Once dry, paint the poplars as tall, narrow vertical strokes, biggest and darkest in the foreground, each one slightly shorter and paler as it follows your guide lines toward the farmhouse.

The farmhouse sits small at the vanishing point: a simple warm rectangle with a steep dark roof and one lit window in mustard or warm orange, the only true warm note in the whole piece. Paint that window last, on dry paper, so it stays bright and clean.

If your poplars drift out of line, that pencil guide is the fix, keep it faint enough to vanish under the paint but firm enough to follow. A ruler edge works fine if freehand feels shaky.

You Will Need

• pencil for light guide lines
• fine round for poplar trunks
• warm paint for the window
• ruler (optional)

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Lavender,Burnt Orange,Charcoal Black

Add one tiny crow as a dark comma-shape in the sky above the road, it gives the eye a second point of interest beside the lit window.

Keep the slope simple so the action on top can carry the scene. One smooth diagonal wash of pale blue-violet, white paper left bare at the crest for snow glare, is all the hill needs, with a soft darker shadow dragged along its lower curve while still damp.

The small church goes at the base, a simple triangle roof over a narrow rectangle body with one tiny steeple line, painted in soft grey or dusty blue so it recedes rather than dominates. Let it dry fully before adding the sledders above it.

Children sledding read best as fast, loose marks: a red sled shape as a thin curved stroke, a mustard coat blob leaning back, repeated two or three times down the slope at different sizes so the nearest child is biggest. Resist outlining them, a few confident dabs say more than careful detail.

If the hill looks static, add one thin curved line trailing behind each sled, like a ski track in the snow, which instantly suggests speed. Swap the church for a simple cottage if you want an even faster version.

You Will Need

• large wash brush
• small round for sledders
• fine liner for the steeple
• scrap paper to test reds

Palette: Cerulean Blue,Cadmium Red,Mustard Yellow,Dove Grey

Try varying the sled colors, red, mustard, pink, rather than repeating the same one, so the eye can follow three separate little stories down the hill.

Anchor the whole square around one big tree, painted first as a tall, loosely layered dark green shape with a dry-brush texture along its edges so it does not read as a solid triangle. Let the brush bounce and skip across the paper rather than dragging smoothly, which gives the branches a natural, needled look.

Once the tree is dry, wash the buildings behind it in flat, muted blocks of blue-grey and dusty pink, simple rectangles with a few dark window dots, kept deliberately plain so the tree and figures stay the focus.

Shoppers cluster near the base of the tree: four or five small figures in varied warm colors, each carrying a tiny rectangle or two for shopping bags in a contrasting shade. Group them in twos and threes rather than a single row, which feels more like a real crowd.

If the tree looks too neat, load your brush with less water and more pigment and dab rather than stroke. For a quicker version, three shoppers and a simpler tree silhouette still reads well on busy, phone-sized prints.

You Will Need

• dry brush for the tree texture
• small round for shoppers
• blue-grey and dusty pink for buildings
• fine liner for bag details

Palette: Hooker’s Green,Dusty Pink,Payne’s Grey,Cadmium Red

Dot a few tiny warm lights into the big tree with white or pale yellow gouache once it is dry, which turns a plain pine into a city Christmas tree instantly.

Water and sky share one wash to start, a long horizontal sweep of blue-violet across the top two-thirds of the page, left slightly uneven so it reads as choppy winter sea rather than flat glass. While it is still damp, dab in a line of small, varied-colored boat hulls along the harbor edge, red, mustard, teal, letting the wet paper soften their edges slightly.

Once dry, paint the coastal town behind the harbor as a simple row of narrow pastel buildings climbing the hillside, each just a rectangle and a triangle roof, kept small against all that sea and sky.

A dusting of snow sits on the rooftops and the harbor wall: leave thin strips of white paper untouched along every roofline and wall edge rather than painting snow on top, which keeps it crisp. This is the detail that most separates a snowy coastal scene from a plain seaside one.

If the boats bleed into one indistinct smear, your paper was too wet when you added them; next time, let the base wash sit a minute longer before dabbing in color. A fine liner can redraw crisp hull edges afterward if needed.

You Will Need

• large wash brush for sea and sky
• small round for boats
• fine liner for roof edges
• masking fluid (optional) for crisp snow lines

Palette: Prussian Blue,Teal,Cadmium Red,Mustard Yellow

Try masking fluid along the rooflines before you wash the sky, then peel it off at the end for perfectly crisp snow edges without any careful painting around.

Sunset decides everything here, so mix that sky first: a soft gradient from warm pink near the horizon up into cool violet overhead, blended wet-into-wet while the paper is fully saturated so the colors melt into each other with no hard line.

Once that dries, wash the snowy field below in a pale version of the same violet, keeping it much lighter than the sky so the horizon stays the clear focal point. The horse and sleigh sit right on that horizon line as a small dark silhouette, simple curved strokes for the horse’s back and neck, a thin rectangle for the sleigh trailing behind.

Because the light source sits low and warm, every shadow here should stretch long and cool toward the viewer; drag a thin violet-grey shadow from the sleigh’s silhouette across the pale snow to sell the time of day.

If your sunset looks striped rather than blended, you waited too long between colors; work fast and keep the paper wet throughout that first wash. One small rider silhouette on the sleigh seat adds just enough story without extra detail.

You Will Need

• large wash brush for the gradient sky
• small round for the silhouette
• plenty of water for a smooth blend
• scrap paper to test the pink-violet transition

Palette: Rose Pink,Violet,Charcoal Black,Pale Lavender

Work on paper that is still shiny-wet for the sunset gradient, and tilt it gently side to side as you paint so the pink and violet drift into each other on their own.

Pink sky, dark cabin, that contrast is the whole painting, so start with the sky: a soft wash of warm pink fading into pale lavender near the top, painted loosely so the two colors blend without a hard seam.

Once dry, paint the cabin as a simple dark silhouette, a rectangle body, a steep triangle roof, kept small and slightly off-center rather than placed dead in the middle. Leave the red door as untouched paper at this stage.

Add the smoke next with a thin, wavering grey line drifting up from the chimney and softening into the pink sky; a slightly damp brush dragged upward gives it a believable curl. Only once everything else is dry do you paint the door itself, a small, confident rectangle of cadmium red that becomes the one bright note in the whole piece.

If the cabin looks flat, add one small dark triangle of shadow along one side where the roof meets the wall. Snow-laden fir trees beside the cabin are an easy next-time variation once this version feels solid.

You Will Need

• small round for the silhouette
• fine liner for the chimney smoke
• cadmium red for the door
• large brush for the sky wash

Palette: Rose Pink,Pale Lavender,Charcoal Black,Cadmium Red

Paint the door last every time, after everything else is completely dry, since one clean, isolated red shape reads far stronger than red added while the painting is still busy.

Rows are the structure of this whole scene, so plan them before you paint: lightly pencil a few lines fanning outward from a point near the horizon, the same converging trick used for poplar roads, so your vineyard rows will recede convincingly.

Wash the sky and snowy ground first in pale violet-grey, then once dry, paint each vineyard row as a short, repeated dark stroke along your guide lines, spacing them tighter as they near the horizon and wider in the foreground. This single change in spacing does most of the depth work.

The little tractor sits among the nearer rows, a simple boxy shape in faded red or mustard with two small dark circles for wheels, kept smaller than you think it should be so the rows still dominate.

If the rows look mechanical, vary the pressure on your brush slightly from stroke to stroke rather than repeating an identical mark. For a faster version, three or four rows either side of the tractor is enough, you do not need to fill the whole page.

You Will Need

• pencil for guide lines
• fine round for vineyard rows
• small brush for the tractor
• ruler (optional) for the guide lines

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Lavender Grey,Faded Red,Mustard Yellow

Try adding one tiny bare tree at the edge of the rows for scale, a single small trunk makes the converging vineyard lines read as much larger than the page actually is.

Winter sea reads best as a quiet, almost flat wash, so lay one even stripe of grey-blue across the upper half of the page for the sea and sky together, letting them merge with no clear horizon line for a misty, off-season feel.

Once dry, paint the promenade as a simple pale strip along the bottom edge, a few lamp post lines in dark grey standing upright at intervals, their tops just a small dot or curve.

The walker and poodle are the charm of this one: a single figure in a bright coat, mustard or pink, with a thin leash line curving down to a small fluffy white-and-grey poodle shape, its coat suggested with a few tiny dry-brush dabs rather than drawn fur.

If the poodle looks like a blob, dab rather than stroke for its coat texture, lifting the brush between each small mark. Swap the poodle for any small dog shape using the same dabbed technique if that breed feels fiddly.

You Will Need

• flat brush for the grey sea wash
• fine round for lamp posts
• dry brush for the poodle’s coat texture
• bright paint for the walker’s coat

Palette: Grey Blue,Charcoal Black,Mustard Yellow,Soft White

Keep the sea and sky the same muted grey-blue with no visible horizon, which pushes all the attention straight onto the one bright-coated walker and her dog.

Rows of trees again, but this time upright rather than vined, so plant them with a simple proportion check: pick your tallest, nearest tree first, then make every other tree some clear fraction of that height depending on how far back it sits, roughly half height at the midpoint, a quarter near the back.

Paint the trees with a dry, slightly loaded brush, dabbing upward in short strokes so each one looks needled rather than smooth, using two or three greens so the rows do not look identical.

Families choosing trees go in once everything is dry: small clusters of two or three figures in warm colors standing beside a tree they are considering, maybe one child figure reaching up toward a low branch. Keep the clusters spaced unevenly across the rows rather than in a neat grid.

If your trees all end up the same size, that proportion check is the fix, measure the first tree against your thumb and use that same thumb-width to judge every other one. A simpler version uses just one family and three trees for a ten-minute piece.

You Will Need

• dry brush for needled texture
• two or three greens
• small round for figures
• thumb or pencil for measuring

Palette: Hooker’s Green,Sap Green,Cadmium Red,Mustard Yellow

Dot a few tiny red ribbons or tags onto chosen trees with a fine liner once everything is dry, a small detail that instantly tells the story of a tree farm.

Dusk light is the subject here, so decide first where the warmth comes from: the lamps themselves, which means everything around them should stay cool and muted so those small warm dots can do all the work.

Paint the river and sky as one continuous cool violet-blue wash, then once dry, add the bridge as a simple dark arched shape crossing the middle of the page, its reflection painted as a softer, slightly broken version of the same shape in the water below.

The lamps sit evenly along the bridge rail as small dark posts with a dab of warm mustard or white gouache for the glow, and a thin reflected streak of that same warm color dropped straight down into the water beneath each one.

Couples walking the bridge are small dark silhouettes in pairs, close together, maybe one pair paused at the rail. If the bridge arch looks uneven, lightly pencil the curve first using a coin or lid as a guide before committing in paint. A watercolor pencil is a good swap for final linework if your liner bleeds on damp paper.

You Will Need

• pencil and a round object for the arch guide
• fine liner for lamp posts
• white gouache for the glow
• large brush for the river wash

Palette: Indigo,Payne’s Grey,Mustard Yellow,Titanium White

Drop each lamp’s reflection into the water while that wash is still slightly damp so it blurs softly downward, which reads far more convincingly than a sharp painted streak.

Build the chalet from the roof down, since that steep snow-laden roofline sets the whole alpine character. Paint it as a thick dark triangle with a ragged white edge left as bare paper along the top for a heavy snow cap, then add the timbered body beneath in warm brown.

Once dry, paint the small balcony as a simple horizontal rail shape, and lean two or three thin ski shapes against it in alternating bright colors, red and mustard work well, with tiny dark dots for the bindings.

Mountains behind follow the same pale-to-dark distance trick used earlier: your furthest peaks should be your most diluted wash, with the chalet itself the darkest, nearest shape in the whole painting.

If the chalet feels too plain, add one small lit window and a thin line of smoke from a chimney, echoing the cabin idea but set against mountains rather than open sky. Swap skis for a sled leaning against the rail for an equally quick variation.

You Will Need

• dry brush for the snow-capped roof
• fine liner for ski shapes
• diluted paint for distant mountains
• warm brown for timber

Palette: Burnt Umber,Payne’s Grey,Cadmium Red,Mustard Yellow

Leave the entire roof ridge as untouched white paper rather than painting snow onto a dark roof, since bare paper always reads brighter and crisper than white paint.

Verticals carry this one, so paint the lighthouse first as a single tall, narrow shape, slightly tapered toward the top, in alternating bands of white (left as bare paper) and cadmium red, keeping the bands a little uneven for a hand-painted rather than ruled look.

Once the tower is dry, wash the sky behind it in a cold, stormy grey-blue, painted wet-into-wet so it looks heavy with weather, and let the sea below settle into a darker, choppier version of the same color with a few white-capped dry-brush flecks.

Snow dusts the rocks at the lighthouse base: leave patches of white paper bare among dark rock shapes rather than painting snow over them, the same bare-paper trick used throughout this list and the fastest way to keep snow looking bright.

If your red bands wobble, a strip of masking tape down each side of the tower before painting keeps the edges crisp; peel it away once dry. One tiny dark gull shape in the sky adds scale without any extra effort.

You Will Need

• masking tape for crisp edges
• fine round for the lighthouse bands
• dry brush for choppy sea texture
• cadmium red and grey-blue paint

Palette: Cadmium Red,Storm Grey,Prussian Blue,Soft White

Flick a little white gouache off an old toothbrush toward the base of the tower for fine, scattered snow spray, a quick way to suggest a windy coastal day.

Mist is mostly about value, not color, so keep every green in this scene close in tone and let distance do the fading: your nearest pines should be the darkest, most detailed, and each row behind should get paler and softer until the furthest ones nearly vanish into the pale grey-violet background wash.

Paint that background wash first, then once dry, add pine shapes from back to front, dry-brushing the nearer ones with real texture and keeping the distant ones as soft, flat, almost blurred triangles.

The hiker in the yellow coat is the only saturated color allowed anywhere in this piece, a small simple figure walking a path between the trees, painted last so that mustard or true yellow jumps forward against all that cool mist.

If the forest looks flat rather than foggy, you have not varied the greys enough between layers; push the furthest trees paler than feels natural, it almost always looks right once dry. A damp paper towel dabbed gently over a dried background layer can soften it further if needed.

You Will Need

• dry brush for near pines
• diluted grey-green for distant pines
• bright yellow for the coat
• paper towel for softening if needed

Palette: Hooker’s Green,Grey Green,Cadmium Yellow,Pale Violet Grey

Keep the hiker small and a little off-center rather than centered on the path, since a smaller figure against a large misty forest reads as far more atmospheric.

Warm light against cold snow is the whole story, so start with the building in a flat wash of warm terracotta or mustard, painted on dry paper so the edges stay crisp against the cool scene around it. One or two dark window shapes and a simple striped awning finish the building.

Once dry, wash the snowy street and sky around it in pale blue-violet, painting carefully up to the building’s edge so the warm color stays sharp and separate, the same contrast trick used for the lakeside café.

The queue is a simple line of small figures in varied coat colors, standing close together outside the door, each just a coat-colored blob with a thin dark line for legs, slightly overlapping so they read as a real line rather than scattered dots.

If the queue looks like a row of identical lollipops, vary the heights and coat colors more than feels natural, real queues are never neat. For a quicker version, three figures waiting is enough to tell the whole story.

You Will Need

• small flat brush for the building
• fine liner for the awning stripes
• round brush for the queue figures
• warm terracotta or mustard paint

Palette: Terracotta,Pale Violet,Cadmium Red,Mustard Yellow

Add one small steaming paper bag or loaf shape near the door in a quick dab of brown, a tiny prop that instantly tells the eye what this queue is for.

Rooftops read as a rhythm of angled shapes, so block them in first as a simple skyline of dark grey-blue triangles and rectangles of varied heights along the lower half of the page, painted while slightly damp so their edges stay soft against each other rather than hard-lined.

Wash the dusk sky above in a warm pink-to-violet gradient, blended wet-into-wet, and let a little of that warm color bleed gently into the tops of the nearest rooftops for unity between sky and city.

Snow sits as thin bare-paper lines along every roof ridge and chimney top rather than painted white, and one or two tiny warm windows, dabbed last in mustard, give the skyline its lived-in feel.

If the skyline looks too even, vary your rooftop heights more dramatically and add one taller spire or chimney breaking the rhythm. For reference on Parisian rooftop shapes and color, the French-inspired ideas here are worth a look before you start.

You Will Need

• large brush for the sky gradient
• fine round for rooftop edges
• mustard paint for lit windows
• scrap paper for the pink-violet blend

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Rose Pink,Violet,Mustard Yellow

Keep the rooftop silhouette slightly uneven and the chimneys crooked rather than ruler-straight, which is most of what gives a skyline its hand-painted charm.

Bare orchard trees need a different gesture than pines, so paint each trunk as a single upward stroke that splits into two or three thinner branches near the top, using a drier brush than you think you need so the lines stay fine and twiggy rather than thick.

Space four or five of these trees loosely across a pale violet-grey snow wash, varying their height slightly so the orchard feels planted rather than stamped from a template.

Two small figures gathering branches go beneath one of the trees, simple coat-colored blobs bent slightly forward, with a few thin dark lines scattered on the snow nearby to suggest fallen twigs they are collecting.

If the trees look too uniform, this is the moment to vary your next attempt: try the same orchard in full blossom instead of bare branches next time, using the identical trunk technique with small dabs of pink added at the tips. For today, keep the figures small so the trees stay the clear subject.

You Will Need

• dry fine brush for branches
• pale violet-grey for snow
• small round for figures
• scrap paper to test branch pressure

Palette: Sepia,Pale Violet Grey,Mustard Yellow,Dusty Rose

Hold the brush near the very end of the handle for the branch strokes rather than close to the bristles, which naturally loosens your line and keeps it from looking too controlled.

Platforms need one strong perspective line to feel real, so pencil a single horizon-level line across the page first and let the platform edge, the train side and the overhead canopy all angle gently toward one point near that line.

Paint the train itself as a long dark shape running the width of the page, a few simple window rectangles in warm yellow light, and the platform as a flat pale grey-violet strip beneath it, kept much lighter than the train so the two stay distinct.

Travelers stand in small clusters along the platform, each a simple coat-colored blob with a tiny dark rectangle suitcase beside their feet, spaced unevenly so the scene feels like a real moment rather than a lineup.

If the perspective still feels off, check that every platform-edge and canopy line genuinely points toward your single pencil mark; one stray line is usually the culprit. The watercolor painting guide has more on perspective washes if this one challenges you.

You Will Need

• pencil for the perspective line
• long flat brush for the train
• small round for travelers and suitcases
• warm yellow for train windows

Palette: Charcoal Black,Mustard Yellow,Pale Violet Grey,Cadmium Red

Add one tiny puff of white gouache steam near the train’s front to suggest it is about to depart, which gives the whole platform a sense of a moment about to end.

Isolation is the mood, so leave generous empty space around the subject rather than filling the page. Wash a pale, nearly colorless blue-grey across most of the paper for icy water and flat winter sky, letting the two merge without a defined horizon.

The island sits small and slightly off-center, just a dark rocky mound with one tiny house on top, simple triangle roof and rectangle body, no bigger than a thumbnail against all that surrounding pale wash.

Near the island’s edge, paint the rowboat caught in ice: a simple curved hull shape in faded red or grey, tilted slightly as though frozen mid-lean, with a few jagged white-paper cracks left bare in the water around it to suggest broken ice.

If the scene feels empty rather than quiet, that is usually the point, resist the urge to add more; one house, one boat is enough. For a bolder mood, deepen the surrounding wash to a stormier grey-violet instead of the pale version.

You Will Need

• large wash brush for open water and sky
• small round for the island house
• fine liner for ice crack lines
• faded red or grey for the boat

Palette: Pale Grey Blue,Charcoal Black,Faded Red,Soft White

Leave far more blank paper around the island than feels comfortable at first, the empty space is what makes this one feel like a real art print rather than a busy scene.

Snowfall is the detail that makes this one, so paint everything else first: a soft pale wash for the park background, a simple dark bench shape with two small figures seated close together, one holding a small thermos shape between them with a thin curl of steam rising.

Once every layer is completely dry, flick clean water or a weak white gouache mix off the tip of your brush across the whole painting for falling snow, varying the size of the flicks so some dots are larger and nearer, some tiny and far.

Keep the couple’s coats in contrasting warm colors, mustard and dusty rose work well, so they stand out clearly against the pale, snowy background behind the bench.

If the snow flicks look too uniform, mix two separate batches, a thicker white for near flakes and a thinner, more diluted one for distant flakes, and flick them in two passes. An old toothbrush gives an even finer, more scattered spray than a paintbrush alone.

You Will Need

• old toothbrush or brush for flicking snow
• white gouache or masking fluid
• small round for figures and bench
• fine liner for the thermos steam

Palette: Mustard Yellow,Dusty Rose,Pale Violet Grey,Titanium White

Protect the edges of your paper with scrap paper before flicking snow, since a stray flick of white gouache lands fastest on everything except the page.

Night glow needs dark surroundings to work, so build the whole background first in deep blue-violet, buildings as simple dark rectangles, the rink itself as a flat pale oval of ice sitting in the center of all that darkness.

Once dry, string the lights: a loose curved line looped between two points above the rink, with small dots of warm yellow or white gouache spaced evenly along it, plus a few extra dots scattered along nearby building edges for a festive feel.

Skaters scatter across the pale ice oval as small bright dabs, red, mustard, pink, each just a comma-shaped stroke with a tiny head dot, placed at varied heights and angles so the rink feels genuinely busy rather than lined up.

If the lights look too stiff, draw the connecting curve freehand in one relaxed stroke before dotting the bulbs rather than measuring it out. For an easier variation, fewer skaters and a smaller rink still reads as a full scene on a phone screen.

You Will Need

• dark blue-violet for the night background
• white gouache or gel pen for lights
• small round for skaters
• fine liner for the light-string curve

Palette: Indigo,Ice Blue,Cadmium Red,Titanium White

Dot a few lights slightly larger than the rest and let them bleed just a touch at the edge while still wet, which reads as a soft glow rather than a hard point of white.

Snowy sand is an unusual combination, so mix a warm grey-beige rather than a pure white or blue for the beach itself, which keeps it reading as sand dusted with snow rather than a plain snowfield. Wash that across the lower third of the page, with a cool blue-grey sea and sky above.

Once dry, run a few loose dry-brush streaks across the beach in a slightly deeper tone to suggest texture where the snow is thinner, patchier near one edge, more solid near the other, which adds far more interest than a flat tone.

Dogs running are quick gestural marks: two or three simple leaping shapes, a curved back, two thin legs stretched front and back, in warm browns, tans or one bold red collar dab, scattered across the beach at different sizes for distance.

If the dogs look stiff, paint them fast, almost as a single continuous stroke per dog, lifting the brush as little as possible. A damp sponge dabbed lightly over the dry sand afterward can soften any patch that feels too hard-edged.

You Will Need

• warm beige and cool blue-grey paint
• dry brush for sand texture
• small round for the dogs
• damp sponge for softening edges

Palette: Warm Beige,Grey Blue,Burnt Sienna,Cadmium Red

Paint the dogs mid-leap rather than standing, since a stretched running pose instantly reads as joyful movement even in just two or three brush strokes.

What to Do Next

Pick whichever scene matches the mood you are in tonight, tape down a sheet of cold-press paper, and mix your sky wash big enough to cover the whole page in one go. The simplest ideas near the top of this list make a good warm-up if it has been a while since your last painting, and the rest are waiting whenever you want to build out a whole winter series.

Frequently Asked Questions

What watercolor paper works best for a loose winter landscape painting?

Cold-press paper at least 140 pounds works best, since it holds enough water for wet-into-wet skies without buckling. A paper block or taped-down sheet keeps the surface flat while the heavier washes dry.

How do you keep snow looking white in a winter landscape painting?

Leave the paper bare wherever snow needs to shine, rather than painting white on top. Plan those white shapes before you start the surrounding wash, since painted white always looks duller and chalkier than clean paper.

How small should the tiny figures be in these winter scenes?

Keep each figure to just a few brush dabs, one for the coat, one for the head, maybe a thin line for legs or a scarf. Figures that are over-detailed pull focus from the loose, painterly landscape around them.

What colors give this 1940s illustrator look its character?

Cool blues and violets across most of the painting, with small pops of red, mustard or pink kept almost entirely for the figures and lit windows. That contrast between a muted landscape and warm, saturated accents is what gives the style its print-like charm.

Can a beginner really finish a winter landscape painting in one sitting?

Yes, most of these scenes build from two or three big washes plus a handful of small dabbed figures, which keeps total painting time under an hour. Starting with the simpler ideas earlier in the list makes a finished piece even faster.
