31 White Pencil Drawing on Black Paper Ideas of Moths, Jellyfish and Moonlit Lakes

11

A white pencil drawing on black paper does something no sketch on white paper ever quite manages: the light seems to come from inside the picture instead of sitting on top of it. One pencil, one sheet of black paper, and suddenly moonlight, smoke and candle flame look like they are actually glowing.

Below are 31 subjects built for exactly that effect, from a single moth with powdery wings to a tent under the milky way. Pick whichever one catches your eye on the scroll, and you will have a finished page before the evening is out.

Start with a moth, since its wide flat wings are the easiest shape on this whole list to get right on the first try. Sketch two soft triangular wings and a small fuzzy body in light pressure white pencil, keeping the outline loose rather than hard-edged.

Build the wing pattern next: a few bands and dots of grey, then white dabbed on top with the side of the pencil tip to suggest powdery scales. If the wings start looking flat, smudge the grey slightly with a finger or blending stump before adding the brightest white dots last, so they sit on top and actually glow.

No white pencil handy yet? A white gel pen gives the same crisp highlight dots in a pinch. For more moth ideas once this one clicks, this moth drawing roundup has plenty of variations to try next.

Today’s tip: draw the two wings as mirrored halves of one shape, not two separate drawings, so they stay symmetrical.

Move from wings to something even softer: a jellyfish drifting with long trailing tentacles. Begin with the dome shape in light white outline, then let several long wavy lines drift down from its edge for the tentacles, spacing them unevenly so they feel like they are floating rather than lined up.

Shade the dome with soft circular strokes of grey, leaving one curved patch of pure white near the top as the highlight where light passes through the thinnest part of the body. Keep the tentacles lighter and thinner near their tips so they fade into the black paper instead of ending abruptly.

If your tentacles start looking stiff, loosen your wrist and redraw them with longer, slower strokes rather than short choppy ones. No white pencil on hand: a white charcoal pencil blends just as softly.

Vary it next time by drawing several jellyfish at different sizes drifting at different angles, as if seen through water.

After two floating creatures, ground the page with a landscape: a full moon over a still lake. Draw a clean circle for the moon using a coin or lid to trace it, then press hardest at its centre and let the pencil lighten slightly toward the edge so it looks lit rather than flat.

Here is where the eye level matters: place the moon fairly high and the horizon line low, so the water has room to carry a long reflected column of light straight down the page. Draw that reflection as a wobbly vertical stripe of white, broken by a few short horizontal dashes to suggest gentle ripples.

If the reflection reads as a solid bar instead of water, break it up with more gaps and uneven dashes. Swap a coin for tracing round the base of a glass if nothing else is handy.

Tip for today: keep the far shoreline as a simple dark silhouette so the moon and its reflection stay the brightest thing on the page.

You Will Need

• a coin, lid or glass to trace the moon

Switch from landscape to pattern with a piece of lace, which rewards patience more than skill. Lightly sketch the overall shape first, a scalloped edge or a simple square of fabric, then plan where the larger open holes sit before adding any fine detail.

Work the pattern in stages: draw the thicker connecting threads first in solid white, then the smaller looping motifs between them, and leave the actual holes as bare black paper rather than trying to shade them in. This negative space is what makes lace read as lace instead of a solid white shape.

If the pattern turns muddy, step back and simplify: draw fewer, larger holes rather than crowding in tiny ones you cannot keep neat. A fine white gel pen helps enormously here if your pencil tip is too soft for crisp lines.

Once this one works, try the same approach on a lace collar edge or a doily corner instead of a full square.

You Will Need

• fine white gel pen for crisp lace lines

Carry that same light touch into a dandelion clock with its seeds blowing away. Draw the round seed head first as a loose cluster of short straight lines radiating from a centre point, like a firework frozen mid-burst, rather than one solid circle.

Once the head is in, pull a handful of those lines further out and let them drift sideways, thinning as they go, to show seeds lifting away on the wind. Add tiny forked tips at the end of each line for the seed’s little parachute shape.

The usual trap here is making every line the same length and angle, which flattens the whole thing. Vary the lengths and let a few seeds clump together while others fly solo. If your pencil point keeps snapping on the fine lines, a mechanical white pencil or a sharp white colored pencil blender holds a point longer.

Try this one again later blown almost bare, with just two or three seeds left on the stem.

Bring in a warm light source next with a lantern lit on a dark path. Draw the lantern’s frame first in clean straight and curved lines, then decide where the flame sits inside it, because that decision controls everything else you draw afterward.

Light the glass panels from that one point: the glass closest to the flame gets the densest white, the panels further round the frame get only a soft grey glow, and the metal frame itself stays mostly bare black with just a few white edge highlights. Let a soft circle of light spill out onto the ground beneath it too.

If the glow looks too even all over, darken the frame bars more and push the brightest white into a smaller area right around the flame. No white pencil blender on hand: cotton bud works for softening the glow edges.

Ten minutes gets the lantern and its glow; forty minutes lets you add the dark path curving away and a few blurred trees either side.

You Will Need

• cotton bud for softening the glow

Keep that single light source idea going with a spider web lit by moonlight. Start with the structure: a few straight spokes radiating from a centre point, then connect them with a spiral of slightly wavy lines working outward ring by ring.

Since the moon sits off to one side here, let the threads on that side catch a brighter, thicker white line while the threads further into shadow stay thin and faint, almost disappearing into the black paper. A few small dots of white along the strands suggest dew catching the light.

Webs go wrong when every strand gets equal weight, which makes the whole thing look like a flat grid instead of light hitting a real object. Vary your pencil pressure strand by strand. If the spiral keeps drifting off centre, lightly mark four guide dots first with a dry stylus before inking in pencil.

Tip for today: leave two or three threads broken, since a slightly imperfect web always reads as more real than a perfect one.

Palette: Titanium White,Pale Grey

Trade the web’s spiral for a different kind of fine network with a leaf skeleton. Lightly sketch the overall leaf outline first, oval or pointed, then draw the central vein as one strong white line running its full length.

From that spine, branch out the secondary veins at a slight upward angle, then the finer tertiary veins connecting between them, working from thickest to thinnest the whole way. Leave the spaces between veins as bare black paper, since a leaf skeleton is really a drawing of absence as much as of line.

If the veins start looking like a tangle, slow down and keep every branch angling the same general direction off the spine, the way real leaf veins do. Swap in a fine white gel pen if your pencil line is too thick for the smallest veins.

Try this one next on a different leaf shape, like a maple leaf, where the veins branch from several points instead of one spine.

You Will Need

• fine white gel pen for the finest veins

Palette: Titanium White,Pale Grey

Narrow right in now on the smallest light source on this list: a single candle flame in the dark. Draw the flame shape first as a teardrop that leans very slightly, never perfectly upright, since real flames always waver a little.

Build the glow from the outside in: a wide, faint grey halo around the flame first, then a tighter ring of brighter white closer to the flame’s edge, and finally the flame itself left almost bare at its core where it burns hottest and the paper shows through brightest. Add the candle and a thin wisp of smoke above it once the glow feels right.

The flame usually goes wrong when it gets shaded evenly all over like a solid shape. Push contrast instead: darkest grey at the halo’s outer edge, brightest white right at the flame’s base. A blending stump smooths the halo faster than a finger if you have one.

Once this works, try two or three candles of different heights glowing together.

You Will Need

• blending stump

Palette: Titanium White,Pale Grey,Warm Cream

Lift the eye upward from a flame to a whole sky with a constellation over a mountain ridge. Draw the mountain ridge first as a simple jagged silhouette low across the page, left as flat solid black or just a touch of grey along its edge, since it needs to stay quiet under a busy sky.

Place the brightest stars of your chosen constellation first as small dots, then connect them faintly with thin straight lines, and only after that scatter the ordinary background stars around them at random, varying their size so a few feel closer and brighter than the rest.

Skies go flat when every star is the same size and evenly spaced. Cluster some, leave gaps elsewhere, and let two or three stars carry small radiating points like a sparkle. No ruler for the ridge line: tear a strip of paper and use its torn edge as a jagged guide instead.

Tip for today: keep the connecting lines between stars faint, almost a suggestion, rather than bold like a diagram.

Bring in the first night creature on this list with a white owl perched on a branch. Block in the body as one rounded egg shape first, then add the flat facial disc and two round eyes before any feather detail, since getting that basic proportion right now saves trouble later.

Layer the feathers in overlapping short strokes working from the head downward, pressing lightest on the chest where the owl catches the most light and darker in grey along the wing edges where shadow falls. The branch underneath can stay a simple dark shape with just a thin white rim light along its top edge.

Owls lose their shape fast if the feather strokes all point the same direction. Curve them to follow the body’s roundness instead, shorter near the head and longer down the wings. For more night bird subjects to try after this one, the bird pencil drawing list has plenty more starting points.

Next time, try the same owl mid turn, head swivelled almost backward.

Palette: Titanium White,Pale Grey

Move from a perched owl to a swan gliding on black water, a shape built almost entirely from one long curve. Draw the S-curve of the neck first, since the whole pose depends on getting that single line graceful rather than stiff, then build the rounded body beneath it.

Shade the body with soft white strokes following the direction feathers would lie, brightest along the top curve where light catches it and left bare black underneath where the body meets the water. A few short curved lines fanning out behind the swan on the black paper suggest its wake without needing much detail at all.

If the neck comes out looking broken or kinked, redraw it in one slow continuous stroke rather than several short ones joined together. Swap a pencil for a white china marker if you want a bolder, more confident line on the neck.

Try this one again with the swan’s wings half raised instead of folded flat.

Palette: Titanium White,Pale Grey

Settle back down to ground level with a cluster of glowing mushrooms on a forest floor. Draw three or four mushroom caps and stems at different heights first, overlapping slightly, rather than lining them up evenly in a row.

Light them from underneath, since bioluminescent mushrooms glow from within: keep the gills under each cap and the lower half of each stem brightest, fading to soft grey toward the top of the cap where the light has less reach. Scatter a few small glowing specks on the ground around their bases to suggest spores catching the same light.

If the mushrooms end up looking flat and pale all over, push the contrast harder between the glowing underside and the darker cap top. A white pencil with a slightly waxy core blends this gradient more easily than a dry chalky one.

Vary it next time by tucking the mushrooms at the base of a dark tree trunk instead of open ground.

Palette: Titanium White,Soft Green Grey,Pale Grey

Take on a portrait next with a woman’s profile lit from one side, a subject that rewards careful measuring more than confident lines. Lightly sketch the profile as a simple curved outline first, checking that the distance from forehead to nose roughly equals nose to chin before you commit to any shading.

Once the proportions sit right, decide which side faces the light and keep every highlight on that side only: the cheekbone, the bridge of the nose, the curve of the lips. Everything on the far side stays close to bare black paper, with maybe one faint grey line to hint at the jaw.

Profiles go wrong fastest when both sides get lit evenly, which flattens the whole face. Commit to one strong light side and trust the dark side to disappear. If measuring freehand feels shaky, hold your pencil up at arm’s length against a reference photo to check proportions before drawing.

Today’s tip: leave the hair as a soft loose shape rather than drawing every strand, so the face stays the focus.

Palette: Titanium White,Pale Grey,Warm Grey

Hold a reference photo at arm’s length and compare it to your sketch often rather than only at the end, it catches proportion drift early.

Carry that same soft lighting into fabric with a veil drifting on the wind. Start with the shape it makes as it lifts, a long loose curve rather than a straight sheet, since fabric caught in wind always billows unevenly rather than hanging flat.

Work the folds next, drawing each one as a pair of lines close together, bright white on the side catching light and a thin grey shadow line right beside it. Leave the thinnest, most translucent edges of the veil almost bare, just a faint grey suggestion, so it reads as sheer rather than solid cloth.

Veils stiffen up fast if every fold runs the same direction. Let a few twist and catch light differently from the rest. No white pencil for the softest translucent patches: a dry blending stump lifted straight from a heavier mark lightens it back down nicely.

Try this again later wrapped loosely around a figure instead of floating alone.

You Will Need

• blending stump

Narrow back down to something tiny with smoke curling from a blown-out match. Draw the matchstick itself quickly and simply, it only needs to anchor the page, then spend almost all your attention on the thin ribbon of smoke rising above the charred tip.

Build the smoke as one continuous wavering line that loops and thins as it rises, pressing hardest near the match where the smoke is densest and lightening the pencil touch steadily as it drifts upward and spreads apart into the dark.

Smoke turns into a solid grey blob fast if you shade it in rather than draw it as line. Keep it as a ribbon with visible gaps of black paper showing through, especially near the top. A kneaded eraser dabbed gently along the smoke’s edge softens any line that came out too hard.

Vary it next time with two matches, their smoke trails crossing each other partway up.

You Will Need

• kneaded eraser

Palette: Titanium White,Pale Grey

Head underwater again with a seahorse, whose curled tail makes it one of the more satisfying shapes on this list to get moving. Sketch the S-curve of the body first, from the downward curling tail up through the arched back to the long snout, before adding any surface detail.

Once that line sits well, work in the fine ridges that run along its back and belly as short curved marks following the body’s contour, pressing a touch harder along the top edge where light catches it and lighter where the body turns away into shadow. A few tiny dots down the snout suggest its bony plates without overworking them.

The curve usually stiffens if drawn in one go without checking it. Step back after the first light sketch and compare the curl against a reference before committing to ink-dark pencil pressure. Swap a kneaded eraser in for cleanup if the first curve needs softening and redrawing.

Try this one again drifting sideways instead of upright, tail still curled.

Palette: Titanium White,Pale Grey

Bring the scale back up with a waterfall in moonlight, a subject built almost entirely from vertical movement. Block in the rock ledges at the top and bottom first as simple dark shapes, then draw the falling water as a bundle of long, slightly wavering vertical lines rather than one flat white sheet.

Since the moon sits somewhere above and behind here, keep the lines brightest down the centre of the fall and let them fade toward grey at the outer edges where the water catches less direct light. Where the water hits the pool below, switch to short curved white marks instead of straight ones to show the splash breaking the surface.

Waterfalls flatten into a solid white block if every line runs the same length and thickness. Vary them, let some lines break and restart, and leave patches of bare black paper showing through the fall for a sense of spray and mist. A dry blending stump dragged lightly downward softens any line that reads too stiff.

Tip for today: keep the rocks at the base almost solid black, so the falling water stays the brightest thing in the picture.

Lighten the mood with a crescent moon holding a sleeping cat curled along its curve. Draw the crescent first using two overlapping circles as a guide, tracing only the sliver between them, then settle the cat’s curled silhouette into the lower curve of that sliver so it looks tucked in rather than balanced on top.

Keep the moon itself the brightest part of the page, solid even white across its curve, then shade the cat in softer grey so it reads clearly as a separate shape sitting against that glow. A few short whisker lines and one pointed ear are enough detail, since the pose matters more than the fur.

If the cat ends up looking stiff or straight, round its back more and tuck its paws further under its body, the way a cat actually curls when properly asleep. No compass or circles to trace: freehand the crescent slowly in short overlapping strokes instead of one long line.

Once this works, try a second small cat sitting upright beside the first.

Palette: Titanium White,Pale Grey

Give the page some motion with a dove in flight, caught mid wingbeat rather than gliding flat. Block in the body as a simple rounded teardrop first, then attach the wings at an angle, one raised and one lowered, to make the pose feel like a single frozen moment rather than a static silhouette.

Layer the wing feathers in overlapping rows working from the shoulder outward, keeping the longer flight feathers at the wingtip simple and few rather than drawn one by one, and press hardest along the leading edge of each wing where light would catch it mid-flap.

Doves flatten out if both wings are drawn at matching angles, which reads as symmetrical rather than mid-motion. Keep the angles clearly different from each other. If the feather rows start blending into mush, switch to a sharper pencil point for the outer wing edge only.

Vary it next time with two doves crossing paths in flight instead of one alone.

Palette: Titanium White,Pale Grey

Return to something slower and more detailed with a dewy rose in moonlight. Build the bloom from the centre outward: a tight spiral of small curved petals first, then progressively larger, looser petals working toward the outer edge, checking as you go that the outer petals are roughly twice the size of the innermost ones.

Light the whole flower from one side as before, keeping the petal edges on that side crisp white and letting the shadowed inner curls of each petal stay a soft grey. A handful of small bright dots scattered across the petals and down the stem, each with a tiny white comma beside it for the reflection, reads instantly as dew.

Roses collapse into a mess if too many petals get drawn before the overall curl of the bloom is settled. Keep checking the spiral shape as you add detail rather than only at the start. Swap in a white gel pen just for the dew highlight dots, since they need to sit crisp on top of everything else.

Today’s tip: leave a few outer petals slightly open and loose rather than tightly curled, so the rose looks freshly bloomed.

You Will Need

• white gel pen for dew highlights

Palette: Titanium White,Pale Grey,Soft Pink Grey

Pull back out to a wider view with a shooting star over rooftops. Draw a simple row of rooftop silhouettes low across the page first, varying their heights and a chimney or two, then leave the entire sky above them as open black paper until the rooftops feel settled.

Place the shooting star next, not in the dead centre but off to one side, with its brightest point at the head and a long tapering streak of white trailing behind that thins and breaks into smaller fading dashes rather than stopping cleanly. Scatter a few ordinary stars around it afterward so it clearly stands out against a normal sky.

The streak loses its sense of speed if it stays one even thickness end to end. Taper it hard toward the tail. No eraser shield for crisp rooftop edges: a scrap of paper held along the edge while you erase stray marks works just as well.

Try this one again with the star’s streak curving slightly rather than running dead straight.

Palette: Titanium White,Pale Grey

Bring in a second creature with a polar bear standing under the northern lights, a subject that leans on contrast more than detail. Block in the bear’s body low on the page first as a solid, slightly rounded shape, since its outline should read clearly against the busier sky above before any fur texture goes in.

Layer the fur in short, soft overlapping strokes following the direction it would naturally lie, brightest along the back and shoulders where the sky’s light would catch it and slightly greyer underneath. Then work the lights above in long, loose sweeping curves of pale grey and white, letting them overlap and fade into each other rather than drawing hard separate bands.

Fur turns into a flat grey smudge if the strokes are too short and too even. Vary their length, and leave tiny flicks of bare black paper between clumps for texture. Swap a blending stump for a finger if the aurora bands need softening without smearing the fur beneath.

Vary it next time with the bear seen from behind, walking away under the same sky.

You Will Need

• blending stump

Palette: Titanium White,Pale Grey,Soft Green Grey

Shrink the light source down again with a glass jar full of fireflies. Draw the jar’s outline first in clean simple lines, leaving most of its surface bare black paper except for a few curved highlight strokes along its edge to suggest glass catching light.

Place the fireflies inside next as small bright dots, each with a tiny soft halo of grey around it, clustering some near the bottom and a few drifting higher as if mid-flight, rather than spacing them in an even grid. One or two just outside the jar’s open lid suggest escape.

Jars of fireflies look flat if the glass gets drawn too solid all over. Keep most of the jar implied by its edges rather than filled in, so the glow inside stays the clear focus. No white gel pen for the tiniest glow dots: the sharpened tip of a white colored pencil, used almost upright, gives a similarly fine point.

Tip for today: let one firefly’s halo overlap the jar’s drawn edge slightly, since light does not respect outlines.

Palette: Titanium White,Pale Grey,Warm Cream

Bring the figure back in with a dancer in a flowing white dress, a pose built on balance before it is built on fabric. Sketch the body’s central line of action first, the long curve running from head through torso to the grounded foot, and check that it leans convincingly to one side before adding any dress at all.

Once the pose holds up, build the dress around it in sweeping curved strokes that follow the direction of movement, keeping the fabric closest to the body simple and letting it loosen and spread further out, exactly like the veil’s folds handled earlier in this list but shaped around motion instead of wind alone.

Dancers look frozen if the line of action is too straight or too centred. Lean it further than feels natural at first, then check it against a mirror or photo. If the fabric folds overwhelm the pose, simplify to fewer, larger folds rather than many small ones.

Try this one again mid-spin, with the dress fanned out flat to one side.

Palette: Titanium White,Pale Grey

Add some structure and sparkle with a chandelier hung with dripping crystals. Draw the main frame first, a simple curved or tiered shape, then plan where each strand of crystals will hang before drawing a single one, so they fall at varied lengths rather than all lining up evenly.

Draw the crystals themselves as small elongated diamond shapes, leaving one edge of each sharply bright white and the opposite edge in soft grey, since that single contrast is what makes a drawn crystal actually look like it is catching light rather than just hanging there as a flat shape.

Chandeliers lose their sparkle fast if every crystal gets the same even shading. Push a few brighter than the rest, as if catching more direct light, and let others sit almost grey and quiet. A white gel pen adds one sharp pinpoint highlight to the brightest crystals for extra sparkle.

Vary it next time by drawing just a single hanging strand of crystals rather than the whole fixture.

You Will Need

• white gel pen for crystal highlights

Palette: Titanium White,Pale Grey,Cool Blue Grey

Return to a flower with more open structure than the rose: a lily with long stamens. Draw the trumpet shape of each petal first as a simple curved wedge, three or six of them fanning outward from a central point, before adding any surface detail or the stamens themselves.

Light each petal from its base outward, keeping the inner throat of the flower brightest white and letting the petal tips fade to a softer grey at their curled edges. Then add the long stamens last, each a thin curving line ending in a small rounded anther, since drawing them after the petals keeps them floating cleanly in front rather than tangled into the petal shading.

Lilies flatten if every petal is shaded with the same even gradient. Vary which petal catches the brightest light depending on which way it curves. If a stamen line wobbles, a steady hand rest, like the side of your other hand propped on the page, helps keep it smooth.

Try this one again as a tighter, half-open bud instead of a full bloom.

Palette: Titanium White,Pale Grey

Bring a second animal in for a quieter moment with a deer looking up at the stars. Block in the body’s basic shape and the tilted angle of the head first, since the whole feeling of the piece rests on getting that upward gaze convincing before any fur or antler detail goes in.

Shade the body in soft overlapping strokes following the direction fur naturally grows along the neck and shoulders, keeping the back and ears brightest where starlight would catch them and the legs and lower belly left closer to bare black. Scatter a loose scattering of stars above, a touch denser directly where the deer is looking.

The gaze reads as wrong if the head angle is too level or too extreme. Aim for somewhere between the two, and check it against a mirror pose of your own head tilted upward. Swap a kneaded eraser in to lift soft highlights along the antlers if you add them, rather than drawing them in flat white.

Vary it next time with two deer, one looking up and one grazing.

You Will Need

• kneaded eraser

Palette: Titanium White,Pale Grey,Warm Grey

Widen out to the biggest sky on this list with the milky way over a little tent. Draw the tent small and simple in the lower third of the page first, a basic triangle shape with one guy rope, so there is no question the sky above it is the real subject.

Build the milky way as a soft diagonal band of texture rather than a hard-edged shape: light, dense clusters of tiny dots and short smudged strokes through the centre of the band, thinning out into looser scattered stars toward its edges, blended gently with a finger or stump so it reads as haze rather than a drawn stripe.

The band stiffens into a cartoon stripe if its edges stay crisp. Keep softening those edges until they dissolve into the ordinary stars around them. No blending stump: a dry cotton ball smooths the dot clusters just as well.

Tip for today: leave the tent almost entirely in silhouette, since a dark, simple shape against that much sky detail is what sells the scale.

You Will Need

• blending stump or cotton ball

Palette: Titanium White,Pale Grey,Soft Blue Grey

Slow everything right down with a single feather floating down slowly. Draw the central shaft first as one clean curved line, slightly bowed, then build the barbs outward from it in short, slightly uneven strokes angled consistently along its length rather than straight across.

Leave a loose, soft trail of a few small white flecks drifting upward from the feather’s tip, as if it is still settling through the air, and tilt the whole feather at a gentle diagonal rather than drawing it hanging perfectly straight down, since that tilt is what suggests it is actually falling rather than just floating still.

Feathers stiffen into a fish bone shape if every barb is drawn the exact same length and angle. Let them curve and vary slightly, especially near the tip where they thin out. If your pencil line keeps wobbling on the shaft, rest your drawing hand lightly on the page edge for more control.

Vary it next time by drawing two feathers crossing paths mid fall instead of one.

Palette: Titanium White,Pale Grey

Close the set with a white cat’s whiskered face emerging from the dark, a strong finish because it leans entirely on contrast. Block in the head shape and two triangular ears first, then place the eyes before any fur detail, since their spacing decides whether the whole face reads as convincing or slightly off.

Build the fur in short layered strokes radiating outward from the centre of the face, pressing hardest around the eyes and the bridge of the nose where light gathers, and letting the outer edges of the head fade gradually into the black paper rather than stopping at a hard outline. Add the whiskers last as a handful of long, confident single strokes, since too many crowded together reads as clutter rather than whiskers.

If the face looks flat, push more of the outer fur back toward bare black paper so only the centre glows. This cat pencil drawing list has more poses to try with the same soft fur technique, and the black cat drawing roundup makes a striking companion piece in reverse, dark fur on white paper.

Today’s tip: keep the whiskers slightly uneven in length and angle, never a perfect symmetrical fan.

What to Do Next

Pick one idea that caught your eye, the moth or the candle flame are the easiest places to start, and grab a sheet of black cardstock before the evening gets away from you. Keep the brightest white for just one small spot, and the glow will take care of the rest.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of pencil works best for white pencil drawing on black paper?

A soft wax-based white colored pencil works best, since it lays down opaque, bright marks on dark paper. Pair it with a pale grey pencil for shading and a white gel pen for the finest crisp highlights.

What paper should I use for white pencil drawing on black paper?

Use a heavier black cardstock or a black drawing paper pad made for colored pencil, around 150 gsm or heavier. Thin black paper buckles under layered white pencil and lets grey show through from the back.

How do I stop my white pencil drawing looking flat on black paper?

Leave patches of bare black paper showing through as your darkest shadow instead of filling the whole shape with pencil. Save the brightest, densest white for one small highlight area, which is what makes the rest glow by comparison.

Can I blend white colored pencil like I would on white paper?

Yes, a blending stump, cotton bud or even a clean finger softens white pencil marks on black paper the same way it does on white. Blend gently and build up layers slowly rather than pressing hard all at once.

Is white pencil drawing on black paper good for beginners?

Yes, it suits beginners well because working with one or two colours removes decisions about color mixing entirely. The main new skill is controlling pressure and contrast, which gets easier within a page or two of practice.
