31 Realistic Face Drawing Ideas of Every Angle, Age and Expression in Charcoal

7

Realistic face drawing gets so much easier once you stop hunting for the perfect photo and start practicing the pieces: an angle here, a light source there, an expression you have never tried. Charcoal pencil is the best tool for this because it moves from a whisper of tone to deep velvety black in a few strokes, and it forgives the smudges a graphite pencil never would.

Below are thirty one faces, one per drawing, running from gentle three-quarter lighting through to a reflection caught at an angle in a mirror. Work through them in any order, pick whichever face speaks to you today, and keep your paper, pencils and a blending stump close by.

Start with a woman’s face turned three-quarter to the light, since this angle teaches you more about the skull than a straight-on portrait ever will. Block in a light oval tilted slightly off center, then find the centerline curving around the far cheek before you place a single feature.

Measure the near eye against the far one: because of the turn, the far eye and eyebrow sit slightly narrower and closer to the centerline than beginners expect. Get that one proportion right and the whole face reads correctly even if the shading is rough.

Lay in the soft side light with a 2B charcoal pencil first, keeping the shadow side gentle and gradual rather than a hard line. Blend with a stump so the transition across the nose and cheek feels like falling light, not a stripe.

If the face looks flat, you likely skipped the halftone between the lit cheek and the shadow, so go back in with a light gray smudge before you darken anything further. Keep a kneaded eraser nearby to pull out soft highlights once the tone is built up.

A profile strips the face down to its outline, which makes it the perfect next study after a turned face. Choose a man with a strong jaw and sketch the profile line first in one continuous, unhurried stroke from forehead to chin.

Check the proportion before you shade: the ear usually sits roughly behind the midpoint between the front of the face and the back of the skull, and the jaw angle should echo the slope of the forehead above it. If the profile looks weak, the jawline is probably too shallow, so steepen that angle and the strength returns.

Shade the planes of the face as flat charcoal strokes first, following the direction each plane faces, then soften with a stump only where the light is already soft. Leave the jaw edge crisp and a touch darker to keep that strong, decisive line.

Try pressing harder along the jaw and brow with the side of the pencil tip for an instant, confident weight if the shading feels timid.

Move from a profile to a child’s face tilted up, since the upward angle changes almost everything you just learned about placement. Looking up means the eye level sits low on the page: the chin comes forward, the nostrils show more, and the brow recedes slightly above the eyes.

Start with a rounder oval than you used for the adults, since a child’s face is proportionally shorter from brow to chin, and the eyes sit lower on the head than most people assume. Keep the features soft and round rather than angular.

Shade lightly: children’s faces hold very little harsh shadow, so a light gray haze under the chin and around the eyes does most of the work, with the darkest charcoal saved only for the pupils and lash line.

If the wide eyes end up looking startled rather than curious, soften the lower lid with a stump and lighten the crease above it. A white gel pen can lift a tiny catchlight into each eye to finish the look.

From the smoothness of a child’s face, the jump to an old woman’s face teaches you to draw structure through texture. Block in the oval first, a touch longer and looser than a young face, then map where the deep smile lines run from the nose down past the mouth corners.

Build those lines gradually with a sharp 4B pencil rather than one heavy stroke; real skin folds have soft shadow on one side and a thin highlight catching the ridge, not a single dark groove.

Work the forehead and under-eye creases the same way, always following the direction the skin actually folds, which curves around the face rather than running straight.

If the lines start looking like scratches instead of soft folds, blend each one gently with a small stump immediately after drawing it. A short burst of ten minutes gets the basic lines in; a longer session lets you build the soft halftones around them that make the smile feel warm rather than carved.

Tilt things toward mood next with a teenage boy’s face angled down, his features sliding into shadow. A downward tilt pushes the brow forward over the eyes and drops the top of the head out of view, so sketch the skull a little compressed at the crown.

Think about where the light actually comes from before you shade: if it falls from above, the brow casts a shadow straight down over the eye sockets, which is what gives this pose its brooding, private feeling.

Block the big shadow shape first with the flat side of the charcoal stick or a soft pencil, then carve the eyes and nose back out of that darkness with a kneaded eraser rather than drawing them on top.

If the face reads muddy, you have probably lost the one lightest plane, usually the top of the cheekbone, so pull that back to near-white with the eraser before darkening anything else.

Palette: Charcoal Black,Deep Gray,Paper White

Flip the light source entirely for a face lit from below, which throws every shadow into territory you rarely draw: under the brow, under the nose, under the chin instead of above it.

Sketch the features in their usual places first and resist shading anything until the whole face is mapped, since under-lighting is easy to get backwards if you start shading too early.

Work from the chin upward: the underside of the chin and jaw catches the brightest light, the hollows of the cheeks and the sockets above the eyes go darkest, and the forehead often fades into shadow entirely.

If the result looks more confusing than dramatic, exaggerate the contrast a touch more than feels natural, since underlighting reads as eerie or theatrical only when the darks are genuinely deep. One strong dark under the brow sells the whole effect.

Try this one by torchlight or phone light held under your own chin in a mirror first, so you can study the shadow pattern before you commit it to paper.

Bring movement into the practice with a young woman laughing, her head tilted back. The tilted head shortens the visible neck and pushes the chin up and out, so block the jaw and chin shape before you touch the eyes.

Laughter opens the mouth wide and bunches the cheeks upward, which means the eyes often narrow into crescents rather than staying wide open: draw them half closed or you will lose the expression entirely.

Shade the throat and underside of the jaw with soft gray, since the tilted head exposes that plane to the light, then keep the open mouth mostly a soft dark shape rather than drawing individual teeth in detail.

If the laugh looks stiff, loosen the cheek lines with a quick smudge of the stump; genuine laughter blurs the sharp creases a posed smile keeps crisp.

Swing to the opposite mood with a man frowning, brow furrowed hard. The furrow lives in the small muscles between the eyebrows, so sketch two or three short vertical creases there before you touch anything else on the face.

Darken the inner corners of the brows where they pull down and together, using the sharp point of the pencil for these small, decisive marks rather than the broad side.

Shade the rest of the face more evenly than the brow, since a frown concentrates almost all its tension in that one small zone; overworking the mouth or cheeks will dilute the expression.

If the frown reads as sad instead of angry, lower the inner brow corners slightly more and keep the mouth a flat, pressed line rather than curved down at the corners. Ten minutes gets the brow and mouth right; a longer sitting lets you add the fine creases that make the anger feel lived-in.

Push the lighting further with a woman’s face half hidden in shadow, one side nearly lost to black. Draw the full oval lightly first so the proportions stay correct even though half of it will disappear.

Decide on a clean dividing line before shading, usually following the centerline of the face rather than a straight vertical, since faces are curved and the shadow should wrap with that curve.

Build the dark side with layers of charcoal rather than one heavy pass, letting a sliver of reflected light glow faintly along the jaw or cheekbone edge so the shadow side still reads as form, not a flat silhouette.

If the lit side looks too plain next to all that drama, add one soft shadow under the cheekbone or around the eye socket even on the bright half, since no real face is ever shaded with zero contrast at all.

Soften back down with a baby’s face caught mid-giggle, all round shapes and barely any shadow at all. Draw the head as a large rounded form with the features clustered low and close together, since infant faces have far more forehead than an adult’s.

Keep every line soft: a baby’s giggle creates small round cheeks and squeezed, almost closed eyes, with no sharp creases anywhere, only gentle rounded bulges.

Shade with the lightest touch of the pencil you can manage, barely more than a gray haze under the chin and around the eyes, since baby skin reflects light evenly with almost no deep shadow.

If the face looks too adult, the eyes are probably too narrow or too high; drop them a touch lower on the head and widen the cheeks, and the babyish proportion returns immediately.

Try a trickier angle next with a girl’s face looking back over her shoulder, which means you are drawing most of the back and side of the head with only a sliver of the face showing. Block the head and shoulder line first as simple shapes before placing a single feature.

Check the ear and eye placement against each other, since from this angle the visible eye sits noticeably closer to the far edge of the face than usual, and getting that spacing right is what sells the turned pose.

Shade the hair as one connected mass first, then let the exposed cheek and jaw catch the brightest light against it, since the contrast between soft dark hair and the pale face edge is what gives this pose its quiet, candid feeling.

If the whole thing looks twisted rather than turned, soften the neck line into a gentler curve; a sharp kink there is the most common reason this pose goes wrong.

Palette: Charcoal Black,Soft Gray,Paper White

Add facial hair into the mix with a bearded man’s face seen from slightly below. A low eye level makes the jaw and beard loom larger in the frame while the forehead recedes, so start the block-in with the jaw sitting lower and wider on the page than you might expect.

Draw the beard as one connected shape first, following the direction the hair actually grows rather than drawing individual strands, then carve texture back in with a sharp pencil point once the mass is in place.

Shade the visible skin, around the eyes and across the nose, before you fully darken the beard, since the contrast between smooth skin and rough beard texture is part of what makes this face convincing.

If the beard looks like a flat dark patch, drag a few lighter strokes through it with a kneaded eraser to suggest individual hairs catching light, concentrated where the beard would naturally be fullest.

Palette: Charcoal Black,Warm Gray,Paper White

Slow the pace with a woman’s face turned toward the light, eyes closed. This pose depends entirely on the light direction, so decide where it comes from before you draw a single feature; let it rake across the face from one side so the forehead, nose bridge and cheekbone each catch a clean highlight.

Draw closed eyes as soft, slightly curved lines with a little shadow pooling in the crease above, never as flat straight marks, since real closed eyelids have gentle volume.

Shade the face in long soft sweeps that follow the direction of the light rather than the shape of the features, which gives the whole drawing a calm, sun-warmed quality instead of a tense, searching one.

If the expression looks asleep rather than peacefully basking, lift the chin very slightly and soften the mouth into the faintest curve. A single warm highlight along the cheekbone finishes the feeling of real light.

Palette: Charcoal Black,Soft Gray,Paper White

Jump to high energy with a surprised face, brows raised and mouth open. Surprise lifts the eyebrows well above their resting position and widens the eyes so the white shows above the iris, which almost never happens in a calm face, so exaggerate that lift more than feels comfortable.

Draw the open mouth as a rounded oval shape rather than a flat gap, with a soft shadow inside rather than detailed teeth, since the shape alone reads as surprise from across a room.

Shade the forehead with a few short horizontal creases where the raised brows pull the skin upward, keeping them light and quick rather than heavy.

If the expression looks more frightened than surprised, relax the mouth corners slightly and keep the brows raised but not pulled together; surprise and fear share raised brows but differ in the mouth and brow angle.

Palette: Charcoal Black,Soft Gray,Paper White

Settle into something quieter with an old man’s face, cheeks sagging gently, gaze calm and steady. Draw the jawline a touch loose and rounded rather than sharp, since aging softens the jaw’s edge even on faces that were once angular.

Let the cheeks hang slightly below the cheekbone with a soft shadow marking where the skin folds, and keep the eyes small and a little heavy-lidded rather than wide, since a calm gaze rarely shows much white around the iris.

Shade slowly and evenly across the whole face, since this expression has no single dramatic shadow to chase; the feeling comes from the overall softness and the steadiness of the eyes rather than any one bold mark.

If the face starts to look sad rather than calm, lift the inner brow very slightly and soften the mouth corners upward just a touch; the difference between the two expressions is often only a millimeter of line.

For more on building convincing tone gradually across a whole face, this shading techniques guide covers the gradual buildup this kind of calm portrait depends on.

Add weather into the practice with a face in the rain, hair stuck wet to the cheeks. Draw the hair not as separate flyaway strands but as a few thick, flattened clumps that cling to the skin, since wet hair loses all its usual volume and texture.

Shade the skin with a slightly higher contrast than a dry face would need, since wet skin catches sharper, more mirror-like highlights along the cheekbone, nose bridge and chin.

Place a few small dark lines and dots where water drips off the jaw and brow, kept sparse rather than scattered everywhere, so they read as drops rather than noise.

If the hair looks dry no matter what you do, press the pencil harder along the clumped edges and smooth the inside of each clump flat with a stump; flatness, more than darkness, is what reads as wet.

Palette: Charcoal Black,Deep Gray,Paper White

Move into stronger emotion with a crying woman’s face, chin crumpled tight. The crumpled chin is the key to this expression: draw small bunched creases radiating across the chin rather than leaving it smooth, since that bunching is what the eye recognizes as crying before it even reads the tears.

Shade the lower eyelids heavier than usual and let the brows pull up and together in the middle, since combined with the chin this trio of marks carries almost the whole expression.

Keep tears simple: a thin curved highlight line down the cheek with a tiny pool of darker shadow where it gathers at the jaw is enough, rather than drawing every droplet in detail.

If the face looks angry instead of sad, soften the brow furrow slightly and keep the mouth corners pulled down rather than pressed flat; anger and sadness share a furrowed brow but differ most in the mouth.

Palette: Charcoal Black,Soft Gray,Paper White

Zoom in tight next with a crop running only from brow to lips, no chin, no hairline, no ears in the frame at all. Working this close means every small shape matters more, so measure the eye spacing and nose width carefully against each other before committing to ink-dark charcoal.

Build the skin tone in thin, overlapping layers with a soft pencil, since at this scale any single heavy mark reads as a flaw rather than a shadow, and layering gives you more control to correct as you go.

Let the composition run right off the edges of the paper on at least two sides, since a tight crop only feels intentional when the features genuinely spill past the frame rather than floating centered inside it.

If the close-up feels sterile, add one small imperfection, a slightly uneven brow or a faint line beside the mouth, since a crop this close demands the particular over the generic.

Palette: Charcoal Black,Warm Gray,Paper White

Bring back some looseness with a man yawning, eyes squeezed shut. A real yawn stretches the mouth into a tall oval rather than a wide one, so draw it taller than feels natural and let the jaw drop visibly lower than in any other expression on this list.

Squeeze the eyes into tight curved lines with small radiating creases at the outer corners, since a yawn closes the eyes harder than a simple blink or a peaceful closed-eye pose.

Shade the inside of the open mouth as one soft dark shape with a hint of the tongue, keeping teeth mostly implied rather than drawn tooth by tooth.

If the yawn looks like a scream, narrow the mouth oval slightly and relax the eyebrows downward rather than lifting them; a yawn pulls the face inward where fear pushes it outward.

Palette: Charcoal Black,Soft Gray,Paper White

Lighten the mood with a bored teenage girl puffing out her cheeks. Puffed cheeks round out past the natural cheekbone line, so draw that outer edge of the face slightly fuller than her actual bone structure, then tuck the real cheekbone shadow inside that fuller shape.

Draw the eyes half lidded and looking slightly off to one side rather than straight at the viewer, since that small detail carries most of the boredom in the expression.

Shade the puffed cheeks with a soft, even gray and a small highlight at the fullest point of the round, since puffed skin stretches smooth and catches light differently from a relaxed cheek.

If the puffed cheeks look swollen rather than playful, soften the edge where cheek meets jaw with a stump, and relax the eyebrows down rather than up.

Palette: Soft Gray,Charcoal Black,Paper White

Flip the eye level the other way with a face seen from above, chin tucked in close to the chest. Looking down from above compresses the face vertically: the forehead dominates the frame, the nose foreshortens dramatically, and the chin nearly disappears behind the lower lip.

Block this one in with care, checking that the eyes sit higher in the oval than usual and that the mouth and chin crowd together near the bottom edge of the face.

Shade the top of the head and forehead as the lightest, most exposed plane, then darken quickly as you move down past the brow, since from above the lower half of the face naturally falls into its own shadow.

If the foreshortened nose looks broken, simplify it to a soft triangular shadow shape rather than trying to draw nostrils and bridge separately; from this angle, less detail reads as more correct.

Palette: Charcoal Black,Deep Gray,Paper White

Work in a hand for the first time with a woman whispering, one hand raised beside her mouth. Draw the hand roughly the same length as the face from hairline to chin, since that rough proportion keeps the hand from coming out too small or too large beside the features.

Place the hand so the fingers partly cover the mouth and lower cheek rather than floating beside it, since the overlap is what makes the gesture read as a genuine whisper rather than a hand that happens to be nearby.

Shade the hand with the same light source as the face, letting it cast a small soft shadow onto the cheek it is close to, which ties the two shapes together convincingly.

If the hand looks stiff, loosen the finger joints into gentle curves rather than straight segments; the realistic hand guide on this site, 33 realistic hand drawing ideas, is worth a look before you tackle this one.

Palette: Charcoal Black,Soft Gray,Paper White

Add one small defining detail with a man’s face marked by a small scar across his eyebrow. Draw the face and brow fully first exactly as you would without the scar, since the mark only looks convincing sitting on top of correctly shaped features.

Place the scar as a thin pale line with a slightly darker edge on one side, since real scars interrupt the skin’s texture rather than sitting as a flat dark stroke; a kneaded eraser can lift a clean light line right through shaded skin.

Let the scar also break the eyebrow hair slightly where it crosses, a tiny gap in the brow strokes, since that small interruption sells the detail far more than the line itself.

If the scar looks drawn on rather than part of the skin, soften both its edges very slightly with a stump so it blends into the surrounding shading instead of floating on top of it.

Bring in texture of a different kind with a freckled boy squinting into bright sun. Squinting narrows the eyes to thin curved slits with small creases fanning out at the corners, so draw the eye shape closed down well before you add any freckles or shading.

Scatter the freckles with the sharp point of the pencil in small clusters across the nose and upper cheeks, denser toward the center of the nose and thinning out toward the ears, since real freckle patterns are never perfectly even.

Shade the squinting creases and the shadow under the brow first, then add freckles on top of the finished tone so they sit believably on the skin’s surface rather than floating above it.

If the freckles look like a rash instead of sun spots, vary their size slightly and leave small gaps of bare paper between clusters; real freckles are irregular, never a uniform grid.

Take on two faces at once with two sisters drawn side by side. Block both ovals in at the same time rather than finishing one face before starting the other, since working both together keeps their proportions consistent and genuinely related.

Give them matching bone structure, similar eye shape and nose width, but vary the expression or the angle slightly between them, since real siblings share structure while differing in small personal details.

Shade them under one consistent light source, which is the detail that most convincingly ties two separate faces into a single composed drawing rather than two unrelated studies placed next to each other.

If they end up looking identical instead of related, shift the tilt of one head slightly, or soften one jaw more than the other, since perfect symmetry between two people reads as a mistake, not a likeness.

Palette: Charcoal Black,Soft Gray,Paper White

Narrow back down to one subtle face with a woman wearing a wry half smile, just one corner of the mouth lifted. Draw the mouth asymmetrically on purpose: one corner turns up with a small crease beside it, while the other side stays flat and level.

Let one eyebrow sit very slightly higher than the other, since a wry expression almost always carries that same small asymmetry up into the brows, not just the mouth.

Shade the face evenly overall, keeping the contrast gentle, since this expression lives in small asymmetric details rather than in strong light or deep shadow.

If the smile looks like a smirk gone wrong, soften the raised corner’s crease slightly and keep the eyes relaxed rather than narrowed; a wry smile keeps the eyes calm while only the mouth plays along.

Palette: Charcoal Black,Soft Gray,Paper White

Build a small scene around one face with a grandfather resting his chin on his folded hands. Draw the hands and forearms first as simple blocked shapes beneath where the chin will rest, then fit the face down onto that support so the chin genuinely presses into the knuckles rather than floating above them.

Let the weight of the head show in the skin: a slight bulge where the chin presses down, and a soft shadow caught in the gap between fingers and jaw.

Shade the hands with a slightly different texture from the face, rougher and more angular at the knuckles, since the contrast between weathered hands and settled, calm features reinforces the sense of a long moment of rest.

If the composition feels cramped, leave a touch more white space around the hands at the bottom of the page rather than crowding them against the edge.

Palette: Charcoal Black,Warm Gray,Paper White

Strip away hair entirely with a woman who has a shaved head and high cheekbones. With no hair to frame the face, the skull’s own shape carries the whole drawing, so pay close attention to the curve from temple to crown and keep it smooth and continuous.

Shade the scalp with very light, even strokes that follow its curve, since a shaved head still catches a soft sheen of light along its highest point even though there is no hair to reflect it.

Emphasize the cheekbones with a firmer shadow just beneath them than you might use on a softer face, since with the head bare, the bone structure becomes the main visual interest of the whole piece.

If the scalp looks flat, add the faintest gradient from a slightly lighter crown to a slightly darker edge near the ear, since even a small gradient restores the sense of the skull’s rounded form.

Palette: Charcoal Black,Soft Gray,Paper White

Soften the mood for a sleeping face pressed into a pillow, cheek flattened against the fabric. Draw the pillow first as a few large soft folds, then let the cheek and jaw push slightly into those folds rather than resting cleanly on top of them.

Compress the cheek and lower eyelid very slightly where the face meets the pillow, since real skin flattens and bunches a little under its own weight when pressed against something soft.

Shade the pillow in loose, light strokes with soft folds of darker gray in the creases, keeping it noticeably less detailed than the face so the eye still goes straight to the sleeping expression.

If the face and pillow look like two separate drawings glued together, add one shared soft shadow where cheek meets fabric, blended with a stump so the two surfaces read as touching.

Palette: Soft Gray,Charcoal Black,Paper White

Bring back quiet tension with a young man biting his lip in thought. Draw the lower lip pulled slightly inward and up under the upper teeth, with a small dent where the teeth press into it, rather than drawing the lips in their normal resting shape.

Shade the eyes looking slightly off to one side and down, unfocused rather than fixed on anything in particular, since that small detail does most of the work in suggesting he is deep in thought.

Keep the rest of the face relaxed and evenly shaded, since the bitten lip is the single small gesture carrying the whole expression, and too much tension elsewhere will compete with it.

If the lip looks awkward rather than thoughtful, soften the edge of the bite with a stump so it looks like gentle pressure rather than a sharp pinch.

Palette: Charcoal Black,Soft Gray,Paper White

Finish with the most layered idea on this list: a face reflected at an angle in a mirror. Decide on the mirror’s edge and angle first, sketched as a simple frame or border, since the tilt of that frame determines how skewed and cropped the reflected face will look inside it.

Draw the reflected face itself exactly as you would any portrait at that angle, since the trick of this piece is mostly in the framing device around it, not in the face needing any special treatment.

Shade the mirror’s surface with a few subtle streaks or a slightly cooler gray than the skin tone, and let the reflection fade or soften very slightly at the mirror’s edges, since real reflections rarely stay perfectly crisp right to the frame.

If the whole piece looks confusing, add one small real object, a hand holding the mirror, or its edge resting against a windowsill, so the viewer’s eye understands instantly that they are looking at a reflection and not just a second face.

Palette: Charcoal Black,Cool Gray,Paper White

Once this one works, try reflecting the same face from a different angle or in a smaller hand mirror instead of a full frame, to see how the crop changes the mood.

What to Do Next

Pick one face from this list, the one that matches the mood you are in today, and set up with a sharpened charcoal pencil, a blending stump and a kneaded eraser within reach. Start every one of these with a light, loose block-in before you let the charcoal get dark, and you will finish a convincing face in a single sitting.

Frequently Asked Questions

What paper works best for realistic face drawing in charcoal pencil?

A smooth to lightly toothed white drawing paper works best, since it holds fine detail around the eyes and lips while still letting charcoal build up to a deep black in the shadows.

How do you keep charcoal pencil faces from smudging after they are finished?

Spray the finished drawing with a workable fixative in light, even coats, holding it well back from the paper, and avoid touching the surface directly until it has fully dried.

What is the biggest mistake beginners make drawing realistic faces in charcoal?

Shading too early before the proportions are checked is the most common mistake, since charcoal is harder to correct than pencil, so block in the whole face lightly first.

How do you get soft, smooth shading with charcoal pencil instead of harsh lines?

Build the tone gradually in thin layers and blend each layer with a stump or tissue before adding the next, rather than pressing hard for one dark pass straight away.

Do I need expensive charcoal pencils to draw realistic faces well?

A basic set covering soft, medium and hard grades is enough to start, since the real skill is in layering and blending, and even a modest set can produce fully convincing results.
