33 Beach Landscape Painting Ideas of Striped Umbrellas, Turquoise Coves and Dune Paths to the Sea

10

Beach landscape painting in gouache is the fastest way to get that flat, modern poster look: a few clean shapes, a crisp horizon, and a coastline that feels sunny even on a grey afternoon. You do not need to travel to paint it either, every cove, pier and dune path below comes from a mix of memory and imagination, built from simple blocks of color that a beginner can lay down with confidence.

Scroll through the 33 scenes here and pick whichever one matches your mood: a quiet lagoon from above, a row of striped umbrellas, a dog splashing through the shallows. Each one tells you exactly how to start, where it tends to go wrong, and how to fix it, so you can finish a painting in one sitting and still have time for a second.

Start with the row of striped umbrellas, the easiest scene here and a good warm up for flat gouache shapes. Lay a pale sandy beige across the lower two thirds of the page and a soft blue above it, then let both dry fully before adding anything on top.

Paint each umbrella as a simple triangle dome on a thin pole, spacing them evenly along one horizontal band so the row reads as a rhythm rather than scattered shapes. Alternate two colors per umbrella, coral and deep sea blue work well, and keep the stripes as straight flat bands rather than curved ones.

The usual snag is stripes that wobble because the brush follows the dome’s curve. Hold the brush at a shallower angle and pull short straight strokes instead of long curved ones, or switch to a fine liner brush for the stripe lines if your round brush keeps bending them.

If you only have one bright color, alternate it with plain white stripes instead of a second hue, the row still reads as cheerful and varied.

Move from a flat beach to a cove with some depth, since the cliffs on either side give this one real shape. Block in two tall cliff forms in a warm sandy brown on the left and right edges of the page, leaving a bright turquoise wedge of water between them.

Paint the water first as one flat turquoise shape, then drop a tiny white boat near the center once it is dry, just a curved hull and a thin mast. Keep the cliffs simple, solid shapes with one slightly darker shade along their base where they meet the water.

The size of the boat matters more than you might think: make it too big and the cove loses its scale. Compare the boat’s length to the gap between the cliffs, it should look small enough that the cove feels wide and calm around it.

If your paper is small, narrow the cliffs rather than shrinking the boat, so the water stays the hero of the painting.

After painting water, try a path instead: a sandy trail winding through dune grass down to the sea in the distance. Sketch a loose S curve with a pencil first, light enough to paint over, running from the bottom of the page up toward a narrow strip of sea near the top.

Fill the path itself with pale sand color, then build the grass on either side with quick upward flicks of a darker green, overlapping the path’s edge slightly so it looks like it grows right up to the sand. Finish with the thin blue sea strip and a lighter sky above it.

If the grass ends up looking like a solid green block, thin your paint slightly and vary the length and angle of each flick, some short and upright, some leaning. That variation is what reads as grass instead of a hedge.

No pencil to hand, block the path shape in cream gouache first and paint the grass around its edges instead of sketching the curve.

An empty beach with one pastel lifeguard tower is a quiet change of pace after a busy dune scene, and it leans on strong simple shapes rather than detail. Build the tower from basic geometry: a box cabin on stilts, a peaked roof, a short ladder up the front, all in one soft pastel color like mint or blush.

Paint the sand and sky first as two flat bands, then add the tower once they are dry so its edges stay crisp against the background. Keep the stilts thin and evenly spaced, this is the part that makes the tower look sturdy rather than wobbly.

Where eye level sits changes the whole mood here: paint the horizon low on the page and the tower looks grand and solitary, paint it higher and the scene feels more intimate, like you are standing close to the tower on the sand.

Today’s tip: pick one pastel for the tower and repeat a touch of it nowhere else in the painting, that restraint is what makes it the clear focal point.

Give the painting a strong diagonal with a leaning palm tree stretching out over clear shallow water. Paint the water first as a flat turquoise shape with a slightly paler band near the shore to suggest shallowness, then let it dry completely before the palm goes on top.

Build the trunk as one curved tapering shape leaning from one corner of the page, then add the fronds as five or six confident brush strokes fanning out from the top, each one a single pull of the brush rather than several short dabs.

Fronds often end up stiff and symmetrical, which flattens the lean of the whole tree. Vary their length and angle, and let two or three droop lower than the rest, that imbalance is what sells the tree as leaning rather than standing straight and tilted.

If your brush is too small for one confident frond stroke, load it fully with paint and go slower rather than switching to a bigger brush, the slow pull keeps the edge clean.

Waves are a subject in their own right once you treat them as shapes rather than texture. Paint the sea as a flat deep blue band, the wet sand as a paler strip beneath it, and the dry sand below that in warm beige, keeping all three perfectly flat and separate at first.

Add the curling white lines where the water meets the sand, painting each one as a loose C shape that gets thinner and more broken as it reaches up the beach. Two or three lines, each at a slightly different stage of rolling in, read better than a dozen identical ones.

For the texture of the foam edge, a dry brush with very little paint dragged lightly across the wet sand gives a broken, bubbly line far more convincingly than a solid painted stroke. Lift a little paint with a damp brush afterward if any line looks too solid.

This piece suits a quick ten minute version with just one wave line, or a fuller forty minute version with three overlapping lines at different stages up the sand.

Bring a figure into the scene with a girl in a sun hat walking the waterline, her sandals dangling from one hand. Paint the beach and sea as flat bands first, then add her as a simple silhouette: a rounded hat, a short dress shape, two thin legs, and bare feet touching the wet sand.

Work the figure small against the horizon rather than large and centered, a single confident shape no taller than a fifth of the page height usually feels right for a figure walking a long beach. Keep her pose simple, one leg forward, one arm slightly swinging with the sandals.

Measuring her against the umbrella or palm tree width if you have one nearby in the scene helps keep the scale honest, figures painted too large make a wide beach look like a narrow strip.

If figures feel tricky, start with just the hat and dress as two ovals and a triangle, then add limbs last, it is far easier to judge proportion once the main mass is there.

Palette: Coral,Sandy Beige,Deep Sea Blue,Soft Cream

Return to a row subject with pastel beach huts facing the sea, a scene that rewards neat repetition. Paint the sand and sky first, then build each hut as a simple box with a peaked roof, varying the pastel color of each one, mint, blush, pale yellow, soft blue, along the row.

Keep every hut the same size and evenly spaced so the row reads as orderly, then add one small dark door and a thin shadow line beneath each hut to ground it on the sand. Paint the row slightly smaller toward one edge of the page to suggest it receding away from the viewer.

If the huts start looking flat and identical despite the different colors, vary just one element, maybe the roof peak height or a slightly different door color, on one or two huts to break the monotony without losing the order of the row.

This idea pairs nicely with the quieter mood of Greece painting ideas if you want to keep the pastel coastal theme going in a second piece.

Palette: Blush Pink,Mint,Pale Yellow,Sandy Beige

Shift to a more dramatic coastline with a rocky headland and waves breaking white against its base. Paint the headland as one large dark rock shape jutting from one side of the page, keeping its outline angular rather than rounded, since sharp edges read as rock far better than soft curves.

Add the sea around it in deep blue, then paint the white spray where the waves hit the rock as a jagged, irregular shape rather than a smooth line, since real spray breaks unevenly against a hard edge.

Deciding where the light comes from changes how much of the rock you shade: if the light sits high and to one side, keep one whole face of the headland in flat dark color and leave the opposite edge a touch paler where the light catches it, that single contrast is enough to suggest form without blending.

Keep the spray shape smaller than you think it should be at first, it is easy to let the white spray take over the whole rock.

Palette: Charcoal Grey,Deep Sea Blue,White Gouache,Soft Cream

Follow the rocky coast with something calmer: a wooden pier stretching into a still sea at sunset. Start with the sky, blending soft bands of coral and warm cream from the horizon upward, then paint the sea as a flat, slightly darker reflection of that same warm color beneath it.

Add the pier last as a simple perspective shape, two converging lines of railings and a row of thin posts running from the bottom edge of the page out toward the horizon, getting smaller and closer together as they recede.

The posts are where this painting usually goes wrong, spaced too evenly they look mechanical. Space the nearest ones further apart and let the gaps shrink gradually as the pier moves into the distance, which is how real perspective behaves.

No two matching colors for the sky gradient, just paint the whole sky one warm coral and add the cream only along the very top edge where it meets a cooler blue.

Palette: Coral,Soft Cream,Brown Ochre,Deep Sea Blue

Add energy with a surfer carrying a board toward big blue waves. Paint the sea and sky as flat bands first, with the waves as bold curved shapes further out, then build the surfer as a simple standing silhouette with the board tucked under one arm, angled slightly as if mid stride.

Keep the board as one long narrow oval shape and the figure proportionally small against the waves behind, this contrast in scale is what makes the waves look genuinely big.

For a quick ten minute version, paint just the surfer and a single wave shape behind. The forty minute version adds a second, smaller wave further back and a scatter of white foam along both, giving the water more depth and movement.

If the figure looks stiff, tilt the board very slightly off the vertical and bend one knee a touch in the silhouette, small adjustments like that suggest walking rather than standing still.

Palette: Deep Sea Blue,Turquoise,Charcoal Grey,White Gouache

Keep the energy going with a dog running through shallow water on a wide beach. Paint the beach and sea as flat bands first, then add the dog as a simple running silhouette, body stretched long and low, legs splayed to suggest speed, tail out behind.

Add a few splash marks around its paws with small white dashes, kept close to the ground rather than scattered high, since a running dog kicks water sideways more than upward.

Getting the running pose right is mostly about the legs: two should reach forward and two should trail back, never all four in the same position, or the dog reads as standing rather than moving.

If you are unsure of dog anatomy, simplify to an oval body, a rounded head, and four thin straight legs rather than trying to add joints, the flat gouache style forgives a simplified shape as long as the running angle is clear.

Palette: Sandy Beige,Deep Sea Blue,Brown Ochre,White Gouache

Settle into something still with a sailboat anchored off a white sand beach. Paint the beach as a bright, almost white sand shape, the sea as a flat turquoise band around it, then add the boat as a simple hull with one or two triangular sails, kept small against the open water.

Let the boat’s reflection sit just beneath it as a thin, slightly wavy mirror shape in a darker shade of the same turquoise, this single touch does more to anchor the boat in the water than any amount of extra detail.

Painting such pale sand next to white sails can lose all contrast, so keep the sand very slightly warmer and darker than the sails, even a faint difference reads clearly once both are dry.

If the boat’s straight mast keeps wobbling, paint it with the edge of a ruler held just above the paper as a guide rather than freehand.

Palette: White Gouache,Turquoise,Sandy Beige,Deep Sea Blue

Slow the pace right down with two wooden deck chairs facing a calm sea, side by side and empty. Paint the sand and sea as flat bands, then build each chair from simple straight lines, two crossed legs, a seat, and a striped canvas back in a color that echoes the umbrellas earlier in this list.

Keep both chairs the same size and angle so they read as a pair, then add one soft shadow beneath each, angled the same direction, to settle them onto the sand rather than letting them float.

The stripes on the canvas seat are the fiddly part, since a curved seat back bends every stripe slightly. Paint the stripes as straight lines first and only curve them gently at the very top edge where the fabric folds over the frame.

Swap the striped canvas for a single flat color if stripes feel too fiddly today, the pair of empty chairs carries the quiet mood on its own.

Palette: Brown Ochre,Coral,Sandy Beige,Deep Sea Blue

Try a more unusual palette with a black sand beach and tall sea stacks rising out of misty water. Paint the sand as a flat, deep charcoal black, a striking change from the pale beaches earlier in this list, then add two or three tall narrow sea stacks standing in the water, each a simple rounded column shape.

Build the mist around the stacks with a very thin wash of pale grey white, dragged loosely across the horizon so the furthest stack fades more than the nearest one. This fading is what gives the scene real distance.

Black sand can flatten the whole composition if every other shape is also dark, so keep the sky and mist pale and let the black sand and dark stacks be the only deep tones in the piece, that contrast is what makes it read clearly.

No charcoal grey in your set, mix a deep sea blue with a touch of brown to get a similar near black that still has some warmth.

Palette: Charcoal Black,Pale Grey,Deep Sea Blue,Soft Cream

Bring back some warmth with two kids building a sandcastle, buckets and spades scattered beside them. Paint the beach first, then build the sandcastle as a cluster of simple geometric towers, a few cylinders and cones in a slightly deeper sand tone than the beach around them, so it stands out clearly.

Add the two children as small rounded silhouettes crouched close to the castle, one with an arm reaching toward a bucket, the other patting a tower, keeping both figures roughly the same height to read as a pair of kids.

The castle towers are easy to make lopsided, so paint them in a quick row first, lightest to tallest, before adding any flags or detail, correcting proportions is much easier while the shapes are still simple blocks.

If flags feel fussy at this size, leave the towers plain, the cluster of shapes alone reads clearly as a sandcastle.

Palette: Sandy Beige,Brown Ochre,Coral,Deep Sea Blue

Return to an unusual color story with a pink sand beach meeting bright turquoise water. Paint the sand as a flat, warm dusty pink, a strong contrast to the black sand beach earlier, then add the turquoise water in a band above it, keeping the line between the two perfectly crisp and horizontal.

Add a thin line of slightly darker pink along the waterline to suggest the wet sand, and a few pale coral flecks scattered across the dry sand to hint at real shell and coral fragments without painting each one individually.

Pink and turquoise sitting right next to each other can vibrate uncomfortably if both are too saturated, so keep one of the two slightly softer: either mute the pink toward beige or let the turquoise lean a touch more green.

If pink gouache runs thin and patchy, add a touch of white to thicken the mix rather than adding more water, that keeps the flat color solid.

Palette: Dusty Pink,Turquoise,Coral,White Gouache

Zoom in close for a change with a trail of seashells along wet sand leading the eye down to the sea. Paint the wet sand as a flat, slightly darker beige strip filling most of the page, with a thin sliver of blue sea along the top edge.

Scatter five or six shells along a loose diagonal line leading from one corner toward the sea, varying their shapes, a spiral, a fan, a simple oval, each painted as a small flat shape with one or two curved lines for detail rather than full shading.

Keep the shells roughly similar in size unless one is clearly meant to be further away, since shells of wildly different sizes scattered randomly can look like an odd collage rather than a natural trail.

No reference shells handy, base the shapes on a scallop, a spiral snail shell and a simple clam, three shapes most readers will recognize instantly.

Palette: Wet Sand Beige,Deep Sea Blue,White Gouache,Coral

Add some structure with a thatched beach bar, tall stools lined up facing the waves. Build the bar as a simple open sided hut, a flat wooden counter, two or three thin support posts, and a thatched roof painted as a dense cluster of short diagonal strokes rather than one flat triangle.

Add a row of tall stools along the counter, simple thin legs and round seats, evenly spaced and facing out toward the sea rather than toward the viewer, which helps the whole scene feel like it is looking at the water with you.

The thatch texture is the trickiest part: too few strokes looks sparse, too many looks muddy. Load the brush once and lay down a dense patch of short strokes in one go, then stop, resisting the urge to keep adding more once the shape reads as thatch.

If a textured roof feels like too much today, paint it as a flat warm brown triangle instead and let the stools and counter carry the scene.

Palette: Brown Ochre,Sandy Beige,Deep Sea Blue,White Gouache

Move to a calmer, more open scene with a row of overwater bungalows on a still lagoon. Paint the lagoon as a wide flat turquoise shape filling most of the lower page, then add the bungalows as simple repeated boxes on stilts, connected by a thin straight walkway running along the row.

Keep every bungalow roughly the same size and shape, varying only the roof color slightly, and let their reflections sit directly beneath them as softer, slightly blurred mirror shapes in the water.

From this eye level, looking almost straight across the water, the walkway should stay close to horizontal rather than angling sharply, which keeps the whole row feeling calm and distant rather than looming toward the viewer.

If painting several identical reflections feels repetitive, paint one confident reflection under the nearest bungalow and let the rest fade into a soft turquoise blur, which actually reads as more realistic water.

Palette: Turquoise,Brown Ochre,Sandy Beige,Deep Sea Blue

Climb up above the water with a coastal path winding along cliffs, wildflowers scattered through the grass. Paint the sea far below as a thin blue strip, then build the cliff and grassy clifftop above it as one large green and sandy shape taking up most of the page, with the path cutting a pale curve through the middle.

Scatter small dots of color, pale yellow, white, a touch of coral, loosely through the grass near the path to suggest wildflowers, keeping them as simple dabs rather than detailed petals.

Because the path curves away and down toward the sea, make it slightly narrower and paler as it recedes into the distance, the same trick as the dune path earlier in this list but applied to a cliff instead of flat ground.

If dabbing flowers feels fiddly with a round brush, try the end of a cotton swab or the back of the brush handle dipped in paint for quick, even dots.

Palette: Sea Green,Sandy Beige,Deep Sea Blue,Pale Yellow

Bring in a working boat with a fishing boat pulled up on the sand, nets coiled beside it. Paint the beach and sea in flat bands, then build the boat as a simple curved hull shape resting at a slight tilt in the sand, with a short mast or a few upright poles if you want extra height.

Add the nets beside the boat as a loose tangle of curved overlapping lines in a muted rope color, kept to a compact pile rather than spreading them across the whole beach, which keeps the composition focused on the boat.

Resting on sand rather than floating, the boat’s hull should sit with a flatter, more settled curve along the bottom and a small shadow pooling beneath it, that shadow is what grounds it convincingly on the beach instead of making it look like it is floating on sand.

If the net tangle looks too stiff, loosen your wrist and let the lines cross at slightly different angles rather than planning each curve, real rope rarely lies in a tidy pattern.

Palette: Brown Ochre,Sandy Beige,Deep Sea Blue,Charcoal Grey

Shift the light with a beach at sunrise, one jogger casting a long shadow across the sand. Paint the sky in soft warm bands, pale coral low near the horizon rising into cream, then the sea as a flat reflection of that same warm light, calmer and slightly darker in tone.

Add the jogger as a small silhouette mid stride, then paint their shadow stretching long across the sand in the opposite direction from the light source, since low morning sun throws shadows much longer than midday light does.

Getting the shadow’s length and angle right does more for the sunrise feeling than the sky color does, so sketch the shadow first as a long thin triangle from the jogger’s feet before committing it in paint, adjusting the angle until it feels convincingly low and early.

If a full gradient sky feels tricky, paint it as two flat bands, coral below and cream above, with a soft edge blended only where they meet.

Palette: Coral,Soft Cream,Sandy Beige,Charcoal Grey

Get in close again with a seaside rock pool, waves just starting to splash over its edge. Paint a cluster of dark rocks in an uneven ring, leaving a clear turquoise pool in the center, then add a wave shape rolling in from one side with a thin white line of spray splashing over the lowest point of the rocks.

Keep the rocks varied in size and angle rather than evenly spaced, real rock pools form from whatever rocks happen to sit together, and that irregularity is part of what makes the shape convincing.

For the texture of the splash where water meets rock, try lifting a touch of wet paint with a clean damp brush right at the point of impact, which leaves a soft pale edge that reads as spray far better than a hard painted line.

If your rocks look too uniform in color, mix two slightly different greys and alternate them around the ring, that small variation adds a lot of believability.

Palette: Charcoal Grey,Turquoise,Deep Sea Blue,White Gouache

Go bigger and rounder with a beach made of giant granite boulders sitting in clear shallow water. Paint the water as a pale, almost transparent turquoise, letting a hint of the sandy color beneath show through slightly, then add two or three enormous rounded boulders rising out of it, each a simple smooth oval shape.

Keep the boulders’ outlines soft and rounded rather than angular, which is what separates granite boulders from the sharper rocky headland painted earlier, and add one flat shadow side to each so they read as solid and three dimensional despite the flat color.

Comparing the boulders to a small figure or boat if you add one nearby helps keep their huge scale believable, these rocks are meant to dwarf anything beside them.

If flat shading feels too subtle to show their roundness, add a thin highlight line of white along the top curve of each boulder instead, that single line does a lot of the work.

Palette: Charcoal Grey,Turquoise,Sandy Beige,White Gouache

Bring the energy back with a kite surfer skimming fast across bright turquoise water, a bold kite arcing above. Paint the water as a flat, saturated turquoise with a few white wave streaks following the direction of movement, then add the surfer as a small, low silhouette leaning back against the pull of the kite.

Connect the surfer to the kite with thin, slightly curved lines rather than perfectly straight ones, since real kite lines sag a little under their own tension, and that small curve makes the connection look natural.

Keep the kite itself a bold simple shape, a curved crescent or a triangle with one bright color, positioned well above and ahead of the surfer to suggest real forward motion and speed.

If the lines keep smudging as you paint the kite above them, paint the kite first while the lines are still just a light pencil guide, then add the lines last in one confident stroke each.

Palette: Turquoise,Coral,Charcoal Grey,White Gouache

Add a playful moment with a little girl chasing a small group of seagulls across the sand. Paint the beach in a flat band first, then add the girl as a simple running silhouette, arms raised slightly, and the seagulls ahead of her as a handful of small V shapes caught mid flight, lifting off the sand.

Keep the birds to three or four at most, spaced a little apart rather than clustered, which reads more like they are scattering away from her than sitting in a tidy group.

Her running pose carries most of the story here, so lean her whole body slightly forward and raise her front leg higher than her back one, that single adjustment makes the chase feel active rather than static.

If painting birds mid flight feels fiddly at this small size, simplify each one to a single curved line like a shallow M, that shorthand reads instantly as a gull in flight.

Palette: Sandy Beige,Coral,White Gouache,Deep Sea Blue

Change the viewpoint entirely with a lagoon seen from directly above, sandbars curling through it in soft swirls. Paint the water as a mix of turquoise tones, darker where it is deeper and paler over the sandbars, letting the colors blend softly into each other rather than staying in hard flat blocks, since this aerial view reads better with some gentle gradation.

Shape the sandbars as loose curving bands weaving through the water, more like ribbons than straight lines, and let one or two taper to a point as they would naturally thin out underwater.

Looking straight down removes the horizon and the usual sense of sky and distance, so the whole composition rests on the shapes and color gradients alone, which makes this a good chance to loosen up your brushwork more than usual.

If blending gouache smoothly feels difficult, work on damp paper so the colors spread and merge on their own rather than needing to be blended by hand.

Palette: Deep Sea Blue,Turquoise,Pale Turquoise,Sandy Beige

Try this one on slightly damp paper so the turquoise tones bleed softly into each other, giving the water a more natural aerial gradient than flat blocks allow.

Return to a path subject with a wooden boardwalk crossing over the dunes toward the beach beyond. Paint the dunes and grass first as a soft sandy green mass filling the middle of the page, then add the boardwalk as a straight row of evenly spaced wooden planks running from the bottom edge out toward a glimpse of sea near the top.

Keep the planks’ perspective simple: slightly wider at the bottom of the page and narrowing gradually as the boardwalk recedes, with a thin rail on either side following the same converging lines.

For a quick ten minute version, paint the boardwalk as a flat pale strip with just a few plank lines near the front. The forty minute version adds full plank detail throughout and a scattering of dune grass pushing up through the rail posts.

If straight converging lines feel hard to judge by eye, lightly mark the vanishing point in pencil first where the boardwalk meets the sea, then draw every rail and plank edge toward that single point.

Palette: Sandy Beige,Sea Green,Brown Ochre,Deep Sea Blue

Add some architecture with an old beach house, its wraparound porch facing the sea. Build the house as a simple boxy shape with a peaked roof, then wrap a long thin porch with a railing and a few support posts around the front and side, keeping the posts evenly spaced like the lifeguard tower earlier in this list.

Paint the sea and sky behind the house as calm flat bands, then add a small awning or a couple of porch chairs as optional details once the main structure is dry, keeping everything else loose so these small touches stand out.

Since the porch wraps around a corner of the house, the two visible sides sit at an angle to each other, keep that angle consistent between the roofline, the porch railing, and the base of the house, or the whole structure will look as though it is leaning.

If drawing the angled corner freehand feels tricky, lightly sketch the two wall edges as a simple V first, then build the roof and porch lines parallel to each side of that V.

Palette: Soft Cream,Deep Sea Blue,Brown Ochre,Sandy Beige

Slow right down with a still life moment: a beach towel laid on the sand with a sun hat and a book resting on top. Paint the sand as a flat background first, then add the towel as a simple rectangle with a few bold stripes, keeping the stripes straight and even since the towel lies flat with no curves to distort them.

Add the hat as a flattened oval with a thin brim shadow, and the book as a simple closed rectangle with a thin line for the pages, placing both so they overlap the towel’s edge slightly rather than floating separately above it.

This is one of the simpler scenes in this list, so it is a good one to pair with easy gouache sea painting ideas if you want a calmer second piece after a busier subject.

If a patterned towel feels fussy, keep it to just two colors in wide stripes, that reads as clearly as a more detailed pattern at this scale.

Palette: Coral,Soft Cream,Sandy Beige,Deep Sea Blue

Bring in a quieter animal moment with a sea turtle crawling across the sand toward the waves at dawn. Paint the sky and sea first in soft early light tones, then add the turtle as a simple rounded shell shape with four short flipper legs and a small head, kept low and close to the sand to suggest its slow determined crawl.

Add a short track of flipper marks behind it in the sand, two parallel rows of small dashes, which does a lot to suggest motion and direction without needing the turtle itself to look dynamic.

Keep the shell pattern simple, three or four soft segment lines rather than a detailed scale pattern, since too much detail at this size can make the shell look busy instead of solid.

If the flipper marks look too neat, stagger them slightly and vary their spacing, a real trail rarely stays perfectly even.

Palette: Sea Green,Sandy Beige,Coral,Soft Cream

Close the list with a calm, classic moment: a couple walking hand in hand along the beach at sunset. Paint the sky in warm gradient bands first, then the sea as a flat, slightly darker reflection of that same warmth, before adding the two figures as simple silhouettes close together, one arm linking between them.

Keep both figures a similar height and give them a shared rhythm in their stance, both leaning slightly forward, both with one foot ahead of the other, so the pair reads as walking together rather than standing apart.

Varying this scene next time, try swapping the warm sunset for a cooler blue twilight, or move the couple from the center of the page toward one side with more empty beach stretching out ahead of them, which changes the whole feel from cosy to contemplative.

If two linked figures feel hard to balance, paint them as one slightly wider combined silhouette first, then separate the two heads and the gap between their bodies last.

Palette: Coral,Soft Cream,Deep Sea Blue,Charcoal Grey

What to Do Next

Pick whichever beach speaks to you today, maybe the striped umbrellas if you want something quick, or the overwater bungalows if you have a full afternoon free, and set up on a page of cold press watercolor paper with your sand, sea and accent colors mixed before you start. Once the flat shapes feel comfortable, the whole list becomes a fast way to fill a sketchbook with coastlines from everywhere at once.

Frequently Asked Questions

What gouache colors do you need for beach landscape painting?

A small set covering turquoise, sandy beige, coral, deep sea blue and white gouache covers nearly every scene in this list, since most beaches repeat these same core tones in different combinations.

How do you keep gouache edges crisp in a beach painting?

Let each flat shape dry fully before painting the next one beside or on top of it. Working wet into wet is what blurs edges, so patience between layers matters more than brush skill here.

Do I need to draw a pencil sketch first for these beach scenes?

A light pencil guide helps with tricky shapes like piers, boats or figures, but most flat sand and sea bands can go straight on with a brush once you have blocked out the horizon line.

How small should figures and boats be in a beach landscape painting?

Keep figures and boats noticeably smaller than the main shapes around them, usually under a fifth of the page height, since an oversized figure makes the whole beach look cramped and narrow.

What is the easiest beach scene to start with in gouache?

A row of striped umbrellas on a flat beach is the simplest start, since it only needs two flat background bands and a few repeated triangle and stripe shapes to finish.
