Christmas market illustration is at its best when you forget the whole square and paint one small corner of it instead: a single stall, a pair of hands, a glow of lantern light. That close-up habit is what gives these gouache scenes their warmth, and it is also what makes them finishable, because you are never fighting a crowd of tiny figures or a street full of detail.
Below you will find 29 small market moments, from a shelf of glass ornaments to a wreath maker tying fir branches, each one built around flat shapes, crisp edges and a cozy palette of red, pine green, mustard gold and cream. Work through them in any order, pick whichever stall calls to you first, and keep the brush loaded: this is a style that rewards confidence more than fuss.
Using these images: free for personal projects such as printing, coloring, cards, journals and gifts. Handmade items that include them may be sold up to 30 pieces per design. More than that is commercial use and is not permitted, and neither is selling or sharing the images themselves or passing them off as your own. Please ask before any other use.
Glass ornament stalls make a forgiving first subject because every bauble is just a circle, and a row of circles reads instantly as a stall of hanging ornaments. Sketch a simple wooden frame or shelf in pencil first, then rough in a scatter of ovals and circles at different sizes, leaving gaps between them so each one keeps its own light.
Paint the shelf and frame in a flat mustard gold first, then block in each ornament with solid color: poinsettia red, pine green, plum, letting a few stay cream. Once dry, drop a small white gouache highlight onto the upper left of each one with the tip of a round brush, in the same spot every time, so the whole stall catches light from one direction.
The common mistake here is making every ornament the same size and spacing, which flattens the scene. Vary the sizes and let two or three overlap slightly in front of the others.
If you do not have plum, swap in a deep maroon mixed from red and a touch of black for the same richness.
Palette: Poinsettia Red,Pine Green,Mustard Gold,Plum,Cream
Keep a small jar of pure white gouache mixed thick and slightly dry so the highlight dots sit on top as a crisp spot rather than sinking into the still-wet base color.
From one glowing shelf to another: a candle stall of beeswax tapers and pillar candles gives you tall thin shapes next to short wide ones, a nice contrast after all those circles. Draw a simple wooden table or crate first, then a row of upright tapers behind a cluster of fatter pillar candles in front, varying their heights so the silhouette has rhythm.
Paint the tapers in mustard gold and the pillars in cream, then add a soft orange glow around each flame with a nearly dry brush, patting rather than stroking so the color stays cloudy instead of streaky. Finish each wick with a tiny dark dot and a dash of white gouache for the flame itself.
The glow is where this goes wrong: too much orange around every candle turns the whole stall muddy. Keep it to a gentle halo around two or three candles and leave the rest simply lit from the flame dot.
No mustard gold on hand means raw sienna mixed with a touch of yellow will do the same warm job.
Palette: Mustard Gold,Cream,Pine Green,Poinsettia Red
Decorated heart cookies hung in rows are simply a heart shape repeated with confidence, which makes this a quick one to finish. Pencil a grid of loose heart outlines on a ribbon or stick, slightly uneven in size, then paint the base of each cookie in warm mustard gold to read as gingerbread.
Leave every heart blank in the center, as the market stalls often do before a name goes on, and instead paint a plain border of icing dots or a scalloped edge in cream around each one. A few hearts can take a small red or green icing swirl in the corner for variety.
If the icing dots come out blobby, a fine round brush loaded lightly and dabbed rather than dragged keeps them crisp. Hang the row from a simple ribbon line at the top so the hearts feel strung rather than floating.
Swap the cream icing for white gel pen once the paint is fully dry if you want a sharper line.
You Will Need
- white gel pen

Move from a stall to a small human moment: a child on her father’s shoulders reaching up toward a star lantern. Start with two simple figures, the father’s body as a tall rounded triangle and the child as a smaller rounded shape perched on top, arm stretched upward in a clean diagonal line.
Check proportion before you paint: the child’s head should sit roughly level with or just above the father’s, and her reaching arm should be about the same length as her own torso, not longer. Block in coats in pine green and plum, faces as simple pale ovals, then add the star lantern above her hand in mustard gold with a soft cream glow around its points.
Where this tends to go wrong is the reach itself looking stiff. Angle the child’s whole body slightly toward the lantern, not just the arm, so the gesture feels natural.
If you want the lantern to feel more central, make it slightly larger than realistic, since scale reads as importance in a flat illustration style.
Palette: Pine Green,Plum,Mustard Gold,Cream
A wooden toy stall lined with nutcrackers in red coats is a good one for practicing a repeated figure with small variations. Pencil a row of tall narrow rectangles for the bodies, each topped with a round head and a tall black hat, then let their widths and heights vary slightly so the row does not look stamped from one mold.
Paint every coat in poinsettia red with mustard gold buttons down the front, and keep the faces simple: a few dots and a painted mustache line is enough at this scale. Shelves behind them can stay a flat pine green or cream so the red coats stay the clear focus.
If the row starts to feel monotonous, turn one or two nutcrackers slightly to the side instead of facing straight forward, which breaks the symmetry without much extra work.
Working on a smaller painting today, you can get away with suggesting the whole row as red blocks with gold dashes and only fully detailing the front two.
Palette: Poinsettia Red,Mustard Gold,Cream,Pine Green
Carollers in scarves singing with lanterns between the huts bring a group of figures into one warm huddle. Sketch three or four simple standing shapes close together, overlapping shoulders slightly so they read as a cluster rather than a lineup, each one holding a small lantern or songbook at chest height.
Think about where the light sits before you paint: the lanterns glow upward onto the undersides of the faces and scarves, so keep that area warmer and lighter while the tops of hats and shoulders stay in cooler pine green or plum shadow. This single light source does more to sell the scene than any amount of detail in the faces.
Scarves in poinsettia red and mustard gold stripes add color without needing patterned fabric; a few confident brush strokes is plenty.
If the group feels flat, stagger the figures slightly front to back rather than lining them up shoulder to shoulder.
Palette: Pine Green,Plum,Poinsettia Red,Mustard Gold,Cream
From carollers to a rink: a small skating rink between the stalls with one wobbly beginner gives you a chance to paint motion through pose rather than detail. Draw the rink as a simple pale cream oval on the ground, then place one figure with arms flung slightly out and knees bent at an awkward angle, clearly mid-wobble rather than gliding smoothly.
Give the texture of the ice a light dry brush pass of pale blue-grey over the cream oval, barely touching the paper so streaks of white show through like scratched ice. That broken, scratchy texture reads as skated-on ice far better than a flat smooth fill.
Paint the skater’s coat in plum or poinsettia red so she stands out against the pale rink, and keep her skates as two simple dark lines rather than detailed blades.
If dry brush feels tricky today, lifting a little paint off with a clean damp brush while it is still wet gives a similar scratched look.
Palette: Cream,Plum,Poinsettia Red,Pine Green
A vendor pouring mulled wine from a copper ladle into a mug turns a simple gesture into the whole picture. Sketch the vendor’s arm and the ladle at the moment of pouring, with a thin curved line showing the stream of wine landing in the mug below, and keep the pose relaxed rather than stiff at the elbow.
Paint the copper ladle in mustard gold with a touch of plum shading underneath to suggest its curve, and let the mulled wine itself be a rich poinsettia red with a thin trail of steam rising in soft cream above the mug. A big steaming pot behind the vendor in pine green grounds the scene.
The pour itself is the part that can go wrong: a stream painted too thick looks solid rather than liquid. Use a fine brush and a single confident line rather than building it up in strokes.
Quick version today: paint just the ladle, stream and mug close up, letting the vendor’s apron and arm fade into a simple shape at the edge of the frame.
Palette: Mustard Gold,Poinsettia Red,Plum,Cream,Pine Green
A stall of knitted mittens and hats hanging on wooden pegs is a nice change of pace after figures, since it is really a study in pattern repeated across soft shapes. Draw a row of simple peg dots along a horizontal beam, then hang a mitten or hat shape from each one, mixing the two so the row does not fall into a strict pattern.
One hands-on trick carries this whole piece: paint each mitten or hat as a flat base color first, poinsettia red, pine green or mustard gold, then once dry use a fine brush loaded with cream to add two or three short confident strokes for a knit pattern, snowflakes or stripes. Resist the urge to cover the whole surface; a little pattern reads as a lot of knitting.
If the pegs look too mechanical in a straight row, let the beam dip very slightly so it feels like real wood rather than a ruled line.
Short on time, paint three mittens and two hats rather than a full stall; a smaller stall still feels complete at this scale.
Palette: Poinsettia Red,Pine Green,Mustard Gold,Cream
A craftsman painting a glass bauble with a tiny brush brings the market’s craft work right up close. Draw a single large round bauble held in one hand, the craftsman’s other hand steadying a thin brush at its surface, and keep the hands simplified: a few confident shapes rather than detailed fingers.
Consider the light here before you paint, since this scene works best lit from one side, a warm glow falling across the bauble’s curve while the hand holding it stays slightly in shadow. That single light direction is what makes the glass feel round rather than flat.
Base the bauble in a soft plum or pine green, then add a thin curved highlight stroke in cream along the lit edge to suggest its glossy surface, and a tiny dab of poinsettia red where the craftsman’s brush is actually touching it.
If you want a simpler version today, crop in tight on just the hands and the bauble and skip the rest of the workshop entirely.
Palette: Plum,Pine Green,Cream,Poinsettia Red
For reference on how glass highlights sit, look at any round glass object under a single lamp rather than a photo of a bauble, since the curve of the highlight matters more than the ornament’s pattern.
A stall of straw stars and woven straw ornaments is all about geometry: stars, simple woven circles and little straw angels built from clean straight lines. Pencil a cluster of star outlines at different sizes first, each one just a few crossing lines rather than a fully filled shape, since straw stars are mostly open space.
Paint them in a flat mustard gold, then once dry use a fine brush and a slightly darker gold or thinned plum to add a handful of short straight lines radiating from the center of each star, echoing how real straw is bundled and tied. Keep the lines straight and spaced evenly rather than curved, which is what sells the straw material.
The mistake to watch for is over-filling the stars until they read as solid shapes instead of woven ones. Leave visible cream background showing through the open parts of each star.
Hang a few from a plain thread line against pine green sprigs for contrast if the gold starts to feel like too much of one color.

A copper pan of candied almonds stirred in a cloud of steam is a small still life with a lot of warmth in it. Draw the pan as a wide shallow oval on its stand, filled with a scatter of small almond shapes, and a long wooden spoon resting at an angle across the top.
For the quick version today, block in the copper pan in mustard gold with a plum shadow along its lower edge, fill it with cream and gold almond shapes, and leave it there; that alone reads as a finished stall scene in ten minutes. For the fuller forty-minute version, add soft cream steam curling up from the pan in loose curved strokes, and a light dusting of white gouache flicked across the almonds for the sugar coating.
The steam is the part most likely to look stiff. Paint it with a nearly dry brush in a loose S-curve rather than a straight line, and let it fade out rather than stopping abruptly.
No copper-toned gold on hand, a warm burnt orange mixed with a touch of yellow gets close.
You Will Need
- toothbrush or stiff brush for sugar flicks
Palette: Mustard Gold,Plum,Cream,Poinsettia Red
A girl choosing a glass bird ornament with her grandmother is a quiet two-figure moment that works well right after a still life like the almond pan. Draw the grandmother slightly taller and more upright, the girl smaller and leaning in with one hand reaching toward a small glass bird ornament held up between them.
Keep proportion in mind: the girl’s head should be noticeably larger relative to her body than the grandmother’s, which is what reads instantly as child versus adult even in simple flat shapes. Their coats in pine green and plum give the two figures a shared palette so they feel connected rather than separate.
Paint the bird ornament itself last, small and bright in mustard gold or cream with a touch of red at its tail, held at the exact center of the composition so the eye goes there first.
If the two figures feel disconnected once painted, add a single line of connection, the girl’s hand resting near the grandmother’s sleeve, to pull them together.
Palette: Pine Green,Plum,Mustard Gold,Poinsettia Red,Cream
A dog in a red scarf waiting patiently beside a stall is a small, calm subject that makes a good break from painting people. Draw a simple seated dog shape, round body, upright ears, tail curled close, with a bold poinsettia red scarf looped once around its neck and trailing slightly to one side.
One hands-on trick makes the fur feel real without much extra work: once the base coat of brown or cream is dry, use a dry, slightly stiff brush with very little paint to drag short strokes along the chest and ears, letting the texture break up rather than cover smoothly. That dry brush scruffiness reads as fur far better than a flat fill ever will.
Keep the eyes as two simple dark dots and a single curved line for a relaxed mouth, since too much detail in a small dog’s face tends to look worried rather than patient.
If dry brush feels too fiddly today, a few short pencil-like lines in a darker shade over the dry paint give a similar effect.
Palette: Poinsettia Red,Mustard Gold,Cream,Plum
Carved wooden smoking men puffing incense on a stall shelf bring a traditional German market figure into close focus. Draw two or three simple rounded figures standing in a row, each with a tall narrow body, a round head and arms held slightly out from the sides, varying their painted coats so they read as a small collection rather than copies.
Paint the coats in poinsettia red, pine green and mustard gold, then add a thin curl of pale cream smoke rising from each figure’s mouth, drawn as a loose wavering line rather than a straight one, since real incense smoke never travels in a perfectly straight path.
Where this can go wrong is painting all the smoke curls identically. Vary their curves and heights slightly, and let one trail off the top of the frame while another stays short.
If you are short on reference for the shape of these figures, a simple nutcracker silhouette with a pipe added to the mouth gets you close enough for this style.
Palette: Poinsettia Red,Pine Green,Mustard Gold,Cream
A stall of hand-carved wooden nativity figures is a chance to paint a small group of simple standing and kneeling shapes with a shared wood tone. Sketch three or four figures at varied heights, one kneeling, two standing, grouped closely on a stall shelf, keeping each body as a smooth rounded form without fussy detail.
Base every figure in a warm mustard gold or soft brown to suggest the carved wood, then use a fine brush with a touch of plum to add simple shading lines where one figure overlaps another, which is what separates the group into individual pieces rather than one blob.
Robes can take a small accent of pine green or poinsettia red painted on at the very end, just a sash or a small square of color, since the figures themselves should stay mostly wood-toned.
If the group feels too even in height, raise one figure slightly on a small painted block or step, which also gives the shelf a sense of depth.
Palette: Mustard Gold,Plum,Pine Green,Poinsettia Red
A wooden Christmas pyramid with candles turning its little angels is a satisfying shape to build: a tall triangular wooden frame with small painted figures standing on a round platform inside. Draw the triangle frame first with a flat top platform, then place three or four tiny angel or figure shapes evenly around its edge, each holding a small painted detail like a horn or a star.
Measure before you paint the candles: space them evenly around the base of the platform, matching the number of figures above so each one has its own flame beneath it, which is what makes the whole mechanism read correctly even in a flat illustration.
Paint the wooden frame in mustard gold with pine green trim at the edges, and let each small candle flame sit in cream and poinsettia red at the very base.
If the frame’s triangle feels too stiff and geometric, round the top point slightly and let the side struts taper rather than staying perfectly straight.
Palette: Mustard Gold,Pine Green,Poinsettia Red,Cream
An old man playing a barrel organ with a tiny dog at his feet gives you a bent, working pose next to a small resting shape. Draw the man leaning slightly forward, one arm extended to turn the organ’s crank, his coat a simple rounded block of color, with a small dog curled or sitting close against his leg.
Check the eye level before you paint: if you place the horizon low, at roughly the man’s knee height, the organ and his bent torso loom slightly larger in the frame, which gives this quiet street performer a bit more presence without changing the pose.
Paint the organ itself in plum and mustard gold with a simple painted front panel, and keep the man’s coat in a muted pine green so the warmer organ colors stay the focal point.
If the crank-turning arm looks awkward, simplify it to two straight segments meeting at a clear elbow bend rather than trying to curve the whole arm smoothly.
Palette: Plum,Mustard Gold,Pine Green,Cream
Melted raclette scraped onto potatoes for a smiling couple is a food close-up full of warm color and a little steam. Draw a small round of cheese tilted toward a plate of simple oval potato shapes, with a hand holding a scraper mid-motion, cheese caught in a soft drooping curve as it falls.
Quick version today: paint the cheese pour, the potatoes and the hand holding the scraper close up, and stop there, since that alone reads as the whole moment in about ten minutes. For the longer version, pull back slightly to include the smiling couple’s faces at the edge of the frame, softly lit by the warmth of the melting cheese.
Paint the cheese in a rich mustard gold with a touch of cream where the light catches the drip, and the potatoes in a slightly cooler gold so the two don’t blend into one flat shape.
The falling cheese is the trickiest part; paint it as one continuous curved stroke rather than several short ones, which keeps it looking molten rather than chopped.
Palette: Mustard Gold,Cream,Poinsettia Red,Plum
A stall of soft felt gnomes with long pointed hats is one of the easiest shapes on this list: a cone for the hat, a rounded triangle for the body, and almost no face at all. Draw a small cluster of three or four gnomes at different heights, each hat drooping or leaning at a slightly different angle so the group has movement.
Paint the hats in poinsettia red, mustard gold and pine green, and the bodies in cream or a soft grey, leaving most faces hidden entirely behind a bushy painted beard, which is both true to the craft and much easier to paint than features.
Vary it next time by swapping the hat colors for plum or by adding a tiny painted mitten or lantern held in one gnome’s hand, since this simple shape takes decoration well once the basic form feels comfortable.
If the group looks too uniform, let one gnome’s hat flop sideways completely rather than standing upright like the rest.
Palette: Poinsettia Red,Mustard Gold,Pine Green,Cream
A robin perched on the snowy edge of a stall roof is a small breather between the busier stalls, a single bird against a simple roofline. Draw the robin as a round plump body with a smaller rounded head, feet tucked under, perched right at the edge where a thin line of snow sits along the roof’s edge.
Measure the robin against the roofline before you commit to paint: keep the bird small relative to the roof edge, since a bird painted too large loses the cozy, glimpsed quality that makes this subject work.
Paint the breast in poinsettia red, the back in a soft plum-brown, and the snow along the roof edge in thick cream gouache applied with a slightly loaded brush so it sits up off the page with real texture.
If the snow line looks too even, vary its thickness along the roof and let a few small clumps drip slightly over the edge.
Palette: Poinsettia Red,Plum,Cream,Pine Green
A lantern seller lighting paper star lanterns at dusk is a good subject for practicing light against a darker ground. Draw the seller reaching up to light one lantern among several hanging star shapes, the rest already glowing softly around it.
Think about where the light sits: paint the background in a deepened dusk plum rather than the usual cream, then let each lantern glow outward from mustard gold at its center into a soft lighter halo, which only works because the surrounding tone is dark enough to show it off.
Keep the seller’s figure mostly in silhouette, a flat dark shape with only the edges catching a little warm light from the nearest lantern, rather than fully painted like the other figures on this list.
If the darker background feels risky, test the plum tone on a scrap first, since gouache dries slightly lighter than it looks wet, and you want it dark enough to carry the glow.
Palette: Plum,Mustard Gold,Cream,Poinsettia Red
A stall of lace snowflakes and embroidered stockings brings in delicate pattern after the bolder shapes of a lantern stall. Draw a few large snowflake outlines and two or three hanging stocking shapes side by side, keeping the stocking silhouettes simple and rounded at the toe and heel.
Base the stockings in cream or soft pine green, then use a fine brush or a white gel pen once the paint is dry to add a small repeated embroidery pattern along the cuff, a row of tiny crosses or dots is enough to suggest stitching without drawing every thread.
The snowflakes work best kept to six simple points rather than an elaborate lace pattern, since too much fine detail at this scale turns into a blur rather than a crisp shape.
If a gel pen is not to hand, a very fine brush with thinned white gouache gives a similar crisp line, just let it dry fully before handling.
You Will Need
- white gel pen
Palette: Cream,Pine Green,Poinsettia Red,Mustard Gold
A boy pressing his nose to a stall of chocolate figures is a small, warm moment of longing that needs very little beyond a good silhouette. Draw the boy from behind or in profile, nose close to a low shelf lined with a handful of chocolate figures, simple rounded shapes in warm brown tones.
Keep proportion honest here: a child’s head is larger in proportion to his body than an adult’s, so draw the boy’s head a touch bigger than feels natural, which instantly reads as young rather than simply short.
Paint the chocolate figures in a rich plum-brown with a touch of mustard gold for a glossy highlight on each one, and let the boy’s coat be a simple flat poinsettia red so he stands out clearly against the warmer chocolate shelf.
If the figures start to look too similar to the nativity stall elsewhere in this list, keep these rounder and simpler, more like plain bells and animals than carved detail.
Palette: Plum,Mustard Gold,Poinsettia Red,Cream
A stall of dried orange garlands and cinnamon bundles gives you a chance to paint overlapping circles and thin sticks threaded together. Draw a garland of dried orange slices strung on twine across the top of the frame, then a scatter of small cinnamon stick bundles tied with twine below.
Paint the orange slices in a warm mustard gold with a slightly darker ring near the outer edge to suggest the dried rind, and the cinnamon sticks in a soft reddish brown, keeping each stick as a simple thin rectangle rather than trying to render bark texture.
Quick version today: paint just one garland strand and two cinnamon bundles close up, which fills the frame nicely in about ten minutes. The forty-minute version adds a few whole star anise shapes tucked among the bundles for extra texture.
If the orange slices look too flat, add two or three short pale lines radiating from the center of each one to suggest the fruit’s natural segments.
Palette: Mustard Gold,Poinsettia Red,Plum,Cream
A wreath maker tying fir branches at her stall is a hands-on action shot worth building around the gesture of tying. Draw a large wreath ring in progress, half filled with pine branches, with the maker’s hands at the point of tucking in a fresh branch and tying it off with twine.
Vary it next time once the basic wreath feels comfortable: try it with a bright poinsettia red ribbon woven through instead of plain twine, or add a cluster of pinecones and a few dried orange slices for a second version with a different mood.
Paint the fir branches as clusters of short overlapping brushstrokes in pine green rather than individual needles, building the ring up gradually so it reads as full and textured without being painted one needle at a time.
If the ring shape wobbles, lightly trace around a plate or lid for the outer circle before you start adding branches, then paint freely from there.
You Will Need
- a plate or lid to trace the ring
Palette: Pine Green,Poinsettia Red,Mustard Gold,Cream
A cat curled on a stack of wool blankets at a stall is a calm, rounded subject that pairs well with the wreath maker’s busier scene before it. Draw a simple stack of folded blanket rectangles in varying heights, then curl the cat into a tight round shape on top, tail wrapped around its body, eyes closed.
Paint the blankets in alternating poinsettia red, pine green and cream stripes or solid blocks, and the cat in a soft plum-grey, letting its curled shape sit clearly on top rather than sinking into the blanket colors.
One texture trick finishes this nicely: once the cat’s base color is dry, use a kneaded eraser or the dry edge of a brush to lightly lift a few streaks of color along its back, suggesting the direction of the fur without painting every strand.
If a kneaded eraser will not lift gouache cleanly, a few short dry-brush strokes in a slightly lighter tone achieve the same soft fur direction.
You Will Need
- kneaded eraser (optional)
Palette: Plum,Poinsettia Red,Pine Green,Cream
A shelf of sparkling snow globes with tiny towns inside lets you paint a scene within a scene. Draw a row of simple round globes on short pedestals, then inside each one sketch a tiny cluster of two or three small house shapes with pointed roofs, kept very simple since they are meant to read as miniature.
Paint the glass of each globe with a thin ring of cream along its curved edge to suggest reflected light, then fill the inside with the tiny town in mustard gold and pine green against a pale sky, letting the globe’s round shape curve the scene slightly rather than painting it flat.
Finish with a scatter of small white gouache dots flicked across each globe’s interior for falling snow, using a stiff brush and a light flick of the thumb rather than painting individual flakes by hand.
If the inner town looks too detailed and busy, simplify it further; at this scale, three house shapes and one tiny tree is plenty.
You Will Need
- toothbrush or stiff brush for snow flicks
Palette: Cream,Mustard Gold,Pine Green,Plum
A stall of honey jars and beeswax angels makes a good closing piece, warm and golden to match the mood of everything before it. Draw a row of simple jar shapes with rounded shoulders and narrow necks, then beside them a few small angel figures with simple triangular robes and folded wax wings, all cast from the same warm material.
Paint the honey inside each jar in a rich mustard gold with a slightly darker shade pooling at the base, and leave a thin bright highlight along one side of each jar to suggest the glass. The beeswax angels can stay in the same gold family, just a shade paler, so the whole stall reads as one warm, cohesive glow.
If the jars start to look identical, vary their shapes slightly, one taller and narrower, one short and round, and label-free lids in simple cream circles on top.
For a softer finish today, blend the honey’s darker base shade into the lighter gold while both are still wet, rather than painting them as two hard-edged layers.
Palette: Mustard Gold,Cream,Plum,Pine Green
What to Do Next
Pick one stall that pulls at you first, whether that is the glowing candles or the cat asleep on the blankets, and start there on a small sheet of gouache paper. Keep your palette to the five warm colors throughout, and by the time you finish one scene the next will already feel familiar.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best paper for a christmas market illustration in gouache?
A heavier cold press or mixed media paper of at least 250 gsm works best, since it handles the repeated layers and dry brush work in these scenes without buckling or pilling.
How do I keep gouache edges crisp instead of fuzzy?
Let each shape dry fully before painting the one next to it, and use a smaller round brush loaded with slightly thicker paint rather than a thin wash, which spreads and softens the edge.
Do I need a lot of colors to paint these christmas market scenes?
No, a small palette of five or six colors like poinsettia red, pine green, mustard gold, plum and cream covers every idea here and keeps the whole set feeling connected.
How do I make small figures look right without drawing detailed faces?
Keep faces to a few simple marks, two dots and a line is often enough, and put your detail into the pose and coat color instead, which carries far more of the feeling at this scale.
Can I paint these market scenes without visiting a real Christmas market?
Yes, every idea here is built from simple shapes and common market objects you likely already picture clearly, so working from imagination or loose reference photos is enough.
