33 Ladybug Doodle Ideas of Leaf Boats, Spot Counting and Tiny Umbrellas

6

A ladybug doodle is about the fastest way to fill a page with something cheerful: a few round shapes, a handful of dots and suddenly you have a whole little character with somewhere to be. Every idea below keeps that spirit, a small red body getting into some kind of harmless trouble on a leaf, a petal or a dewdrop.

You will find quiet ones, like a nap on a clover leaf, and busy ones, like an arm wrestling match on a pebble, so you can match the mood of the page to the five minutes or the forty minutes you actually have. Grab a black fineliner and a poppy red and clover green marker, and work through the list from the simplest shapes to the more involved little scenes.

Start the whole set with a ladybug floating on a leaf boat, since the shapes here are as basic as this list gets: one long curved leaf for the hull, one oval body on top, one twig held in two tiny front legs as a paddle. Draw the leaf first with the fineliner, a simple pointed oval with a center vein line, then sit the ladybug dome in the middle before adding legs that dip over the sides like a rower.

Colour the shell poppy red leaving a white fleck for shine, the leaf clover green, and keep the water underneath as a few loose curved lines rather than a filled shape. If the paddle looks stiff, angle it diagonally across the body instead of straight down, it reads as motion immediately.

Swap the twig for a blade of grass if you want a lighter paddle shape. For today, draw the leaf boat tilted slightly to one side, it sells the floating feeling far better than a flat, level hull.

Move from floating to sheltering with a ladybug holding a tiny umbrella in a light drizzle. Keep the proportion trick simple here: draw the umbrella canopy about the same width as the ladybug’s whole body, any bigger and it swallows the character, any smaller and it looks like a toothpick.

Draw the body and dome first, then the umbrella handle coming off one front leg, then the canopy as a half circle with a few scalloped bumps along the bottom edge. Add three or four short diagonal lines around her for the drizzle before you touch any colour.

Colour the shell poppy red, the umbrella clover green, and leave the rain lines as plain black ink so they do not compete with the two main colours. If straight rain lines feel flat, curve them slightly in the direction the drizzle is blowing.

Here is a subject built entirely around proportion: a ladybug counting its own spots with one foot, confused, so the spots need to read clearly as individual round dots a reader could actually count. Draw the dome and body first, then space five or six spots evenly across the shell rather than scattering them, since even spacing is what makes the counting joke work.

Lift one front leg to touch a spot and tilt the head slightly, a small diagonal line for each antenna bending inward reads as puzzled. Draw two tiny eyebrow lines above the eyes for the confused look before adding any colour.

Fill the shell poppy red and leave the spots black ink only, no fill, so they stay crisp. If the spots end up uneven, a kneaded eraser can lift a stray pencil guideline before you ink the final dots.

Palette: Poppy Red,Black Ink

Sketch the spot positions lightly in pencil first and count them out loud, it catches an uneven number before the fineliner makes it permanent.

Build on that spot spacing with two ladybugs sitting face to face on a daisy, a good subject for thinking about eye level and where the light sits. Draw the daisy first, a center circle with eight or nine rounded petals seen from slightly above, then place the two ladybug domes facing each other across the middle like they are mid conversation.

Keep both bodies the same size so neither bug reads as the parent, and angle their antennae toward each other to suggest they are actually talking. Ink the daisy petals as simple outlines, no fill, so the white paper does the work of petal colour.

Colour both shells poppy red with clover green for the daisy’s center ring or stem if you add one. If the two faces feel stiff, a tiny curved line for a smile on each one warms up the whole scene fast.

This is the trickiest shape so far, a ladybug lifting its shell to show off its wings like a cape, so give the hands-on texture trick your full attention: the wing underneath should look thin and slightly transparent compared to the solid shell. Draw the lifted shell first as a curved flap tilted up from one side of the body, hinged near the head, then draw the wing shape underneath as a soft rounded fan.

Ink the wing with lighter, more broken lines than the shell’s solid outline, that contrast is what makes it read as delicate. Keep the body and legs standing in a confident, slightly puffed up pose, like the ladybug knows this is a good trick.

Colour the shell poppy red on its outer side, leave the underside of the flap and the wing fan uncoloured or washed very lightly with green, and keep the spots on the outer shell only. If the wing shape looks too stiff, round off its edges more, capes flutter, they do not stand straight.

Palette: Poppy Red,Black Ink

Keep the energy going with a ladybug flapping hard but rising only an inch off a leaf, a fun one for the ten minute versus forty minute split. For the quick version, draw the ladybug hovering just above a simple leaf outline with two blurred wing shapes and three or four short motion lines beneath its feet, done.

For the longer version, add a strained, squinting face, a few sweat drop marks beside the head, and extra speed lines trailing off each wing tip to really sell the effort. Either way, ink the leaf first so you know exactly how much gap to leave between the feet and the surface.

Colour the shell poppy red and the leaf clover green, keeping the wing blur as loose black scribble rather than a filled shape. If the hover gap looks too big or small, measure it against the height of the ladybug’s own body, about half that height works well.

Palette: Poppy Red,Clover Green,Black Ink

Follow the counting joke with its sequel, a ladybug searching for its missing spot with a magnifying glass, which leans on perspective and light. Decide where the magnifying glass sits relative to the body, held out in front at an angle, and draw the lens as a slightly larger circle than you think it should be so it clearly dominates the scene.

Draw the ladybug’s body with one obviously blank, spot-free patch on the shell before anything else, that gap is the whole point of the drawing. Add the magnifying glass handle running back to a front leg, then ink a single curved highlight line across the lens glass to suggest it catches light.

Colour the shell poppy red, leaving that one patch white, and keep the magnifying glass frame black ink with no fill so the lens stays clear. If the lens looks flat, that one curved highlight line is all it needs, resist adding more.

Palette: Poppy Red,Black Ink

Soften the mood with a ladybug that has heart-shaped spots, blushing, a nice one for anyone who wants to practice a single tricky shape over and over. Draw the body and dome first, then instead of round dots, ink small heart shapes across the shell, keeping them evenly spaced the same way you would plain spots.

Add two round blush marks on the cheeks below the eyes and a small shy, closed-eye smile. The place this goes wrong is lopsided hearts, so sketch each one lightly in pencil first and check both lobes match before inking over them.

Fill the shell poppy red, leave the heart spots black outline only, and colour the blush with a very light touch of the same red marker, pressed softly. If you do not have a lighter touch available, a pink coloured pencil over the red marker works just as well for the blush.

Palette: Poppy Red,Black Ink

Give the page some height with a ladybug reaching the top of a grass blade and cheering, a good subject for thinking about eye level. Draw the grass blade tall and slightly curved first, running almost the full height of the page, then place the ladybug right at the very tip, not partway up, so the sense of arrival is obvious.

Throw both front legs up in a victory pose and add two or three small curved motion lines above the head like a tiny cheer burst. Keep the rest of the page empty around the blade, that bare space is what makes the height read.

Colour the shell poppy red and the grass blade clover green with a slightly darker green line down its center for structure. If the blade looks too straight and stiff, add one gentle curve partway up, grass never grows perfectly vertical.

Palette: Poppy Red,Clover Green,Black Ink

Carry the motion forward with a ladybug sliding down a tulip petal like a playground slide. Draw one large curved tulip petal first, angled diagonally across the page like a ramp, then place the ladybug partway down with its legs tucked in and body leaning back slightly, the pose that reads as sliding rather than standing.

Add two or three short curved speed lines trailing behind the shell along the petal’s curve to push the motion further. The place this goes wrong is a petal drawn too upright, which looks like a wall instead of a slide, so keep the angle closer to forty five degrees.

Colour the petal poppy red or a softer pink marker if you have one, and keep the ladybug’s own shell a slightly deeper poppy red so the two still read as separate. If you only have the one red marker, outline the petal in black and leave it white instead, the contrast still works.

Palette: Poppy Red,Black Ink

Slow right down with a ladybug napping on a clover leaf with its feet tucked in, a quiet subject that rewards a soft hand. Draw the three lobed clover leaf first, keeping the lobes rounded rather than pointed, then nestle the ladybug body into the center lobe with all six legs drawn tucked underneath, none visible sticking out.

Add two small closed-eye curved lines for a sleeping face and a tiny zzz mark floating above the head for the quick version. For the longer version, add a faint fold line where the leaf dips slightly under the ladybug’s weight, which grounds the whole pose.

Colour the shell poppy red and the clover leaf clover green, keeping both fairly flat and calm with no motion lines anywhere on the page. If the tucked legs feel fussy to draw, a single curved line along the body’s base suggesting folded legs reads just as well as drawing each one.

Palette: Poppy Red,Clover Green,Black Ink

Lift back into the air with a ladybug riding a single dandelion seed through the air, which is really a lesson in perspective and light. Decide the seed is drifting upward and to one side, then angle the ladybug’s whole body to lean with that drift rather than sitting bolt upright, which instantly sells the floating feeling.

Draw the dandelion seed first, a tiny oval base with a loose starburst of thin lines fanning upward, then perch the ladybug on the base with legs gripping the stem part. Add two or three faint curved lines trailing behind to show the air moving past.

Keep the seed fibers black ink only, no fill, since any colour there competes with the ladybug for attention. Colour the shell poppy red, and if the starburst lines feel too neat, vary their length slightly, real dandelion seeds never fan out perfectly even.

Palette: Poppy Red,Black Ink

Bring things back to a small, still moment with a ladybug sipping a dewdrop through a tiny straw. Draw the dewdrop first as a simple teardrop shape with one curved highlight line inside it, left uncoloured or very lightly shaded, since a dewdrop reads as glass through contrast with everything around it staying flat colour.

Place the ladybug beside it leaning in, with a thin straight straw line running from its mouth into the drop. Keep the straw perfectly straight, a wobbly straw looks broken rather than charming.

Colour the shell poppy red, leave the dewdrop white with just that one highlight line in black, and add a touch of clover green underneath as a tiny leaf the drop is sitting on. If plain white feels too flat for the drop, a very pale blue pencil shading around its edge only adds just enough glassy feel.

Palette: Poppy Red,Clover Green,Black Ink

Here you can extend the last idea’s quiet mood into real motion instead, a ladybug catching a big raindrop like a beach ball. For proportion, draw the raindrop noticeably larger than the ladybug’s whole body, nearly twice its height, so the catch actually feels like effort rather than a light tap.

Draw the raindrop first as a rounded teardrop, then position the ladybug beneath it with arms spread wide and legs braced slightly apart, knees bent in the pose. Add a small strain line or two near the arms to show the weight.

Colour the shell poppy red and leave the raindrop mostly white with a single curved highlight, keeping its outline black ink only. If the raindrop looks too heavy on the page, shrink the ladybug slightly rather than the drop, that keeps the size joke intact.

Palette: Poppy Red,Black Ink

Mix in another character with a ladybug landing on the nose of a cross-eyed kitten, a fun test of keeping two very different creatures balanced on one small page. Draw the kitten’s head first as a simple rounded shape with two triangle ears, then the two eyes crossed slightly inward toward the nose, which is the whole joke of the drawing.

Place the ladybug small and centered right on the tip of the nose, legs spread slightly for balance. Keep the kitten’s expression calm rather than alarmed, a relaxed mouth line sells the gentle humor better than a shocked one.

Colour the ladybug shell poppy red, and if you want the kitten coloured too, a soft warm grey or cream marker keeps it from competing with the red and green palette. If crossed eyes feel tricky to draw convincingly, angle both pupils toward the center of the face rather than toward each other, it reads clearer at small size.

Palette: Poppy Red,Black Ink

Give the ladybug a small errand with one carrying a tiny picnic basket across a leaf, which is a nice one for the ten minute versus forty minute choice. Quick version, draw a simple leaf path underneath, the ladybug mid step, and a small basket with one curved handle hanging from a front leg, done in a few lines.

Forty minute version, add a tiny checked pattern on the basket’s side with a thin grid of lines, plus a small cloth draped over the top edge and a tiny loaf shape poking out. Either way, draw the basket handle first since the leg has to grip it believably before anything else is added.

Colour the shell poppy red, the basket a warm brown or tan if you have one, and the leaf path clover green. If brown is not in your kit, leave the basket as black outline only, it still reads clearly against the colour around it.

Palette: Poppy Red,Clover Green,Black Ink

Switch to a more physical, slapstick subject with a ladybug flipped on its back, wiggling its legs, embarrassed. For the hands-on texture trick here, draw all six legs kicking at slightly different angles rather than symmetrically, that variation is what makes the wiggle convincing instead of stiff.

Draw the flipped shell first as a dome resting flat with the pattern side down against the ground implied by a single baseline, then the pale belly facing up with the legs radiating out from it. Add a small flustered face with eyebrows raised and a thin red blush line on the cheeks.

Colour the visible underside pale or leave it white, since the red shell is hidden against the ground in this pose, with just a sliver of poppy red peeking out at one edge. If the kicking legs look too busy, cut it down to four visible legs instead of six, it still reads as a full wiggle.

Palette: Poppy Red,Black Ink

Keep the slapstick going with a ladybug arm wrestling an ant on a pebble, a good one for proportion since the two bodies need to feel evenly matched even though a real ant and ladybug differ a lot in shape. Draw the pebble first as a simple rounded shape to act as the table, then sit both characters facing each other with elbows planted on top.

Give the ant a simple three segment body and bent legs, and lock both front limbs together in the middle at the same height, that locked point is what sells the contest. Add strain lines radiating from both faces.

Colour the ladybug shell poppy red and leave the ant black ink only with no fill, which also helps the ladybug stay the visual star of the scene. If the pebble looks too plain, a few short curved lines across its surface suggest texture without much extra work.

Palette: Poppy Red,Black Ink

Send the character on a journey with a ladybug carrying a tiny suitcase, ready to fly away home. Draw the body with its wings already slightly lifted off the shell, mid takeoff, before adding the suitcase gripped in one front leg, a small rectangle with a curved handle on top and one thin strap line across it.

Angle the whole pose forward and slightly upward to suggest the start of flight rather than standing flat on the ground. The place this goes wrong is wings that look too small to lift anything, so draw them at least as long as the body itself.

Colour the shell poppy red and the suitcase clover green with a thin black strap, or leave the suitcase outline only if you want the red to stand alone. If you want more travel ideas after this one, a look at this travel doodle list has plenty of small luggage and journey props to borrow from.

Palette: Poppy Red,Clover Green,Black Ink

Return to a close up, quiet subject with a ladybug blushing even redder than usual, which works best as a practice in texture and edges rather than a full scene. Draw the head and dome large and close up, filling most of the small page, then keep everything else minimal, just the eyes, antennae and a soft closed mouth.

For the blush itself, go over the cheeks twice with the same poppy red marker, letting the second pass sit slightly darker at the center and fade toward the edges, which gives a soft gradient without needing a second colour.

Leave the rest of the shell at its normal single pass of red so the cheeks clearly read as extra flushed by comparison. If your marker bleeds unevenly on thin paper, swap to a slightly heavier sketchbook page, it holds the double pass much better.

Palette: Poppy Red,Black Ink

A kneaded eraser can lift any stray pencil sketch lines around the cheeks before the final marker pass, keeping the blush gradient clean at the edges.

Follow the blush with a calmer cousin subject, a ladybug spreading its wings to dry after a dewdrop bath. Draw the body first with both wings spread fully open and flat, wider than the shell on either side, since a tucked wing would not read as drying at all.

Add a few short curved lines along the wing edges to suggest dampness catching light, and a tiny puddle or dewdrop shape just beneath the feet to show where the bath happened. Keep the face relaxed with eyes closed, enjoying the sun.

Colour the shell poppy red and leave the spread wings mostly uncoloured or very lightly shaded grey, since full colour on the wings would make them look solid rather than damp and thin. If grey is not available, a light pencil hatching under the wing lines gives the same damp effect.

Palette: Poppy Red,Black Ink

Keep the bath theme going with a ladybug relaxing in an acorn cap like a bathtub, a nice one for perspective since the cap needs to look like it is cradling the body rather than sitting flat beside it. Draw the acorn cap first from a slightly tilted top down angle, its textured rim drawn as a row of small bumps, then nestle the ladybug body down inside it with only the head and legs poking over the rim.

Add a few loose curved lines inside the cap to suggest water, and two tiny legs draped lazily over the rim’s edge for a relaxed pose. Keep the bump texture on the cap consistent in size, uneven bumps make it look chewed rather than textured.

Colour the ladybug shell poppy red and the acorn cap a warm brown, or leave the cap as black outline only if brown is not in your kit. If you enjoy small cozy critter scenes like this, the mouse drawing list has several more tiny cozy setups worth a look.

Palette: Poppy Red,Black Ink

Scale things up with a ladybug hugging a cherry twice its size, which leans entirely on proportion. Draw the cherry first, a plump round shape with a curved stem and one small leaf, sized clearly larger than the ladybug’s whole body including legs, then wrap the ladybug’s arms and legs around its widest point.

Angle the ladybug’s body slightly backward as if leaning into the hug rather than standing stiffly upright against it, that lean sells the affection. Add one small highlight oval on the cherry’s surface to give it some roundness.

Colour the cherry poppy red with a slightly darker red for the highlight edge, and colour the ladybug shell the same poppy red so the two nearly blend, broken apart only by the black spot outlines. If you want the two to contrast more instead, shift the cherry toward a deeper red marker and keep the ladybug at the brighter poppy red.

Palette: Poppy Red,Clover Green,Black Ink

Bring back some motion with a ladybug doing a handstand on the tip of a leaf, which is really a balance drawing, so think of it as the same measuring trick as the grass blade cheer, placing the weight exactly over the narrowest point. Draw the leaf tip first, a single pointed end jutting up, then invert the ladybug body with its two front legs planted right on that tip and the back legs kicked up into the air.

Keep the body centered directly above the legs, not leaning to either side, or the whole pose reads as falling rather than balancing. Add a small determined, focused expression rather than a panicked one.

Colour the shell poppy red and the leaf clover green, with a thin highlight line along the leaf’s spine for structure. If balancing the upside down shapes feels tricky, sketch a light vertical guideline in pencil first and erase it once the ink is dry.

Palette: Poppy Red,Clover Green,Black Ink

Have some fun with scale and recognition with a ladybug sitting on a red button, perfectly camouflaged. Draw the button first as a simple circle with two or four small holes near its center, keeping the holes evenly spaced, then place the ladybug off to one side of the button rather than dead center, which makes the camouflage joke land better since you first scan the button, then spot the bug.

Match the button’s red closely to the shell’s poppy red using the same marker for both, that matching color is the entire point of the drawing. Keep the button’s outline and holes in black ink only so the colour match stays uninterrupted.

If you want to push the camouflage further, skip outlining the ladybug’s body edge entirely and let only the black spots and legs reveal where it sits. For a plain button instead of red, this joke also works with any single flat colour you have plenty of.

Palette: Poppy Red,Black Ink

Give the ladybug a small task again with one ringing a bluebell flower like a doorbell. Draw the bluebell first, a drooping bell shaped flower hanging from a thin curved stem, then place the ladybug reaching one front leg up to touch the flower’s open mouth like pressing a button.

Tilt the bluebell’s opening slightly toward the ladybug rather than straight down, that small angle makes the reaching gesture make visual sense. Add two or three small motion lines near the flower’s rim to suggest a gentle ring or chime.

Colour the bluebell a soft blue or purple marker if available, and the ladybug shell poppy red for a clear contrast between the two. If blue is not in your kit, leave the bluebell as black outline only and let the poppy red ladybug carry all the colour on the page.

Palette: Poppy Red,Black Ink

Scale the hug idea into a pair with a ladybug giving a piggyback ride to a smaller ladybug, a nice follow up proportion exercise since the second bug needs to read clearly as younger and smaller, roughly two thirds the size of the first. Draw the larger ladybug’s body first in a slightly crouched, weight bearing stance, then perch the smaller one on its back with tiny arms wrapped around the front one’s neck area.

Keep the smaller bug’s legs dangling rather than touching the ground, that detail confirms it is being carried rather than just standing nearby. Give the larger one a determined forward lean and the smaller one a happy, relaxed face.

Colour both shells poppy red but vary the spot count slightly between them, fewer spots on the smaller one reads as a younger bug without needing any other change. If the two overlapping bodies get confusing to ink, draw the back bug’s outline first then the front bug’s outline over it, so the front one stays visually on top.

Palette: Poppy Red,Black Ink

Introduce another character with a ladybug tipping a tiny hat to a passing bee, a good subject for pushing a simple gesture into a full scene. Draw the ladybug first with a small round hat already perched at a slight angle on its dome, then draw the bee flying past off to one side with simple striped body and two small transparent wing shapes.

Lift the hat slightly off the head with one front leg to show the tip of the brim, rather than leaving it flat, that lift is what makes the gesture read as a greeting rather than just wearing a hat. Add a short curved flight path line behind the bee to show it passing by rather than standing still.

Colour the ladybug shell poppy red and the bee’s stripes black and a warm yellow marker if you have one, keeping the wings uncoloured. If you enjoy drawing small flying characters together like this, the mini doodle list has more tiny paired scenes worth trying next.

Palette: Poppy Red,Black Ink

Add some comedy back in with a ladybug sneezing at a fuzzy yellow flower. Draw the flower first, a simple round center with short soft petal fuzz lines radiating out rather than clean smooth petals, since that fuzziness is what triggers the joke visually.

Draw the ladybug leaning back slightly from the flower with eyes squeezed shut, antennae pulled back, and a small burst of short curved lines near its nose area for the sneeze itself. Add a tiny cloud of pollen specks drifting between the flower and the ladybug’s face.

Colour the flower a warm yellow marker and the ladybug shell poppy red, keeping the sneeze burst and pollen specks black ink only so they stay light and scribbly rather than heavy. If yellow is not available, leave the flower’s petals as black outline only and focus the colour entirely on the ladybug.

Palette: Poppy Red,Black Ink

Slow back down with a ladybug resting in a leaf hammock between two stems, a nice one for working on a hands-on sense of sag and tension in the line. Draw the two stems first standing a short distance apart, then draw a single leaf strung between them with its edges curving downward in a clear sagging dip rather than a flat, straight line.

Place the ladybug settled right into the lowest point of that dip, body relaxed, legs loosely hanging off either side rather than tucked tight. The place this goes wrong is a hammock leaf that looks tight and flat, so exaggerate the sag a little more than feels natural.

Colour the ladybug shell poppy red and the hammock leaf and stems clover green, with a slightly darker green line along the leaf’s lowest fold to emphasize the dip. If the stems look too thin to hold weight, thicken them slightly where the leaf attaches at each end.

Palette: Poppy Red,Clover Green,Black Ink

Shift to a nighttime mood with a ladybug holding a tiny lantern on a dark walk home, which is a clear case for thinking about where the light sits. Decide the lantern is the only light source in the scene, then draw a soft glow ring around it with a few short radiating lines before anything else, everything else in the drawing should feel dim by comparison.

Draw the ladybug walking with the lantern held out in one front leg, body leaning slightly forward into the walk. Keep the background mostly empty rather than adding stars or a moon, too many light sources competes with the lantern’s glow.

Colour the shell poppy red but slightly muted or shaded darker near the body’s underside away from the glow, and colour the lantern’s flame a warm yellow if available, left white if not. If you want to vary this next time, swap the lantern for a firefly jar instead, the same glow trick still applies.

Palette: Poppy Red,Black Ink

Return to a small, sincere gesture with a ladybug carrying a single seed like a huge treasure, a good one for texture work on the seed itself. Draw the seed first, oval and slightly ridged with a few short curved lines across its surface to suggest a hard shell texture, then size it large in the ladybug’s grip, nearly half the body’s own width.

Hold the seed in both front legs rather than one, cradled carefully against the chest, which reads far more precious than a casual one legged carry. Add a small proud, careful expression on the face.

Colour the ladybug shell poppy red and leave the seed a warm tan or uncoloured with just the ridge lines in black, since too much colour on the seed competes with its texture detail. If tan is unavailable, a light pencil shading over the ridge lines adds enough dimension without a new marker.

Palette: Poppy Red,Black Ink

Close the set on a warm, direct note with a ladybug landing on a fingertip and waving hello, a fitting last subject since it brings the reader right into the scene. Draw a simple fingertip shape first, just the end segment with a curved nail line, rather than a full hand, which keeps the focus on the ladybug and avoids the trickier proportions of a whole hand.

Place the ladybug standing right at the very tip with one front leg raised in a clear wave, body angled slightly toward the viewer rather than in profile, that small turn makes the greeting feel aimed at you.

Colour the shell poppy red and leave the fingertip as a simple black outline with a touch of pale shading if you want some form to it. If you have enjoyed this whole set, a browse through the hamster doodle list keeps the same small, cheerful energy going with a different tiny character.

What to Do Next

Pick whichever ladybug caught your eye first, grab a scrap of paper or the next open page in your sketchbook, and start with the body and dome before anything else. Keep the fineliner loose, let the poppy red and clover green sit in flat patches, and you will have a finished little scene well before the page fills up.

Frequently Asked Questions

What pens work best for a ladybug doodle?

A black fineliner for the outlines plus a poppy red and clover green marker covers every idea here. Thin tip fineliners around 0.3 to 0.5 keep the small spots and legs crisp at this tiny scale.

How do I keep the spots looking even?

Sketch the spot positions lightly in pencil first and space them around the shell before inking. Counting them out loud as you place them catches an uneven number before the ink becomes permanent.

What paper should I use for marker doodles like this?

A sketchbook page with slightly heavier weight paper stops the red and green markers bleeding through to the next page. Plain or dot grid paper both work fine since the shapes here are simple and freehand.

How do I make a ladybug doodle look less stiff?

Angle the legs and antennae instead of drawing them straight up and down, and lean the whole body slightly in the direction of its action. A small tilt in the pose does more for personality than extra detail.

Can I do these without the coloured markers?

Yes, every idea still works in black fineliner alone with the spots left as the only solid black fill. The red and green just add a quick finishing touch, they are not required to make the joke or pose read clearly.
