A good bakery illustration is really a small love letter to warmth on a cold street: steamed up glass, a bell over the door, someone waiting their turn for something sweet. Every idea below gives you a little scene with people in it, not just a plate of pastries floating on white, so the page tells a story the moment you pick up your brush.
You will find shop fronts in the snow, bakers mid shift, and customers choosing their treats, each one sized for a single sitting with loose watercolor and a few fine ink lines to hold the shapes together. Scroll through, pick whichever pulls you in first, and start wherever feels most doable today.

Start with the window frame in pencil, just a simple rectangle with a mullion or two, then switch straight to paint before you draw anything inside it. Wet the whole glass area first and drop in pale cream and powder blue so the trays of cinnamon buns behind read as soft blurred shapes rather than sharp objects, which is exactly what steamed glass does to anything behind it.
Once that wash is dry, add the barest hint of bun shapes with a small brush loaded with cinnamon brown, keeping the edges fuzzy so they still look behind glass. The common mistake here is painting the buns too crisply, which breaks the steam effect completely, so if that happens, go back in with a clean damp brush and soften the lines while the paint is still a little workable.
Finish with ink only on the window frame itself, the sill and maybe a hand-lettered sign shape, never on the buns inside. If you do not have a fine liner, a sharpened watercolor pencil in a dark brown gives a similar soft edge without the hard commitment of pen.
Today’s tip: paint the glass wash first and let it dry fully before any detail goes on top, patience here is what makes the steam look real.

Baker sliding loaves from a brick oven asks for a simple figure first, so block in the body with a pencil line showing the lean forward and the long paddle held out in front. Keep the oven mouth as a dark arch behind them, painted in a wash of burnt orange and brown while everything else stays pale, since the glow should be the brightest part of the whole page.
Paint the loaves themselves as simple ovals in warm cream and golden brown, added once the oven arch has dried so the shapes stay separate and readable. If the figure ends up looking stiff, loosen the apron and sleeve edges with a wet brush dragged outward, which suggests movement without redrawing anything.
Work the apron in white paper left bare or the faintest wash, letting the oven glow bounce light onto it from one side only. A cotton bud dipped in clean water lifts color back out if the glow wash goes on too dark.
Keep your one light source consistent: everything near the oven mouth gets warm color, everything further away stays cool and pale.

A queue of people in scarves gives you a row of simple standing shapes, so sketch them as soft cone or oval bodies first, varying the heights so the line reads naturally rather than like paper dolls. Keep faces barely suggested, a dot or two is enough, since the scarves and coats are doing the storytelling here.
Paint the coats in a few different muted colors so the queue does not blur into one block, then drop a raspberry pink scarf or hat onto just one or two figures to pull the eye along the line. The snow on the ground goes in as a pale blue-grey wash around the figures’ feet, left mostly as bare white paper with shadow only where boots meet the ground.
If the queue starts looking crowded or confused, simplify by removing a figure or two rather than adding detail to fix it. Watercolor pencils work as a stand in for the fine liner if you want softer scarf and coat lines instead of crisp ink.
Vary this scene next time by changing the time of day, a queue lit by early lamplight feels completely different from one in flat daylight.

Nose pressed to glass is a pose everyone recognizes, so draw the girl’s back and the curve of her coat first, her hand resting flat against the window, before anything else goes on the page. Keep her a simple silhouette in a darker wash, since she reads better as a shape than as a face full of detail.
The tarts behind the glass are the real color moment, so paint those first in little raspberry pink and lemon rounds, then glaze a very pale blue wash over the whole window area once they are dry to push them slightly behind glass. This layering order matters, paint the tarts before the glass glaze or the colors will muddy together.
If her silhouette looks flat, add one warm highlight along her shoulder or hood edge in a lighter tone to show the window light catching her. A straight edge or ruler helps keep the window frame crisp if your hand feels shaky with the pen.
Try this one in ten minutes as just the girl and window, or spend closer to forty minutes adding a second child beside her and a string of lights above.
Palette: Payne’s Grey,Raspberry Pink,Lemon Yellow,Powder Blue
A baker in a white apron dusting sugar over buns turns on one simple trick: leave the sugar as untouched white paper rather than painting it. Sketch the baker’s arm raised with a small sieve or shaker, buns laid out below in a loose row, before any paint touches the page.
Paint the buns and apron shadows first in warm cinnamon and soft grey, working around the areas where sugar will fall so the paper stays clean there. Once dry, flick a few tiny dots of white gouache or a white gel pen over the buns to suggest sugar caught mid air, which reads far better than trying to paint sugar as a color.
The common slip is painting right over the whole bun surface and losing the sugar effect entirely, so if that happens, lift a little color back out with a damp brush before it sets, or add white gouache dots on top once dry to rescue it.
No white gouache on hand works fine too, a white gel pen does the same job with slightly crisper dots.
You Will Need
- white gouache or white gel pen for the sugar flecks

Bridge from the busy kitchen scenes to something quieter: a bakery counter with glass jars of cookies and a brass bell sitting beside the till. Block in the counter line first as a simple horizontal, then the jars as ovals on top, keeping their glass as loose vertical strokes of pale blue rather than anything glossy or detailed.
Paint the cookies inside each jar as small clustered dots and ovals in golden brown and cream, added while the jar wash is still slightly damp so they blend softly rather than sitting on top like stickers. The brass bell gets a single warm gold wash with one tiny white highlight left bare for the shine.
If the jars end up looking flat, add a thin dark line down one side of each to suggest the glass curve, this one small shadow does more than any amount of extra color. A yellow ochre pencil works as a stand in for gold paint if your palette does not have a true metallic.
Keep the bell’s highlight as a tiny dot of bare paper, that single white speck is what sells the shine.
Palette: Golden Brown,Powder Blue,Flour Cream,Yellow Ochre
A striped awning is really just a row of evenly spaced triangles or stripes, so mark the spacing lightly in pencil before you paint a single one, this keeps the whole awning from drifting crooked across the page. Paint alternating stripes in raspberry pink and cream, letting each dry before its neighbor goes in so the colors stay crisp and do not bleed together.
Underneath, place the tray of cinnamon snails as simple spiraled ovals in cinnamon brown, with just a touch of ink line to suggest the coiled shape once the paint is dry. The shop front itself can stay loose and pale, since the striped awning and the pastry tray are the stars here.
If the stripes come out uneven, a straight edge held against the paper while you paint the next one steadies your hand. Masking tape laid down before painting also works well if you want perfectly crisp stripe edges rather than a soft watercolor line.
Try the piece simply at first with just the awning and tray, then add a customer stepping toward the door for a fuller scene.
You Will Need
- masking tape for crisp stripe edges (optional)

A delivery bike loaded with bread crates needs the wheels drawn as true circles first, trace around a coin or small lid if freehand circles feel wobbly, since lopsided wheels are the fastest way to lose this subject. Build the frame and crates on top in simple straight lines, then stack the loaves in the crates as a loose row of golden brown ovals.
Paint the snowy street behind the bike in pale blue-grey, leaving the bike itself mostly in ink line with just a touch of color on the crates and loaves so it stands out against the quieter background. The bakery front can stay soft and out of focus, just a wash of cream and powder blue behind the bike.
If the bike looks like it is floating, add a thin shadow wash directly beneath the wheels to ground it in the snow. Working from a reference photo of a bicycle helps a great deal here if bikes are not a shape you draw often.
Eye level matters: keep the camera roughly at the bike’s own height rather than looking down on it, which makes the scene feel like you are standing right beside it on the street.

A baker’s cat sleeping on flour sacks is a gentle still subject, good for slowing down after busier scenes. Sketch the cat as a simple curled oval shape first, tail wrapped around, then build the flour sacks underneath as soft rounded rectangles that sag slightly under the cat’s weight.
Paint the sacks in warm cream with a faint texture of short dry brush strokes to suggest rough sacking, then let the cat sit on top in a contrasting color, tabby orange or soft grey both work well against the pale sacks. Keep the cat’s edges soft where it meets the sack, since a sleeping animal has no hard outline anywhere on its body.
If the cat ends up looking stiff rather than relaxed, loosen the tail and paw lines with a slightly damp brush to round them off. A dry brush technique, barely any water on the bristles dragged lightly across the sack, is the quickest way to fake rough fabric texture without any real effort.
This one is a nice ten minute piece on its own, or add a second sleepy cat and a sack of flour spilling slightly for a fuller forty minute version.
Palette: Flour Cream,Cinnamon Brown,Payne’s Grey,Burnt Sienna
Look at a photo of a cat curled tight in sleep rather than sitting upright, the tucked in paws and wrapped tail are what make this pose read correctly.
Mother and child choosing pastries at a glass case gives you two simple figures leaning slightly toward the counter, so sketch their postures first, the child a little shorter and leaning further in with curiosity. Keep both as soft silhouettes from behind or the side rather than full faces, which keeps the focus on the moment rather than on getting likenesses right.
Paint the glass case itself as a simple box shape in pale powder blue, with the pastries inside added as small bright dots of raspberry and gold before the glass wash goes over the top, exactly as with the earlier window ideas. The two figures get warmer, darker coats so they sit clearly in front of the cooler case.
If the two figures start blending into one shape, add a thin strip of background color between them to separate their outlines clearly. This scene pairs nicely with other warm indoor moments from this food watercolor illustration list if you want more counter and treat subjects next.
Keep the child noticeably smaller and lower than the adult, that size difference alone tells the whole relationship without any extra detail.
Palette: Powder Blue,Raspberry Pink,Golden Brown,Payne’s Grey
A Paris boulangerie on a snowy corner with a red awning works best painted at an angle rather than straight on, so sketch the building corner first with one wall receding away from you, which gives the whole scene real depth. Place the red awning above the door as the one strong warm note against an otherwise cool, snowy palette.
Paint the building front in soft cream and grey, then drop the awning in as a confident flat wash of warm red before adding the shop name in simple ink lettering once dry. Snow on the ground and rooftops stays as bare paper with just a pale blue-grey shadow wash to shape the drifts.
If the building looks flat, add one darker shadow wash along the side wall that turns away from the viewer, this single value shift does most of the work of suggesting a corner. A ruler helps keep window and door lines straight if a freehand building feels daunting.
For more corner shop fronts in snow, the ideas in this Christmas window drawing list cover similar angled buildings in detail.
Palette: Flour Cream,Payne’s Grey,Raspberry Pink,Powder Blue
A bakery shelf of sourdough loaves in woven proofing baskets is a nice repeating subject, so draw three or four basket shapes first as simple curved bowls, varying their sizes slightly so the row does not feel too uniform. The loaves sit inside as rounded domes, each with a different scoring pattern sketched lightly before paint goes on.
Paint the baskets with short curved dry brush strokes in cinnamon brown to suggest woven texture, working each basket while still a little damp so the strokes stay soft rather than scratchy. The loaves themselves get a warm golden wash with the scoring lines added last in a slightly darker brown once everything else is dry.
If the baskets look too smooth and plain, go back in with a fine liner and add a few short curved lines following the weave direction, just enough to suggest texture without drawing every strand. Swap a flat wash for dry brush strokes anywhere the basket texture feels missing, that one trick carries this whole subject.
Vary the next version by changing the scoring pattern on each loaf, a simple cross, a spiral, or parallel slashes each give a different personality to the same basic shape.
Palette: Cinnamon Brown,Golden Brown,Burnt Sienna,Flour Cream
A baker rolling croissant dough with a long rolling pin is mostly about the angle of the arms, so sketch the figure leaning over a table first, elbows bent and the pin extended across a pale sheet of dough. Keep the dough itself as a simple rectangle of flour cream, slightly uneven at the edges rather than a perfect shape.
Paint the figure’s apron and sleeves in soft grey and white, then add the rolling pin as a confident single stroke of warm wood brown across the dough. The flour dusting on the table goes in last as scattered white gouache dots or simply left as bare paper around the dough’s edges.
If the arms look stiff or the pin seems to float above the dough rather than pressing into it, add a thin shadow line directly under the pin to ground it against the surface. This scene suits a quick ten minute sketch focused just on the hands and pin, or a fuller forty minute version with a shelf of croissants cooling behind.
Keep the dough’s edges a little ragged and uneven, a perfectly straight rectangle looks far less like real dough than one with soft irregular corners.
Palette: Flour Cream,Payne’s Grey,Cinnamon Brown,Titanium White
A cake stand of lemon tarts in a pastel patisserie is a good color study subject, so draw the tiered stand first as two or three simple circles stacked on a central stem, then place the tarts around each tier as small flat circles. The patisserie background can stay very loose, just soft pastel blocks of wall color behind the stand.
Paint the tart shells in pale golden brown first, letting them dry completely before adding the bright lemon curd centers in a clean wash of lemon yellow, this order keeps the yellow vivid rather than muddy. A thin raspberry pink line or small berry on top of one or two tarts adds the accent color the whole palette is built around.
If the yellow centers look flat, drop a slightly deeper gold into the center while the first wash is still wet, letting it bloom outward on its own for a more natural curd texture. No lemon yellow in your set, a warm cadmium yellow with a touch of orange mixed in gets close enough.
Keep the stand itself in cool grey or white so the warm tarts have something calm to sit against.
Palette: Lemon Yellow,Golden Brown,Raspberry Pink,Powder Blue
A paper bag of warm buns handed across the counter is a close up, intimate little scene, so sketch two hands first, one offering the bag and one receiving it, keeping fingers simple and slightly rounded rather than overly detailed. The bag itself is a soft rectangle with the top folded over, buns just visible peeking out.
Paint the bag in warm cream with a faint brown shadow along its folds, then add the visible buns inside as small golden domes before the bag’s top edge is drawn in with ink to hold the shape together. Hands can stay a soft skin tone wash with minimal shading, just enough to suggest form.
If the hands look awkward, simplify them further into basic mitten-like shapes rather than trying to draw individual fingers in full detail, which almost always reads better at this scale. A warm granulating brown, one that separates into texture as it dries, gives the paper bag a lovely natural grain with very little effort.
Try this one small and tight, cropped close on just the hands and bag, for a quick and satisfying single sitting piece.
Palette: Flour Cream,Cinnamon Brown,Golden Brown,Raw Umber
A tiny village bakery with a snowy bench outside the door is a quiet, whole-building scene, so block in the simple shop shape first, a door, one or two windows, and a sloped roof catching snow along its edge. Place the bench to one side of the door, drawn as a few straight lines, with a soft mound of snow settled along its seat.
Paint the building in warm cream and soft brown, then leave the bench and roofline snow as bare paper, adding only a pale blue-grey shadow beneath the snow mounds to give them form. A single warm light in the window is a nice touch, painted last as a small glowing square of golden yellow against the cooler building tones.
If the building looks too plain, add one small detail like a hanging sign or a wreath on the door rather than crowding the whole scene, a single accent reads better than several competing ones. For more small snowy shop fronts like this, the Christmas village painting ideas offer a good next stop.
Keep the snow shadows cool and the window light warm, that contrast alone makes the whole scene feel properly wintry.
Palette: Flour Cream,Powder Blue,Golden Brown,Payne’s Grey
A young baker piping cream into choux buns needs the piping bag drawn as a simple cone shape first, held at an angle with a thin line showing the cream flowing out. Sketch the choux buns themselves as small uneven domes lined up on a tray below, each one slightly different in size since handmade pastries never match perfectly.
Paint the baker’s hands and apron in soft tones first, then add the cream as a bright white or pale cream squiggle emerging from the piping bag tip, best done with a slightly thicker paint mix or a touch of white gouache so it sits visibly on top of the bun. Let the tray and buns dry before this final cream detail goes in, or the two will blend into a mess.
If the piped cream looks flat, add a tiny curved shadow line beneath each swirl to give it some roundness and lift off the bun’s surface. A toothpick dipped in white gouache gives a nice thin controlled line for the cream if a brush tip feels too broad.
Once this one works, vary it next time by piping chocolate ganache instead, swapping the white cream for a rich dark brown changes the whole mood of the tray.
You Will Need
- white gouache for the piped cream detail
Palette: Flour Cream,Payne’s Grey,Titanium White,Golden Brown
A woman eating a cinnamon roll in a bakery cafe corner is a cozy, still moment, so sketch her seated at a small table first, shoulders relaxed, one hand holding a fork or the roll itself. Keep the cafe corner simple, a window behind her, a cup of coffee beside the plate, nothing more cluttering the space.
Paint the cinnamon roll itself with its spiral clearly visible, warm cinnamon brown swirled through a paler dough color, added before you paint her or the table so the roll’s color stays the brightest, most tempting part of the page. Her clothing and the cafe background stay in quieter, cooler tones so the roll remains the clear focal point.
If the spiral in the roll looks muddled, use a fine liner once the paint is dry to trace one clean curving line through the center, which instantly reads as the cinnamon swirl even if the paint underneath is loose. This is a nice piece to pair with the counter scenes in the cupcake drawing list if you enjoy this kind of cozy treat subject.
Keep her pose relaxed and slightly slouched rather than upright and formal, that small detail is what makes the scene feel like an actual quiet moment rather than a staged one.
Palette: Cinnamon Brown,Flour Cream,Payne’s Grey,Powder Blue
A cardamom bun pulled apart to show its twisty layers is a close, single-object study, good for practicing texture without a whole scene around it. Sketch the bun as two halves slightly separated, with wavy lines through the middle showing the twisted dough layers pulling apart from each other.
Paint the outer crust first in golden brown, then work into the twisted interior with thinner lines of cinnamon and cream alternating along the curve of each layer, following the direction the dough would actually twist. Sugar crystals on top can be left as tiny dots of bare paper or added with a white gel pen once the rest is dry.
If the twisted layers look flat or confusing, simplify to three or four clear lines rather than trying to paint every strand of dough, fewer confident lines read better than many messy ones. A fine liner traced along the twist lines after the paint dries helps separate the layers clearly if the watercolor alone feels too soft.
Today’s tip: let the crust wash dry completely before painting the interior swirls, working wet into wet here just turns the whole bun into one brown blob.
You Will Need
- white gel pen for sugar crystals (optional)
Palette: Golden Brown,Cinnamon Brown,Flour Cream,Raw Umber
A bakery at dawn with lights on and snow falling on the street is a mood piece built on contrast, so lay in the dark, cool street and sky first with a broad wash, leaving the window shapes as untouched paper until that background dries completely. The lit windows are the whole point here, a warm glow against a cold blue world.
Once the background is dry, paint the window glow in golden yellow and warm orange, letting the color bleed very slightly at the edges into the surrounding dark wash for a soft halo effect rather than a hard-edged square of light. Snowflakes go in last, flicked from a loaded brush or dotted with a white gel pen across the whole scene, falling over both the dark sky and the lit windows equally.
If the glow looks too contained and flat, wet the edge of the window shape slightly before adding the yellow so it blooms outward naturally into the dark. A toothbrush loaded with thin white paint and flicked with a thumb gives a nice scattered snow effect if dotting by hand feels slow.
Keep the color contrast strong, warm glow against cool dark, that single choice carries the whole mood of this piece.
You Will Need
- old toothbrush for flicked snow texture (optional)
- white gel pen for snowflakes
Palette: Payne’s Grey,Golden Brown,Powder Blue,Titanium White
A pastry chef lining up pink macarons on a marble counter is a clean, orderly scene after the looser dawn piece, so sketch a straight row of small circles first, evenly spaced along a marble counter edge. The chef’s hands can enter the frame from one side, placing or adjusting the last macaron in the row.
Paint the marble counter in cool grey with a few loose veined lines dragged through while still damp, then add the macarons in a confident raspberry pink wash, each one with a tiny shadow beneath to lift it slightly off the surface. Keep the chef’s hands and sleeve simple and pale so they do not compete with the bright pink row.
If the marble veining looks too busy, fewer lines placed with more space between them always look more convincing than many close together. A fine liner or a dry brush dragged lightly over the marble, once the base wash is dry, adds a crisp vein or two without overworking the surface.
Quick version: paint just the row of macarons and a sliver of counter in ten minutes, or extend the marble and add the chef’s full arm and a tray for a fuller piece.
Palette: Raspberry Pink,Payne’s Grey,Flour Cream,Titanium White
An old man buying his morning loaf with exact coins is a small, dignified moment, so sketch his figure first, slightly stooped, one hand extended with coins placed carefully on the counter rather than dropped. Keep his coat and hat in muted, worn colors, since this is a scene about routine and familiarity rather than anything bright or festive.
Paint the loaf itself as the warmest, most inviting shape in the scene, golden brown against his quieter palette, placed on the counter between his hand and the baker’s. The coins can stay as tiny bare circles of paper with just a thin grey outline in ink, small enough that detail is not needed.
If his posture looks too stiff, round the shoulders a little more and tilt the head slightly downward toward the coins, which instantly reads as someone counting carefully rather than standing formally. Eye level matters here: keep the viewpoint roughly at counter height, looking slightly up at him, which gives the moment a gentle, respectful feel rather than looking down on the scene.
Keep his coat color muted and let the loaf be the one warm, saturated note in the whole piece.
Palette: Payne’s Grey,Golden Brown,Flour Cream,Raw Umber
A bakery window with a tiered cake and frost on the glass combines two earlier tricks from this list, the steamed glass effect and a careful layered object, so paint the window wash first in pale cream and blue before any cake detail goes in. Let that dry fully, since the frost pattern you add next needs a dry surface to sit on top of cleanly.
Sketch the tiered cake as three stacked circles, smaller toward the top, then paint each tier in soft white or pale pastel with a thin raspberry pink line or small flowers decorating the top tier only, keeping the lower tiers plainer so the eye travels upward naturally. Frost on the glass goes in last as white gouache flicked or dragged in short diagonal strokes across the corners of the window, never covering the cake itself.
If the frost pattern looks too neat or mechanical, vary the stroke direction and length randomly rather than keeping them all parallel, real frost never grows in a tidy grid. A dry, stiff brush loaded lightly with white gouache gives a nice scratchy frost texture if a fine liner feels too smooth for this effect.
Keep the frost confined to the window edges and corners so the cake in the center stays the clear star of the piece.
You Will Need
- white gouache for the frost texture
Palette: Powder Blue,Flour Cream,Raspberry Pink,Titanium White
A Portuguese bakery with custard tarts lined up in rows is a satisfying pattern piece, so sketch the tarts as a simple grid of small circles first, keeping the spacing even with light pencil guides before any paint goes on. Each tart gets a pale golden pastry shell, painted first and left to dry completely before the custard centers go in.
Paint the custard centers in warm golden brown with a few small darker caramelized spots dabbed on top while still slightly damp, which is exactly how these tarts look fresh from the oven. The tray or counter beneath can stay simple and pale so the warm rows of tarts hold all the visual weight.
If the caramelized spots look too uniform, vary their placement and size slightly from tart to tart, real baking never comes out perfectly identical and a little variation actually makes the row more convincing. A small round brush dipped in a dark warm brown and dabbed rather than stroked gives the most natural scorched spot texture.
For more rows and patterns of small sweet treats, the food watercolor illustration list has several similar subjects to try next.
Palette: Golden Brown,Flour Cream,Burnt Sienna,Raw Umber
A donut shop counter with sprinkled donuts and a queue brings back the line of customers from earlier in the list, but this time the real color show happens on the counter itself. Sketch a row of donuts first as simple rings, then the queue of customers behind them as soft, slightly smaller shapes further back in the scene.
Paint the donuts in a cheerful mix of raspberry pink glaze and plain golden ones for contrast, adding sprinkles last as tiny flicked dots of white gouache or a scattering of different small colored dots once the glaze has dried. The queue behind stays in quieter, cooler tones so the bright donut row remains the clear focal point of the page.
If the sprinkles end up looking too neat and evenly spaced, flick them from a loaded brush with a flick of the wrist rather than placing each one carefully, the resulting randomness reads far more convincingly as sprinkles. A toothbrush works nicely here too for a finer, more scattered sprinkle effect across several donuts at once.
Keep the queue simple and blurred so it never competes with the donuts for attention.
You Will Need
- old toothbrush for sprinkle texture (optional)
Palette: Raspberry Pink,Golden Brown,Powder Blue,Titanium White
A child carrying a pink cake box carefully through the snow is a small action pose, so sketch the child slightly bent forward, both hands wrapped carefully around the box, with small careful steps suggested through the angle of the legs. Keep the box itself as the brightest shape in the whole scene, a confident raspberry pink rectangle with a thin ribbon line across the top.
Paint the snowy street behind in pale, cool washes, leaving plenty of bare paper for fallen snow, then add the child’s coat and hat in a muted color so the pink box truly pops against everything around it. Footprints trailing behind in the snow, just a few simple dark ovals, add a nice sense of the journey already made.
If the child’s pose looks stiff, angle the head down slightly toward the box as though checking it carefully with each step, that small tilt instantly reads as careful concentration. This scene pairs nicely with other snowy figure moments found in the Christmas scene drawing list if you want more figures in snow.
Keep the ribbon on the box as one single confident ink line, too much detail there competes with the simple, clear pink shape beneath it.
Palette: Raspberry Pink,Powder Blue,Payne’s Grey,Flour Cream
A baker propping the door open as steam rolls out is a wonderful contrast piece between hard architecture and soft atmosphere, so draw the doorway and the baker’s figure first in simple confident lines, one arm holding the door, body angled slightly outward into the cold. The steam itself is the real subject though, so leave it for last.
Paint the baker and the doorway in solid, readable color first, warm interior glow behind them against the cooler street outside. Once that is completely dry, add the steam as a very wet, loose wash of pale grey-blue dragged upward and outward from the doorway, letting the water do most of the work in creating soft, drifting edges.
If the steam looks too solid or cloud-like rather than wispy, thin your paint mixture further and work faster before it has a chance to set, steam needs to look like it is already dissolving into the cold air. A clean, barely damp brush dragged through the wet steam wash can pull soft trailing wisps outward if the first attempt looks too contained.
Today’s tip: paint the steam last, wet and loose, directly over the dry background rather than trying to plan around it from the start.
Palette: Payne’s Grey,Golden Brown,Powder Blue,Flour Cream
A Japanese bakery with melon pan and fluffy milk bread brings a different texture challenge, so sketch the melon pan’s domed shape first with its signature crosshatch pattern lightly marked in pencil before any paint goes down. The milk bread loaves sit beside it as soft, rounded rectangular shapes with a noticeably paler, puffier look than the denser breads earlier in this list.
Paint the milk bread first in the palest cream wash, almost white, since its whole character comes from looking impossibly soft and light. The melon pan gets a warmer golden wash with the crosshatch lines added once dry using a fine liner or a darker brown paint, following the curve of the dome rather than a flat grid so the pattern wraps convincingly around the shape.
If the crosshatch lines look too flat and grid-like, curve each line slightly to follow the dome’s surface, straight lines on a round object always look wrong no matter how neatly spaced they are. A ruling pen or a very fine liner gives the crispest crosshatch if a regular brush tip feels too thick for this detail.
Vary this one next time with a matcha flavored melon pan, swapping the warm gold for a soft green changes the whole feel of the piece.
Palette: Flour Cream,Golden Brown,Titanium White,Raw Umber
Two bakers laughing while shaping pretzels at a long table is the busiest figure scene on this list, so sketch both bodies first in loose, relaxed poses, one leaning slightly toward the other, before adding a single pretzel shape mid-twist on the table between them. Keep their faces simple, a curved line for a smile is enough to suggest the laughter without needing detailed expressions.
Paint the pretzels themselves in warm golden brown, twisted into their classic shape, with a scatter of coarse salt left as tiny dots of bare paper or dabbed white gouache once the dough color has dried. The two figures can share a similar apron color to feel like a team, with just enough variation in hair or hat color to tell them apart at a glance.
If the two figures feel disconnected from each other, angle both bodies slightly toward the same point on the table, a shared focus instantly makes a scene of two people feel like one moment rather than two separate figures. A long rectangle of pale wood brown behind them grounds the whole table convincingly.
Keep the pretzel’s twist as one continuous curving line rather than several separate strokes, that single unbroken line is what makes the classic pretzel shape instantly recognizable.
You Will Need
- white gouache for salt flecks (optional)
Palette: Golden Brown,Payne’s Grey,Flour Cream,Titanium White
A girl in a red hat eating a croissant on the bakery step is a simple, charming single figure, so sketch her seated casually on a step first, knees drawn up slightly, croissant held close to her mouth. The red hat is the one bold color note planned from the very start, so leave it as bare paper until you are ready to paint it in one confident, solid wash.
Paint the croissant in warm golden brown with a few curved darker lines following its layered shape, then build her coat and the stone step in cooler, quieter tones around her so the red hat and golden croissant both stand out clearly. Her face can stay very simple, a hint of a smile is enough for this kind of cozy, candid moment.
If the red hat color looks flat next to everything else, deepen the shadow side of the hat slightly with a touch of the same raspberry pink used elsewhere in your palette, tying this piece back to the rest of the series. A round brush loaded fully for the hat and a drier brush for the step texture is an easy swap if your only brush is one size.
Keep the hat as the single boldest color on the page, everything else should feel a shade quieter by comparison.
Palette: Raspberry Pink,Golden Brown,Payne’s Grey,Flour Cream
A bakery kitchen with racks of cooling cinnamon buns gives you a chance to paint repeating shapes at an angle, so sketch two or three wire racks receding slightly into the distance, each holding a row of bun shapes, closer buns drawn larger than those further back to suggest depth. This simple size change does most of the work of making the kitchen feel three dimensional.
Paint the buns in warm cinnamon brown with their characteristic spiral visible on top, working the closest rack first in full color and detail, then letting the further racks fade slightly paler and softer to push them back into the scene. The wire racks themselves can stay as thin ink lines over a very pale grey wash.
If the depth feels flat despite the size change, cool down the color slightly on the furthest buns, warm colors appear to come forward and cool ones recede, so a slightly bluer cinnamon in the background rack strengthens the sense of distance. A ruler laid at an angle helps keep the receding rack lines consistent if freehand perspective feels tricky.
Keep the nearest rack the most detailed and the furthest the softest, that contrast alone carries the whole sense of a deep kitchen space.

A bakery counter heaped with cream-filled semla buns in February closes this list with the richest texture of the whole series, so sketch a generous pile of buns first, each one a simple dusted dome with a smaller cap balanced on top, slightly tilted so the whole pile feels natural rather than stacked too neatly. A light dusting of pencil guides for the cream peeking from the sides keeps the shapes from running together.
Paint the dusted sugar tops as bare paper left untouched, exactly as in the earlier powdered sugar idea, while the cream filling gets a thick, slightly textured white wash with soft grey shadow beneath each dollop to lift it off the bun. The cardamom spiced dough underneath is painted in warm cinnamon brown, added first so the white cream and sugar sit clearly on top once dry.
If the pile looks flat or the buns blend together, add one small cast shadow beneath each bun onto the one below it, that single shadow line separates the pile into clearly readable individual buns. White gouache thickened slightly with less water gives the cream a nice raised, dimensional look if a thin watercolor wash feels too flat for this final, richest subject on the list.
Finish the whole set with this one: let the white cream stay the boldest, lightest note on the page, everything else in the pile should sit a shade warmer and darker in comparison.

What to Do Next
Pick whichever idea pulled at you most as you scrolled, a cold press pad and your usual watercolor set are all you need to start today. Sketch the simple shapes first, keep the lightest areas as bare paper for as long as you can, and let the steam, snow or sugar do its work last.
Frequently Asked Questions
What watercolor paper works best for bakery illustration scenes with lots of steam and snow?
Cold press paper around 140lb handles the wet, loose washes steam and snow effects need without buckling too much. Its slight texture also helps soften edges naturally, which suits this cozy, atmospheric subject better than a smooth hot press surface.
How do I keep my bakery window scenes from looking too flat?
Paint the glass wash before any detail behind it and let it dry completely first. Adding a shadow or two along one receding wall, plus a warm light source against a cooler background, gives even a simple shop front real depth.
Do I need special paint colors for this cozy winter bakery palette?
No special paints are required, just a warm cinnamon brown, a soft powder blue, a cream or flour tone and one raspberry pink for accents. Most basic watercolor sets already include close equivalents to mix from.
How do I draw people in a bakery scene if figures are not my strong point?
Simplify bodies into soft ovals and cones rather than detailed anatomy, letting coats, aprons and hats carry most of the visual interest. A slight lean or tilt of the head tells the story far more than a carefully rendered face.
What is the easiest bakery illustration idea to start with as a beginner?
A single paper bag of warm buns handed across a counter is the simplest starting point on this list. It needs only two simple hands and one soft shape, with no building, crowd or full figure to manage.
