28 Birds Drawing Ideas of Backyard Feeders, Birdhouses and Snowy Fence Posts

18

A birds drawing session is the easiest way to spend an hour with colored pencils and come away with something you actually want to pin on the fridge. Small backyard birds are forgiving subjects: round bodies, simple shapes, and all that fluffed-up winter plumage hides any wobbly line you might make along the way.

Below you will find 28 ideas built around feeders, birdhouses, snowy fence posts and garden branches, starting with the simplest poses and working up to busier little scenes. Pick whichever chickadee, wren or cardinal catches your eye first and keep your pencils sharp, because these birds reward a careful point.

Start with a chickadee, since its round body and oversized head make it the friendliest bird to draw first. Block in a soft circle for the body and a smaller circle for the head, then flip the feet upward so the bird hangs from the feeder’s perch, gripping with tiny curved claws.

Work the black cap and bib first in short, close hatching strokes, leaving a bright white patch on the cheek completely untouched. Layer soft grey over the wings and back, then add the feeder as a few straight pencil lines and a scatter of seed shapes, so the bird stays the star of the page.

Measure before you commit: the head should be roughly the same width as the body, and the feet sit no wider than the head. If the proportions look off once it is upside down, a kneaded eraser lifts the graphite guideline cleanly without smudging your color.

If you do not have a grey pencil, layer blue and black lightly together for a cooler shadow tone. Keep the feeder simple so the chickadee’s black and white pattern carries the whole drawing.

Move next to a wren peeking out of a wooden birdhouse, a pose that lets you practice drawing just the front half of a bird. Sketch the round birdhouse opening first, then fit the wren’s head and shoulders into the hole as if it is leaning out to check the weather.

Build the wren’s warm brown feathers with short curved strokes that follow the direction of growth, from the crown down toward the tail, and keep its beak as one thin dark line. Cap the birdhouse roof with bare white paper pressed only at the very edge with pale blue grey, so it reads as a thin layer of snow rather than a solid block.

Light matters here: decide where the sun sits, then shade the side of the roof and the inside of the doorway away from it with a deeper grey, leaving the snow cap and the wren’s chest catching the brightest light. That one shadow choice is what makes the birdhouse look round instead of flat.

No brown pencil on hand works fine too; mix burnt orange under a thin layer of grey for a convincing wren color. Finish with a few white gel pen dots on the roof for sparkle.

Line up three sparrows along a snowy fence post next, a composition that teaches you to repeat a shape with small variation instead of drawing the same bird three times. Draw the fence post first as a simple cylinder with a flat snow cap, then place the sparrows at slightly different heights and head angles so the row feels natural rather than stamped.

Sketch each sparrow as two overlapping ovals, build the streaky brown back with diagonal hatching, and keep the belly a soft cream left mostly bare. Turn one head to the side and one forward so the group reads as individuals glancing around rather than a lineup.

Compare sizes as you go: all three sparrows should measure close to the same body length, even though their poses differ, or the row will look mismatched. Use light pencil marks to check that each bird’s feet line up with the top edge of the post before you add any color.

Short on a true cream pencil, leave the belly as plain white paper and let that contrast carry the shape. A thin strip of pale blue grey under the post reads as its cast shadow on snow.

Palette: Warm Brown,Cream,Soft Grey,Icy Blue

Give yourself one of your two cardinals here, sharing a branch with its softer brown mate. Sketch the branch first as a gentle diagonal with a ridge of snow along its top edge, then build both bird bodies as plump ovals perched close together near the center.

Layer the male cardinal’s cherry red in several thin passes rather than one heavy one, so the strokes stay visible and the color stays clean, then add his black mask with a sharp point. Work the female in warm olive brown with a touch of red only at her crest and wingtips, so she reads as his quieter counterpart rather than a second copy of him.

This pair works best with a quick ten-minute version: two simple round bodies, red and brown blocked in fast, snow added as bare paper with a thin grey shadow line. Give it forty minutes instead and you can add individual feather strokes on the wings, fine crosshatching on the branch bark, and a few stray snowflakes drifting past.

Keep a sharp pencil point for the cherry red layers, since a dull tip flattens the color fast.

Palette: Cherry Red,Black,Olive Brown,Soft Grey

Look at reference photos for how a cardinal’s crest points backward, not straight up, since that small angle is what makes the silhouette instantly recognizable.

Try a nuthatch next, the only backyard bird that walks face-first down a tree trunk, which makes for a genuinely different pose on the page. Draw the trunk first as a tall vertical shape with rough bark texture in short dark strokes, then place the nuthatch partway down with its head pointed toward the ground and tail flicked up behind it.

Shape its body as a short wedge, blue grey on top and warm rust underneath, with a black stripe running through the eye like a tiny mask. Keep the bark texture loose and irregular rather than a neat grid, since real bark never repeats evenly, and leave patches of white paper showing through as a dusting of snow caught in the ridges.

The trunk’s edges are where this drawing can go wrong: too hard an outline flattens the bark instantly. Soften the edge with a paper blending stump or your finger, then press a kneaded eraser into the surface to lift little flecks of white back out for texture.

No blending stump at home, a cotton swab does nearly the same job on colored pencil.

Move down to the ground for a dark-eyed junco hopping through fresh snow beneath a feeder. Start with the junco’s body as a simple dark oval, nearly all slate grey except for a crisp white belly and a pale pink beak, then angle the legs mid-hop so one foot lifts just off the snow.

Build the slate grey with even, confident hatching so the bird reads as a solid, almost silhouette-like shape against the white page, which is exactly the contrast that makes juncos distinctive. Scatter a few scattered seeds from the feeder above to explain why the bird is there, keeping them as small simple ovals rather than tiny fussy details.

For the quick version, this bird takes about ten minutes: one grey oval, a white belly patch, two thin legs. Given forty minutes, add a trail of small footprint marks behind it in the snow and a soft grey cast shadow beneath its body to ground it on the page.

Keep your darkest grey reserved for the head and back, or the junco will lose its crisp white-and-slate contrast.

Palette: Slate Grey,White,Soft Pink,Icy Blue

Give your next chickadee a little action by having it hold a single sunflower seed in its beak. Draw the head first at a slight tilt, since a seed in the beak naturally pulls the head down and forward, then build the body below it in the same soft rounded shape as your earlier chickadee.

Keep the seed tiny and simple, just a narrow grey oval with a faint stripe, gripped at the very tip of the black beak. This small prop does a lot of storytelling work without needing any extra detail, so resist the urge to overwork it.

If the head and seed start to look pasted together, check that the beak’s angle matches the direction the head is tilted. A head tilted down needs a beak pointing down too, or the seed will look like it is floating beside the bird rather than held by it.

No fine-point pencil for that seed stripe, the sharp edge of a white gel pen laid over grey pencil makes a clean enough line instead.

Bring in a blue jay for a bigger, bolder bird with real motion in its pose. Sketch the platform feeder as a flat rectangle scattered with whole peanuts, then draw the jay mid-landing with wings spread wide and feet reaching down toward the platform rather than already folded and still.

Layer the blue in bands, since a jay’s wing has distinct dark blue, white and black barring rather than one solid color, and that banding is what gives the wing its structure. Keep the crest raised and pointed, a quick shorthand that instantly reads as alert and in motion.

Spread wings are where proportion often slips: measure the wingspan against the jay’s body length, since it typically reaches wider than the bird is long. Sketch both wings as simple triangles first and check that measurement before adding any feather detail.

If true jay blue feels too intense from your set, layer a lighter sky blue under a thin pass of deeper blue for the same effect with softer saturation.

Palette: Jay Blue,White,Black,Warm Brown

Try a downy woodpecker clinging sideways to a suet feeder next, which is a good pose for practicing a bird gripping a vertical surface rather than perched flat. Draw the feeder cage first as a simple grid of thin lines holding a square suet cake, then place the woodpecker’s small body against it with its tail pressed flat for balance, exactly as real woodpeckers brace themselves.

Keep its pattern crisp: black and white barred wings, a plain white belly, and on the male a small red patch at the back of the head that you can leave off entirely for a female. The beak does the real work here, so draw it as a short straight chisel shape rather than a curved point.

Texture is the trick with suet: stipple small dots and short dashes in cream and grey rather than smooth shading, so the cake reads as crumbly rather than solid. A few loose dots can scatter below it on the snow where the bird has been pecking.

If red pencil is not in your set, skip the head patch and draw a female downy instead, equally common at feeders.

Palette: Black,White,Cherry Red,Cream

Draw a wren puffed into a near-perfect ball on a thin frosty twig for one of the simplest shapes on this whole list. Start with one plump circle for the entire body, tucking the head in close with almost no visible neck, and let the tail point up at a jaunty angle, since wrens hold theirs cocked rather than flat.

Hatch the warm brown feathers in short curved strokes that all follow the round shape of the body, radiating slightly outward like the fur on a ball of yarn. Keep the twig thin and spare, just two or three confident lines with tiny flecks of frost drawn in white gel pen.

This one is quick: ten minutes gets you the puffed circle, the cocked tail and a bare twig. Forty minutes lets you add fine barring across the wings and tail, individual frost crystals along the twig, and a soft grey shadow beneath the bird’s feet.

Round shapes like this hide uneven linework well, so it is a forgiving place to practice confident, unbroken pencil strokes.

Give two chickadees a heated birdbath with steam rising for a drawing that mixes birds with a bit of atmosphere. Draw the birdbath bowl first as a wide shallow oval, then place one chickadee standing at the rim and the other mid-splash with wings slightly lifted and water droplets flicked outward.

Build the steam with loose, open curves in very pale grey, barely pressing the pencil at all, since steam reads best as something almost not there rather than a solid cloud. Keep the water in the bowl a flat icy blue with a few short white gel pen streaks for ripples around the splashing bird.

The splash is the part most likely to look stiff: keep the lifted wing loose and slightly blurred at the tip rather than sharply outlined, which suggests motion far better than a crisp edge would. A light touch with a blending stump along that wing edge helps too.

No pale grey pencil on hand, a very light touch with your regular grey works the same if you barely bear down.

Add a human touch with a titmouse taking a seed from an outstretched mittened hand. Draw the mitten first as a simple rounded shape in a bold knitted color, then position the titmouse perched right at its fingertips, body angled toward the seed held there, wings tucked close.

Shape the titmouse with its distinctive soft grey crest standing up at the back of the head, a small black mask around the eye, and a peachy wash along its flanks. Keep the mitten’s knit pattern simple, just a few rows of short diagonal dashes, so it supports the bird rather than competing with it for attention.

Eye level matters in this one: draw the hand and bird from slightly below, looking up, and the whole scene feels more like a real moment of trust rather than a flat diagram. Tilt the mitten’s opening toward the viewer slightly to support that same angle.

If knitted mitten texture feels fussy, a plain solid mitten in cherry red works just as well and keeps the focus on the bird.

Palette: Soft Grey,Black,Peach,Cherry Red

Draw a small flock of goldfinches in their duller winter colors clustered on a thistle sock feeder. Sketch the feeder first as a tall narrow mesh tube, then place three or four goldfinches at different heights along it, some upright and some hanging slightly sideways as they feed.

Winter goldfinches lose their bright summer yellow, so build them instead in soft olive and warm grey, with just a hint of pale yellow lingering at the throat. This muted palette is actually the more interesting challenge here, since the birds need to read as goldfinches through shape alone rather than color.

Vary this flock next time by drawing the same birds in spring plumage instead, swapping the olive and grey for bright lemon yellow and black, which makes a nice companion piece using the exact same poses.

If your pencil set lacks a true olive, layer yellow under a light green for a close match.

Palette: Olive,Warm Grey,Pale Yellow,Black

Place a single sparrow tucked under the little overhanging roof of a birdhouse, sheltered from falling snow. Draw the roof first as a simple peaked triangle with a thick cap of snow along its top edge, then tuck the sparrow’s body just beneath the overhang, feathers fluffed against the cold.

This is a good subject for practicing light hatching, since the roof casts the sparrow into soft shadow even though it is not actually in darkness. Build that effect with a thin layer of cool grey over the bird’s usual brown tones, rather than using pure black, which would read as nighttime instead of shade.

If the shaded area starts to look muddy, step back and check your layers are light and even rather than scribbled, since colored pencil shadow works best built slowly in several thin passes. A kneaded eraser can lift back any patch that got too heavy.

Snow falling past the roof can be left as tiny unmarked circles of bare paper, no drawing needed at all.

Perch a house finch on the top rail of a snowy garden gate for a drawing that pairs a bird with a bit of simple structure. Draw the gate first as a few straight and crossed lines with a thin ridge of snow balanced along the top rail, then set the finch right at the highest point, body angled slightly to one side.

Male house finches carry warm raspberry red across the head and chest fading into streaky brown toward the tail, so layer the red first in light strokes, then work the brown streaking over the lower body with short vertical dashes. Keep the gate itself loose and unfussy, since a tightly ruled, perfectly straight gate will fight with the softness of the bird.

If the red to brown transition looks like two separate colors stuck together, blend a small strip where they meet using both pencils lightly layered over each other rather than a hard line.

No raspberry red in your set, warm pink layered under cherry red gets close enough for a backyard finch.

Palette: Raspberry,Warm Brown,Cream,Icy Blue

Set a chickadee on top of a snowy mailbox, a familiar bit of garden furniture that gives the drawing an easy sense of place. Draw the mailbox first as a simple rounded rectangle with a flag on one side, cap it with a thick dome of snow, then perch the chickadee right at the highest point of that snow cap.

Build the mailbox in a muted color, faded red or weathered green work well, so it stays secondary to the bird. Keep the chickadee’s familiar black cap and bib strong and crisp against the pale snow dome, since that contrast is what pulls the eye straight to the bird first.

Checking proportion here is simple: the chickadee’s body should look small against the mailbox, roughly a third of its height, which keeps the whole scene feeling true to scale rather than cartoonish.

If weathered green is not in your set, a faded grey blue mailbox works just as well and pairs nicely with the icy palette.

Palette: Faded Red,Black,Icy Blue,White

Settle a mourning dove into a fluffed-up ball on a snowy porch railing next, a larger and softer bird than most on this list. Draw the railing first as a plain horizontal bar with a thin snow line along its top, then build the dove as one large smooth oval with barely any neck showing, since a cold dove tucks its head in close.

Keep the color palette quiet: soft fawn grey across the body, a faint pink blush at the throat, and a small dark eye set low on the rounded head. Resist adding much feather detail on the body itself, since mourning doves look smooth and soft rather than textured, and too much hatching will fight that softness.

From eye level straight on, this bird reads as almost perfectly round, which can look static. Try drawing it from slightly below instead, looking up at the railing, so the dove’s shape tapers more interestingly against the sky behind it.

If fawn grey is not available, mix a little warm brown into your regular grey for the same muted tone.

Palette: Fawn Grey,Soft Pink,Black,Icy Blue

Draw a wren perched on the handle of a shovel left stuck upright in a snowbank, a composition with a nice bit of garden storytelling built right in. Sketch the shovel first with its blade buried in a mound of snow and the handle rising at a slight diagonal, then place the wren right at the very top of that handle, feet gripping the narrow wood.

Build the wren in the same warm brown as its earlier appearance on this list, short curved strokes following the body’s shape, tail cocked up behind it. Keep the shovel handle a plain warm wood tone with a few short dark lines suggesting grain, and let the metal blade stay mostly bare white paper with just a thin grey edge.

A perched bird on a narrow perch often looks like it is floating if the feet are not anchored properly: draw the toes wrapping slightly around both sides of the handle, not just resting flat on top, to fix that instantly.

No warm wood pencil on hand, layer yellow ochre under a touch of brown for a close match.

Palette: Warm Brown,Wood Tone,Soft Grey,Icy Blue

Try a feeder shaped like a tiny cottage with a small bird peeking from each of its windows, a fun change of pace that is more architecture than anatomy. Draw the cottage shape first, a simple square body with a peaked roof and two or three little window openings cut into the front, then tuck a different small bird’s head into each window, just enough showing to identify it.

Give the roof a thick snow cap in bare white paper edged with pale blue grey shadow, and color the cottage walls in a soft faded color like dusty blue or pale yellow, keeping the whole structure simple so it reads clearly at a small scale. Vary the bird at each window, perhaps a chickadee, a sparrow and a junco, so the piece feels like a little community rather than three copies of the same head.

This is the kind of subject worth trying again larger next time, maybe as a full scene with birds also perched on the roof and ground nearby, once the basic cottage shape feels comfortable.

If cutting clean window shapes freehand feels tricky, trace around a coin or a small lid for perfectly round openings instead.

You Will Need

• small coin or lid to trace circles

Palette: Dusty Blue,Black,Warm Brown,Icy Blue

Pair a nuthatch and a chickadee sharing one tube feeder for practice drawing two different bird shapes side by side without one overwhelming the other. Draw the feeder first as a simple vertical tube with two perches at different heights, then place the nuthatch head-down on the upper perch and the chickadee upright on the lower one, so their two distinct postures contrast clearly.

Keep the nuthatch’s blue grey and rust coloring compact and tidy, and the chickadee’s black cap and white cheek bold beside it, using the feeder’s straight lines to separate the two birds visually even though they share the same perch. A thin line of seed spilling from the feeder’s base ties the whole composition together.

Getting two birds of different sizes right next to each other is where scale often slips: measure the chickadee’s body against the nuthatch’s before adding color, since they are close in size but the nuthatch reads slightly longer and leaner.

If you would rather simplify, draw just one bird at a time first and only combine them once each feels confident on its own.

Palette: Blue Grey,Rust,Black,White

Draw a junco mid-stride across a snow-covered picnic table, leaving a neat trail of tiny footprints behind it. Sketch the tabletop first as a simple flat rectangle in perspective, tilted slightly so you can see its surface, covered in an even layer of bare white paper for snow, then place the junco walking across it toward one corner.

Build the footprint trail with small simple marks, just a few short lines fanning out at each point, spaced evenly to suggest a steady walking pace rather than a scattered mess. Keep the junco itself in its familiar slate grey and white, small against the wide flat table so the scene reads as a quiet, large expanse of snow.

Drawing the tabletop at a convincing angle is the trickiest part: pick an eye level low and slightly to one side, so the far edge of the table appears shorter than the near edge, which instantly creates the sense of looking across a flat surface rather than straight at a wall.

If perspective feels tricky, a very simple trick is to lightly rule two faint guideline rectangles before inking in the final tabletop shape.

Palette: Slate Grey,White,Warm Brown,Icy Blue

Perch a chickadee on the icy rim of a frozen birdbath for a quieter, stiller companion to the splashing bathers drawn earlier. Draw the birdbath bowl first as a wide shallow oval, filled not with water this time but with a smooth sheet of pale icy blue to suggest solid ice, then set the chickadee right at the rim, feet gripping the frosted edge.

Keep the ice surface simple, just a flat wash of cool blue with a few thin white gel pen cracks scratched across it, since too much detail there will compete with the bird. Build the chickadee in its usual crisp black, white and grey, standing tall and alert rather than hunched, since it is simply pausing rather than sheltering from anything.

The edge of the bowl is where this drawing can flatten out: add a thin strip of deeper grey just under the rim’s curve to suggest its thickness, which keeps the whole birdbath looking solid and three-dimensional rather than like a flat circle.

No white gel pen for the ice cracks, a sharp kneaded eraser corner lifts thin white lines from blue pencil almost as well.

You Will Need

• white gel pen

Palette: Icy Blue,Black,Soft Grey,White

Tuck a small group of sparrows into a snow-dusted hedge for a drawing built more from texture than individual detail. Draw the hedge first as an irregular rounded mass using loose scribbled strokes in two or three greens, then nestle three or four sparrow shapes partway into that mass, some just heads and shoulders peeking through the twigs.

Keep the hedge texture loose and varied, mixing sage green with touches of darker green and brown so it feels like real tangled branches rather than a flat green blob, and leave scattered patches of bare white paper throughout to read as clinging snow. The sparrows themselves can stay simple, since the hedge is doing most of the visual work here.

Try the same approach again later with a different mix of birds tucked into the hedge, perhaps a junco or titmouse among the sparrows, to make a companion piece using the identical hedge texture.

If sage green is not in your set, mix a little grey into ordinary green for a closer, dustier winter tone.

Palette: Sage Green,Dark Green,Warm Brown,White

Give your second cardinal a perch on the snowy peaked roof of a birdhouse, standing bold and solitary against the white. Draw the birdhouse first as a simple square body with a steep triangular roof, capped generously in bare white paper, then set the cardinal right at the roof’s peak, tail trailing down one slope.

Layer the cherry red in several thin, even passes across the whole body, saving your darkest, most saturated layer for the crest and wingtips where the color naturally looks richest. Keep the black mask around the beak sharp and small, since that crisp dark shape against all that red and white is what makes a cardinal instantly recognizable even from a distance.

If the red looks patchy once layered, check that your strokes all run the same direction rather than crossing randomly, since consistent stroke direction is what gives colored pencil red its smooth, confident finish.

No true cherry red available, a scarlet red layered under a touch of burgundy gets close enough for this bird.

Palette: Cherry Red,Black,White,Icy Blue

Draw a wren singing from the top of a snowy fence post, head tipped back and beak open mid-song, for a pose with more energy than most on this list. Sketch the fence post first, matching the one from the earlier sparrow trio if you like a cohesive set, then perch the wren at the very top with its whole body angled slightly upward.

Build the open beak as a small thin gap rather than a wide triangle, since a singing wren’s beak barely parts, and tip the tail down behind it to counterbalance the raised head. Add a few short curved pencil lines near the beak to suggest sound trailing into the cold air, kept light and loose rather than solid.

This open-beak pose is easy to overdo: keep the gap small and the head angle only slightly raised, since too wide a beak or too steep a tilt starts to look alarmed rather than joyfully singing.

No marks needed to suggest sound if that feels like too much, a tipped-back head alone reads clearly as singing on its own.

Palette: Warm Brown,Cream,Soft Grey,Icy Blue

Try a pine siskin working at a pine cone coated in seed and suet, a feeder style with plenty of interesting texture to draw. Sketch the pine cone first as a tapered oval built from overlapping curved scales, then coat its surface roughly in small seed shapes and press the siskin’s small streaky body against one side, beak digging into a gap between scales.

Keep the siskin itself modest and streaky, warm grey brown all over with just a hint of pale yellow at the base of the wings and tail, easy to underestimate next to the busier pine cone texture it clings to. Hang the whole thing from a simple loop of string at the top of the page.

The pine cone scales are where detail can spiral out of control fast: draw only the scales nearest the siskin with real texture, and let the ones further away soften into simple overlapping shapes, which keeps the eye moving naturally toward the bird.

If coating the whole cone in tiny seeds feels tedious, scatter seed texture only across the near half and leave the far side plain.

Palette: Warm Grey Brown,Pale Yellow,Cream,Black

Finish close to where you started with a chickadee peering into an empty feeder, head tilted and tucked close to the glass as if checking for a refill. Draw the feeder tube first with its seed level drawn low, nearly bare, then angle the chickadee’s head right against the plastic, body perched just outside on the little tray below.

Build the bird exactly as you have throughout this list, crisp black cap and bib, soft grey wings, but push the head further forward and down than usual to really sell the curious, searching posture. Keep the feeder tube itself mostly bare white paper with just a few thin grey lines suggesting its curved plastic edge and a scatter of husks in the tray.

A head pressed that close to an object needs a slightly different proportion than a perched bird in open air: measure the gap between beak and feeder wall and keep it tiny, almost touching, or the curious lean will lose its punch.

No clear plastic texture pencil exists, a few short white gel pen highlights along the tube’s curve suggest the shine of plastic convincingly enough.

End the set with a sparrow tugging a loose strand of wool free from a garden fence, likely gathering material for a spring nest even in the last of the winter cold. Draw the fence first as a simple section of wire or wooden rail, then catch one small snagged strand of wool on it, pulled taut between the fence and the sparrow’s beak.

Build the sparrow leaning backward slightly, wings held a touch away from the body for balance, since real tugging birds brace themselves against the pull. Keep the wool strand as just one or two soft curved lines in a warm faded color, textured with a few tiny fuzzy marks rather than drawn as a solid ribbon.

Balance is the detail to get right here: angle the sparrow’s whole body backward along the same line as the pulled strand, rather than keeping it upright, or the tugging action will not read clearly at all.

No pale wool-colored pencil on hand, cream or very light warm brown both work fine for that single strand.

Palette: Warm Brown,Cream,Soft Grey,Icy Blue

What to Do Next

Pick one bird that caught your eye, whether that is the easy puffed-up wren or a busier feeder scene, and start on a fresh sheet of bright white paper with a sharp pencil point. Finish that one all the way through before moving to the next, and this list will carry you through a good stretch of winter.

Frequently Asked Questions

What colored pencils work best for birds drawing?

A basic set of 24 to 36 artist-grade colored pencils covers every bird on this list. Look for a true black, soft grey, warm brown, cherry red and icy blue, since those five tones recur across nearly every subject here.

How do you keep colored pencil birds from looking flat?

Layer color slowly in several thin passes rather than pressing hard once, and always leave some pure white paper untouched for the brightest highlights. That contrast between layered color and bare paper is what gives feathers their sense of light.

What is the easiest bird to start with for a beginner?

A chickadee is the easiest backyard bird to draw, thanks to its simple round body and bold, high-contrast black and white markings. Those markings are forgiving of small shape mistakes, since the pattern still reads clearly either way.

How do you draw snow realistically in colored pencil?

Leave the paper completely bare for the brightest snow, and shade only the shadowed edges in a thin layer of pale blue grey. Avoid using plain grey alone, since a touch of blue is what makes snow look cold rather than dirty.

How long does one bird drawing usually take?

Most single birds on this list take between ten and forty minutes depending on detail level, with simple perched poses finishing fastest. Busier scenes with feeders, birdhouses or multiple birds naturally take longer to complete.
