These cute watercolor animals give you a full set of baby animal subjects without asking you to draw a single line first. Each one is a finished painting shown next to its own clean outline, built from a few big simple shapes so nothing gets fiddly or overlapping.
Print the outline at the size you want to paint, then transfer it to your watercolor paper by taping both sheets to a sunny window or a light pad, or by sliding a sheet of graphite transfer paper between the two and tracing the lines. Once the shapes are on your good paper, prop the finished example beside you and paint or colour at your own pace.
Using these images: free for personal projects such as printing, coloring, cards, journals and gifts. Handmade items that include them may be sold up to 30 pieces per design. More than that is commercial use and is not permitted, and neither is selling or sharing the images themselves or passing them off as your own. Please ask before any other use.
Sleeping Kitten
Lay a pale cream wash over the whole body first and let it dry fully before anything else. Drop a soft grey wash onto the back and tail while the paper is barely damp so the two colours blend at the edges without hard lines. Keep the face area lighter than the back so the sleeping kitten feels soft, then add a tiny pink nose and closed eye lines last with a fine brush once everything is dry.

Puppy
Paint the body in a warm golden wash first, leaving the chest patch and paw tips untouched for white paper to show through. While that wash is still damp, drop a darker brown along the ear and back for shading that blends naturally rather than sitting in hard stripes. Once dry, paint the nose a deep warm brown and add a small white highlight dot in each eye to give the puppy its alert, cheerful look.

Baby Elephant
Mix a soft blue-grey and wash it evenly over the whole body, keeping the wash flatter here than on the furrier animals since elephant skin reads smoothly. Let the ears dry a shade lighter by adding less pigment there, then once the base is dry, add a faint deeper grey line along the trunk curl and the top of the back to suggest its rounded form. A soft pink blush on the inside of the ears finishes it nicely.

If you enjoy painting big gentle animals like this one, the wild watercolor animals collection has larger creatures built the same simple way.
Duckling
Wash the whole body in bright sunny yellow, keeping it even and flat since fluffy ducklings read best as clean colour rather than heavy shading. While still slightly damp, touch a little deeper yellow or orange near the wing fold and tail so the shape has gentle depth without hard edges. Paint the beak and feet in warm orange last, and leave a tiny white dot in the eye for sparkle.
Palette: Cadmium Yellow,Orange,Payne’s Grey
Panda Cub
Leave the white body areas untouched and paint only the black shapes: ears, eye patches and legs, using a well loaded brush so the black stays rich and flat rather than streaky. Let each black shape dry fully before touching the next one so they do not bleed into each other across the white fur. Finish with a tiny grey shadow under the body to settle the panda cub onto the page.
Palette: Ivory Black,Light Grey
Baby Seal
Wash the whole body in a very pale cream and let it dry completely. Load a fine brush with soft grey and dot small speckles across the back and head, spacing them loosely so the fur looks natural rather than patterned. Keep the belly and flippers paler than the back, and paint the large dark eyes last with a tiny white highlight so the baby seal looks soft and alert.

If you like painting animals that live near water, the easy ocean watercolor animals collection is a good next set to try.
Koala Joey
Wash the body in a soft dove grey, leaving the chest patch and inner ears white. While the grey is still damp, deepen the wash slightly along the back and around the ear edges so the fur has gentle variation without any hard lines. Paint the short branch in a simple flat brown last, keeping it plain so it stays a quiet support for the koala joey rather than competing with it.
Palette: Light Grey,Payne’s Grey,Raw Sienna
Fawn
Wash the body in warm reddish brown, keeping the belly and inner legs lighter by using less pigment there. Before the wash dries, lift small dots of colour away with a damp clean brush or a cotton swab to reveal pale spots along the back, which is easier than painting each spot separately. Add thin dark lines for the legs once everything is dry, since this is the one part worth lining up carefully when you transfer the outline.
Palette: Burnt Sienna,Titanium White,Burnt Umber
Hamster
Paint the body in warm golden brown, leaving the cheeks, belly and paws paler by diluting the wash in those areas. Let the colour pool slightly around the cheek pouches while still damp so they look softly rounded rather than flat. Paint the tiny seed in a plain tan last, and keep the dark eyes small and round so the hamster keeps its cheerful, chubby look.
Palette: Raw Sienna,Naples Yellow,Burnt Umber
Piglet
Wash the whole body in a light pink and let it dry before adding anything else. Mix a slightly deeper pink for the snout and the inside of the ears, painting these shapes cleanly since they are what reads as piglet at a glance. Add a soft grey shadow beneath the feet to ground the piglet, and keep the whole palette light and sweet rather than reaching for saturated colour.
Palette: Opera Pink,Rose Pink,Light Grey
Baby Chick
Wash the body in cheerful bright yellow, keeping the wash flat and even since this small round shape needs very little variation to read well. While slightly damp, touch a hint of warm orange near the wing edge so the shape keeps some gentle roundness. Paint the beak and feet in orange once dry, and finish with a single small black dot for the eye so the chick stays simple and charming.
Palette: Cadmium Yellow,Orange,Ivory Black
Baby Sloth
Wash the body in a soft warm brown, then while still damp drop a touch of deeper brown along the arms and back so the fur has some gentle depth without any fine lines. Keep the face area pale by wiping the wash back slightly with a clean damp brush before it sets. Paint the plain branch in a flat mid brown last, and add two small dark eyes and a soft curved mouth so the baby sloth keeps its calm, happy expression.
Palette: Raw Sienna,Burnt Umber,Naples Yellow
Baby Lamb
Keep the woolly body mostly white, adding only a very pale cream wash in the shadow areas under the curls so the wool still reads as soft and fluffy rather than flat white paper. Paint the face, ears and legs in a warm soft pink-brown, keeping these simple shapes clean since they carry most of the character. A faint grey shadow beneath the lamb settles it onto the page and finishes the painting.
Palette: Titanium White,Naples Yellow,Rose Pink
Little Bear Cub
Wash the body in warm brown, leaving the muzzle and belly patch paler by using a thinner mix there. While the main wash is still damp, deepen the colour slightly along the back and the edges of the ears so the fur has soft gradual shading. Once fully dry, add two small dark eyes and a simple round nose, keeping details minimal so the bear cub stays soft and easy to paint in one sitting.

Frequently Asked Questions
What size should I print the outlines?
Print at standard letter or A4 size so the shapes fit comfortably on a 9×12 inch watercolor paper sheet. Scale up on a photocopier if you want a larger painting with more room for loose brushwork.
What paper works best for these animals?
Cold press watercolor paper around 140lb handles washes and blending best without buckling. Hot press paper also works if you prefer smoother, more controlled edges on the small shapes.
How do I transfer the outline without a light pad?
Tape the printed outline and your watercolor paper together against a sunny window and trace the lines through with a pencil. Graphite transfer paper slid between the two sheets works just as well on a flat table.
Can I use coloured pencils or markers instead of paint?
Yes, every outline works just as well with coloured pencils or markers. Build colour in light layers with pencils for the same soft blended look, or use markers for flatter, bolder colour.
Do I need to copy the colours exactly?
No, the palettes are starting points, not rules. Swap in any cheerful colours you like, since the simple shapes will hold together no matter which hues you choose.
