Table of Contents
This food watercolor illustration collection gives you thirteen cheerful treats, from a flaky croissant to a jar of honey, each one built from a few big simple shapes so there is nothing tricky to draw. Every template comes as a finished painted example and a clean black outline, ready to print and use today.
Print the outline at the size you want, then transfer it onto your watercolor paper by holding both sheets against a sunny window, using a light pad, or going over the lines with graphite transfer paper. Once the shapes are on your paper, prop the painted example beside you and work through it colour by colour.
Using these images: free for personal projects such as printing, coloring, cards, journals and gifts. Handmade items that include them may be sold up to 30 pieces per design. More than that is commercial use and is not permitted, and neither is selling or sharing the images themselves or passing them off as your own. Please ask before any other use.
Croissant
Start with a thin wash of Yellow Ochre over the whole croissant shape, then while it is still damp drop in small strokes of Burnt Sienna along the ridges and curled tips where the crust browns most. Let the two colours blend softly on the paper rather than mixing them on the palette. Once dry, add a few short dry-brush lines along the curves in Burnt Sienna to suggest the flaky layers, keeping them loose rather than drawn one by one.

Cupcake
Paint the wrapper first in two alternating bands of Cadmium Red and white paper left bare, then once dry move up to the frosting swirl with a flat wash of Opera Pink, darkening the lower curves slightly with a second pass while the first is still damp. Add a handful of tiny coloured dots on top with a fine brush for sprinkles once everything else is completely dry, this is the one touch that makes the cupcake read as finished rather than plain.
You Will Need
- fine detail brush

Donut
Wash the whole ring in Opera Pink first, keeping the wash flat and even so the glaze looks smooth and glossy. While the paint is still wet, touch a slightly deeper pink into the lower edge of the ring to hint at where the glaze thickens and drips. Finish with small confetti strokes of Lemon Yellow, Sky Blue and white gel pen scattered across the top once dry, this scatter of colour is what sells the glazed donut look.
You Will Need
- white gel pen

Macaron Stack
Give each macaron its own flat wash, working top to bottom in Opera Pink, Pistachio Green and Lilac so the stack reads as three distinct cookies rather than one blur. Leave a thin white line of bare paper between each shell to keep the stack readable, then once dry add a slightly deeper tone of each colour along the ruffled middle edge of every macaron to show its filling line. This small ring of shadow is what makes each one look round and separate.

If you want more punch, try the brighter palette ideas in the watercolor food step by step lessons, which cover a similar pastel cafe mood.
Slice of Cake
Paint the two cake layers first in a soft Yellow Ochre wash, leaving a thin white gap between them for the filling. Fill that gap with Opera Pink, then wash the outer frosting coat in a paler pink mixed with more water so it reads as a different texture from the filling. Finish with a small cream-coloured dollop on top in a pale wash of Yellow Ochre and white, adding one tiny red dot for a cherry to finish the slice.
Palette: Yellow Ochre,Opera Pink,Cadmium Red
Cup of Coffee
Leave the mug itself mostly white paper, adding only a thin grey shadow line along its curved edge to give it form. Fill the inside with a rich wash of Burnt Umber for the coffee, dropping in a swirl of white gouache or just leaving bare paper for the cream so the two tones stay distinct. Add two or three loose wavy lines above the cup in a very pale grey for steam, this light touch is what makes the coffee look hot and fresh.

Pizza Slice
Wash the crust edge first in a pale Yellow Ochre, then fill the main triangle with a warmer Cadmium Yellow for the melted cheese, letting the two tones blend slightly where they meet. While the cheese layer is still a little damp, drop in small circles of Cadmium Red for the pepperoni so their edges soften naturally into the cheese. Once everything is dry, flick a few tiny dots of Sap Green across the top with the tip of a dry brush for herb flecks.

Bowl of Ramen
Paint the broth first in a thin wash of Raw Sienna, keeping it pale so the noodles underneath still show through as lighter curved lines of bare paper. Add the egg half in soft Lemon Yellow with a Cadmium Orange centre once the broth is dry, then paint the fish cake slice in a flat pale pink with a thin pink swirl line left as white paper. Finish with two or three short strokes of Sap Green for green onion scattered on top.

Cinnamon Roll
Wash the whole roll in Yellow Ochre first, then once dry trace the spiral with a thin line of Burnt Sienna following the curl from the outer edge into the centre. Let the spiral line stay a little uneven and loose rather than perfectly even, it reads more like a real swirl that way. Finish with a drizzle of white gouache or a left-bare zigzag line of white paper across the top for the icing, which is what instantly reads as a cinnamon roll.
You Will Need
- white gouache (optional)

Sushi Pair
Paint the rice mounds first by leaving most of the shape as bare white paper, adding only a faint grey shadow line along the base of each mound to give them weight. Once dry, wash the salmon topping in Cadmium Orange, dropping in a touch of Opera Pink while still damp so the fish shows natural colour variation. Add a small flat puddle of Burnt Umber beside the pair for soy sauce, keeping its edge soft and slightly irregular.

Waffle with Berries
Wash the whole waffle in Yellow Ochre first, then once dry paint only the recessed grid lines in a deeper Burnt Sienna using a fine brush so the grid pattern stays crisp against the lighter squares. Add the strawberries in Cadmium Red and the blueberries in a dusty Payne’s Grey and blue mix on top, keeping each berry a simple rounded shape. Finish with a thin loose line of Raw Sienna drizzling across the fruit for syrup.

For more fruit colour mixing practice before tackling the berries, the tips in this fruit illustration guide carry over nicely.
Baguette
This long thin shape transfers more easily if you line up the centre fold of your paper with the middle of the baguette before pressing down, so the curve stays even along its whole length. Wash the body in Yellow Ochre, then while still damp drop Burnt Sienna into the slashed cuts and both rounded ends where the crust darkens most. Keep the wash loose and let the two colours bleed into each other rather than painting each tone as a hard separate shape.

Jar of Honey
Leave the jar’s glass mostly as bare white paper with just a thin Payne’s Grey outline along the curved edges to suggest glass. Fill the inside with a rich flat wash of Cadmium Orange and Yellow Ochre mixed wet-in-wet so the honey glows warm and slightly uneven, like real honey catching light. Paint the small wooden dipper in Burnt Sienna leaning against the jar, then add a few thin drips of the same honey colour trailing down the outside glass as the finishing touch.

Frequently Asked Questions
What size should I print these outlines?
Print at standard letter or A4 size for a comfortable painting surface, or enlarge on a home printer or at a copy shop if you want a bigger subject to work on.
What paper works best for these watercolor templates?
Cold press watercolor paper, at least 140lb weight, handles washes and blending best without buckling or tearing while you paint.
How do I transfer the outline onto watercolor paper?
Tape the printed outline and your watercolor paper together over a sunny window or light pad and trace the lines, or slide graphite transfer paper between the two sheets and go over the design with a pencil.
Can I use coloured pencils or markers instead of paint?
Yes, every outline works just as well with coloured pencils or markers, so follow the same colour placement described for each template and build up pressure gradually for richer tone.
Do I need to copy the colours exactly?
No, the palettes given are a cheerful starting point, so feel free to swap in your own favourite shades once you are comfortable with the shapes.
