33 Parrot Painting Ideas and Other Tropical Birds in Jungle Greens

A parrot painting gives gouache everything it does best: flat bold color, crisp edges, and a shape so graphic it reads from across the room. Macaws, lorikeets, toucans and all their jungle neighbors are built for this kind of paint, because their markings already come in clean blocks of coral, turquoise and sunny yellow rather than soft blends.

Below are 33 birds, each caught mid-moment in a small setting rather than floating alone on the page. Scroll through, pick the one that matches your mood today, and work from the first wash to the last crisp highlight with the steps right there in the text.

Scarlet macaw red is the loudest color on this whole list, so start there: block in the body with Cadmium Red Light in one flat matte shape, leaving the branch and nut as cream paper underneath. Keep the shape simple, a rounded body and a long tapering tail, no feather-by-feather detail yet.

Once that layer is dry, add the blue and yellow wing patches as clean flat blocks laid right on top, and paint the curved grey beak gripping the nut in one confident stroke. A common mistake here is softening the edges where colors meet; keep every boundary crisp by letting each shape dry before the next touches it.

Paint the branch in a warm brown and the nut as a small round shape under the beak, tipped slightly as if just cracked. If your reds look chalky, mix in a touch of white only for the lightest highlight feathers, never into the base red itself.

Finish with a fine black line around the eye and a single white dot for its highlight. Today’s tip: paint the tail last, in one long sweeping brushstroke, so it keeps its movement instead of looking built from pieces.

Lovebirds sitting close together is really an exercise in proportion: paint one bird first, then measure the second against it so the pair reads as a true match rather than two different sizes guessed at separately. Use a small round brush and keep both bodies as simple rounded ovals in peach and apple green.

Work the first bird in flat shapes, peach head, green body, a small dark beak, and let it dry completely before starting the second so wet edges never bleed into each other. Tilt the second bird’s head slightly toward the first; that small gesture is what makes them read as “sharing” the perch rather than just perched near one another.

If the two birds start looking identical and flat as a pair, turn one body a touch more toward the viewer and keep the other in profile. Beginners can skip individual feathers entirely and rely on the two solid color blocks to carry the whole picture.

Paint the perch as one warm brown stroke running under both birds. Finish with tiny white catchlights in each eye, added last with the tip of the brush.

Surprise is a pose, so before mixing any paint, decide where that crest points: straight up and fanned means startled, which is exactly the energy this bird needs. Sketch the white body as one rounded shape in pencil first, then commit to the crest’s angle before you touch paint to paper.

Block the body in Titanium White mixed with a whisper of Payne’s Grey for shadow, keeping the shape flat and matte. Paint the crest feathers in Sunny Yellow as several narrow pointed shapes fanning upward from the head, slightly uneven in length so they feel alive rather than symmetrical and stiff.

White gouache over white paper can look flat and lifeless if you stop there; add one soft grey shadow shape along the body’s lower edge to give it form. A round grey eye with a black pupil and the beak in pale grey finish the face.

If pure white gouache looks chalky on your paper, warm it slightly with a touch of yellow ochre before applying. Try this: paint the crest last, on top of the dry body, so each yellow feather stays crisp against the white.

Palette: Titanium White,Sunny Yellow,Payne’s Grey,Pale Grey

Reference photos of startled cockatoos show the crest almost vertical and fully open; keep that angle exaggerated so the surprise reads instantly on the page.

Mirrors mean painting the bird twice at a slightly different angle, so this is the idea to pick once you want a small challenge. Block the real bird first in soft Payne’s Grey with a bright red tail, keeping the shape simple and the head turned toward where the mirror will hang.

Paint a small round or oval mirror shape to one side in a thin gold or brown frame, then paint the reflection as a slightly smaller, slightly flattened version of the same bird facing back. The reflection does not need every detail the real bird has; a simplified grey shape with the same red tail tip reads clearly as “the same bird, mirrored.”

The usual trap is making the reflection too perfect and the same size, which flattens the whole picture; shrink it slightly and soften its edge just a touch to push it back in space. Keep the mirror’s glass as a pale cream-grey rather than pure white so it does not outshine the bird.

Finish with a thin dark line defining the mirror’s rim. One tip for today: paint the real bird’s eye sharp and bright, and the reflected eye slightly softer, to tell the two apart at a glance.

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Cadmium Red,Raw Umber,Cream

Flight changes everything about eye level: paint this pair from below, as if you are standing on the riverbank looking up, and their bellies and the undersides of their wings become the main shapes you see. Sketch two simple diagonal bird silhouettes first, wings spread, before any color goes down.

Block the backs in Ultramarine Blue and the chests and underwings in warm Sunny Yellow, keeping both birds flat and graphic with crisp edges between the two color blocks. A thin ribbon of turquoise river winds below them, painted in one loose wavy band so it reads as water without needing reflections or detail.

Overlapping the two birds’ wingtips slightly is what sells the sense of flying together; painting them too far apart makes the scene feel static instead of airborne. If your blue looks flat against the sky, drop in a touch of Payne’s Grey along the trailing wing edge for shadow.

Leave the cream paper as open sky above and around them, no need to paint it blue. For next time, try the same pose from a side view instead of below, to compare how differently the light falls on the wings.

Palette: Ultramarine Blue,Sunny Yellow,Turquoise,Payne’s Grey

Small and quick, a bathing budgie is the idea to reach for when time is short. Paint the saucer first, a simple flattened oval in pale turquoise with a thin white rim, sitting low on the page so the bird can crouch into it.

Block the budgie’s body in apple green with a yellow face and a scatter of small black dots across the wing, keeping the pose low and hunched with feathers slightly puffed, wings held a touch away from the body as if mid-splash. A few short white flicks of paint around the saucer’s edge suggest water droplets without painting every splash in detail.

In ten minutes you can stop right there with flat color and a dry brushed splash or two. Given forty minutes, add a soft blue-grey shadow under the saucer and deepen the green on the bird’s back with a second thin glaze once the first layer is dry, to give the body gentle roundness.

If the water droplets look too heavy, scrape a few back out with a damp brush tip while still wet. Keep the whole scene small on the page; a tight composition suits this quick, splashy subject.

Palette: Apple Green,Sunny Yellow,Turquoise,White

Hanging upside down flips every proportion rule you would normally use, so measure the head against the body while the bird is inverted, not as you imagine it right side up, or the pose reads wrong even with perfect colors. Sketch the feet first, gripping a curved branch near a large tropical blossom, then build the body hanging below.

This is the bird for every bright color in the box: block the head in deep blue, the chest in orange and yellow bands, and the back in rich green, each as its own flat matte shape with a crisp edge against the next. Paint the blossom in coral or pink with a simple rounded petal shape, large enough to justify a bird hanging from it.

Keep the beak small and curved and the tail pointing straight down to reinforce the upside down pose. If the color bands start looking muddy where they meet, let each one dry fully before adding the next rather than blending wet into wet.

Finish with one bright yellow curved claw gripping the branch. Try this trick today: paint the background cream right up to the blossom’s edge so the flower’s coral pops without competition.

Palette: Deep Blue,Orange,Leaf Green,Coral

Mango orange against parrot green is the whole appeal here, so plan that contrast before you mix a single color. Block the parrot’s body in a flat mid green, keeping the shape simple with a slightly puffed chest and one foot raised to hold the fruit.

Paint the mango slice as a curved wedge shape in warm orange with a thin yellow edge where the skin shows, held in the raised foot or propped against the branch below the beak. The usual mistake is painting the fruit too small to read clearly; make the slice nearly as large as the parrot’s head so it is unmistakably a mango.

Add a few drips of juice as small orange dots below the beak, painted last with the tip of a fine brush. If your green looks flat next to the orange, warm one edge of the body with a thin wash of yellow ochre where the light would catch it.

Keep the branch simple, one warm brown diagonal line across the lower page. No mango on hand for reference; a slice of orange or peach works just as well as a stand-in for the shape and color.

Palette: Leaf Green,Orange,Yellow Ochre,Raw Umber

Windowsill light comes from one side only, so decide now whether it is morning light from the left or afternoon light from the right, because that single choice shapes every shadow you paint next. Block the cockatiel’s body in soft grey with a yellow crest and face, then add the round orange cheek patch as one clean dot on the lit side of the face.

Paint the windowsill as a simple pale strip beneath the bird, with a thin strip of sky color visible through the glass behind it. Shade the side of the body away from the light with a touch more Payne’s Grey mixed into the base grey, keeping the shadow flat rather than blended into a gradient.

If the crest feathers look stiff, paint them as three or four slightly curved yellow shapes rather than one solid block. A simple white curtain edge at one side of the window adds a cozy frame without much extra work.

Finish with a dark eye ringed by a thin pale eye patch. One tip: keep the sky through the glass a flat pale blue, never detailed, so it stays clearly background.

Palette: Soft Grey,Sunny Yellow,Orange,Pale Sky Blue

A straw hat gives you a chance to practice one texture trick before moving on to feathers. Paint the hat first as a wide flat oval in warm tan, then drag a dry, barely loaded brush across it in short strokes to suggest woven straw without drawing every fiber by hand.

Once that hat shape is dry, perch the parrot along its curved brim, feet gripping the straw edge, body painted in bold flat green and red blocks as usual. Let the bird’s tail hang down over the brim on one side to tie the two shapes together instead of leaving them floating separately.

If the dry brush texture on the hat looks too scratchy or uneven, soften a few strokes with a clean damp brush while the paint is still workable. A thin band of ribbon in coral around the hat’s crown adds a bright accent color that also helps separate hat from bird.

Keep the background cream and empty so the hat and bird read as the whole picture. Try this today: dry brush only the top half of the hat and leave the underside flatter, since it sits more in shadow.

Palette: Tan,Leaf Green,Coral,Cadmium Red

Red on red is a real test of proportion and placement, since a scarlet macaw surrounded by red hibiscus blooms can merge into one shape if you are not careful. Paint the flowers first in a slightly cooler red than the macaw’s body, so the two reds sit close but stay distinguishable once both are dry.

Block the bird’s body in warmer Cadmium Red and let a few hibiscus blooms overlap its tail and shoulder, each flower a simple five petal shape with a long curved stamen reaching out from the center. Keep two or three leaves in jungle green tucked behind the flowers to give the red shapes somewhere to rest visually.

If the whole composition starts feeling like one red blur, separate bird from flower with a thin line of cream paper left unpainted between shapes, or a sliver of green leaf. The macaw’s blue wing patch becomes essential here, since it is the one cool color breaking up all that red.

Finish the stamens with tiny yellow dots at the tips. One tip: paint the hibiscus flowers slightly smaller than the bird’s head so the macaw stays clearly the subject.

Palette: Cadmium Red,Rose Red,Jungle Green,Sunny Yellow

Three birds on one swing is really about rhythm: vary their colors and poses so the eye travels along the row instead of seeing three copies of the same bird. Paint the swing first, a simple curved rope or wire shape hanging from the top of the page, with a thin wooden perch bar running across it.

Block the three budgies in different colorways, perhaps green, blue and yellow, each a simple rounded shape, and turn one head to face the viewer while the other two look along the perch. Stagger their poses slightly, one preening, one upright, one leaning, so the row feels alive rather than lined up like soldiers.

The common trap with any row of repeated subjects is making them too identical; changing color, head angle and posture solves it without extra painting time. Let the swing’s ropes cross slightly at the top where they meet the hanging point, for a touch of real structure.

Finish with small dark feet gripping the bar, painted last in a fine line. For a future version, try the same three birds on a straight branch instead of a swing, to compare the mood of each setting.

Palette: Apple Green,Sky Blue,Sunny Yellow,Raw Umber

Snow and jungle green do not usually share a page, which is exactly what makes a kea parrot refreshing here: it is an alpine parrot, olive green rather than tropical brights, perched on bare grey rock with snow around it. Block the body in a muted olive green with a flash of orange under the wing, the one bright note against all that cool stone and snow.

Paint the rock as simple angular grey shapes beneath the bird, then add snow as flat white patches tucked into the rock’s crevices rather than covering the whole surface evenly. Leave some grey rock showing through so the snow does not read as a flat white blanket.

If the white snow looks dull against cream paper, mix the tiniest touch of blue into it for cold shadow areas, keeping the lit patches pure white. The kea’s curved grey beak is longer and more hooked than a typical parrot’s; exaggerate that curve slightly so the species reads correctly.

Finish with the orange underwing flash peeking out as the bird settles its wings. One tip: keep the whole palette cooler and more muted than your other jungle birds, to make this one stand apart in a series.

Palette: Olive Green,Orange,Cool Grey,White

Male and female eclectus parrots look so different in color that painting them side by side becomes a lesson in balance rather than matching. Block the female first in bold red with touches of purple-blue on the chest, then paint the male beside her in rich emerald green with a small orange beak, keeping both bodies the same simple rounded shape so only the color changes.

Perch them close together on one branch, bodies angled slightly toward each other, which reads as a pair rather than two strangers who happen to share a tree. Since red and green sit opposite each other and can vibrate unpleasantly if both are too saturated, mute one slightly, perhaps deepening the green toward forest tones while keeping the red bright.

A simple leafy branch in a third, quieter green ties the two bright birds together without competing with either. If the two colors still clash once dry, add a thin cream halo of untouched paper between their bodies to let each breathe.

Finish both beaks, orange for him, dark grey for her, as the last small detail. Today’s tip: paint the red female slightly larger, since female eclectus parrots are in fact the bigger of the pair.

Palette: Cadmium Red,Emerald Green,Deep Purple,Orange

Only the head and shoulders show here, which makes this one of the quickest paintings on the list. Paint the palm trunk first as a tall simple grey-brown column filling most of the page, then cut a dark oval hole into it, left as a flat near-black shape rather than a detailed cavity.

Block the parrot’s head and a sliver of shoulder emerging from that hole, bright green or blue against the dark opening, with just the curve of the beak and one eye clearly visible. In ten minutes you can stop at that simple silhouette; with more time, add rough bark texture to the trunk using short dry-brushed vertical strokes in a darker brown.

The easy mistake is making the hole too small to read as a hole at all; keep it clearly larger than the bird’s head so there is visible dark space around the peeking face. A few palm fronds sketched loosely at the top of the trunk anchor the setting without much extra work.

Finish with a bright catchlight in the eye so it stands out against the dark hole. One tip: keep the trunk’s bark pattern loose and irregular rather than a tidy repeating texture.

Palette: Grey-Brown,Near Black,Leaf Green,Jungle Green

A tiny bird on a tiny cup lives or dies on scale, so measure the conure’s body against the cup before committing to paint: the bird should look like it could just fit, feet spread along the rim for balance. Paint the cup first as a simple rounded shape in cream or white with a thin colored stripe or pattern band, keeping it small on the page so the bird reads as the larger subject.

Block the conure in bright green with a touch of red on the head and tail, legs bent and spread wide across the rim in a balancing pose, wings slightly out for stability. A faint curl of steam rising from the cup, painted as one or two soft grey wisps, adds a cozy touch without much effort.

If the cup ends up looking bigger than the bird once painted, it is usually because the bird’s legs were drawn too short; lengthen them slightly to bridge the rim convincingly. Keep the saucer beneath the cup as one flat oval, no pattern needed.

Finish with a thin painted line suggesting the cup’s handle to one side. Try this trick: paint the steam last, in the thinnest wash of grey-white, so it stays soft against the cream background.

Palette: Leaf Green,Cadmium Red,Cream,Pale Grey

One raised foot holding fruit is a small gesture that needs careful weight, so sketch the standing leg first, directly under the body for balance, before adding the raised foot gripping the cherry out to the side. Block the parrot’s body in whichever bright color you like best from this list, bright blue works especially well against red cherries.

Paint the cherry as two small round red shapes joined by a thin green stem, held delicately in the curled foot. The usual slip is making the raised foot look stiff or flat; curl the toes around the cherry stem as if actually gripping it, with a tiny gap of cream paper between each toe.

If the cherry’s red looks too similar to any red already in the bird’s feathers, shift the cherry toward a cooler, darker red so it stands apart as a separate object. Keep the branch beneath the standing foot simple and thin.

Finish with one small white highlight dot on each cherry to make them look glossy. One tip for today: paint the cherries slightly glossy with white highlights but keep the bird’s feathers fully matte, so the fruit pops as the shiny detail.

Palette: Sky Blue,Dark Red,Leaf Green,White

The beak is the whole picture with a toucan, so give it the time the bird’s body does not need. Block the body first as a simple black oval shape with a white chest patch, kept deliberately plain so all the visual interest sits in the beak that follows.

Paint the beak in bold bands of orange, yellow and a touch of red, each a flat clean shape rather than a blended gradient, since real toucan beaks look almost painted themselves with their sharp color divisions. Balance one small round berry right at the tip, a single red or purple dot, as if the bird is about to flip it into the air.

If the beak’s color bands start looking muddy, paint the lightest color first, let it dry fully, then add each darker band on top with a clean brush. Keep the branch beneath the feet simple and slightly thick, since toucans perch on sturdy limbs.

Finish with a small white highlight along the top ridge of the beak to give it some shine against the matte body. Today’s tip: keep the black body completely flat with no texture, so the eye goes straight to that beak.

Palette: Black,Orange,Sunny Yellow,Cadmium Red

This toucan leans on texture rather than action, so after the last idea’s bold beak, slow down here and build up the branch it sits on. Block the bird’s body in black with a yellow throat patch and the beak in its signature rainbow of green, orange and red bands, same flat clean approach as before.

Paint the branch thick and rough across the lower page, then once dry, dab small irregular patches of mossy green on top using a nearly dry brush, pressing lightly so the texture stays broken and soft rather than a solid green coat. This dry brush technique is the trick worth practicing here, since it separates living moss from painted wood far better than a flat wash would.

If the moss ends up covering the branch too evenly, scrape some back with a clean damp brush while still workable to let more brown show through. Keep the toucan’s eye bright with a small ring of blue-green skin, a true feature of this species worth the extra five minutes.

Finish with a few tiny cream dots flicked onto the moss for texture highlights. One tip: load the dry brush lightly and test the stroke on scrap paper first, since too much paint turns dry brush into a solid blob.

Palette: Black,Jungle Green,Orange,Moss Green

Painting a hornbill from below means its heavy curved casque on top of the beak becomes a strong silhouette against the sky, so draw that shape carefully before adding any color; it is what makes this bird instantly recognizable in flight. Block the body and broad wings in black with clean white bands, keeping wings spread wide and flat across the upper page.

Beneath the bird, paint the jungle canopy as rounded overlapping treetop shapes in varied greens, darker ones further back and brighter ones close to the viewer, with no need for individual leaves. The light should come from above here, since the bird flies under open sky, so keep the underside of its wings in slightly cooler shadow tones compared to the canopy below, which is lit more directly.

If the canopy shapes look too uniform, vary their size and overlap more; a few taller tree shapes breaking the tree line add welcome rhythm. Keep the hornbill’s casque a warm yellow-orange, since that is the bird’s most distinctive feature.

Finish with a thin strip of pale sky visible above the bird. One tip: keep the canopy darker in value than the sky so the flying bird stays the clear focal point against both.

Palette: Black,White,Jungle Green,Yellow-Orange

Capturing a dive means freezing one split second, so pick the moment just before entry, body streamlined, wings pulled back, beak pointed straight down, rather than a static perched pose. Block the kingfisher’s body in electric blue along the back and warm orange along the chest, a classic color pairing that needs almost no extra decoration to look striking.

Paint the water below as a simple flat turquoise shape, then lift a few curved lines out of the wet paint with a clean damp brush to suggest ripples and the splash point where the bird is about to enter. This lifting technique works better here than painting white ripples on top, since it keeps the water looking genuinely wet and continuous rather than patched.

If the dive pose looks stiff, check that the head, body and tail all follow one continuous diagonal line pointing down toward the water; any break in that line reads as awkward rather than fast. Keep the background sky plain and pale so nothing competes with the dive itself.

Finish with a small white splash shape right at the water’s surface where the beak will meet it. One tip for today: paint the body first and the splash last, since everything else should feel like it is building toward that point of impact.

Palette: Electric Blue,Orange,Turquoise,White

Mangrove roots give you a chance to build an interesting lower composition before the bird even goes in. Paint a tangle of curved grey-brown root shapes rising from shallow water across the bottom third of the page, keeping the shapes simple and overlapping rather than a dense maze.

Block the scarlet ibis above the roots in one bold flat red, its long curved neck bent down as if searching the water, legs painted thin and dark wading between the roots. Since the bird stands partly in water, paint a few of its lower leg sections slightly softened or broken by a thin horizontal line of water color, to suggest the waterline without drawing a full reflection.

If the red ibis gets lost against brown roots, cool the roots slightly toward grey so they recede and let the warm red stand forward. Keep the water a quiet grey-green, calmer in color than anything else on the page.

Finish with the ibis’s long black-tipped beak curving down toward the water’s surface. One tip: keep the roots’ shapes simple and few rather than numerous and fussy, so they frame the bird instead of competing with it.

Palette: Scarlet Red,Grey-Brown,Grey-Green,Black

A hoopoe’s fan-shaped crest is its whole character, so build the pose around it the same way you handled the cockatoo’s surprised crest earlier, but softer and more striped here. Block the body in warm pinkish-tan with bold black and white bars across the wings, a distinctive pattern that reads well as flat crisp stripes rather than soft shading.

Paint the crest as a row of feathers fanning upward from the head, each tipped in black, slightly spread to show the bird mid-display. Perch it on a simple stone wall painted in flat warm grey blocks with a few darker mortar lines between stones, giving the scene a sense of place without much extra work.

If the wing stripes look too rigid, let a couple vary slightly in width rather than ruling them perfectly even, which keeps the pattern feeling hand-painted. Keep the long curved beak a pale pinkish-grey, slightly darker at the tip.

Finish with a small dark eye set into the warm-toned head. One tip for today: paint the stone wall’s mortar lines last, in thin dark strokes, so they sit crisply on top of the dry grey stones.

Palette: Warm Pinkish-Tan,Black,White,Warm Grey

Several bee-eaters together calls back to the budgie swing idea, so apply the same rule: vary pose and color intensity so the row reads as individuals rather than copies. Paint one long thin branch stretching nearly the width of the page, then block in three or four bee-eaters along it, each in the same rainbow palette of green, yellow and turquoise but turned at slightly different angles.

Give each bird the same long thin tail streamer and curved black beak, since that silhouette is what makes a bee-eater recognizable even in a simple flat style. Stagger their spacing unevenly along the branch rather than lining them up at perfectly equal distances, which feels more natural and less like a diagram.

If the row starts to look repetitive despite the color variation, turn one bird to face away from the others, showing its back rather than its face, for visual variety. Keep the branch itself thin and plain so it does not distract from the birds strung along it.

Finish each bird with a small black eye mask, a feature shared across the whole species. One tip: paint the furthest bird slightly smaller and paler to suggest a little distance along the branch.

Palette: Jungle Green,Sunny Yellow,Turquoise,Black

That famous tail is longer than the bird’s whole body, so plan your page vertically and leave generous room below the perch before you even sketch the head. Block the quetzal’s body in iridescent green along the back and bold red across the chest, two simple flat shapes meeting in a clean line down the middle.

Let the tail stream down from the perch in two or three long curving green ribbons, slightly wavy rather than stiff and straight, since the real feathers drift and curl with the bird’s movement. Behind it, paint a soft cloud forest backdrop of layered green hill shapes fading toward pale grey-green in the distance, with a thin mist suggested by leaving some edges deliberately soft rather than crisp.

This is one spot where a little edge-softening works in your favor, since mist genuinely blurs distant shapes; keep the quetzal itself crisp while the background stays gentler.

If the tail feathers look too stiff, paint them with a slightly looser, more flowing brushstroke than the rest of the bird, using more water in the paint for a looser line. Keep the red chest bold, since it is the main color contrast against all that green.

Finish with a small yellow-tipped beak and dark eye. One tip for today: paint the tail feathers slightly transparent near the tips, since real quetzal tail feathers do thin out and become more delicate toward the ends.

Palette: Emerald Green,Cadmium Red,Grey-Green,Sunny Yellow

Sunbirds hover and dip much like hummingbirds, so this is the moment to focus on light rather than action: decide where the sun sits and let it catch the throat feathers in a bright iridescent flash. Block the small body in deep green-blue, then add one bold patch of metallic-looking color, perhaps a warm orange-red, right at the throat where light would hit hardest.

Paint the heliconia flower large and structural beside the bird, a series of overlapping pointed bracts in bold orange and red, far bigger and bolder than the small bird drinking from it. The beak should curve down delicately into one bract’s opening, with the bird’s body angled toward the flower as if caught mid-sip.

If the throat patch does not look bright enough to read as iridescent, surround it with a slightly darker ring of the base body color, which makes the bright patch pop by contrast rather than needing a lighter paint. Keep the wings small and slightly blurred at the tips with a quick dry stroke, hinting at rapid movement.

Finish with a thin curved beak tip touching the flower. One tip: make the heliconia flower deliberately oversized next to the bird, since that scale difference is part of what makes this pairing feel tropical and lush.

Palette: Deep Green-Blue,Orange-Red,Cadmium Red,Sunny Yellow

This bird exists to perform, so give the whole page over to its display rather than any setting at all. Block the main body in deep black or near-black, keeping that shape small and simple, since the real subject is the explosion of plumes fanning out above and behind it.

Paint the ornamental plumes in bold flowing strokes of yellow, orange and red, sweeping upward and outward from the back in a dramatic arc, each feather a loose curved shape rather than a tight, careful line. Let a few plumes cross over each other to add depth to the fan without needing shading to do that work.

If the plumes look too stiff or symmetrical, loosen your wrist and paint a few with a slight extra curl or a different length than their neighbors, since real display feathers never line up perfectly. Keep the small black body grounded on a simple branch so the eye has somewhere to land before following the plumes upward.

Finish with a flash of iridescent green or blue on the throat, the one cool note in an otherwise warm, fiery bird. One tip for today: paint the plumes first with plenty of movement, then add the compact black body last, since the plumes set the whole energy of the piece.

Palette: Near Black,Sunny Yellow,Orange,Emerald Green

Tall grass means painting negative space as carefully as the bird itself, so block the crane’s body first in pale grey with a touch of white, long legs and curved neck, before any grass goes in around it. The golden crown of stiff feathers on its head is the signature detail; paint it as a round burst of short yellow-gold strokes radiating from the crown of the head.

Once the bird is dry, paint tall grass as a series of simple vertical strokes in varied greens around its legs, letting some blades overlap in front of the lower body to ground the bird in its setting rather than floating above it. Keep the grass looser and quicker than the careful crane, since contrast between a precise subject and loose surroundings reads as confident rather than careless.

If the grass ends up hiding too much of the legs, thin it out directly around the leg shapes and keep the density mainly to the sides. A small patch of red skin on the cheek, painted as one bold dot, adds the crane’s other key color accent.

Finish with a dark beak and a calm dark eye. One tip: keep the crown feathers slightly irregular in length, since a perfectly even circle looks more like a halo than real feathers.

Palette: Pale Grey,Golden Yellow,Jungle Green,Red

Gouldian finches come in several head colors in real life, so use that fact here the way the budgie swing used varied colorways: paint one with a red face, one with a black face and one with a yellow face, all perched along a single bending grass stalk. Keep each tiny body simple, a rounded shape in purple chest, green back and whichever head color you choose.

Bend the grass stalk under their combined weight with a gentle curve rather than a straight stiff line, which immediately suggests their small size and real weight resting on it. Space the three birds unevenly along the stalk’s length, closer together at one end and one slightly apart, echoing the natural spacing from the earlier swing and branch ideas but on a single thin line rather than a solid perch.

Because these birds are tiny, resist the urge to add fussy detail to each one; three confident flat color blocks per bird is plenty at this scale.

If the stalk looks too thin to hold three birds visually, thicken it slightly where their feet grip, and taper it thinner toward both ends. Finish with small black eyes and pale beaks on all three.

One tip for today: curve the stalk in a gentle S shape rather than a simple arc, for a more natural, less symmetrical composition.

Palette: Purple,Jungle Green,Cadmium Red,Sunny Yellow

Rain changes the light to flat and soft, so this scene suits muted, cooler color choices rather than the full brightness used elsewhere on this list. Paint one large banana leaf first, a simple elongated shape with a strong central vein, angled to form a natural shelter over where the bird will sit.

Block a small colorful bird, perhaps a green and yellow parrot type, tucked beneath the leaf’s curve, body slightly hunched and feathers pulled in close against the damp. Add a scatter of straight thin lines in pale grey-blue falling around the leaf to suggest rain, keeping the lines loose and varied in length rather than a uniform grid.

Where the leaf’s edge meets the rain, leave a few lines interrupted or broken, as though the leaf is actually blocking them, which sells the shelter idea better than lines painted straight through the leaf shape.

If the rain lines look too mechanical, vary their angle slightly from the left to give a sense of wind. Keep the bird’s colors slightly dulled compared to a sunny-day version, since rain softens even bright feathers.

Finish with a single raindrop shape clinging to the leaf’s tip, ready to fall. One tip: this is a strong one to revisit later with a different bird sheltering underneath, since the leaf and rain setup stays the same each time.

Palette: Jungle Green,Grey-Blue,Sunny Yellow,Leaf Green

That spoon-shaped bill swinging side to side while feeding is worth getting right, since it is this bird’s most unmistakable feature. Block the body in soft pink, deepening toward a stronger rose at the wing tips, a gentle color gradient achieved by painting the paler pink first, letting it dry, then layering a second rose glaze only at the tips once dry.

Paint the bill as a long flat grey shape ending in a distinct wide, rounded spoon tip, held low and slightly to one side as if mid-sweep through the water. Keep the legs long and thin, partly submerged, with a thin horizontal water line breaking them where they disappear beneath the surface.

If the pink looks too uniform and flat, add just one soft shadow shape along the lower body in a deeper rose-grey to suggest the roundness of the body without heavy shading. Keep the shallow water a quiet pale blue-grey, calm and still around the wading legs.

Finish with a small dark eye set into the mostly featherless, pale head, another accurate detail for this species. One tip for today: layer the rose glaze only where feather tips naturally darken, keeping most of the body paler for believable color variation.

The motmot’s tail has two bare rackets at the end that swing like a pendulum, a genuinely odd and fun shape to paint after so many full, feathered tails elsewhere on this list. Block the body in soft green with a striking blue crown stripe across the head, perched upright and still, since the whole interest in this pose is the moving tail rather than the body.

Paint the tail as a long thin green line extending well below the perch, ending in two small rounded “racket” shapes, painted as flat green ovals attached by what looks like bare quills. Angle the tail tip slightly off to one side rather than hanging perfectly straight down, to suggest the gentle pendulum swing mid-motion.

If the thin tail line looks too fragile or breaks up when painted, use a fully loaded fine brush in one confident continuous stroke rather than trying to build it from several short strokes. Keep the perch simple and the body calm and settled, letting the tail carry all the movement in the piece.

Finish with the dark eye mask characteristic of this bird. One tip: paint the tail’s two racket tips slightly darker than the rest of the tail, since that value shift is what makes them read clearly as separate shapes rather than just the tail’s end.

Closing the list with two very different birds on one branch is a good test of everything practiced so far: proportion, color balance and composition all at once. Paint the branch first, thick and sturdy enough to visibly hold two birds, stretching almost the full width of the page.

Block the white cockatoo with its yellow crest on one side, using the same flat white-and-shadow approach from earlier, and the black and orange toucan on the other side, its bold beak again the star of that half. Angle both birds slightly toward the center of the branch, heads tilted toward each other, so the two very different shapes feel like a conversation rather than two separate paintings glued together.

Balance matters most here: the cockatoo’s pale, airy shape needs the toucan’s heavier black-and-color mass to feel equally weighted on the page, so keep the toucan a touch smaller if the cockatoo’s crest makes it look bigger overall.

If the two color schemes clash once both are dry, add one small shared color, perhaps a touch of the toucan’s orange echoed faintly in the cockatoo’s eye ring, to tie the pair together. Keep the branch itself a quiet brown so it does not compete with either bird.

Finish with both birds’ eyes meeting roughly the same height along the branch for visual balance. One tip to wrap up the whole list: revisit any favorite bird from earlier pages and pair it with a second one here, using this same side-by-side approach.

What to Do Next

Pick one bird that caught your eye on the scroll down, mix your reds and greens a shade bolder than feels natural, and let the first shape dry before the next one goes on top. A sheet of heavy paper, four or five gouache colors and twenty quiet minutes are really all this list asks of you today.

Frequently Asked Questions

What gouache colors work best for a parrot painting?

A warm red, sunny yellow, bright blue, jungle green and Payne’s grey cover most tropical birds. Keep a tube of titanium white on hand for crisp highlights and for mixing softer shades of any base color.

How do you keep gouache edges crisp instead of fuzzy?

Let each color block dry fully before painting the next shape against it. Working wet into wet softens edges, so a hair dryer on a cool setting speeds the wait between layers without smudging the paint.

What paper suits gouache the best for beginners?

Heavy watercolor paper or illustration board around 300gsm handles gouache without buckling or pilling under repeated layers. A smooth hot press surface keeps those flat color blocks looking clean and print-like.

How do I stop gouache from looking chalky?

Chalky gouache usually means too much water or too much white mixed into every color. Use paint closer to the consistency of thick cream, and reserve white mainly for highlights rather than lightening whole base colors.

Can I paint these tropical birds without a live reference?

Yes, a few clear photos of each species online give you enough information on color placement and proportion. Keep the photo open beside your paper and simplify what you see into flat, confident shapes rather than copying every feather.
