32 Frog Watercolor Ideas and Other Little Pond Friends

67

Frog watercolor paintings have a way of making a whole afternoon feel softer. There is something about a round-bellied frog on a lily pad, paint blooming wet into wet around him, that turns a quick sketchbook session into the best part of your day.

Below you will find 32 little pond scenes, starting with frogs in every kind of mood and outfit, then moving out to the turtles, ducklings, newts and other small creatures who share their pond. Each one is sized for a single sitting, so pick whichever face makes you smile first and get your brush wet.

Start with the easiest frog in this whole lineup: a plump little body tucked under a leaf held overhead like an umbrella. Pencil a soft oval for the body and a bigger heart-shaped leaf above it, stem gripped in one tiny webbed hand.

Paint the leaf first in a wet into wet wash of sap green and a touch of yellow, letting the color pool darker at the edges while the paper is still shiny. Once that dries, drop in the frog’s body with a rounder, denser green so he reads as solid against the softer leaf behind him.

The common slip here is painting the leaf and the frog at the same time, so the colors bleed into one green blob. Keep a hairdryer or just patience between the two washes, and if your paper buckles, a few strips of low-tack tape around the edges before you start will hold it flat.

Finish with tiny raindrops as dry-brush dots of pale blue falling past the leaf’s edge, and your scene feels instantly rainy and cozy.

A frog sitting in a teacup is a charming next step once you have warmed up, mixing two subjects, china and skin, that each want a different kind of edge. Draw the teacup first as a simple rounded bowl shape with a thin handle, then nestle the frog’s body inside the rim so only his head and front legs peek over the top.

Paint the cup in pale pink with a crisp, controlled edge, since porcelain reads as hard and smooth, while the frog gets a looser wet into wet green so his skin feels soft by comparison. That contrast in edges is what sells the whole idea without any extra detail.

If the pink wash goes patchy, lift a little color while it’s still damp with a clean, barely-wet brush to even it out. No pink paint on hand? A touch of alizarin crimson mixed heavily with water gives you the same dusty rose.

Add one thin gold line around the rim with a fine brush for a china-shop finish.

Try a striped or spotted teacup pattern once the base pink dries fully; it adds personality without extra painting time.

Here the measuring matters: keep the lily pad roughly three times wider than the frog sitting on it, or he ends up looking too big for his own pond. Sketch a circular pad with one classic notch cut from the edge, then pencil the frog sitting cross-legged in the center with a tiny open book balanced on his knees.

Paint the lily pad first in a single confident wash of green, darker toward its edges, and let it dry completely before adding the frog on top so the two shapes stay distinct. The book can be a few strokes of white left as untouched paper, with pale grey lines suggesting open pages.

If the frog ends up crowding the pad’s edge, a damp brush can lift some green back to paper white to widen the pad afterward. For a quick version, skip the book entirely and just give him closed eyes and a sleepy smile instead, done in half the time.

The full forty-minute version adds ripples spreading out from the pad’s edge in a pale wash of blue.

After a frog in repose, give yourself something playful: a frog wearing a strawberry as a hat, seeds and all. Paint the strawberry shape first, upside down over his head like a little helmet, in a wash of cadmium red that goes slightly darker where it meets his skin.

While the red is still a touch damp, flick in the tiny yellow seeds with the tip of a fine brush so they sit softly rather than as hard dots. Let that dry before painting the frog’s face underneath, keeping his cheeks round and his eyes big, since the whole charm of this one rides on his expression peeking out from under the fruit.

Where it tends to go wrong is the seed placement looking too even, like a pattern instead of nature. Scatter them unevenly, denser near the bottom of the strawberry, and it reads far more convincing. If you are out of red, a bright coral pink does nearly the same job.

A tiny green stem and leaf at the top finish the hat perfectly.

Think about where the light falls before you start this one, since a single light source coming from one side is what makes the guitar’s curves look three-dimensional instead of flat. Decide the light comes from the upper left, then pencil the frog sitting back on his haunches with a small acoustic guitar propped against his belly.

Paint the guitar body in warm yellow ochre, leaving the left edge paler where light hits it and deepening the shadow side with a touch of burnt sienna. That one shift in tone does most of the work of making the wood look round.

His webbed fingers resting on the strings are the fiddly part; keep them as simple rounded shapes rather than trying to draw each toe, and a few thin grey lines suggest strings well enough without fuss. If brown paint feels too muddy, raw sienna alone gives a lighter honey wood tone.

Add a small musical note or two floating near his head if you want a touch of whimsy.

Bridge from riding a snail to something altogether cozier: a small frog standing upright in a yellow raincoat, hopping through a puddle. Pencil him standing on two legs this time rather than crouched, coat buttoned to his chin, one foot mid-splash.

Paint the raincoat in a clean cadmium yellow wash, keeping the edges crisp since rubber reads best with defined shapes rather than soft bleeds. Once dry, add the puddle beneath his feet in a flat wash of pale blue-grey, and while it’s still damp, splash a little clean water from a flicked brush into it so droplets bloom outward on their own.

If the yellow coat looks flat and dull, a single thin stroke of a warmer orange-yellow down one side instantly gives it shape. No cadmium yellow in your set? A mix of lemon yellow and a touch of orange gets you there just as well.

One concrete tip for today: paint the splash droplets around his feet last, after everything else is bone dry, so they stay crisp and bright against the puddle.

Settle into something sleepier after all that splashing: a frog curled on top of a red and white spotted mushroom, fast asleep. Paint the mushroom cap first in a wet into wet red wash, then while it’s still damp, dab clean water onto a cotton swab and lift small round spots back out to white.

That lifting technique gives soft, natural-edged spots far prettier than painting white circles on top later. Let the cap dry fully before adding the pale stem beneath it and the sleeping frog draped over the top, eyes closed, one leg dangling off the side.

If the lifted spots come back stained pink rather than clean white, blot with a dry tissue immediately rather than rubbing, which spreads the pigment further. A cotton bud works if you don’t have a clean sponge handy.

Keep his breathing shape soft and rounded, since a sleeping frog should look like he could roll off at any moment.

• cotton swabs for lifting

Follow the flower crown with its storybook cousin: a frog prince wearing a tiny gold crown and a velvet cape. Paint the cape first in a deep wash of alizarin crimson or a rich purple, letting it pool darker at the folds so it has some weight and shadow rather than looking flat.

Once that’s dry, add the crown on his head in yellow ochre with small triangular points, and a single dab of white gouache on each point for a jeweled sparkle. The frog’s body underneath stays your familiar green, but giving him slightly more upright, regal posture than the other frogs sells the fairy tale instantly.

Velvet capes are easy to overwork, so resist going back in once the first wash dries; a second uneven layer often reads as a mistake rather than texture. If crimson feels too harsh, a dusty plum made from mixing crimson with a touch of Payne’s grey softens it nicely.

A tiny gold scepter in one hand is an easy final touch if you want the full regal effect.

You Will Need

• white gouache for crown highlights

Give your pond a little western flair with a frog wearing a wide-brimmed cowboy hat, tipped back on his head. Paint the hat in burnt sienna with a darker brown band around its base, keeping the brim’s curve confident and a bit loose rather than perfectly symmetrical, which actually suits the rustic feel.

Let the hat dry before painting the frog’s face underneath it, tucking his eyes just below the brim’s shadow so the hat looks like it’s really sitting on his head rather than floating above it. A loosely painted bandana in red around his neck adds a nice finishing detail.

The easy mistake here is making the hat symmetrical and stiff; real felt hats dip and curve unevenly, so let your brush wobble a little on purpose. If brown feels too warm, a mix of yellow ochre and a touch of Payne’s grey makes a dustier, more weathered hat color.

For a quick ten-minute version, skip the bandana and let the hat alone carry the character.

What to Do Next

Pick whichever frog or pond friend made you smile first, tape a small sheet of cold press paper to your table, and give yourself permission to keep it loose. One finished page today is better than a perfect one you never start.

Frequently Asked Questions

What paper works best for frog watercolor paintings?

Cold press watercolor paper around 140 pounds works best for frog watercolor paintings. Its slight texture holds wet into wet washes well and handles the lifting and dry-brush work these cute pond scenes often need.

What colors do I need for a frog watercolor pond series?

A small set covering sap green, cerulean blue, burnt sienna, yellow ochre and Payne’s grey covers nearly every idea here. Pink and yellow for the warmer accents complete a palette that handles the whole pond cast.

How do I keep frog faces looking cute rather than realistic?

Keep the eyes large and round compared to the head, and round off the whole body shape instead of adding sharp joints or long limbs. Soft rounded shapes read as friendly and storybook, while angular ones read as realistic.

My green washes keep turning muddy, what am I doing wrong?

Muddy greens usually come from reworking a wash after it has started to dry rather than finishing it in one pass. Mix enough paint before you start, and let each layer dry completely before adding the next on top.

Can beginners really finish these pond scenes in one sitting?

Yes, nearly every idea here is sized for thirty minutes or less once the basic shapes are planned in pencil first. The more detailed group scenes take longer, so start with a single character if time is short.
