28 Christmas Illustration Watercolor Ideas With Cheeky Modern Characters

51

Every good christmas illustration watercolor starts the same way: a quick pencil sketch, a confident ink line, then paint that is allowed to wobble a little. That wobble is the whole charm. These scenes are built to look like the witty holiday cards and prints everywhere right now, full of personality and never fussy.

Below you get 28 cheeky characters to paint, from a parachuting Santa to a reindeer tangled in fairy lights. Pick whichever makes you laugh first, grab your kit, and have a finished piece before your tea goes cold.

Before You Start

• Sketch each character small and loose in pencil first, keeping lines faint so they disappear under the ink and paint.
• Go over the pencil with a fine waterproof ink liner only once the pose and proportions look right, since this line will stay visible through the paint.
• Mix your reds, greens and pinks a shade lighter than you think you need, since watercolor always dries darker on the page.
• Leave patches of white paper untouched for snow, highlights and breathing room rather than painting every inch of the scene.
• Test any new colour mix on a scrap corner before it touches the character, especially metallic gold which can turn muddy if overworked.
• Let one layer dry completely before adding a second, so edges stay crisp instead of bleeding into a grey smear.

Start the whole set with Santa mid-air, parachute billowing above him and a lumpy sack of presents swinging from one hand. Sketch him small and round first: a circle belly, stick legs kicking, then the parachute as a big soft dome taking up a third of the page.

Ink the outline once the proportions feel right, keeping his beard a simple wobbly cloud shape rather than individual hairs. Paint the parachute in alternating red and gold stripes while the paper is still slightly damp, so the colours bleed softly into each other at the edges.

The suit goes in flat cadmium red with a thin white gap left for the fur trim, since painting white fur is harder than just not painting it. If the parachute looks stiff, soften one edge with a damp brush to suggest movement.

Finish with a confident ink squiggle under his boots for ‘whoosh’ lines, the kind of small joke that makes a card illustration feel alive.

You Will Need

• fine liner pen
• round brush size 6
• masking fluid (optional)
• white gel pen for highlights

Palette: Cadmium Red,Naples Yellow,Payne’s Grey,Titanium White

Try masking fluid on the parachute lines before painting if you want crisp white stripes instead of soft bled edges, peeling it off once fully dry.

Keep the fun going with a reindeer balancing a tiny cocktail glass on one antler branch, sunglasses optional but encouraged. Block in the head and antlers in pencil first, measuring the antler spread against the head so it stays a touch oversized and comic rather than realistic.

Ink the antlers as a few confident forked lines rather than every twig, which keeps the whole thing looking breezy. Paint the fur in warm sienna with a dry brush dragged lightly over the muzzle, letting the paper texture show through for a furry edge instead of a flat block of colour.

The cocktail glass is the joke, so give it a bright pink drink and a tiny green paper umbrella in two quick brush strokes. If the antlers come out too thin to balance anything visually, thicken the tips slightly with a second ink pass.

Swap the cocktail for a mug of cocoa if pink feels like too much for this page.

You Will Need

• fine liner pen
• dry flat brush
• small round brush for details
• scrap paper for testing

Palette: Burnt Sienna,Opera Pink,Sap Green,Ivory Black

Load the dry brush with very little water and drag it sideways across the muzzle for a textured, furry edge that reads as fun rather than fussy.

Santa climbing a wonky ladder into a lit window makes a great vertical composition if your page is tall rather than wide. Draw the ladder first as two long parallel lines with evenly spaced rungs, since uneven spacing is the one thing that reads as ‘wrong’ here.

Place the window eye level roughly at Santa’s shoulder height so the ladder looks like it is actually doing something, then sketch him gripping a rung with one boot lifted. Ink the window frame with a ruler for crisp straight edges, but keep Santa’s own lines loose and hand drawn for contrast.

Paint the window glow in warm golden yellow first, let it dry, then paint Santa’s red suit over the top so the warm light reads as coming from behind the glass. Add a cat silhouette in the window for an extra laugh if there is room.

If straight ladder lines feel tricky freehand, lightly pencil guide lines with a ruler before inking.

You Will Need

• ruler
• fine liner pen
• round brush size 4
• masking tape for straight edges

Palette: Cadmium Red,Golden Yellow,Payne’s Grey,Titanium White

Paint the window glow before anything else touches that area, since a warm yellow underlayer makes every colour painted over it look lit from within.

Flip the season entirely with a snowman stretched out on a striped deck chair, sunglasses on, melting slightly in the snow around him. Sketch the body as three stacked circles first, the classic proportions, then lay the deck chair at an angle behind him so he looks properly reclined.

Ink the snowman’s outline with a slightly wobbly line to keep him soft and friendly, then paint him in the palest grey-blue wash rather than leaving him pure white, since a little shadow colour stops him disappearing into the paper.

The deck chair stripes are the fun part: alternate red and white bands painted freehand, letting a few go slightly crooked on purpose. A small puddle shape under one melting corner sells the joke, painted in a thin blue-grey wash with soft edges.

If the stripes come out too neat, that is fine too, but a slightly wonky stripe reads as more hand drawn and charming.

You Will Need

• fine liner pen
• round brush size 6
• light blue-grey watercolor mix
• tissue for lifting

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Cadmium Red,Sky Blue,Titanium White

Wash the whole snowman in the palest grey-blue before adding any detail, since pure white paper left totally untouched can look unfinished next to painted elements.

Give Santa a bird’s eye ride in a hot air balloon drifting over a row of snowy rooftop triangles. Draw the balloon first as a large simple teardrop shape taking up most of the top half of the page, then add the basket as a small rectangle hanging beneath on thin ropes.

Ink the balloon in vertical panel lines like an umbrella, which instantly reads as a balloon even with minimal detail. Paint alternating panels in red, green and gold, working wet-on-dry so each colour stays separate and clean rather than blending into mud.

The rooftops below can be a simple repeated triangle shape in pale grey, smaller and looser than the balloon so it stays the clear focus. If the basket looks too small for Santa, enlarge it slightly rather than shrinking him.

This idea pairs well with the rest of the set if you want a full series of christmas watercolor ideas to paint across the week.

You Will Need

• fine liner pen
• round brush size 8
• ruler for the ropes
• masking tape for panel edges (optional)

Palette: Cadmium Red,Sap Green,Gold Ochre,Payne’s Grey

Let each balloon panel dry fully before painting the one beside it, so the colours stay crisp and separate instead of bleeding into each other.

Capture an elf holding up a phone for a selfie with a very unimpressed reindeer squeezed into frame beside him. Sketch both heads close together first, the elf grinning wide and the reindeer’s eyes half closed, since the mismatch in expression is the whole gag.

Ink the phone as a simple rounded rectangle held at an angle, with a tiny selfie flash line if you want an extra detail. Paint the elf’s outfit in bright green with a pink hat for contrast, keeping brushstrokes loose around the pointed ears so they stay soft rather than sharp.

The reindeer stays mostly in its natural sienna brown, letting the green and pink of the elf do the colour work. If the two heads end up too far apart, add a thin ink line for the elf’s arm stretching back to hold the phone, which pulls the composition together.

No phone on hand as a reference is fine, any small rounded rectangle shape will read clearly.

You Will Need

• fine liner pen
• round brush size 4
• bright green and pink paint
• scrap paper for testing

Palette: Sap Green,Opera Pink,Burnt Sienna,Ivory Black

Push the two heads close together in the sketch stage, since too much gap between them weakens the selfie joke before you even get to paint.

Give a gingerbread man one leg over the rim of an open cookie tin, mid-escape, icing smile slightly smug. Draw the tin first as a simple cylinder with a lid propped beside it, keeping the perspective eye level so the opening reads as a clean oval rather than a flat circle.

Sketch the gingerbread man’s limbs mid-stride, one arm gripping the tin edge, before inking both the tin and the character in the same confident line weight so they feel part of one scene. Paint the tin in a cool silvery grey-blue and the gingerbread man in warm burnt sienna, a clear colour contrast that keeps him the focus.

Icing details go on last in white gel pen once the paint is completely dry, since wet paint will smear any white line drawn into it. If the oval opening looks flat, add a thin shadow crescent along its lower edge to suggest depth.

A flat side-on tin works just as well if the oval feels fiddly to draw.

You Will Need

• fine liner pen
• white gel pen
• round brush size 6
• grey-blue paint mix

Palette: Burnt Sienna,Payne’s Grey,Titanium White,Cadmium Red

Keep the eye level of the tin opening consistent with the gingerbread man’s pose, since a mismatched angle is what makes an escape scene look flat instead of in motion.

Balance Santa in a wobbly tree pose on a chimney top, arms raised, belt slightly undone from the stretch. Work out the pose with simple stick figure lines first, checking that his standing leg sits directly under his head so the balance actually looks plausible.

Ink the body in one confident pass, keeping the raised arms slightly asymmetrical for a more relaxed, human feel rather than a stiff symmetrical pose. Paint the red suit in a single flat wash, then drop a slightly darker red into the folds while the first layer is still damp so shadows blend softly rather than sitting as hard lines.

The rooftop and chimney stay simple grey shapes below him, smaller in scale so Santa remains the clear hero of the page. If his balance looks off once inked, widen the standing foot slightly for a sturdier base.

Try a simpler seated pose instead if a standing balance feels like too much for one sitting.

You Will Need

• fine liner pen
• round brush size 6
• two shades of red paint
• pencil for the pose sketch

Palette: Cadmium Red,Alizarin Crimson,Payne’s Grey,Titanium White

Drop a darker red into the suit while the base wash is still wet, which lets the shadow spread softly instead of leaving a visible hard edge.

Carry on with a polar bear mid-glide on ice, one leg kicked back, a long striped scarf flying behind. Block in the bear’s body as a big soft oval first, then add the skating leg stretched out long to suggest real speed rather than a static standing pose.

Ink the fur edges as short loose flicks rather than a smooth outline, which reads instantly as fluffy without drawing every single hair. Paint the bear in the palest blue-grey wash, since pure white fur against white paper will vanish without a hint of shadow colour underneath.

The scarf is where the bright colour lives, painted in bold red and green stripes that trail off the edge of the page for a sense of motion. If the kicked-back leg looks stiff, soften the knee angle and add a small ink motion line behind the skate blade.

Use a cotton bud to lift a touch of paint off the ice surface for a shine if you want extra sparkle.

You Will Need

• fine liner pen
• round brush size 6
• pale blue-grey wash
• cotton bud for lifting

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Sky Blue,Cadmium Red,Sap Green

Lift a small patch of wet paint off the ice with a dry cotton bud right after painting it, leaving a bright shine that reads instantly as slippery ice.

Give Mrs Claus a well earned break, curled in an armchair with a magazine, slippers on, feet propped on a small stool. Sketch the chair first as a simple rounded shape she sinks into, then fit her figure inside it so the pose reads as genuinely relaxed rather than perched.

Ink her glasses and the magazine’s rectangle shape last, after the body line, so they sit correctly on her face and in her hands. Paint her cardigan in a soft dusty pink and the chair in a contrasting forest green, two colours that sit well together without competing for attention.

Keep her expression simple: two small dots and a relaxed curved line is enough for a content, mischievous little smile. If the chair swallows her figure too much, lighten the chair’s colour slightly so she stands out more clearly against it.

A teacup balanced on the arm of the chair is an easy extra detail if there is time.

You Will Need

• fine liner pen
• round brush size 4
• dusty pink and forest green paint
• small detail brush

Palette: Dusty Pink,Sap Green,Burnt Sienna,Titanium White

Keep her face down to two dots and one curved line for the smile, since too much facial detail at this scale tends to make the expression look strained rather than relaxed.

Cosy things up with a reindeer in an oversized knitted sweater, both front hooves wrapped around a steaming mug of cocoa. Draw the sweater first as a simple rounded shape over the body, slightly baggy at the hem for that oversized, borrowed-jumper look.

Ink the knit pattern as a few repeated zigzag lines rather than every stitch, which keeps the texture readable without slowing you down. Paint the sweater in a warm mustard or deep red, then add the mug in white with a thin brown wash for the cocoa and two quick curling lines of steam rising above it.

If the hooves holding the mug look stiff, round off the joints slightly and bring them closer together as if actually cradling the warmth. This is a lovely companion piece if you are also working through watercolor christmas card ideas for friends this year.

Swap the mustard for forest green if you want this piece to sit closer to the rest of a matching set.

You Will Need

• fine liner pen
• round brush size 4
• mustard or red paint
• white gel pen for steam highlights

Palette: Mustard Yellow,Burnt Sienna,Titanium White,Payne’s Grey

Draw the steam as two or three loose curling lines rising from the mug, kept thin and light so they do not compete with the sweater pattern for attention.

Move to something sweeter with Santa wrapped in a full bear hug around a small potted Christmas tree, cheek pressed against the branches. Sketch the tree first as a simple triangle with a few looser branch tips poking out, then fit Santa’s arms around it so the hug actually looks snug rather than just standing beside it.

Ink Santa’s arms overlapping the tree outline slightly, which sells the sense of a real hug rather than two separate shapes placed side by side. Paint the tree in two greens, a darker base wash and a lighter dry-brushed layer dragged over the top for texture, then add a few dotted baubles in gold and red once dry.

If the hug looks stiff, tilt Santa’s head slightly to one side resting against the branches for a softer, more affectionate feel. A plain pot in terracotta at the base finishes the scene without needing any other background.

Dot the baubles on with the end of a paintbrush handle dipped in paint if a small round brush feels fiddly.

You Will Need

• fine liner pen
• round brush size 6
• flat brush for dry brushing
• paintbrush handle for dots

Palette: Sap Green,Hooker’s Green,Cadmium Red,Gold Ochre

Dry brush a lighter green over the darker base once it is fully dry, dragging the brush lightly to leave broken texture that reads as individual needles.

Place a snowman standing patiently at a bus stop sign, small suitcase by his feet, off on some mysterious winter errand. Draw the bus stop sign first as a simple pole with a rectangle sign on top, positioned so it sits roughly at the same height as the snowman’s head for a believable scale.

Ink the snowman in the same soft wobbly line as before, then add the suitcase as a simple rounded rectangle with a thin handle line on top. Paint the sign in a flat blue or yellow and the suitcase in a contrasting warm brown, two small colour notes against the mostly white snowman.

If the composition feels empty, add a light scattering of small blue dots for falling snow across the whole page. A plain scarf in bright red ties the whole palette together without needing any extra detail.

This pairs nicely with other quiet winter scenes if you enjoy christmas scene drawing as well as painting.

You Will Need

• fine liner pen
• round brush size 4
• blue or yellow paint for the sign
• white gel pen for falling snow

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Burnt Sienna,Cadmium Red,Sky Blue

Scatter small white gel pen dots across the finished painting for falling snow, which fills empty space without adding any extra drawing work.

Bring in a penguin behind turntables, headphones half on one ear, flippers mid-spin on the decks. Sketch the turntables first as two simple circles on a rectangle base, then fit the penguin’s round body behind them so the proportions stay playful rather than technically accurate.

Ink the headphones as a simple curved band over the head, with one flipper raised in the air for energy. Paint the penguin in classic black and white, saving the colour for a string of fairy lights draped across the top of the page in alternating red, green and gold dots.

If the turntables look flat, add a small strip of shadow beneath them in grey to ground them on a surface. A single speech bubble shape left empty is a fun optional extra if the reader wants to add her own party line later.

Keep the black ink areas on the penguin loose rather than solid fills, letting a little white paper show through for texture.

You Will Need

• fine liner pen
• round brush size 4
• black and grey paint
• fine brush for fairy light dots

Palette: Ivory Black,Titanium White,Cadmium Red,Gold Ochre

Leave small gaps of white paper inside the black body patches instead of filling solidly, which keeps the penguin looking painted rather than stamped.

Only Santa’s boots and a scattering of soot show above a brick chimney top, the rest of him comically wedged below. Draw the chimney stack first as a simple brick rectangle, keeping the bricks as a loose grid pattern rather than counting every single one.

Ink the boots sticking up with soles facing the viewer, toes slightly pointed outward for a sense of real struggle rather than a neat standing pose. Paint the bricks in warm terracotta with a dry brush for texture, then add a few grey soot smudges around the opening using a nearly dry brush dabbed rather than stroked.

The boots stay black with a small gold buckle detail, the only bright note against the muted brick colours. If the scene feels too quiet, add a few small motion lines or stars around the boots to suggest he is still wriggling.

This works as a strong single focal image if your page is otherwise left mostly empty.

You Will Need

• fine liner pen
• flat brush for dry brushing bricks
• round brush size 4
• grey paint for soot

Palette: Burnt Sienna,Payne’s Grey,Ivory Black,Gold Ochre

Dab soot smudges with an almost dry brush rather than stroking them on, which gives a broken, sooty texture instead of a smooth grey patch.

Catch a reindeer leaning toward a small hand mirror, lipstick held up to pucker lips that were never quite built for it. Sketch the mirror first as a simple oval on a thin handle, held at an angle that reflects back toward the reindeer’s face.

Ink the reindeer’s expression with raised brows and a slightly puckered mouth for the joke, keeping the rest of the line work loose and quick. Paint the fur in the usual warm sienna, then make the lipstick itself the one bold hit of bright pink or red in the whole piece, small but unmissable.

If the mirror reflection feels like too much detail to paint twice, leave it as a plain reflective oval with just a hint of the reindeer’s eye colour inside it. A few lipstick kiss marks scattered near the mirror add an easy extra laugh.

This sits nicely alongside other easy christmas drawing ideas if the reader wants a simpler warm-up first.

You Will Need

• fine liner pen
• round brush size 4
• bright pink or red paint
• small detail brush

Palette: Burnt Sienna,Opera Pink,Cadmium Red,Titanium White

Save the brightest pink in the whole painting for the lipstick tip itself, so the eye goes straight to the joke even from across the room.

Line up a row of elves kicking their legs high in a cancan, pointed hats bouncing, all mid-laugh. Sketch three or four simple stick figures first in a row, staggering the leg kicks so not every elf is at the exact same height, which keeps the energy varied.

Ink each elf’s outfit quickly in the same green and red palette, letting small differences in hat angle or arm position give each one a touch of individual character. Paint them with loose, fast brushstrokes rather than careful fills, since a slightly messy edge actually suits the high energy of a dance line.

If the row starts to look repetitive, vary one elf’s pose entirely, perhaps mid-stumble or laughing with head thrown back. A scattering of small confetti dots in gold across the top finishes the party feeling.

Working wet-on-wet for the costumes gives a livelier, less controlled result that suits the movement here.

You Will Need

• fine liner pen
• round brush size 6
• green and red paint
• fine brush for confetti dots

Palette: Sap Green,Cadmium Red,Gold Ochre,Opera Pink

Paint wet-on-wet for the costumes here rather than careful flat fills, since the slight bleed and softness actually suits a high-energy dance scene.

Put a cat behind the handlebars of a tiny scooter, gift boxes stacked precariously in a basket on front. Draw the scooter first as two simple circles for wheels joined by a thin frame, then perch the cat’s body upright on top with paws gripping the handlebars.

Ink the stacked gift boxes as a slightly wobbly tower, each one a different size, which reads instantly as ‘about to topple’ and adds to the joke. Paint the cat in whatever colouring feels fun, tabby stripes or solid black, then make the gift boxes the bright spot in red, green and gold wrapping.

If the scooter looks static, add a few short ink motion lines behind the back wheel to suggest it is actually rolling. A bow slightly peeling off the top box is a small detail that adds charm without much extra work.

Try a basket on the back instead of the front if balancing boxes on the handlebars feels too crowded to draw clearly.

You Will Need

• fine liner pen
• round brush size 4
• tabby or black paint for the cat
• red, green and gold for the gifts

Palette: Burnt Sienna,Ivory Black,Cadmium Red,Gold Ochre

Vary the size of each stacked gift box slightly rather than making them identical, which reads instantly as a wobbly, about-to-topple stack.

Switch Santa into a red tracksuit, mid-jog with a slight sweatband and a determined, very unfit expression. Sketch his pose with one knee lifted high and arms pumping, exaggerating the motion more than a realistic jog would ever look, since exaggeration is what reads as funny here.

Ink the tracksuit with a simple stripe down the side of each leg and arm, the kind of detail that instantly signals ‘sportswear’ without much extra drawing. Paint the tracksuit in bright red with white stripes left as untouched paper, then add a flushed pink tint to his cheeks with a small damp brush dab.

If the running pose looks stiff, bend the lifted knee a touch more and tilt his torso slightly forward for real momentum. A speed line or two trailing behind each boot finishes the energy.

This is a quick one to paint if time is short today, since the shapes are simple and the joke lands in the pose alone.

You Will Need

• fine liner pen
• round brush size 6
• red and white paint
• small brush for cheek tint

Palette: Cadmium Red,Titanium White,Opera Pink,Payne’s Grey

Exaggerate the running pose well beyond realistic, with a high lifted knee and forward lean, since subtlety reads as static rather than funny here.

Bring back the seasonal mismatch joke with a snowman happily licking an ice cream cone in the middle of winter. Draw the cone first as a simple triangle with a scoop on top, then position it near the snowman’s mouth area so the gesture reads clearly even without a detailed face.

Ink the snowman in the usual soft stacked circles, then paint him in the palest blue-grey as before so he does not vanish into the white page. The ice cream scoop is the fun colour accent, painted in bright pink or mint, with the cone itself in warm tan.

If the composition feels bare, a few small blue dots falling around him suggest gentle snow continuing regardless of his odd choice of snack. A tiny drip running down the cone is a nice realistic touch that also adds a bit of personality.

Swap the flavour colour to whatever feels most cheerful on the day, this joke works in any colour combination.

You Will Need

• fine liner pen
• round brush size 4
• pink or mint paint
• pale blue-grey wash

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Opera Pink,Mint Green,Burnt Sienna

Add one small drip running down the side of the cone in a slightly darker shade of the scoop colour, which adds personality for almost no extra effort.

Soak a reindeer up to its shoulders in a claw foot bathtub, antlers poking through a mountain of bubbles, rubber duck floating nearby. Sketch the tub first as a simple oval with short curved legs, then fit the reindeer’s head and antlers above the rim so the scale looks right before adding bubbles.

Ink the bubbles as a cluster of loose overlapping circles rather than one solid cloud shape, which keeps them light and foamy looking. Paint the bath water in a thin blue-grey wash around the bubble shapes, leaving most of the bubble area as untouched white paper with just a few pale blue shadow curves.

The rubber duck is a small bright yellow accent floating at one side, painted last so it sits clearly on top of the bubbles. If the antlers get lost among the bubble shapes, go over their outline with a slightly bolder ink line once the paint has dried.

A relaxed, half closed eye on the reindeer sells the whole mood in one small mark.

You Will Need

• fine liner pen
• round brush size 6
• pale blue-grey wash
• yellow paint for the duck

Palette: Sky Blue,Titanium White,Gold Ochre,Burnt Sienna

Leave most of the bubble pile as untouched white paper, adding only a few pale blue shadow curves to suggest roundness without flattening the foam.

Send Santa to the beach entirely out of season, Hawaiian shirt on, red shorts, riding a surfboard down a cartoon wave. Sketch the wave first as one big curling shape taking up the lower half of the page, then balance Santa on top of it with knees bent for a believable surfing stance.

Ink the Hawaiian shirt pattern as a few loose flower or leaf shapes rather than a repeated print, since too much pattern detail at this scale turns busy fast. Paint the wave in two blues, a darker base with a lighter foam edge left as white paper along the curl.

The shirt is the colour star here, painted in bright pink or turquoise with small contrasting dots for the pattern, while his beard stays simple white. If his balance on the board looks shaky, widen his stance and lower his centre of gravity slightly in the ink stage.

This is a fun one to pair with any beach themed pieces if the reader also enjoys easy watercolor landscapes.

You Will Need

• fine liner pen
• round brush size 8
• two blues for the wave
• bright pink or turquoise for the shirt

Palette: Turquoise,Cobalt Blue,Opera Pink,Titanium White

Leave a thin strip of untouched white paper along the curling edge of the wave before painting the darker blue beneath it, which reads instantly as foam.

Show a fox tangled in a ridiculous amount of sticky tape, gift half wrapped, paper crumpled, utterly defeated by the task. Sketch the fox sitting cross legged first, then build the gift box and paper scraps around it before adding the tape as loose criss-crossing lines over everything, including a strip stuck to one ear.

Ink the tape lines last, on top of the already dry fox and box shapes, keeping them slightly transparent looking with just the outline rather than a solid fill. Paint the fox in warm orange with a white chest patch, the box in a contrasting green, and leave the tape itself as thin unpainted lines so it reads as clear sticky tape.

If the tangle looks too neat, add a few more random crossing lines in different directions for genuine chaos. A crumpled paper ball tossed to one side finishes the sense of a struggle well underway.

Keep the fox’s expression resigned rather than panicked, a flat mouth line does the job perfectly.

You Will Need

• fine liner pen
• round brush size 4
• orange and green paint
• white gel pen for chest patch highlight

Palette: Burnt Orange,Sap Green,Titanium White,Payne’s Grey

Leave the tape strips as unpainted outline only, no fill colour at all, since the bare paper reads instantly as clear sticky tape against the painted fox.

Seat two gingerbread figures across a tiny table from each other, candle between them, icing smiles a little shy. Sketch the table first as a simple small rectangle, then place both gingerbread figures sitting on either side, angled slightly toward each other for a sense of real conversation.

Ink both figures in the same warm line weight, then paint them in matching burnt sienna so they read as a pair rather than two separate characters. The candle flame is a small bright dot of orange or yellow, the one warm light source worth making slightly brighter than everything else on the page.

Icing buttons and smiles go on last in white gel pen once the paint is fully dry, kept simple and slightly uneven between the two figures for personality. If the table composition feels cramped, widen the gap between the figures slightly and let the table shrink rather than the characters.

A single flower or sprig of holly on the table adds a sweet extra detail if there is time left.

You Will Need

• fine liner pen
• white gel pen
• round brush size 4
• orange or yellow for the candle

Palette: Burnt Sienna,Gold Ochre,Titanium White,Cadmium Red

Make the candle flame the single brightest, warmest spot on the whole page, since one strong focal light makes the rest of the scene feel cosy by comparison.

Settle a sleepy bear into a hammock strung between two unseen points, Santa hat slipping down over one eye. Sketch the hammock first as a simple curved line sagging in the middle, then nestle the bear’s rounded body into that curve so the weight looks believable.

Ink the bear in soft, slightly fuzzy outline strokes to suggest fur, with the Santa hat drawn slightly askew for a lazy, just-woke-up feel. Paint the bear in warm brown with a dry brush pass for texture, then the hammock in rope-like cream and red stripes, letting the colour sit lightly so the bear stays the clear focus.

If the hammock curve looks too stiff, redraw it slightly deeper in the middle where the bear’s weight would naturally pull it down. Small zzz marks floating above the hat are an easy, charming finishing touch.

This is a gentle one to end on if the rest of your session has been fast and energetic.

You Will Need

• fine liner pen
• flat brush for dry brushing
• round brush size 4
• cream and red for the hammock

Palette: Burnt Sienna,Cadmium Red,Ivory,Payne’s Grey

Sag the hammock curve a little deeper in the centre than feels natural at first, since a shallow curve makes the bear look like it is floating above it.

Capture the small, sweet moment of a mittened hand pressing a carrot into a half finished snowman’s face. Sketch the snowman’s body first, then add just the hand and forearm reaching in from one side, mitten bright and simple, rather than drawing a whole child figure which would pull focus.

Ink the carrot as a simple elongated triangle with a few short lines for texture, held at the exact angle it would need to meet the snowman’s face. Paint the mitten in a cheerful red or pink and the carrot in bold orange, two small warm colours against the cool white and blue-grey of the snowman.

If the hand looks awkward, simplify it further into a rounded mitten shape with no visible fingers at all, which actually suits this playful style better. Two coal dot eyes already in place but no nose yet adds a nice ‘moment just before’ feeling to the whole scene.

Check christmas sketching ideas for beginners for more gentle warm-up scenes like this one.

You Will Need

• fine liner pen
• round brush size 4
• orange and red paint
• pale blue-grey wash for the snowman

Palette: Burnt Orange,Cadmium Red,Payne’s Grey,Titanium White

Simplify the reaching hand into a rounded mitten with no visible fingers, which reads cleaner and suits this loose character style better than a detailed hand.

Let Santa sit with a wish list scroll so long it pools on the floor around his boots, reading glasses perched low on his nose. Draw the scroll first as a long wavy ribbon shape trailing off the bottom of the page, then seat Santa above it holding just the top edge.

Ink his expression with raised brows over the glasses, a small exhausted detail that sells the joke instantly. Paint the scroll in a warm cream wash with a few thin grey lines suggesting handwriting, never actual legible words, just quick scribbled marks.

The red suit stays the main colour block as usual, with the scroll’s pale cream giving good contrast against it. If the scroll feels too plain, curl the bottom edge slightly where it piles on the floor for a more three dimensional, heavy paper feel.

Keep the scribbled ‘writing’ lines loose and varied in length so they read as a long list rather than a decorative pattern.

You Will Need

• fine liner pen
• round brush size 6
• cream paint for the scroll
• grey fine liner or pencil for scribble lines

Palette: Cadmium Red,Ivory,Payne’s Grey,Titanium White

Draw the scribbled list lines in varied short lengths rather than even rows, which reads instantly as handwriting rather than a decorative stripe pattern.

Finish the set with a reindeer thoroughly wrapped in a string of fairy lights, bulbs tangled around every antler point. Sketch the antlers first, then draw the light string as one continuous looping line threading in and out between the branches, since the thread needs to look unbroken even where it disappears behind an antler.

Ink the bulbs as small simple ovals spaced unevenly along the string, which looks far more like a real tangle than perfectly even spacing would. Paint the fur in warm sienna as usual, then make each bulb a different bright colour, red, green, gold and pink, so the lights become the clear star of the piece.

If the tangle looks too tidy, cross the light string over itself once or twice around the antlers for genuine chaos. A single bulb painted a slightly brighter white-yellow, as if still lit, adds a nice glowing focal point.

This is a cheerful one to end the full set on, since it pulls together every colour used across the other 27 pieces.

You Will Need

• fine liner pen
• round brush size 4
• four bright bulb colours
• white gel pen for the lit highlight

Palette: Burnt Sienna,Cadmium Red,Sap Green,Gold Ochre

Cross the light string over itself once or twice around the antlers, since a perfectly tidy loop looks planned rather than genuinely tangled.

What to Do Next

Pick whichever character made you smile first, pencil it in loosely on a scrap of cold press paper, and let the ink and paint do the rest. One finished piece today is plenty, there are 27 more waiting for the next cup of tea.

Cold press watercolor paper around 140lb handles these loose, playful washes best. Its slight texture holds pigment well for dry brush fur and grabs ink cleanly without feathering, which matters for the confident linework these characters need.

Should the ink line go on before or after the watercolor?

Ink the outline first, after a light pencil sketch, then paint inside and around it. Painting first risks covering your guide lines, and a waterproof liner lets colour wash right over the ink without smudging it.

How do I keep the characters looking loose instead of stiff?

Keep pencil sketches quick and avoid erasing too much before inking. Let a few lines wobble on purpose, vary brushstroke pressure, and resist the urge to fix every small imperfection, since that looseness is what gives these pieces their charm.

What if my watercolor paint keeps turning muddy?

Muddy colour usually means too many pigments mixed together or painting into an already wet, unclean area. Rinse your brush between colours, work in clean layers once each dries, and keep gold and brown mixes simple with just one or two pigments.

Can these ideas work as actual Christmas cards?

Yes, these character scenes translate well onto card stock or are easily scanned and printed as cards. Keep the composition a little inside the edges so nothing gets cropped if you plan to trim or fold the finished piece.
