Classical oil painting lets you borrow everything you love about the old masters, the hush of candlelight, the sheen of velvet, the glint of silver, without copying a single painting that already exists. Every scene below is invented, a quiet moment that could have happened in a draped room three centuries ago, built from a short list of earthy colours and a few confident brushloads.
Scroll through and pick whichever mood calls to you tonight. Some ideas are a single still life you can finish in an evening, others are a small figure study with room to grow, and each one tells you exactly where to start and where classical oil painting beginners usually lose their nerve.
Using these images: free for personal projects such as printing, coloring, cards, journals and gifts. Handmade items that include them may be sold up to 30 pieces per design. More than that is commercial use and is not permitted, and neither is selling or sharing the images themselves or passing them off as your own. Please ask before any other use.
Start the whole classical oil painting habit with a scene built almost entirely from value, a lady in a burgundy velvet gown reading by a single candle. Block in the canvas with a thin umber wash first, then place the candle flame and the lightest fold of the gown before anything else, since everything else gets judged against those two spots of light.
Work the gown next in burgundy and a touch of ivory, letting the brush drag so the velvet keeps a soft, broken edge rather than a sharp outline. Keep the face and hands simple, just enough warm light on the cheekbone and the page to read as candlelight, and resist adding detail to the room behind her.
The scene usually goes wrong when the background competes with the candle, so keep everything beyond her shoulder almost black. If you do not have burgundy on hand, mix alizarin crimson with a little raw umber instead.
Today’s tip: paint the candle flame last, in pure ivory with a touch of gold, so it stays the brightest mark on the canvas.

Move from figures to objects with a tabletop still life, a silver goblet and a pocket watch resting on a dark draped table. Set the canvas up with a dark olive or umber ground first, then draw the goblet and watch lightly in thinned paint so their proportions sit correctly before any silver goes down.
Measure the goblet’s height against its own width with your thumb on the brush handle, since old master silverware reads as convincing mainly through correct proportion, not detail. Paint the cloth folds first in broad olive and umber strokes, then the goblet in cool greys and ivory, saving the brightest fleck of white for where the candlelight hits the rim.
If the silver looks flat, it usually means the darks inside the goblet were never pushed dark enough, so deepen those before adding more highlights. Swap the pocket watch for a small brass key if you do not have one to reference.
Finish by dragging a dry brush loaded with ivory along one edge of the goblet for a convincing glint.
Looking for more tabletop setups like this, the still life oil painting ideas for beginners collection has plenty to borrow from.

From a tabletop, step into a small interior with a young scholar writing with a quill at a wooden desk. Eye level matters here, so decide whether you are looking slightly down at the desk or straight across at his shoulder, since that choice sets where the light from the window or candle can plausibly fall.
Place the light source to one side, either a leaded window or a candle just off canvas, and let it rake across the desk so the quill, the inkwell and the page catch the brightest marks while the far side of his face falls into shadow. Build the coat and desk in umber and olive first, then add the warm light last so it sits on top, crisp and deliberate.
If the hand holding the quill looks stiff, simplify it to a few confident shapes rather than fingers, since a soft suggestion reads better from a distance than an overworked hand. No candle on hand to reference, a desk lamp angled low works just as well.
Keep one tip in mind today: paint the quill’s feather with three or four loose strokes, never a tight outline.
Palette: Burnt Umber,Olive Green,Old Gold,Payne’s Grey
Bring in a sense of quiet action with a woman pouring water from a jug by a leaded window, a scene that leans on soft daylight rather than candle flame. Place the window first, even a simple grid of leaded panes, since the cool light it lets in shapes every shadow on her apron and the jug.
Work from the window light down, painting the brightest patch on her sleeve and the stream of water first, then building the dimmer room tones around it so the light has somewhere to land. Keep the pouring water itself to two or three pale, broken strokes rather than a solid line, which reads as more convincing motion.
This scene often goes wrong when the water looks like a solid rod, so thin your ivory with a touch of medium and drag it down loosely. A plain curtained window works fine if leaded glass is hard to picture.
Try adding one small reflection of blue sky in the window glass to lift the whole corner.
Palette: Ivory,Payne’s Grey,Olive Green,Burnt Umber
Give yourself a break from fabric and faces with a hunting dog resting on a checkered marble floor, a subject that is really about perspective. Draw the floor’s checkered pattern first, letting the squares shrink as they recede, since getting that grid right is what convinces the eye the dog is actually lying on a floor and not floating.
Place the dog’s body across a few of those squares to anchor it, then build its coat in warm umber and olive tones with the darkest shadow underneath its belly where it meets the marble. Keep the floor’s far corner darker and less detailed than the squares nearest the dog, which pulls the eye straight to the animal.
If the checkerboard looks warped, check that each row of squares stays the same height as it crosses the canvas, only narrowing in width as it recedes. No marble to reference, a plain stone floor with a few cracks works just as well for this one.
One tip for today: paint the dog’s eye as a single warm dot of light, it does more work than any amount of fur detail.
Palette: Burnt Umber,Ivory,Payne’s Grey,Olive Green
Return to a tender domestic moment with a mother rocking a cradle in a dim cottage room, a scene that lives almost entirely in soft edges. Block the whole canvas dark first, close to black in the corners, and let a single warm light, a low fire or one candle, carve the mother’s shoulder and the cradle’s rim out of that darkness.
Paint the cradle and her hand on it before her face, since the gesture of rocking is what tells the story and the face can stay simple, a few warm strokes suggesting tenderness rather than a finished portrait. Keep the room’s furniture barely sketched in, just enough shape to read as a cottage without pulling focus.
If the scene looks flat, check that your darkest dark sits right next to your lightest light somewhere near the cradle, that contrast is what old master interiors rely on. A basket stands in for the cradle if you would rather paint that shape.
Let the fire’s glow spill warm orange onto just one side of her face and leave the rest in shadow.
Palette: Burnt Umber,Old Gold,Payne’s Grey,Burgundy
Shift to a portrait that leans on texture, a girl with a lace collar holding a songbird. Paint her dress and hair in broad, settled strokes first, then come back to the lace collar last with a dry, almost scrubby brush loaded with thinned ivory, dragging it lightly so the pattern suggests itself rather than getting drawn thread by thread.
The songbird deserves the same restraint, a few confident strokes for its body and one tiny bright eye, cupped gently in her hands with the smallest sliver of light along its back. Build her face with warm ochre and umber tones, keeping the shadow side soft and the lit side simple.
Lace collars often get overworked into something stiff and lacy to the point of looking plastic, so if yours feels too neat, scumble a thin wash of grey over the top to knock it back into shadow. A plain white collar works just as well if lace feels daunting.
Save one tiny white fleck for the bird’s eye, it brings the whole hand to life.
Palette: Ivory,Old Gold,Burnt Umber,Olive Green
Settle into a quiet object study with a lute resting on a velvet chair, a subject built entirely on soft curved edges and one rich fabric. Sketch the lute’s rounded body and the chair’s shape thinly first, checking that the lute’s width looks right against the chair’s arm before committing any paint.
Paint the velvet chair first in broad burgundy strokes, letting the nap of the fabric show through uneven, slightly streaky brushwork, then bring the lute forward with warm umber and gold tones for its wood and a few taut dark lines for the strings. Keep the strings to three or four strokes rather than every single one, since a lute drawn with too many lines starts to look like a diagram.
If the velvet looks dull rather than rich, glaze a thin wash of burgundy over the shadow side once the first layer is dry. A mandolin or small guitar shape stands in perfectly if a lute’s curves feel tricky.
Drag a single highlight of old gold along the lute’s curved rim to catch the candlelight.
Palette: Burgundy,Old Gold,Burnt Umber,Payne’s Grey
Bring in a flower piece with tulips and roses in a dark urn, with a single butterfly resting on one petal. Block the urn and the darkest background in first, since a classical flower piece lives or dies on how black that background reads behind the pale petals.
Paint the roses before the tulips, building each bloom from a dark centre out to a few bright, loaded strokes at the petal edges, then add the tulips with cleaner, simpler shapes so the two flowers read as different species rather than blending together. Add the butterfly last, in two or three flat strokes of colour with a single dark line for its body, resting lightly on a petal rather than floating awkwardly beside it.
If the bouquet starts looking crowded, pull two or three stems forward with sharper highlights and let the rest sink back into shadow, that push and pull is what makes old master florals feel deep rather than flat. For more bouquet ideas in this vein, the oil painting flowers for beginners list is worth a look.
Try scattering one fallen petal on the table below the urn, a small touch old masters used often.
Palette: Burgundy,Olive Green,Ivory,Old Gold
Bring back candlelight for a character study, an old man counting coins under a lantern. Decide where the lantern sits first, usually just above and to one side of the coins, since that single light source dictates every shadow on his face and hands.
Paint the pool of light on the table and the coins first, a scatter of small warm ivory and gold dots rather than carefully drawn circles, then build his face and hands around that light so his features emerge from deep umber shadow rather than sitting on top of it. Keep the far side of the room almost entirely dark, with only the faintest hint of a shelf or wall.
If the coins look like flat dots instead of metal, add one tiny bright highlight to each and a darker crescent beneath, that is enough to suggest roundness. A small purse of coins stands in just as well if a lantern feels like too much to add.
Let his eyes stay in shadow, half in darkness says more than a fully lit face would here.
Palette: Burnt Umber,Old Gold,Payne’s Grey,Ivory
Step toward daylight with a maid opening shutters onto a canal street, a scene that trades candle glow for the cool light of a morning street. Paint the dark interior around her first, keeping it loose and shadowy, then cut in the bright rectangle of the open shutters last, since that contrast between dim room and bright street is the whole point of the composition.
Suggest the canal beyond with just a few strokes, a pale strip of water, a dark shape for a moored boat, rather than a detailed view, since the street should read as a bright backdrop and nothing more. Keep her figure mostly in silhouette against that light, with only a sliver of warm tone catching her cheek or hand.
If the bright rectangle looks too flat, add one or two thin vertical strokes of a darker tone to suggest the far building’s shadow, which gives the opening some depth. Any open window or doorway works in place of shutters if canal houses feel too specific to picture.
Keep her figure a full two shades darker than the street outside, that gap is what sells the light.
Palette: Payne’s Grey,Ivory,Burnt Umber,Olive Green
Return indoors for a formal portrait, a lady in a wide ruff collar with her hands folded quietly in front of her. Build the dark dress and background first in broad umber strokes, then tackle the ruff collar with a drier brush, working in short flicking strokes of ivory and pale grey rather than trying to paint every pleat.
Keep her folded hands simple, two or three value shifts are enough to suggest knuckles and fingers without turning them stiff. Her face should carry the most careful modelling in the piece, with a single soft highlight on the cheekbone and a touch of warmth in the lips.
Ruffs often end up looking like a plate rather than fabric, so if that happens, add a few darker shadow strokes underneath the chin where the collar would naturally fall into shade. A simple lace collar works as a calmer substitute if the wide ruff feels like too much texture for one sitting.
Spend an extra few minutes just on her eyes, a touch of warm light in each does more for the portrait than any other single stroke.
Palette: Burnt Umber,Ivory,Payne’s Grey,Burgundy
Add music to the mix with a seated violinist in a shadowy room, a figure defined almost entirely by the shapes of the instrument and the bow. Sketch the pose first, checking that the violin’s length against the player’s forearm looks believable, since a violin drawn too long or too short reads wrong immediately even to a casual viewer.
Paint the dark room and clothing in broad strokes first, then bring the violin forward with warm honey and umber tones, saving the brightest highlight for where the varnish catches light along its curved edge. Keep the bow to one clean diagonal stroke rather than a shaky line, since a confident single stroke reads as motion far better than a careful outline.
If the hands holding the instrument look awkward, simplify them further rather than adding detail, a loose suggestion of fingers works better than an overworked attempt at anatomy. Any stringed instrument, a cello or a guitar, substitutes easily if violins feel tricky to draw.
Keep the room behind the player nearly black, with only a faint hint of a chair or wall.
Palette: Burnt Umber,Old Gold,Payne’s Grey,Burgundy
Return to a tabletop with a quiet vanitas, a seashell, an hourglass and a globe arranged on a draped table. Place the three objects so they overlap slightly rather than sitting in a neat row, since overlap is what creates depth in a still life this small.
Paint the draped cloth first in broad umber and olive strokes, then build each object from dark to light, the globe’s curved surface with a single band of reflected light, the hourglass with its sand suggested by two or three fine strokes, the shell with warm pink and ivory tones along its ridges. Keep the background almost bare, a wash of deep brown is enough.
If the globe looks flat, check that its shadow side wraps all the way around the curve rather than stopping at a hard edge, a soft gradual turn is what makes a sphere convincing. A small book or candle stub works as a substitute for the globe if one feels fussy to invent.
Add one single highlight where all three objects nearly touch, it draws the eye straight to the centre of the composition.
Palette: Burnt Umber,Olive Green,Ivory,Payne’s Grey
Step outdoors for the first time with a shepherd girl resting under an oak, her flock scattered nearby. Place the oak’s trunk and the horizon line first, since the eye level here sits low, close to the sheep’s backs, which is what gives this kind of pastoral scene its gentle, settled feel.
Paint the sky and distant field first in soft olive and ivory, then build the oak’s canopy with a loose, dabbing brush so the leaves break up into light and shadow rather than forming one solid green mass. Add the girl resting against the trunk next, and finish with the sheep as simple pale, rounded shapes scattered at different distances across the field.
If the sheep look like flat blobs, add one small dark leg mark and a touch of shadow underneath each, that alone makes them sit on the ground rather than float. A single dog beside her works as a substitute for a full flock if several sheep feels like too much for one sitting.
Keep the farthest sheep paler and softer than the nearest ones, that fade is what pushes the field back into distance.
Palette: Olive Green,Ivory,Burnt Umber,Old Gold
Stay outdoors a little longer with a canal town at dusk, moored barges resting quietly on still water. Lay the sky and water in first, since they share the same warm dusk colour with the water simply a softer, slightly darker echo of the sky above it, and that shared tone is what makes reflections convincing.
Build the buildings along the canal as simple dark shapes next, varying their heights and roof lines so the skyline feels irregular rather than a row of identical boxes, then add one or two lit windows as small warm dots once everything else is dry. Paint the barges last, low dark silhouettes sitting right at the waterline with a thin mirrored stroke beneath each.
If the water looks too busy, simplify your reflections to vertical strokes dragged straight down rather than wavy lines, stillness reads better than movement here. A single rowboat substitutes easily for a row of barges if the scene feels like too much to fit in one sitting.
Save the warmest, brightest stroke for one lit window, it anchors the whole dusk mood.
Palette: Burnt Umber,Old Gold,Payne’s Grey,Burgundy
Return indoors for a tender portrait, a child in a satin dress holding a small dog close to her chest. Satin behaves differently from velvet, so paint it with smoother, longer strokes and sharper highlights, since satin catches light in bright streaks rather than the soft broken glow velvet gives.
Build the dress first with those long pale strokes running in the direction the fabric folds, then bring the small dog forward with a few quick confident strokes for its fur, keeping its shape soft against the smoother dress beside it. Finish with the child’s face, warm and simply modelled, with her gaze resting gently on the dog rather than straight out at the viewer.
If the satin ends up looking like plastic, soften the transition between your highlight and midtone with a dry brush before it sets, hard edges are what make satin read as stiff instead of silky. A ribbon or small basket works as a substitute if a dog feels difficult to place convincingly in her arms.
Add one thin, bright highlight along the dress’s main fold, satin only needs one to convince the eye.
Palette: Ivory,Burgundy,Burnt Umber,Old Gold
Slow the pace down with a domestic scene, a woman embroidering by a window with a cat curled at her feet. Place the window light first, letting it fall across her hands and the fabric in her lap, since that patch of light is the visual centre of an otherwise quiet, low-key composition.
Paint her dress and the room in broad, settled strokes, then add the embroidery hoop and thread as a few small bright dashes of colour against the darker fabric, enough to suggest needlework without painting every stitch. Bring the cat in last, curled into a simple warm shape at her feet, with one or two darker stripes or patches if it suits your reference.
If the embroidery patch looks like a smear of colour, add two or three tiny contrasting dashes once the base layer is dry, that small flick of detail is enough to sell the idea of stitching. A ball of yarn and knitting needles work just as well if embroidery feels fiddly to suggest.
Let the cat’s eyes stay half closed, a sleepy cat settles the whole mood of the room.
Palette: Olive Green,Ivory,Burnt Umber,Burgundy
Take on real drama with a tall ship tilted on a stormy sea, a subject that asks for bold, quick decisions rather than careful detail. Decide the horizon line first and tilt it slightly if the ship itself is tilting, since a level horizon under a heeling ship looks unconvincing no matter how well the ship is painted.
Paint the sky and sea first in sweeping, loaded strokes of grey and olive, leaving the ship’s shape as reserved dark space, then bring the ship forward with a few confident strokes for the hull and sails, letting one sail catch a streak of pale light to suggest a break in the storm. Keep the waves simplified to broad curved strokes with white dragged along their crests rather than individually drawn.
If the sea looks static, drag your brush in the same diagonal direction across the whole lower canvas, that consistency of stroke direction is what suggests a single powerful swell rather than scattered ripples. A single fishing boat substitutes well for a full tall ship if the rigging feels like too much to invent.
Save pure white for only the brightest wave crest and the one lit sail, nowhere else.
Palette: Payne’s Grey,Olive Green,Ivory,Burnt Umber
For a gentler sea study first, the ocean oil painting ideas for beginners cover calmer water and simpler horizons before you tackle a full storm.
Bring back a confident character with a cavalier in a plumed hat, one hand resting on his hip. Block his dark coat and the plumed hat first, keeping the feather loose and sweeping with just three or four long curved strokes rather than many small ones, since a feather painted stroke by stroke quickly turns stiff.
Build his face and the hand on his hip next, keeping the pose relaxed by checking that his elbow angles outward rather than pinned to his side, a small adjustment that makes the whole stance read as confident rather than awkward. Add any lace at his collar or cuffs last with the same dry, broken-edge technique used for other lace in this list.
If his stance looks flat, add a cast shadow beneath his boot and a touch of reflected light under his jaw, that small pair of shadows gives him weight and presence. A simple wide-brimmed hat without a feather works fine as a substitute if plumes feel tricky.
Angle the feather so it curves away from his face, it adds motion without any extra brushwork.
Palette: Burnt Umber,Burgundy,Old Gold,Ivory
Return to a still life with more pieces than usual, an apothecary shelf of glass bottles and brass scales. Give yourself ten minutes for a quick version with just three bottles and the scales roughly blocked in warm umber and cool grey, loose and suggestive rather than detailed.
For the fuller forty-minute version, add a shelf’s worth of bottles at varied heights, each one needing only a single vertical highlight and a touch of coloured liquid inside to read as glass, plus a label suggested with one or two pale dashes rather than legible text. Paint the brass scales last, their curved arms catching warm gold light against the darker bottles behind them.
If the bottles start looking like a flat row, vary their heights and tilt one or two very slightly, uniform rows rarely occur on a real shelf and the eye notices. A single apothecary jar and a mortar and pestle work well if a whole shelf feels ambitious for one sitting.
Keep the background shelf dark enough that the glass bottles read as the lightest shapes in the whole piece.
Palette: Olive Green,Old Gold,Payne’s Grey,Burnt Umber
Bring music back in with a young woman in a dove-grey dress playing a harpsichord, a piece that leans on the instrument’s strong straight lines against her soft figure. Paint the harpsichord’s case first, using a ruler or the edge of a card to keep its long straight edges crisp, since a wobbly instrument case undercuts the whole scene no matter how well the figure is painted.
Build her dove-grey dress next in cool, muted strokes, letting it stay simpler and softer than the harpsichord’s hard lines, then add her hands resting on the keys with just a few pale touches rather than individually painted fingers. Finish with warm candlelight catching one side of her face and the nearest corner of the keyboard.
If the keyboard looks uneven, lightly mark even intervals before painting the keys, consistent spacing matters more here than perfect colour. A piano or small table organ substitutes well if a harpsichord’s shape feels unfamiliar to invent from imagination.
Keep her dress a full step cooler in tone than everything else in the room, that contrast is what makes dove-grey read as elegant rather than dull.
Palette: Payne’s Grey,Ivory,Burnt Umber,Old Gold
Step back outdoors for a working scene, women washing linen in a stone courtyard basin. Decide on a single overhead light source first, since a courtyard scene depends on consistent shadows pooling beneath the figures and the stone basin to feel like one coherent space rather than cut-out shapes.
Paint the stone walls and basin in warm greys and umber first, then add the figures leaning over their washing, keeping their poses varied, one bent lower, one standing straighter, so the group reads as a real moment rather than a repeated pattern. Finish with the wet linen itself, pale, loosely draped strokes that catch the brightest light in the whole scene.
If the figures look too similar to each other, change the angle of just one head or the position of one arm, small variations do most of the work of making a group feel natural. A single woman at a well works just as well if painting several figures feels like too much for one sitting.
Let the wet linen carry the strongest highlights of the whole painting, brighter than any skin or stone.
Palette: Burnt Umber,Payne’s Grey,Olive Green,Ivory
Move into architecture with a candlelit chapel interior, tall arched windows rising into shadow overhead. Set the vanishing point first, somewhere along the centre of the far wall, and let the lines of the arches and floor tiles lead gently toward it, since a chapel interior relies on that converging perspective far more than on any single detail.
Paint the darkest shadows in the vaulted ceiling first, then work down toward the warmer candlelit glow near the altar or nearest pew, letting the colour shift gradually from cool grey above to warm gold below. Keep the arched windows mostly dark with only a faint hint of coloured glass, since too much detail there competes with the candlelight that should be the real subject.
If the perspective feels off, check that every receding line, the floor tiles, the tops of the arches, points toward that same single spot on the far wall. A simple stone archway substitutes for a full chapel if the architecture feels too ambitious for one sitting.
Place one lone candle near the front to anchor the whole sense of scale and distance.
Palette: Payne’s Grey,Old Gold,Burnt Umber,Ivory
Bring the story back to a single figure with a lady reading a letter, her expression caught in a worried glance. Build her dress and the room first in your usual dark umber and olive tones, then turn to her face last, since the whole success of this piece rests on a single clear expression rather than any fabric or background.
Keep the letter itself simple, a pale rectangle with two or three faint lines suggesting handwriting rather than legible text, held slightly lower than her face so her eyes lift toward the viewer or into middle distance with that worried look. Add just enough shadow under her brow and at the corner of her mouth to suggest concern, overdoing it tips the expression into something closer to sadness than worry.
If the face feels flat, step back from the canvas and check the eyes and mouth together rather than one at a time, expression reads as a relationship between features, not any single mark. A folded note works just as well as a full letter if the paper’s fold feels fiddly to paint.
Keep her hand holding the letter loose, a tense grip reads more anxious than a relaxed one.
Palette: Burnt Umber,Olive Green,Ivory,Payne’s Grey
Fill a whole canvas with warmth for a kitchen hearth with copper pots and hanging herbs, a scene built on reflected firelight more than any single object. Paint the dark stone hearth and fire first, keeping the flames to a few quick warm strokes, then let that fire be the only light source for everything else in the painting.
Bring the copper pots in next, each one needing just one curved highlight stroke of warm orange to suggest polished metal catching firelight, with the rest of the pot sunk into the same deep umber as the hearth around it. Add the hanging herbs last as loose clusters of dark olive shapes dangling from a beam, enough to suggest bunches without painting individual leaves.
If the copper looks dull rather than warm, check that its highlight matches the colour of the fire rather than a generic white, metal always reflects the light source nearest it. A cast iron kettle substitutes easily for copper pots if that colour feels tricky to mix convincingly.
For more cosy kitchen scenes to build on this one, the cooking drawing ideas collection has a good range of hearths and kitchens to study.
Palette: Burnt Umber,Old Gold,Olive Green,Payne’s Grey
Close the list with a figure who ties the whole classical oil painting mood together, an old philosopher seated with a globe and an open book. Next time you set up a scene like this, vary it by changing the light source from a window to a single candle, or by swapping the globe for a skull or a stack of manuscripts, since this composition adapts easily once the basic structure works.
Paint his robe and chair first in deep umber and burgundy, then bring the globe in with the same single wraparound highlight used for other spheres in this list, and the open book with just two or three pale lines suggesting text rather than anything legible. Build his face last, weathered and thoughtful, with deep-set shadows around the eyes that suggest age and quiet concentration.
If the globe and book compete for attention, let one sit slightly further back in shadow than the other, a classical composition almost always has one clear focal point and one supporting object rather than two equal ones. A stack of old books works alone if a globe feels like one object too many for this sitting.
Give his hand resting on the book a touch more light than the rest of the robe, it quietly marks where his attention rests.

What to Do Next
Pick one scene that pulls at you most, set up a small canvas, and block in your darkest shadow before anything else, that single decision carries most of a classical oil painting through to the end. Keep the rest of this list close for the next quiet evening you want to spend at the easel.
Frequently Asked Questions
What colours do I need for classical oil painting?
A small earth palette covers most classical oil painting scenes: burnt umber, burgundy or alizarin crimson, olive green, ivory or titanium white, and old gold or yellow ochre, mixed to build deep shadow and warm candlelight.
How do I get that deep candlelit background?
Start with a thin dark underpainting across the whole canvas, close to black in the corners, then build your lightest highlight only where the candle or window light actually falls, keeping everything else several shades darker.
Do I need to copy a real old master painting to practice this style?
No, inventing your own scene works better for learning, since you focus on light, proportion and brushwork instead of matching someone else’s exact composition stroke for stroke.
What size canvas suits these ideas?
A small canvas, around eight by ten inches or similar, suits every idea on this list and keeps each one finishable in a single sitting without the painting dragging on for days.
How do I paint convincing velvet or satin fabric in oils?
Velvet wants soft, broken edges from a slightly dry brush dragged over the surface, while satin wants smoother long strokes with one sharp highlight, since the two fabrics catch light in different ways.
