Nature art painting gives you a reason to look closely at the small things you usually walk past: a curled fern tip, a mushroom cap, a dragonfly wing catching the light. Every idea here keeps the subject large and simple, so the shapes read clean and the color does the talking.
You will find 29 small wild moments below, from a single leaf to a heron standing in shallow water, all built the same calm way in gouache. Pick whichever one pulls at you first and finish it today, then come back for another when the mood strikes.

Start the curling fern frond with a pencil spiral, light and loose, because that single curl at the tip is what makes the whole shape feel alive. Work from the base up: paint the main stem first in fern green, then add the paired leaflets in short strokes that get smaller as they near the curled tip.
Measure before you commit to paint: hold your brush at arm’s length against the reference and compare the frond’s height to the width of the mossy stone beside it, so neither one swallows the other. Drop the stone in second, a simple rounded shape in a dusty grey-green, sitting slightly behind the frond so it reads as background.
If the curl looks stiff, add one more small leaflet right at the tip, turned slightly inward, to pull the eye around the spiral. No fern green on hand, mix sap green with a touch of Payne’s grey instead.
Keep the moss on the stone as a few loose dots rather than a solid patch, so the stone still looks like stone underneath.

Following on from the fern, a cluster of red-capped mushrooms on a fallen log is a good next step because it adds a warm color against all that green. Block in the log first as one long rounded shape in a warm brown, then paint each mushroom cap as a simple dome in rust orange, overlapping two or three so the cluster feels natural rather than lined up.
Paint light source matters here: decide where the light comes from, usually upper left, and keep the stems and the underside of each cap a shade darker, almost in shadow, while the top of each dome catches the lightest rust.
If the caps start to look flat and cartoonish, add tiny cream dots scattered across one or two of them, a classic touch that reads instantly as toadstool. Swap rust orange for cadmium red light if you do not have it mixed.
Keep the log’s cut end, if you show one, as plain pale rings rather than detailed wood grain, so the mushrooms stay the star.

Move from the forest floor to the pond with a dragonfly hovering over a lily pad that holds one pink flower. Paint the lily pad first, a wide flat circle in pond blue-green with one notch cut into the edge, then add the pink flower as a few simple petal shapes sitting just off center.
The dragonfly’s wings are the trickiest part: paint them as thin, almost see-through shapes by using a very pale wash of blue-grey over the cream background, then add the body on top in a deeper teal once the wings are dry, so the body reads clearly through them.
If the wings end up too heavy and solid, lift a little paint off each one with a damp brush while it is still slightly wet, or scrape gently with a fingernail once dry, to thin the color back down. No pond blue to hand, mix cerulean with a touch of green.
Give the dragonfly four wings angled slightly differently from one another, so it reads as hovering rather than resting flat.

For more insect studies in this same close-up spirit, the watercolor bugs ideas cover beetles and ladybirds you can paint the same way.
A blue tit perched on a purple thistle head brings a small bird into the mix, and birds reward a careful look at proportion before paint touches paper. Sketch the body as one rounded oval first, then check that the head is roughly a third the size of the body, a quick ratio that keeps the bird from looking stretched or too round.
Paint the thistle head next in a deep purple-pink, a spiky rounded shape the bird’s feet grip onto, then build the blue tit in flat patches: pale cream breast, blue-grey wings, and a dark cap on the head, each color its own clean shape with no blending between them.
If the bird’s feet look like an afterthought, paint them as simple dark hooks curled around the thistle stem, just two or three lines, before you add the final feather details on the wing.
Swap purple for a warm magenta if your palette runs short, the thistle still reads clearly.
Palette: Cerulean,Payne’s Grey,Thistle Purple,Soft Cream
Three smooth river pebbles stacked on a mossy rock is a quieter subject after the thistle, built almost entirely from simple ovals. Paint the mossy rock as one wide flat shape first, then add the pebbles on top, each one slightly smaller than the one below it, so the stack reads as balanced rather than about to topple.
Work the shading trick here with a dry brush: once each pebble’s base color is dry, load the brush lightly and almost scrub a slightly darker tone along the lower curve of each stone, letting the texture stay rough and broken rather than smooth, which gives the stone a convincing weight.
If the stack looks too perfectly round, flatten one edge on the middle pebble where it meets the one below, since real stones rarely sit as perfect spheres.
Pond blue-grey and warm cream work well as the two main pebble tones, with the rock beneath in a darker moss green.

A monstera leaf with water drops on its surface turns one big leaf shape into the whole composition, so get the silhouette right before anything else. Draw the leaf’s outline first, including the characteristic splits along the edges, then fill it as one flat shape in a deep fern green, leaving the vein lines as thin unpainted cream strokes.
The water drops are the detail that sells the whole piece: paint each one as a small cream crescent with a tiny dark edge underneath, placed where the leaf dips slightly, since drops always settle in the lowest points of a surface.
If the drops look flat and sticker-like, add one tiny white gel pen highlight dot to each one once the paint is fully dry, which gives a believable gleam without any blending.
Try a quick ten-minute version with just three drops and a plain leaf, or spend closer to forty minutes adding vein detail and five or six drops of varying size.

After all that flat leaf work, a snail climbing a tall blade of grass after rain brings in a bit of character and motion. Paint the grass blade first as one tall curving shape, then build the snail’s shell as a simple spiral in rust orange and cream bands, sitting where the blade bends slightly under its weight.
Think about the eye level here: paint the scene slightly looking up at the snail, so the underside of the shell and the curve of the grass both lean toward the viewer, which gives the whole small scene a sense of scale even though nothing else is in the frame.
If the shell’s spiral looks muddled, paint the base color first, let it dry fully, then add the darker spiral line on top in one confident stroke rather than trying to get it right in one layer.
Add a few small cream raindrops scattered near the base of the blade to finish the after-rain feeling, swapping a dry background in if you prefer a simpler version.

Shrink the scale again with a bee landing on a purple clover blossom, a subject that rewards patience with small shapes more than bold brushwork. Paint the clover head first as a rounded cluster of tiny tube shapes in purple-pink, slightly fuzzy at the edges rather than one smooth blob, then add the few green leaves beneath it.
Build the bee in careful order: the body first as two ovals, then the black stripes once that base is dry, then the wings last as pale translucent shapes so they sit on top without hiding the stripes underneath.
If the bee ends up looking too neat and toy-like, nudge the wings slightly off the symmetrical angle and let one leg dangle below the body reaching toward the flower, which reads as mid-landing rather than posed.
No deep purple on hand, a mix of magenta and a touch of blue gets you close enough for the clover.

A dandelion clock losing its seeds in the wind is one of the loosest subjects on this list, built almost entirely from small circles and thin lines. Paint the round seed head first as a pale cream sphere, then add each seed as a tiny dot with a single fine line trailing from it, like a miniature umbrella, packed closely together on one side and trailing off loosely on the other.
That loose trailing side is the whole trick: paint most of the seeds still tight on the stem, then let three or four drift away across the page with longer gaps between them, which does more to suggest wind than any brushstroke of moving air ever could.
If the drifting seeds look scattered at random, line their float path up roughly with one direction, as if a single gust pushed them all the same way.
A fine liner brush or even the tip of a cocktail stick dipped in cream paint works well for the thinnest seed lines if your smallest brush feels too thick.

A woodpecker clinging to a birch trunk puts the bird’s grip front and center, so get the feet right before the feathers. Paint the birch trunk first as a tall pale shape with a few flat dark marks for the bark’s horizontal lines, then build the woodpecker’s body in flat color blocks: black and cream for the back and wings, a red patch on the head.
Perspective matters a great deal here: paint the trunk running the full height of the page and the bird gripping it side-on, tail pressed flat against the bark for balance, which is exactly how a real woodpecker braces itself and instantly makes the pose convincing.
If the bird looks like it is just standing beside the trunk rather than clinging to it, darken the small gap between the bird’s body and the bark, and let the tail feathers splay slightly against the surface.
Swap the birch for a plain grey-brown trunk if white bark paint feels fiddly to control.

A green frog sitting among tall reeds at the water’s edge brings the pond level back down to the water line. Paint the frog’s body first as one rounded mound shape in a flat moss green, with two bulging eye shapes on top, then add the reeds behind it as several tall thin strokes of varying height so the frog’s low shape has something to sit against.
Keep the frog’s legs tucked and simple, just a suggestion of a bent shape at each side, since a sitting frog reads clearly even with almost no leg detail showing.
If the reeds look stiff and evenly spaced, vary the gap between each one and let two or three lean slightly, which is closer to how reeds actually grow along a bank.
Try the ten-minute version with just the frog and three reeds, or stretch to forty minutes by adding a pale blue strip of water and a few ripple lines near the frog’s base.

A bird’s nest with three pale blue eggs in a hawthorn branch is a satisfying subject because the nest itself is just a woven circle of brushstrokes. Paint the nest as a flattened oval in warm brown, using short curved strokes layered over each other rather than one flat fill, so the woven texture shows even at this simple level.
Place the three eggs inside once the nest is dry, small pale blue ovals nestled close together, then add the hawthorn branch running behind and slightly under the nest, with a few simple pointed leaves and, if you like, one or two small red berries.
If the nest looks too much like a bowl, break its rim with a few stray twig ends poking outward, which is the single detail that makes a nest read as a nest rather than a basket.
No pale blue mixed, a touch of white into cerulean gets a close robin’s-egg tone.

For more small bird subjects in this same spirit, the bird junk journal pages are worth a look for extra reference.
A ladybug crawling along a curled green leaf keeps the shapes small and the color punch high. Paint the leaf first with one edge curled upward, which you can show simply by shifting the green a shade lighter along the curl’s inner edge, then let the ladybug sit right on that curled part so the two subjects feel connected rather than just placed near each other.
Build the ladybug in three flat layers: the red shell shape first, the black head and center line once that is dry, then the spots last, small and slightly irregular in size so they do not look stamped on.
If the leaf curl looks flat, add one thin shadow line just under the curled edge in a darker green, which is the single mark that convinces the eye the leaf is folding rather than just shaped oddly.
Swap the bright red for a deeper brick tone if you want a slightly more muted, autumn version of the same idea.

A deer drinking from a clear forest stream steps up in scale from the insects and leaves before it, so proportion is worth checking carefully here. Measure the deer’s neck against its body length before you paint: a lowered head drinking usually brings the neck down to roughly the same length as the body depth, a quick comparison that keeps the pose from looking stiff or too long.
Paint the deer’s body as one warm rust-brown shape first, legs tucked close and simple, then add the stream as a flat pond-blue band beneath, with a few pale curved lines to suggest the water’s surface where the deer’s reflection would break it up.
If the deer’s head looks awkwardly placed, lower it further than feels natural at first, right down near the water line, since a drinking pose reads as unmistakable the moment the muzzle nearly touches the surface.
Keep the forest background minimal, just a few vertical tree shapes in deep green, so the deer stays the clear focus.

A branch of olive leaves with small green olives is a calm, repetitive subject that settles nicely after the deer. Paint the branch first as one thin curving line, then add the narrow pointed leaves in pairs along its length, alternating slightly in angle so they do not stack into one solid green mass.
The light source decides how each leaf reads: pick one side as the lit side and keep that side of every leaf a shade paler, sage rather than deep fern green, while the shaded undersides stay darker, which gives the whole branch a sense of roundness without any blending.
If the leaves look too uniform, vary two or three in size and let one curl slightly against the direction of the others, since real olive leaves never line up perfectly.
Add the small green olives last, simple ovals tucked where a leaf meets the branch, with just a touch of cream highlight on each one once dry.

A kingfisher diving into a clear stream is one of the more active poses on this list, so the angle of the body carries most of the energy. Paint the kingfisher streamlined and pointed, wings pulled back close to the body and the beak leading the whole shape downward at a steep diagonal, with the bright blue back and the warm orange breast as two clean flat color blocks.
Where the bird meets the water is the part that usually goes wrong: paint the stream’s surface as a flat band first, then add a small cream splash shape right where the beak enters, with two or three curved ripple lines spreading outward from that point, which does the work of showing impact without any spray detail.
If the dive angle looks too flat, tilt the whole bird shape further toward vertical and let the tail trail up and back, almost like a dropped arrow.
Cerulean blue and a warm rust-orange are the two colors that make a kingfisher instantly recognizable even at this simple a level.
Palette: Cerulean,Rust Orange,Pond Blue,Soft Cream
A spider web with dew drops between two grass stems is almost all line work, so patience with a fine brush matters more than color here. Paint the two grass stems first, simple and slightly leaning toward each other, then let the web fill the gap between them as a few radiating lines crossed by two or three gentle curved threads, not a full geometric grid.
Dew drops go on last and are the detail that carries the piece: paint each one as a tiny cream dot sitting right where two threads cross, since that is exactly where real dew gathers, and add one tiny darker edge beneath each drop for weight.
If the web looks too even and mechanical, skip a thread here and there and let two lines meet slightly off-center, since a real web is never perfectly symmetrical.
No fine liner brush on hand, the very tip of a round brush loaded thin works for these threads too.

A peacock feather lying on green moss is a strong color subject after all that quiet grass and web work. Paint the feather’s central shaft first as one long curving line, then build the soft barbs along each side in short overlapping strokes of teal and deep green, leaving the famous eye shape near the tip as its own layered circle of blue, green and a touch of rust at the very center.
Build that eye shape in careful order: the darkest ring first, then a lighter blue-green ring inside it once dry, then the small warm center dot last, so the rings stay crisp rather than muddying together.
If the feather’s barbs look too stiff and comb-like, vary the length and spacing of the strokes along the shaft, letting a few drift slightly out of line the way real feather fibers do.
Rest the feather diagonally across a loose patch of moss dots in moss green so it reads as lying down rather than floating.
Palette: Teal,Deep Green,Rust Orange,Moss Green
A hummingbird sipping from a red trumpet flower pairs a tiny fast bird with one bold flower shape. Paint the trumpet flower first, a long tapering cone shape in a strong red, since getting its funnel shape right before the bird goes in makes the whole composition sit correctly.
Build the hummingbird hovering just at the flower’s mouth, body small and compact, wings painted as a soft blurred shape rather than sharp feathers, since a hovering hummingbird’s wings genuinely blur even to the naked eye and a loose wash communicates that instantly.
If the beak looks too short to reach the flower, lengthen it slightly past what feels natural and angle it directly into the trumpet’s opening, since even a small gap between beak and flower breaks the sipping read.
A dry brush dragged lightly over the wing area, once the base wash is dry, adds just enough streaking to suggest motion without extra detail.
Palette: Red,Teal,Fern Green,Soft Cream
A pine branch with a single cone and a chickadee brings in a plainer winter mood after the bright hummingbird. Paint the pine branch first as a series of short needle clusters radiating from a central line, kept loose and a little irregular rather than combed flat, then add the cone hanging below it as a layered oval built from small overlapping scale shapes.
Place the chickadee perched on the branch itself, body round and compact with a simple black cap and bib, white cheek patch, and grey-brown wings, each shape flat and separate with no blending between them.
If the needles look too thin and sparse, cluster them in denser groups along the branch rather than spacing them evenly, which is closer to how pine needles actually grow in bunches.
Swap the chickadee for any small round bird shape you prefer if the cap and bib markings feel fiddly at first try.
