29 Owl Doodle Ideas of Reading Glasses, Noon Naps and Night Owl Coffee

6

An owl doodle is the perfect small project when you want a finished page without clearing the whole evening for it. Round bodies, big eyes and a few feather marks go a long way, and owls forgive a wobbly line better than almost any other bird because fluff hides a lot.

Below you will find 29 little scenes, from a sleepy owl at noon to a night owl wide awake over coffee. Grab a black fineliner and let teal and caramel brown marker do the rest, and work through the list in order if you want the easy ones first.

Owl doodle pages often start with the easiest face you can draw, and a round pair of reading glasses makes that face instantly funny. Draw one soft oval for the body, then two overlapping circles for the glasses sitting low on the face, with the eyes squinting just above the rims.

Ink the body outline first, then the glasses, then add a tiny folded map held in one wing. Keep the map just a few fold lines and a wobbly dotted trail, nothing detailed.

If the glasses end up crooked, lean into it and tilt the head the same way so it reads as a choice. Color the map caramel brown and leave the owl’s body plain with teal feather tips.

Use a slightly thicker pen line for the glasses frame so it pops against the thinner body outline.

Follow the glasses owl with a sleepy owl at noon, propping its own eyes open with its wings. Start with the same rounded body shape, then draw two wing shapes reaching up to the face instead of resting at the sides.

Ink the body and perch branch first, then add the wings pressed under each eye, pulling the lids up into tired little arcs. A small sun shape in the corner tells the whole joke without any extra words.

The eyes are where this goes wrong if you make them too round and alert looking, so keep the lids heavy and half closed even where the wing is not touching. Mark the sun in caramel brown and leave the owl mostly outline with a few teal streaks.

If wings feel tricky to bend convincingly, trace the shape from a photo of a bird wing folded at the elbow before you commit to ink.

Palette: Caramel Brown,Teal,Soft Yellow

Try this one again later in the day with the sun lower and the eyes fully open, and compare the two to see how much expression lives in just the eyelids.

Move to an owlet next, the smaller and rounder cousin of the full grown owls on this page. Draw a single fat teardrop body with tiny stub wings and no visible neck, then wrap a scarf around the base of the head in two or three loose loops.

Ink the body outline first, then the scarf on top, leaving a gap where the loops cross so the lines do not tangle into each other. Stripe the scarf in alternating teal and caramel brown bands once the ink is dry.

Owlets go wrong when the body gets too long and the fluff disappears, so keep this one wider than it is tall. Big simple feet peeking out at the bottom finish the shape.

Draw the scarf stripes following the curve of the loops rather than straight across, it reads as fabric instead of a flat pattern.

Palette: Teal,Caramel Brown,Black

From one small owlet, build up to a pair for this next page: two owls perched on the same branch, leaning into each other until their heads touch. Draw the branch first as a single curved line, then place the two bodies as overlapping ovals, one slightly taller than the other.

Measure the gap between the two heads before you ink it, it should be small enough that the top of each head almost meets, otherwise the lean reads as two separate owls rather than one pair. Ink the back owl’s outline first so the front owl can overlap its edge, then add feet gripping the branch last.

If the tilt looks stiff, soften the inner edge of each head where they touch with a short curved line instead of a hard point. Color one owl mostly teal and the other mostly caramel brown so they stay easy to tell apart.

Draw the branch curving slightly downward under their weight, it sells the perch far more than a flat straight line does.

Palette: Teal,Caramel Brown,Warm Grey

Give the page some motion next with an owl turning its head all the way around, caught mid startle. Draw the body facing forward as usual, feet planted on a branch, then draw the head as a circle turned almost backward with both eyes wide and round.

Ink the body first while it still faces front, then add the head on top at the twisted angle, overlapping the shoulders slightly so it reads as mid turn rather than just backward. A few short motion lines curving around the neck finish the effect.

This goes wrong if the head sits too high above the body with no overlap, which makes it look detached rather than turning. Keep the beak small and the eyes very round and wide to sell the surprise, with a touch of teal around the iris.

Draw the motion lines light and quick with the pen barely touching the page, heavy lines here look like scribbles instead of movement.

Palette: Teal,Black,Caramel Brown

Keep the energy going with an owlet mid tumble, caught just after its first flight attempt goes sideways. Draw the branch above the scene first, then the owlet below it tipped upside down, wings splayed out at odd angles and feet kicked up.

Ink the branch and a single loose feather drifting beside the owlet before the body, this sets the composition so the falling shape has room. Work the owlet’s body last, keeping the eyes wide rather than scared, more surprised than upset.

Tumbling poses go wrong when the body stays rigid and upright, so twist the torso and tilt the head opposite to the wings for a proper off balance look. Color the drifting feather teal and leave the owlet mostly plain ink.

If a falling pose feels hard to invent, flip your reference photo of a perched bird upside down and trace the general shape before adjusting the wings.

Palette: Teal,Caramel Brown,Black

Give this next owl a prop with some personality: a pinecone held up to the beak like a microphone. Draw the owl standing upright on a branch first, chest puffed slightly forward, then add one wing raised holding the pinecone close to the open beak.

Ink the body and branch, then the pinecone last so its scale sits correctly against the wing holding it, it should look just a bit too big to hold comfortably. Open the beak wide and draw a few short curved lines near it to suggest a loud hoot.

The pinecone goes wrong if you draw it too smooth, a pinecone needs short overlapping scale marks built in rows rather than one outline. Color it caramel brown with a few teal highlight lines.

Draw the hoot lines unevenly spaced rather than perfectly parallel, it reads as sound far better than a neat row of lines.

Palette: Caramel Brown,Teal,Black

After all that noise, slow the page down with a wide eyed owl fixed on a single fluttering moth. Draw the owl’s body facing slightly sideways, head turned toward the moth, then place the moth a short distance away with wings mid flutter.

Ink the owl first, keeping both eyes huge and perfectly round with the pupils locked toward the moth’s position, this is what sells the whole scene. Add the moth last with two simple wing shapes and short antenna lines, dotted with small teal spots.

If the stare looks blank rather than fixed, narrow the space between the pupil and the top eyelid slightly on the side closer to the moth. Give the moth a light caramel brown wash and leave the owl’s eyes bright white around the pupil.

Keep the moth smaller than you think it should be, an oversized moth competes with the owl instead of being the thing it is staring at.

Palette: Teal,Caramel Brown,Black

Switch the mood with an owl that is thoroughly, cheerfully awake: a night owl sipping coffee at midnight. Draw the body upright and alert, eyes extra wide, then add a small mug held in one wing with steam curling up from it.

Ink the owl and mug outline first, then a crescent moon and a star or two in the background to anchor the midnight setting. Keep the posture a little jittery, shoulders slightly raised, to suggest too much caffeine rather than calm.

The mug goes wrong if it sits flat against the wing with no sense of grip, so draw the wing tip curling slightly over the rim. Color the mug caramel brown and the moon a soft teal outline only, left unfilled.

Draw the steam as two or three short wavy lines rather than one long curl, it keeps the mug looking warm without crowding the small space above it.

Palette: Caramel Brown,Teal,Black

Flip the last idea around with an owlet who absolutely will not go to sleep now that the sun is up. Draw the owlet’s round body first with wings crossed stubbornly over its chest, then a small rising sun behind it with a few ray lines.

Ink the owlet’s defiant pose first, feet planted wide apart, then the sun last so its rays stay behind the body rather than crossing in front of it. A single furrowed brow line above each eye does most of the emotional work here.

This goes wrong if the owlet looks sleepy instead of stubborn, so keep the eyes wide open rather than drooping, with the wings held tight and high. Color the sun caramel brown with teal ray tips for contrast.

If drawing crossed wings feels awkward, simplify it to two straight diagonal shapes meeting at the chest rather than trying to fold feather detail into the cross.

Palette: Caramel Brown,Teal,Black

Give an owl its moment of dignity with a tiny graduation cap set at a careful angle on its head. Draw the round body and face first, then place the flat cap shape on top, tilted slightly so it reads as worn rather than glued flat.

Ink the owl’s body and round glasses or wide knowing eyes first, then the cap last, adding a short tassel hanging off one corner. Keep the expression calm and slightly smug rather than surprised, a slow blink rather than a wide stare.

The cap goes wrong if it sits perfectly flat and symmetrical, which looks pasted on, so tilt it a few degrees and let one corner sit slightly lower. Color the cap caramel brown with a teal tassel for contrast.

Draw the tassel as a few loose thread lines ending in a small tuft rather than one solid shape, it moves better on the page.

For more bookish bird company, the book doodles list pairs nicely with a wise owl scene like this one.

Palette: Caramel Brown,Teal,Black

Keep the expressions coming with an owl caught mid wink, one eye wide and round, the other squeezed into a simple curved line. Draw the face symmetrical first in light pencil if needed, then commit to ink with one eye fully open and the other closed.

Ink the open eye first since it sets the scale for the whole face, then the winking eye as a short upward curve with two or three lash marks beside it. A slightly raised eyebrow line above the winking side finishes the joke.

Winks go wrong when both sides of the face stay too even, so let the beak or head tilt very slightly toward the open eye to break the symmetry on purpose. Color the open eye’s iris teal and leave the rest plain ink and caramel brown feather marks.

Keep the lash marks short and few, three is plenty, more than that starts to look like a spider rather than a wink.

Palette: Teal,Caramel Brown,Black

Build a round one next, a chubby owlet drawn almost entirely as one fluffy ball with two tiny feet underneath. Start with a single large circle for the body, barely interrupted by wings, and keep the head blending straight into the body with no visible neck at all.

Ink the one big outline first, then add two small feet right at the bottom center and a tiny beak and eyes near the top third of the circle. Texture the edge with short choppy strokes all the way around to read as down feathers rather than a smooth balloon.

This goes wrong if the feet get too large, which breaks the illusion of a weightless fluff ball, so keep them small and slightly splayed. Color most of the body caramel brown with a few teal fluff tufts near the ears.

If the texture strokes feel repetitive, vary their length every few strokes so the outline edge does not look like a printed pattern.

Palette: Caramel Brown,Teal,Black

Move the scene outdoors with an owl perched on a branch, reaching up to hang a tiny lantern from a hook above its head. Draw the branch and owl’s body first, then the raised wing reaching upward, and finally the lantern itself hanging from a short loop of string.

Ink the lantern last once the reaching wing is settled, keeping it small, a simple box or rounded shape with a flat top and bottom and a little flame or dot inside. The light source here sits inside the lantern, so add a soft ring of short radiating lines around it rather than shading the owl itself.

This goes wrong if the lantern ends up bigger than the owl’s head, so check it against the head size before inking the final outline. Color the lantern glow caramel brown and the lantern frame teal.

Draw the hanging string with a very slight curve rather than a straight line, it reads as something actually hanging rather than glued in place.

Palette: Caramel Brown,Teal,Black

Send the next owl searching, crouched low and checking under a cluster of leaves with a tiny flashlight held in one wing. Draw the body in a low crouching pose first, head tilted down and forward, then add the leaves as a simple cluster of three or four rounded shapes.

Ink the owl and leaves first, then the flashlight beam last as a soft triangle shape with a few short light rays inside it, aimed down at the leaf cluster. Keep the beam see through by leaving it mostly unfilled with just a thin teal outline.

The crouch goes wrong if the legs disappear entirely, so leave at least a short visible leg shape bent at the knee even under a round body. Color the flashlight body caramel brown and the beam a pale teal wash.

If the beam shape feels tricky, trace a flattened triangle from a ruler first and round off the corners afterward by hand.

Palette: Teal,Caramel Brown,Black

Bring back some comedy with an owl whose feathers stick up in every direction, clearly fresh out of sleep. Draw the round body and face calmly first, keeping the expression droopy eyed and unimpressed, then add the feather spikes last all over the top of the head.

Ink the spikes in short individual strokes pointing in different directions rather than one uniform crest, some leaning left, some right, one or two standing straight up. This is the one spot on the owl where messy actually helps the drawing instead of hurting it.

Bedhead reads flat if every spike is the same length, so vary them deliberately, a few short, one or two long and dramatic. Color most spikes caramel brown with one or two teal ones scattered through for contrast.

Draw the spikes with quick confident strokes rather than slow careful ones, hesitant lines here look tidy instead of chaotic.

Palette: Caramel Brown,Teal,Black

Settle the mood down again with an owl dressed for bed properly, wearing a soft pointed nightcap and holding a small candle in one wing. Draw the body and nightcap first as one continuous shape flowing from the head into a drooping point with a small pom at the tip.

Ink the candle last, a short straight stick shape with a simple teardrop flame on top, held upright in the raised wing. The light source sits at the flame, so add a soft ring of short lines around just the flame rather than lighting the whole owl.

The nightcap point goes wrong if it stands straight up, which looks alert rather than sleepy, so let it droop and flop slightly to one side. Color the nightcap caramel brown with a teal pom at the tip.

Keep the flame small, a flame drawn too large competes with the owl’s face for attention in such a small scene.

Palette: Caramel Brown,Teal,Black

Add a smaller desk scene with an owl hunched over homework, pencil gripped awkwardly in one wing and eyes crossed from concentration. Draw the hunched posture first, shoulders rounded forward and head tilted down close to a small sheet of paper.

Ink the paper and a few scribbled lines on it before the owl’s face, then draw the crossed eyes last, pupils angled sharply inward toward the beak. The pencil sits pinched between two wing tips rather than gripped like a human hand, keep that part simple.

Crossed eyes go wrong if both pupils point the same direction, which just looks like a sideways glance, so angle them toward each other, almost meeting above the beak. Color the pencil caramel brown with a teal eraser tip.

If the hunched pose feels stiff, round the owl’s back into a clear curve rather than drawing the spine as a straight line.

Palette: Caramel Brown,Teal,Black

This next owl shows how much a single shape change can carry, puffed up twice its normal size against the cold. Draw the usual round body first in light pencil as a size guide, then ink a much larger, rounder outline around it so the whole shape nearly doubles.

Keep the face small and slightly squeezed in the middle of this much bigger round body, with the wings barely visible, tucked almost entirely into the fluff. A few small snowflake marks scattered around the owl set the cold without needing any background at all.

This goes wrong if the face stays the same size as a normal owl relative to the body, which reads as a costume rather than fluffed feathers, so shrink the face slightly within the larger shape. Color the body mostly caramel brown fluff texture with teal snowflakes around it.

Draw the snowflakes as simple six line stars, kept small and few, three or four is enough to read as falling snow.

Palette: Caramel Brown,Teal,Black

Bring in some autumn movement with an owl reaching up mid flight to catch a single falling leaf in its talons. Draw the body first in a slight diagonal lean, wings spread as if just landing or lifting off, then place the leaf just above the outstretched talons.

Ink the owl’s body and spread wings first, then the leaf last, drawn as one simple pointed oval with two or three vein lines, slightly tilted as if still drifting rather than already caught. The eye level sits slightly below the owl here, looking up at the catch, which makes the pose feel more active.

This goes wrong if the talons close around the leaf with no gap at all, which looks static, so leave a small sliver of space between the claw tips and the leaf edge to suggest the instant just before contact. Color the leaf caramel brown with a teal vein line down the center.

Angle the wings unevenly, one higher than the other, it reads as mid motion far better than a symmetrical spread.

Palette: Caramel Brown,Teal,Black

Give the page a small joke with an owl knocking on the little round door of its own tree hollow. Draw the tree trunk section first as a simple curved rectangle, then cut a round doorway into it with a tiny frame and a small handle.

Ink the door and frame before the owl, then add the owl standing just outside it, one wing raised mid knock against the wood. Keep the knocking wing slightly blurred with two or three short lines trailing behind it to suggest the motion of the knock itself.

This goes wrong if the door looks flat and separate from the trunk, so curve the door frame to match the curve of the trunk around it rather than drawing it as a perfect circle. Color the door caramel brown with a teal handle.

Draw the bark texture around the door as short vertical dashes rather than one solid outline, it keeps the trunk from looking like a flat board.

Palette: Caramel Brown,Teal,Black

Pair the owl with an unlikely companion for this one, a mouse sitting beside it on a branch, both looking equally nervous. Draw the owl’s body first, slightly stiff and upright, then the mouse much smaller beside it, tail curled tightly around its own feet.

Ink both characters with the same wide eyed, straight mouthed expression, small vertical lines above each head doing double duty as raised ear tufts on the owl and alert whiskers on the mouse. Keep a small gap of open space between them rather than touching, it reads as mutual wariness.

This goes wrong if the size difference disappears, which makes them look like the same animal in two outfits, so keep the mouse noticeably smaller and lower to the branch. Color the owl in the usual caramel brown and teal, and leave the mouse mostly plain ink with a touch of teal on the tail tip.

If two nervous expressions feel repetitive to draw, change just the eyebrow angle slightly between them so each face reads a little differently despite matching wide eyes.

Palette: Caramel Brown,Teal,Black

Catch a sharper reaction with an owl hearing a sudden noise, ear tufts snapping straight upright. Draw the body calm and still first, then add the ear tufts last as two tall pointed shapes standing fully vertical rather than their usual relaxed angle.

Ink the wide alert eyes and tilted head before the tufts, with the head turned slightly toward where the sound is coming from, off to one side of the page. A few short curved lines near the ear tufts suggest the sudden snap into alertness.

This goes wrong if the tufts stay the same size and shape as a resting owl’s, so exaggerate their height and straighten them completely for this pose specifically. Color the tufts caramel brown tipped in teal.

Draw the body slightly lower and more compact than usual, a crouched ready stance sells the alertness alongside the raised ears.

Palette: Caramel Brown,Teal,Black

Lighten the mood with an owl swinging on a little branch swing, strung between two higher branches by a looped vine or string. Draw the two support strings first, angled slightly forward to suggest mid swing, then the short branch seat hanging between them.

Ink the owl last, seated with wings gripping each string and feet dangling freely below the seat rather than planted. Lean the whole owl’s body slightly backward against the direction of the swing to suggest momentum.

This goes wrong if the owl sits perfectly upright on the swing, which looks static, so tilt the torso and let one wing grip higher than the other. Color the branch seat caramel brown and the support strings a thin teal line.

Draw a couple of small leaves drifting near the swing’s path, it adds motion without adding any real complexity to the scene.

For more branch and perch poses to borrow from, the owl painting ideas list is worth a look too.

Palette: Caramel Brown,Teal,Black

Send this one stargazing, an owl perched beside a small telescope, one eye pressed to the lens. Draw the telescope first as a simple tube on a tripod, angled upward at roughly the same height as the owl’s head, then build the owl’s body leaning in beside it.

Ink the telescope and a few small stars scattered above it before the owl, then add the owl last with its body turned sideways, one eye squeezed shut and the other pressed close to the eyepiece. The light here is minimal and comes from the stars themselves, so keep the owl mostly dark outline with just a touch of teal catching the top of its head.

This goes wrong if the eye pressed to the lens is drawn fully round and open, which breaks the illusion of actually looking through something narrow, so narrow that eye noticeably compared to the closed one. Color the telescope caramel brown and the stars a pale teal.

Keep the tripod legs slightly uneven in length, a perfectly symmetrical tripod looks stiff next to a round, soft owl shape.

Palette: Caramel Brown,Teal,Black

Take the owlet back to school with a tiny lunchbox held in one wing on what is clearly its first day. Draw the round owlet body first, posture a little stiff and nervous, then the lunchbox as a simple rectangle with a rounded top and a small handle.

Ink the lunchbox before the face, then add the owlet’s expression last, wide eyes and a small straight mouth that reads as brave rather than upset. A single strap crossing the body like a tiny backpack strap adds the finishing school touch.

This goes wrong if the lunchbox is drawn too large, which overwhelms the small owlet, so keep it no taller than the owlet’s head. Color the lunchbox caramel brown with a teal handle and strap.

Draw the feet set slightly apart and planted, a nervous first day stance benefits from a grounded pose rather than one foot lifted.

Palette: Caramel Brown,Teal,Black

Bring the school theme full circle with an owl teacher holding a small pointer stick in front of a tiny chalkboard, teaching a class made up of exactly one owlet. Draw the teacher owl and chalkboard first, pointer raised toward a simple diagram or a few scribbled lines on the board.

Ink the owlet seated in front last, small and attentive, one wing raised as if answering a question. Keep the scale difference clear, the teacher taller and straighter, the owlet rounder and smaller, seated lower in the frame.

This goes wrong if both owls end up the same height, which flattens the teacher and student dynamic, so stretch the teacher’s posture slightly taller and keep the owlet compact. Color the chalkboard caramel brown with teal chalk marks on it.

Draw the pointer stick as one thin straight line, resist adding any decoration to it, a plain stick reads clearer than a fussy one in such a small scene.

Palette: Caramel Brown,Teal,Black

Give the owl a cozy predicament for this one, squeezed into a birdhouse clearly built a size too small. Draw the birdhouse first as a simple box shape with a peaked roof and a round entry hole, then build the owl’s body filling almost the entire opening, feathers compressed at the edges.

Ink the birdhouse outline first, then the owl squeezed inside it, with a wing or two poking slightly out of the hole since there is no room to tuck them in. Keep the expression content rather than distressed, eyes half closed in a cozy, satisfied way.

This goes wrong if you leave visible gaps between the owl and the hole’s edge, which breaks the squished feeling entirely, so let the body edge touch or slightly overlap the hole’s rim all the way around. Color the birdhouse caramel brown with a teal roof.

Draw a tiny heart or flower near the entry hole if you want a touch more charm, it stays optional and very small.

Palette: Caramel Brown,Teal,Black

Close the set with an owl thoroughly rained on, feathers flattened and expression visibly unimpressed. Draw the body first with the feathers drawn flat and close against the shape rather than fluffed, a noticeably sleeker silhouette than every other owl on this page.

Ink a few straight diagonal rain lines falling around the owl before finishing the face, then add a deeply unimpressed expression last, narrowed eyes and a downturned beak. A single drip hanging off one ear tuft or the beak tip sums up the whole mood.

This goes wrong if the feathers stay puffy like the other owls, since flat wet feathers are the entire point of this drawing, so draw the body outline noticeably narrower and smoother than a dry owl. Color the rain lines teal and the single drip caramel brown for a small warm accent against the cool rain.

Keep the puddle underneath simple, one flat oval shape with two or three ripple lines is plenty.

Once you have run through the whole set, the butterfly doodle and travel doodle lists make good next notebook pages with the same fineliner and marker combo.

What to Do Next

Pick one owl from this list, ideally one near the top if this is a new sheet of paper for you, and work through it start to finish before moving to the next. A plain sketchbook page or a sheet of dot grid paper suits all 29 equally well, so there is nothing stopping you from starting right now.

Frequently Asked Questions

What pens work best for an owl doodle?

A black fineliner in a fine tip, around 0.3 to 0.5, handles outlines and detail best. Add a second thicker fineliner for bold borders, and two alcohol markers in teal and caramel brown for small color accents.

How do you make owl doodles look less stiff?

Vary the pose and tilt the head or body off center rather than keeping everything symmetrical. A slight lean, an uneven wing height or a tipped ear tuft reads as alive instead of posed.

Do I need to draw feathers in detail?

No, a doodle owl reads fine with a smooth outline and just a few short feather marks around the edges or ear tufts. Heavy feather detail slows the drawing down without adding much at this small scale.

What is the easiest owl doodle to start with?

A round body with a simple face and no complex pose, like the owl in reading glasses or the winking owl, is the easiest starting point. Build confidence there before trying tumbling or mid flight poses.

How do you keep owl eyes from looking blank?

Keep the pupils slightly off center toward whatever the owl is reacting to, a moth, a sound, a mug of coffee. A fully centered round pupil with no eyelid shape tends to look flat and glassy.
