36 Pizza Doodle Ideas of Cheese Stretches, Pizza Surfers and Sleepy Slices

4

A pizza doodle is the fastest way to turn five spare minutes into something that makes you grin. Give a cheese triangle a face, two stick arms and a problem to deal with, and suddenly it is sunbathing, surfing or running from a pizza cutter like its life depends on it.

Below are 36 small scenes built for a black fineliner with a red and green marker for the sauce and basil bits. Work through them in order if you like, from the simplest wobbly slice to the busier little stories, and keep each one small enough to finish before your tea goes cold.

Start with the easiest pizza doodle in the whole list: a single slice pulling its own cheese like taffy. Draw the triangle first, flat crust edge at the bottom, then two stubby arms gripping a long wavy strand of cheese stretched out to one side.

Outline everything in fineliner before you add color, so mistakes stay easy to erase. Color the crust and sauce with your red marker in light strokes, then fill the cheese strand and the slice top with the green accents kept to a few basil dots, not the whole surface.

The stretch usually goes wrong when it looks stiff and straight. Keep the strand gently curved, thinner in the middle than at both ends, and add two or three thin drips hanging off it so it reads as soft and gooey rather than a rope.

If you only have one marker color, do the whole stretch in red and leave the cheese white with just an outline, it still reads fine.

Give the same slice shape a surfboard and a small wave, and you have a little beach scene instead of a snack. Draw the slice standing upright with its crust edge as the back foot, arms out for balance, then a long thin oval board underneath it and one curling wave line behind.

Work the wave in pencil first if you are unsure of the curl, then ink over the confident lines and erase the rest. Fill the sauce and crust in red, leave the board plain or give it one green stripe, and keep the wave as an outline with a few white gaps left unmarked for foam.

Balance is the part that tips over easily. Keep the slice leaning slightly back over the board rather than straight up, that lean alone makes it look like it is actually riding something.

No wave idea comes to mind without reference, so look at a single ocean wave curl, like the ones in this summer food and drinks set, for the shape before you ink it.

Move from the beach to the kitchen table with a slice having a nap. Draw the pizza lying flat on its back on a round plate, eyes closed with two curved lash lines, and a small rectangle napkin draped over its middle like a blanket.

Ink the plate as a simple oval first so the slice has something to lie on, then the slice itself, then the napkin folds last so they sit over the top edges cleanly. Keep the sauce red light and even, since a sleeping slice does not need bold color, just a calm even fill.

Eyes placed too high make it look awake and startled rather than asleep. Keep them low on the slice, close together, with a small closed smile underneath and maybe a zzz mark floating above.

Ten minutes gets you the basic nap. For the forty minute version, add a texture pattern to the napkin like thin stripes or small dots, and a crumb or two scattered near the plate.

Palette: Tomato Red,Napkin Blue,Crust Tan

Bring in a second slice for this one, since a high five needs two hands meeting. Draw both slices facing each other at an angle, crusts out and points meeting in the middle, each with one arm raised and palms touching at the top.

Ink the slice closer to you first with slightly bolder lines, then the second slice behind it a touch lighter, so there is a sense of depth even in a flat doodle. Add small flying cheese bits and a few motion lines around the meeting hands to show the impact.

Hands drawn too detailed look fussy at this scale. Keep each hand to a simple mitten shape with one thumb line, that reads as a hand without needing finger detail.

Next time you draw this pair, try fist bumps instead of high fives, same pose, different hand shape, and it becomes a whole new little scene.

Lay a slice flat on its back again, but this time under a hot sun with sunglasses and a melting problem. Draw the slice reclining with one arm behind its head, tiny round sunglasses on, and a few drips of cheese starting to slide off its edge toward the ground.

Place the eye level low, as if you are looking at the slice from ground height rather than from above, which makes the sun behind it feel higher and brighter. A small sun shape with short ray lines in the top corner sells the heat without much extra work.

Ink the slice and sunglasses first, then the melting cheese drips last so they can overlap the crust edge convincingly. Color the drips in a lighter yellow if you have it, or leave them white with just an outline if your kit is red and green only.

If your marker set has no yellow, a very light uncolored outline for the cheese drips reads as melting just as well against the red sauce.

Give a slice a face covered in small pepperoni circles like freckles, with a blush to match. Draw the slice upright with a round simple face, then scatter five or six small circles across its cheeks instead of the usual two or three pepperonis, like freckles rather than toppings.

Ink the face first, eyes and a small shy smile, then add the pepperoni freckles in a loose scatter, never in a neat row, which is what makes them read as freckles rather than decoration. Color each one red, then add two soft pink blush circles on the cheeks with your marker held lightly for a faded edge.

Freckles placed too evenly look like a pattern, not skin. Keep the spacing uneven and let a couple sit close together near the nose area.

If pink is not in your kit, blend red marker very lightly with a near empty stroke for the blush, or leave it as two small outlined circles.

Palette: Tomato Red,Blush Pink,Crust Tan

Set up the oldest pizza argument there is: a slice and a pineapple chunk staring each other down. Draw the slice on one side with narrowed angry eyes and crossed arms, and a small pineapple character on the other side with its own narrowed eyes and a spiky green top.

Work the slice first since it is the simpler shape, then the pineapple, which needs a crosshatch texture across its body to read as pineapple skin. Keep that crosshatch light and loose, just a few crossing lines, not a full grid.

Eyebrows do most of the emotional work here. Angle them sharply down toward the center of the face on both characters, pointing them toward each other, and the glare reads instantly even with simple dot eyes.

A small jagged lightning bolt or a few short tension lines drawn between the two characters finishes the standoff without needing any extra words.

Palette: Tomato Red,Basil Green,Pineapple Gold

Put a slice mid action with a flying karate kick. Draw the crust end as the planted leg bent low, and the pointed tip of the slice swung up high as the kicking leg, with both arms pulled back in a classic ready stance.

Eye level sits low again here, looking slightly up at the slice, which makes the kick feel more dramatic than a straight-on view would. Add a couple of short speed lines trailing behind the kicking leg to carry the motion.

A kick drawn with both legs the same length looks static rather than mid-air. Make the kicking leg noticeably longer and angled higher than the standing leg, and tilt the whole slice slightly off its usual upright pose.

Give it a small headband or belt line in green marker across the middle for a tiny costume touch without adding extra drawing work.

Palette: Tomato Red,Basil Green,Crust Tan

Turn a cheese pull into a bungee cord for this one. Draw the slice upside down near the top of the page, arms out wide in a scream pose, with a long wavy strand of cheese stretching up from its crust end to an unseen point above the frame.

Ink the slice first in its upside down pose, which is the trickiest part since the crust and point swap places from the usual stance, then add the cheese cord last, curving slightly rather than drawing it dead straight so it reads as elastic.

A straight stiff cord kills the bounce feeling instantly. Add one small loop or kink partway down the cheese strand, and a few drip marks flicking off it, to sell the stretch and snap of the jump.

If upside down faces feel tricky to draw, flip your whole page upside down while you ink the face, then turn it back, the proportions come out straighter that way.

Palette: Tomato Red,Basil Green,Crust Tan

Give a slice a reason to hide its face: a crust gone dark at the edge. Draw the slice in its usual triangle shape, but this time add a jagged dark band along the crust edge using tight scribble marks rather than a flat fill, and have the slice covering its face with both hands.

Ink the sauce and body first, then build the burnt section last with short overlapping scribbles in black, layering a few strokes rather than one solid block, which reads as char far better than a flat color fill ever does.

A burnt patch that is too neat looks painted on rather than actually burnt. Keep the scribble edge ragged and uneven, denser in some spots than others.

Peeking fingers with one eye showing through them adds a shy, embarrassed note that a fully covered face does not give you.

Palette: Tomato Red,Crust Tan,Char Black

Use the side of your fineliner tip, if it has one, or a soft pencil scribbled over lightly, to get a rougher charred texture than a pure fine line gives.

Step back from single slices to draw a whole pizza, minus one wedge, crying about the gap. Draw a full circle first, divide it lightly into six or eight slices with faint pencil lines, then ink over all but one wedge, leaving that triangle empty with just its two straight edges shown.

Give the pizza a sad face centered in the remaining body, with big wobbly tears falling near the missing wedge, and the toppings like pepperoni circles scattered evenly across the slices that remain.

A missing wedge drawn too small barely reads as missing. Make the gap a full even slice, roughly an eighth to a sixth of the circle, so the loss is obvious at a glance.

Draw this one for a fuller pizza scene next, with the missing slice sitting nearby on its own little plate looking equally upset.

Palette: Tomato Red,Crust Tan,Tear Blue

Put a slice behind the wheel, running its own delivery. Draw a simple round scooter shape first, two circles for wheels joined by a curved body line, then the slice sitting on top gripping tiny handlebars, with a small delivery box strapped to the back.

Ink the scooter frame before the slice, since the slice needs to sit correctly over the seat shape rather than floating above it. Keep the delivery box a plain rectangle with one strap line, and a couple of speed lines trailing behind the back wheel for motion.

Wheels drawn as perfect circles look like they are sitting still. Flatten the bottom of each wheel very slightly and tilt the whole scooter a touch forward to suggest it is actually moving.

If circles are hard to keep even, trace around a coin or a bottle cap for both wheels, it keeps them matching without extra effort.

You Will Need

• a small coin or bottle cap to trace the wheels, optional

Palette: Tomato Red,Basil Green,Box Brown

Give the cold fridge version of a slice its own moment. Draw the slice standing with its arms wrapped tightly around itself, shoulders raised up near its ears, and a small blanket draped over its back held closed with one hand.

Ink the basic slice shape first in its hunched pose, narrower and more pulled in than your usual upright slice, then the blanket on top with a few fold lines where it bunches at the shoulder. Add two or three short wavy lines near the body to suggest a shiver.

A slice that stands tall and relaxed will not read as cold no matter how many shiver lines surround it. Pull the shoulders up and the knees slightly bent inward, that hunch is what sells the cold far more than any extra mark.

Keep the sauce color a touch paler or duller than your usual red for this one, which reads as the sauce having gone cold too.

Palette: Pale Tomato,Blanket Blue,Crust Tan

Give a slice a single basil leaf tilted like a tiny hat. Draw the slice with a simple proud face, then one rounded leaf shape sitting at an angle on top of its head, with a short stem curling down toward one side like a beret’s little tail.

Ink the leaf outline with a slightly wobbly vein line down the middle before filling it in green, and keep the leaf noticeably larger than a real basil leaf would be at this scale so it actually reads as a hat and not a stray topping.

A leaf drawn flat on top, straight and centered, looks pinned on rather than worn. Angle it to one side, tilted the way a real beret sits, and the slice instantly looks a little chic about it.

Add a small curled mustache line under the face for extra flair, that one addition turns a hat joke into a whole character.

Palette: Tomato Red,Basil Green,Crust Tan

Hand a slice a tiny guitar and let it perform. Draw the slice standing on its crust edge, one arm bent up to strum and the other steadying the guitar’s neck, with a simple figure eight guitar body resting against its front.

Ink the guitar body first as two overlapping circles, then the slice behind it so the guitar sits convincingly in front of the pizza’s body rather than floating beside it. A few short curved lines near the strumming hand suggest motion and sound.

A guitar drawn too large overwhelms the little slice holding it. Keep the guitar body roughly the same height as the slice itself, which keeps the proportions readable and a bit comical.

Give the guitar a second color accent, a green strap line across the body, so it does not disappear visually into the red sauce tones around it.

Palette: Tomato Red,Basil Green,Guitar Brown

Stretch cheese again, but this time between two legs doing the splits. Draw the slice low to the ground with both legs extended flat to each side, and a long stretched string of cheese running between the two feet as if the slice is being pulled apart by its own cheese.

Ink the body and legs first in the full splits pose, keeping both legs the same length and angle so the pose reads as balanced rather than lopsided, then add the cheese strand last, sagging slightly in the middle under its own weight.

Legs drawn at different lengths make the splits look accidental rather than a trick. Measure roughly by eye against the slice’s own body width, and keep both legs matching that same length on either side.

A small determined or strained facial expression, one eyebrow raised, sells the effort of the stretch far better than a calm smiling face would here.

Palette: Tomato Red,Basil Green,Crust Tan

Turn two pepperoni circles into tiny dumbbells for a gym scene. Draw the slice in a wide strong stance, both arms bent and raised, each hand gripping a small pepperoni disc like a weight plate, with a determined straining face.

Ink the stance first, feet planted wide apart for stability, then the arms bent at the elbow holding the pepperonis up near shoulder height rather than overhead, which reads as a more believable lift at this scale.

Arms drawn too thin look like they could never lift anything. Thicken the upper arm section slightly compared to the lower arm, and add one small line for a flexed muscle bump, and the effort reads instantly.

Try this one with small cheese cubes instead of pepperonis next time, same pose, different prop, for an easy variation once the pose itself feels comfortable.

Palette: Tomato Red,Basil Green,Crust Tan

Sit a slice down at a tiny table with a drink for company. Draw a small round table first, then the slice seated behind it on one side, one arm resting on the table near a tall glass of lemonade with a straw and a thin lemon slice on the rim.

Ink the table and glass first since they anchor the whole scene, then the slice behind it, slightly smaller in the background than the glass in front, which gives the drawing a simple sense of depth even in a flat doodle style.

A glass drawn with straight vertical sides looks stiff. Taper it very slightly narrower at the base than the rim, and curve the two side lines just a touch inward, for a far more natural glass shape.

Give the slice a shy smile and slightly pink cheeks, a small nervous detail that turns a simple sitting pose into a date.

Palette: Tomato Red,Lemon Yellow,Crust Tan

Give a slice strong opinions about its own toppings. Draw the slice with a scrunched up disgusted face, tongue slightly out, one hand pinching a single olive between two fingers and holding it away from its own body at arm’s length.

Ink the face expression first since the whole joke depends on it reading clearly, exaggerated scrunched eyes and a curled lip, then the body and the pinching hand holding the offending olive out to one side.

A face drawn too mild just looks neutral rather than disgusted. Push the eyebrows down hard toward the nose and curl one corner of the mouth up sharply, exaggeration is what makes a cartoon expression work at small sizes.

Scatter two or three more olives still sitting on the slice’s surface, slightly smaller than the one being held, so the story of picking them off one by one is clear.

Palette: Tomato Red,Olive Green,Crust Tan

Add a rolling pizza cutter as the villain of this scene and a slice running for its life. Draw the slice mid-sprint, legs stretched wide apart and arms pumping, then the round pizza cutter behind it on its side, wheel spinning with a few short curved lines to show it rolling fast.

Ink the running slice first, leaning forward sharply from the crust end toward the pointed tip to really sell the forward motion, then the cutter behind it, kept lower to the ground since a rolling wheel naturally sits at ground level.

A cutter that looks too friendly undercuts the whole joke. Give its blade a sharp glint line and tilt it slightly toward the fleeing slice, pointed almost like it is chasing on purpose.

Small sweat drops flicking off the running slice’s head finish the panic without needing any extra pose work.

Palette: Tomato Red,Steel Grey,Crust Tan

Fold a paper plate into a tiny boat and let a slice sail it. Draw a simple curved plate shape with the rim turned up slightly at both ends like a canoe, a small triangle flag on a thin mast in the middle, and the slice standing inside holding the mast with one hand.

Ink the boat shape first as one continuous curved line, then a few short wave lines beneath it to show it floating, then the slice standing inside last so it sits correctly within the boat’s curve rather than on top of it.

A boat drawn flat with no curve reads as a plate, not a vessel. Curve both ends upward clearly and keep the waterline wave marks close beneath it, that curve alone makes the sailing idea read instantly.

If a mast and flag feel fiddly, skip them and just have the slice holding a tiny paddle instead, simpler to draw and just as clear.

Palette: Tomato Red,Ocean Blue,Crust Tan

Pair a slice with a chili pepper character and let the heat get to both of them. Draw the slice first with its mouth wide open and tongue out, fanning its own face with one hand, then a small curved chili pepper beside it, also looking equally overwhelmed.

Ink the slice’s open mouth and fanning hand before anything else, since that pose carries most of the joke, then the chili shape beside it with its own tiny worried face and a thin stem on top.

Sweat drops drawn too small barely register. Make three or four large teardrop shapes around both characters’ heads, bigger than you think they need to be, and the heat reads clearly even at a glance.

Color the chili a slightly darker red than the pizza sauce so the two don’t blend together, or use orange if that is in your kit.

Palette: Tomato Red,Chili Red,Crust Tan

Put a slice in charge of its own kitchen. Draw the slice standing with a tall simple chef hat on top, one arm raised holding a small pinch of cheese shreds above its own head, sprinkling them down onto itself with a proud expression.

Ink the chef hat first as a puffed rounded top over a narrower band, then the slice body beneath it, then the falling cheese shreds last as a scatter of small curved lines drifting down from the raised hand.

A hat drawn too narrow looks like a party hat rather than a chef hat. Round out the top section generously, wider than the band below it, for a shape that reads clearly as a chef’s toque.

Give the falling cheese shreds a light yellow or cream tint if you have it, which separates them visually from the red sauce beneath.

Palette: Tomato Red,Cheese Cream,Crust Tan

Play with scale by drawing one small pizza bite standing beside a slice many times its size. Draw the giant slice first, filling most of the upper part of the page, then the tiny bite character down at its base, roughly the size of just one of the giant slice’s eyes.

Give the giant slice a calm friendly expression looking down, and the tiny bite a wide-eyed amazed look tilted back to take in the size above it. Keep both characters’ proportions, eyes and smile style, consistent between them so they clearly belong to the same pizza family despite the size gap.

A size gap that is too subtle loses the whole joke. Make the giant slice at least four or five times the tiny bite’s height, exaggerated rather than realistic, since cartoon scale works best when it is obvious at a glance.

Add a thin dotted line trailing from the giant slice to suggest the bite just broke off from it, a small detail that ties the two characters together as one story.

Palette: Tomato Red,Basil Green,Crust Tan

Sink a slice into a round tub of tomato sauce instead of water. Draw a round tub shape first with a scalloped wavy rim to suggest bubbling sauce, the slice relaxed inside with only its head and arms showing over the rim, eyes closed and content.

Ink the tub rim first, then a few curved bubble lines rising from the sauce surface around the slice’s shoulders, then the relaxed face last with closed eyes and a small smile, since a calm face is what sells the whole hot tub idea.

Bubbles drawn as tiny perfect circles look more like soda than hot sauce. Vary their sizes and let a couple overlap or sit half hidden behind the rim, which reads as a bubbling simmer rather than fizz.

If red marker is your only sauce color, leave the bubbles as plain outlined circles rather than filling them, the contrast against the solid red tub reads clearly on its own.

Palette: Tomato Red,Steam White,Crust Tan

Give a slice the classic hesitant pool toe dip, but with a small cup of ranch instead of a pool. Draw the slice standing at the edge of a small round dip cup, one crust corner stretched down to dip in like a toe testing the water, arms out slightly for balance.

Ink the slice’s balancing pose first, weight clearly on one leg with the other leg extended down toward the cup, then the cup itself with a flat pale fill for the ranch and a thin rim line around the top.

A crust corner dipped straight down with no hesitation in the pose loses the joke. Tilt the slice’s whole upper body slightly back and raise the opposite arm higher, as if bracing for cold, and the hesitation reads clearly.

Keep the ranch cup pale and mostly uncolored rather than filled solid, a flat white or very light cream fill reads as a dip far better than a bold color would here.

Palette: Tomato Red,Ranch Cream,Crust Tan

Give a slice a soft side with a pepperoni held close like a stuffed toy. Draw the slice seated or lying slightly curled, both arms wrapped around a single large pepperoni disc held against its chest, eyes closed in a peaceful expression.

Ink the slice’s curled pose first, knees drawn up slightly if you are doing a seated version, then the pepperoni held between the arms last, drawn a bit larger than a normal topping circle so it reads clearly as a teddy stand-in rather than just a snack sitting there.

A pepperoni drawn flat and thin looks like it is just resting on the slice rather than being held. Give it a touch of roundness with one curved highlight line, and tuck the slice’s arms fully around its edges so the hug reads as deliberate.

Add a tiny bow or line detail on the pepperoni in green marker for a small teddy bear touch, like a ribbon around its middle.

Palette: Tomato Red,Pepperoni Red,Basil Green

Frame a slice peeking out from under a lifted takeout box lid. Draw the box first as a simple rectangle with the lid propped open at an angle on one side, then the slice’s face and one hand poking out from the gap, as if checking who is there.

Ink the box shape first with clean straight edges, then the lid angled open, then the slice peeking through last so its curved shape contrasts clearly against the box’s straight lines. Keep most of the slice’s body hidden inside the box, only the face and a hand showing.

A lid drawn flat and closed loses the whole peeking joke before it starts. Angle the lid clearly open, propped at roughly a diagonal, with a visible gap dark enough to read as the box’s shadowed interior behind the slice.

Fold lines along the box edges, two or three short diagonal marks at each corner, make a plain rectangle read convincingly as cardboard.

Palette: Tomato Red,Box Brown,Crust Tan

Send a slice headfirst into a round pool of melted cheese. Draw the slice in a diving pose, arms stretched forward and legs trailing straight back, angled diagonally toward a round pool shape drawn below it with a wavy rippled surface.

Ink the pool surface first as a simple oval with a scalloped wavy top edge, then the diving slice above it angled sharply downward, then a small splash shape right where the two meet, made of a few short pointed lines flicking upward.

A diving pose drawn too upright looks like falling rather than diving. Stretch the arms and body into one long diagonal line from fingertip to crust point, with the legs trailing slightly behind rather than straight down, for a proper dive angle.

Keep the cheese pool a pale warm yellow rather than the same red as the sauce, so the two textures stay visually distinct even in a simple two-marker palette.

Palette: Cheese Yellow,Tomato Red,Crust Tan

Give a slice its own victory moment with a medal around its neck. Draw the slice standing tall and proud, chest slightly puffed out, with a round medal on a ribbon hanging from its neck and both arms raised in a small cheer.

Ink the standing pose first, shoulders pulled back and chin up for that proud posture, then the medal ribbon looping down from the neck, then the round medal disc itself last with a star or simple line detail in the middle.

A medal drawn flat against the chest with no ribbon visible loses the win feeling. Let the ribbon show clearly looping over both shoulders before meeting at the medal, and the win reads immediately even before you add a smile.

Color the ribbon in green and the medal disc in a gold or yellow tone if you have one, which keeps the medal from blending into the red sauce tones around it.

Palette: Tomato Red,Medal Gold,Basil Green

Give a slice a single pepperoni worn sideways under its nose like a moustache. Draw the slice’s face first with a simple smile, then one pepperoni circle positioned just below the nose area, slightly elongated rather than perfectly round, to read clearly as a moustache rather than a stray topping.

Ink the face and the moustache pepperoni together in one pass, since getting the placement right matters more here than drawing order. Keep the pepperoni slightly wider than tall, with the two side edges curving up very slightly like a handlebar shape.

A moustache pepperoni placed too high crowds the eyes, and too low looks separate from the face entirely. Sit it directly under where the nose would be, close enough to the mouth that it clearly belongs to the face.

Add a small monocle or top hat in a future version of this same slice for a fuller gentleman look once this basic version feels easy.

Palette: Tomato Red,Pepperoni Red,Crust Tan

Shape a whole pizza as a heart instead of a circle for this one. Draw two overlapping rounded humps at the top meeting in a point at the bottom, the classic heart outline, then fill it with the usual sauce and a scatter of pepperoni circles across the surface.

Ink the heart outline first as one continuous confident line rather than piecing it together from separate curves, since a wobbly heart outline is more noticeable than a wobbly circle would be. Add a simple blushing face in the center, eyes closed or looking shyly to one side with pink cheek circles.

A heart shape drawn too narrow at the top looks more like a leaf than a heart. Keep the two top humps generously rounded and roughly equal in size, meeting at a clear dip in the middle before narrowing to the bottom point.

This shape works well for a Valentine’s themed page alongside other heart motifs if you want to build out a small series.

Palette: Tomato Red,Blush Pink,Crust Tan

Bounce a slice high in the air on a thin pogo stick. Draw the pogo stick first as a simple vertical line with a small spring coil near the base and a short handle bar near the top, then the slice standing on the small foot pegs, both hands gripping the handle, body angled mid-bounce.

Ink the stick and spring first since the slice needs to line up correctly with the foot pegs, then the slice itself leaning slightly forward, knees bent, with a couple of short motion lines beneath the spring to show the bounce.

A slice drawn perfectly upright on the stick looks static rather than bouncing. Lean the whole body a touch forward and bend the knees more than feels natural, exaggerated bend reads as active motion at this small scale.

Draw the spring as a tight zigzag rather than smooth curves, a sharper zigzag reads more clearly as a compressed spring in a quick doodle.

Palette: Tomato Red,Steel Grey,Crust Tan

Catch a slice mid-slip on a puddle of its own sauce. Draw the slice off balance, one leg kicked up high and arms flailing outward, body tipped at a sharp diagonal angle, with a small puddle shape drawn right beneath its sliding foot.

Ink the puddle first as a simple flattened oval, then the slice above it tipped at a strong diagonal, since the angle of the whole body is what carries the slip. Add a few short curved lines trailing from the sliding foot to show the skid.

A slice drawn upright with just one leg lifted looks like it is kicking, not slipping. Tip the entire torso off the vertical, shoulders dipped toward the puddle side, and that full-body tilt is what separates a slip from a kick.

Keep the puddle a flat even red, slightly glossy looking if you leave a small white gap unfilled near one edge to suggest a shine.

Palette: Tomato Red,Crust Tan

Catch a slice thrown high in the air, arms out and clearly delighted about it. Draw the slice at a joyful diagonal angle near the top of the page, both arms flung wide, legs kicked back, with a wide open mouth mid-squeal and a couple of small motion lines trailing below it where it left the ground.

Ink the diagonal body pose first, since the angle and the open arms are what make the toss read as joyful rather than accidental, then the face last with a big open smiling mouth and closed happy eyes.

A face left neutral during a toss like this reads as falling rather than celebrating. Push the mouth wide open and the eyebrows up high, full cartoon joy rather than a calm expression, and the squeal reads instantly.

Small sparkle marks scattered around the slice, a few short crossed lines, add a sense of excitement without any extra drawing effort.

Palette: Tomato Red,Basil Green,Crust Tan

Close the list with a slice facing its own worst nightmare: a fork and knife. Draw the slice holding both utensils out in front of its body at arm’s length, eyes wide and mouth open in shock, leaning its whole upper body backward away from them.

Ink the horrified face and the backward lean first, since the pose is what sells the fear before any detail on the cutlery matters. Then add the fork and knife, kept simple, a few prong lines for the fork and a plain blade shape for the knife, held loosely rather than gripped firmly.

Cutlery gripped tightly and confidently undercuts the horror entirely. Keep the slice’s hand grip loose and slightly trembling, with a couple of short shake lines near the wrists, and lean the body back further than feels natural for full comic effect.

For your next pizza doodle, flip this one around and have the slice calmly eating with its hands instead, a nice contrast piece to pair beside this reaction.

What to Do Next

Pick one slice, any slice, and start with the outline in fineliner before any color touches the page. A plain notebook page or a dot grid journal works fine, just leave enough white space around each doodle to let its little story breathe.

Frequently Asked Questions

What pens work best for a pizza doodle?

A black fineliner for the outline paired with a red and green marker for sauce and basil accents works best. Keep the fineliner fine tipped, around 0.3 to 0.5, for clean small faces and limbs.

How do I make pizza characters look expressive without much detail?

Push the eyebrows and mouth shape further than feels natural. Simple dot eyes with sharply angled brows and a wide open or tightly closed mouth read clearly at small sizes, more exaggeration always reads better than subtlety here.

Do I need to draw a full pizza every time?

No, a single slice is the easiest and most flexible base shape for this whole list. Most of these ideas use one triangle slice with arms and a face, only a few need a whole circular pizza.

What if I only have one marker color instead of red and green?

Use red alone for the sauce and leave cheese, crust highlights and basil as plain white outlines. The black fineliner outline still carries most of the character, color is an accent, not a requirement.

How small should each pizza doodle be?

Keep each one to a few inches, roughly the size of a large postage stamp to a playing card, since that size finishes fast and keeps the linework loose rather than overworked.
