32 Cupid Drawing Ideas of Sleepy Cupids, Missed Arrows and Love Letter Deliveries

8

A cupid drawing gives you the best of both worlds: a character small and round enough to finish in one sitting, and endless little moods to paint into his face and wings. These tiny archers get to nap, blush, fish for paper hearts and wobble on ice skates, which means every page below is its own small story rather than another stiff portrait.

Below you will find 32 cupids, each with its own setup and its own place to go wrong, so pick whichever one makes you smile first. Grab watercolor paper, a fine ink pen and a warm little palette of pink, red and sky blue, and work through them in any order you like.

Start with the easiest cupid on the list: a sleepy cupid curled up on a pink cloud, hugging his bow like a pillow. Pencil a soft round cloud shape low on the page, then a small oval body nestled into it, a round head tucked down, and two short wing shapes tucked behind his back.

Paint the cloud first in a pale blush wash, lifting a little colour out with a damp brush while it is still wet so it keeps a soft glow rather than a flat block. Let that dry before you paint the body in the same blush with a touch more pigment, then add the bow in a thin gold line once everything is dry.

This is the one to go wrong on if you rush the wet cloud and the body bleeds together into one pink blob. Keep a little white paper gap between cloud and cupid, even a sliver, so your ink lines later have something to sit on.

If you do not have a pink in your set, mix a little cherry red into white or leave the wash very pale and let the white paper do the work. Keep this first page loose: it sets the tone for the rest of the cupids to come.

Palette: Blush Pink,Cherry Red,Soft Gold

From a sleeping cupid to one of his misses: this idea skips the character altogether and paints the aftermath, a missed cupid arrow stuck straight into the side of a red mailbox. Draw the mailbox first as a simple rounded box shape on a post, then add the arrow jutting out at an angle with a small heart-shaped tip.

Paint the mailbox in a flat cherry red, leaving a thin white highlight strip down one side before it dries, then switch to a fine ink pen for the arrow shaft and the little heart tip once the paint is dry. A gold or white flag on the mailbox adds a nice small detail.

The mistake to watch for here is painting the arrow with a brush and losing its straight crisp line in a wobble of wet paint. Pencil the arrow’s angle first and keep it to ink only, no wash, so it reads as sharp and sudden against the soft red box.

If red feels too bold today, a dusty rose works just as well for the mailbox and keeps the whole page gentler. This one takes well under twenty minutes and makes a fun little visual joke on the page.

Palette: Cherry Red,Soft Gold,Payne’s Grey

Bring the mailbox idea full circle with the cupid actually on the job: a cupid mid-flight, a tiny leather satchel at his hip, delivering love letters. Pencil him leaning slightly forward with wings spread wide for motion, the satchel strap crossing his chest, and one small envelope held out in his hand.

Paint the wings first in a pale sky blue wash while they are still loose and wet, then move to the warmer tunic and satchel once that layer is dry so the colours stay separate. The satchel takes a dry brush of brown or deep red over a lighter base coat to give it a worn, folded look.

This pose can go stiff if both wings come out identical and flat. Angle one wing up and one slightly down, as if he just pushed off, and the whole figure reads as moving rather than posed.

No brown paint on hand? Mix a little red into green or blue until you get a muted tone close enough for a small satchel. For more scenes with props and tiny story moments like this one, the village scene drawing ideas are worth a look too.

Palette: Sky Blue,Cherry Red,Burnt Sienna

Give your cupid a ride for this one: perched on the back of a white dove, gliding across a pastel sky. Pencil the dove first as a simple rounded body with one wing lifted in flight, then seat the cupid just behind its neck, legs tucked, both arms steadying himself on the feathers.

Here is where eye level and light matter. Paint this scene as if you are looking slightly up at the pair against the sky, which means the dove’s belly and the underside of the cupid’s wings catch the most light, while the tops stay a touch cooler and shaded. Wash the sky first in pale blue and blush bands, then paint the dove in soft grey-white shadows once that is dry, saving pure white paper for its brightest feathers.

The spot this goes wrong is painting the dove too heavy and grey, which makes it look more pigeon than storybook dove. Keep most of the bird as untouched white paper and use shadow only in the folds of the wing and under the body.

If pastels run too pale for your taste, warm the sky with a touch more pink near the horizon. A whisper of gold along the dove’s wing tip finishes the feel nicely.

Palette: Sky Blue,Blush Pink,Payne’s Grey

Try this one with the dove facing left instead of right once you are comfortable with it, just to practice the wing shape from a new angle.

Put your cupid to work on this one: practicing archery at a heart-shaped target set up in a meadow. Pencil him in profile, bow drawn back, one leg forward for balance, with the heart target a short distance away on a simple wooden stand.

Paint the meadow first as a loose wash of green and yellow-green strokes along the bottom third of the page, letting the colours blend wet into wet for a soft grassy feel. Once dry, paint the cupid in his usual blush and white, then finish with the heart target in cherry red, leaving the little wooden stand as a plain ink line.

The hands-on trick here is in the bowstring. Rather than painting it, save that line for a single confident ink stroke once everything else is dry, since a wet brush line will blur and lose the tension you want in a drawn bow.

No green in your set? Mix blue and yellow fresh on the palette rather than reaching for a tube you do not have. This is a nice one to pair with the lamp post idea further down if you want two cupids on watch in the same spread.

Palette: Sap Green,Cherry Red,Blush Pink

Slow the pace down with a quieter moment: a cupid with a bandaged wing, resting curled up inside an oversized teacup. Pencil the teacup first as a simple rounded cup and saucer, then the cupid sitting inside it with knees drawn up and one wing wrapped in a small white bandage.

Paint the teacup in a pale blue or cream wash with a thin gold line around the rim, then let that dry fully before adding the cupid so the colours do not bleed into each other. Leave the bandage as plain white paper with just a few ink lines for the wrap, which reads clearly against the rest of the painted page.

This idea loses its charm fast if the face looks sad instead of just a little tired. Keep the eyes soft and slightly closed rather than drooping, and add the smallest curve of a smile so he reads as resting, not hurt.

If gold paint is not in your kit, a yellow ochre pencil line over dry paint gives the same warm rim glow. A single small heart floating near the cup finishes the quiet mood without crowding the page.

Palette: Sky Blue,Soft Gold,Blush Pink

Move from resting to working: a cupid hunched over a little workbench, sharpening heart-tipped arrows with a small file in hand. Pencil a simple rectangular bench first, then the cupid seated at it, one arrow held up to the light, a small pile of finished arrows lying beside him.

Paint the bench in a warm wood tone, dry brushing a second darker layer over the first once it is dry to suggest wood grain without drawing every plank. Add the cupid and his tunic next, then finish the arrow tips in cherry red, one or two with a touch of white left bare to catch the light.

The quick ten-minute version keeps just the cupid and one arrow floating with no bench at all, which still reads clearly as the idea. The forty-minute version adds the full bench, a small lantern hung above it, and a scatter of wood shavings in loose ink dots at his feet.

If you only have one brown in your set, that is plenty here: workbenches do not need variety, just one confident dry brush pass. Keep the heart tips small and neat so they read as careful work rather than a messy paint blob.

Palette: Burnt Sienna,Cherry Red,Payne’s Grey

Give this cupid a bit of mischief: hiding behind a tall lamp post, peeking out to wait for a couple to pass below. Pencil the lamp post as a simple thin vertical line with a round lamp top, then tuck the cupid just behind it, only his head, one wing tip and a hand visible around the edge.

Paint the lamp post in a flat grey or soft black, keeping the line thin and confident so it does not swallow the small cupid peeking around it. Once dry, paint the cupid himself in blush and white, with just enough of his body showing to make the hiding pose obvious.

Overlapping shapes like this are where lines tend to come out broken and smudgy, so pencil the overlap carefully before any paint touches the page and keep your ink outline continuous where the cupid’s edge meets the post. A soft wash of evening blue behind the whole scene adds mood without extra work.

If grey paint feels flat, warm it slightly with a touch of blue for a twilight lamp post instead of a daytime one. This is a fun one to pair with a second cupid further down the page for a little story of two watchers.

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Sky Blue,Blush Pink

Warm things back up with a cupid wrapped up after a rough flight: sipping cocoa from a tiny mug, snow still dusted on his wings from the storm he just flew through. Pencil him seated, knees pulled in, both hands wrapped around the mug, wings drooping slightly with fatigue.

Paint the wings first in a pale grey-blue wash, then flick a little white gouache or a dry toothbrush splatter over them while still slightly damp to suggest leftover snow. Once that layer is dry, paint the mug in cherry red and add a thin curl of steam in a pale grey ink line above it.

Where to watch for trouble: too much snow splatter buries the wing shape entirely. Flick it sparingly, a dozen small flecks at most, and keep the wing’s edge visible underneath.

No white gouache on hand? A white gel pen flicked lightly over dry paint gives nearly the same effect. This one pairs naturally with the cozy mood found in cozy drawing ideas if you want a whole page of warm, wrapped-up characters.

You Will Need

• white gouache or a toothbrush for snow splatter

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Sky Blue,Cherry Red

Swap the cocoa for a wobble: a cupid in ice skates, arms thrown out for balance, gliding unsteadily across a frozen pond. Pencil him leaning hard to one side, one leg kicked out behind, both wings spread for balance rather than flight.

Paint the pond first as a flat pale blue wash across the lower half of the page, then lift a few streaks out with a dry clean brush while it is wet to suggest ice cracks and shine. Let that dry completely before painting the cupid over it, so his skating line stays crisp against the smooth ice.

The quick version keeps just the cupid and the ice, finished in about ten minutes. The longer version adds a snowy bank behind him, a few bare trees in thin ink lines, and a scatter of small heart shapes skidding out from under his skates to show motion.

If pale blue feels too flat alone, add a thread of violet into the wet wash for extra depth in the ice. Keep his arms clearly off balance, since a calm, centred pose loses the whole joke of the wobble.

Palette: Sky Blue,Payne’s Grey,Blush Pink

Give this one a job that needs concentration: a cupid crouched over a large unfolded city map, squinting through a small magnifying glass to find an address. Pencil the map first as a large rectangle with a few loose wavy lines for streets, then the cupid kneeling beside it, one hand holding the glass up to his eye.

Paint the map in a very pale cream or tan wash so the ink details underneath stay easy to read once you add them, then paint the cupid in his usual palette once that layer is dry. Finish with a fine ink pen for the map’s street lines, a few tiny building shapes, and the glass’s round frame held in his hand.

This idea goes wrong fast if the magnifying glass ends up the same size as his whole head. Keep the glass modest, roughly the size of one hand, and let a slightly enlarged pencil line inside it suggest magnification rather than drawing a whole second face.

No tan or cream paint handy? A very pale, heavily watered-down yellow gives the same gentle map tone. This sits nicely beside the delivery and post office cupids elsewhere on this list if you want a little series about his daily rounds.

Palette: Burnt Sienna,Payne’s Grey,Blush Pink

Let the workload finally catch up with him: a cupid asleep face down at a small desk, surrounded by a towering, slightly uneven pile of envelopes. Pencil the desk and chair first as simple rectangles, then the envelope stack built from a cluster of overlapping rectangles leaning at slightly different angles, and finally the cupid slumped over the corner with his head on one arm.

Paint the envelopes first in soft creams and pale pinks, varying the wash slightly between each one so the pile does not flatten into a single block of colour. Once dry, add thin ink lines for each envelope’s edge and a small heart seal on two or three of them, then paint the sleeping cupid last so he sits clearly on top of the pile’s colour.

Comparing sizes keeps this one believable: the envelope pile should stand roughly as tall as the cupid’s seated height, which reads as “overwhelmed” rather than “slightly busy.” Check that measurement in pencil before any paint goes down.

If you are short on pink, swap in pale yellow envelopes instead, which looks just as sweet. A closed, peaceful face sells the exhaustion better than any prop around him.

Palette: Blush Pink,Soft Gold,Payne’s Grey

Bring in a second character for this one: two cupids mid pillow fight, each swinging a heart-shaped cushion at the other. Pencil both figures first in mirrored action poses, one lunging forward with the cushion raised, the other ducking back with his wings flared for balance, so the two shapes do not overlap too heavily.

Paint one cupid in a slightly warmer blush tone and the other in a cooler, paler version of the same colour, which keeps them easy to tell apart at a glance without needing different outfits. Paint the heart cushions last in cherry red, leaving a thin white seam line down the middle of each to suggest stitching.

Two figures crossing arms and wings is exactly where lines tend to break and smudge, so work out the overlap fully in pencil first and keep one figure’s edge unbroken where it passes in front of the other. A few loose white feather shapes flying out from the cushions adds energy without much extra work.

If mixing two blush tones feels tricky, paint both cupids identically and separate them instead with hair colour, using a warm gold for one and a soft brown for the other.

Palette: Blush Pink,Cherry Red,Soft Gold

Catch a funnier, quieter moment next: a cupid blushing hard after accidentally pricking his own finger on one of his arrows. Pencil him standing with one hand held up close to his face, finger extended, head tilted down slightly, wings drooping a touch from embarrassment rather than tiredness.

Paint his usual blush and white base first, then while that layer is still slightly damp, drop a stronger wash of pink or red directly onto his cheeks so it blooms outward with soft, uneven edges rather than a hard circle. That wet-into-wet bloom reads as a real blush far better than a flat painted dot ever will.

The spot this goes wrong is adding the blush once everything is bone dry, which leaves a stiff, cartoonish circle sitting on top of the face. If that happens, soften the edge with a clean damp brush while the added colour is still workable.

No extra pink on hand? A touch of the same cherry red used for his lips or tunic, heavily watered down, works just as well for the blush. Keep his little arrow nearby on the ground for context.

Palette: Blush Pink,Cherry Red,Payne’s Grey

Test his strength in this one: a cupid straining to carry a single rose that is far bigger than he is, arms wrapped around the stem, legs braced against the weight. Pencil the rose first, since its size sets the whole composition, making the open bloom roughly twice the cupid’s own height before you place his small figure struggling beneath it.

Paint the rose in layered washes of cherry red, working from the centre outward and leaving the outer petal edges a shade paler so the bloom reads as rounded rather than flat. Once dry, paint the cupid himself gripping the stem, leaning back hard against the pull of its weight.

That size comparison is the whole joke of this idea, so if the rose comes out only slightly larger than him, the strain reads as nothing much. Measure it out in pencil first against his height before committing any paint.

If a full rose feels ambitious, a single large petal alone, held over his head like a sail, tells the same story with far less painting. Either way, keep his face showing clear effort, not calm.

Palette: Cherry Red,Sap Green,Blush Pink

Give him a gentler task after the rose: watering a small garden bed where every bloom is shaped like a heart. Pencil a simple row of three or four heart flowers on short stems first, then the cupid standing beside them holding a small watering can tilted toward the bed.

Paint the flowers in varying shades of red and pink so the row reads as a garden rather than identical copies, then paint the leaves in a loose sap green wash around their stems. Finish with the cupid and watering can, adding a few fine ink lines of falling water droplets between the spout and the flowers below.

Varying this one next time is easy once the basic pose works: try a whole bed of heart flowers with no cupid at all for a quick ten-minute piece, or swap the watering can for a small bee visiting one bloom for a different story on the same setup.

If your reds all look too similar in the tube, add a touch of white gouache into one or two flowers to lighten them and break up the row visually. Keep the droplets few and light rather than a heavy shower.

Palette: Cherry Red,Blush Pink,Sap Green

Bundle him up for the cold next: a cupid in a knit hat and matching scarf, flying through steady snowfall with the scarf trailing behind him. Pencil him mid-flight, wings angled back, scarf streaming out in a long curved shape to suggest the push of the wind against him.

Paint the sky first in a cool grey-blue wash, then while it is still slightly damp, flick clean water droplets or small dots of masking fluid across it before adding paint, so the snowflakes come out as untouched white specks once the wash dries around them. Add the cupid and his knitted hat and scarf once the sky layer is fully dry, keeping the scarf in a punchy cherry red against all that cool blue.

If you skip the masking fluid, add the snowflakes afterward instead with a white gel pen flicked lightly over the dry sky, which gives nearly the same scattered effect with less fuss. Either way, keep the flakes varied in size rather than evenly spaced, since a perfect grid of dots reads as patterned rather than falling.

The scarf’s trailing curve is what sells the flight, so give it one long sweeping line rather than a short stiff flap.

You Will Need

• masking fluid or a white gel pen for snowflakes

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Sky Blue,Cherry Red

The winter sketchbook ideas linked below show more ways to build snowfall and cold skies if this one makes you want a whole wintry page.

Trade snowfall for string lights in this one: a cupid thoroughly tangled in a strand of small heart-shaped fairy lights, one leg caught, both arms trying to pull free. Pencil a loose looping line for the string first, then the cupid caught inside one of its loops, body twisted slightly to show the tangle.

Paint the cupid first in his usual palette, then once dry, add the string itself as a thin ink line looping over and under his limbs, with small heart shapes painted in warm gold or red at intervals along it. The overlaps, where the string crosses his arm or wing, are exactly where lines tend to smudge or break, so plan each crossing in pencil first and break the string’s ink line cleanly where his body sits in front of it.

Keep the number of heart lights modest, six to eight along the whole string, rather than a dense cluster, which keeps the tangle readable instead of busy. A single light glowing brighter than the rest, left as a touch of white gouache, adds a nice small focal point.

No gold paint on hand? Yellow ochre gives nearly the same warm glow for the lights.

Palette: Soft Gold,Cherry Red,Payne’s Grey

Return to the clouds for a calmer scene: a cupid sitting cross-legged on a soft cloud, knitting a long pink scarf with two small needles. Pencil the cloud first, then the cupid seated in its centre, both hands holding the needles close to his chest, a loose coil of yarn pooled beside him.

Paint the cloud in the same soft lifted-wash technique from the very first idea on this list, pale and glowing rather than flat. Once dry, paint the cupid and the scarf itself, letting the scarf trail off the edge of the cloud in a loose wavy shape that still has plenty of length left to knit.

The quick version stops here, finished well within ten minutes. The forty-minute version adds a small ball of yarn rolling off the cloud’s edge, a trail of thin pink thread following it down the page, and a few stray stitches dropped along the scarf to show he is still learning.

If pink yarn feels too close to his own usual palette, knit the scarf in soft gold instead for a little contrast against the cloud.

Palette: Blush Pink,Soft Gold,Payne’s Grey

Give him weather trouble again, this time rain instead of snow: a cupid sheltering under a small umbrella that is only barely big enough to cover him, wings held in tight against the rain. Pencil the umbrella first as a simple rounded dome on a thin handle, then the cupid crouched beneath it, knees bent, wings folded flat against his back.

Paint the sky in a cool grey wash first, then add fine diagonal ink lines for falling rain once that layer is dry, keeping them all running the same direction so the rain reads as wind-driven rather than random. Paint the umbrella in cherry red with a scalloped edge, then the cupid tucked small and dry beneath it.

Keeping his wings tucked tight rather than spread is the detail that sells the discomfort of the scene, since spread wings would look like he is enjoying the rain rather than hiding from it. A few visible puddle reflections painted as simple pale blue ovals at his feet finish the mood.

If a full grey sky feels heavy, wash just the top third of the page and leave the rest as plain white paper around the umbrella.

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Cherry Red,Sky Blue

Climb up high for this one: a cupid perched carefully on a snowy rooftop, leaning over the edge to peek into a lit window below. Pencil the rooftop as a simple sloped triangle covered in a thin snow line, then the cupid lying on his stomach along the ridge, head and shoulders hanging over the edge toward the window.

From this eye level, the glow from the window becomes the main light source rather than the sky, so paint that window in warm gold first and let its light wash very slightly onto the nearest part of the roof and the cupid’s face, while the rest of the rooftop and sky stay in cool blues and greys. That single warm patch against all the cool colour is what makes the scene feel like night.

Watch that the warm glow does not creep too far across the roof, or the whole night feeling disappears. A thin, clean edge between the warm and cool areas keeps the light believable.

If gold paint runs too orange for your taste, a pale warm yellow does the same job with a softer glow.

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Soft Gold,Sky Blue

Bring the mood indoors for a smaller, quieter page: a cupid standing at a foggy window, drawing a simple heart into the condensation with one fingertip. Pencil a plain window frame first, then the cupid standing close to the glass, one arm raised, finger extended toward a half-finished heart shape.

Paint the window pane in a pale grey-blue wash all over, then once it is fully dry, lift colour back out in the shape of the heart using a clean damp brush or a scrap of tissue, which leaves a soft pale heart glowing against the foggy grey rather than a hard painted shape. Paint the cupid last, standing against the lighter window.

Lifting colour like this works best on paper that can handle a little scrubbing, so test your lift on a scrap first if you are using a thinner sheet. If lifting feels fiddly, simply leave the heart as untouched white paper from the start by painting carefully around its pencil outline instead.

A single drip running down from the heart’s point adds a nice touch of realism to the condensation.

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Sky Blue,Blush Pink

Back to the teacup for a cozier use of it: a cupid soaking in a teacup bath filled with water and a scatter of rose petals. Pencil the teacup large enough to fit him comfortably, then the cupid settled inside with his arms resting along the rim, eyes closed, a few loose petals floating around him.

Paint the water inside the cup in a very pale blush wash first, then drop a few stronger dots of cherry red into it while still damp so the petals bloom softly into the water rather than sitting as hard painted shapes. Once dry, paint the cupid relaxed and settled in, then the teacup itself around him in a soft cream or pale blue.

Edges matter a lot here: the petals should stay soft and a little blurred where they meet the water, so avoid going back over them with a dry brush once that bloom has happened, which would harden the edge and lose the floating feel.

If you do not want to risk the bloom technique, paint a few simple petal shapes directly with a loaded brush instead and leave small white gaps of paper between them for separation.

Palette: Blush Pink,Cherry Red,Sky Blue

Fold the mail into transport for this one: a cupid riding a paper airplane that has clearly been folded from a love letter, visible creases and a faint line of handwriting still showing through the paper. Pencil the airplane first in a simple pointed dart shape, then the cupid sitting astride it near the back, arms out for balance as it swoops through the sky.

Paint the airplane in a very pale cream wash, then once dry, add thin pencil or pale grey ink lines to suggest both the fold creases and a few loose wavy lines standing in for handwriting on the paper’s surface. Paint the cupid last, leaning into the dive with his wings pressed flat against the wind.

Next time you revisit this idea, try banking the plane into a steep turn instead of a straight dive, or add a second smaller paper plane trailing behind for a little race. Either version uses the same basic shapes you already worked out here.

If plain cream paper feels too bare, a thread of pale blue sky wash behind the whole plane gives it somewhere to fly through.

Palette: Blush Pink,Payne’s Grey,Sky Blue

Give him a slower hobby next: a cupid sitting at the edge of a pond, fishing paper hearts out of the water with a small rod and line. Pencil the pond first as a simple curved shoreline, then the cupid seated on its edge, legs dangling toward the water, rod held in both hands with the line dipping down into the surface.

Paint the water in a soft blue-green wash, leaving a few ripple lines as untouched paper around where the line meets the surface. Once dry, paint a handful of small paper hearts floating on top of the water and one caught on the hook just breaking the surface, using a slightly different shade of pink for each so they read as separate little shapes rather than one cluster.

If the hearts all come out the same size and tone, the pond reads flat and busy rather than charming. Vary their size a little, three or four is plenty, and keep most of the water as calm open space around them.

No blue-green on hand? Straight sky blue with a touch of yellow mixed fresh gives a similar pond colour.

Palette: Sky Blue,Blush Pink,Sap Green

Lift him back into the sky for one of the dreamier ideas here: a cupid swinging from a pale crescent moon at dawn, legs kicked out, one hand gripping the moon’s upper tip. Pencil the moon first as a simple curved sliver shape, then the cupid hanging from its point, body swung slightly to one side as if mid-motion.

Paint the sky in a soft gradient wash, starting with pale gold near the horizon and shifting up into a gentle blue toward the top, blending the two while both are still wet so the dawn colours melt into each other without a hard line. Once dry, paint the moon itself in a very pale cream, leaving its edge crisp against the sky, then add the cupid last.

This gradient sky is the whole mood of the piece, so if the gold and blue dry with a harsh stripe between them, go back in while still slightly damp with a clean wet brush to soften that line before it sets.

If blending gradients feels tricky, paint the sky in two separate flat bands instead and let a thin white gap of paper stand in for the transition.

Palette: Soft Gold,Sky Blue,Payne’s Grey

Turn the matchmaking skill toward animals for this one: a cupid gently nudging two shy cats closer together, one hand resting lightly on each of their backs. Pencil the two cats first as simple rounded shapes facing each other at a small distance, ears slightly back, then the cupid crouched between them, encouraging them closer.

Paint each cat in a different coat colour, a soft grey tabby and a warm ginger work nicely together, keeping the brushwork loose so their fur reads as a few confident strokes rather than many small hairs. Paint the cupid last in his usual palette, small enough that both cats remain the visual focus of the piece.

If you want to try this scene again later, swap the cats for two shy dogs instead and keep the same basic composition of the cupid gently encouraging them together. The pose transfers easily to almost any pair of animals.

If grey and ginger both feel tricky to mix confidently, a plain black cat and a plain white cat work just as well and are easier to keep clean on the page. For more animal character ideas at this same friendly level, the dog pencil drawing ideas are worth a visit.

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Burnt Sienna,Blush Pink

Step back in time for this one: a baby cupid, slightly rounder and smaller than the others, taking his first flying lesson from a patient dove hovering just beside him. Pencil the dove first in a steady hovering pose, wings spread wide and level, then the baby cupid just off to one side, wings flapping at an uneven angle as he tries to match it.

Paint the dove in calm, confident white and soft grey shading, keeping its pose still and steady on the page to contrast with the cupid’s wobble. Paint the baby cupid in a slightly rounder shape than your usual cupid, with smaller wings and a rounder face, to read clearly as younger.

If both figures end up equally still, the lesson reads as two birds resting rather than one teaching the other. Tilt the cupid’s wings unevenly and angle his body slightly off balance to make the learning obvious at a glance.

No grey on hand for the dove’s shading? A very pale wash of blue in the shadow areas reads just as well as soft grey against white feathers.

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Sky Blue,Blush Pink

Return him to the daily grind for this one: a cupid standing behind a small post office counter, stamping a stack of envelopes with a wooden hand stamp. Pencil the counter first as a simple horizontal shape, then the cupid standing behind it, one arm raised mid-stamp, a short stack of envelopes waiting beside him.

Paint the counter in a warm wood tone, dry brushing a second pass over it once dry for a little grain, the same technique used for the workbench idea earlier on this list. Paint the envelopes in soft cream, then finish with a small red ink stamp mark on the one he is working on, kept crisp and clean against the softer washes around it.

If you want a variation next time, swap the counter for a small mail cart instead and have him pushing it rather than standing still, which keeps the job theme but changes the whole pose. The props stay simple either way.

If red ink feels too harsh against the cream envelopes, a soft blue stamp mark works just as well and keeps the palette a touch gentler.

Palette: Burnt Sienna,Cherry Red,Soft Gold

Bring back the oversized object joke from the rose idea, this time with fruit: a cupid wrapped in a full hug around a strawberry considerably bigger than his own body, standing in the middle of a small berry patch. Pencil the strawberry first, sizing it against his height the same way you measured the rose earlier, then the cupid with both arms barely reaching around its widest point.

Paint the strawberry in layered washes of cherry red, leaving small pale dots unpainted across its surface for the seeds before adding a thin ink outline around each one once the base colour is dry. Paint the green leafy cap on top and a few low leaves around the patch floor, then the cupid hugging the fruit last.

If the seed dots get painted over by accident, a white gel pen dotted on afterward rescues them just as well. Keep the patch simple, two or three extra leaves at most, so the giant strawberry and the hug stay the clear focus of the page.

This pairs nicely with the oversized rose earlier on this list if you enjoy drawing cupid dwarfed by his surroundings.

Palette: Cherry Red,Sap Green,Blush Pink

Slow right down for this near-final idea: a cupid sitting cross-legged on top of a small stack of books, absorbed in reading a book of love poems held open on his lap. Pencil the book stack first as a few overlapping rectangles of slightly different sizes, then the cupid seated comfortably on top, head tilted down toward the open book in his hands.

Paint each book in the stack a different soft colour so they read clearly as separate volumes rather than one solid block, then let that dry before painting the cupid over the top. Finish with a few thin ink lines suggesting text on the open pages, just enough squiggles to read as writing without spelling anything out.

If the stack leans or looks unsteady once painted, a few short ink lines along each book’s spine help ground them and make the pile feel solid rather than accidental. For more calm, bookish little scenes at this same gentle pace, the sketchbook challenge ideas offer plenty of related prompts.

Keep his expression soft and focused rather than smiling broadly, since quiet concentration suits a reading pose better than a big grin.

Palette: Blush Pink,Soft Gold,Sky Blue

Close out the list with a cupid turning the tables and becoming the artist himself, standing at a tiny easel painting a row of red hearts onto a small canvas. Pencil the easel first as a simple tripod stand with a small square canvas propped on it, then the cupid standing just beside it, one hand holding a small brush up to the surface.

Paint the canvas itself in plain white first, then add the painted hearts on it in cherry red with a slightly looser, more textured brushstroke than the rest of the piece, since it is meant to look like paint within the painting. Finish the cupid and easel around it in your usual blush and wood tones.

If the hearts on his canvas look too neat and finished, loosen your grip and let the brush skip slightly across the paper for a rougher stroke that reads as an unfinished work in progress rather than a flat print. A small dab of red on his cheek or hand adds a nice final touch of mess.

This is a satisfying one to end on, since it closes the whole list with a cupid making his own little cupid drawing.

Palette: Cherry Red,Burnt Sienna,Blush Pink

What to Do Next

Pick whichever cupid made you smile first, not necessarily the first one on the list, and start there on a small sheet of watercolor paper. Keep your palette limited to the blush, red and blue mix used throughout, sketch loosely in pencil, and save the ink pen for last once the paint has dried.

Start with simple round shapes for the head and body before adding wings, arms or props. Block in the pose lightly in pencil first, then paint in loose washes, saving fine details like faces and feathers for a dry ink pen at the end.

What colours work best for a cupid drawing in watercolor?

A small palette of blush pink, cherry red and soft sky blue with a touch of gold covers nearly every scene. Keeping the palette limited also keeps your cupids looking like a matching set across a whole page or sketchbook.

How do I keep the cupid’s wings from looking stiff or flat?

Vary the angle of each wing rather than painting them as identical mirrored shapes. Let one wing lift higher or sit looser than the other, and leave some white paper showing through for the lightest feather tips.

Can I draw cupid with coloured pencil instead of watercolor?

Yes, the same poses and proportions work fine in coloured pencil, just build colour in light layers instead of washes. Keep the ink details for last either way, since crisp lines read best over a finished colour layer.

How long does each cupid drawing idea usually take to finish?

Most of these ideas finish within twenty to forty minutes once the pose is sketched out. Simpler single-figure scenes go faster, while ones with props, a second character or a detailed background take closer to the longer end.
