Sheep drawing gets cozy fast once winter comes into it: a woolly back dusted with snow, a lamb tucked into straw, a whole flock moving across a pale hill. These subjects suit a small canvas and a few flat blocks of color, which means you can start and finish one in a single sitting without juggling a dozen tones.
Below are 34 sheep and lamb scenes built for acrylic, arranged from the simplest shapes up to the ones with a bit more going on. Pick whichever one catches your eye first, since none of them need special skills you have not already got.
Using these images: free for personal projects such as printing, coloring, cards, journals and gifts. Handmade items that include them may be sold up to 30 pieces per design. More than that is commercial use and is not permitted, and neither is selling or sharing the images themselves or passing them off as your own. Please ask before any other use.
Start with the easiest sheep shape in the whole list: one soft oval for the woolly body, a smaller rounded shape for the face, and four short stumpy legs. Block in the fleece as a single flat cream shape first, then come back with a slightly whiter mix for the snow sitting along its back and shoulders.
Keep the background almost empty, just a pale icy blue field meeting a lighter sky, so the sheep reads clearly against it. Paint the legs and face in a warm oatmeal before the fleece, so any overlap gets covered rather than leaving gaps.
If the sheep starts looking flat, measure the body against the head: the body should be roughly three times as long as the face is wide, which keeps the proportions reading as a sheep rather than a blob. A round sponge or scrunched paper dabbed in white works well for the piled snow texture if your brush feels too smooth for it.
Finish with one tip: let the snow edge overlap the fleece outline slightly, so it looks piled on rather than painted beside it.
You Will Need
- small sponge or crumpled paper for texture
Palette: Cream,Titanium White,Icy Blue,Oatmeal
This one leans on a strong perspective trick: paint the barn door edge as a hard straight vertical line, and let the lamb’s head and one shoulder poke out from behind it, with the rest of the body hidden. That hidden-body trick does most of the work in making the scene feel like a real peek rather than a full portrait.
Block in the cherry red door first as one flat rectangle, then add the small cream lamb shape overlapping its edge. Paint the snowy yard beyond the door in icy blue and white last, since it needs to stay lighter than the door to keep the red popping.
If the lamb ends up looking pasted on top rather than tucked behind the door, soften the edge where the body disappears behind the wood with a thin darker line, which reads as a shadow and sells the overlap. Swap the red door for a weathered oatmeal one if you want a softer, less bold look.
Keep the light coming from the open snowy side, so the lamb’s face catches a touch more white than the door shadow.
Palette: Cherry Red,Cream,Icy Blue,Payne’s Grey
A flock reads well even as a handful of simple shapes repeated with small changes, so there is no need to paint every sheep in full detail. Sketch five or six overlapping oval bodies clustered on a curved hill shape, varying the sizes slightly so the group feels natural rather than stamped.
Paint the hill first as one sage green and cream shape dusted with snow, then build the sheep from back to front, starting with the ones further up the slope so the nearer ones overlap them. Keep every sheep the same simple cream oval with a small darker face, since that repetition is what makes it read as a flock rather than individual portraits.
If the group starts feeling crowded or confusing, leave a little gap of hillside between two or three of the shapes rather than packing them edge to edge. A painted-on cotton swab dab of white works as a quick snow dusting across the whole hill if you are short on time.
Try this one today with just four sheep if six feels like too much to manage in one sitting.
Palette: Sage Green,Cream,Oatmeal,Titanium White
Move from the flock into something with a bit more charm: a single sheep wearing a chunky cherry red jumper in a frosty paddock. Build the body shape first in cream, then paint the jumper as a simple rectangle wrapped around the middle, leaving the legs, face and a small collar of fleece showing above and below it.
A few short diagonal lines in a darker red across the jumper read as knit texture without needing real stitch detail. Paint the frosty paddock fence behind as thin oatmeal posts, kept low on the canvas so the sheep stays the main shape filling the frame.
If the jumper looks stiff or flat, round its bottom edge slightly so it follows the curve of the belly rather than cutting straight across. Any bold color works as a jumper swap if cherry red feels too strong, though a muted color loses some of that cozy winter punch.
Paint the jumper while the body underneath is still slightly wet, which softens the edge and keeps it looking knitted rather than stuck on.
Palette: Cherry Red,Cream,Oatmeal,Icy Blue
Try a mustard yellow or forest green jumper on a later version, since the same simple shape works in almost any bold color against the frosty background.
This black-faced sheep gives you a chance to work with a strong light source: paint the sun low and to one side, so the dark face and legs catch a rim of warm light along one edge while the rest stays in soft shadow. That single highlight is what makes a dark face read as three-dimensional rather than flat and heavy.
Block in the wool body in cream first, then paint the face, ears and legs in a deep Payne’s grey or near-black, adding the light-struck edge last with a thin stroke of warm oatmeal. The hay rack is just a few crossed oatmeal lines holding loose golden hay, with a little snow caught along its top edge.
If the black face looks too harsh against the pale fleece, soften the join between fleece and face with a small blended transition rather than a hard line. Swap real hay color for straw yellow if you want a brighter accent against all that winter cream and white.
Keep the munching mouth simple, just a small dark line at the base of the face, since too much detail there pulls focus from the whole scene.
Palette: Cream,Payne’s Grey,Straw Yellow,Titanium White
Curl two lamb shapes together into one combined oval rather than painting two separate bodies, which keeps the composition tight and reads instantly as a pair resting. Build each lamb as a rounded cream shape with a tucked head, overlapping them slightly at the middle so they share one soft shadow.
Lay the straw down first as loose golden strokes fanning out under and around the lambs, painted with the side of a flat brush for a scratchy texture. Add the lambs on top once the straw is dry, keeping their edges soft where they meet the bedding.
If the two lambs start blending into one shapeless blob, give each a slightly different tone of cream or oatmeal so the eye can still separate them. A dry brush dragged lightly over the straw at the end adds a nice broken texture if your first pass looks too smooth and even.
Try sketching the pair small in pencil first, since getting the curl of two bodies right matters more here than any single detail.
You Will Need
- dry flat brush for straw texture
Palette: Cream,Oatmeal,Straw Yellow,Sage Green
Exaggerate the roundness on this one: paint the sheep as one big puffed circle of fleece sitting on a snowy hill, with the legs and face almost too small for the body, like a cloud that happens to have feet. That scale trick is the whole appeal, so resist the urge to make it realistic.
Start with a wide circle in titanium white and cream mixed together, keeping the edge soft and slightly uneven rather than a hard circle. Add the tiny oatmeal face and stick-like legs last, placed low so the body reads as sitting heavily on the hill.
If it starts looking more like a pillow than a sheep, check the face is small and the ears sit high enough on the head, since that is what keeps the cloud shape readable as an animal. For a quick ten-minute version, skip the hill detail entirely and paint the sheep floating on a plain pastel sky; the forty-minute version adds a gently rolling snowy hill beneath it with a soft shadow.
Keep the whole shape round rather than oval, that is the one thing that sells the cloud comparison.
Palette: Titanium White,Cream,Oatmeal,Icy Blue
Give this lamb some motion by angling the whole body diagonally mid-air, with the front legs tucked up and the back legs trailing, rather than painting a static standing pose. A diagonal line through the body is the single trick that makes a jump read as a jump rather than a stumble.
Paint the small snowdrift first as a rounded white mound, then add the lamb above and slightly behind it so it looks caught mid-leap over the top. Keep the lamb’s shadow short and tucked close under the drift, since a long shadow would pull it back down to the ground visually.
If the pose looks flat, compare the angle of the back to the ground line: it should tilt noticeably, at least a gentle slant, for the jump to register. Simplify the legs into soft curved lines rather than sharp angles if a more cartoon-like bounce suits your style better.
Paint the drift’s shadow side in a pale icy blue rather than grey, which keeps the whole scene feeling bright and wintery.
Palette: Cream,Titanium White,Icy Blue,Oatmeal
Dry stone walls are just a stack of irregular rectangles, so lay them in first with varied sizes of oatmeal and grey stones before the sheep goes anywhere near the canvas. Keep the top edge slightly uneven, since a perfectly straight wall looks far less convincing than one with a few stones sitting a little higher or lower than their neighbors.
Once the wall is dry, paint the sheep’s head and shoulders poking over the top, with its body hidden entirely behind the stone. Dust the wall top and a little of the surrounding ground with white for the snow, letting a touch of it settle into the gaps between stones.
If the wall looks too tidy and modern, break a few of the horizontal joins so the stones interlock unevenly rather than stacking like bricks. A palette knife works well for laying flat stone shapes quickly if a brush feels fiddly for all those small rectangles.
Keep the sheep’s face turned slightly toward the viewer, which gives the whole scene a curious, friendly feel.
You Will Need
- palette knife (optional for the stones)
Palette: Oatmeal,Payne’s Grey,Cream,Titanium White
This scene adds a human figure, so keep her simple: a long wool coat as one solid triangular shape, a small oval head, and a rope leading back to the lead sheep, with the rest of the small flock trailing behind in a loose line. Block in the coat in a deep sage green or oatmeal before adding any of the sheep.
Work from the back of the composition forward: the snowy lane and distant hills first, then the far sheep, then the girl and her lead sheep closest to the viewer, each layer slightly larger than the last. That front-to-back size change is what gives the lane its sense of distance.
If the figure looks stiff, round her shoulders slightly and tilt her head a touch downward toward the sheep, which reads as a gentle, caring posture rather than a stiff standing pose. Swap the coat color for cherry red if you want her to stand out more sharply against all that cream and white.
Keep her boots and the sheep’s legs dark and simple, just short strokes, so they ground everything on the snowy lane.
Palette: Sage Green,Cream,Icy Blue,Oatmeal
Pair the sheep with a basket of its own freshly shorn wool: paint the sheep first as a simple cream oval, then build the woven basket beside it from a rounded oatmeal shape with a few curved lines suggesting the weave. Pile loose wool and a couple of yarn skeins on top in soft cream and icy blue.
Work light to dark on the basket, laying the base color first and adding the darker weave lines once it has dried, so they stay crisp rather than dragging through wet paint. The yarn skeins can be two or three simple loops of color sitting loosely in the wool pile.
If the wool pile looks too solid and heavy, dab a dry brush lightly over its surface to break up the edge and suggest its softness. A cotton ball dipped lightly in white and dabbed on works well if you want extra texture without much brush control needed.
Add one yarn skein in cherry red for a pop of color against all that cream and oatmeal.
You Will Need
- dry brush or cotton ball for wool texture
Palette: Cream,Oatmeal,Cherry Red,Icy Blue
Sunrise gives this sheep a warm light source, which changes where the highlights sit compared to a flat daytime scene. Paint the sky first as a gradient from soft pink through pale icy blue, then let that warm glow touch the top edge of the sheep’s fleece while the rest stays in cooler cream shadow.
Build the fleece in its base cream tone, then add small dabs of white along the sun-facing side to suggest frost catching the light, keeping the shadow side free of any white at all. That contrast between a warm lit edge and a cool shaded body is what makes the frost read as sparkling rather than just dirty-looking paint.
If the frost dabs look scattered rather than convincing, cluster them more densely along the back and shoulders where snow actually settles, and thin them out toward the belly and legs. A fan brush tapped lightly across the fleece gives a nice broken frost texture if a round brush feels too smooth.
Paint the sunrise glow first and let it dry fully before adding any white dabs on top, so they stay crisp rather than muddying into pink.
You Will Need
- fan brush (optional for frost texture)
Palette: Cream,Soft Pink,Icy Blue,Titanium White
This close, tender moment works best cropped in tight: paint just the lamb’s head and shoulders, a mittened hand, and the bottle, filling most of the canvas with the two main shapes rather than a wide scene. Start with the lamb’s face in cream and oatmeal, keeping its mouth gently open toward the bottle’s teat.
Paint the mitten next as one solid simple shape, in cherry red or sage green, holding the bottle at a slight downward angle toward the lamb. The bottle itself can be a plain pale cylinder with a small darker cap, no need for any reflective highlights or fussy detail.
If the connection between lamb and bottle looks disconnected, make sure the teat touches or very nearly touches the lamb’s mouth, since even a small gap breaks the illusion of feeding. Simplify the hand into a rounded mitten shape with no visible fingers if a gloved hand feels easier to paint convincingly.
Keep the background plain and pale, so nothing competes with this small, gentle moment.
Palette: Cream,Cherry Red,Oatmeal,Icy Blue
Line up a row of sheep shapes following a winding track across the canvas, which uses eye level in a quiet way: paint the track from a slightly elevated viewpoint, so it curves away rather than running in a flat straight line, and the sheep further along it sit higher and smaller on the canvas.
Block the track first as a pale snowy ribbon bordered by sage green hedging, then add the sheep from furthest to nearest, overlapping each new one slightly over the last. Keeping every sheep facing the same direction, following the leader, is what makes the line read as a flock on the move rather than a scatter of individuals.
If the sense of distance falls flat, check that the furthest sheep are noticeably smaller and sit higher on the canvas than the nearest ones, since that size and placement shift is what perspective here depends on. A thin dry brush dragged along the track edge adds a nice rough snow texture if the track looks too clean.
Finish with one sheep near the front turned slightly to look back, which adds a nice sense of life to the line.
Palette: Cream,Sage Green,Titanium White,Oatmeal
Here the whole body disappears under snow, leaving just the face and a hint of ears visible, which is a fun exercise in restraint: paint far more snow than sheep. Lay down a wide white field first, then add just a small oval of cream and oatmeal poking up from its surface for the face.
Keep the face detail soft, two small dark eyes and a gentle nose line, since this subject lives or dies on the contrast between a tiny warm shape and a huge cool white field around it. Shade the snow slightly with pale icy blue in its hollows so it does not read as one flat sheet.
If the face looks too small to notice, nudge it slightly off center and give it a touch more oatmeal warmth against the surrounding white, which pulls the eye to it immediately. A painted cherry red ear tag is a nice small accent if you want one more spot of color breaking up all that white.
Resist adding any body outline beneath the snow, the mystery is the whole point.
Palette: Titanium White,Cream,Icy Blue,Oatmeal
Herdwick sheep have a distinct grizzled grey fleece and a pale face, so swap your usual cream for a muted Payne’s grey mixed with a touch of oatmeal for the body, keeping the face and legs noticeably lighter in contrast. Block the fell itself as a sweeping hillside of sage green and oatmeal dusted unevenly with snow, since fells rarely get a full even covering.
Paint the sheep small against that wide hillside, since Herdwick scenes usually read as a hardy animal in a big open landscape rather than a close portrait. Add its pale face last, once the grey body has dried, so the contrast stays crisp.
If the grey body looks too flat and solid, break it up with a few short strokes of a slightly different grey tone to suggest the coarse, grizzled texture of this particular fleece. A dry stiff brush dragged lightly over the body works well for that rough wool look if a soft brush is giving too smooth a finish.
Leave patches of bare sage green showing through the snow on the fell, since a fully white hillside loses the rugged feel this breed is known for.
You Will Need
- stiff dry brush for fleece texture
Palette: Payne’s Grey,Oatmeal,Sage Green,Titanium White
Jacob sheep carry both patchy dark spots and a dramatic set of curling horns, so plan the proportions before painting: the horns should roughly match the height of the head itself, curling out and slightly back on each side. Sketch the horn curls lightly first, since getting both sides to match is the trickiest part of this one.
Paint the body in cream first with uneven dark patches added once it dries, keeping the patches irregular rather than evenly spaced for a natural look. Add the horns in a warm oatmeal or pale grey, shading one side of each curl slightly darker to give them some roundness.
If the horns end up looking flat and ribbon-like, add a thin darker line along the inner curve of each one to suggest it curls back into space rather than sitting flat on the face. Simplify to just one curved horn stub on each side if the full curl feels like too much for one sitting.
Place the sheep against plain snow with no other distractions, letting the spots and horns be the whole point of the piece.
Palette: Cream,Payne’s Grey,Oatmeal,Titanium White
This small barnyard lamb wears a fitted little coat rather than a loose jumper, so shape it closer to the body: a simple rounded rectangle wrapping the middle, with straps or a collar detail at the neck painted in a slightly darker tone of the same color. Block the lamb’s body and legs first in cream before adding the coat on top.
Keep the barnyard setting minimal, a fence post or two and a patch of straw-dusted snow, so the little coat stays the clear focus of the piece. Paint the coat in sage green or cherry red, whichever feels warmer against your background choice.
If the coat looks like it is floating above the body rather than wrapped around it, add a thin shadow line where the coat’s bottom edge meets the leg, which grounds it visually. For a quicker version, skip the collar detail entirely and paint the coat as one flat shape; the longer version adds a small button or strap line down the front.
Finish with a tiny cherry red strap if the coat itself is a cooler color, for one small warm accent.
Palette: Cream,Sage Green,Cherry Red,Oatmeal
Melting snow means two surfaces to balance: patchy white on top and sage green grass breaking through beneath. Paint the ground first as an uneven mix of white patches and green showing between them, keeping the edges where they meet soft and irregular rather than a clean line.
Add the sheep next, head lowered toward the ground, its neck curved down in a gentle arc rather than painted straight, which reads immediately as a grazing pose. Keep the legs slightly bent at the pose’s lowest point, since straight stiff legs would fight against the lowered head.
If the grazing pose looks awkward, compare the angle of the neck to the body: it should drop at roughly the angle of your forearm resting on a table, not folded flat down to the ground. A small palette knife dragged through wet green and white paint together gives a nice patchy melt texture if a brush feels too neat for it.
Add one or two small green blades standing up through the snow right under the sheep’s nose, as the one detail that sells the whole scene.
You Will Need
- palette knife (optional for melt texture)
Palette: Sage Green,Titanium White,Cream,Oatmeal
Painting two different animals resting together means giving each a distinct enough shape that they do not blend into one mass: round and woolly for the sheep, leaner with a pointed snout and perked ears for the dog, sitting or lying close beside it. Block in the stone barn wall behind them first as a simple flat oatmeal and grey shape, since it anchors the whole scene.
Paint the sheep’s rounded cream body first, then the dog beside it in a contrasting black and white or sable tone, keeping their two silhouettes slightly overlapping at the shoulder to suggest closeness. A short dusting of snow along the barn wall’s base finishes the setting.
If the pair looks disconnected, turn the dog’s head very slightly toward the sheep rather than straight ahead, which implies a bond between them without needing any extra detail. Swap a border collie’s black and white for a simple solid brown dog shape if that pattern feels fiddly to paint.
Keep both animals’ legs tucked in rather than fully visible, since a resting pose reads calmer with less leg showing.
Palette: Cream,Payne’s Grey,Oatmeal,Titanium White
Keep this tender pair close and overlapping, the ewe’s head curved down to meet the small lamb’s, since that touching point is the whole emotional center of the piece. Paint the ewe’s larger body first in cream, then add the smaller, paler lamb shape tucked beneath her head and slightly in front.
Build the straw-lined shed setting simply: a few loose golden straw strokes on the ground and a plain oatmeal wall behind, nothing more detailed than that, so the two animals stay the clear focus. Paint the point where their faces meet last and slightly soft-edged, which reads as a gentle nuzzle rather than two separate heads placed near each other.
If the connection feels weak, check that the ewe’s head tilts down at a real angle, not just forward, and that the lamb’s head tilts up to meet it halfway. A small warm pink or oatmeal shadow where their faces touch adds a nice soft glow if the scene feels a little flat.
Keep the lamb noticeably smaller and paler than the ewe, since that size contrast reads as newborn immediately.
Palette: Cream,Oatmeal,Straw Yellow,Soft Pink
Trees give a chance to practice scale: paint the oak’s bare branches large and reaching across a good portion of the canvas, with the sheep standing small beneath it, since that size difference is what makes the tree feel like real shelter rather than decoration. Block the trunk and main branches first in a deep oatmeal brown, then add thinner twig lines branching off before any snow goes on.
Dust the branches with small dabs of white sitting along their tops, never underneath, since snow only ever lands on the upper side of a branch. Paint the sheep last, small and calm beneath the canopy, its fleece in the same cream as the rest of the series.
If the tree looks thin or weak, widen the trunk at its base and let two or three branches cross near the top rather than spreading in a perfectly even fan. A fine round brush is worth the extra care here, since thin branch lines matter more to this one than almost any other subject on this list.
Keep the hill behind the tree plain and pale, so the branch pattern stays the most interesting shape in the scene.
You Will Need
- fine round brush for branches
Palette: Oatmeal,Titanium White,Cream,Icy Blue
This quieter moment pairs a sheep’s curious lowered head with a single ball of yarn sitting on the ground in front of it, a nice callback to the wool basket idea earlier in this list if you want to paint them as a pair. Build the sheep first, head tilted and lowered toward the yarn rather than straight ahead, with its nose nearly touching the ball.
Paint the yarn ball as a simple round shape in cherry red or sage green, with two or three loose thread ends trailing out from it in thin curved lines. Keep the background bare and pale, a hint of straw or snow at most, so nothing distracts from this small, quiet connection.
If the sheep’s curiosity does not read clearly, lower the head angle further and add a small shadow directly under the yarn ball to ground it on the surface. Swap the yarn for a simple ball of any bright color if red or green do not suit your palette that day.
Keep the trailing thread lines loose and a little uneven, since a perfectly neat spiral looks less like real spun wool.
Palette: Cream,Cherry Red,Sage Green,Oatmeal
A wooden crate gives a nice hard-edged frame around a soft sleeping shape, so build the crate first: four simple flat wooden planks forming a low box, painted in oatmeal with a slightly darker line along each plank edge for separation. Fill the inside with loose golden straw before adding the lamb.
Curl the lamb into one compact rounded shape, head tucked down against its own body, fitting neatly inside the crate’s walls rather than spilling over them. That tucked, compact pose is what makes it read as peacefully asleep rather than just lying down.
If the crate looks like it is floating rather than sitting solidly, add a short shadow along its base where it meets the ground. For a ten-minute version, paint the crate as one flat box with no individual plank lines; the forty-minute version adds the plank separations and a bit of wood grain texture with a dry brush.
Keep the straw color warm and golden against the cooler oatmeal crate, for a gentle contrast that keeps the whole thing feeling cozy.
Palette: Oatmeal,Straw Yellow,Cream,Payne’s Grey
Flip the usual outdoor view here: paint the scene as if looking out from inside a warm farmhouse kitchen, with a sheep’s curious face pressed close to the glass from the snowy yard beyond. Build the window frame first as simple crossed oatmeal bars dividing the canvas into panes, then add a light frost texture around the edges of each pane before the sheep goes in.
Paint the sheep’s face peering through one pane, slightly smaller and softer than it would look up close, since a pane of glass naturally mutes detail a little. A warm glow from inside the kitchen, a soft yellow wash in the corner, adds a nice contrast against the cold blue world the sheep stands in.
If the frost looks too heavy and hides the sheep entirely, keep it to the outer edges of each pane and leave the center clear where the face shows through. A fine brush loaded with thinned white, flicked lightly at the glass edges, gives a quick convincing frost pattern.
Keep the sheep’s expression gentle and curious rather than alarmed, since that is what makes the moment feel charming rather than startling.
You Will Need
- fine brush for frost flicks
Palette: Icy Blue,Cream,Oatmeal,Soft Yellow
Center this busier scene on one strong shape: a simple wooden sled piled with golden hay, with several sheep shapes gathered loosely around it from different angles rather than all facing the same way. Build the sled first as a low flat rectangle with two curved runners beneath, then pile loose hay strokes on top before any sheep appear.
Add the sheep working outward from the sled, overlapping a couple of their bodies against its edge so the whole group feels drawn toward the hay rather than scattered randomly nearby. Keep three or four sheep at most, since more than that risks crowding this composition past what reads clearly at a glance.
If the group feels static, turn one sheep’s head away from the sled, as if distracted, which breaks the uniformity and adds a touch of life to the scene. A palette knife works well for quick loose hay texture piled on the sled if a brush feels too controlled for it.
Keep the snow around the sled’s runners slightly packed down and flatter than the surrounding field, since sled tracks and hoof prints would naturally disturb it there.
You Will Need
- palette knife for hay texture
Palette: Oatmeal,Straw Yellow,Cream,Titanium White
This close portrait asks for a careful bit of detail work right at the very center of the canvas: one single snowflake resting on the sheep’s nose, painted last and small, after everything else is finished and dry. Build the face first in cream and oatmeal, keeping the nose area slightly darker and smoother than the woolly rest of the head.
Paint the snowflake as a tiny cluster of thin white lines crossing at a central point, no bigger than a fingernail relative to the whole face, since making it too large would look more like a sticker than a falling flake. A few soft white dots scattered loosely around the face suggest other snow still falling.
If the snowflake disappears against the pale nose, add the thinnest sliver of pale grey or blue shadow just behind it to lift it visually off the surface. A fine liner brush or even the tip of a toothpick dipped in white works well for those delicate crossing lines.
Keep the eyes soft and slightly closed, which reads as a peaceful moment rather than a startled one.
You Will Need
- fine liner brush or toothpick for the snowflake
Palette: Cream,Oatmeal,Titanium White,Icy Blue
The Valais blacknose has an unusually thick, curly fleece and a dark face with dark leg patches, so build the body with small rounded bumps along its outline rather than a smooth edge, since that curly texture is the whole character of the breed. Block in the dark face and lower legs first, leaving the rest of the body bare for the fleece.
Paint the alpine slope behind as a steep angled hillside rather than a flat field, with a few distant pale peaks suggested in a lighter icy blue near the top of the canvas. That steep slope and distant peaks give the scene its mountain feel more than any detail on the sheep itself.
If the curly fleece looks too busy or lumpy, keep the bumps larger and fewer rather than many tiny ones, concentrated mostly along the back and sides. A small round brush dabbed repeatedly rather than dragged gives a nice curly texture if a flat brush is making the wool look too smooth.
Keep the dark face and legs strong and simple, since that bold contrast against the curly pale body is the breed’s most recognizable feature.
Palette: Cream,Payne’s Grey,Icy Blue,Titanium White
Heather gives you a chance to vary the series with a different ground texture: instead of plain snow, paint a field of low frosted purple-pink heather clumps dusted with white, with the sheep standing among them rather than on an open hillside. Lay the heather in first as small clustered dabs of muted pink and purple across the ground, before any white frost or the sheep itself.
Dab white lightly over the top of the heather clumps once they dry, leaving plenty of the color showing through underneath, since a fully white field would lose the heather entirely. Add the sheep standing calmly among the clumps, its legs partly hidden by the low growth around its feet.
If the heather reads as a flat mess of color, group the dabs into small rounded clusters with a little bare ground showing between them rather than covering the whole field evenly. Swap heather for a plain snowy field if the purple tone feels hard to match, since the sheep and pose both work just as well there.
Keep the sheep’s fleece a slightly warmer cream than usual, which sits nicely against all that cool purple-pink ground.
Palette: Dusty Pink,Purple Grey,Cream,Titanium White
Round hay bales make a natural pivot point for a chase: paint one large cylindrical bale in the center, straw-colored with a few horizontal binding lines, then add two lambs in motion around it, one slightly ahead and one trailing behind at an angle that implies circling movement. Build the bale first as a solid simple shape before either lamb goes in.
Give the front lamb legs stretched out mid-stride and the back lamb legs bunched up as if just pushing off, since that difference in leg position is what sells motion and chase rather than two sheep simply standing near a bale. Keep both lambs the same simple cream shape, varied only by pose, to keep the pair reading clearly as a matched set at play.
If the chase feels static, angle both lambs’ heads looking toward each other rather than straight ahead, which implies they are aware of and reacting to one another. A light shadow beneath each lamb, shaped like a quick oval rather than a long line, keeps them feeling grounded without slowing down the sense of speed.
Finish with small kicked-up puffs of snow near each lamb’s back feet, which sell the motion instantly.
Palette: Straw Yellow,Cream,Titanium White,Oatmeal
Give this sheep a small human touch with a knitted bobble hat perched between its ears: paint the hat as a simple rounded dome shape in a bright color, with a small round pompom sitting on top painted as a soft fuzzy circle rather than a hard ball. Build the sheep’s head and ears first, leaving a gap between them for the hat to sit.
Paint the hat’s ribbed brim as a few short vertical lines around its lower edge, added once the base color has dried so they stay crisp rather than dragging. Keep the pompom a lighter or contrasting color to the hat body, so it reads clearly as a separate little detail rather than blending into one shape.
If the hat looks like it is floating above the head, tuck its brim slightly behind the ears on each side so it reads as worn rather than placed on top. Dab the pompom with a stippling motion using a dry brush for a soft fuzzy texture if a smooth round dot looks too flat.
Choose cherry red for the hat if nothing else in the piece carries that accent color yet.
You Will Need
- dry brush for pompom texture
Palette: Cherry Red,Cream,Titanium White,Oatmeal
A small stone hut gives you a strong dark frame around a bright subject: paint the hut’s doorway as a simple rounded or square opening in a solid oatmeal and grey stone wall, with the inside left darker than the falling snow outside. Build the exterior stone wall first, then carve out the doorway shape and leave it unpainted until the wall around it is dry.
Paint the sheep standing just inside that dark opening, lit slightly brighter than the stone around it so it reads clearly as the sheltered subject rather than disappearing into shadow. Scatter a light scribble of falling snow across the sky and roofline outside, using small dashes rather than solid dots for a sense of movement.
If the hut looks flat, darken the inner edges of the doorway opening more than the outer wall, which gives it real depth and makes the shelter believable. A single small window shape beside the door is an easy addition if the plain wall feels bare.
Keep the falling snow lighter in tone near the hut’s dark stone and slightly less visible against the pale sky, so it reads naturally rather than as a flat pattern.
Palette: Oatmeal,Payne’s Grey,Cream,Titanium White
Move indoors for this especially cozy one: paint a small basket lined with a soft blanket sitting near a simple cast iron stove, with just the lamb’s head and a hint of its wrapped body peeking out from the folds. Build the stove first as a dark rounded shape in the background, with a small warm glow suggested at its front.
Paint the blanket next, wrapped loosely around the lamb’s body in a soft sage green or oatmeal plaid, using a few simple crossed lines for a plaid pattern rather than a detailed weave. Add the lamb’s sleepy face last, peeking out from the top of the fabric.
If the scene feels cold despite the stove, warm the whole color temperature slightly with a touch more yellow mixed into the cream and oatmeal tones nearby, since a stove’s glow would naturally warm everything close to it. Swap the plaid pattern for a plain solid blanket if the crossed lines feel fussy for a quick sitting.
Keep the stove’s glow small and soft rather than bright, so it reads as warm background light without overpowering the lamb.

Close the series with a family group that reuses every proportion trick from earlier ideas: one larger ewe shape and three noticeably smaller lamb shapes, varied slightly in size and position so they read as a real moving family rather than four identical copies. Measure each lamb against the ewe, roughly half her height at the shoulder, which keeps the family scale believable at a glance.
Block in the snowy meadow first as a wide pale field with a soft horizon line, then paint the ewe walking forward with a confident, level stride before adding the three lambs trailing and spreading slightly around her rather than lined up in a neat row. Overlap one lamb slightly behind the ewe’s legs for a natural sense of a family moving together.
If the group feels cluttered, spread the lambs at different distances behind and beside the ewe rather than clustering them all on one side. A soft shadow beneath all four, shaped loosely rather than sharply, grounds the whole group in the snow.
Finish this piece, and the whole series, with one small warm cherry red touch somewhere on the ewe, an ear tag or ribbon, to tie it back to every other idea on this list.

What to Do Next
Pick one sheep that matches how much time is on the clock today, a simple snowy field scene for a quick session or the farmhouse window for something slower, and start with a small pencil sketch of the main shapes before the paint goes on. A small canvas, your usual acrylics and this list are really all you need to finish something cozy before the day is out.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the easiest way to draw a sheep’s woolly texture in acrylic?
Dab the fleece with a sponge, scrunched paper or a dry stiff brush rather than smooth brush strokes. That broken, uneven dabbing reads instantly as wool, while flat smooth strokes look more like a solid blob.
What colors work best for a winter sheep painting?
Stick to a narrow palette of cream, oatmeal, sage green and icy blue, with one accent color like cherry red. Keeping the range narrow across a whole series makes every piece feel connected and the snow read as genuinely cold.
How do I stop a sheep drawing from looking like a cloud with legs?
Keep the legs, face and ears proportionally small but clearly defined against the large woolly body. A small darker face and short visible legs anchor the round fleece shape as an animal rather than an abstract puff.
Can these sheep ideas work on paper instead of canvas?
Yes, the same flat color block approach transfers well to heavy mixed media paper or a gouache board. Just seal thinner paper first or use a slightly drier brush, since acrylic can warp lightweight paper if applied too wet.
How small can a sheep painting be and still look finished?
A small canvas around eight by ten inches works well, since these ideas rely on a few bold flat shapes rather than fine detail. Keeping the subject filling most of that space matters more than the canvas size itself.
