Winter farmland is landscape illustration at its most satisfying: a few flat shapes, a crisp horizon, and a whole countryside appears under snow. Every scene below is built from simple blocks of gouache rather than fussy detail, which makes this style forgiving and quick to finish in one sitting.
You will find red barns, snowy hills, farm animals and tiny figures going about their winter business, each one a complete little world on the page. Work through them in order if you like, from the simplest shapes to the busier scenes, or just scroll until one grabs you.
Using these images: free for personal projects such as printing, coloring, cards, journals and gifts. Handmade items that include them may be sold up to 30 pieces per design. More than that is commercial use and is not permitted, and neither is selling or sharing the images themselves or passing them off as your own. Please ask before any other use.
Start with a red barn in a snowy field, since it only needs three or four flat shapes to read clearly. Block the barn as a simple rectangle with a triangle roof, paint the snow as a pale shape behind it, then add a thin dark fence line leading the eye toward the door.
Paint the sky first, then the snow, then the barn last so its red sits crisp against both. Mix a true barn red rather than straight from the tube, since tube red can look plastic against flat snow white.
The fence is where this goes wrong if you fuss over every post. Paint it as one continuous thin line with small vertical ticks rather than drawing each post separately, and it will read as a fence from across the room.
If you do not have a flat brush for the barn’s straight edges, use the edge of a stiff round brush loaded fairly dry and pull in one steady stroke.
Palette: Barn Red,Snow White,Sky Blue,Payne’s Grey
Rolling white hills come next, since the whole scene is just two or three curved shapes stacked against each other. Paint the furthest hill first in the palest blue-white, then a middle hill in plain snow white, then let a winding road cut through both in one curved line of warm grey.
Getting the curves to feel like real hills rather than lumps is about proportion: keep each hill shape wider than it is tall, roughly three times as wide, so the land reads as gentle rather than bumpy.
Add the tiny walker last, no bigger than your smallest fingernail, as a simple dark coat shape with two thin legs. Place the walker on the road rather than beside it, and the whole scene suddenly has scale and a story.
If your paper buckles under wet washes, tape all four edges down first with masking tape before you begin.

Move to a white farmhouse with a smoking chimney, a subject that leans on light rather than line to feel warm. Decide where the low winter sun sits, usually just above one shoulder of the house, and let that side of the roof and the orchard trees catch a touch more cream light than the other.
Paint the house as a simple white box with a grey roof, then the chimney smoke as one soft curling shape in pale grey, thinner at the top. Add a few bare orchard trees behind as dark forked shapes, smaller the further they sit from the house.
The smoke is the easy part to overdo. One loose curl reads as cosy; three tight curls read as a cartoon, so keep your brush loaded and pull just one stroke.
No fine liner for the orchard branches is fine, since the corner of a flat brush dragged lightly gives the same forked line.
Palette: Snow White,Soft Grey,Sage Green,Charcoal
If you want the house to glow more, warm its sunlit side with a touch of pale yellow ochre mixed into the white rather than leaving it pure white.
Round hay bales wearing snow caps give you a chance to practice circles that actually look round. Paint each bale as a flattened oval in warm tan, then drop a curved white cap along the top third while the tan is still slightly damp, so the two edges soften just enough.
Work from the back bale forward, overlapping each one slightly over the last, which instantly creates depth without any perspective lines. Keep three or four bales at most, scattered rather than lined up in a row.
If the caps look stuck on rather than resting, check that each one follows the curve of its bale rather than sitting as a flat stripe across the middle.
Short on tan gouache, mix it from yellow ochre and a touch of red and white rather than buying a new tube.
Palette: Yellow Ochre,Snow White,Sage Green,Pale Blue White
A patchwork of snowy fields divided by dark hedges turns your whole page into a pattern puzzle, which makes it a satisfying one to plan before you paint. Pencil in four or five field shapes of different sizes first, then decide which two or three get a faint blue-grey tint while the rest stay pure white, so the patchwork has rhythm rather than looking random.
Paint the fields first, leaving thin gaps between them, then fill those gaps with dark sage hedge lines once everything is dry. This order keeps the hedges crisp instead of bleeding into wet snow.
Hedges painted too thick turn into solid blocks and flatten the whole pattern. Keep each hedge line roughly as thin as a pencil width, with the odd thicker clump where two hedges meet.
If straight edges wobble without a ruler, lay washi or painter’s tape along each hedge line and paint over it, then peel back once dry.
Palette: Snow White,Pale Blue White,Dark Sage,Charcoal
A farm pond with ducks on the last patch of open water is your first chance in this list to paint reflection without overworking it. Paint the pond as one dark blue-grey oval ringed by white ice, leave a smaller open patch of plain water blue in the middle, then drop in two or three duck shapes as simple dark ovals with a thin orange line for the beak.
Work the ice ring before the open water, since a dry edge there keeps the ice crisp. Paint the open water last so it stays soft and slightly glossy looking against the matte ice.
Ducks painted too detailed lose the flat style fast. Keep each one a single dark shape with maybe one white cheek patch, nothing more.
No deep blue to hand, Payne’s grey mixed with a little sky blue gives the same cold pond colour.
Palette: Pond Blue,Snow White,Charcoal,Barn Red
Sheep huddled by a stone wall on a snowy hill rewards a little grouping trick before you pick up a brush. Sketch the sheep as a cluster of overlapping cloud shapes rather than separate animals in a row, since real sheep bunch together for warmth and that overlap is what makes the group read as one huddle.
Paint the stone wall first as a low band of warm grey with a few darker stone lines, then layer the sheep over the top once it is dry, each one a soft white cloud shape with tiny dark legs and face.
Too much space between sheep breaks the huddle feeling. Keep them touching or overlapping, four or five at most, tucked right against the wall’s shelter.
If pure white sheep vanish into white snow, give each one a thin grey shadow line along its lower edge to lift it off the ground.
Palette: Snow White,Warm Grey,Charcoal,Sky Blue
A snowy vineyard with bare vines in neat rows is really an exercise in perspective, since those rows need to shrink convincingly as they recede. Pick an eye level around a third up the page, then draw your vine rows as lines that all angle toward one point near that eye level, spacing them closer together the further back they sit.
Paint the snow between rows first, then add each vine row as a thin dark post shape with two or three short horizontal wire lines once the snow is dry.
Rows that stay evenly spaced from front to back flatten the whole scene. Keep the front gaps noticeably wider than the back ones, even if it feels exaggerated while you paint it.
A ruler helps keep the converging lines honest if you are new to this kind of perspective.
Palette: Snow White,Charcoal,Sage Green,Pale Blue White
A horse in a red blanket in a white paddock lets that one red shape do all the work against a very quiet background. Block the horse’s body as one rounded shape first, legs and neck simplified to smooth curves, then add the blanket as a flat red rectangle draped over its back before any darker shading.
Paint the paddock fence as two or three thin horizontal lines behind the horse, kept pale so they do not compete with the red blanket for attention.
Horse legs are the usual trouble spot. Keep them slightly thicker and shorter than feels natural, since this flat style forgives chunky proportions far more than spindly ones that wobble.
If red gouache looks too bright against the snow, mix a touch of Payne’s grey into it until it reads as a worn barn red instead.
Palette: Barn Red,Warm Brown,Snow White,Charcoal
Children sledding toward a farm gate adds motion to the list, and the quickest way there is a curved hill line that tips slightly downhill toward the gate. Paint the hill and gate first, then place two small sled shapes partway down the slope, angled the same direction as the hill’s tilt.
In ten minutes, two simple sled shapes with dot heads are enough to tell the story. Given forty minutes, add flying snow behind each sled as a few thin white flicks and give each child a coloured hat for contrast.
Figures that face straight out of the page rather than down the hill break the motion completely. Angle both bodies and sleds the same way the hill slopes.
No fine brush for the hats, the tip of a round brush loaded with thick paint makes a clean small dot.
Palette: Snow White,Barn Red,Sage Green,Charcoal
An old windmill on a snowy hill under a pale sky is mostly about getting the sails to feel still rather than spinning wrong. Paint the tower first as a simple tapered shape, wider at the base, then add four sail arms from the center point, keeping opposite arms in one straight line through the hub so they look mechanically correct.
Once the tower and sails are dry, paint the snowy hill rising up around the base, letting the hill’s curve hide the very bottom of the tower for a settled, grounded look.
Sails that look identical in width from hub to tip read as flat paddles rather than real sails. Taper each arm slightly narrower toward the tip.
If you enjoy this kind of structure, the windmill painting ideas collection has more mills in other settings to try next.
Palette: Snow White,Warm Grey,Pale Blue White,Charcoal
A wooden bridge over a frozen creek between fields gives you a strong horizontal shape to anchor the whole composition. Paint the two fields first in slightly different whites so the creek reads as a clear dividing line, then add the frozen creek itself as a pale grey-blue band running between them.
Paint the bridge last, a simple arched or flat plank shape with two or three upright post lines, sitting directly across the creek at its narrowest point.
A bridge that floats above the creek without touching the banks looks wrong immediately. Make sure both ends visibly rest on the field edges before you add any post details.
If flat planks feel tricky to keep straight, tape off the bridge’s top edge and paint up to it for a crisp line.
Palette: Pale Blue White,Warm Brown,Snow White,Charcoal
A row of poplars along a snowy canal is a good subject for practicing repeated shapes without them looking copied. Paint the canal as one long pale blue-grey band first, then add each poplar as a tall narrow oval on a thin trunk, varying the height slightly tree to tree so the row feels natural rather than stamped.
Work left to right, letting each tree slightly overlap the one before it in the distance, which does most of the perspective work for you without any vanishing lines.
Trees painted all the same height is the fastest way to flatten this scene. Keep the nearest tree noticeably taller than the furthest.
No long brush handle for the trunks, turn your brush sideways and drag the flat edge for a clean thin line.
Palette: Pale Blue White,Dark Sage,Snow White,Charcoal
A farm stand with crates of winter squash in the snow gives you a chance to work colour against colour rather than colour against white. Paint the stand’s roof and frame first in warm grey, then fill two or three crate shapes with rounded squash forms in orange, tan and deep green so they read as a cheerful cluster.
Each squash is just an oval with one darker curved line to suggest its ribbed side. Group them touching each other inside the crate rather than evenly spaced, which feels more like a real harvest pile.
If the stand looks too plain, a small painted sign shape above it or a string of dried corn hanging from one post adds character without much extra work.
Short on orange, mix it fresh from red and yellow rather than relying on a tube that may run thin.
Palette: Warm Orange,Yellow Ochre,Dark Sage,Warm Grey
A cleared farm lane with tall snowbanks on each side plays with scale in a satisfying way. Paint the snowbanks as two tall uneven shapes running the height of the page, leaving a narrow dark lane of bare ground winding between them toward a small point in the distance.
Keep the eye level low, near the bottom third of the page, so the snowbanks loom up convincingly on either side rather than reading as low mounds.
A lane painted perfectly straight loses the hand-cut feel of a real cleared path. Let its edges wobble slightly and narrow gradually as it recedes.
If you want a quieter version, drop the lane to ten minutes with no extra detail, then in a longer sitting add tire tread marks or a single set of footprints along it.
Palette: Snow White,Warm Brown,Pale Blue White,Charcoal
A hilltop cottage with laundry frozen stiff on the line adds a small human detail that most winter scenes skip. Paint the cottage and its hill first, then string a thin line between two posts and hang three or four stiff shirt and sheet shapes from it, each one angled slightly outward as if caught mid-freeze rather than hanging limp.
Stiff laundry reads very differently from soft laundry: keep every edge straight and angular, almost like folded paper, rather than curved or drooping.
If the shapes end up looking like flags instead of clothes, add one small dark clothespin mark at the top of each piece to anchor it to the line.
No clothesline post shapes to hand, a single straight branch stuck in the snow works just as well as a painted idea.
Palette: Snow White,Sky Blue,Charcoal,Barn Red
A dog chasing crows across a snowy stubble field is the liveliest scene so far, and getting the motion right starts with the dog’s body stretched low and long rather than upright. Paint the stubble field as a pale tan-white base with short dark flicks for cut stalks, then add the dog mid-stride with legs spread front and back.
Place three or four crows just ahead and above the dog, wings open, scattering outward rather than flying in one tidy group.
A dog painted standing square on four legs looks parked, not running. Stretch the front and back legs apart and lower the body slightly to suggest speed.
If crows feel fiddly in black, a flat dark grey silhouette reads just as well from a normal viewing distance.
Palette: Warm Tan,Charcoal,Snow White,Sky Blue
A glass greenhouse in a snowy kitchen garden is your chance to paint something glowing inside a cold scene. Paint the greenhouse frame first as a simple peaked structure in dark grey, then fill the glass panes with warm cream and soft green rather than plain white, so it looks lit from within against the snow outside.
Add a few bare garden rows in front, marked by short dark stakes, to ground the greenhouse in its setting.
Panes painted all one flat colour lose the glow completely. Vary each pane slightly, a touch warmer in the middle panes, cooler toward the edges, to suggest glass catching light unevenly.
No glazing bar lines drawn first, lay thin strips of tape across the frame shape before painting the panes and lift them once dry.
You Will Need
- low-tack tape for glazing bars
Palette: Soft Green,Warm Cream,Charcoal,Snow White
A frozen lake dotted with ice fishing shelters like tiny colored houses turns the whole page into a playful colour exercise. Paint the lake as one large pale blue-white expanse first, then dot it with four or five tiny shelter shapes in different flat colours, each no bigger than a small coin on the page.
Vary the shelter sizes slightly and space them unevenly across the ice rather than in a grid, which keeps the scene feeling like a real scattered settlement rather than a pattern.
Shelters painted with doors and windows in full detail will look busy at this scale. Keep each one a simple box shape with maybe one dark door line, nothing more.
If flat colours clash, pull them all from one family (a red, a mustard, a teal) rather than reaching for whatever is in the palette.
Palette: Pale Blue White,Barn Red,Mustard,Teal
Snowy terraced hills with a stone farmhouse in Tuscany borrows the same patchwork thinking from earlier, but stacked rather than flat. Paint three or four curved terrace bands rising up the page, each slightly narrower than the one below, then place the stone farmhouse near the top terrace with a single dark cypress beside it.
Keep the terrace bands gently curved rather than straight, since Tuscan hills roll more than they step, and let each band sit in a slightly different shade of white to separate them.
A farmhouse painted too large for its terrace breaks the sense of distance. Keep it small enough that the hill still reads as the main subject.
No deep green for the cypress, mix sage green with a touch of Payne’s grey for a convincing dark evergreen.
Palette: Snow White,Warm Grey,Dark Sage,Pale Blue White
A herd of brown cows gathered at a hay feeder in winter is a good test of grouping shapes convincingly, much like the sheep earlier but larger and bulkier. Block each cow as a rounded barrel body on four short legs, overlapping two or three around a simple rectangular feeder filled with pale gold hay.
Paint the furthest cows slightly smaller and paler than the nearest one, which does the depth work without any real perspective lines needed.
Cows spaced too evenly around the feeder look posed rather than gathered. Let two overlap heavily at one side and leave a gap at the other, the way a real herd settles.
If brown feels flat, add one cow in black and white for contrast within the herd.
Palette: Warm Brown,Yellow Ochre,Snow White,Charcoal
A girl collecting letters from a country mailbox on a snowy lane brings the list back to a small quiet moment. Paint the lane and snowbank first, then the mailbox as a simple rounded box on a post, its little flag raised, before adding the girl reaching up toward it in a warm coat.
Keep her pose simple: one arm raised, body angled slightly toward the box, feet planted rather than mid-stride, since this is a still moment, not a running one.
A figure painted facing straight forward instead of toward the mailbox breaks the story instantly. Angle her whole body toward the thing she is reaching for.
No bright red for the mailbox flag, a single confident dot of barn red is all it needs to read clearly.
Palette: Barn Red,Snow White,Sky Blue,Warm Grey
A snowy sunflower field with dry seed heads and finches is a nice change of texture after so much smooth snow. Paint a few tall dry sunflower stalks first, each head a simple drooping brown disc rather than a bright bloom, since winter heads have long since lost their petals.
Add a light dusting of snow at the base of each stalk, then perch one or two small finches on the seed heads themselves, each bird no more than a round body with a short tail flick.
Stalks painted perfectly upright and evenly spaced look planted rather than wild. Let a few lean slightly and cluster two together while others stand apart.
If you enjoy small birds like these, the cardinal drawing ideas collection has more winter bird moments worth trying.
Palette: Warm Brown,Yellow Ochre,Snow White,Charcoal
A hillside row of beehives tucked under snow is a quiet, almost architectural subject once you simplify the hives to stacked boxes. Paint three or four hive boxes in a gentle row along the hillside, each one a simple rectangle with a slightly overhanging roof line, then top each with a soft white snow cap the same way you handled the hay bales earlier.
Vary the hive colours slightly, a faded blue, a soft green, a pale grey, since real hive rows are rarely painted all one shade.
Hives lined up perfectly straight look mechanical against a rolling hill. Let the row follow the hill’s curve, slightly higher at one end than the other.
No fine brush for the roof overhangs, a single confident dab with a small flat brush gives a crisp little ledge.
Palette: Soft Blue,Sage Green,Snow White,Warm Grey
A farmer in a green coat carrying hay through a snowy yard puts a working figure at the center of the scene, so balance matters here more than anywhere else on the list. Paint the figure first, leaning slightly forward under the weight of a hay bundle carried against one hip, legs mid-stride.
Build the yard around the figure once the pose feels settled: a barn edge at one side, a fence at the other, footprints trailing behind in the snow.
A figure painted standing bolt upright while carrying a heavy load looks wrong immediately. Lean the torso and tilt the shoulders toward the load to sell the weight.
If green coats feel tricky to mix, sage green straight from the palette with a touch of charcoal added for shadow works well.
Palette: Sage Green,Yellow Ochre,Snow White,Charcoal
A long white valley with a river and farm lights at dusk shifts the whole palette toward evening, which makes it a good change of pace this far into the list. Paint the sky first in a soft dusk gradient from pale blue at the top to warm cream near the horizon, then the valley and river beneath it in cooler whites and blues.
Add two or three tiny farmhouse windows as small warm yellow dots once everything else is dry, since that warm light reads strongest against a cool, settled background.
Too many lit windows turns dusk into daylight by accident. Two or three small warm dots are plenty against a wide dark valley.
If gradients feel tricky in gouache, blend wet into wet on the paper rather than mixing the gradient on the palette first.
Palette: Dusk Blue,Warm Cream,Snow White,Warm Yellow
A winter coastline with snowy dunes and a beach path takes the countryside theme to the edge of the sea for a change of scenery. Paint the sea as a flat band of deep blue-grey first, then the snowy dunes rising in front of it as soft rounded shapes, letting a narrow sandy path cut through the middle toward the water.
Keep the horizon line low, in the bottom half of the page, so the sky takes up generous space above the dunes and sea.
Dunes painted too sharp-edged look like rocks rather than soft sand under snow. Soften their outline slightly where it meets the sky.
For more cold-weather coastal ideas, the winter landscape painting collection has several loose shoreline scenes worth a look.
Palette: Deep Blue Grey,Snow White,Warm Tan,Pale Blue White
A red chicken coop in the snow with hens peeking out brings a cheerful dose of barn red back into the list after the quieter coastal scene. Paint the coop as a simple box with a peaked roof and one small ramp, then cut a dark doorway into the front before adding two or three hen shapes peeking just at its edge.
Each hen is a rounded body with a small pointed beak and a simple comb flick on top, nothing more detailed than that at this scale.
Hens painted fully outside the coop lose the peeking feeling entirely. Let only heads and the front of their bodies show at the doorway edge, the rest tucked inside shadow.
No deep red to hand, barn red mixed with a touch of brown gives a slightly weathered coop colour that suits snow well.
Palette: Barn Red,Snow White,Warm Brown,Charcoal
A little yellow school bus at a snowy rural crossroads is a strong colour anchor subject, since that one bright yellow shape against all this white and sage carries the whole page. Paint the bus first as a simple rounded rectangle with a few dark window shapes along its side, then build the crossroads around it with two intersecting lanes cutting through the snow.
Keep the bus small within the wider scene rather than filling the frame, so the crossroads and surrounding fields still read as the setting.
Windows painted all identical in size look like a toy rather than a real bus. Vary them slightly and leave one or two paler to suggest reflected sky.
If yellow looks too neon against the snow, mix a touch of ochre into it to settle the tone.
Palette: School Bus Yellow,Charcoal,Snow White,Warm Brown
A snowy prairie with a lone grain silo under a big sky is a good lesson in restraint, since the whole feeling of this scene comes from how much empty page you leave around one small shape. Paint the sky first, taking up at least two thirds of the page, then a thin flat horizon line, then the silo as one tall narrow cylinder shape standing alone near the horizon.
Resist the urge to add more to fill the space. The emptiness around the silo is what makes the sky feel big.
A silo painted dead center loses some of its lonely feeling. Push it slightly off to one side, left or right, so the wide sky has room to breathe around it.
No airbrush-smooth sky, a slightly uneven wash still reads as a big open prairie sky at this scale.
Palette: Sky Blue,Snow White,Warm Grey,Charcoal
If you like working with this kind of wide, quiet sky, the winter wonderland painting list has more big open winter skies to explore.
A stone barn with a cat in the hayloft window is a nice small final detail scene once you trust the flat shape style. Paint the barn as a tall rectangle in warm stone grey with a peaked roof, then cut a small square hayloft window near the top before adding the cat as a simple sitting silhouette just inside it.
Keep the cat’s shape to two curves, the rounded back and the tail curled around the paws, with maybe two small pointed ears, nothing more detailed at this size.
A cat painted too large for the window breaks the scale of the whole barn. Keep it small enough that the window frame is still clearly visible around it.
If stone grey feels flat, add one or two slightly darker blocks scattered across the wall to suggest individual stones without drawing every one.
Palette: Stone Grey,Charcoal,Snow White,Warm Brown
A cottage garden under snow with a robin on a spade handle brings the list to a gentle close with its smallest subject yet. Paint the garden first, a simple fenced plot with a few bare plant stems poking through snow, then plant a spade upright in the ground before perching the robin right on top of its handle.
Keep the robin tiny and round, a dark body with one confident patch of barn red on the chest, since that single warm spot of colour is the whole point of the scene.
A robin painted too large overwhelms the spade and garden around it. Keep it no bigger than the spade’s handle grip, so it reads as perched rather than stuck on.
For more small garden bird moments like this one, the winter sketchbook ideas collection is worth a browse.

What to Do Next
Pick whichever scene caught your eye first, since that pull usually means you already have a feel for its colours. Tape down a small sheet of cold press paper, block in the sky and snow first, and let the rest build on top while the idea is still fresh.
Frequently Asked Questions
What paper works best for gouache landscape illustration?
Smooth cold press illustration paper or board works best, since it holds flat gouache shapes with crisp edges and does not soak up colour unevenly the way rough watercolor paper can.
How do you keep gouache edges crisp in a flat style like this?
Let each shape dry fully before painting the one beside it, and use tape along straight edges when freehand lines feel shaky, since wet-into-wet always softens the crisp look this style needs.
How do you mix a good barn red for landscape illustration?
Start with a true red and add a small amount of Payne’s grey or burnt sienna until it settles into a weathered, slightly muted tone, since tube red alone often looks too bright against snow.
How small should figures be in a winter landscape illustration?
Keep figures small enough to read as a detail rather than the main subject, usually no taller than a fingernail on a standard page, so the hills and sky still carry the scene.
Can these landscape illustration ideas work in other mediums?
Yes, the same flat shapes and simple composition ideas translate well to acrylic, colored pencil or even cut paper, though gouache gives the cleanest matte edges with the least effort.
